What is a philosophy of education?

It incorporates your own experiences (negative or positive) in education.

Many teachers have two versions of their teaching philosophy: a long form (a page or so of text) and a short form. What’s the best teaching philosophy?

Here’s one key thing to remember: There’s no one right answer to “What’s your teaching philosophy?” Every teacher’s will be a little bit different, depending on their own teaching style, experiences, and expectations. And many teachers find that their philosophies change over time, as they learn and grow in their careers.

When someone asks for your philosophy of education, what they really want to know is that you’ve given thought to how you prepare lessons and interact with students in and out of the classroom. They’re interested in finding out what you expect from your students and from yourself, and how you’ll apply those expectations. And they want to hear examples of how you put your teaching philosophy into action.

What’s included in strong teaching philosophy examples?

Depending on who you ask, a philosophy of education statement can include a variety of values, beliefs, and information. As you build your own teaching philosophy statement, consider these aspects, and write down your answers to the questions.

Purpose of Education (Core Beliefs)

What do you believe is the purpose of teaching and learning? Why does education matter to today’s children? How will time spent in your classroom help prepare them for the future?

Use your answers to draft the opening statement of your philosophy of education, like these:

Education isn’t just about what students learn, but about learning how to learn.
A good education prepares students to be productive and empathetic members of society.
Teachers help students embrace new information and new ways of seeing the world around them.
A strong education with a focus on fundamentals ensures students can take on any challenges that come their way.
I believe education is key to empowering today’s youth, so they’ll feel confident in their future careers, relationships, and duties as members of their community.
Well-educated students are open-minded, welcoming the opinions of others and knowing how to evaluate information critically and carefully.

Teaching Style and Practices

Do you believe in student-led learning, or do you like to use the Socratic method instead? Is your classroom a place for quiet concentration or sociable collaboration? Do you focus on play-based learning, hands-on practice, debate and discussion, problem-solving, or project-based learning? All teachers use a mix of teaching practices and styles, of course, but there are some you’re likely more comfortable with than others. Possible examples:

Every student has their own unique talents, skills, challenges, and background. By getting to know my students as individuals, I can help them find the learning styles that work best for them, now and throughout their education.
I find that motivated students learn best. They’re more engaged in the classroom and more diligent when working alone. I work to motivate students by making learning relevant, meaningful, and enjoyable.

How do I write my philosophy of education?

Think back to any essay you’ve ever written and follow a similar format. Write in the present tense; your philosophy isn’t aspirational, it’s something you already live and follow. This is true even if you’re applying for your first teaching job. Your philosophy is informed by your student teaching, internships, and other teaching experiences.

Lead with your core beliefs about teaching and learning. These beliefs should be reflected throughout the rest of your teaching philosophy statement.

Then, explain your teaching style and practices, being sure to include concrete examples of how you put those practices into action. Transition into your beliefs about students and learning styles, with more examples. Explain why you believe in these teaching and learning styles, and how you’ve seen them work in your experiences.

A long-form philosophy of education statement usually takes a few paragraphs (not generally more than a page or two). From that long-form philosophy, highlight a few key statements and phrases and use them to sum up your teaching philosophy in a couple of well-crafted sentences for your short-form teaching philosophy.

Reflective teaching is a process where teachers reflect on their own teaching practices and learn from their own experiences.

This type of reflection allows teachers to see what works well in their classrooms and what needs improvement. Reflective teaching also helps teachers to understand the impact that their teaching has on students.

Examples of reflective teaching include observing other teachers, taking notes on your own teaching practice, reading about how to improve yourself, and asking for feedback from your students to achieve self-improvement.

Reflective Teaching Examples

1. reflection-in-practice.

Reflection in practice is a concept by David Schon which involves small moments of reflection throughout your day.

Instead of pausing at the end of your activities and reflecting upon what you did, Schon argues that good practitioners reflect in the moment and make tiny changes from moment-to-moment. This is the difference between reflection on practice and reflection in practice. “Reflection on” occurs once the lesson is over. Reflection in occurs during the lesson.

