How to Organize & Run a Sports Tournament in 2024

Organizing sporting tournaments requires a combination of strategic planning and effective execution. The key to success lies in having a well-thought-out vision and applying the best practices in sports event management .

According to Statista , the revenue of sports event tickets in the United States sits at around 15.4 billion dollars. This may make sporting event production seem like a difficult task at first, but having the right tools and knowledge makes all the difference in creating a smooth and memorable experience for fans, attendees, parents and athletes.

This guide will walk you through the essential steps of how to run a sports tournament. From initial planning, like selecting the type of tournament and venue, to implementing effective participant management and ensuring a memorable event day.

Each phase is important, so we’ll provide insights and practical advice to navigate them effectively, ensuring your sports tournament not only runs smoothly but also leaves a lasting impression on its participants and spectators.

Now, let’s start by setting you up for success.

How do you plan a sporting event?

Planning a sporting event begins with defining its purpose and objectives. You’ll need a clear understanding of the type of sport, the format of the competition and the target audience. Additionally, it’s key to understand the scope of the event, whether it's a local community game, a school tournament or a professional-level championship.

Once you have your vision, your initial steps include selecting a suitable date, determining the budget and establishing the size and scale of the event.

The next stage involves logistical planning, which covers venue selection, securing permits, arranging equipment and facilities and ensuring compliance with safety standards. This means managing participant registrations, scheduling games or matches and organizing staff and volunteers.

Effective communication is key throughout the planning process. Event management tools like EventPipe can save a massive amount of time and headaches by streamlining your tournament housing management.

EventPipe can handle housing accommodation management , streamline your RFP process and simplify booking for attendees.

How to organize & run a sports tournament

Organizing and running a sports tournament has many moving parts that require careful planning and execution. Let's break down the key steps:

1. Choose your sports tournament type

business plan for sports tournament

Selecting the right tournament format will shape the entire event. When deciding on the format, consider factors such as the skill level of teams, the intended competitive atmosphere and the overall duration of the tournament.

The chosen format should cater to your audience's expectations and enhance their experience, while also being logistically feasible. The tournament type influences everything from game scheduling to prize distribution and should align with your event's overarching goals. Here are the most common tournament formats :

  • Single-Elimination Tournaments: Ideal for a large number of teams, where each game's loser is immediately eliminated. Best for short-duration events.
  • Round-Robin Tournaments: Every team plays against every other team. Suitable for ensuring more playtime for each team, emphasizing participation over competition.
  • Double Elimination: Combines elements of both round-robin and single-elimination, offering a balance between fair play and competitive intensity.
  • League Style: Teams accumulate points over a series of games, typically followed by playoffs. Great for longer tournaments with a focus on consistent performance.
  • Knockout Tournaments: Similar to single-elimination but with a focus on progressing to the next round after each win.
  • Hybrid Formats: Mixes various elements from different formats to suit specific tournament needs and preferences.

2. Organize sports tournament supplies

business plan for sports tournament

A well-organized sports tournament requires a comprehensive list of supplies . This includes not only sports-specific equipment but also general supplies for staff. Anticipate and meet the needs of everyone at the event – teams, officials, volunteers and spectators – to ensure a smooth and enjoyable tournament experience.

Your checklist should include the following:

  • Sports Equipment: Ensure availability of quality, sport-specific gear like balls, nets and protective equipment.
  • Operational Tools: Walkie-talkies and other communication devices for coordinating staff and volunteers.
  • Medical Supplies: Stock first aid kits and have medical professionals on standby for emergencies.
  • Hydration and Nutrition: Set up hydration stations and consider offering snacks or meals, especially for all-day events.
  • Signage and Information: Clear signs for directions, schedules and other essential information.
  • Seating and Shelter: Adequate seating for spectators and shelters or tents for outdoor events to protect against weather.
  • Safety Gear: Depending on the sport, ensure the availability of helmets, pads or other safety equipment.
  • Scorekeeping Tools: Scoreboards, timers and other necessary equipment to keep track of game progress.

Preparation should also include contingency plans for equipment failure. Anticipate the needs of your teams, officials and spectators to ensure a smooth experience.

3. Get sports event insurance coverage

business plan for sports tournament

Insurance coverage is critical to protect against unforeseen incidents. General liability insurance should cover injuries and property damage, while additional coverage may be needed for specific risks associated with your sport or event location.

Work with an insurance provider who understands sports events and can tailor coverage to your needs, including participant liability and equipment insurance.

It's important to ensure that your insurance covers the entire duration of the event, from setup to breakdown and includes provisions for event cancellation due to unexpected factors like adverse weather.

This comprehensive approach to insurance not only protects you legally and financially but also adds a layer of trust and professionalism to your event.

4. Prioritize event housing management

For multi-day tournaments, proper event housing management will factor into your attendees' overall experience and future participation. Consider locking in room block rates to make your investment better spent.

Efficient housing management not only ensures comfort for participants but can also be a deciding factor in the event's success. When selecting accommodations, consider proximity to the venue, the comfort level of the hotels and the amenities they offer.

This is where EventPipe’s platform can provide a tremendous amount of value! With Eventpipe, users can unlock easy access to:

5. Implement health & safety initiatives

Establish protocols for emergency medical services, including on-site medical staff and clear procedures for handling injuries. Implement safety checks for all equipment and facilities. Consider environmental factors, like heat or cold and plan accordingly with hydration stations or warming areas.

Communicate safety procedures to all participants and staff and have a clear plan for emergencies. Regular training sessions for staff on safety protocols can also be beneficial.

6. Find staff & sponsors

Securing skilled staff and finding sponsors are key to making attendees, participants and families feel safe and engaged. Staff roles might include referees, logistical support and event coordinators.

Approach potential sponsors with a clear value proposition, showcasing the visibility and reach of your event.

Pro tips:

  • Offer sponsors meaningful ways to engage with your audience, such as branding opportunities or interactive booths.
  • Build a strong team and cultivate relationships with sponsors for not only a successful event but for future events as well.  Do not underestimate the power of great relationships.

7. Market your sports tournament

business plan for sports tournament

Develop a fun and engaging marketing strategy to promote your event. Use a mix of digital marketing, social media engagement and traditional marketing methods. Tailor your marketing efforts to reach your target audience effectively.

For example, If you’re promoting a hockey tournament , you may have a better turnout by reaching out to hockey-centric entities, rather than general sports entities alone. Highlight the unique aspects of your tournament and leverage engaging content to build excitement.

Collaborate with local sports clubs, schools and communities to broaden your reach.

8. Host your sports tournament

When the day of your sports tournament arrives, it's important to make sure everything runs according to plan. This stage will run smoother with effective management and coordination. Start by confirming that the venue is set up correctly, with all necessary equipment in place and ready for use. Ensure that all teams and participants are aware of their schedules, locations and any last-minute changes.

Keep a close eye on the event's timeline. Delays in one game or match can have a ripple effect on the entire schedule, so it's essential to keep things moving smoothly. Have a team in place to quickly address any issues that arise, whether they're related to the facility, equipment or participants.

Engage actively with staff, volunteers and officials to maintain a clear line of communication throughout the event. Their support is integral to the tournament's success, so ensure they have all the resources and information they need.

Finally, focus on creating a positive experience for everyone involved – from players and coaches to spectators. This includes adequate hydration and medical support for participants and maintaining a friendly, welcoming atmosphere for attendees.

9. Determine the profitability of your sports event

To accurately determine the profitability of your sports event, start by compiling all revenue streams such as ticket sales, housing revenue (rebates and commissions), sponsorships, merchandise and any additional services offered during the event. Then, tally up all the expenses that went into producing your event, including venue rental, equipment, marketing, personnel and other operational costs.  Take the difference between the total cost and total revenue to determine your final profitability number.

If this sounds complicated, don’t worry!  Modern sports team management tools like EventPipe offer in-depth analytics to make this part a breeze.

These venues should be chosen with the size of your audience and participants in mind, ensuring they are near public transportation for easy access.

Engagement with the local community is important, so be sure to promote your event through various local channels, such as media, schools and sports clubs. Partnering with local businesses as sponsors can provide essential support and foster a sense of community involvement.

Sports Event Business Plan [Sample Template]

Home » Business Plans » Sports Sector

Do you want to start a sports event company and need to write a plan? If YES, here is a sample sports event business plan template & FREE feasibility report.

Starting up any business can be brutal in this socioeconomic climate and to be successful you have to accept the reality of hard work, long days (and nights), and a whole lot of networking. In this business, experience in the sports industry can be extremely useful, though it is not essential.

During your career you will have gained some transferrable skills that you can apply to your event planning career.  Remember to leverage your own personal experience when deciding what type of events you are going to specialize in. For example, if your background is corporate, then this is a great place to start, rather that organizing sporting events.

Also, in this industry, it is never about what you know but who you know. Although what you know is important, sometimes who you know carries a lot of weight too, and in the world of event planning knowing the right people is a priceless key.

Knowing your audience and your competition is crucial to finding your niche and in deciding how and where to promote your services. Once you have determined your target market and completed your competitor research, it is important that you think about what type of services you are going to offer your clients.

