 ------------------

Tip: Multiple-choice with single answer

►    This task requires you to choose the correct answer to each question from three possible answers .

►    There may be between one and ten questions.

►    The questions follow the order of the recording.

►    Within each question, you may hear reference to the three options in any order.

►    If you realise you have missed a question, don’t try to remember it, but move on, and make sure you do not miss the next question(s).

►    Multiple-choice questions vary considerably in terms of complexity.  In Section 1, they ask you to listen for relatively straightforward facts, but in Section 3 and Section 4, the questions will test your understanding of opinions, feelings, evidence, argument, and so on.

►    Do not immediately choose an option simply because you hear the same word or words on the recording. It is your understanding of the meaning of the whole question that is tested here.

Step-by-step guide

►     Step 1 - Think first

It is very important that you read the question carefully.

The stems of some questions (here  Questions 1  and  2)  are partial sentences, to be completed by the possible answers, while the stems of others are  complete questions (here  Questions 3, 4  and  5)

►     Step 2 - Watch out for possible dangers

Look at  Question 1.  The question consists of two parts: ' Before giving her presentation ' and ' Kate was worried about '. This is what you must listen for.

These are some dangers in choosing an answer:

  • You hear Kate say what worried her during or after the presentation, not   before  her presentation, and choose the wrong answer.
  • You hear Kate say what she was looking forward to, not what she was  worried about  before the presentation, and choose the wrong answer.
  • You hear another speaker, not   Kate,  say what he or she was worried about before his or her presentation, and choose the wrong answer.

►    Step 3 - Consider the possibilities

Look at the tapescript for  Question 1  and answer the questions below about options A, B and C .

I was ever so nervous beforehand. It's silly, because I do know my stuff quite well. I must know those  statistics inside out, but when you have to get each table of results to come up in the right order, it can make you nervous . It was my first time using the  computerised projector , and I was sure I was going to get the controls wrong , or something. And of course, that's not a good situation, if you know you've got to listen to questions carefully and be ready to answer quickly .

1    Did Kate expect to be asked questions ?............

2    Does she talk about questions being difficult ? ........

3    Is option A the correct answer?............

1    Does she talk about using projection equipment ?

2     Does she talk about problems in connection with  projection equipment?............

3    Is option B the correct answer?............

1     Does she talk about statistical results ?............

2     Does she say that explaining statistical results was s omething she was worried about?............

3    Is option C the correct answer?............

► Step 4 - Listen and do the task

Questions 6-10  Listen from here

Who will do the following tasks?

C both Martin and Kate

Write  the correct letter, A, B or C next to questions 6-10 .

6 A B C     compose questionnaire

7 A B C    select people to interview

8 A B C    conduct interviews

9 A B C    analyse statistics

10 A B C    prepare visuals for presentation

----------------------

Tips:  Classification

►    This task requires you to answer a series of questions with the same choice of answers in each case.

►    Although the possible answers are the same for each question, the questions do not depend on each other. You can get one question wrong, but the next one right.

►    Do not try to ' break the code ': it is not possible to predict how many answers will be the same, or to find a pattern of any kind.

►    In some cases, option C may be the combination of options A and B. In other cases, the possible answers may consist of three distinct possibilities - three different people, places, periods of time, and so on.

►    If you miss one question, leave it and go on to the next one.

►     Step 1 - Think first

What you hear on the recording may be different words from the questions, but with the same meaning.

For ' compose a questionnaire ' in  Question 6 ,  you might hear ' write a questionnaire ', ' create a questionnaire ', ' produce questions for a questionnaire ', ' put a questionnaire together ', and so on.

Look at  Questions 7-10.  Think of what you might hear on the tape and write your ideas:

7 ..........................................................................................

8 ..........................................................................................

9 ..........................................................................................

10 ..........................................................................................

►     Step 2 - Check what you will hear

Look at the tapescript for  Question 6.

Kate:  Yes. Well, we're going to need the questionnaire before we can do much else, aren't we? Do you want to handle that?

Martin:  I'd assumed we'd do it together ?

Kate:  You have more experience than me. Maybe you could think up the main questions, you know, a first version of the whole thing, and then I could read it through.

Martin:  And make suggestions? Well, OK .

Kate first suggests that Martin ' handles ' the questionnaire. If you choose option A (Martin) at this point, you are answering the question too soon . At this point, it has not been confirmed who will do the task of composing the questionnaire.

Next, Martin suggests that they do the task together . This indicates that both Martin and Kate (option C) is the answer. However, you cannot be sure, because Kate has not agreed to this yet.