For example, as you’re doing a question-and-answer session with your class, you might realize that the students are tuning out and getting bored. In order to resolve this problem, you might choose to get the students all to stand up and play heads or tails for questions you ask them. This might get the kinesthetic learners re-engaged in the lesson and salvage it from its impending implosion.

2. Conducting Classroom Observations

Another way to do reflective teaching is to start a classroom observation routine. Create a template for your observations (e.g. listing each student’s name down the side, with notes beside it) and take notes on students’ work.

You could, for example, choose to observe how well students responded to a new classroom intervention. These written observations can form the basis for changes that you can make to your work as you progress.

Similarly, you could make observations about students’ interactions after changing the classroom layout. This can help you edit and refine your chosen layout in order to maximize student learning and figure out the best location for each student.

3. Pivoting based on Formative Feedback

Reflective teachers also try to obtain formative feedback from students in order to gather data that can form the basis of their reflection.

An example of formative feedback is a pre-test a month before the exams.

This pre-test can help the teacher understand the general areas of weakness for their students, and acts as the basis for a pivot in their teaching practices. The teacher may, for example, identify a specific math challenge that the majority of the students had trouble with. They can then put extra focus on that challenge for the next few weeks so the students can ace that challenge in the end-of-term test.

In this way, formative feedback is a core tool for teachers in their formative feedback toolkit.

4. Keeping a Teaching Diary

A personal teaching diary can help teachers to identify trends in their behaviors (and the behaviors of their students) that can help teachers to improve.

For example, in my teaching diary, I will often take notes about how I reacted to certain events. I’ll note my reaction as well as things I did well, ways I effectively self-regulated , and things I did poorly. If I’m taking notes on an answer to a student’s question, I might note that something I did well was “give a clear answer” but an area for improvement might be “I failed to follow-up later in the day to check my student’s comprehension”.

Incidentally, teaching diaries can be extremely useful for self-performance reviews . Bring your teaching diary into the performance review and go over it with your line manager. They will be super impressed with your reflective practice!

5. Receiving Student Evaluations

Despite how much we may despise student evaluations, they can contain important tidbits of information for us.

I often like to compare my evaluations from one to the next to see if there are changes in the student trend. I’ll also work really hard on one aspect of my teaching and see if I can get students to take notice and leave a comment in the evaluation.

For example, one semester, I decided to implement a tech intervention (I let students use an educational app in class). The students used the app, and it turns out – they didn’t like it!

Without the student evaluation, I wouldn’t have been able to identify this problem and work on solving it. You can read all about that study here, which I published in an academic journal.

6. Debriefing with a Mentor

Having a mentor has been invaluable for me in my career. By sitting down with a mentor, I learn a lot about my strengths and weaknesses.

Mentors tend to bring out reflectiveness in all of us. After all, they’re teachers who want us to improve ourselves.

Your mentor may ask you open-ended questions to get you to reflect, or discuss some new points and concepts that you haven’t thought about before. In this process, you’re being prompted to reflect on your on teaching practice and compare what you do to the new ideas that have been presented. You may ask yourself questions like “do I do that?” or “do I need to improve in that area?”

7. Using Self-Reflection Worksheets

Self-reflection worksheets are a good ‘cheat’ for figuring out how to do self-reflection for people who struggle.

You can find these worksheets online through services like Teachers Pay Teachers. They often involve daily activities like:

Write down one thing you struggled with today.
Write down one big win.
Write down one thing you will actively try to work on tomorrow.

These worksheets are simple prompts (that don’t need to take up too much time!) that help you to bring to the front of your consciousness all those thoughts that have been brewing in your mind, so you can think about ways to act upon them tomorrow.

8. Changing Lesson Plans Based on Previous Experiences

At the end of each unit of work, teachers need to look at their lesson plans and self-assess what changes are required.

Everyone is aware of that teacher who’s had the same lesson plan since 2015. They seem lazy for failing to modernize and innovate in their practice.

By contrast, the reflective practitioner spends a moment at the end of the lesson or unit and thinks about what changes might need to be made for next time the lesson is taught.

They might make changes if the information or knowledge about the topic changes (especially important in classes that engage with current events!). Similarly, you might make changes if you feel that there was a particular point in the lesson where there was a lull and you lost the students’ attention.