Are you going to offer full event planning services including event registration, venue hire, catering services, event promotion, etc or are you going to specialize in one or two areas?

It is critical that you consider the costs involved. The administrative costs and time constraints of paper based event registration for example can be a burden on a start-up as can event marketing and promotion which require special expertise.

6. SWOT Analysis

London boasts of a diverse array of athletics stretching from football to tennis which have put the city in the spotlight. London’s most popular sport is football and it has five clubs in the English Premier League as of the 2019–20 seasons:

Arsenal, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur, and West Ham United. Apart from providing an excellent value to our customers, we are determined to establish an unmatched event hosting platform that will add to the enjoyment of every sports lover in London.

We also understand that we cannot do all these if we know nothing about our industry and our chances of survival. To find out these facts, we hired the services of well known professional in the area of business consulting and promotion with solid experience in the sports sector to help us in establishing a standard and competitive sport event management business.

They had to work with the management of our company in conducting our SWOT analysis. Outlined below is a summary from the result of the SWOT analysis that was conducted for us at Sunshine Sport Events.

We at SSE must establish our company as a distinguished name in London Sports Arena and creatively market our services to each of our market segments. Our SWOT analysis noted that by establishing an impeccable “exciting” atmosphere in our events through the use of first class equipment and targeting marketing strategies, elegant and comfortable process, colours and decoration, clients will frequently want our services and recommend it to others.

It also stated that by providing our clients with skilled and qualified staff to work with, they will feel comfortable and confident that we at Sunshine Sport Events can meet all of their sport event needs.

According to our SWOT Analysis, it might take some time for our sport event management to break into the London market and gain acceptance via reputation in the already saturated sport industry. This it is believed is our major weakness at Sunshine Sport Events.

  • Opportunities

Our SWOT Analysis at Sunshine Sport Events noted that some of the threats we will be facing as a sport event management company will include unfavourable government policies that might affect the event planning documentation and system, the appearance of a competitor within our location of operation and global economic downturn which usually affects spending/purchasing power. We have made plans to curtail all possible challenges and threats.

7. MARKET ANALYSIS

  • Market Trend

Sports events across the globe are undergoing transformations in the way they are organised, managed, broadcasted and consumed by audiences. These changes are heavily influenced by technology, which is affecting many functions, including ticketing, security, sustainability, workforce training and fan engagement.

The number one issue confronting organisers of major sports event is security. With threats to events becoming ever more sophisticated, experts expect organisers to step up their global collaboration and sharing of knowledge to combat these dangers.

New technology will include location-based social media monitoring for keywords, which will help security staff identify threats before they happen, via real-time alerts. Another measure to boost event security is anti-drone technology, which is being introduced to combat the threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles.

Sustainability is also becoming a huge issue around major sports events, especially after strong criticism of the damaging environmental legacy left by the Olympic Games in Rio years back. The IOC’s Agenda 2022 reforms have sought to address the problem by stating that sustainability be integrated into all aspects of planning for Games.

Tokyo 2022 organisers have responded with a blueprint which sets out water, greenery and biodiversity-related targets to mitigate the impacts on water, atmospheric environment, soil and the ecosystem. Strategic placing of water and greenery will combat the damaging effects of the Urban Heat Island phenomenon (UHI), which sees higher temperatures in densely-packed cities.

Admittedly, a seat isn’t enough for millennial spectators; they now hanker for a mix of physical and digital experiences when attending live sport events.

So in coming years more and more stadia will be supplying fast and reliable Wi-Fi that meets that demand, while club apps will give fans information on free parking spaces, traffic, finding their seat and, most excitingly, show instant high-definition replays from multiple angles on their mobile phone screens.

Also, Mobile POS (Point of Service) systems will enable fans to buy food, drink or merchandise online and have it brought to them wherever they are in the stadium, eliminating queues and increasing sales. Volunteers are also an important resource at major sports events and their recruitment is set to move on to the next level following a Sport England study entitled ‘Motivations for Sport Volunteers in England’.

This revealed that the sense of euphoria, camaraderie and once-in-a-lifetime ‘buzz’ generated by volunteering at events is the most attractive element, as it often leads to repeat volunteering. London’s Speed Volunteering app is removing the traditional barriers to volunteering by matching willing workers with appropriate events and charities.

This type of volunteer skill-matching portal points the way forward for planners and recruiters at sports events of the future. Technology is set to play a key role in event ticketing as well, with organisers looking to technological advances to keep one step ahead of counterfeiters and touts.

The rise of smartphone usage and mobile ticketing in the transport industry is leading to sport adopting digital ticketing, since it enables fans to buy tickets through apps (as well as food, drink and merchandise in stadiums).

8. Our Target Market

Our target markets are sports teams, sports agencies, middle to upper-middle class families, couples, individuals, or other private and public organizations. We chose these groups because they are most able to afford event planners, host a sport event as a branding strategy, and have the least amount of time to spare for event planning in general.

Families demand attention, employees are overburdened, and overwhelming detail needed to plan large events are too large a constraint to place on people not versed in the area of event planning. The fast pace of the world we live in leaves little time for extra things we would like to do, like plan events, outings , and social get-togethers.

We at Sunshine Sport Events plan to only make ourselves available to take on the burden of planning sports related events so that people can spend time on more crucial things, like family and friends. The demand for this service can only increase considering the growing interest in sports, the rise in incomes, population, and need for interpersonal relations in the workplace.

Our Competitive Advantage

Being a sport event management company in London, we at Sunshine Sport Events believe our company has a very large potential market. Due to the uniqueness of our services throughout London, we strongly believe we can become the main sport event planner quickly.

We plan to accomplish this actively and continuously promote our company and events through media as well as hosting and supporting various community events. We also believe our competitive advantage at Sunshine Sport Events is in three segments. First, our company is the only sport event management that offers our kind of planning services that will be available for our clients in the city.

The second segment of our competitive advantage is our business location, size, and appearance of the facility that will attract many people. We at Sunshine Sport Events strongly believe that by maintaining our focus in our strategy, marketing, program development and fulfilment, our event company will be known as the top sport planners in London.

9. SALES AND MARKETING STRATEGY

  • Sources of Income

Sunshine Sport Events is a company developed with the aim of generating substantial incomes from planning, organising and putting together sport events and we plan to do these by leveraging all available opportunities in the industry and within the proximity of the law in the United Kingdom.

We plan to sustain our business and make profits by charging a fee for each service we provide. We will strive to sustain relationship with organizations that require our services regularly to ensure a steady flow of income.

10. Sales Forecast

At Sunshine Sport Events, we assume that by the end of our first year, we must have planned at least 6 sport events that require our wide array of services. We also expect an enviable growth rate for several years, and up to 32 steady clientele bases. That will be the maximum number of clients that can be accommodated by this company. Further expansion of workforce and capacity shall be considered in future. We project that we will be able to generate sufficient capital from operation to meet our initial needs. However, our projections are based upon present real market conditions and data. Should revenue generated not meet projections, adjustments will be made in ordering and long-term commitments decreased or postponed. Below is our sales forecast at Sunshine Sport Events;

  • First Year: $345,000
  • Second Year: $1,193,990
  • Third Year: $2,310,034
  • Marketing Strategy and Sales Strategy

Sunshine Sport Events will be a Limited Liability Corporation financed by direct owner investment. Alfred Simpson and Desmond Curtis will own 50% of the company each. Through careful planning on the part of the founders, the start up costs for Sunshine Sport Events is minimal.

The start-up cost and investment funds will be assets saved from prior earnings by the owners who did event planning on a part-time basis before establishing themselves as a business. Both founders own homes and have a perfect credit rating.

What is an Indoor Sports Complex Business Plan?

A business plan provides a snapshot of your indoor sports complex business as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategies for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

Why You Need a Business Plan for an Indoor Sports Complex

If you’re looking to start an indoor sports complex business or grow your existing indoor sports complex company, you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your indoor sports complex business to improve your chances of success. Your indoor sports facility business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Sources of Funding for Indoor Sports Complex Businesses

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for an indoor sports complex business are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans, and angel investors. When it comes to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan (hand it to them in person or email to them as a PDF file) and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to ensure that your financials are reasonable, but they will also want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business. Personal savings and bank loans are the most common funding paths for indoor sports complex companies.

How to write a business plan for an indoor sports complex business.

If you want to start an indoor sports complex business or expand your current one, you need a business plan. The guide and sample below detail the necessary information for how to write each essential component of your indoor sports complex business plan.

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your executive summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the kind of indoor sports complex business you are running and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have an indoor sports complex business that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of indoor sports complex businesses?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan.

  • Give a brief overv iew of the indoor sports complex industry.
  • Discuss the type of indoor sports complex business you are operating.
  • Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers.
  • Provide a snapshot of your marketing strategy. Identify the key members of your team.
  • Offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Overview

In your company overview, you will detail the type of indoor sports complex business you are operating.

