The Filipino Monolingual Dictionaries and the Development of Filipino Lexicography

Profile image of loonah chi

This study tackles the development of writing Filipino dictionaries by presenting critical review analyses of the three of the most current Filipino monolingual dictionaries published by the two most authoritative institutions of Filipino language: the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino [KWF] (formerly the Institute of National Language, then became the Linangan ng Wika sa Pilipinas [LWP]), and the Sentro ng Wikang Filipino (SWF). The oldest of the three is the first edition of KWF's (then LWP's) Diksyunaryo ng Wikang Filipino (1989). The second is the centennial edition of the same dictionary (1998), still published by the KWF. And the last is the UP Diksyonaryong Filipino (2001), published by the SWF. The study primarily aims to provide a preliminary discussion of the development of monolingual lexicography of Filipino. The examination of these dictionaries is done by applying lexicographic principles in writing monolingual dictionaries. This study found several errors in the writing of these dictionaries and concludes that such errors were primarily due to the lack of substantial corpus collection.

Filipino lexicography deals with two problems related to the linguistic features of the language: the lexicon and the grammatical features including orthography. This paper analyzes how the Diksyunaryong Monolingwal sa Filipino (DMF) copes with these issues. With regards to the first, the DMF dealt with the problem of defining the Filipino lexicon by creating a corpus using several types of written texts. Its definition of Filipino, however, is still tied to the old form which was primarily based on Tagalog, an outdated formulation of the national language. Nevertheless, the DMF separates itself from previous dictionaries through its use of a clearly defined mechanism in building a corpus. In its use of the corpus to describe the meaning of the lemma, the DMF displays several faults. This includes definitions which refer to senses and have sexual connotations, direct translation, vague definition of some verbal derivations, and use of technical definition. In the lexicographic descr...

Michael Wilson I Rosero

In this paper we looked at the relative effectiveness of the two types of dictionary as an instrument in gaining vocabulary competence from L1 to L2 . We then tried to see what attributes of a dictionary can be accounted for, to say that it is pedagogic. We argue that a pedagogic English-Filipino dictionary must have (1) definitions which (a) do not only provide the nearest equivalents but contextualizes the definitions by way of giving of practical descriptions and situations, and (b) employs the most frequently-used words in Filipino; and (2) sample sentences in Filipino that demonstrates actual usage of the word.

Jessie Grace Rubrico

This paper reviews briefly, some lexical works produced during the three periods of Philippine linguistics: the Spanish Period (1521 to 1899); the American Regime (1900 to 1950); the Contemporary Period (1951 to the present): Encarnacion (1885); Rafferty (1928); Hermosisima (1966), Wolff (1972) and Trosdal (1990); and Guerrero, et.al. (1970). Five of these works are bilingual dictionaries with Cebuano lexical items as main entries--. Encarnacion, Rafferty, Hermosisima, Wolff, and Trosdal; Guerrero, et.al. on the other hand, is a four language dictionary using English as object language and Filipino, Cebuano, and Hiligaynon as languages of description. This paper will look into the format of these dictionaries, as well as their degree of adequacy, simplicity, and economy as these may determine their usefulness to their target users --and, in effect the attainment of their objectives.

Jean Francois Delmer

This end of term paper concludes a "lexicography" class where we analyzed and compared dictionaries of Philippine languages. I chose to compare dictionaries of Tagalog (or "Pilipino", or "Filipino"), from different periods of the Philippines history - the Spanish period, the American period, and the Independent Philippine, contemporaneous period. In a first section, I compare selected works from structural, orthographic, phonologic representation, morphological, grammatical standpoints. I am not a speaker of Tagalog, so it is difficult for me to assess those works from the standpoint of their semantic relevance or accuracy. To compensate for this shortcoming, in a second section I present a few "experiments" (word searches) where, beyond dictionaries, I looked at two other types of lexical works - "VerbNets" and Comparative Word Lists.