Then Kate accepts Martin's suggestion and clarifies how they will both do the task. But you still cannot be sure, because Martin has not agreed to this.

Finally, Martin confirms his agreement ('Well, OK.'), and you can now safely choose option C as the correct answer.

►     Step 3 - Listen and do the task

IELTS Listening: Detailed Guide to Ace Your IELTS Listening 2022

Let’s face it. The IELTS Listening component is an exam where you will have to answer questions after listening to a native speaker, only once. Does it sound daunting? Yes, it does. But since you are here, we do have some good news! We know how you can ace the Listening test. So let’s get started.

IELTS- Overview

IELTS is one of the most popular English language proficiency tests. Test takers take this test for different purposes such as admission to higher studies, work purposes, or immigration. This is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP Australia, Cambridge English Assessment. There are two different types of IELTS in general, IELTS general training and IELTS academic.

As stated above, test takers take this test for two purposes: admission to higher studies and work purposes. Therefore IELTS has two types. IELTS Academics are taken by testicles for admission in higher studies. On the other hand, general training is taken by candidates for migration, or work-related purposes.

IELTS Listening Format

Before we move on to the tips and study guide part, let us first understand how IELTS listening works, what skills are judged, and how you are marked.

There are four sections with ten questions each. The questions are designed so that the answers appear in the order they are heard in the audio.

The first two sections deal with situations set in everyday social contexts.

#1. In Section 1, there is a conversation between two speakers (for example, a conversation about travel arrangements).

#2. In Section 2, there is a monologue (for example, a speech about local facilities).

The final two sections deal with situations set in educational and training contexts.

#3. In Section 3, there is a conversation between two main speakers (for example, two university students in discussion, perhaps guided by a tutor).

#4. In Section 4, there is a monologue on an academic subject.

The recordings are heard only once. They include a range of accents, including British, Australian, New Zealand, American and Canadian.

You have 30 minutes to answer 40 questions and 10 minutes to transfer them on your answer script.

Types of Questions in IELTS Listening

Preparing for any exam cannot begin unless you understand what type of questions you are expected to answer. The questions are mainly objective and you have to answer in a word or two or a sentence, at the most. Here is what exactly you will get:

# Question type 1:  You will get multiple choice tasks , where there is a question followed by three possible answers or the beginning of a sentence followed by three possible ways to complete the sentence. You will be required to choose the one correct answer – A, B, or C. Sometimes, candidates are given a long list of possible answers and told that they have to choose more than one. In this case, you should read the question carefully to check how many answers are required.

 # Question type 2: Here you will be required to match a numbered list of items from the listening text to a set of options on the question paper. The set of options may be criteria of some kind.

 # Question type 3: Test takers are required to complete labels on a plan (e.g. of a building), map (e.g. of part of a town), or diagram (e.g. of a piece of equipment). The answers are usually selected from a list on the question paper.

# Question type 4: You will be required to fill in the gaps in an outline of part or of all of the listening text. The outline will focus on the main ideas/facts in the text. It may be:

#1. a form: often used to record factual details such as names.

#2. a set of notes: used to summarise any type of information using the layout to show how different items relate to one another.

#3. a table: used as a way of summarising information which relates to clear categories – e.g. place/time/ price.

#4. a flow-chart: used to summarise a process that has clear stages, with the direction of the process shown by arrows.

You may have to select your answers from a list on the question paper or identify the missing words from the recording, keeping to the word limit stated in the instructions. Test takers do not have to change the words from the recording in any way.

# Question type 5: You will be required to read a set of sentences summarising key information from all the listening text or one part of it. They then fill a gap in each sentence using information from the listening text. A word limit is given, for example, ‘NO MORE THAN ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER.

# Question Type 6: you will be required to read a question and then write a short answer using information from the listening text.

Skills Tested

Each type of question discussed above tests a particular skill or a set of skills. For example:

# Multiple choice questions are used to test your detailed understanding of specific points or an overall understanding of the main points of the listening text.

# Matching assesses the skill of listening for detail and whether you can understand the information given in a conversation on an everyday topic, such as the different types of hotel or guest house accommodation. It also assesses the ability to follow a conversation between two people. It may also be used to assess your ability to recognize relationships and connections between facts in the listening text.

# Plan/map/diagram labelling assesses the ability to understand, for example, a description of a place, and to relate this to a visual representation. This may include being able to follow language expressing spatial relationships and directions (e.g. straight on/through the far door).

# Flow chart or summary completion focuses on the main points which a listener would naturally record in this type of situation.