For example, you m ight specialize in one of the following types of indoor sports complex businesses:

  • Indoor sport courts: In this type of indoor sports complex, a variety of specific courts are offered for game play or practice; including basketball, racquetball, handball, and volleyball.
  • Indoor field arenas: Including soccer, baseball, a running track and other field-sized options, an indoor arena offers a wide variety of sporting-options for field play.
  • Indoor pool and water play parks: This type of indoor sports complex provides a comprehensive water-play experience for families. In addition to lap pools and dive pools, kiddie pools and splash pads are set up for children of all ages.
  • Indoor gymnastics complex: An indoor sports complex equipped for gymnastics will include training and equipment; such as the pommel horse, tumbling mats, rings, parallel bars, ceiling swings, high-low bars, and a variety of other elements to build and strengthen gymnastic skills.

In addition to explaining the type of indoor sports complex business you will operate, the company overview needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to questions such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of soccer leagues under contract, the national certification of swimming teams, the  X number of gymnastics clients served, etc.
  • Your legal indoor sports complex business structure. Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry or market analysis, you need to provide an overview of the indoor sports complex industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the indoor sports complex industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your marketing strategy, particularly if your analysis identifies market trends.

The third reason is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your sports facility business plan:

  • How big is the indoor sports complex industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential target market for your indoor sports complex business? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your indoor sports complex business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments:

  • Individuals who want to improve personal strength or aptitude in a sport
  • Parents who seek training for their children in a sport or individual skill
  • Families who want to enjoy physical exercise and play time together
  • Teams who are looking for a stable indoor environment in which to regularly play
  • Corporations who are seeking an indoor team-building atmosphere

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of indoor sport complex business you operate. Clearly, individuals would respond to different marketing promotions than corporations, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, including a discussion of the ages, genders, locations, and income levels of the potential customers you seek to serve.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can recognize and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers. Ideally you can speak with a sample of your target customers before writing your plan to better understand their needs.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are othe r indoor sports complex businesses.

Indirect competitors are options that customers may choose instead of your direct competitors. For example, families may choose to use a public pool or park, sports teams may opt for outdoor sports fields, or individuals may choose to build physical skills using equipment at home. You need to mention such competition, as well.

For each direct competitor, provide an overview of their business and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What type of indoor sports complex business do they operate?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at or known for?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide options for sports professionals who need superior service?
  • Will you offer services, such as sports training that your competition doesn’t?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer customized amenities or services in the changing rooms?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For an sports facility business plan, your marketing strategy should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type o f indoor sports complex company that you documented in your company overview. Then, detail the specific products or services you will be offering. For example, will you provide instructor-led classes for children to learn how to play basketball, racquetball, handball and volleyball in your indoor courts?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of yo ur plan, yo u are presenting the services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the site of your indoor sports complex company. Document where your company is situated and mention how the site will impact your success. For example, is your indoor sports complex business located in a busy urban district, a new residential area, or in a corporate business park ? Discuss how your site might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your indoor sports complex marketing plan is where you will document how you will drive potential customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertising in local papers, radio stations and/or magazines
  • Reaching out to local websites
  • Distributing flyers
  • Engaging in email marketing
  • Advertising on social media platforms
  • Improving the SEO (search engine optimization) on your website for targeted keywords

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your indoor sports complex business, including maintaining customer relationships, providing well-cleaned and maintained sports areas and equipment, and invoicing and servicing of customer accounts.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to book your Xth soccer league, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your indoor sports complex business to a new city.

Management Team

To demonstrate your indoor sports complex business’ potential to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally, you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing indoor sports complex businesses. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act as mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in owning or managing an indoor sports complex business or successfully running a gymnastics center or public sports park.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance s heet, and cash flow statements.

Income Statement

An income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenue and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you see 50 sports players per day? Or, will you have more than 20 teams on contract for league play each season? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets

Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your indoor sports complex business, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a lender writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement

Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and ensure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

When creating your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing an indoor sports complex business:

  • Cost of sport court lighting, set up, build-out and equipment
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Other start-up expenses (if you’re a new business) like legal expenses, permits, computer software, and furnishings

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your 10-year building lease agreement or a list of early-adopter customers who’ve paid in advance for a 5-year membership.

Writing a business plan for your indoor sports complex business is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will truly be an expert. You will understand the indoor sports complex industry, your competition, and your customers. You will develop a marketing strategy and will understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful indoor sports complex business.

6. Adjust your marketing mix.

You could be selling tickets or a spot in the race. Either way, you’re not going to have success if you can’t get the word out. Here are a few tips for the three main areas you should be focusing on in your event marketing efforts:

Local Partnerships

Getting the word out to both fans and participants means meeting them where they already are. Think: gyms, golf courses, sports bars, and beyond. Partner with these sorts of local establishments to put yourself on everyone’s radar. Some of these businesses may even be willing to share promotions with participants or sponsor the event.

Social Media

Hyper-specific targeting makes social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram a great way to narrow your marketing to a more qualified audience that will be interested in your event. Use a custom audience to target users in a specific location by their interests (using sport, charitable cause, etc.). It’s a quick ticket to a pool of potential participants!

While email is crucial for communicating logistics, you’re probably only interacting with this channel if you hold an annual event. After all, if it’s your first year, you likely don’t have an email list to market to yet. For annual events, reaching out to participants and ticket purchasers from previous years is step number one in your event marketing playbook.

7. Work closely with the community.

For races especially, this one is HUGE. Reach out to the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) if your host city has one and ask them to connect you with the proper contacts for discussing potential disruptions such as traffic and noise. Not only will this ensure a good relationship with the community, it also ensures that the event will unfold smoothly. After all, running a race through the middle of the city is an orchestrated effort that requires a helping hand from several departments in the municipality.

8. Get crafty to find sponsors.

Whether you’re planning a tournament, a charity game, or something else altogether, sponsorship is a quintessential piece of the sports event management puzzle (and it’s almost always a possibility!). Here are a few keys to landing sponsors and getting the most out of the partnership:

  • Cast a wide net – The more you reach out, the more likely you are to find a viable sponsor.
  • Get creative – Sponsors can supply prizes, charitable contributions, equipment, uniforms, in-race refreshment, and beyond. The more open you are to creative spo n sorship ideas , the more likely you’ll be to land sponsors.
  • Look to similar events – Reach out to sponsors from similar events to see if they’d be interested in sponsoring your event as well. They’ll be easier to work with and more likely to participate since they know the ropes.

9. Consult with a legal expert.

There’s always a chance that a participant might get hurt during your event, and that could spell trouble if they try to hold you liable. As such, consulting with a legal expert to lock down the right language in any waivers of liability is a must for sporting events open to public participation. And while you could always download a waiver template from the internet, consulting a legal expert is the most dependable way to make sure that your waivers will hold up in a court of law.

Oh, and while we’re on the subject of injury: Make sure to have a first aid kit (or a medic for larger events) on hand.

turn around failing hotel

10. Source as much volunteer help as possible.

Nothing eats up a budget quite as quickly as having to pay for every single helping hand. Luckily, depending on the type of sporting event you’re planning, finding volunteers can be easy ” especially for charity events, fundraisers, and youth events (hello parent volunteers!). Volunteers can even be one of the many ways that businesses help sponsor your event, as it saves both parties money while still supplying your event with much needed manpower.

11. Don’t forget about prize insurance.

While it may be on your radar to insure your event, it might not be quite as evident to insure prizes and potential giveaways. So before you let someone try their luck at a $15,000 putt, it’s in your best interest to make sure that it won’t be coming out of your pocket.  Sure, the chances of your average Joe making a 50-yard putt are slim ” but a small fee up front is all it takes to make sure that a single stroke of luck doesn’t break the bank.

12. Make a play for media coverage.

Coverage during the event.

Word of mouth is your best bet for growing an event year over year, and there’s perhaps no better exposure than getting the media involved. With that being said, it’s not likely to happen all on its own. It’s up to your marketing team to track down contacts and connect with local media. For major outlets, this should be pretty easy ” but don’t stop there. Small-town publications and even college papers and radio stations can bring much-needed coverage and help boost event PR .

Pre-Event Coverage

Local event announcements are a little different, as they’re normally handled outside of the newsroom. Get in touch with event editors to find out their guidelines for submitting your event details for an announcement.

13. Not everyone is a referee.

Whether it’s parents butting heads at a little league game or company teams clashing at an unsuspecting soccer event, sometimes competition gets the best of fans and participants alike. Why? Oftentimes, it’s because of a bad call. So while volunteer referees might sound like a great idea when you’re crunching the numbers, they might not seem quite as appealing when you’re in the middle of a startup melee. Save yourself a sports event management headache by turning to a solution like a referee rental service.

14. Map it all out.

The easiest way to keep everyone on the same page on the big day is showing them exactly what’s expected. By diagramming the venue, event space, and all the moving parts, you paint a picture that ensures everything unfolds smoothly. 7 Essential Steps for Planning a Sports Event Fundraiser

This guide covers everything you need to know about planning a sports event.

business plan for sports tournament

Great Fundraising Events: From Experience to Transformation.

Organizing a sports event fundraiser requires preparation, logistical planning and a key understanding of the sport itself. From finding a venue and recruiting volunteers to arranging all-weather preparations and day-of logistics, a lot goes into putting together a successful sporting event.

