SMU’s M.S. in sport management (M.S.S.M.) degree is designed for the individual who has a passion for the business of sport and aspires to hold a senior management position in the billion-dollar sports industry. Developed collaboratively by the Cox School of Business and the Simmons School of Education and Human Development, the full-time, one-year M.S.S.M. program is led and taught by professionals with extensive experience in a variety of sport segments, including professional leagues and teams, sport law, media and broadcasting, marketing and sponsorship, facilities, and ticket sales and service. The primary student audience includes business graduates, graduates of sport management programs and professionals working in the world of sport.

The program’s unique features address the needs of working professionals:

  • Students enter as part of a cohort in the fall term of an academic year.
  • All classes are taught in the evening on Monday – Thursday and sometimes on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Students are trained in evidence-based practices associated with sport management.
  • Eight of the courses are part of the top-ranking Cox School of Business’ M.B.A. curriculum.
  • Nine of the courses are taught through the Simmons School of Education and Human Development.
  • The 200-hour summer internship serves as a capstone to the program.

Curriculum and Term Sequencing

Because the M.S.S.M. program has an abbreviated academic term (seven weeks rather than the traditional 16 weeks) and because nearly half of the program’s classes are offered through the Cox School of Business, the credit-hour load requirements for the M.S.S.M. program are different from those of other Simmons School programs.

The M.S.S.M. program has two seven-week modules in each of the fall and spring terms, and two credit hours are earned by 24 classroom contact hours in each seven-week module. Each classroom contact hour generally requires a minimum of two to three hours of advance preparation time on the part of the student. The M.S.S.M. course sequence requires that students enroll in 16 credit hours in the fall term (comprising two modules) and 17 credit hours in the spring term (two modules); a student must be enrolled in at least 9 credit hours in a spring or fall term to have full-time academic status. M.S.S.M. students are allowed to transfer up to four credit hours (equivalent to 2 two-credit M.S.S.M. courses) from other institutions provided (1) the institutions are accredited by AACSB International, (2) course grades are B- or better, (3) the courses were completed within the three years prior to matriculation to Simmons, and (4) the courses were not credited toward a previous degree.

A maximum of 44 credits may be applied toward the academic requirements of the degree. Additional courses are limited to two Cox electives and one Simmons elective.

Note : Course sequencing for fall and spring modules is subject to change.

Admission Requirements

Students are admitted to the M.S.S.M. program during the fall term only and, subject to exceptions, the spring term. The highly selective process follows the admission standards of the Cox School of Business M.S.M. program. The M.S.S.M. admissions committee seeks a diverse group of candidates demonstrating the following attributes:

  • Significant professional and life experiences, particularly in the sports or allied-sports industries.
  • Strong academic capabilities, leadership potential, and interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Personal qualities such as maturity, integrity, self-confidence and motivation.
  • A strong commitment to learning and achievement.

Preferred applicants typically have extensive sport management internship experiences, full-time work experience and a strong undergraduate record. The program is continuing its test-optional admissions policy for Fall 2024 applicants. Applicants are required to submit the following items for admission consideration:

  • A completed application form ( www.smu.edu/MSSportManagement ) and fee.
  • A résumé.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
  • Two letters of recommendation.
  • A TOEFEL/IELTS score report for international students.
  • Optional : An official GMAT or GRE score report

Although the Simmons School and the Cox School are not obligated to accept any transfer credit, in certain cases coursework may be transferred when entering the program, thereby reducing the number of credit hours that must be taken at SMU for the M.S.S.M. degree. Up to four credits in coursework can be considered for transfer provided the coursework aligns with equivalent M.S.S.M. courses, such that 2 hours of transfer credit come from a sport management course and 2 hours of transfer credit come from a business course. For complete details, students should contact the M.S.S.M. office.

What Is a Sports Management Degree: Finding Your Career Path

Young male sports manager discusses business strategies with male colleagues.

The global sport market is expected to be valued at over $623 billion by 2027. 1 It’s a diverse field that includes a wide range of career options, from directing community sporting leagues to managing professional athletes.

A sport management degree can equip you with the combination of practical sports knowledge and business skills you need to land your dream job in the sport industry. However, there are many different sport management degree programs, so finding the best fit can be a challenge.

