The Doctor of Philosophy Program (Ph.D.) is a fulltime program with four-years of study coursework and dissertation offered by Chulalongkorn University’s Business School or Chulalongkorn Business School (CBS).  Through conducive learning environment, students will experience, explore and develop insightful research ideas in the fields of Finance, Management, Marketing and IT in Business . Students will learn to acquire theoretical and methodological skills necessary for frontier advances, both scholarly and professionally.

In Finance, practice and theory are interdependent. Finance students will be equipped with in-depth theoretical background, and by means of rigorous research requirements, trained to make significant contributions to the existing body of knowledge. Key areas in Finance major include asset pricing, portfolio management, corporate finance, market microstructure, derivatives pricing, risk management, and securities market regulation.

In Management, the curriculum covers arrays of management theories and practices to tackle the 21st century management issues. Key research themes include innovation, decision making, organizational behavior, organizational design, human resource management, knowledge management, and business strategy.

For Marketing disciplines, selected marketing research topics are chosen for students to tackle so that they learn to cope with the ever-changing and fast-paced market environment.  These topics include the most up-to-date marketing theories and modelling, marketing innovation, consumer behavior analysis, digital marketing, marketing profitability and branding theories.

IT in business is tailored to create world-renowned scholars possessing a breath of innovation that optimally blend creativity and information technology. Doctoral dissertation will touch upon various issues on business with the depth of information technology diligence. The outcome will definitely yield hybrid insight that greatly contribute to the business realm.

State-of-the-Art Library System and Database

With more than 50,000 volumes and subscriptions to over 200 academic journals, business periodicals and trade magazines, our library is recognized as one of the largest business school libraries in the region.  The library is connected to Chula’s Information Network (CHULALINET), an online database search system which allows faculty members and students access to worldwide information databases, e.g. ABI/Inform (ProQuest), Blackwell Synergy (Wiley-Blackwell), Glabal Market Information Database (GMID), KResearch, etc.

Real-Time Financial Lab

In the Financial Lab, students can actually see for themselves how securities valuations, trading strategies, portfolio management techniques, and other important financial market concepts are interconnected in the financial marketplace.  The FAST system makes use of live, real-time financial information and news supplied by REUTERS.  The “market action” is real; only the gains or losses are simulated. In addition to the FAST system, REUTERS satellite data link, and REUTERS Financial Television (RFTV), the Financial Lab provides other sophisticated financial analysis tools like MatLab and SAS.  Faculty members and students can also access a wide variety of data sources, including Datastream, Thomson Financial Securities Data Company, and SETSMART.

PhD graduates have many lucrative career options which may include Management Consultant, Market Research Analyst, Faculty member, Economist, Entrepreneur, Director of Human Resource, Logistician, Marketer, etc.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is intended to prepare students for an academic career and research and or teaching. The Ph.D. program requires a 48-credit master’s degree or equivalent upon entry and publication upon graduation.

Ph.D. Degree Requirements

Total of 84 credits consisting of 12 credits of coursework which may include 3 credits of Special study and 72 credits of dissertation.

Complete a minimum of 12 credits coursework and maintain a cGPA of not less than 3.25 (usually within the first 3 terms). ​

Complete a doctoral dissertation (72 credits). Once you have completed all of the courses and dissertation credit requirements, you will no longer need to register. You will need to enroll, however, each term until you graduate.

Defend the dissertation at an oral examination.

Obtain a satisfactory evaluation of the dissertation from the External Examiner.

Have at least one scientific paper based on the dissertation published in or accepted by an international refereed journal where the student is the first author before the final examination.

Ph.D. Program Committee

The chairperson (supervisor) will work with the student on their research to form the program committee at the beginning of the third term of the study.

The committee should consist of a minimum of three members, including the supervisor, who will be its chairperson. One member should be from outside the academic program or school. In cases in which the committee is composed of two co-chairpersons, the committee should have at least two additional committee members.

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is intended to prepare students for an academic career and research and/or teaching. The Ph.D. program requires a 48-credit Master’s degree or equivalent upon entry and publication upon graduation.

Entry Requirements:

To be eligible for admission to the regular Ph.D. program, an applicant must:

Have strong academic records (both undergraduate and graduate) and usually hold a four-year bachelor’s degree, and a Master’s degree, preferably with a combination of course and thesis work, from an institution of good standing, acceptable to AIT. The minimum cumulative Grade Points Average (cGPA) requirement for admission to the doctoral program is 3.50 or equivalent at the Master’s degree level.

Submit a brief outline of the dissertation research proposal, including the required research facilities, if necessary.

English Requirements:

The minimum requirement for doctoral applicants is 5.5 (minimum entry requirement).

Applicants admitted with conditions should satisfy the English language requirement of 6.0 AIT-EET (or equivalent) within their 5th term.

As a requirement for graduation, students must attain a score of 6.0 on the AIT English Writing.

Exemption:  Applicants who are citizens of and have been educated in an English-speaking country (e.g., Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA) are exempted from score submission. Proof of citizenship and studies must be submitted.

