Robin Hood: Heroic Outlaw. Essay

Issues and problems are realities of life and the success of every individual depends on how effectively they deal with the issues. It is through a very well planned strategy that people effectively deal with issues and prepare themselves for a more competent living. In the case study of Robin Hood, there is an apparent issue which he struggles to deal with. The main issue in the case is the hero’s inability to convince the followers the need to change Merrymen’s policy of outright confiscation of goods to one of a fixed transit tax in order to check the growing power and greater organization of the Sheriff. At a time when the followers are totally against his proposal to adopt new policies, Robin Hood had to seek out new strategies to brazen out the power of the Sheriff who by this time earned the money and the men, and was prepared to pester the band. Besides, he had the support of powerful friends at court and especially that of the regent, Prince John. However, there were some very important situations in favor of Robin Hood and if he made use of these situations, he could formulate a strategy to tackle the issue effectively. Therefore, it is important that Robin Hood is aware of the various factors in the situation and select the most appropriate strategy in response to the given situation.

There are several powerful people as well as the barons who are not in good terms with Prince John who was greatly unpopular. The people wished to join under the leadership of King Richard and promoting the king’s cause will ensure that the people join hands in the struggle against the Sheriff. Therefore, in an analysis of the case, it becomes evident that the best conclusion to the issue can be arrived at when Robin Hood considers the possibility of holding the people together under the leadership of the king. It will also ensure that the powers of the Sheriff are well checked. However, it is notable that the hero cannot endeavor to join the conspiracy right away as there are various complications in such a move. The spies of the enemy could ruin him and there is the risk that the conspiracy turns out to be a failure. In a deeper analysis of the case, it becomes clear that the character needs to take some risks in life as there are no other alternative options. If Robin Hood needs to achieve success in the given case, he should go ahead with the plans for new policies which his followers do not think practical. Here, he needs to trust the strength of the king and his popularity and prepare a strategy to strengthen the plea for the king and against the vicious men. It is not a simple task as the power and reach of the enemy is high. In the formulation of the strategy, the hero also needs to be tactful not to be directly against the enemies in the preliminary phases. First, develop the motion against Prince John in favor of the people pleading for King Richard and strengthen the confidence of the followers by actions. It is also important that Robin Hood leads the motion by the barons against the prince and make sure that the opposing powers against the prince and the Sheriff are well kept under one head. Through these strategic actions Robin Hood can ensure that his original plans are carried on. Similarly, these actions also mean that there is a deep meditated strategy for the action which will deal with the issue at hand.

The story begins with Robin Hood , who is on his way to an archery contest, but accidentally kills one of the sheriff's officers. This causes Robin to live a life of being an outlaw. The Sheriff vows to catch Robin Hood for his crimes and in each of the three stories he tries to.

In the first story, he sent a Tinker to serve papers to Robin; however, Robin gives the Tinker a strong drink that makes him sleepy and steals the papers.

In the second story, the Sheriff holds an archery match in Nottingham, hoping to lure Robin. However, Robin comes in disguise, wins the first prize, and leaves the Sheriff a note. Later, the Sheriff captures Will Stutely and announces that he will be hanged for his crimes. However, Little John (another outlaw) postpones the execution just so Robin and his men could save Will.

Robin returns to Nottingham with a disguise, and a meat cart, and sets up both next to the Guild Hall, where he was invited to a feast by the Sheriff. Robin then sells the Sheriff a deer instead of the cattle, which is what he thought was going to eat.

In the third story, the King steps up and hires a thief, Guy of Guisbourne, to kill Robin Hood. However, Robin Hood wins the confrontation, but later gets a fever. Robin hides in his cousin, Prioress of the Nunnery of Kirklees, home for treatment. However, his cousin betrays and kills Robin.

The Robin Hood legend, as shown in this movie, tells the story of the reconciliation between the Saxon people and the Normans who had conquered England in 1066. It was this reconciliation which created the English people as we know them today.

POSSIBLE PROBLEMS

MINOR. Robin’s arrows always seem to strike his opponents in the heart, and they die then and there without blood, which is exactly the way that children play at war, cops and robbers, etc. There is a little graphic violence when a Saxon is struck in the head. There is a potentially disturbing scene in which a little girl pleads for her father’s life.

PARENTING POINTS

Before watching the film, explain to your child how many cultures have created a story about a populist hero who is willing to risk a great deal in order to right various wrongs. Cultures also develop stories and myths to explain their origins. The story of Robin Hood is just such a myth. In 1066, almost a thousand years ago, Norman invaders from France conquered England. The people who lived in England at the time were primarily from two tribes, the Angles and the Saxons. After the conquest, the Normans became the privileged aristocrats; the Angles and Saxons were the farmers and the servants whose labor supported the expensive living style of the conquerors. Over several hundred years, the two groups began to intermarry and meld together to create the English people. Robin Hood is an Anglo-Saxon, from a former princely family of the conquered peoples. Maid Marion is a Norman. In the story, their marriage symbolizes the melding of the two groups, the Norman conquerors and the indigenous Angles and Saxons.