But the effort is worth it when your nonprofit can plan a well-attended event that brings the community together to raise awareness of your mission and funding for your cause.

In this post, we’ll provide a checklist of everything you need to plan a successful sports event fundraiser. Here’s what we’ll cover:

7 steps to planning a successful sports event

8 sporting event volunteer roles to fill, how to promote your sports event fundraiser.

A well-run event can enhance your nonprofit’s reputation, helping you recruit more participants and attendees the next time you host a sports fundraiser. Let’s dive in!

Use this checklist to plan your sports event fundraiser. The checklist details are given below.

1. Set event goals

Your goals will keep your event planning team on the same page and ensure they’re working to generate the most value possible for your nonprofit. To set your goals, answer the following questions when you first sit down to start planning your sports event:

  • What type of sports event will you host? Whether it’s a spectator event, a 5K or a sports tournament, your fundraiser’s format determines the logistical requirements needed to make it successful.
  • What is your fundraising goal? How much you hope to raise will impact your budgeting considerations and ticket-selling goals. Your revenue should exceed your expenses to achieve a positive ROI. Consult past fundraising event results to come up with an achievable but ambitious target.
  • Who will attend the event? Who is your target audience for your event? Consider both your participant and spectator audiences. For example, if you’re hosting a youth sports tournament, your participants will be youth athletes and the spectators will be their families. If you’re hosting a 5K event, participants may be community members and spectators will be their family members, friends and other community members.
  • When and where will the event take place? What type of venue will you need to successfully host your event? How much will the venue rental cost? Are there any weather conditions you’ll need to consider during your event planning process?

The more detail you can provide when answering these questions, the easier the rest of your event planning process will be.

2. Determine expected attendance and necessary staff

Review past fundraising events to understand the type of turnout you can expect for your sporting event. Research similar events that have been hosted in your community and check if you can get access to those events’ attendance numbers.

Once you have a good idea of how many attendees your event can bring in, determine how many event staff and volunteers you’ll need. Large sporting events might take place across multiple sites, meaning you may need a large volunteer team to keep the event running smoothly. Even smaller-scale events require several volunteer roles, from check-in to referees and concessions.

When it comes time to recruit volunteers , start by reaching out personally to past event volunteers to see if they’d be interested in helping out again. You can also put out a general call for help on your website, email newsletter and social media pages.

Be sure to offer volunteers perks for signing up, such as a free t-shirt or a free lunch on event day.

3. Choose a venue

Nailing down your event’s venue should be a top priority. Depending on the type of sports event you’re hosting, the number of venues in your area may be limited. For example, there may only be one or two gymnastics clubs with available space. In contrast, if you are hosting a soccer tournament, there may be multiple fields to choose from.

When selecting your venue, consider how people will get to and from your event and around the site on event day. For example, do you need to rent shuttle buses to move people from the parking lot to your event venue? Do you need to contact the local authorities for permission to block off a section of the street? Think through these considerations well in advance to get the sign-off you need ahead of your event.

4. Streamline ticketing and sign-ups

Invest in a convenient and simple ticketing tool to streamline the sign-up process. Customers should be able to purchase tickets directly from your website, whether they’re using laptops or mobile devices.

Ensure the athlete sign-up process is straightforward as well by using a simple online registration form. Communicate event logistics with participants, such as when to arrive and how to sign in, to ensure they are kept in the loop leading up to the big day.

5. Recruit sponsors

Sponsors can help cover the cost of your sporting event, giving you more flexibility when it comes to your venue and other overhead costs. Reach out to local businesses to ask if they’d like to sponsor your event in exchange for advertising on your event’s website, banner, t-shirts and other promotional materials. You can also reach out to local restaurants to see if they’d be willing to donate food or offer discounted event catering prices.

6. Prioritize safety

Have medical staff on-site and ready to treat injuries for players or fans. From first aid volunteers to hydration stations, make sure you have everything in place to help participants if and when the need arises.

Investing in volunteer management software that’s equipped with a volunteer app will allow you to manage your staff and communicate with volunteers quickly about emergencies. This can be critical for keeping attendees safe and event staff in the loop.

7. Prep for the weather

Many sporting events take place outdoors, meaning you may have to deal with unpredictable weather. Consider planning for a rain-check date in case inclement weather prevents you from hosting the event on the original date.

Some sporting events might be able to continue rain or shine, but bad weather could negatively impact the spectator experience. You might plan to place tents over the spectator bleachers to help people stay dry in the event of rain.

A particularly hot day can also present challenges for athletes and spectators. You’ll need to make sure there are plenty of places to sit in the shade and grab water to keep participants hydrated.

If you’ve planned a major fundraising event before, you know that winging the prep just doesn’t work. Before your event starts, ensure you already have designated duties and a complete schedule for volunteers.

To help out, we’ve made a list of eight essential volunteer roles for your next sporting-related fundraising event:

These are the roles you’ll have to fill when planning your sporting event. The exact roles and details about them are given below.

Designate a volunteer crew to arrive a few hours before your event begins (or the previous day if needed) to set up your event. They might set up your registration tent and concession stand or post signage around the venue to help direct attendees.

2. Registration and check-in

Assign volunteers to take tickets if your event is a ticketed experience and check in athletes or teams when they arrive. These volunteers will create a first impression for attendees. To facilitate a smooth check-in, make sure they’re equipped with the resources they need. This might include tablets to track athlete attendance or name tags for participants to use.

3. Information/first aid station

If your event’s venue spans multiple fields or courts, it can be helpful to assign volunteers to an information station. Participants will have a clear, central place to go to get their questions answered. It’s also helpful to put your first-aid station near your information desk and clearly mark the station with signs so participants who need medical aid can find help quickly.

4. Concessions/merchandise

Selling concessions can help your nonprofit raise additional funds throughout your event. Ask volunteers with cooking experience to help cook up classic sports-tournament grub like hot dogs and hamburgers. You might also offer snacks like chips and cookies, as well as soda and water bottles.

If your event has merchandise, such as branded t-shirts and hats, you can also assign volunteers to sell these items at your merchandise booth.

5. Scorekeepers and referees

Sporting events often require volunteer scorekeepers and referees. Reach out to local referee organizations to ask for volunteers for your tournament. Provide an online checklist of pre-game duties such as inspecting the field, meeting the coaches, completing reports and checking in players. Lastly, provide referees with a detailed list of the rules and regulations of your sports event.

Provide scorekeepers with scorekeeping technology and train them on how to update the scoreboard if you have one. You might also consider providing templates for keeping track of player statistics and standings and writing reports.

6. Floaters

There are always things that come up on the fly during a sporting event, so it’s worthwhile to assign a team of volunteers who are ready to help out anywhere. Make floaters their own role, rather than pulling volunteers off other roles when it gets busy. Volunteer management software can help maintain real-time communication with floaters so you can contact them wherever they are.

7. Parking attendants

Parking is often where attendees find the most frustration. Create a team of volunteers who can ensure that the parking process is as painless and easy as possible. Post parking maps online so your volunteers and attendees can familiarize themselves with the parking zones ahead of time.

8. Breakdown

Designate a fresh breakdown crew on the schedule instead of using the same crew that arrived early for setup. Post a checklist of breakdown duties on your volunteer app and provide printed lists. Make sure all breakdown volunteers follow appropriate safety procedures.

Finally, designate an official trash crew and assign them sections to monitor and clean during the tournament. Keep in contact with them in real-time if you need to call them for an emergency cleanup.

All of these volunteer roles contribute to the success of your event, meaning you should make it a priority to show appreciation to everyone involved. Send detailed thank you emails after your event concludes or give volunteers appreciation gifts such as gift cards or tote bags.

Social media is a staple of our everyday lives, and it’s fair to say that your event could benefit from drumming up some interest online. Leverage social media to make sure people know when and where your event takes place. Start by sending out teasers and, as the event gets closer, release more specific details.

The more you can spread the word before, during and after your event, the greater its success is likely to be. Here are a few of our favorite marketing strategies to roll out as you plan your sports event:

1. Create a Facebook event page

Facebook is a natural place to promote your sports event fundraiser because 35 million people view public events on Facebook each day. Use a high-quality banner image on your event page and provide information potential attendees need to know. This includes details about:

  • What activities will take place at your event
  • What you’re raising funding for
  • Who can sign up to participate
  • Where and when the event will take place
  • Entry fee information

You can reach out specifically to dedicated supporters to invite them to your event. Be sure to post the event page widely within Facebook groups and on your news feed to keep your event on supporters’ radars.

2. Promote your event on other social media platforms

While Facebook offers great event promotion options, it’s important to promote your event through all your social media channels. Here are a few additional platforms to consider:

Regardless of the channels you choose, consider creating a unique hashtag, holding contests and ticket giveaways and encouraging user interaction to spread the word as far as possible. Sporting events can bring in a wide range of audience demographics, so the more channels you use to promote your event, the wider an audience you’ll reach.