9. Professional Development Days

Professional development days are a perfect opportunity for reflective teaching.

In fact, the leader of the professional development day is likely to bake reflectiveness into the event. They may prepare speeches or provide activities specifically designed for teachers to take a step back and reflect.

For example, I remember several moments in my career where we had a guest speaker attend our PD day and gave an inspiring speech about the importance of teachers for student development. These events made me think about what I was doing and the “bigger picture” and made me redouble my efforts to be an excellent teacher.

10. Implementing 2-Minute Feedback

The 2-minute feedback concept is excellent for reflective practice. For this method, you simply spend the last 2 minutes of the class trying to get feedback from your students.

One of the easiest ways to do this is to give students a post-it note at the end of the lesson. Have them write on one side something they liked about the lesson and on the other something they didn’t like. Then, you can read the feedback to reflect on how to improve.

With younger students, you can do ‘hands up’ for students and ask them how confident they are with the topic.

For online lessons, I’ve put a thermometer up on the screen and asked students to draw on the thermometer how confident that are (line at the top means very confident, line at the bottom means not confident at all).

11. Reading Books

Books are excellent for helping us to reflect and contemplate. There is a wide range of books for teachers, from philosophical ones like Pedagogy of the Oppressed to very practical workbooks.

Through reading, we encounter new ideas that challenge our current ideas. As we pick up new ideas and information, we interrogate our current thoughts and find ways to assimilate them into our new thinking. Sometimes, that requires us to change our own current opinions or thoughts, and challenge us to consistently improve.

In this way, reading books about teaching is an inherently reflective practice. It makes us better practitioners and more thoughtful people.

12. Listening to Podcasts

Like books, podcasts enable us to consume information that can help us pause and reflect.

I personally love podcasts because I find them easier to consume than books. The conversations and dialogue in podcasts help me to feel immersed in a conversation with close friends. Good podcasts hosts make you feel like they’re grappling with the exact same concerns and emotions as you are – and it’s a motivating experience.

Good podcasts for teachers include The Cult of Pedagogy and Teachers on Fire. These podcasts help me to reflect on my own teaching practice and continue to learn new things that I can compare to my own approaches and integrate when I feel they offer new insights that are valuable.

There are many ways to incorporate reflective practice into your teaching. By taking the time to reflect on your teaching, you can identify areas where you can improve and make changes to your practice. This will help you to become a more effective teacher and better meet the needs of your students. Through reflective practice, you can also develop a stronger sense of who you are as a teacher and what your personal teaching philosophy is.

We all have those times when we want our notes to stand out. Sometimes they don’t, and it’s due to laziness; sometimes, it’s a result of us not staying on top of the most recent trends and buzzwords.

Regardless of your situation, there’s no reason why you should continue to settle for mediocre results. Whether you’re a student who wants to get a good grade or a teacher who wants to make sure they’re teaching students something worthwhile, study notes don’t have to be boring.

To maximize the impact and effectiveness of teacher notes to students, here are 10 valuable tips that will revolutionize your note-taking game.

1. Use simple writing

The secret to good writing is simple: say what you want to communicate clearly and directly. I spend a lot of time writing notes to students as well as our dear teachers, and it’s always tempting to try to sound “professorial.”

But if I want them to understand what I’m saying, the best policy is just to write the way I usually do. To be more precise, I try to use shorter sentences than usual and shorter words than usual in my notes. That doesn’t mean I try to avoid complicated material. On the contrary, I often want to write about things that are difficult and require complex explanations. But the more complex something is, the more critical it is to write simply about it. Next time you write a note to a student, try to express yourself in the most straightforward possible language. Don’t worry that this will make you sound dumb or leave you looking stupid if anyone else reads it. If someone else does read it, they’ll probably be pleased to see how clearly you’re able to explain things and how much care you take with your students. The most straightforward possible sentence is often not very simple. It may take a few tries to get it right:

“I think I have most of the logic right, but there is one small detail I’m getting wrong.”

“I think I’ve got most of the logic right, except one small detail.”

“I’ve got most of the logic right.”

“I’ve got it!”