HELPFUL BACKGROUND

The Normans were descendants of Viking raider/settlers who controlled Normandy, a region in Northwest France. A Norman Army led by William the Conqueror invaded England in 1066. At that time England was ruled by Saxons, a tribe that had crossed into England from Germany. The Normans were fierce warriors and able administrators. William consolidated his hold over England by giving land to his barons in return for their agreement to provide knights for his army.

For several centuries there was conflict between the Normans and the Saxons before the two peoples merged into what is now referred to as the English people. The Robin Hood story is a myth of the integration process with the Saxon peasants looking to the Norman King Richard for protection against oppression by the Norman aristocracy. Note that the Norman aristocrat, Lady Marion, marries Robin, a Saxon.

Richard I, also called Richard Coeur de Lion, reigned from 1189 to 1199. All but six months of this time he was out of England. He participated in the Third Crusade and conquered Cyprus and Acre in 1191. He retook Jaffa for the Christians in 1192. On his way home, Richard I was captured by King Leopold of Austria and held for ransom until 1194. He returned to England for a short time and then fought in France until his death.

The legend of Robin Hood is perhaps the best example of the outlaw who robs the rich to give to the poor. Such individuals have been the themes of legends for hundreds of years.

Suggested Response:

The consensus is that some redistribution of wealth imposed by the government is both necessary and just. According to most religious traditions, the rich should provide for the poor, but in reality, the wealthy don’t voluntarily give enough to meet the needs of the poor. In addition, the wealthy and middle classes benefit more than the poor from services provided by the government, such as defense, security at home, corporate welfare, tax shelters, the home mortgage interest deduction, etc. While most agree that some redistribution of wealth is good public policy, there is a vigorous debate over just how much wealth should be redistributed.

The legend of Robin Hood is a well-known tale; historian claims that the story is more of a mythical figure while others argue that Robin Hood truly existed. The English story of Robin Hood and his merry men is a captivating tale of the nineteenth century. Robin Hood‘s story gives readers a good impression about a noble person showing the experiences Robin Hood went through when he was a little boy. The readers understand how great he is and how he was helpful to his community. Robin Hood story is about a hero who faces many issues very early in his life, as his mother died making life unbearable. Robin could not live with love from another woman apart from his mother.

Robin left home for many years to come back and find that his father was murdered. He was shocked by the turn of events because the new leader of Nottingham was corrupt; people were suffering under the corrupt rule from the sheriff who was hungry and greedy. The lower members of this community were the most affected. Robin presented different traits by taking the wealth acquired by the greedy sheriff giving them to the poor community members.   Robin Hood planned to kill the sheriff and the kingdom. He is persistent and did not stop to achieve his goals that included giving back all the things his people had lost.

Robin Hood is presented as a charismatic person who believed he was doing the right thing and he attracted many followers. However, not everyone looked at him positively his brother felt that he had betrayed his people because many of them had been killed. Robin Hood‘s brother feels that he was doing everything to achieve his objective, but not to benefit the community. His brother felt that Robin Hood is selfish because he left the family because his father had replaced his mother who died. Even though his brother does not understand his intention that is to give back what is taken from them by the authorities, his brother finally understand his good intentions and helps him take down the corrupt regime.

One of Robin outstanding traits is he never feared his enemies, even in a situation where he was outnumbered. His courage is a great trait that gives the reader a good impression of a good leader, his calmness and his skills makes him a hero. Robin heroism is seen how he utilizes his skills to fight including archery that he learned, as a young boy seems to be valuable. However, Maid Marion viewed Robin as more as a spoiled child and never thought highly of him until they later knew him.

The story presents two sides of Robin as a child and as an adult who came back after several years o rescue his community.  After reading the story of Robin Hood, readers get the positive side of Robin. Robin uses his skills and traits for the betterment of the poor people of his community by fighting corruption. According to the story, he goes to Nottingham castle to fight the corrupt leadership. The author connects different scenes to highlight the theme of the story that is courage. The author presents details of his childhood and his life experiences making the story more interesting. Robin Hood good traits are easily seen throughout the story

Showing the different perspective and the changes Robin Hood went through since he was a little boy until the time he became an adult easily allows the reader to understand his noble characters. Robin Hood tales reminds us to fight for justice by helping the less privileged people in our community.
