'Vedha' movie review: Dark, brave and sends a strong message

Revenge is always a powerful plot device in our films, and Shivarajkumar, in his 125th film Vedha, has a wild kind of justice rational to exact his vengeance. Fans of Shivanna will be ecstatic about the all-out action character he plays in the film. However, interestingly, Shivarajkumar is not playing a character that will be seen in every frame of Vedha. The film is actually a women-centric film, which revolves around a thirst for vengeance, and Shivanna’s unstinting support for the cause.

The story is told by a retired police officer Ramaa (Veena Ponnappa) to her granddaughter, a corporate employee harassed by a man in a mode of public transport. The tale traces incidents that the cop witnessed during her tenure and is centred on Kanaka (Aditi Sagar). After being imprisoned in jail as a juvenile, Kanaka is released to her father, Vedha. A fiery Kanaka, even though battered and traumatised, has a steely resolve and goes on a relentless mission of vengeance along with her father. Who can stop the two, and why are they wreaking havoc is told in a non-linear fashion as we traverse two distinct timelines of the 60s and 80s.

Director Harsha’s signature is all over the film, and his comfort level with his frequent collaborator, Shivanna, is clear in their fourth film together. Without compromising on the commercial elements, Vedha has a new style of narration.Even though Shivanna is the hero, he does not hog all the limelight, and the film is firmly focussed on the women of the film, who are undoubtedly the highlight of Vedha.

Shivarajkumar, who has two shades in Vedha, mostly speaks with action and the director has made excellent use of his expressions and body language. The star clearly knows his job, and is only getting better with age. Be it the fiery action sequences, or the cheery dance numbers, Shivanna infuses energy in every frame. Aditi Sagar shines in her debut, and the way she brings to life Harsha’s vision is a testament to her talent.

Ganavi Laxman also sparkles in two shades while Shwetha Chengappa as a sex worker has an important role to play. As long as Umashree is on screen, she laughs and charms with her performance. Director Harsha could have given more importance to the senior actor’s role. Raghu Shivamogga gets to play a pivotal role while good support comes from Ch. Gurudutt, Manju Pavagada, Govindegowda, Veena Ponnappa, and Rekha. Bharat Sagar. Cheluvaraj, Sanjeev and Vinay Biddappa are excellent as the antagonists.

Set in a village backdrop, and mostly made on the sets, cinematographer J Swamy accentuates the visual quality of the film with his work in natural light, and using dark tones.The song ‘Gillakko Shiva..’ blends with fight sequences, and moves uninterruptedly in the background. There is something new in Junjappa’s song and Arjun Janya has come up with an innovative background score too. A period drama, Vedha is dark, brave and sends the message of women empowerment, which still holds good in today’s times.

Vedha review: A blaring revenge story led by a very impressive female cast and, of course, Shiva Rajkumar

There's an interesting correlation between Shiva Rajkumar's massive stardom and the box-office results of some of his recent outings. There isn't an inkling of doubt regarding how much he is adored as a scion and a superstar but, at the same time, his films of late have somehow not found the commercial approval that one expects. But that doesn't deter the 60-year-old actor who, while enjoying his place in the sun, is yet to grow complacent and has evidently decided to make the best of what's left in his hay years as a leading man. In the same vein, one sees a shift in his stance as he gradually makes way for pivotal & meaningful discussions to take centre stage in his movies and allows his stature to be only a lure of some kind for his many million fans.

In the last few of his films, one finds Shiva Rajkumar worrying less about his position as a star and more about the world around him. Vedha , his fourth film with filmmaker/choreographer A. Harsha, is a shining example of this.

By all means, Vedha is a revenge saga and A. Harsha (also the writer) has no qualms in announcing that emphatically. The film's opening scene reveals that we are going to be taken back in time, as an elderly woman recounts the story to her young granddaughter - on one hand, the writer uses this as a trope to build the legend of Vedha, to hand-hold us into the alluring world that is set in the 1960s and '80s. But on the other, he also uses the 'recounting' motif to enunciate that the film's central concern, that of sexual violence against women, is still very much a relevant one, regardless of the era in time. In this and many other regards, one finds Vedha to be A. Harsha's most discerning film to date and as much as it is submerged in the mainstream, the writer-director exhibits such clarity in intent that you are likely to remain glued to the screen the whole time.

And though it may seem in certain segments that he is in search of brownie points for selecting a "poignant" topic, the viewer also realizes in the same vein that he, along with the entire core team, is uncompromised in driving their message home. The approach is quite certainly loud and wishy-washy (even cringe in some parts) because it emerges from a strong male gaze, and the writing too sometimes refuses to humanize its women, but the film works mainly by lending a great platform to its female cast to flex its muscles. 