# Sentence completion focuses on the ability to identify the key information in a listening text. Test takers have to understand functional relationships such as to cause and effect.

# Short answer type questions focus on the ability to listen for concrete facts, such as places, prices, or times, within the listening text.

You can see that IELTS Listening, although doesn’t have detailed rubrics for marking, is quite systematic in terms of assessing skills. Therefore while preparing you must ensure that you address each skill that is mentioned here. Remember IELTS checks your English language skills. It doesn’t check how much English you know.

IELTS Signposting Language

Signposting is words or phrases that act as a guide to the reader to introduce them to the recording. Here are some examples:

IELTS Listening Study Guide

Like every exam, IELTS Listening also requires dedicated practice. While practising you must focus on the skills that are tested. Following are some tips for you to imbibe in your daily listening practice:

# Practice listening to both one person speaking (a monologue) and more than one person speaking at the same time. For the first, you may get overwhelmed, while the second can be difficult because there may be different accents or styles of speaking and it is tricky to ‘tune in’ to what is being said. Listen to different podcasts to overcome the difficulties.

Be careful with your spelling. Lots of easy marks are thrown away because of poor spelling.

# Make sure you follow the instructions carefully especially when it comes to the word limit. If the question states ‘No more than three words’ you can’t write any more than this.

 # You have to get used to listening to things only once. Make sure to always practice under exam conditions and that means listening just once.

 # Remember, it is not just a listening test; it’s an understanding, reading, writing, vocabulary, and spelling test. Make sure you practice all of these skills under exam conditions.

IELTS Preparation Tips

The key to success in any examination or your life is practice. Someone wise has once said practice makes a man perfect. And yes, to excel in your IELTS listening test you need to provide as many audios as you can.

Try to hear different types of recordings such as radio, TV, news clips, and many more. Also make sure that you listen to these videos in different accents such as British, Australian, and American.

Practice Test

We have already said practice is important for your success. So taking practice sets and mock tests are all equally important. This helps you to understand the basic format of listening and get familiar with the exam environment.

Also, it will give you a clear insight into your current performance and will help you to improve your weak points and further strengthen your strong points.

Think in English

To learn any language you have to become a child once again. When a child is learning a language you may always find him or her murmuring some words. This is the fastest way to learn any language.

Therefore you have to practice English like that to improve your skills. This may sound funny but you can improve your English by thinking in English. The human mind is always filled with different thoughts and you can take advantage of this and think in English.

You need to build up your vocabulary otherwise you won’t be able to interpret what a word means in the recording. Remember if you are preparing for IELTS academic then the recordings will be pretty harder. And the use of words would be more difficult than general training.

Grammatical Mistake

You should also pay attention to your grammatical skills. While writing down the answer you should try to omit any kind of mistakes. Contest you can refer to different books, YouTube videos, or simply enroll yourself in the course provided by IELTS Ninja.

Handwriting

You should also try to improve your handwriting. Especially if you have bad handwriting then you should at least try to write one or two pages daily. Remember the examiner will score you on how you will perform on the exam data than the knowledge you have. If he or she is not able to interpret your answer then you will get a low band scale naturally.

The recording will have indifferent accents such as British, Australian, and American. Every accent has its characteristics and therefore you need to listen to every word carefully.

Exam Day IELTS Tips

A good practice doesn’t always assure great performance. You must follow some rules on the day of the exam too so that you are adequately relaxed, settled, and ready to conquer the exam. Here are certain things you should remember on the day of the exam:

Be Punctual

Arrive at the test center early and plan your journey. You need to be settled, organized, and ready for what’s coming.

Read and listen to the instructions very carefully. Many students throw away easy marks by misreading or not following simple instructions.

While listening to the audio, you should also make notes. This will help you to recall the main information of the recordings while answering the questions. You should also try to write the main keywords.

Answer Writing

# Write your answers on the test paper.

# Carefully transfer your answers to the answer sheet at the end.

# You can write in all capital letters if you wish.

# If you have problems hearing the recording, complain at the end.

# You will be penalized for writing more than the stated number of words, and therefore, should check this word limit carefully for each task.

Many of the candidates made the mistake of not revising the answers before submitting them. And this mistake can become fatal. After completing your answers, pay attention to minor details such as plurals, units, numbers, etc.

H3- Important Things to Remember: Common Confusion Regarding Listening Module

One of the most important features of the listening test is YOLO. By YOLO, it means you only listen once. This means the recording will only play once and you have to get that idea or the theme of the recording at once. Even if you do not get any answer you won’t be able to listen to the audio once again.