3. Ask supporters to help promote your event

Your event will likely include participation from multiple organizations, such as local sports teams, food vendors and sponsors. Ask participating organizations to promote your event on their social media pages and other marketing outlets. In return, publicly thank them for their involvement on social media and share links to their social media pages or websites.

4. Consider paid advertising

All major social media platforms offer pay-per-click advertising as a way to reach your target demographics. These channels, as well as Google’s search advertisements, provide a streamlined way to better reach your target audience. Nonprofits can even apply for the Google Ad Grant program which provides $10,000 per month in free Google advertising to qualifying organizations.

5. Connect with the local news

Reach out to local news outlets like newspapers, radio stations and local TV stations to ask if they would be interested in promoting your upcoming sports event. Write up a press release with information local news outlets will need to have for your event, such as the date, time, location and how to register or purchase a ticket.

2.  Define your business – Provide a clear and accurate summary of your business and what it is about. Outline what produces/services you will provide.

3.  Identify your market – and more specifically your target consumers. Who will you sell to, what are their demographics ie. What age groups, gender are they and what regions of the country do they live in?

4.  Competitive Analysis – what and who could your competitors be? Remember that this doesn’t just have to be direct competitors.

5.  Pricing structure – Be sure to detail your selling price, costs any other investors in the business so you have a clear financial plan. This will help the bank/potential investors to be clear about the opportunity that your business can provide.

6.  Operations – detail the operational side of the business from facilities to employees including management and the structure of the business.

7.  Sales and Marketing – how will you sell your products/services? How will you promote your business and your products? What will the costs be and the expected results?

8.  Demonstrate that you have identified any potential risks and have plans in place in certain scenarios – investors will be more prepared to part with their cash if they can see that a risk assessment has been done.

Other top tips:.

• Allow plenty of time – putting together the right business plan can take time. Not only do you need to gather all of the information required but then you need to sit down and put it together in the right way.

• Start with a template – there are lots of great business plan templates available which are an excellent starting point to help you to build the perfect business plan. Both Princess Trust and Barclays provide great examples.

• Keep the plan clear, precise and professional. Your business plan represents you and your business so it is important to deliver the right impression

• Avoid too much detail in the main body of the plan. Many business plans are simply too long! Keep the body of the document clear and accurate and include any supporting information in the appendix (making sure that you reference it).

• Don’t be afraid to ask advice – review the document with any business colleagues or friends you trust to give you constructive feedback.

Industry Analysis

The indoor sports facility industry is expected to grow over the next five years to over $117,640 million in 2029. The growth will be driven by an increase in the number of individuals who want to maintain good physical condition. The growth will be driven by an increase in children and teens who want to stay active instead of sitting indoors. The growth will be driven by families who want to exercise and play games together, or in tournaments against other families as a form of entertainment. The growth will be driven by individuals who want to increase strength and cardio fitness. The growth will be driven by individuals who want to play basketball without an assigned team or any ongoing commitments. Costs will likely be reduced as an increasing number of indoor sports facilities are built and maintained within communities of individuals and families.

Competitive Analysis

Direct and indirect competitors.

Vertical Arc will face competition from other companies with similar business profiles. A description of each competitor company is below.

Allendale Township Sports Club

The Allendale Township Sports Club is a large facility sporting 4 basketball courts, 6 racquetball courts, 4 squash courts, 4 tennis courts, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a children’s pool, workout rooms, steam and sauna rooms, a dining hall that seats 200 guests, an indoor game area (video arcade games, pool tables, foosball tables), and a specially-equipped Peloton room.

Owned by Chess and MaryAnn Murray, the Allendale Township Sports Facility is a private membership sports club that is a direct competitor to Vertical Arc. The general public may not use the facilities unless accompanied by a club member and there are no “open play” dates for the general public in any area. Membership dues are $150,000 to join, with yearly dues of $25,000, plus required usage of the dining hall and other monthly usage charges.

Grand Forks YMCA Sports Facility

The Grand Forks YMCA Sports Facility is a community-directed, all-inclusive sports center. The facility includes a Fitness Center, Extra-large Swimming Pool, Gymnasium, offering Group Exercise Classes and a Childcare Center to engage children while parents use the facility. There are also community rooms, where speakers can present topics of interest and family-style movies can be presented.

The concept behind the YMCA non-profit organization is one of strengthening family and community ties. This facility holds several meetings monthly to encourage that concept and is led by 3 volunteers who oversee the programs. One executive director, Todd Beaman, is responsible for garnering additional users of the YMCA and adding families to the roster, along with fostering a strong sense of community.

Grand Forks West Sports Courts

The Grand Forks West Sports Courts cater to individuals and families who want to exercise and play active games indoors. The facilities include 4 basketball courts with bleachers, an indoor soccer court, 4 tennis courts, 4 racquetball courts and an indoor swimming pool for adults and children. Situated on the southwest side of Grand Forks, this facility is a direct competitor of Vertical Arc and is open to the public. There are open basketball play hours during the day and limited basketball games through league and tournament play available in the weekday evenings. On the weekends, there are no scheduled games throughout the facility; participants may join any game at any time. Children play in designated courts and swimming areas; otherwise, there are rooms with video games, pool tables, foosball tables and indoor bowling lanes for youth and children to use.

University of North Dakota

The University of North Dakota has an extensive basketball team and regularly offers the indoor courts for public play when the team is not training or practicing. The court players are allowed to use the basketballs and other equipment during play and an attendant is always present to help with any request. Open basketball play hours extend from 7 am to 10 pm on “off training” days. While a direct competitor in some regard, this facility does not include any further amenities other than the basketball courts and, as such, may be defined as an indirect competitor, as well. There are no bleachers for observers, no other rooms, such as workout, showers, steam rooms available. The basketball coaches will sometimes offer to train open-play visitors, which results in excellent training on a casual basis. Children are not accommodated in the facility, nor are teens under the age of 18.

These incentives will help customers overcome any resistance to visiting Vertical Arc to enjoy the facilities and meet new friends.

Website/SEO Marketing

Vertical Arc will utilize their website as a highly-communicative portal of customer information, announcements, services that are available 24/7, children’s programs, youth camps, and all other activities and upcoming games. The website will also list contact information and available or open basketball times for public play. Vertical Arc’s website presence will be enhanced with SEO marketing tactics so that anytime someone types in the Google or Bing search engine “Sports Facility” or “Indoor Sports near me”, Vertical Arc will be listed at the top of the search results.

The pricing of Vertical Arc will be moderate and on par with competitors so customers feel they receive excellent value when purchasing their services.

Youth Sports Nonprofit Business Plan

Start your own youth sports nonprofit business plan

YouthSports

Executive summary executive summary is a brief introduction to your business plan. it describes your business, the problem that it solves, your target market, and financial highlights.">.

Twenty-five percent of Richmond Metro youth participated in organized sports last year, compared with 85 to 90 percent in the suburbs, according to a recent State University report entitled Richmond’s Youth Sport Need Assessment. Currently, there are 40,000 children in the Richmond Metro area between the ages of 6 to 14. In contrast to the metro area, the suburbs have a full array of youth sports with strong financial support. This late start for urban children, especially urban girls, in organized sports robs them of the opportunity for physical activity, coaching, being part of a team, learning skills, and substantial time away from “negative recreation” (drugs, violence or sexual activities).

Clinical studies also show that sports and recreation programs can help youth establish lifelong, healthy, physical activity patterns. Regular physical activity can ward off life-threatening diseases; reduce feelings of depression and anxiety; help control weight and obesity; and build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints, according to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness.

The children in the city’s core must have the opportunity for a successful start in education and sport regardless of age, race, gender, family composition, income or community. In response to this significant disparity, YouthSports will be created to provide the sports program necessary for Richmond children to have equal opportunity for organized sports.

Thanks to a three-year matching grant from The John Ford Stevenson Foundation (JFSF), YouthSports and several corporate partners plan to utilize organized sports and physical activity programs to promote healthy development in youth.

The JFSF, based in San Francisco, CA, is the nation’s largest philanthropy devoted exclusively to health and health care. It concentrates its grantmaking in three goal areas: to assure that all Americans have access to basic health care at reasonable cost; to improve care and support for people with chronic health conditions; and to reduce the personal, social and economic harm caused by substance abuse; tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs.

Schools and health care centers will host sport registration. The JFSF renewable matching grant is based on the concept that local funding sources have the clearest understanding of their communities’ needs. With matching contributions from local partners, the project will receive substantial funding.

Collaborating partners include:

  • BlueCross/BlueShield.
  • Mayor Linda Hargrove and the City of Richmond.
  • Parks & Recreation Department.
  • Richmond Unified School District.
  • Templex Corporation.
  • A.I. Kaufman and Sons.
  • PriceRight Supermarkets.
  • Avion Computers.
  • The Richmond Mall.
  • Richmond Bank.
  • Rider Corporation.

With this base of support, YouthSports will raise additional money from program sponsors and fundraising campaigns.

Youth sports nonprofit business plan, executive summary chart image

1.1 Objectives

  • To increase participation in youth sports and recreation programs in the Richmond Metro area.
  • To increase youth access to health care and healthy development.