One of the more glaring aspects of the film, which is likely to surprise the viewer, is that it isn't a Shiva Rajkumar vehicle. Although he plays the titular role, the veteran actor is benevolent enough to let the subject matter take precedence and as much as his star is celebrated in the action portions, none of it, luckily, seems overbearing. The entire ethos of Vedha is aggressive but A. Harsha seems keen on letting his two female leads, Ganavi Laxman (as Vedha's wife Pushpa) and Aditi Sagar (also Shwetha Changappa), land some of the biggest and best punches. Both actors are refreshingly boorish on screen and manage to light up the screen every time they pick up a machete - while Ganavi Laxman forays into unexplored territories with her stark 'macho' performance, Aditi Sagar impresses in her debut outing with a stealthy, almost chilly on-screen presence. 

Shwetha Changappa of Majaa Talkies fame too gets a meaty role to her name and the actress puts on a memorable show. The rest of the cast includes veteran actress Umashree, Veena Ponnappa, Raghu Shivamogga, Jaggapaa, Cheluvaraj, and Vinay Bidappa (of K.G.F: Chapter 1 fame), among others who fit well into the narrative.

Art Director Ravi Santhehakklu and cinematographer Swamy J. Gowda need a special mention for combinedly creating an intriguing world of Vedha - while the former keeps the set pieces and embellishments to the bare minimum, not letting the production design be an in-your-face facet, the latter (along with colourist Ashirwad) imbues the visual palette with a sense of doom and tragedy - the blend of muted, greyish tones and striking warm colours work perfectly well. Arjun Janya's background score and song numbers are unabashedly thumping and loud but the soundtrack has enough richness to elevate the mood of the cinema hall.

When was the last time you found a group of men raving about the female cast of a Kannada film headlined by a major superstar? In an attempt to witness the Shivanna fandom at its rawest, I caught the 5 a.m. show in Bengaluru and it'd be safe to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. While the veteran actor had his dedicated share of hoots and whistles, it was the female cast that shined the brightest and the entire hall bustled with pride and joy every time one of them delivered a blow or a juicy punchline. Vedha , that said, isn't devoid of concerns and one might find the transgression of the film a bit too alarming and implausible, given the sensitivity of the subject matter. But the film has the heart in the right place and aside from all the contrivances, it is an enjoyable watch.

Shiva Rajkumar is in iconic hero in the Kannada film world and Vedha, directed by A Harsha, proves that the 60-year-old actor still has what it takes to woo his fans.

The movie starts off by showing a young woman being harassed by a man on public transport. She comes home and complains to her grandmother, who then proceeds to read her the story of Vedha (Shiva Rajkumar) and the movie starts to go back in time.

Director A Harsha cuts from the 1960s, where we see a young Vedha and how he gets married to Pushpa (Ganavi Laxman), to the 1980s, where we see Vedha and his daughter Kanaka (Aditi Sagar), going on a revenge killing spree. The father and daughter seem to be looking for a certain set of people and head from one place to another in this revenge drama. While police inspector Rama (Veena Ponappa) is hot on their pursuit, Paari (Shweta Chengappa), a sex worker, is intent on killing Vedha’s friend (Raghu Shimoga). What happened to Pushpa? Why are Vedha and Kanaka killing these men?

Shiva Rajukumar had worked with director Harsha in three films earlier and this 125th film of his is a landmark of sorts for both of them. Vedha has been smartly written by Harsha so as to keep the audience engaged throughout the movie – while there is action, there is plenty of sentiment and he chooses to show Vedha as someone who believes in women empowerment and standing up for women’s rights. This is sure to strike a chord with Shiva Rajkumar’s fans, as the Kannada star is choosing stories that have more meaning to society. Perhaps he is changing directions at this point in his career.

The women in this movie all have strong performance-oriented roles and we see Vedha take a backseat for a large part, allowing these women – from the police officer to the daughter – to showcase their strength on screen. Actors Shwetha Chengappa, Veena Ponappa, Umashree, Ganavi Laxman, and Aditi Sagar, really shine in this film in their respective roles.

Having said that, the film has some shades of KGF 2 in the way that it has been shot. In fact, the don who runs the mines looks unabashedly like Rocky Bhai. And the inclusion of the religious aspect in some scenes reminds us of Kantara. One also wonders whether Vedha’s wife is named Pushpa and the song titled Pushpa Pushpa was an effect of the Telugu film Pushpa. Or perhaps this was a nod by the director to those successful films.

Vedha does have its share of flaws, but when compared to its intention and the way the actresses performed in the film, those can be overlooked. The cinematography by Swami J Gowda is excellent and the music by Arjun Janya is a major plus for this film.

As stated, Vedha is the 125th of Shiva Rajkumar and his fans are definitely not going to be disappointed with this flick.

'Vedha' movie review: Shivarajkumar wages a lone battle, again

Hat-trick her Shivarajkumar’s 125th film Vedha has a solid plot. Director A Harsha has chosen sexual assaults against minors, as the theme for the flick. It is a story of a girl who is a victim of gang rape. She is falsely imprisoned for a murder. She later combines with her father to take revenge against her perpetrators.