Camilo M Villanueva, Jr

The exploratory-descriptive study tries to show that the two languages of the Philippine bilingual educational system--two languages-in-progress--are heading to a convergence as it proves empirically that Filipino is no different from and is contributing to the expansion, development, and evolution of Philippine English as both are codified in the standard lexicons of the two languages. The paper identifies the features exhibited by and the word-formation processes involved in the new words from Sawikaan's Words of the Year winners that were entered in the University of the Philippines' Diksiyunaryong Filipino (2010) and are at the same time standard words in the Oxford Dictionary of World English Online (2010). An initial result and contribution of the study to this field of research is a table of the most prevalent features of Philippine English in Filipino words using Bautista & Gonzalez (1992) and Borlongan (2007) vis-a-vis the most popular word-formation processes in Filipino-Philippine English based on Zorc (1996), Abello (2002), Reyes-Otero (2002), and KWF (2004).

A closer look at Philippine English word-formation frameworks

Leah Gustilo

This paper is a meta-analysis of the word-formation processes' frameworks used by Filipino speakers of English. It presents these processes that operated in the creation of the Philippine English (henceforth PhilE) lexicon since the 1970's and argues that Philippine English lexical-formation creatively dances with the changing of time. The limited studies on the present thesis conducted from 1973 to 2015 show interesting lexical items created through the existing L1 English word-formation processes. Philippine English lexical items culled from the early 21 st century writings were formed through the existing word-formation processes and through creative expansions or modifications of such processes with the deliberate integration of figures of speech such as anagram, metonymy, onomatopoeia, oxymoron, and pun. This paper, therefore, proposes a tentative composite modified framework adopted from all existing L1 English and ESL variety frameworks surveyed in this study.

The research study focused on the awareness of the respondents from Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration of the Polytechnic University on the Filipino translated lexes preferred for use in the field of accountancy and business. It also focused on the lexes from the list which the respondents used on their daily job-life and need to be revised to adapt with the need of the time. The research gave proposed translations from the practitioners to propagate, standardize and intellectualize the Filipino language. The Input-Process-Output Approach was used in the study. Percentage computation was adapted to determine how many among the respondents were aware and was using the lexicons in everyday job-life. Weighted mean and its description were also utilized by the researcher to determine which lexes were functional or not. In conclusion, it had been shown that most of the respondents were aware of the translated terminologies in Filipino but prefer to use the English terminologies in most opportunities. Although, most of the terminologies translated in Filipino were known to the respondents and mostly used them in all opportunities, the respondents still felt needs to revise the translation done by KWF. The respondents suggested if translating terms in accountancy and business, take into consideration the length of the words, global competitiveness, the very fast-changing terminologies due to technology and the manner how terms were translated. With these points, the study implied an immense improvement on the national language development to keep pace on globalization though how dominant English language in the Philippines in the field of accountancy and business affecting the need to translate the terms in Filipino. With the conclusion stated, the study recommended the following: (1) non restriction on the use of Taglish, (2) consider the natural translation of the terms from places of usage, (3) strengthen campaigns and dissemination of materials, and (4) publication of more books, articles, pamphlets written in Filipino.

Alfa Muhammed Salisu

The emergence of Arabic language and Islamic religion in the Malay Archipelago which comprises the present day Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, part of the Philippines as well as southern Thailand gave birth to Islamic education through the medium of Arabic language. This was inevitable because of the mutual relationship between Arabic language and Islam. To have better understanding of the Quran as the primary source of Islam is to have mastery of Arabic language. Hence the Muslim scholars in the Malay Archipelago resorted to the writing of Arabic Malay dictionaries which could help in the proper understanding of Arabic texts such as the Quran and Hadith which were primarily in Arabic language. This effort continues from generation to another until modern times which gave rise to the production of different types of Arabic Malay bilingual dictionaries. Some of these dictionaries have contributed to the general education of the Malays for their precision in translation. This study however, is an attempt to examine and analyse the contributions of selected Malay Arabic dictionaries to the Malay world in order to determine their precision in translation from Arabic to Malay language with reference to their methodologies with the aim of suggesting standards by which an ideal and all-encompassing Arabic Malay bilingual dictionary could emerge.
