Peranbu (Malayalam) Reviews
"Resurrection" is a very hard film to watch, due to its duration and central theme, but the outcome is quite rewarding as it sheds light on a number of rarely depicted issues and a very well planned and executed relationship.

Peranbu features a transwoman (Anjali Ameer) in a pivotal role. It's heartening to see that the film doesn't make a mockery of her character.

Peranbu Review: Love And Redemption Come To Those Who Seek It
*Contains spoilers*
Director: Ram
Cast: Mammootty, Sadhana, Anjali Ameer, Anjali
Composer: Yuvan Shankar Raja
P eranbu makes it worthwhile. It asks you to sit down, consider it, watch it in full measure and at its own pace. It is not a demand, it is a request and when you do accede, it makes it all worthwhile.
A tale of love and redemption, Peranbu tells the story of a father and daughter, growing to like each other. Love each other. Accept each other. But there are no cutesy moments. There are no great big speeches or declarations of love, no major flourishes with accompanying music that tells us how to feel what we ought to feel. It is a romance also, of a man and woman falling in love, marrying each other after many failed attempts at finding love.
Peranbu is written by Ram, and co-directed by Ram, Anjana Krishnakumar, and Amudhavan Karupaiah. It stars Anjali Ameer, Sadhana, Mammootty, Anjali, and others, and features music by Yuvan Shankar Raja. The film was shot by Theni Easwar, and edited by Sreekar Prasad. Peranbu is produced by Pl Thenappan.
The film did the rounds of film festivals for over a year, winning all kinds of praise and acclaim. It finally released in theatres today.
Amuthavan (Mammootty) is a taxi driver and the primary caregiver for his disabled daughter – Pappa (Sadhana). He needs to come to terms with the fact that his daughter is growing up and is no longer the little girl he thinks she is. He also has to come to terms that his wife – who deserted the two of them and found love elsewhere – isn’t an evil being but just someone who wanted to be loved. And he has to figure out where he himself will find love and company.
We first see Amuthavan and Pappa approaching a remote house on the banks of a lake in Kodaikanal. Cut off from human contact, the house doesn’t even have electricity. Amuthavan believes this house will “cure” his daughter, make her like him. They also move here because the city and his own mother will not have him: reason is Pappa. And we also learn that his wife has left him for another man. And so, this house in Kodaikanal.
But the local land mafia wants this house, to turn it into a resort. They make an offer, they beat him up, but he stands his ground. Here in the house, Amuthavan slowly builds a relationship with Pappa. Very slowly. Partly aided by nature, a horse named Nailpolish, and a little bird trapped in the house which Amuthavan helps free.
He first realises his girl is no longer his baby, one night, when he spots blood on the mattress. She’s menstruating. He looks for a woman who can help, and does find one, but she leaves almost immediately. And so Amuthavan becomes mother and father to the girl. Just as he gets used to the idea, a woman called Vijayalakshmi (Anjali) enters his life. She tells him that she has no one and nowhere to go to, and will work for food and a place to stay. Pappa too takes an instant liking to Vijayalakshmi – because her nail-polish.
It also appears Vijayalakshmi likes Amuthavan, and sure enough, the two of them become lovers, and then marry each other. But there is an ulterior reason: we soon find that Vijayalakshmi and her husband Babu are agents of the land mafia and have engineered circumstances in such a way that Amuthavan has to hand over the house to the mafia or be charged with sexual assault of Vijayalakshmi.
And so the two of them move back to Chennai, and into a small lodge. Here, Pappa is locked indoors while Amuthavan tries to find a job, a house, a life. And behind doors, Pappa grows up further. Circumstances force Amuthavan to put Pappa in a shelter for disabled children, and he meets trans woman sex worker Meera (Anjali Ameer). Things get bleaker for him: he finds Pappa having thoughts of sex and love, and that he doesn’t know how to help her. He’s also driven to exhaustion, causing a road accident.
And so, he decides to take the easy way out and take both his own and Pappa’s life. They walk into the sea. But just in time, Meera spots them, rescues them.
Mammootty as a single father. All my heart. There’s never a moment where he is the superstar. Throughout the film, he is beaten up, manipulated, slapped, hit. He takes it all, never protesting. Never even trying to stop things happening to him. Able to forgive everyone and every event. He goes to the home of his ex wife, the one who left him for another man. Here he discovers that she’s converted, is now Stella, and has just given birth to a baby. The other man tells him that the newly born is “normal”. An almost accusation of Amuthavan, laying all the blame for Pappa’s disability on him. He just gets up and returns home, unable to blame her, or even question her.
Sadhana as Pappa. While I believe that a disabled actor ought to have been cast for the role, Sadhana perhaps is the next best fit. She doesn’t overplay her disability, doesn’t become a parody or a caricature. Unlike Anushka Sharma in Zero.
And Anjali Ameer. More of my heart than there is. A trans woman sex worker played by a trans woman. Perhaps other writers and directors would have written in a bunch of cliches and heavy handed scenes into this role. And perhaps other actors would have overplayed it. But here, there is no such thing. Meera is who she is and is the emotional strength of this film. It’s because of her that Amuthavan and Pappa find redemption, and it is as it should be.
There’s a particular scene that stood out for me. In Kodaikanal, in that remote house, Amuthavan and Pappa have just had a disagreement. All the while, the camera is at a distance, a dolly shot. The camera moves sideways – left and right – as the argument proceeds. Then Pappa gets up and goes into her room, shuts the door. Amuthavan is still sitting on the floor. I kept shouting in my head for the camera to punch in closer, so we can see what Amuthavan is feeling. But no, the camera – and all of us – stay resolutely at a distance. Allowing Amuthavan the room and privacy for him to grieve alone. Space to be.
Things get a bit tighter after they move into the city, and into the cramped lodge, and later house. And so things stay, till the moment of crisis: when Amuthavan has decided to end his own and Pappa’s life. And then it really opens up after the three of them finally find love and company in each other.