The revenge drama is set in the 1960s and concludes around 1985. The central characters believe that those committing sexual atrocities against women must be killed.

Harsha drastically fails in execution, letting a decent opportunity go out of his hands. He heavily depends on a non-linear narrative and uses too many flashbacks to make the plot convoluted. The audience will have to really struggle to make sense of the movie. Some fast-paced dialogues aren’t clear either.

Arjun Janya’s background score and music composition is tortuous. Janya’s work in no way complements the film’s theme. At times, his music seems inspired from KGF: Chapter 2 . All four songs affect the pace of the narration.

Only the director knows why he set the film in the 1960s and named it as Vedha . There are no justifications for his creative decisions in the film.

As always, Shivarajkumar comes out with an energetic performance and single-handedly carries the film on his shoulders. Ganavi Laxman, Umashri, Shwetha Chengappa, Veena Ponappa and Aditi Sagar impress with their performances.

The cinematography from Swami J Gowda is a plus but shots remind us of the KGF franchise.

Shivarajkumar’s 100th film Jogayya fell flat after carrying massive hype. His 125th film is all set to meet a similar fate. However, the seasoned actor can’t be blamed for the director’s blunders.

Vedha kannada movie review: visual feast for shiva rajkumar fans.

Sandalwood hattrick hero Shiva Rajkumar's 125th film, Vedha released in more than 300 theatres today. Shivanna fans flocked theatres in large numbers for the early morning shows. Huge cutouts of the century star has been erected in all the single screen theatres across Bengaluru, especially in those near the Gandhinagar area of Majestic.

Vedha is Shivanna's home production, bankrolled by his wife, Geetha. The film is helmed by Harsha. Starring Umahsree, Ghanavi Laxman, Aditi Sagar, Shweta Chenagappa, Cheluvaraju, Raghu Shivamogga, Vinay Bidappa, Kuri Pratap, Prasanna, Lasya Nagaraj, Bharat Sagar, Sanjeev, Charvi Fowda among others in the lead roles, Vedha boasts of commercial elements as well as a social message. The music has been scored by Sandalwood music sensation Arjun Janya. Swamy J Gowda is the cinematographer. The dialogues have been written by Raghu Niduvalli.

The film has raised huge expectations among the audience considering this a milestone film of Dr. Shiva Rajkumar. Even the actor himself has pinned huge hopes on this movie. In one of the interviews, Shivanna said that he is very confidence about the style of narration in Vedha. This is the third collabatoration between the actor-duo after hits like Bhajarangi, Bhajarangi 2 and Vajrakaya.

Shiva Rajkumar's Vedha Movie Review

Even after acting in 100+ movies, Shivanna remains an evergreen hero in the Kannada Film industry. He is one actor who remains young at heart and has maintained a fit physique that even puts a few young actors to shame. 

It's been 36 years since Shiva Rajkumar entered the industry. Since then, he has always chosen unique scripts. The actor has made it a point to play all kinds of roles—hero, villain, brother etc. Now, his 125th film too is way different from what he has played so far. 

What is Vedha all about? Vedha Plot: The movie is a revenge drama in which Shiva Rajkumar (Vedha) and his daughter Aditi Sagar (Kanaka) play central characters. The two are out to get revenge, there's a lot of action and drama which at times shakes up the audience, who will get to know the real reason behind their vengeful activities in the climax.

Performances:   Shiva Rajkumar shines in the role of Vedha. He delivers a spellbinding performance as a stern person. His role has two shades. He expresses more with his eyes than his dialogues. And as expected, Shivanna is high on energy and makes the audience wonder again if this actor's age has really crossed 50. Shiva Rajkumar displays as much energy in his dance and action scenes as he did during the initial days of his career.

Aditi Sagar , who plays his daughter, complements him in terms of performance. And it's hard to believe that she has shined in her very first opportunity against a star actor like Shivanna. The actress holds a lot of promise and there is no doubt, she has a bright future in the film industry.

Ghanavi Laxman needs no introduction as we already know she's immensely talented. On the other hand, Shweta Chengappa's character holds a lot of weightage in Vedha. Senior Kannada actress Umashree adds comic relief to the scenes and keeps the audience smiling throughout her screen time. Raghu Shivamogga has bagged his career best role in Shivanna's Vedha, which he does justice to. The supporting cast too, do their bit in elevating the movie scenes.

Director Harsha has proven on more than one occasion that he has the ability to steer the ship in the right direction. He successfully manages to do so in Vedha too. However, the uniqueness of Vedha script lies in the fact that no one person is glorified. Even though the audience throng theatres to see Shivanna as the hero and the main lead, Aditi overshadows him in a powerful role. Harsha does a fine job of balancing roles by giving equal importance to bringing out the best in every actor. That's not it, Shiva Rajkumar seems to have okayed a script which is high on woman power. But he is okay and perhaps that's what sets him apart in the industry. He is a seasoned actor, but fine playing roles where the focus is not entirely on him. 