The program focuses on developing the new knowledge with academic rigor through modern management practices and researches. The graduates are expected to create new knowledge or innovations to drive a creative economy that can create economic value and competitive advantages for the locality and the nation. The graduates will be able to conduct research that will benefit the development of new innovations to cope with the ever-changing technological, social, economic and cultural changes. Additionally, the graduates are expected to manage existing resources such as labor, raw materials, budgets, etc. for maximum efficiency, contributing to the sustainability of the organization in the long run. Most importantly, they must be ethical and socially responsible by promoting the development of research or knowledge that is beneficial to creating competitive advantages in society and the economy that can be transferred to the public as well as being able to publish their works in international academic journals.

Doctor of Philosophy Program in Management (International Program) is teaching and learning that focuses on enabling students to conduct research to create new and international quality knowledge by teaching and writing a thesis in English that can develop policy research that can guide society and determine policies that are important for social development. The economy and the country include developing students to be able to analyze, criticize and discuss various issues related to management and to be able to choose research methods or develop knowledge to correct, reduce weaknesses or enhance the competitive advantage of the relevant sectors and importantly, this course focuses on students taking advantage of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence in making decisions effectively, together with having faculty who are full-time instructors in the program who have empirical work in developing research that can be used for policy and commercial use, which has been accepted by various agencies. This gives instructors or thesis supervisors experience in conducting policy research that is used in decision-making and driving economic and social development and has the potential to support students in learning from actual situations.

  • Academics, professors, researchers, private businesses, and executives in government and private organizations, both in the general business sector, logistics business, hotel and service business, and financial business including consultants to government agencies and the private sector
  • PLO1 be able to apply knowledge with morality, ethics and social and environmental responsibility.
  • PLO2 be able to explain modern principles, concepts and theories of management.
  • PLO3 be able to analyze the problem, situation and environment as well as management approaches under different contexts.
  • PLO4 be able to apply information technology and digital systems to communicate and manage information with modern knowledge.
  • PLO5 be able to effectively synthesize and integrate management knowledge in development with other sciences and to collaborate with others and work as a team.
  • PLO6 be able to conduct research, management evaluation and gain new knowledge in management.
  • PLO7 be able to develop guidelines, plans and policies to lead society to positive change.

Admission Requirements

Must be a graduate of the master’s degree and meet the qualifications outlined in Walailak University’s Regulations for Graduate Studies for the International Curriculum of Semester System, 2020 as follows: 

Type 1.1 and Type 2.1

  • Be a graduate of the master’s degree or equivalent in a related field or other fields but have work experience of not less than two years or have at least one relevant research published in academic journals.
  • The results of the consideration of student qualifications are at the discretion of the program graduate committee and if the program graduate committee deems that the student needs to adjust basic knowledge, individual students may be required to take additional courses to provide knowledge for the development of the thesis and the program graduate committee has the discretion to waive foundation studies for students with sufficient research experience, subject to the consideration of the program graduate committee.

Applicants must meet the English proficiency test score requirements set by the committee of the College of Graduate Studies.

Welcome to PhD Thammasat University

PhD curriculum have been revised in 2017 and effective for the students who enroll for academic year 2018 onward. Currently, Thammasat Business School (TBS) has only one Ph.D. program, i.e. the Doctor of Philosophy Program in Business Administration (Ph.D.). Former Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) and Doctoral Program in Business (DPB) had been merged into the Ph.D. Program in 2013. This is a continuation of the former quality programs of the JDBA (The Joint Doctoral Program in Business Administration), established in 1992 and the DPM (Doctor of Philosophy Program in Marketing), established in 1998.

PhD specialization in accounting focuses on understanding the role of information and measurement systems in effective resource allocation within the firm and among firms. Areas of research include determinants of auditor performance and quality, financial disclosure strategies of firms, effects on IFRS adoption, financial reporting quality, corporate governance and fraud, etc.

PhD specialization in finance focuses on: 1) understanding the dynamics of financial markets arising from the interactions among investors, firms, and financial intermediaries; and 2) debating on issues that allows each market participant to make effective financial decisions and policy recommendations. Areas of research include asset pricing, portfolio choice, market microstructure, behavioral and empirical finance, risk management, real estate investments, etc.

PhD specialization in management focuses on understanding how firms create and sustain competitive advantage. Management is an interdisciplinary field that draws upon theories and frameworks from economics, sociology and psychology. Areas of research include institutional change, technological change and innovation, competitive strategy, corporate strategy, cooperative strategy, global strategy, behavioral strategy, corporate governance, top management team, business ethics, real options, etc.

PhD specialization in MIS focuses on the enhancement of knowledge that relates to the management of IT-based resources and services as well as IT-based business models. Areas of research include consumer usage of social media and e-commerce, big data analytics, eLearning technology, innovation management of ICT, mobile marketing, IT strategy, etc.

PhD specialization in OM focuses on improving the efficiency, quality, and innovation of enterprises to create unsurpassable competitive advantages through better understandings of operational strategies, product/service development and innovation, quantitative modeling, and rigorous data analytics. Areas of research include supply chain and inventory management, decision making under uncertainty, pricing and revenue optimization, quality management, process improvement, competitiveness, etc.

PhD specialization in marketing focuses on understanding the needs of customers, and ideas for developing and launching new products and services. Marketing is an interdisciplinary field that draws upon economic, behavioral, psychological and administrative theory. Areas of research include marketing communication, social media marketing, consumer preferences and behavior, new product introductions, electronic word of mouth, etc.
