Shatamanam Bhavati Review: A celebration of family values
How often have we heard our parents complain about how we don’t spend enough time with them? Or that we do not visit them and prioritise our work-life over spending time with the family. Normally we brush it aside as something every parent says. But Satish Vegesna’s Shatamanam Bhavati shows us the story from the parents’ viewpoint, delves deeper into the anguish and sadness that they feel at being neglected by their kids and sends a strong message to people who absorb themselves with social media and other forms of technology and forget the simple values in life. In a nutshell, Shatamanam Bhavati is a simple film about family values, told with a touch of melodrama and some neat narration.
The film is set in a village called Atreyapuram where Raghava Raju (Prakash Raj) is a well-respected person whose counsel villagers seek when they face any problem. He stays with his wife Janakamma (Jayasudha), while their children stay overseas. Before the Sankranthi festival, Janakamma wishes for the entire family to be together again and requests her husband to call their kids home. Knowing that his children might make excuses if he calls them, Raghava Raju devises a clever plan to bring them all under the same roof. However, there are quite a few problems within the family and the wounds grow deeper as they all come together. What happens when Janakamma finds out about her husband’s plan, and how their village-bred grandson Raju (Sharwanand) can bring the whole family together, makes for the rest of the film.
There is a sense of predictability to the story that keeps nagging at you. Like most family stories, there is a bit of trouble between family members, a young man who tries to keep them all together and a strict grandfather who is both feared and respected. The love story tends to drag on for longer than it should. The focus often deviates to the love story between Raju and Nithya (Anupama Parameswaran). The romance is predictably boring as we see the same old ‘baava-mardalu’ equation blossom into a love story.
Visually though, Shatamanam Bhavati is a treat to watch. The grand celebration of the Sankranthi festival is beautifully shown in the movie, and the screen is often filled with vibrant colours and laughter. There’s also a conscious attempt to send a message across to the digital generation on how to respect family values. “Farming is not a job, it’s a way of life,” Prakash Raj tells his little grandson, who questions how little money they make. There’s also an instance where Sharwanand shuts off cable connection and mobile networks in the whole village, so that the family spends time with each other, rather than with their gadgets.
The best moments in Shatamanam Bhavati are reserved for Prakash Raj, who revels as the family patriarch. His screen presence is so powerful that you wish to see more of him than the hero. And that’s not criticism of Sharwanand, who puts in an earnest performance. His characterization though is slightly questionable, as he’s portrayed as this golden-hearted man who can do no wrong. Anupama Parameswaran has a meaty role and does it well. Jayasudha, like Prakash Raj, plays her character with effortless ease, and does a wonderful job.
Shatamanam Bhavati delivers exactly what it promised. There are no fights or punch dialogues or extravagant songs in foreign locales. It’s just a simple story of family values and ethics. If you’re the kind who enjoys such films, then you will love Shatamanam Bhavati. If not, it can be a bit of a drag.

'Shatamanam Bhavati' Review: Dubsmash of Family Dramas
Movie: Shatamanam Bhavati Rating: 2.75/5 Banner: Sri Venkateswara Creations Cast: Sharwanand, Anupama Parameswaran, Prakash Raj, Jayasudha, Indraja, Sivaji Raja, Praveen, and others Music: Micky J Meyer Editing: Madhu Art: Ramana Vanka Cinematography: Sameer Reddy Producers: Raju Story, screenplay and Direction: Satish Vegesna Release date: Jan 14, 2017
Producer Dil Raju and Sri Venkateswara Creations are known for producing family entertainers. When Dil Raju announced 'Shatamanam Bhavathi', with Sharwanand and Anupama Parameshwaran in lead roles the movie created good vibration.
The songs, the trailers and the buzz have been good. So despite biggies competing this season at box office, the film hit the screens. Is this film content rich? Let's find out.
Story: Raghava Raju (Prakash Raj) leads happy life with his wife Janakamma (Jayasudha) in Atreyapuram. His grandson (cousin's grandson) Raju (Sharwanand) has special bonding with him and lives with him. But none of Raghava Raju's children who live abroad pay a visit to their home even for festivals.
To make them to comedown to their home on Sankranthi festival, he comes up with a plan that brings them all to their village. And family begins to enjoy the time together. On the other hand the grandson falls in love with his niece (Anupama). But the plan also creates problems between Raghava Raju and his wife. What happens next is the story.
Artistes’ Performances: Sharwanand has not much to do except playing good natured person, a role that reminds us old Venkatesh's roles.
Jayasudha and Prakash Raj as grandparents have given their best and of them Jayasudha once again steals the show. Anupama Parameshwaran is cute, she has not much to do. Indraja, Naresh and others are okay.
Technical Excellence: The movie is dipped with greenery. Sameer Reddy shot the beautiful village locations richly and it has classy production values. Mickey J Meyer’s songs are soothing and melodious. Dialogues by director are neat. Pace of the film is slow, the editing should have been crisp too.