Vedha is set in the 1960s and a heart-wrenching tale which keeps the audience at the edge of their seats. I do not want to spoil the suspense. Here are the major takeaways from the Shivarajkumar movie Vedha.

Shivanna's entry will thrill the audience

ఒకప్పుడు కన్నడ సినిమాలంటే పట్టించుకునే వాళ్లు కాదు కానీ ఇప్పుడలా కాదు. తమ గురించి పట్టించుకునేలా చేస్తున్నాయి అక్కడి సినిమాలు. ఈ క్రమంలోనే తాజాగా కన్నడ స్టార్ హీరో శివరాజ్ కుమార్ నటించిన వేద సినిమా విడుదలైంది. డిసెంబర్‌లోనే కన్నడలో విడుదలైన ఈ చిత్రానికి అక్కడ మంచి రెస్పాన్స్ వచ్చింది. పైగా ఇది శివన్న 125వ సినిమా. మరి తెలుగులో దీనికి రెస్పాన్స్ ఎలా ఉంది.. అసలు వేద ఎలా ఉన్నాడు..?

మైసూరులో నీల అనే అమ్మాయిని బస్సులో కొందరు ఏడిపిస్తుంటారు. ఇంటికి వచ్చి తన నాయనమ్మ, రిటైర్డ్ ఇన్స్‌పెక్టర్ రమా (శ్వేతా చెంగప్ప)కు చెప్పి ఏడుస్తుంది. అప్పుడు ఆ బామ్మ తన కెరీర్‌లో తాను చూసిన వేద (శివరాజ్ కుమార్) కథ తన మనవరాలికి చెప్తుంది. 1980ల్లో వేద, తన కూతురు కనక (అదితి సాగర్)తో కలిసి కొందర్ని అతి కిరాతకంగా చంపేస్తుంటారు. అలా ఒక్కో ఊరికి వెళ్లి తమకు గతంలో అన్యాయం చేసిన వాళ్లను ఏరి మరీ నరికేస్తుంటారు. గత 20 ఏళ్ళు వెనక్కి వెళ్తే అనుకోని పరిస్థితుల్లో పక్క ఊళ్ళో ఉండే పుష్ప (గనవి లక్ష్మణ్)ను పెళ్లి చేసుకుంటాడు వేద. వాళ్లకు కనక అనే కూతురు కూడా ఉంటుంది. ఓ సందర్భంలో ఊరి గొడవల కారణంగా మూడు రోజులు జైలుకు వెళ్తాడు వేద. జైలు నుంచి విడుదలయ్యే సమయానికి తన భార్య పుష్పను కొందరు దారుణంగా కొట్టి చంపేస్తారు.. అలాగే 8 ఏళ్ళ కూతుర్ని జైలుకు పంపిస్తారు. ఒక్క రోజులోనే జీవితం తలకిందులు కావడంతో గుండెలు పగిలేలా ఏడుస్తాడు వేద. అప్పటి వరకు ఆనందంగా ఉన్న వేద జీవితంలో అంత పెను మార్పు ఏం జరిగింది..? తన కుటుంబానికి అన్యాయం చేసిందెవరు..? ఎందుకు వాళ్లందరినీ కూతురుతో పాటు వేద చంపేస్తుంటాడు అనేది అసలు కథ..