1.2 Mission

The mission of YouthSports is to create a youth sport program in the Richmond Metro area increasing both sport participation rates and healthy development of the area’s youth.

1.3 Keys to Success

  • Utilizing the school system to promote the sports program and recruiting team coaches.
  • Minimize field maintenance and facility costs with the school and city park systems.
  • Maintaining the City Council’s support to provide scholarship funds for needy youth who want to participate in sports.
  • Recruiting more corporate support for the sports program.
  • Maintaining a high approval rate with the area’s parents and youth.

Organization Summary organization overview ) is an overview of the most important points about your company—your history, management team, location, mission statement and legal structure.">

YouthSports will be a private, non-profit, youth sports program serving children, ages 6-14, in the Richmond Metro area. The focus of the program is to promote youth sport participation, promote healthy development in youth, and increase youth access to health care.

YouthSports has rented office space near the city cent park system. Outdoor sports will be played on public school and park property. Indoor sports will be played in public school gyms.

2.1 Start-up Summary

Start-up costs and initial financing are shown on the following tables and chart.

Youth sports nonprofit business plan, organization summary chart image

YouthSports will offer the following sports during the year:

  • Flag Football, August-November.
  • 1st/2nd Grade Basketball, October-December.
  • 3rd-8th Grade Basketball, December-March.
  • Spring Soccer, March-May.
  • T-Ball/Softball/Baseball, May-July.

Market Analysis Summary how to do a market analysis for your business plan.">

There are 40,000 children in the Richmond Metro area between six to 14 years of age. The age group percentages break down as follows:

  • 50% – Ages 6-8.
  • 30% – Ages 9-11.
  • 20% – Ages 12-14.

Currently, only 10% of 6 -11 year olds in the Richmond Metro area participate in organized sports. More importantly, only 5% of girls in that age group are involved in sports. The current age break down provides YouthSports with an excellent opportunity to impact half of our target group at the youngest ages. This will have a tremendous impact on the success of the program over the next five years.

It is also important to note that there are over 25,000 children in the Richmond Metro area between the ages of two to five. These children will be entering the YouthSports program within the next three years.

4.1 Market Segmentation

The 2-5 and 6-8 age groups represent over 70% of the children that YouthSports will serve over the next three years. It is critical that the program is prepared to manage the influx of these young children.

Strategy and Implementation Summary

It is critical that YouthSports takes a proactive strategy in promoting its program in the community as well as creating a strong fund-raising program. To accomplish these goals, YouthSports will have two groups overseeing the program’s growth and development. The first will be a 12-member Program Services Group comprising of community members. This group will provide oversight of the program’s service delivery to the community and will also be responsible for building community support for YouthSports. The second group will be a 10-member Finance Group that will have Richmond business representation. The Finance Group will have oversight over the program’s fiscal operation and fund-raising activities.

Mobilizing a coaching/supervision base will provide YouthSports the people power necessary to get its message to the entire community.

Sign-up for the program will be simplified by providing participation forms at each school and at the larger community markets. At each location, there will be a collection kiosk where the forms can be dropped off.

5.1 Competitive Edge

YouthSports’ competitive edge is twofold. One is the support of the community’s public resources to build a successful sports program that will have a positive impact on the attitude and health of the area’s children.

The school district has committed to strongly pushing the sports program. Each of the area’s elementary and middle schools will choose a school team name. The name will then be used by the school teams. Sport participation will be promoted in the classroom and volunteer coaches will be allowed to visit classrooms and speak to the children.

The city park system has been pivotal in obtaining sports equipment for the program at a discounted rate, saving the program a large expense.

The program’s second advantage is the support of businesses to have a real impact on the metro youth. The revitalization of the Richmond’s urban center can only be built upon the improved quality of life of metro residents. The current demographics, with the majority of metro children under the age of six, provides a unique opportunity to have a dynamic impact on the area’s youth. Richmond businesses are lining up to become sport sponsors and school team sponsors.

5.2 Fundraising Strategy

YouthSports will be directing its fund-raising program at two groups. One will be the metro area parents, the other will be Richmond’s businesses. Being successful with both groups is key to the program’s future.

  • Metro Area Parents : The program’s expectations is that sign-up fees will pay for only 30% of operating cost but the fee is crucial for several reasons. First, without a sense of ownership in the program the community will not support the program over time. Second, a monetary commitment to the program creates an expectation of services that will push the program to become more responsive to the community needs. The third reason, and the most important, is that the fee is an organizing tool to recruit volunteers who will commit to work a number of hours for the program as part of a child scholarship agreement.
  • Richmond Businesses : Local businesses can become sponsors of YouthSports sport seasons (like PriceRight can sponsor the Flag Football Season), school teams, or sport tournaments. With the sponsorship will come the opportunity to have the company name on field/facility banners, team uniforms, and YouthSports mass mailings. YouthSports will also have four high-profile fundraisers each year.

5.2.1 Funding Forecast

The following is the funding forecast for three years.

The program team will have the following positions:

  • Assistant Director.
  • Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Sponsorship/Fundraising Developer.
  • Facility Coordinator.
  • Coordinator of Game Officials.

  • Office Manager.

Are you about starting an eSports organization? If YES, here is a detailed sample eSports organization business plan template & FREE feasibility report. eSports is one of the fast-rising businesses in the world today that is attracting attention in the right quarters. Starting an eSports organization business can be rewarding but you have to compete with other well – established stakeholders in the United States and across the globe.

The fact that you will be competing with people from all over the globe is enough reason for you to be result oriented and at the same time be creative with your eSports organization business. Below is a sample eSports organization business plan template that can help you write your own business plan with little or no stress.

1. Industry Overview

eSports which can also be referred to as electronic sports, e-sports, or eSports is a type of competition sports using video games. eSports often takes the form of organized, multiplayer video game competitions, particularly between professional players, individually or as teams. This line of business is grouped under the video games industry.

The most common video game genres associated with eSports are multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), first-person shooter (FPS), fighting, digital collectible card games, battle royale games, and real-time strategy (RTS). Popular esports games include League of Legends, Dota 2, Counter-Strike, Overwatch, Super Smash Bros., and StarCraft, among many others.

Tournaments such as the League of Legends World Championship, Dota 2’s The International, the fighting games-specific Evolution Championship Series (EVO), and the Intel Extreme Masters provide live broadcasts of the competition and prize money for the competitors.

According to a report published by IBISWorld, the Video Games industry experienced strong returns to spending on industry products during the latter half of the five-year period to 2018. While the emergence of low-cost games for mobile devices has slowed demand for other games and may continue to temper growth opportunities in the foreseeable future, industry revenue has picked up amid stronger sales in games, downloadable content (DLC), consoles and their corresponding products.

Over the five years to 2018, industry revenue increased at an annualized rate of 7.2 percent. In 2018, revenue is expected to total $43.7 billion. This growth was assisted by growing consumer incomes and the releases of the revised Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as well as the Nintendo Switch, throughout the five-year period.

Recent statistics shows that eSports Viewership is Growing. Between 2016 and 2017, there was a 19.3 percent increase year over year. In 2017, there were 192 million casual viewers and 143 million enthusiasts, making the total audience 335 million, and there will be 250 million eSports enthusiasts, making the total audience 557 million.

The video games Industry is indeed a very large industry and pretty much thriving in all parts of the world especially in developed countries like united states of America, Italy, United Kingdom , Hong Kong, Japan, China, Australia, et al.

Statistics has it that in the United States of America alone, there are about 144,152 licensed and registered eSports organizations responsible for employing about 230,914 employees and the industry rakes in a whooping sum of $44 billion annually with an annual growth rate projected at 7.2 percent between 2013 and 2018.

It is important to state that Cloud9 is the most valuable professional eSports company, worth $310 million, in part because of its success across a wide variety of games. They have a lion share of the available market in this industry.

In 2015 it was estimated by SuperData Research that the global esports industry generated revenue of around US$748.8 million that year. Asia is the leading esports market with over $321 million in revenue, North America is around $224 million, and Europe has $172 million and the rest of the world for about $29 million. Global esports revenue is estimated to reach $1.9 billion by 2018.

The video games industry has a relatively moderate level of capital intensity. It is a known fact that the start-up capital costs for a standard eSport organization and video games facility are high, as an entrepreneur who wants to start this business is required to lease a big facility in a good location.

The fact that facilities can be rented and all other equipment requires only a one-time investment makes it a business a good business to start. You will also rely on your employees to help you supervise the team, guests, operate facilities and maintain equipment. On the average, a standard eSport organization has 12 employees excluding team players – professional gamers.

Some of the factors that encourage entrepreneurs to start their own eSport organization is that the business is thriving and it is open to fair competition in the industry. As a matter of fact, most eSports organizations start making profits within few months of establishment as long as they have professional gamers in their team.

Over and above, starting an eSport organization business in the United States of America can be demanding, it requires enough cash to acquire a standard facility to accommodate standard video gaming gadgets and parking and also cash to equip the facility. You will also need enough cash to organize eSports competitions and to pay prize money to winners.

Cloud Zero® ESport Organization, Inc. is in business to provide an ideal platform for eSports teams and pro gamers in East Rutherford to grow and compete at eSport competitions, locally, nationally and internationally, and at the same time to make profits.