Highlights: Cinematography Music Clean family drama
Drawback: Predictability Thin plot Dragging narration Outdated scenes Bad comedy
Analysis: "Shatamanam Bhavati" is mix of many super hit family entertainers. The writer and director Satish Vegesna has taken scenes from movies like "Seetharamayya Gari Manavaralu", "A Aa", "Govindudu Andarivadele", "Mr Perfect", "Brundavanam", "Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu", etc.
If you have seen all these movies, you would easily know what happens one after the other, as the basic story is very thin.
Prakash Raj is unable to see his wife Jayasudha's unhappy as their kids are not coming home. He makes a call to the kids with a plan. This is like in Seetharamayya Gari Manavaralu, ANR sending wedding card to his son who is living in USA to bring him to his village. All family members are enjoying their time together and sorting out their issues is straight from "Mr.Perfect". Sharwanand's role is mix of many movies.
The conflict between Prakash Raj and Jayasudha that arises from Prakash Raj's secret plan defies logic. Once their two sons and daughter and their kids come to their home, the movie completely goes like typical village dramas - with heroine asking questions like - What is Muggu? What is VP?
Then the drama goes on with predictable sequences but they also make a decent fun till the interval. Thanks to colorful visuals, setting and performances of the actors, till interval it makes a decent watch. Post interval, the movie is filled with even more outdated and predictable sequences.
While in the past, family dramas inspired by Suraj Bharjatya's "Maine Pyaar Kiya" and "Hum Aapke Hai Kaun" used to include 'Antyakshari' sequences to run the drama. Here, they have used a lengthy dubsmash sequence as per today's trend. So, we will see various actors performing from scenes of Pawan Kalyan, Mahesh Babu, Prabhas, NTR's hit movies.
Regarding the romantic track between Sharwanand and Anupama, it is exact copy of recent hit "A...Aa". But the chemistry between Sharwanand and Anupama is good.
What works in the movie are the colorful themes. Entire movie is set in lush green village in Godavari district, the surroundings, the cool visuals; the simplicity of the life makes the film a warm watch. Added to this, the music is also soothing. Despite this predictability, the movie makes a decent watch for this sole reason.
All in all, "Shatamanam Bhavati" is as typical family drama with predictable scenes and routine narration.
Bottom-line: Village Drama!

The last release of the Sankranthi season, Shatamanam Bhavati has finally hit the screens. Starring Sharwanand and Anupama Parameswaran, this film is produced by Dil Raju. Let’s see how the film turns out to be.
The movie is set in the backdrop of a small village called Atreyapuram. Raju garu(Prakash Raj) lives a peaceful life along with his wife(Jayasudha) and grandson Raju(Sharwanand). The only thing which bothers him is the fact that his sons and daughter, who live abroad hardly visit him.
Upset by this, he makes a clever plan and calls back his entire family during the Sankranthi festival. The twist in the tale arises when Raju garu’s wife finds out about her husband’s plan and gets upset big time.
This is also the time when small disturbances creep in within the family and create a tense situation. What is Raju garu’s actual intention? Why did he make that plan? What went wrong in the family? To know answers to these questions, you need to watch the film on the big screen.
Plus Points:-
One of the basic plus points of the film is the clean entertainment that the film has. The family drama looks quite natural and every character is designed as one amongst us. Unlike his previous films, Sharwanand plays a very lovable role and impresses with his subtle performance and screen presence.
Anupama Parameswaran does not let go of the golden chance and gives a striking performance. Her pairing with Sharwa and the couple’s chemistry looks quite pleasing. As expected, the hit pair of Prakash Raj and Jayasudha carry off their roles with aplomb. Their experience and screen presence brings a lot of depth to the strong emotions that are conveyed in the film.
Naresh gets yet another interesting role and is impressive in his character. The climax is also a good asset to the film. The way family values are showcased during this time will go down well with the every section of the audience.
Minus Points:-
Family dramas like these do not have much in terms of storyline. The same is the case for Shatamanam Bhavati as there are not many interesting twists in the film which can keep you hooked.
The plot is very thin and predictable for most part of the film. There are certain comedy scenes in the film which look quite forced. Pace of the film gets bogged down slightly during the second half and things start getting a tad boring with routine scenes.
Technical Aspects:-
Music by Mickey J Meyer is superb as all the songs have been shot wonderfully. Camerawork needs a special mention as the visuals look quite colorful. The small town set up, romance and all the basic emotions have been wonderfully showcased by DOP Sameeer Reddy. Editing is just about okay and the production values of Dil Rjau are top notch. Dialogues are simple yet quite meaningful.
Coming to the director Satish, he has done a good job with the film. Even though he chose a very routine and outdated storyline, the way he has showcased the importance of family bonding and respect towards your loved ones needs to be appreciated. Had he made the proceedings even crispier during the second half, the outcome would have been even better.
On the whole, Shatamanam Bhavati is a clean family entertainer which showcases the various emotions that parents go through when their loved ones stay away from them. Strong family bonding, lively atmosphere, and natural performances are basic assets. If you ignore the routine and outdated story line, this film has some very decent moments which you can enjoy with your entire family this festive season.