వేద కథ చూడ్డానికి చాలా సింపుల్‌గా ఉంటుంది. తన కుటుంబానికి అన్యాయం చేసిన ఐదుగురు వ్యక్తులను వెతుక్కుంటూ వెళ్లి పగ తీర్చుకోవడమే. కానీ అందులోనే చాలా విషయాలు చెప్పాలని చూసాడు దర్శకడు హర్ష. ముఖ్యంగా కన్నడలో శివరాజ్ కుమార్ అంత పెద్ద హీరో అయినా కూడా.. ఈ కథలో మాత్రం ఆయన కేవలం ఓ పాత్రదారిలాగే ఉండిపోయాడు కానీ ఎక్కడా హీరోయిజం చూపించలేదు. సినిమా అంతా ఎక్కువగా మహిళా ప్రాధాన్యంగానే సాగుతుంది. పగ తీర్చుకునే సమయంలోనూ కూతురును ముందుంచుతాడే కానీ.. అత్యవసర పరిస్థితుల్లో కానీ తాను ముందుకెళ్లడు శివన్న. ఇలాంటి కథలను చెప్పడం కాస్త కష్టమైన పనే. కానీ దీన్ని యాక్షన్ జోడించి.. కమర్షియల్ విలువలతో పాటు సందేశాత్మకంగా చిత్రీకిరించే ప్రయత్నం చేసాడు దర్శకుడు హర్ష. తెలియకుండానే చాలా చోట్ల కేజియఫ్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్ కళ్ళ ముందు కనిపిస్తాయి. పగ తీర్చుకునే క్రమంలో మనకు కొన్ని తెలుగు సినిమాలు కూడా గుర్తుకొస్తాయి. ఫస్టాఫ్ అంతా ఆసక్తికరంగా సాగుతుంది. అయితే మధ్యలో వచ్చే శివన్న పెళ్లి ఎపిసోడ్.. అక్కడ వచ్చే కామెడీ సన్నివేశాలు తెలుగులో వర్కవుట్ అవ్వడం కష్టమే. ఇంటర్వెల్ ఎపిసోడ్ చాలా బాగుంది. యాక్షన్ సీన్స్ అయితే ఇరగదీసారు. సెకండాఫ్ కూడా చాలా వరకు ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్‌ను సస్పెన్స్‌లో పెట్టి కథ నడిపించాడు దర్శకుడు హర్ష. అయితే చివరికి ఊహించిన కథనే చూపించాడు. చిన్న కథ చుట్టూ వేద అల్లుకున్నాడు హర్ష. కాకపోతే ఎక్కువగా అమ్మాయిలను గౌరవించడం.. వాళ్ల గొప్పతనం చెప్పే ప్రయత్నమే చేసాడు కథలో. దాంతో పాటు సమాజంలో అమ్మాయిలను మగవాళ్లు ఎంత హీనంగా చూస్తున్నారనేది కూడా అంతర్లీనంగా చెప్పాడు. శివన్న లాంటి స్టార్ హీరో ఈ కథకు తోడు కావడంతో రీచ్ కూడా ఎక్కువగానే వెళ్లింది కన్నడనాట. కానీ తెలుగులో ఈ కథ వర్కవుట్ అవ్వడం కాస్త కష్టమే.. కానీ ప్రయత్నం అయితే మెచ్చుకోకుండా ఉండలేం.

శివరాజ్ కుమార్ అద్భుతంగా నటించాడు. వేద పాత్రకు ప్రాణం పోసాడు. ఆయన రౌద్రం సినిమాకు ప్లస్ పాయింట్. స్టార్ డమ్ పక్కన బెట్టి హీరోయిన్ పాత్రకు పూర్తిగా ప్రాధాన్యత ఇచ్చారు శివన్న. దీనికి నిజంగా ఆయనకు హ్యాట్సాఫ్ చెప్పాల్సిందే. పుష్పగా గనవి లక్ష్మణ్ నటన నెక్ట్స్ లెవల్‌లో ఉంది. ఇక కూతురు కనక పాత్రలో సింగర్ అదితి సాగర్ అద్బుతంగా నటించారు. ఆమె యాక్షన్ సీన్స్ సినిమాకు కలిసొచ్చాయి. మిగిలిన వాళ్లంతా పూర్తిగా కన్నడ నటులే.. అందరూ పాత్రకు తగ్గట్లు నటించారు.

ఈ సినిమాకు సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ ప్రాణంగా నిలిచింది. విజువల్స్ చాలా బాగా తీసారు స్వామి జే గౌడ. అలాగే అర్జున్ జన్యా నేపథ్య సంగీతం బాగుంది. పాటలు మనకు అంతగా కనెక్ట్ అవ్వవు. ఎడిటింగ్ కాస్త వీక్ అనిపించింది. ఫస్టాఫ్‌తో పాటు సెకండాఫ్ కూడా 15 నిమిషాల వరకు తెలుగు వర్షన్ వరకు కత్తిరించి ఉంటే సినిమా మరింత వేగంగా ఉండేదేమో అనిపించింది. దర్శకుడిగా హర్ష మంచి లైన్ తీసుకున్నాడు కానీ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే దగ్గరే కాస్త లోపాలు ఉన్నాయి. మరీ ఫ్లాట్ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే ఇబ్బంది పెడుతుంది. గీతా శివరాజ్ కుమార్ నిర్మాణ విలువలు చాలా బాగున్నాయి.

Director Harsha said that even though it is a commercial movie, there is an important message in this movie. This is the fourth movie coming up in the combination of Shivarajkumar and Harsha. The Telugu dubbed version of the Kannada film, Vedha starring Sandalwood star Shivarajkumar in the lead role has hit the silver screens today. Let’s see how it fares.

Story: The film revolves around the circumstances between time frame 1965-1985. Set in a village named Shirli, the film opens with the story of Vedha(Shivarajkumar) who leads a happy life with his friends. Eventually, he gets married to Pushpa(Ganavi Laxman) in a peculiar situation and the couple will be blessed with a daughter who will be named as Kanaka(Aditi Sagar). Later, a few unexpected incidents make Vedha and his daughter revolt against brutal friends gang led by Beera(Cheluvaraj). What are the incidents? How will the father-daughter duo fight against all odds to achive the target, forms crucial crux.

