We must conserve water to protect the future, as clean water is an essential component of life. If we conserve water, we can save life on Earth. To prevent pollution without mixing together, we need to decide to use it according to the requirements for water. By keeping additional slum and industrial pollutants from entering the water, water pollution will save us. All of the proper pollution prevention measures must be followed.

The only way to conserve water in the future and address the issue of water shortage is through water conservation. We must begin expanding our plant and tree populations. To profit from the rain, rainwater collection must be mandatory. We may also conserve water by turning off the tap while we wash our dishes or brush our teeth. Water is one of the most essential needs for a person to have a sustainable life. All creatures need water to progress and produce. Without it no one will exist, because our planet consists of mostly water therefore water gives us life. To have a sufficient supply of water we have to conserve. This is not an easy task especially in today’s era. Everything is commercialized and modernized to the point wherein natural conservation has been set aside. Increase in population is also one of the main reasons why water conservation becomes hard. As the number of people grows, the water becomes more polluted.

This is where water waste management comes in, it is the process of recycling water to be used again in a water system or to be disposed in an environmentally-conscious manner. The major problem in the modernized world is that every now and then infrastructures arise which makes it harder to recycle water because the sewage system becomes small. Sewage treatment is one of the major fields in water waste management. All that comes from your toilet, be it showers, baths, sinks etc. is directly generated into sewage systems. The wastewater that comes from industrial facilities is dangerous because it carries harmful pollutants that and if not handled with care, these pollutants turn into toxins that will cause illness or even death for millions of people on a global scale.

Another problem in the modern management is the small capacity of sewage system. Other cities also tend to direct the rain water into the sewage system that causes overflow in it. If the overflow happens, all the contaminants in the sewage will be spread in all parts of the city which is very harmful to the people. Sewage systems consist of pipes and pumps and have three stages of filtration. The first stage is separating solid waste from the water. Second stage is treating the water and removing microorganisms. Third stage is the process called microfiltration. In this stage the water is being treated and chemical additives are added into the water which eventually treats the liquid and transforms them into drinkable or usable water for our daily use.

Recycling water is no easy task; it takes a lot of time, effort, and investment in doing so. Wasted water will affect so many people’s lives. Dirty water is as harmful as poison when consumed by a person. We can aid in recycling water by researching on how to do simple filtration set-ups, conserve water when not in use, and properly segregate and dispose of garbage so as to not provide toxins in water.

There are two types of wastewater that we can recycle on our own. First is the black water that comes from our toilet. If you want to have your own sewage system, this black water can be regulated in a leach field. Second is the grey water, which comes from our sink. Grey water can be used in watering the plants, washing the tires of your car or even washing your garage. This type of waste water can be used in other chores but is not potable.

In doing your own waste water management at you home you can help the environment be clean. It will also lessen the work of sewage systems and it will save the world a lot of water. In order to live a happy and healthy life we should all take charge of our own cleanliness. Carlos Herrera Madigral being recognized at a World Water Day event

World Water Day essay competition winner speaks on water changes

Civil engineering student Carlos Herrera-Madrigal was recently awarded by Fresno State’s Department of Civil and Geomatics Engineering for the essay he submitted for the World Water Day essay contest.

World Water Day is an annual United Nations Observance that celebrates water and inspires action to tackle the global water crisis through communication and advocacy.

In collaboration with the Civil Engineering department, the California Water Institute hosted a community event that brought together attendees through hands-on activities, hearing from a panel of water experts, networking with engineering industry professionals, and more.

To get students more involved with World Water Day, the Civil Engineering department created an essay contest. Students were prompted to write a 500-word essay on whether the Central Valley can survive without more water. The awards were announced at the event and everyone who entered was recognized for their essay.

Herrera-Madrigal wrote his essay on the complexity of changing water habits for people of the Central Valley.

He said that change won’t be as simple as making a law and telling people to follow it. It will include so much more; asking how the farmers' crops are doing and what they’re growing, rather than telling them they only have a certain amount of water they can use as an example.

“It’s going to be a very big group effort,” said Herrera-Madrigal.

While Herrera-Madrigal will be working with water, his main goal is to work with water distribution systems. He plans on working with Provost and Pritchard, a consulting group here in the Valley, on a municipalities team this coming summer.