Multitasking

Remember you have to multitask. You may have to listen, read questions, and write answers at the same time. You should not do this in multiple-choice questions. You should practice multitasking beforehand only.

Answer Transfer

You will only get ten minutes to transfer your answer sheet. You should practice doing that beforehand.

Pen or Pencil

Open candidates are confused about whether they should write with a pencil or pen. But according to the British council, it is your call. You can write with either and it will not affect your scores anyhow.

Negative Marking

There is no negative marking in the listening module and therefore you can answer the whole question. Even if you don’t know the exact answer you can take a guess. And who knows your gas my be true.

Capital or Small Letter

Are you also confused about whether to write in capital or small letters? It is also your call. You can choose to write in either case. But it is preferred to write in all capital letters.

Remember you cannot write less or more than the prescribed word limit. Your score will be deducted if you write less or more than the word limit. You should practice writing in the word limit. Remember:

# Hyphenated words such as word-limit are counted as one word.

# 1990 is considered as one number.

#2,50,500 is counted as one word.

Spelling mistakes is one of the common mistakes while answering the questions. And one of the most common mistakes is deducting your marks. If you are aiming for a prestigious college you need a high band scale. And therefore you should pay attention to these small details. After writing answers you should carefully pay attention to the spelling. You can also try to memorize different words and build up your vocabulary to improve your spelling.

Concentrate

The whole test is a long process and you will need to have patience and maintain your concentration. You should practice concentration at home.

Time Management for IELTS Listening Module

The IELTS listening test has 40 questions from four different sections. To solve these questions you will only have 30 minutes plus 10 minutes to transfer answers. You will be given one extra minute to read the set of questions.

You need to utilise this time by reading the given question and trying to figure out the answers. After this try to answer all those questions that you know first. Then you can try to figure out the answers of those that you are facing difficulty with.

Preparing and Giving a Presentation

LECTURER : Hello, everyone. You’ve all been given an assignment for your sociology course, which will involve giving a presentation to the rest of the group. And so today I’m going to be giving you a few tips on how to prepare your presentations. This should help you with your current assignment, but a lot of the principles I’ll be putting across will be general principles, which will, of course, help you with all your future presentations.

Attempt full listening test…

So, first of all, the most important thing to consider is your audience, and in this instance, your audience are the other students in your group. There are three points to bear in mind. Firstly, you need to ask yourself what they need to know. Secondly, it’s useful to consider whether they’ll be Q31 supportive or not, and thirdly, will it be a small group, say, three or four, a moderate gathering of 20 or so people as for your current assignment or will there be hundreds of people?

Having settle that, what I’m about to tell you will apply equally to any audience. So, how do you structure your presentation? Right at the beginning, you should tell them something that forces them to Q32 pay attention . This could be something surprising or even shocking, but it needs to be relevant. After that, you need a list of items or topics showing them what you’ll be covering rather like an agenda. And then the main part of the presentation will follow. This main part will be the detailed information you’ll be presenting and could include facts, statistics, personal experiences, etc.

After this, you should summarize what you presented and close with what I call Q33 next steps . For this assignment, you could simply point the group to other sociology reference material. In other cases, you may want to suggest some actions that people can take.

Now. What about the design of the slides for your laptop? Well, the important thing here is to be Q34 consistent , you need to have the same type of font and use the same color and size for the same elements. For example, all headers need to look the same. All bullet points need to be presented in the same way. And don’t just stick to words. Bring the presentation to life by adding Q35 graphics . These could be in several forms, such as pictures, flow charts, diagrams, history grams, and so on.

And still, let’s move on now to presenting. You have your presentation prepared and you’re ready to start. Well, it’s important to give a good impression from the start, so take three deep breaths. Look at the audience, no matter how frightening they may be, and be enthusiastic and energetic.

As you go through the presentation. Remember to provide some variety in the way you speak. So, for example, you can talk fairly rapidly for information that may be familiar, but then slow down firm or unfamiliar sections and change your Q36 tone as you speak. Don’t keep it at the same level all the way through.

As I mentioned, look at your audience. Ah ah, a good tip is to pick people out and look at them for around five seconds. Not looking at the audience gives the impression that you’re either not interested in them or terrified of them. Looking too long at one particular person may make them feel rather uncomfortable.

There may be points in your presentation that you want your audience to really absorb, and in order to make important points stand out. You may consider adding Q37 silences , right after these. It will give people time to reflect on what you’ve just said. Also, you may be presenting complicated ideas or technical details, but trying to keep everything as simple as possible. Use simple words and as few as possible and be clear. If you say something like this appears to be, it implies uncertainty. So using Q38 weak verbs such as appears, seems, could be, etc needs to be avoided.