This article will explore how you can find the right higher education sport management degree program for your career goals.

Assessing your career goals in sport management

Before you can find the right sport management degree program, you need to know what you want to get out of it. If you’re just beginning to explore a career in sport management, start by considering your strengths and interests. If you enjoy event planning and have strong organizational skills, you may want to consider becoming a sport event coordinator. If you have strong financial and analytical skills, you may want to work as a financial analyst for a professional sports team. 2

To be effective, your goals should be SMART: 2

  • S pecific, rather than vague or general
  • M easurable, so you’ll know when you’ve achieved them
  • A chievable, so you won’t lose motivation
  • R elevant, to help you get where you want to go
  • T ime-bound, to create a sense of urgency

Types of sport management degree programs

A sport management degree is a college or university credential that provides a broad curriculum in coursework and skills related to law, public relations, business, marketing, finance, and management in the sport industry. 3 You can choose from the following types of degree programs in sport management:

Bachelor’s degree in sport management

A bachelor’s degree in sport management is typically a four-year program. It includes general education requirements such as English, math, science, and history, as well as specialized sport management classes. These classes cover topics such as sport policy, marketing, and law. You’ll also learn communication, problem-solving, and project-planning skills. 3

Master’s degree in sport management

A master’s degree in sport management is an advanced degree that can usually be completed in two years. All of your coursework will be focused on multidisciplinary skills related to sport management. Some universities offer a Master of Science or Master of Arts in Sport Management, while others offer a concentration in sport management as part of a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. 3

A master's program may include internship opportunities and can help you stand out in a competitive field.

Doctorate degree in sport management

With a doctorate degree in sport management, you can work in high-level positions with major sport teams or in academia. You’ll conduct research on various aspects of sport management and gain a deep understanding of core issues. 3

Curriculum and course offerings

When you’re comparing sport management programs, look carefully at the specific courses each one offers. A good program should offer a broad foundation in many areas of sport management, such as organizational behavior, marketing, finance, and law.

Some programs also offer you opportunities to engage in independent study so that you can customize your education. If you know you’re interested in a particular area of sport management, such as facilities management, make sure that the program you’re considering offers the appropriate coursework.

Internship and practical experience opportunities

Although sport management is a thriving, growing field, it can also be competitive. An internship can give you practical, hands-on experience that can set you apart and provide connections that will benefit your career. 4

During your internship, you’ll work with established professionals on their daily work or special projects. You may be able to get an internship in a specialty you’re interested in, such as athlete training or sport law. 5

An internship can expose you to a variety of roles and help you develop a relationship with a mentor. Establishing a personal connection with a mentor who can offer career guidance and direction will benefit you even if you end up working for another organization. 6

Flexibility of online vs. on-campus programs

Many universities offer degrees both online and in-person. Online degrees provide a high degree of flexibility and convenience that works well if you have work or family obligations while you’re studying. Online programs also offer you the opportunity to earn a degree from a university outside of your geographic region and learn from global experts. 7

With online programs, you can usually learn at your own pace. You can schedule your studying when you have free time or when you’re able to concentrate best. Online learning allows you to work ahead when you need to so you won’t fall behind if you have a busy period. 8

You’ll almost always save money by choosing an online degree. Online programs eliminate many costs associated with attending classes in person, such as transportation and on-campus housing. Beyond these costs, however, many universities charge lower tuition for online programs. 8

However, there are some situations where in-person learning may be the best option for studying sport management. Studying on campus will give you more opportunities for face-to-face interactions and internships. You might also find it easier to stay on track if you have the built-in accountability of attending class at specific times. 8

Earning a construction management certificate online allows you to advance your career without relocating or, in many cases, taking time off work. Many of our top-ranked programs allow students to choose their own learning pace.

Still, despite the flexibility that online classes afford, they aren’t necessarily the right choice for every student. Ask yourself these questions before committing to any program.

  • What’s my learning style? Asynchronous classes allow you to complete assignments on your own time, but they require you to stay organized and motivated. If you thrive with peer and instructor interaction, opt for an in-person or synchronous online course.
  • How much time can I dedicate to studying? Many programs on our list offer part-time and full-time options, enabling you to balance other commitments. However, part-time programs take longer to complete.
  • What can I afford? Certificate programs require fewer credits than a full degree, and they typically cost less. However, they may be ineligible for federal student aid and veterans’ benefits. Research funding options specific to your program.