Disability rights activists and disabled persons themselves have been advocating for agency and capacity for themselves. In all matters, including sexuality. Many activists have cautioned against desexualising disabled persons. Against denying them their sexuality, treating them as infants. Peranbu is perhaps that advocacy translated as a mainstream film. Just as it is the film that trans activists have asked for. A transgender woman – a sex worker – written with agency, empathy, and depth.
Peranbu is worthwhile for all this, and for more.

Review by Michael James ★★★★
Another hard hitting masterpiece from director Ram, exploring the psyche of a helpless father who has just taken custody of his teenage daughter who has cerebral palsy, and how both of them come to terms with life and accept each other. The chapter wise narration helps the viewers indulgence in understanding the father- daughter bond. It speaks about several issues that are considered taboo in a bold manner. Using nature as a metaphor, the movie travels into an unexplored subject, brimming with compassion, human values & emotion. It makes us question the humanity in us and our prejudiced thoughts on disability. Mammooty delivers a mind blowing performance; Sadhana was equally brilliant. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s songs and bgm are pure magic. It’s a gut wrenching humanistic drama, but leaves you with happy tears when it’s completed.
Review by arsheeza ★★★★½
I just forgot how the taboo subject matter is so relevant. Ram's one and only his magnum opus and probably his most challenging ones as well. I can't tell how much I entirely adored this film so much just because of how well directed, well written, well shot and well composed it is. And of course, how can I forget Mammootty's performance? He made me cried with his broken expression and you know much I rooted for Amu and how much he loved Pappa affectionately and I'm so broken how much I connected to his character. It's a very small review that I wrote and it is a film that everyone should watch just because of the characters, Ram's philosophical direction and how well shot the film was.

Very important movie. A demanding yet a very rewarding watch. All the ideas and themes Ram portrayed on screen is incredible, and the music complemented it wonderfully. And of course Ikka, who obviously stole the show and he makes it looks so easy!
Peranbu once again showcases the wonderful actor and the amazing human being that is Mammootty.

Never revisited this film after my FDFS back then, seeing it after these many yrs, still so heart wrecking, still reduces me to a crying mess. So thankful that a film like this exists for multiple reasons.
□ The Fact that the film never demonizes the mother for leaving Paapa, for addressing the stigma around woman wanting to leave unhappy marriages and abusive households. Even Amudhavan has only good things to say about her.
□ The Fact that the film implies actual physical intimacy moments between Amudhavan n Raji n treating them as human beings instead of taking the easy route of portraying such parents…

when puberty overthrows innocence from a girl child in her utmost vulnerable position, mentally and physically how far can a father go? ram's peranbu is as a book with twelve chapters unfurling the wonders, difficulties and cravings of life in each page turn and at last make us realize life is about great love after all. amudhavan, the protagonist of the story is as gentle as a father can be, a role in which mammooty is very methodical, he forges ahead with no complaints rather attempts to change the milieus which in a way obstructs his path, nothing more than a father who wants his daughter to do things like any other girl of her age. sadhana in paapa's role is ultraclean and phenomenal.
Review by 3to4t3o2d
it is almost impossible to write an objective review of this film, for it invokes feelings that are so deeply personal. what is it about a father's frustration to understand his daughter that i relate so much to? i do not know, but it breaks my heart everytime amudavan tries make up for his absence of 10 years to his daughter, it brings me overflowing joy everytime paapa accepts his affection, it pains me to watch them get evicted from their own homes twice by their own families.
ram treats these characters with much sensitivity. there is no sugar coating nor is there any preachy simple solution, he simply lets us empathize with the characters at their most vulnerable state.…

