This study aimed to investigate the potential impact of negative social media content on athletes' cortisol levels and subsequent performance. The study focused on the change in cortisol levels and differences in free throw performance, based on previous research findings. We hypothesized that negative social media postings would increase the stress experienced by student-athletes, resulting in elevated cortisol levels and decreased performance. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between parenting style and the level of emotional intelligence in preschool-aged children. The sample consisted of eighty parent participants of preschool-aged children between the ages of 3 and 6 years old. Participants completed the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) in order to assess their views on behaviors that parents typically demonstrate towards their children. Based on each participant’s responses on the PSDQ they were determined to favor one of the following three parenting styles: authoritarian, authoritative, or permissive. This thesis introduces a novel Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) approach, focusing on nervous system arousal regulation during transitions between therapy groups. The core of the method involves a brief 5-minute exercise designed to modulate arousal levels, encompassing alertness and energy, aiming to establish a baseline homeostasis. Rooted in Polyvagal Theory and Developmental Neurobiology, the approach assumes the co-regulation of nervous systems within a group therapeutic setting. Two primary outcomes are self-assessed: 1) somatic experiences documented through narratives and 2) nervous system biodata measured using the Flowtime headband monitoring of brainwaves, heart rate, and other biomarkers. One area of criticism is the use of the test when the assumption for heterogeneity of variance between two samples is violated, such as when sample sizes and observed sample variances are unequal. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between personality traits, namely narcissism, entitlement, empathy, and a desire for fame, and a preference for public praise in a student population. Past research has shown that those who are higher in narcissism are also higher in entitlement and that these rates have been rising with future generations. Past research has also indicated a negative relationship between narcissistic tendencies and empathy, inferring that those higher in narcissism tend to score lower on empathy measures. Although negative intergroup contact occurs less frequently than positive contact, negative contact can more strongly influence outgroup attitudes and behaviors due to the effect of category salience in the generalization process. The present study ( N =306) tests whether being aware of an outgroup member’s complex social identity will serve as a buffer against the adverse impact of a negative intergroup contact experience on outgroup attitudes. In this paper, we present a novel method for detecting careless responses in a low-stakes practice exam using machine learning models. Rather than classifying test-taker responses as careless based on model fit statistics or knowledge of truth, we built a model to predict significant changes in test scores between a practice test and an official test based on attributes of practice test items. We extracted features from practice test items using hypotheses about how careless test takers respond to items and cross-validated model performance to optimize out-of-sample predictions and reduce heteroscedasticity when predicting the closest official test. This study examines counselor professional identity and burnout for clinical mental health counselors. The population of focus included licensed or license-eligible Clinical Mental Health Counselors, who were post-grad (N=53). Participants then completed the Professional Identity Scale in Counseling - Short Form and the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Human Services Survey. When examining the findings regarding the relationship between Counselor Professional Identity and Burnout for this study, the initial observation revealed the validity and applicability of the MBI-HSS to clinical mental health counselors. In recent years, the adjunct faculty phenomenon has grown steadily. This research focused on adjunct instructors teaching introductory statistics courses. The purpose of the study was to give a voice to adjunct instructors by allowing them to describe their experiences teaching statistics. We conducted a qualitative study with 15 adjunct instructors of introductory statistics through semi-structured interviews. The participants came from several fields: psychology, nursing, and business, among others. Thematic analysis was used to find themes of statistical anxiety, use of technology in the classroom, lack of curriculum flexibility, and connection to the host institution. Since 1952, the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing has provided criteria for developing and evaluating educational and psychological tests and testing practice. Yet, we argue that the foundations, operations, and applications in the Standards are no longer sufficient to meet the current U.S. testing demands for fairness for all test takers. Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate empirical distinctness and overlap between physical activity (PA) affect and emotions as well as potential unique relationships with PA beliefs and behaviors. Specifically, researchers wanted to explore the level of shared variance amongst discrete emotions and affect, which in effect tested the jingle-jangle fallacy that can be present in psychometric evaluation of related constructs.