We are aware that there are competitions in the Video games industry especially as it relates to attracting mouth watering sponsorship deals which is why we took our time to conduct an effective SWOT Analysis before investing our hard earned money into the business.

We know that if we get things right before starting our eSports organization, we will not have to struggle before attracting eSports teams and pro gamers with good pedigree to compete at our tourneys and build our viewership base to a level where we can easily breakeven.

We hired the services of an HR and Business consultant with bias in business structuring to help us conduct SWOT analysis for our organization and he did a pretty good job for us. Here is a of the result we got from the SWOT analysis that was conducted on behalf of Cloud Zero® eSports Organization, Inc.;

We are a standard eSports organization with robust relationship with organizations and individuals who have the capacity to cut high – paying sponsorship deals for all our competitions. That perhaps is top on the list for us. Thankfully, our CEO is an influential figure in the eSports industry not only in the United States of America, but all across the globe.

We critically looked into our Business model and we were able to identify two major weaknesses. One is the fact that we are a new business and the second is the fact that we may not have the financial resources required to match up with existing and high – flying eSports organizations in New Jersey when it comes to employing experts in the industry and generating the needed hype that can drive traffic towards our eSports organization.

  • Opportunities:

No doubt, the opportunities in this business are massive and it is growing by the day. In 2019, it was estimated that the total audience of esports would grow to 454 million viewers and that revenue would increase to over US$1 billion. The increasing availability of online streaming media platforms, particularly YouTube and Twitch have become central to the growth and promotion of esports competitions.

A major threat that may affect our business is unfavorable government policies . For example, despite its large video game market, esports in Japan is relatively underdeveloped, and this has been attributed largely to its broad anti-gambling laws which prohibit paid professional gaming tournaments.

Bad press can also affect our business – The legitimacy of esports as a sports competition remains in question; however, esports has been featured alongside traditional sports in multinational events, and the International Olympic Committee has explored incorporating them into future Olympic events.

7. MARKET ANALYSIS

  • Market Trends

Prior to this era, video games most often relied on high scores to determine the best player, but this changed with Street Fighter II, where players would instead challenge each other directly, “face-to-face,” to determine the best player, paving the way for the competitive multiplayer and deathmatch modes found in modern action games.

The popularity of fighting games such as Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom in the 1990s led to the foundation of the international Evolution Championship Series (EVO) esports tournament in 1996.

All through the 2010s, esports grew tremendously, incurring a large increase in both viewership and prize money. eSports viewers spent 17.9 million hours watching their gaming heroes on those channels in the first quarter of 2018. The most popular game to watch is Dota 2, followed by League of Legends and Counter Strike: Global Offensive.

In recent time, an agency can help eSports teams negotiate, sign and collect payments from such sponsors, and they also help to manage the relationship between the team and brand. Essentially, brands and eSports teams can both benefit from sponsorship deals.

Demographically, Major League Gaming has reported viewership that is approximately 85 percent male and 15 percent female, with a majority of viewers between the ages of 18 and 34. Despite this, several female personalities within esports are hopeful about the increasing presence of female gamers.

Lastly, the modern esports boom has also seen a rise in video games companies embracing the esports potential of their products.

When it comes to salaries for team members, regular eSports salaries vary from team to team and from player to player. Exploring the Types of Careers in Sport Event Management

Two sport managers organizing an event in sport hall.

In the world of sports, there’s more happening behind the scenes than you might think. While athletes and coaches are the public face of sports, professionals in sports management make the games, events, and training programs possible.

From planning major sporting events to running athletic programs at colleges, sport management careers offer a range of opportunities that require various skill sets and present different challenges. 1

Career development in sport management

A degree in sports management is a starting point for numerous possible career trajectories. Whether you know exactly what job you want to pursue when you graduate or are just starting to explore your options, you’ll need to proactively engage in career development as part of your educational experience. Some ways you can advance your career in sports management include: 2

  • Identify your interests and skills
  • Seek out volunteer opportunities to gain practical experience
  • Reach out to a mentor
  • Identify trends for gaps or niches you can fill
  • Expand your network by attending events and meeting people
  • Build your reputation by adding value to the industry

You should also study the market to fully understand the many possible career paths you can follow with a sport management degree. Read on to explore some of these exciting opportunities.

Event planner

If you enjoy the excitement of live sporting events and the satisfaction that comes from pulling off a seamless operation, then being a sports event planner could be your calling. An event planner coordinates various elements that contribute to the successful execution of a sports event, whether it's a local tournament or an international championship.

Event planning includes logistical planning, such as securing the venue, scheduling the event, and coordinating the arrival and setup of equipment. Planners liaise between coaches, sports organizations, sponsors, workers, and vendors to coordinate schedules, accommodations, and other behind-the-scenes aspects. 3

Sports marketing specialist

Sports marketers work for teams or leagues to plan activities and programs that will generate interest in their leagues, teams, athletes, and events. They may plan activities during sporting events to hype up the fans or plan promotional giveaways.

Drawing on a wide range of skills, sports marketers may run advertising campaigns and determine which media outlets to advertise with. They create and execute marketing strategies aimed at engaging fans, increasing ticket sales, and maximizing brand visibility.

When a significant game or tournament is on the horizon, a sports marketing specialist may orchestrate multi-channel advertising campaigns, which can include anything from social media teasers to traditional billboards. They might also manage logistics for promotional events like fan meet-and-greets or autograph sessions. 4

Sports agent

Star athletes need someone to manage the business end of their careers so they can focus on competing. A sports agent is a promoter, negotiator, and advisor for their clients. It’s a challenging, fast-paced, exciting career with a high-income potential.

With a single-minded focus on advancing the careers of their clients, sports agents handle business, legal, and PR matters. 4 They’re always on the lookout for new talent to represent, so sports agents frequently attend scouting events.

Sports agents also seek out opportunities for their clients, such as endorsements and media opportunities. They negotiate contracts to get their clients the best deal, whether it’s from playing their sport or promoting a product. 5

Team manager

Sports team managers work for a team to organize and coordinate their activities. They collaborate with other team leaders, such as coaches and trainers, to handle everything from team training to travel to administration. Sports managers' duties may include: 6

  • Scheduling team training, practices, and travel
  • Handling budgeting and accounting
  • Representing the team to the media
  • Working with the brands and donors to schedule appearances
  • Coordinating media and event appearances for athletes
  • Negotiating team funding and endorsements

Recreation manager

If you’re more interested in coordinating local sporting events for your community, you may enjoy being a recreation manager. Recreation managers work in parks, community centers, and other recreational areas. They coordinate physical activities for youth, adults, and seniors.

Recreation managers often perform multiple roles, including planning events, coordinating leagues, and overseeing facilities.

Community engagement forms a significant part of their role. A recreation manager often works closely with community members to identify their needs and preferences. This could involve conducting surveys, holding public meetings, or partnering with local organizations. 7

Athletic director

An athletic director typically oversees the athletic programs of educational institutions, ensuring the smooth functioning of each sport offered, from scheduling games to budgeting. They also play a significant role in hiring coaches, setting game or match schedules, and ensuring compliance with athletic regulations. However, their role has significantly evolved in recent times. With the proliferation of professional sport organizations and specialized sport leagues, their responsibilities have broadened. Now, an athletic director job might not just be about school or college sports. It could also involve liaising with professional athletes, overseeing expansive sport facilities, or even dabbling in sports marketing. This evolution emphasizes the need for athletic directors to have a holistic understanding of both the sporting and management aspects of their roles.

Athletic administrator

An athletic administrator oversees the administrative aspects of an athletic program, often at a high school, college, or professional sport organization. In the evolving landscape of the sport industry, these administrators play an integral role, from budgeting for sport programs to ensuring compliance with rules and regulations.

Working hand-in-hand with athletic directors, they harmonize the department's strategic vision with day-to-day operations. This synergy entails crafting game schedules, managing logistical facets of sporting events such as security and ticket sales, and even introducing community-focused activities.

Their pivotal role often attracts individuals with a degree in sport management, offering them an avenue to significantly influence the sport realm in both educational and professional settings. They also oversee the logistical aspects of hosting athletic events, such as security, ticket sales, and facility preparation. In addition, they may develop new activities based on community interests. 8

Emerging trends shaping the future of sport management careers

The sport industry is in the throes of a significant transformation. Digitalization, in particular, has permeated every facet of the industry, from how professional athletes engage with their fans to the way sporting events are conceived and executed. These changes have expanded the scope and depth of sport management careers.

At the center of this revolution is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). 9 They're not just changing traditional roles but also introducing new ones. Here's a glimpse:

Acquiring new talent : Sport organizations are leaning into AI-driven tools and platforms to unearth and recruit the next big star, making talent scouting more data-driven and precise.

Tracking player performance : The use of AI has enabled the sports world to have real-time performance metrics, transforming how teams strategize during games.

Injury prevention : By monitoring the physical stats of professional athletes through wearable technology, AI helps forecast potential injuries, leading to more personalized training regimes.