When choosing among construction management certificate programs, consider each provider’s reputation. All of the programs on our list come from institutionally accredited colleges and universities. Accreditation indicates that a school meets high standards related to financial management, student outcomes and faculty.

Through the accreditation process, schools undergo review by a third-party accrediting body approved by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Federal student aid only applies to students at accredited colleges. Many colleges only accept transfer credits from accredited schools, and credentialing organizations may not recognize degrees from unaccredited institutions.

To confirm a school’s accreditation status, check CHEA’s directory .

Individual programs and departments can also earn programmatic accreditation. Professional organizations develop industry standards as benchmarks for a program’s curriculum, staff and student success, but its importance varies by industry. The American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) accredits construction management degree programs . ACCE generally does not apply to certificates, but ACCE has certified LSU Online’s program.

Some of our top-ranked programs design their curriculums to prepare students for professional licensing exams. While this does not equate to accreditation, it implies adherence to industry standards.

If you already work in the construction industry, completing a construction management certificate can equip you with leadership and business skills to move into higher-paying roles. These programs can also help you bridge the gap from related disciplines into construction.

Different programs suit different goals, though, so be sure to thoroughly research the admission requirements and curriculums, and consider the factors below.

Consider Your Future Goals

The programs on our list vary in their scope, academic rigor and duration. Before committing to a program, explore the following considerations.

  • Degree potential . Some of the programs on our list offer credit that can apply toward an associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree. Others only provide continuing education credits, which you can use toward professional certifications. Consider your current academic standing and degree goals to find a suitable program.
  • Specialization . What aspects of construction management intrigue you? If you want to pursue a career in green building, for example, look for programs that feature relevant electives. Other certificates might emphasize inspection, project management techniques or upper-management skills.
  • Duration . How quickly do you want to enter the workforce? Short-term programs enable you to cover the material quickly, but they might not offer broad or in-depth curriculums. A more intensive program requires a longer commitment, but might help you break into the industry or start a specialized career.

Know Your Budget and Financing Options

Certificates provide a less expensive way to access higher-paying careers. Total tuition for the programs on our list falls between $3,100 and $9,500, averaging about $5,300. Some schools offer discounts if you pay for the entire program in one lump sum. However, that total cost can be prohibitive, and in most cases, you can pay as you enroll in each course.

Before committing to a program, though, confirm the available financial aid options. Not all programs qualify for federal student aid or GI Bill® funding, but some do. And some schools, like DCTC, offer scholarships and work-study arrangements. Additionally, programs like SDSU’s help unemployed students pay for their education through federal partnerships.

What is the best certification for a construction manager?

The right choice depends on your educational goals and career aspirations. In general, construction managers benefit from certificate programs emphasizing project management, leadership, business skills and law.

Which course is best for construction management?

Construction project management certificates prepare learners with courses covering construction materials, scheduling, costs and estimating, project management, construction law and green building.

How long does it take to learn construction management?

Construction management typically requires on-the-job training, but you can earn a construction management certificate in as little as five months. Most programs take one to two years.

Can you make a lot of money in construction management?

Construction managers make higher-than-average salaries. In May 2022, these professionals reported earning a median annual wage of $101,480, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics .

DII Management Council supports new academic standard for 4-year undergrad transfers

Members approves new women’s lacrosse regional alignment, field hockey access ratio model.

The Division II Management Council this week supported emergency legislation that would eliminate Division II's year-in-residence requirement for undergraduate student-athletes transferring between four-year schools and implement new academic standards for immediate eligibility.

The Division II Executive Board will review the proposal, recommended by the Division II Academic Requirements Committee, at its April 23 meeting.

If adopted, transfer student-athletes must meet certain academic transfer standards to be immediately eligible for competition. The proposal has an immediate effective date, so student-athletes who have transferred during the 2023-24 academic year would be immediately eligible if the new academic transfer standards are met. Current legislation requires undergraduate transfer student-athletes from four-year schools to serve a year in residence after transferring to become eligible for competition, unless the student-athlete meets a transfer exception.