It is imperative to collect validity evidence prior to interpreting and using test scores. During the process of collecting validity evidence, test developers should consider whether test scores are contaminated by sources of extraneous information. This is referred to as construct irrelevant variance, or the “degree to which test scores are affected by processes that are extraneous to the test’s intended purpose” (AERA et al., 2014, p. 12). One possible source of construct irrelevant variance is violating item-writing guidelines, such as to “avoid the use of none-of-the-above” in multiple-choice items (Rodriguez, 2016, p. 268).

As a discipline, Quantitative Psychology encompasses research on applied statistics and methodology, mathematical models of behavior, as well as philosophy of science. Quantitative research ranges from purely mathematical to sophisticated applied work in a particular substantive domain.

Some broad examples of questions encountered in Quantitative Psychology are:

How is the conceptualization of a psychological construct operationalized and measured?
Does a specific system of equations and distributions reproduce obtained data sufficiently well?
How well do the assumptions underlying a statistical model correspond to a class of research problems?
What novel hypotheses does a new analytic technique allow one to pose?

Our Ph.D. program is highly selective and interdisciplinary. It also provides a great degree of flexibility, allowing one to tailor the program of study to her or his goals and interests. In addition to the resources and expertise within the Psychology Department, University of Washington offers outstanding opportunities in statsitics, mathematics, computation and modeling. Student are encouraged to immerse themselves in the broader UW environment.

The Ph.D. major in School Psychology prepares psychologists for licensure as applied psychologists and focuses on the application of psychological knowledge and skills to school related problems. The American Psychological Association accredits the program. Completion of a bachelor’s degree within a major in psychology, education, or a related field or a master’s degree in an area related to school psychology is required for admission to the program.

Program Academic Regulations

The practicum and internship ( CPS 8680 and CPS 9680 ) are essential components of the doctoral training program in School Psychology. They provide trainees with the opportunity to take substantial responsibility for carrying out major professional functions in the context of appropriate supervisory support, professional role modeling, and awareness of administrative structures. The internship is distinguished from the applied practice experience by the increased responsibility and independence afforded the students and by the more intense nature of client contact. The practicum ( CPS 8680 ) is a one-term, full-time experience or a two-term, halftime experience. The doctoral internship ( CPS 9680 ) in school psychology requires either a full time experience for one calendar year or a halftime experience for two consecutive years.

Evaluation of a student’s performance is continuous and involves consideration of the student’s academic performance as well as the student’s performance in laboratory, practicum, and internship classes. A student may be dropped from a course and/or the program if the welfare of the student’s clientele or the functioning of a school or agency is, in the judgment of Department of Counseling and Psychological Services faculty, in jeopardy as a result of the student’s behavior. Students in this program are expected to follow the latest version of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) Principles for Professional Ethics, as well as the most recent version of the American Psychological Association (APA) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct.

Social Foundations of Education and Psychology of Learning Course (3 Hours)

Required (3 hours).

Students who enter the program with a graduate degree in school psychology from another institution and who have taken the equivalent of EPY 8220 may select another course from the Social Foundations of Education and Psychology of Learning list as identified by the Doctoral Advisory Committee.

Major Area (Required: 41 Hours; 38 Hours for B.A.-to-Ph.D. Students)

The major area of requirements complete the basic body of knowledge for applied professional practice as a school psychologist, building upon the foundation acquired at earlier graduate levels school psychology. A minimum of credits must be earned in the doctoral major, and these must include the courses listed below. Content for some of the required courses listed below may have been obtained in the master’s or Ed.S. program prior to admission to the doctoral program. In such cases, appropriate substitutions and/or credit for prior coursework, may be made with approval of the student’s doctoral advisory committee. Students who have prior coursework that is judged by the advisory committee to meet some of these course requirements must earn a minimum of 38 semester hours at Georgia State University to complete the major area of the doctoral program.

CPS 8680 - Internship in School Psychology is an Ed.S.-level internship that serves as the doctoral practicum requirement. The student’s doctoral advisory committee will determine whether the student has completed a comparable course in a prior graduate work and has sufficient skills and field experience to meet the criteria for this doctoral practicum. Based on input from the doctoral advisory committee, some students may be required to enroll in an additional practicum experience.