But it’s worth the effort. If you can use more straightforward language, why wouldn’t you?

2. Focus on simplicity

Simple Note-Making is Better. Most teachers often make the mistake of making their notes more complicated than necessary. They feel that to prove their value and expertise, they must over-complicate things. This is the wrong approach. Students do not need teachers to tell them how smart they are or how much the teacher knows about a topic. Too much information can be confusing and overwhelming for students.

Instead, it is better to simplify things and focus on only sharing basic information that students need to know. A common example of a teacher over-complicating things is creating long lists of vocabulary words without any context or explanation as to why they are important or how they relate to the lesson. Students do not want to memorize these lists of words without understanding their meaning or why they are essential. Instead, it is better for teachers to choose the most important vocabulary words and show how they are used in sentences or phrases so that students can see the context and understand their meaning.

3. Limit the use of distracting colours

The colour red is a great choice for the colour of notes. Red is clear and sharp, easy to read in poor light. Red looks good on paper too. But it’s also a very distracting colour if you’re trying to make notes to students. It can make it hard to find your place. And it’s a bad choice for comprehension: even when combined with grey, red makes it harder to read than white does. The colour red has long been thought to make it harder to read. This has been confirmed in several studies - one in the UK and one in the US.

In my experience, students will understand best what you are writing about if your notes are black-and-white. White pages don’t show the distracting colours as well, but the difference is slight and not really noticeable. If you’re going to use colours to make notes to students, don’t use a really dark background. Your notes will be less easy to read than if you used a lighter background if you do. And if you can’t avoid using a dark background, make sure that your notes are easy to spot on the page.

4. Divide the content into smaller chunks

When we read a book, we divide it into pages. When we watch a movie, we divide it into minutes. When we use software, we divide it into screens.

But when we talk, we tend to do the opposite of chunking. We run lots of ideas together in one long stream, which makes what we are saying hard to follow. To make teacher notes to students clearer, you have to fight this tendency when you write. The way to do that is by putting in extra dividers. When you read the following paragraph, can you tell where the sentences begin and end? It’s not just individual ideas that need to be chunked. It would be best if you also chunked related ideas together. For example, here are two paragraphs that say roughly the same thing:

Paragraph 1: I try to avoid looking at my own reflection in shop windows because I don’t like my nose, I don’t like my ears, and I don’t like my forehead or eyebrows anymore either because they’ve all got wrinkles on them now and they never used to have.

Paragraph 2: I hate looking at myself in shop windows because I can see all the changes that time has made: there are wrinkles on my forehead and around my eyes; my ears stick out, and my nose has got a few unsightly bumps.

You can see that paragraph 1 doesn’t really have any chunks. There’s no prominent place to divide it into smaller sections (unless you chunk every sentence separately). But in paragraph 2, there are three different ideas: wrinkled forehead, protruding ears, and bumpy nose. The first paragraph is the sort of thing a student might write. It’s not chunked into ideas at all. The second is chunked: it contains one idea in the first sentence and three more pictures in each of the following sentences. The number of words is about the same, but the effect on the reader is very different: paragraph 1 is a bit overwhelming, while paragraph 2 gives you time to think about each part before moving on to the next.

5. Do not use too long sentences

Long sentences are not always wrong: sometimes, they are the best way of saying something. This means that students have to read each sentence several times before they can understand it. It makes their work very hard, and they will quickly get bored. But when you are writing notes for beginners, you must usually use short sentences with only one piece of information in each sentence.

Here is my advice on how to write good notes for beginners:

Use short sentences with no more than one idea in each sentence.
Use examples that illustrate the point you want to make, and explain why these examples are important.
Check your work by reading it aloud and asking someone else to read it.

6. Teach students to write better notes

One of the most important things you can do for your students is to teach them to take better notes. Of course, this is easier said than done. Your students may be overwhelmed by the amount of information coming at them, and they may be struggling just to keep up with the pace of lectures and classes. But there are some simple strategies that can help your students take better notes and help them retain more of what they learn in class.