Planning matches and events : Predictive analytics, a facet of ML, is streamlining how matches are scheduled, considering several variables like player availability, ticket sales, and even weather conditions.

Determining a player's economic value : AI aids in evaluating an athlete's worth, analyzing game stats, market trends, and a team's specific needs.

Virtual and augmented reality: The fan experience is being transformed with AR and VR, from virtual stadium tours to enhanced live match viewing experiences.

While AI and ML are transformative, other emerging trends are also pivotal in reshaping sport management. 10 Traditional sport organizations are now merging with the realm of e-sports, recognizing its tremendous growth and potential.

There's also a heightened emphasis on sustainability, with sport leagues and events focusing on eco-friendly initiatives. Furthermore, the emphasis on diversity and inclusion ensures that the sport industry is more representative and inclusive than ever before.

Considering these developments, a career in sport management is not just limited to traditional roles like athletic director or sports agent. There's a myriad of opportunities spanning across event planning, facilities management, sport marketing, and more. Whether it's managing sport programs at colleges, coordinating major sporting events, or diving deep into sports statistician roles, there's something for everyone.

Those looking to delve into this dynamic field might consider a sport management degree or a master's degree to gain a comprehensive understanding of the industry's business aspects. With the sports market continuously evolving, there’s also an emphasis on career growth and development. By honing specific skills like public relations, business development, or event planning, individuals can position themselves at the forefront of this industry.

In essence, the landscape of sport management careers is more diverse and promising than ever. Whether one's interest lies in sport administration, athlete development, or any other niche, the future promises a plethora of opportunities for those passionate about the world of sports.

Broadening horizons in sports business

The sports business landscape has been undergoing a metamorphosis. With new technological advancements and innovative marketing strategies, the financial dimensions of sports are becoming more intricate.

Major league baseball, for instance, is not just about the games anymore; it's about creating immersive experiences for fans, both online and offline. This broadening horizon means that individuals with combined expertise in business administration and sport management are in high demand.

Exploring advanced degrees and specializations

While a bachelor's degree in sport management provides a solid foundation, many are now considering an advanced degree to specialize further. Whether it's focusing on the legal aspects of sports, delving deep into event management, or understanding the nitty-gritty of sport marketing, an advanced degree can offer a competitive edge.

The global appeal of professional sports

Professional sports are no longer limited to one's home country. With leagues like the NBA, NFL, and even Major League Soccer gaining followers worldwide, there's a pressing need for professionals who understand the global sports market. Those with a degree in sport management are finding opportunities not just in the US but also in emerging sports markets like Asia and Africa.

Building robust sport organizations

With the increasing diversification of sports, sport organizations are focusing on becoming more resilient and adaptable. From adopting sustainable practices to ensuring financial stability in uncertain times, there's a need for professionals who can guide these organizations forward.

NASCAR announces in-season, bracket-style tournament with $1 million prize set to debut in 2025

There's a new twist coming to nascar.

gettyimages-1252154894.jpg

The in-season tournament craze that found major success in the NBA this season is coming to the raceway next: NASCAR announced Monday that it will introduce an in-season, bracket-style head-to-head tournament in 2025. The winner will receive a $1 million prize.

The announcement comes just a few months after NASCAR came to a massive new media rights deal with with four broadcast partners -- Fox Sports, Amazon Prime, Warner Bros. Discovery and NBC Sports -- from 2025 to 2031.

"With the launch of our new media rights partnerships in 2025, we were excited to partner with Prime Video and TNT Sports to collaborate on fan-engagement concepts that drive story lines in our sport and innovation from a production perspective," Brian Herbst, NASCAR senior vice president of media and productions, said in a press release. "Having head-to-head driver matchups for each one of TNT's NASCAR Cup Series races will add a compelling fan-engagement element across media platforms like TNT, Bleacher Report, House of Highlights and NASCAR digital platforms."

All Cup Series drivers are eligible for the three seeding races -- run directly before the tournament begins. The top 32 from those races will qualify for the in-season tournament, with seeding determined by best finish in those races. Tiebreakers are next-best finish, followed by season points position.

The specific races for the in-season tournament are not yet known.

Once the bracket is set, the tournament will feature five rounds of head-to-head racing, with the higher-finishing driver advancing until a winner and the accompanying $1 million are rewarded.

Denny Hamlin deserves some credit. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver and co-owner of 23XI Racing pitched the idea of an in-season Nascar tournament , and that idea just came into fruition.

Nascar on Monday announced the creation of a new in-season, five-race tournament, which will debut in 2025. The new tournament will coincide with TNT and Amazon Amazon Prime’s Nascar slate. The winner of the tournament will receive $1 million.

“With the launch of our new media rights partnerships in 2025, we were excited to partner with Prime Video and TNT Sports to collaborate on fan engagement concepts that drive storylines in our sport and innovation from a production perspective,” Brian Herbst, Nascar’s senior vice president of media and productions, said in a statement. “The idea of an in-season tournament has been discussed within the Nascar industry and as we started to focus on adding promotional elements that drive interest throughout the season, we were excited by the opportunity to leverage the marketing weight of Amazon and TNT Sports to bring this concept to life.”

The seeding for the tournament will take place during Prime’s final three events. The top-32 drivers during those events will be eligible for the three-race tournament during TNT's part of the schedule. The 2025 Cup Series schedule has not been announced yet. The seeding will be based on best finish in the three races, and tiebreakers will be determined by a driver’s second-best finish in that stretch and overall points earned to that point in the season.

“It’s never been a better time to be a fan of motorsports, and this new first-ever in-season tournament will bring a new competitive dynamic to Nascar’s summer race weekends,” Craig Barry, executive vice president and chief content officer, TNT Sports, said.

For Amazon, the in-season tournament is a boost to its Nascar debut.

“We’re excited to be part of Nascar’s first in-season tournament next season,” Charlie Neiman, Prime Video’s head of sports partnerships, said. “This tournament will showcase the league’s ability to drive innovation and engage fans with increased competition during a key part of the Nascar schedule.”

TNT’s races will also stream on the B/R Sports Add-On on Max.

Last week, Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced he will serve as an analyst for both of Nascar’s new broadcast partners. Prime and TNT inked a deal with Nascar through the 2031 season.

Tennessee softball hosts first round of NCAA regional. Here's how to score tickets to see Lady Vols

business plan for sports tournament

Softball fans have the chance to see the Lady Vols make history Friday after the team earned the highest NCAA tournament seeding in program history Sunday as the No. 3 national seed .

Now the big question for those fans, if they didn't plan ahead, is how to score tickets.

The Lady Vols (40-10) have won  back-to-back SEC regular-season championships and will host both the NCAA regional and super regional, should they advance.

Tennessee will host Dayton, Miami (Ohio) and Virginia in a double-elimination regional at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. The Lady Vols play Dayton (33-19) at 2:30 p.m. Friday, and Miami (48-7) and Virginia (32-18) play in the first game at noon Friday. The elimination game will be the last game on Saturday and the championship will be on Sunday.

A limited of walk-up tickets will be available

There will be a limited number of standing room only tickets available for walkups before each game, according to Assistant Director of Strategic Communications Shane Switzer. Walk-up ticket sales start one hour prior to first pitch, the UT Athletics website states.

Otherwise, you will have to try your luck on a secondary market website. Seat Geek, Ticketmaster, StubHub and TicketCity all show tickets available for Friday's game.

MBS Golf Tournament

Inaugural MBS Golf Tournament

The inaugural MBS Golf Tournament, held at the Penobscot Valley Country Club on May 2, proved a resounding success, with eighteen teams participating in the scramble. Spearheaded by nineteen students enrolled in Dr. Nick Swim ‘s capstone class for the Sport Management major, the event showcased their prowess in event planning and execution.

“The class considered various event ideas but ultimately chose a golf tournament for its multifaceted nature,” Dr. Swim says. “This type of event allows students to delve into budgeting, sponsorship, marketing, and day-of operations—essential sport management skills.”

Divided into four groups, students undertook distinct responsibilities, from sponsorship and marketing to event operations and logistics. Jordyn Barry, a double major in Marketing and Sport Management, relished the hands-on experience. “We were completely in charge, putting the knowledge we had learned to use in this real-world situation,” she says.

Andrew Varipatis, part of the marketing team, underscores the importance of attention to detail, citing collaboration with MBS staff to ensure seamless execution. “My main takeaway from this class was that it teaches you never to overlook the smallest things,” Andrew says. “Everyone’s initial thoughts were based on the big things – like the prizes and food. Getting into the weeds of the tournament helped us pay attention to often overlooked areas, such as day-of organization, ensuring sponsors are getting what we promised, and how payments can be processed efficiently in a chaotic space.”

Dr. Swim was most impressed by the student’s ability to be adaptable. “Anyone who works in events will tell you that nothing will go exactly as planned. But the students were able to adapt to the challenges and run a successful event.”

Seniors Andrew and Jordyn found fulfillment in witnessing their hard work culminate on tournament day. The event’s $6,000 proceeds will bolster professional development initiatives, student travel, and volunteer opportunities within the Sport Management major, fostering growth and networking opportunities within the Maine sports community and beyond.