“I like a lot of what Provost and Pritchard does because they’ll go out to very rural communities like Poplar, Tipton, Terabella…” said Herrera-Madrigal.

He said that because those small communities do not have a main water line, and the city does not have a city engineer, Provost and Pritchard will get hired to make those water infrastructures for those communities.

Herrera-Madrigal wants to emphasize on teaching people how their water infrastructures work so they can gain knowledge about how to better utilize the water they receive.

“I also enjoy the outreach side of it,” said Herrera-Madrigal.

Herrera-Madrigal is a senior and will graduate from Fresno State in the fall of 2024.

DES and CES Faculty receive $500,000 to improve treatment of radioactive wastewater

BATON ROUGE - In March of 2011, a 15-meter tsunami damaged the power supply at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan, triggering an accident that nuclear regulators eventually rated a seven, the highest level on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale, created by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

During the crisis, workers used water to prevent the core meltdowns from progressing further, and, to this day, water is used to keep the reactors cool. While essential for safety, this process has generated more than a million tons of radioactive wastewater that must be stored and treated onsite before it can be released.

Nuclear accidents on this scale are highly unlikely. However, the storage of liquid radioactive waste and its associated hazards can create issues in many settings, and better treatment methods are needed. Yong-Ha Kim, an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences, or DES, has received a $500,000 grant from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, or NRC, to investigate two new methods for treating radioactively contaminated water.

DES Professor Ed Laws and Center for Energy Studies Professor Wei-Hsung Wang, director of Radiation Safety Office, will also work on the 3- year project, which will examine the feasibility of two novel methodologies: microalgae cultivation and capacitive deionization.

“Our ultimate goal is to better protect people and the environment from accidental radiation exposure,” Kim said. “By combining the two methods, we are developing a novel radionuclide separation system that can make radioactive water less radioactive. We are hoping that the radionuclide separation system can be used to better address safety issues of radioactive water.”

The methods the team is using take very different approaches to the treatment of the water. The first, microalgae cultivation, is a bioremediation strategy that involves using a variety of microalgae that can consume, or capture radioactive ions, such as strontium and cesium.

Capacitive deionization is a novel electrosorption process. Charged porous electrodes are used to capture radioactive ions from the solution. This method has also been used to desalinate water, implying it might work as well for treating radioactive wastewater. It also has the potential advantage of portability and scalability, as the process can be modularized.

Over the course of the grant, the team will treat radioactive water using both methods separately, and then attempt to combine them, in order to increase the treatment capacity and efficiency.

An effective process would not just be used to treat radioactive wastewater in the event of a nuclear spill or accident. It could also be used to facilitate decommissioning of nuclear facilities, in the management of liquid waste from medical facilities and research institutes, and even in treating wastewater produced by hydraulic fracking, which can become radioactive due to naturally occurring radioactive materials.

This is Kim’s second grant from the NRC. In 2022, he and Wang, along with faculty in the LSU College of Engineering and Center for Energy Studies, received $199,998 as a multidisciplinary scholarship grant to develop nuclear workforce for nuclear and nuclear-related industries.

Francis Collins: Why I’m going public with my prostate cancer diagnosis

I served medical research. now it’s serving me. and i don’t want to waste time..

Over my 40 years as a physician-scientist, I’ve had the privilege of advising many patients facing serious medical diagnoses. I’ve seen them go through the excruciating experience of waiting for the results of a critical blood test, biopsy or scan that could dramatically affect their future hopes and dreams.

But this time, I was the one lying in the PET scanner as it searched for possible evidence of spread of my aggressive prostate cancer . I spent those 30 minutes in quiet prayer. If that cancer had already spread to my lymph nodes, bones, lungs or brain, it could still be treated — but it would no longer be curable.

Why am I going public about this cancer that many men are uncomfortable talking about? Because I want to lift the veil and share lifesaving information, and I want all men to benefit from the medical research to which I’ve devoted my career and that is now guiding my care.

Five years before that fateful PET scan, my doctor had noted a slow rise in my PSA, the blood test for prostate-specific antigen. To contribute to knowledge and receive expert care, I enrolled in a clinical trial at the National Institutes of Health, the agency I led from 2009 through late 2021.