Performances: Shivarajkumar aka Shivanna did his part perfectly as a man with a sad past. His makeover in the spane of twenty-year showcased nicely. The way he performed a few action stunts will be a treat to watch for the masses.

Ganavi Laxman is a suprise package for the film. While the lady is adorable in her village belle look, her performance during the key scenes in the second half will create a striking impact. The romantic yet funny scenes between Shivarajkumar and Ganavi are shot superbly.

Young girl Aditi Sagar is impressive in her performance oriented role. Her getup and rustic makeover add weightage to the proceedings.

While Veena Ponnappa is believable in her cop role, other padding artists such as Raghu Shivamogga, Lasya Nagaraj, Jaggapa, Cheluvaraj, Prasanna,Vinay Bidappa, Sanjeev and Kuri Prathap are alright in their limited yet key roles.

Technicalities: The music composed by Arjun Janya is one of the major highlights for the film. His background score elevates all key scenes in a superb manner. Especially, the sounding for a couple of action stunts in the second half is simply outstanding.

Adding to music, the photography work by Swamy J. Gowda is yet another highlight for the film. He showcased the rustic 80s setup superbly. Editing work by Deepu S. Kumar is fine as he kept the runtime within limits.

The action choreographers should be appreciated for composed some authentic action blocks.The production design work is captivating and so is the case with the production values by Shivarajkumar’s Geeta Pictures.

Analysis: Written and directed by Harsha, Vedha is a period revenge drama but the director made sure to narrate the proceedings with some high moments at regular intervals. His scene order is good and has a proper set-up that a film needs to entertain the audience.

Though the screenplay looks dull at parts, Harsha balanced the loopholes by inserting engaging moments. To summerize, Vedha is a routine revenge drama but dealt in a different perspective. The heavy duty action sequences blended with family emotions might receive positive feedback from the B and C centres.

Verdict: Action clicks!

Shiva Rajkumar, son of Kannada thespian late Dr Rajkumar, hits a milestone with his 125 th film Vedha . The film, helmed by choreographer-turned-director A Harsha, is out in the theatres this Friday, 23 December.

The movie marks Shiva Rajkumar’s maiden venture under his home banner, Geetha Pictures.

The actor is popular as “Karunada Chakravarthy” and “Hat-trick hero” among his die-hard fans. But does Vedha do justice in celebrating the actor’s milestone on the screen? Well, here’s my take on it:

The multilingual project, which is also released in Tamil and Telugu, has a women-centric subject at its core. It talks about rape/assault against women and children.

A matter of concern since times immemorial, it sounds perfect on paper but the usual and ordinary filmmaking of the director makes Vedha a below-average experience.

Minus a few positive take-ups on the burning issue coupled with the usual best by Shiva Rajkumar, this has nothing new to offer in terms of cinematic experience for the audience. It’s another dud in the end.

Shiva Rajkumar makes up for the flaws

The tone and tenor of the making of Vedha are jam-packed with residual effects of the director’s previous three projects with the actor. Every character looks like they have been reborn to feature in this latest venture.

The light, the costumes, the sets, and even the performances all look too similar.

Unlike his recent directorial such as Vajrakaya , Bhajarangi , and its sequel, where the supreme power – the monkey god – is invoked to fight the evils, it is the father-daughter duo who avenge their loss in Vedha .

Their message is clear: do not spare the ones who dare to rape/assault women/children.

Despite this, Shiva Rajkumar never ceases to amaze us with his energetic performance. It is only because of his passionate portrayal of characters that fills a majority of the flaws in the making of an ordinary venture.

The catchy number “ Junjappa” and “ Pushpa” , sung by the actor himself, bring us relief in this old-wine-in-a-new-bottle film.

The actor is brilliantly supported by Ganavi Laxman, Aditi Sagar, and veteran actor Umashri.

At times when Kannada filmmakers are busy experimenting with out-of-the-box projects, this one is a disappointment, especially when we take into account the golden opportunity that goes begging considering this is Shiva Rajkumar’s 125 th appearance.

Strictly a one-time watch for Shivanna’s fans!

Kannada star actor Shivraj Kumar’s 125th release ‘Veda’ has been a huge success in Karnataka. Since it is an action movie, it was released in the Telugu version with the same name. And let’s see how this revenge action drama impressed the Telugu audience..!!

Story:  Veda lives happily with his wife and children in a village called Shirli. But because of a gang, all their dreams are shattered. With that, Veda (Shivaraj Kumar) and his daughter Kanaka (Aditi Sagar) kill some people in the worst way possible.

Who is that gang? Why did they target the Vedic family and the village? How did Veda take revenge on them? is the plot of the movie “Veda”. Performance of Actors:  Hero Shivraj Kumar proved his seniority. Although it is a bit difficult for his age, the action stunts done with great skill will impress the mass audience.