I’ll just finish off with a few thoughts on questions and interruptions from the audience. You may choose to invite questions from the audience as you go or ask them to wait until the end. Either way, questions should be encouraged as it provides you with some feedback on how interested the audiences and how well they understanding you. When a question is asked, you need to provide an answer that is as accurate as possible, so initially, my tip is to Q39 repeat it . This will ensure you have heard it correctly, and we’ll give you a few seconds to gather your thoughts.

Interruptions, on the other hand, can be unwelcome, and you may get them for a variety of reasons. It’s likely, however, that there’s something in your presentation that’s unclear or confusing.

So my advice is to reduce problems by reading through your presentation beforehand and Q40 predicting potential points, which could cause interruptions. You may then want to change that part of the presentation or at least be prepared if someone does interrupt you. Now, do you have any questions?

You will hear a conversation between a research student, Jeremy, and his supervisor. They are talking about the process of having a research project published in a journal. First, you have some time to look at questions 21 to 25. [20 seconds]

Listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 25.

SUPERVISOR : So, you’re nearly ready to submit your article to an academic journal, are you?

JEREMY : Yes, I think so. I just wanted to go over all the things I need to do before I submit it. And then I wanted to go over the submission process with you.

SUPERVISOR : Great. So, firstly, you need to write an abstract. Make sure it’s short and concise.

JEREMY : Of course, I forgot all about that. And what about key words?

SUPERVISOR : Yes, a lot of students overlook this part and just jot down whatever comes to mind. But take some time to make a list of key words that are accurate and relevant.

JEREMY : Okay. Another thing, could you have a look at my article before I submit it?

SUPERVISOR : Absolutely. Actually, at least two senior staff members should always read through a final draft, before submission. Do you mind if I give it to Professor Johnson to have a look at, as well?

JEREMY : Not at all. I’d be glad to have the feedback.

SUPERVISOR : Do you know which journal you want to submit to yet?

JEREMY : Not yet. I have a shortlist of about three that I’m interested in.

SUPERVISOR : Make that decision soon. Because you’ll need to adjust your article so that it matches the style guide of the journal you are submitting to.

JEREMY : I bet that can take a while.

SUPERVISOR : Yes, but after that you are just about ready to submit. One more thing, you’ll have to sign the copyright form – just confirming that it’s your own work – and then you’re good to go.

Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 26 to 30. [20 seconds]

Now listen and answer questions 26 to 30.

JEREMY : Now, the submission process. How does it work exactly?

SUPERVISOR : Well, the first thing is to just send it off. You’ve got to send in the manuscript before anything else can happen.

JEREMY : Sure. And then should I call to check if they have received it?

SUPERVISOR : No need for that, no, all you have to do is just log onto your e-mail regularly because you will get a submission confirmation once they have processed the manuscript.

JEREMY : And that will have comments on what they thought of it?

SUPERVISOR : No, no comments yet – that e-mail is just to let you know they have received it. The next stage is what is known as peer review. This is when experts in the field review your manuscript and decide whether to accept it.

JEREMY : Aagh, they’ll never accept me. I’m only a Master’s student!

SUPERVISOR : Don’t worry about that, Jeremy. It’s all done through a double-blind method. That means that whoever reads your manuscript has no idea whether you are a grad student or a Nobel Prize laureate. They’ll only be judging your work, not you.

JEREMY : Well that’s good to hear. And then what, once they’ve made their decision?

SUPERVISOR : Well, there are four possible outcomes. You might get an acceptance. But a first-off acceptance is very, very rare. Don’t pin your hopes on it. You could also get a rejection, but these don’t happen very often either. I don’t think this will be a problem.

JEREMY : What do you think I’ll get?

SUPERVISOR : If you’re very lucky, you’ll get a conditional acceptance. This means that they’ve accepted the article and it will be published, but you need to tweak a few things first: a sentence here, a heading there, nothing major.

JEREMY : That sounds good.

SUPERVISOR : But, to be honest, you will probably end up with a revise & resubmit. This means they are definitely interested, but you will need to rework the paper before it’s accepted. The necessary changes will be outlined by the reviewers.

JEREMY : Okay, so I just fix the things that need changing and present it again?

SUPERVISOR : Yes, but include a cover letter that discusses the changes you have made. The same goes for a conditional acceptance, actually. It helps the reviewers see that you’ve taken their criticism seriously.