At first, there wasn’t much to worry about — targeted biopsies identified a slow-growing grade of prostate cancer that doesn’t require treatment and can be tracked via regular checkups, referred to as “active surveillance.” This initial diagnosis was not particularly surprising. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the United States, and about 40 percent of men over age 65 — I’m 73 — have low-grade prostate cancer . Many of them never know it, and very few of them develop advanced disease.

Why am I going public about this cancer that many men are uncomfortable talking about? Because I want to lift the veil and share lifesaving information.

But in my case, things took a turn about a month ago when my PSA rose sharply to 22 — normal at my age is less than 5. An MRI scan showed that the tumor had significantly enlarged and might have even breached the capsule that surrounds the prostate, posing a significant risk that the cancer cells might have spread to other parts of the body.

New biopsies taken from the mass showed transformation into a much more aggressive cancer. When I heard the diagnosis was now a 9 on a cancer-grading scale that goes only to 10, I knew that everything had changed.

Thus, that PET scan, which was ordered to determine if the cancer had spread beyond the prostate, carried high significance. Would a cure still be possible, or would it be time to get my affairs in order? A few hours later, when my doctors showed me the scan results, I felt a rush of profound relief and gratitude. There was no detectable evidence of cancer outside of the primary tumor.

Later this month, I will undergo a radical prostatectomy — a procedure that will remove my entire prostate gland. This will be part of the same NIH research protocol — I want as much information as possible to be learned from my case, to help others in the future.

While there are no guarantees, my doctors believe I have a high likelihood of being cured by the surgery.

My situation is far better than my father’s when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer four decades ago. He was about the same age that I am now, but it wasn’t possible back then to assess how advanced the cancer might be. He was treated with a hormonal therapy that might not have been necessary and had a significant negative impact on his quality of life.

Because of research supported by NIH, along with highly effective collaborations with the private sector, prostate cancer can now be treated with individualized precision and improved outcomes.

As in my case, high-resolution MRI scans can now be used to delineate the precise location of a tumor. When combined with real-time ultrasound, this allows pinpoint targeting of the prostate biopsies. My surgeon will be assisted by a sophisticated robot named for Leonardo da Vinci that employs a less invasive surgical approach than previous techniques, requiring just a few small incisions.

Advances in clinical treatments have been informed by large-scale, rigorously designed trials that have assessed the risks and benefits and were possible because of the willingness of cancer patients to enroll in such trials.

I feel compelled to tell this story openly. I hope it helps someone. I don’t want to waste time.

If my cancer recurs, the DNA analysis that has been carried out on my tumor will guide the precise choice of therapies. As a researcher who had the privilege of leading the Human Genome Project , it is truly gratifying to see how these advances in genomics have transformed the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

I want all men to have the same opportunity that I did. Prostate cancer is still the No. 2 cancer killer among men. I want the goals of the Cancer Moonshot to be met — to end cancer as we know it. Early detection really matters, and when combined with active surveillance can identify the risky cancers like mine, and leave the rest alone. The five-year relative survival rate for prostate cancer is 97 percent, according to the American Cancer Society , but it’s only 34 percent if the cancer has spread to distant areas of the body.

But lack of information and confusion about the best approach to prostate cancer screening have impeded progress. Currently, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that all men age 55 to 69 discuss PSA screening with their primary-care physician, but it recommends against starting PSA screening after age 70.

Other groups, like the American Urological Association , suggest that screening should start earlier, especially for men with a family history — like me — and for African American men, who have a higher risk of prostate cancer. But these recommendations are not consistently being followed.

Our health-care system is afflicted with health inequities. For example, the image-guided biopsies are not available everywhere and to everyone. Finally, many men are fearful of the surgical approach to prostate cancer because of the risk of incontinence and impotence, but advances in surgical techniques have made those outcomes considerably less troublesome than in the past. Similarly, the alternative therapeutic approaches of radiation and hormonal therapy have seen significant advances.

A little over a year ago, while I was praying for a dying friend, I had the experience of receiving a clear and unmistakable message. This has almost never happened to me. It was just this: “Don’t waste your time, you may not have much left.” Gulp.

Having now received a diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer and feeling grateful for all the ways I have benefited from research advances, I feel compelled to tell this story openly. I hope it helps someone. I don’t want to waste time.