Ganavi Laxman, the actress who impressed the most, as beautiful as a village girl, acted as cruelly as she did in action blocks. Aditi Sagar, who played the role of the daughter, was also a hit. All the rest of the padding artists felt that the scope of their roles didn’t matter.

Technical performance:  Background music by Arjun Janya is good. Especially the way the action blocks were elevated with the background score made the audience immersed in the film. The songs didn’t sync up with the Telugu Nativity, and the lyrics weren’t great either.

Swami J. Gowda’s cinematography work is a special attraction. In fact, Swamy has elevated a very simple story with just his camera work.

The production design & art work team cannot be praised enough. Because of their excellent work.. There was no unnaturalness anywhere in the period drama.

Harsha, the director, paid more attention to the narration than the story. Therefore, whenever there was an occasion of a bit of shock in the movie, he added an emotional or action block and made the audience not feel bored. Harsha scored more marks as a director than as a storyteller.

Analysis:  If you can enjoy the action blocks & emotional scenes without caring too much about the story, “Veda” is a movie worth watching once in the theatre. However.. It is to be seen how much the collection of this movie will be released in OTT.

‘ವೇದ’ ಇದೊಂದು ಸೇಡಿನ ಕಥೆ. ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ಮಹಿಳೆಯ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಘಟಿಸಿದ ಅನ್ಯಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಅವರನ್ನೇ ಬಡಿದೆಬ್ಬಿಸಿ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕತ್ತಿ ಕೊಡುವ ಚಿತ್ರವೂ ‘ವೇದ’. ಮಹಿಳಾ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳ ಆರ್ಭಟದ ನಡುವೆಯೇ ಶಿವರಾಜ್‌ಕುಮಾರ್‌ ಇಡೀ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಮುನ್ನಡೆಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರ ಮುಂದಾಳತ್ವದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ದುಷ್ಟರ ಸಂಹಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಕತ್ತಿ ಹಿಡಿದು ಹೋರಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರು. ಶಿವಣ್ಣನ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಕೆರಿಯರ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದೆಂದಿಗಿಂತಲೂ ಇದು ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ.

ಈ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ನೋಡಿದ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕ ಶಿವಣ್ಣನ ಲುಕ್‌ಗೆ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮೂಡಿ ಬಂದ ರೀತಿಗೆ ಫಿದಾ ಆಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಸೋಷಿಯಲ್‌ ಮೀಡಿಯಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆಯ ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ನಟನೆ, ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ ಸಂಗೀತ, ನಿರ್ದೇಶನ ಸೇರಿ ಸಾಹಸ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳಿಗೂ ಚಪ್ಪಾಳೆ ತಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ವೇದ ನೋಡಿ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕ ಪ್ರಭು ಏನಂದ? ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ ವಿಮರ್ಶೆ...

Powder Movie Review: Revels in easygoing fun and uncomplicated laughs

Ever wondered what happens when a shipment gets mixed up? Hold on to your seats because this film takes you on a ride with a consignment that swaps its identity, leading to a chaotic and hilarious chain of events.

With Powder , director Janardhan Chikkanna makes his comedic debut, and producers KRG Studios and TVF (The Viral Fever) aim to deliver something refreshingly different. And that’s exactly what you get—forget traditional setups often seen in regular comedies; Powder thrives on its unique brand of hilarity, revelling in a playful rebellion against logic and subtlety. While the humour might take a moment to fully kick in, it eventually delivers a non-stop laugh fest. Let Powder take you on a comedic rollercoaster where the only rule is to leave your expectations at the door.

Meet Annachi (Rangayana Raghu), a man with lofty ambitions who decides to smuggle what we are told is talcum powder from China to India. But in the world of smuggling, things rarely go as planned. Enter the colourful cast: Surya (Diganth), who works at a department store in Mysuru, lives with his friend Karan (Anirudh Acharya), and is in love with Nithya (Dhanya Ramkumar), a nurse.

The film introduces a host of characters, not just one after another but in parallel, weaving them into the plot. However, veteran actor Jaggesh’s narration helps keep the chaos understandable, giving us a backstory for each character, including Sulaiman (Gopal Krishna Deshpande), a competitor to Annachi who is also eyeing the powder consignment. Add to the mix Pawan (Ravi Shankar), searching for a bride, and Mallika (Sharmiela Mandre), who is dealing with a broken marriage at the mandap. She’s not someone you want to mess with—one wrong move, and she’ll knock you out. She is also part of the smuggling gang. However, the gang leader, named Bruce Lee, keeps his identity under wraps.

Things get interesting when Annachi’s consignment arrives, leading to a whirlwind of code mix-ups, misplaced shipments, and a supermarket showdown. The mix-up involves original powder, duplicate boxes, and talcum disguised as something far more valuable.