Additionally, student-athletes who do not meet the new academic transfer standards can regain eligibility after they have completed their initial full-time term of enrollment at their new school and have met all applicable progress-toward-degree requirements.

Championships

The Management Council approved a new regional alignment in women's lacrosse to distribute teams more evenly in each region, enhance how automatic qualifiers are spread out among the regions and minimize travel distance for teams. The new alignment includes 32 teams in the Atlantic region, 29 in the East, 27 in the Midwest and 24 in the South.

Additionally, the council approved a model for the Division II Field Hockey Championship in which bids would be allocated annually based on an access ratio that accounts for sports sponsorship. The model, effective for the 2024 championship, is similar to the process used for the Division II baseball, women's soccer, and men's and women's tennis championships. Based on current sports sponsorship numbers, this would result in a distribution of five bids from the Atlantic region (two automatic qualifiers, one each from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and South Atlantic Conference, plus three at-large teams) and three bids from the East region (one automatic qualifier from the Northeast-10 Conference, plus two at-large teams). The Division II Field Hockey Committee made the recommendation after the bracket expanded from six to eight teams, aiming to provide more equitable access to the championship.

The Management Council supported budget requests for the 2024-25 fiscal year recommended by the Division II Strategic Planning and Finance Committee. The approved budget provides enhancements, including increased per diem and additional championships enhancements.  The Executive Board will review the recommendation next week.

Women's wrestling

The Management Council sponsored a proposal for the 2025 Convention to add women's wrestling as a National Collegiate championship, beginning in winter 2026.

The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics made the recommendation to all three divisions after women's wrestling, part of the Emerging Sports for Women program, surpassed the 40-school threshold to be considered for NCAA championship status.

Other action

  • The Management Council approved noncontroversial legislation to amend and eliminate several recruiting rules to provide more autonomy to schools and simplify the application. Some amendments include eliminating the restriction on the number of meals an institution may provide a prospective student-athlete during an unofficial visit, amending the local sports club legislation to eliminate the restriction on basketball and the 100-mile radius requirement, and eliminating the recruiting calendars.
  • The Management Council approved a policy to establish a two-year expedited provisional membership process .

The most wonderful time of the golf season reaches its conclusion Sunday as the beauty of April surrounds Augusta National Golf Club. The 2024 Masters started as a star-studded affair with a loaded field featuring the best golfers in the world and Scottie Scheffler entering as the favorite. Scheffler held that same position entering Round 4 and has only increased his advantage as the Masters rolls ot a finish.

Scheffler is looking to become the 10th golfer in Masters history to win two green jackets in a three-year span, and given his level of play over the last two years, no one is doubting he can accomplish his goal. Should he do so, he would pick up a $3.6 million winner's check out of a record  2024 Masters prize money allotment -- a $20 million purse .

While five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods set a new record at Augusta National by making the weekend in his 24th consecutive playing of the tournament, he completely ejected on Saturday with his worst score in a major championship round. Tiger rebounded Sunday while playing his 100th round at Augusta National  but nevertheless signed for a 16 over, his worst score to par at a major and the second-worst round overall across his professional career. (At least he wasn't among the major stars who missed the cut .)

Be sure to follow Masters live leaderboard coverage throughout the final round on Sunday for scores, analysis and highlights. It's a perfect second-screen complement to the Masters viewing experience provided to you by CBS.

While attending the Masters is a dream for many, simply being able to watch golf on the grandest stage of them all is an incredible treat each year, and we here at CBS Sports are thrilled to bring you wall-to-wall coverage of the Masters throughout this week.

CBS Sports offers extensive, week-long coverage across all its platforms with its traditional 18-hole broadcast coverage beginning with the third round on Saturday and final-round action on Sunday. Jim Nantz, in his 39th consecutive year covering the Masters, serves as host for the 37th time. 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman joins Nantz as the lead analyst at the Masters for the second time. Nantz and Immelman link up with CBS Sports' incredible golf team, including on-course reporter Dottie Pepper and the legendary Verne Lundquist, who will be calling his final Masters.

Enough talking about it. Here's how you can watch as much Masters as possible on Sunday. Be sure to stick with CBS Sports for live coverage throughout and download the CBS Sports app  to watch Masters Live on your mobile device.