Teach your students to write in bullets and lists rather than prose.
Teach them to use symbols instead of writing out words and phrases.
Remind them to leave gaps between ideas or between different parts of an idea so that they can fill them in later.
Please encourage them to use colour-coding or other visual markers to make it easier for them to find things later on as needed during review sessions before exams etc... It’s also a good idea, if possible, during lectures/presentations, if you’ll allow it; to encourage your students not only to take pictures but also to record audio so that way when they go back over their notes again after class ends, they will be able to hear what you were saying at that particular point which can help reinforce ideas further (especially if they tend towards being more auditory learners).

7. Provide accessible study notes without the need to attend class

First of all, students have a lot of activities to do during the day. They can go to school, work or join in club activities.

Therefore, the only way for them to acquire knowledge is through study notes. In addition, there are many means of accessing study notes, such as e-learning websites. Students can use laptops or smartphones to find out more information about a topic and learn it in their own free time. Therefore, teachers should provide them with accessible study notes so that they do not need to attend class and spend time travelling from home to school. Furthermore, accessible study notes enable students to revise lessons whenever they want and wherever they are.

For example, if you want to review a lesson about science in your bedroom but you cannot remember some key points of the class, you can quickly get access to your notes on your laptop and revise them more carefully at home before going back to school the next day. Therefore, providing accessible teacher notes to students is an excellent way for students to revise lessons, allowing them not to attend class and travel far from home anymore.

8. Encourage students to collaborate on note-taking

This is a fun and easy way to increase students’ knowledge. It’s how students get familiar with the concepts of the course in the first place. Why do we still aim for students to take notes on their own when they are working in groups? I think it’s because most students don’t want to work in groups, given the way we’re taught and our competitive culture. They want to be on their own: it’s easier for them to do their own thinking if they aren’t distracted by their group; they can concentrate all their attention on one another and compete instead of having to listen to each other.

But if you’ve done collaborative note-taking, you will probably have noticed that it doesn’t feel that way even if the group is large. There can be a lot of concentration and a lot of effort at listening going on. And students often feel that they really learn from collaborating with others. In the long run, it will pay you to encourage your students to learn how to work together on class notes. This is a perfectly safe and easy thing for them to do. But it is almost never done because teachers are afraid that it will undermine their own teaching authority. They want their students to be obedient.

That’s not fair, as I said before. Students don’t need obedience. They all know they can’t produce perfect notes every day, and no one cares what they do when they’re not in class. To get along with each other, they can help each other out when the work gets tricky, but only with gentle guidance from teachers who are happy for them to collaborate on their own notes. Teachers can set up collaboration software at home. It’s accessible and much easier than trying to organise an entire class around it.

9. Use diagrams and mind maps

If you really want to understand an idea, try explaining it. That forces you to sort it out in your mind. I’ve often had the experience of explaining something to a colleague and halfway through realising that I didn’t understand it after all. This is why teachers should use diagrams and mind maps when making notes to students. Diagrams and mind maps force you to think about relationships between ideas rather than just reproducing them.

In fact, they can be helpful for anyone looking to record information in a more memorable way. For example, if you are studying science, drawing diagrams of molecules or chemical reactions can help you remember these things much better than simply reading them off a page.

10. Design notes as a summary of a lecture/reading material with examples

Teachers should design their notes as a summary of the lectures. The problem is that students are not able to learn from the reading material. But instead, they learn only from the lecture. Therefore, teachers should design the notes as an additional learning tool . Imagine if a student could read the textbook for the class and then take away the main points or essential information from that textbook. The teacher does not need to spend as much time lecturing because students will be able to read and understand the concepts on their own.

Some students who are better at reading than listening would be able to learn on their own. The goal of most classes is to have students learn concepts so they can apply them in real-life situations. Lecturing sometimes can be boring, but reading can be even more tedious if it isn’t interesting enough. If teachers spend more time preparing the notes, it will allow students to focus more on learning concepts instead of writing down every word and phrase mentioned in class. As a result, students will be able to retain more knowledge and learn more efficiently.

If you’re a teacher or planning on becoming one in the future, regular study notes should be a vital part of your everyday work. With that said, there are lots of different ways to customise and tailor your notes to help meet the needs of both your students and yourself.