Can't stop thinking about a film I've waited for over a year now, ever since its premiere at IFFR, will watch this a couple more times to digest what I've watched.
Peranbu is the type of movie filmmakers have been trying to make but fail to execute in a proper manner, it either comes out preachy, manipulate or judgemental. That's where Ram's strength lies, being able to make a film that might deal with sensitive taboo topics a lot of directors tend to shy away from, but he makes it from an angle where it comes as soft, gentle, caring and effortless. It takes a brave, talented filmmaker to do so.
Ram's approach to this is new and refreshing, I'll…
Review by joblessfahadh
the tragic limits of empathy, in a world that imprisons you for who you are, yet somehow, we find pockets of compassion in the places we least expect
meditative, quietly emotional, and its representation of disability, adolescent female sexuality, and trans-identity unparalleled in Indian cinema.
Ram's created something truly special here.

Painful, yet deeply moving.
Review by Asil ★★★★½
Beautiful and heart wrenching at the same time. Watching this movie made me realise how blessed I am, when compared to the lives of that of physically disabled persons. It also shows a parents struggle to upbring his child suffering from spastic cerebral palsy.
Mammootty and Sadhana gave an astonishing performance the rest of the casts were good too. Cinematography and Back ground scores were fabulous. This film is a brilliance by Ram.
This movie will make you ponder about your life once you've finished watching it. For me it was not an easy watch. I'm not spoiling it further check this out if you haven't already.

Peranbu movie review: Mammootty, Sadhana starrer is a devastatingly beautiful drama about father-daughter bonding
Peranbu, starring mammootty, sadhana and anjali in prominent roles and directed by ram, is an intense emotional drama about the relationship between a father and a daughter. rating: 4.5/5.
Peranbu Director: Ram Cast: Mammootty, Sadhana, Anjali and Anjali Ameer Rating: 4.5/5
Tamil cinema has had its share of father-daughter based films with Ajith’s Viswasam being the latest offering. However, it’s going to be extremely difficult to find a film as affecting as well disturbing in this space as Mammootty starrer Peranbu, and all credit goes to its director Ram for taking a road less travelled and giving us a film for years to remember and celebrate. In what can be described as a departure from his style of filmmaking, Peranbu is Ram’s quietest and most meditative and most rewarding film in years and it is going to be really tough to replace it.
Peranbu is narrated in chapters and each one helps us understand the father-daughter relationship better. If you walk in, hoping to be bowled over by a beautiful story of bonding between a father and his daughter, Peranbu isn’t the film you’re looking for. The film takes a deep dive into the psyche of a helpless father who has just taken custody of his teenage daughter who has cerebral palsy, and how both of them come to terms with life and accept each other. This is both a coming-of-age drama and a hard-hitting tale of survival in a world where everyone’s quick to judge.

The film takes its time to warm up to the audience. The narrative is quite slow and, at times, really does test one’s patience, but once sucked into the world of Amudhavan (Mammootty) and his daughter Paapa (Sadhana), the time invested is worthwhile. Among various others things it chooses to address through its narrative, the film focuses a lot on the father’s helplessness in understanding and dealing with his daughter’s sexuality. It also reminds us the importance of a mother in raising a child, especially if it is a girl. The film also talks a lot about upbringing and how it could be a life-changing experience for any parent. In case of Amudhavan, he rediscovers himself while trying to raise his daughter all alone.
The entire first half is set in the middle of nowhere, and amid nature. Not many Indian films or filmmakers have handled the topic of sexuality as sensitively as Ram, and he treats it with respect. The film unabashedly talks about a young girl’s sexuality and makes us realise there’s nothing wrong in discussing it as it is quite natural. It’s both shocking and extremely disturbing.
Mammootty, in his most nuanced and matured performances in recent times, plays Amudhavan and we see him play a character that most stars of his stature would refrain from accepting. Sadhana, who plays the daughter with cerebral palsy, is a revelation on screen and it’s extremely difficult to imagine anyone else in her shoes. She breathes life into a character that not many actresses can portray on screen as convincingly as her. Anjali makes an impact in a brief role and she proves once again why she’s one of the most underrated actors of our times.
Peranbu features a transwoman (Anjali Ameer) in a pivotal role. It’s heartening to see that the film doesn’t make a mockery of her character.