The famous supermarket in Mysuru becomes the stage for a madcap chase. Surya, Karan, and Nithya know this isn’t just any powder—it’s worth crores! But will the trio, Mallika or Annachi manage to recover it in time, or will the consignment be lost forever?

Gultoo director Janardhan Chikkanna, working from a story by Deepak Venkatesh, takes a detour from his logical roots in Powder , diving headfirst into a whirlwind of dark humour and absurdity. In essence, Powder leans more towards casual amusement than deep entertainment. The first half, with its many characters, may drift by unnoticed, and the second half can be confusing. Overall, the narration could use more clarity. Combined with Vasuki Vaibhav’s music and Advaith Gurumurthy behind the camera, the film’s VFX is an attempt at uniqueness.

The cast is packed with experienced actors. Rangayana Raghu shines with his amusing portrayal, while Diganth, Dhanya Ramkumar, and Anirudh Acharya consistently entertain. Sharmiela Mandre steps into a fresh, distinctive role. Ravi Shankar Gowda brings humour, while Gopal Krishna Deshpande and Nagabhushana add unique elements to the film. Huli Karthik performs his role with skill.

This film is a riotous blend of drug mafias, international dealers, local gangsters, and the innocents, all wrapped up in comedic chaos where the only rule is: Everyone should laugh; that’s what counts! If quirky, dark humour and offbeat storytelling tickle your fancy, Powder might just be your weekend watch.

‘Powder’ movie review: Diganth and a troupe of quirky characters deliver a unique dramedy

‘powder,’ starring diganth in the lead and directed by janardhan chikkanna, is helped by its eccentric characters even if the story isn’t remarkable.

Kannada cinema has had directors approaching comedy in different ways. If one looks at the start of the millennium, Yogaraj Bhat thrived with his refreshing dialogues that reflected the carefree attitude of youngsters. Not many could replicate the magic Bhat weaved over the college-going crowd. 

Guruprasad arrived as a surprise and gave a distinct touch to his two dark comedies starring Jaggesh:  Mata  and  Eddelu Manjunatha. In the early 90s, people enjoyed the unmistakable flavour of comedy in Anant Nag’s  Ganesha  series. And in the 80s, Kashinath made heads turn with his uncompromising approach to sex comedies.

Powder (Kannada)

Apart from some filmmakers who came as a welcome change to revive the genre, comedy in Kannada cinema in the last two decades has suffered from stereotypical handling of humour. Sadhu Kokila continues to play unbearable loud characters while not so long ago, Rangayana Raghu would get wasted in poorly-written, exaggerated humour.

The dry spell of good comedy dramas in the Kannada film industry ended with  Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare  in 2023, a campus drama that broke new grounds in production. And hot on its heels,  Powder,  directed by Janardhan Chikkanna and written by Deepak Venkateshan isn’t your regular comedy drama.

Soorya (Diganth) works at a supermarket in Mysuru, and he shares a room with Karan (Anirudh Acharya). Soorya is trying to woo back his ex Nithya (Dhanya Ramkumar), a nurse. The trio learns about the presence of drugs worth crores stuffed inside talcum powder containers inside Soorya’s store.

They decide to turn rich overnight by selling the drugs, and that brings them into confrontation with drug dealer Annachi (Rangayana Raghu) and his rival Sulemaan (Gopalkrishna Deshpande). The drug racket has an international connection, with a drug lord from China calling the shots. 

The fact that the humour is generated from the idiosyncratic behaviour of the film’s characters rather than overt reliance on dialogues is a plus. In fact, the film doesn’t go overboard with its dialogues, and Trilok Trivikram’s witty lines provide the right effect thanks to their perfect timing in the scenes. Despite suffering from a pacing issue,  Powder is never boring, and successfuly swings like a pendulum between quirky and adult comedy.

Sharmeila Mandre is striking with her action moves as ‘Makeup’ Mallika, a dangerous assassin who can kill people with makeup materials. Rangayana Raghu and Gopalkrishna Deshpande shine as the poles-apart drug dealers shine, with the former being hilarious with his Tamil-mixed Kannada.

Even if  Powder  doesn’t insult the idea of a comic caper with excessive ideas, it fails to be a laugh riot. The less-eventful first half feels like a lost opportunity, even if Diganth salvages it with his depiction of a naive youngster.  Powder  springs to life in the second half, and the episode showing the hunt for the talcum powder containers is a hoot. Nagabhushana, as the spoof of a popular Kannada YouTuber, delivers the knockout punch.

Director Janardhan Chikkanna and his technical teams triumph in the last 15 minutes. Expectedly, characters hallucinate, and bizarre things begin to unfold. The director’s visual style — helped by cinematographers Advaitha Gurumurthy and Shanthi Sagar H G — to present this psychedelic world is impressive. Even if the impact of the visual effects is a bit overwhelming, you are left astounded at the efforts behind it.