Mammootty's Peranbu review: A cinematic wonder that graces all aesthetics
It is a tale of father-daughter bonding told in an idyllic backdrop. In a gripping narrative, the story cascades into a wonderful course blending the twists of a thriller and artistry of filmmaking.
The story begins as Amudhavan, the protagonist, returns from the Gulf after long years of stay there. He has to look after his teenaged daughter with special needs after his wife deserts him.
The trouble starts when the father and the daughter are denounced by the kin and are forced find a dwelling that would not make a burden to others.
Nivin Pauly's Tamil film titled ‘Ezhu Kadal Ezhu Malai’
Actor Daniel Balaji loved playing the bad guy in films
Peranbu flows like a mellifluous poetry with an imagery that catches mists and hues in the air of a picturesque and forlorn land. The emotions are so thick that you cannot sit through the film avoiding the lump in the throat.
Aparna’s Peranbu bottle art is a rage among Mammootty fans
Mammootty, the actor immaculate, lends his soul to the character. He translates subtle nuances to graceful expressions with utmost perfection. Director Ram has brilliantly crafted the drama knitting some breathtaking moments of deep emotions. Ram's method of keeping the narrative segmented in chapters gives a mystic charm to the gripping tale.
Peranbu is the story of a girl afflicted by a medical condition, which is termed as spastic paralysis, and her loving father. The movie tells a lot about the physical and mental turmoil that a physically challenged girl in her teens undergoes. Yet, it never falls into a paraphrase of the miserable condition.
Sadhna Venkatesh, who plays the role of Paapa, Amudhavan daughter, excels in the movie. The stamp of artistic brilliance of an outstanding performer is evident in her performance.
Amudhavan depicts a hapless father's boundless affection for his daughter and his struggles to keep her happy.
There are a number of situations which brim with filial love. The travails of the two key characters have been portrayed with utmost intensity.
And when it's a child with special needs, the intensity of the emotion multiplies manifold. Sadhana is a UAE resident and had won the national award for best child artist for her debut film Thanga Meengal released in 2013.
Transsexual model Anjali Ameer, plays a prominent character in the film. Actress Anjali reprises the character of Viji in the film with power and aplomb.
As we move along with the tale, we get engrossed into the world of Amdudhavan and Paapa played by Mammootty and Sadhana respectively. Anjali Ameer, Samuthirakani, Vadivukkarasi also appear in prominent roles.
Though there is a shift in the backdrop in the middle, the narrative never loses its artistic vein and sails ahead by the strength of a coherent script. The beautiful frames of Theni Easwar blends well with Yuvan Shankar Raja's music.

A wonderful movie all should watch with an open mind. Kudos to Mammotty , Paapa and the director. The director has given a message that art should help society to upgrade it. The film is a Journey of a helpless father with all the reality surrounding him.

Peranbu movie review: Mammootty as a confused parent, Amudhavan, is his most natural self. Peranbu movie cast: Mammootty, Sadhana, Anjali, Anjali Ameer Peranbu movie director: Ram Peranbu movie rating: 4 stars A few minutes into Peranbu, you realise there is much more to the story of a single father Amudhavan (), whose whole world is his daughter Paapa (Sadhana).
At heart, Peranbu (Big love) is a highly charged story about a father (Amudhavan, played by Mammootty) and his cerebral palsy-afflicted daughter, Paapa (Sadhana) — but it turns out to be writer-director Ram's quietest film. And the quietness is in the filmmaking. In the opening shot, watching Amudhavan on a boat with Paapa, we wonder what's in store.

Peranbu effectively works because of the out of the box nature of Ram. The film is quick and open to themes that are particularly hard to be visualised on screen. Both ethically and professionally. The hardships that goes through a child, and the consequences of such are beautifully potrayed on screen by Sadhana.
Peranbu features a transwoman (Anjali Ameer) in a pivotal role. It's heartening to see that the film doesn't make a mockery of her character. Full Review | Original Score: 4.5/5 | Feb 2, 2019. M ...

Composer: Yuvan Shankar Raja. Peranbu makes it worthwhile. It asks you to sit down, consider it, watch it in full measure and at its own pace. It is not a demand, it is a request and when you do accede, it makes it all worthwhile. A tale of love and redemption, Peranbu tells the story of a father and daughter, growing to like each other.
