University of Washington Foster School of Business

Applicants to the University of Washington (UW) Foster School of Business must provide two average-length essays but have the option of submitting two more, allowing candidates to cover more of what they feel are the most compelling parts of their candidacy. The school’s first required essay focuses on applicants’ desire to attend business school with respect to their career plans and professional needs, and the second tasks candidates with sharing their personal definition of resilience and examples of times when they have exhibited it themselves. The first optional essay provides a rather open-ended opportunity to discuss anything significant, whether positive or problematic, while the second optional essay deals exclusively with the weighty issue of encouraging and supporting diversity, inclusion, and equity. Read on for our full analysis of UW Foster’s 2023–2024 application essay questions.

University of Washington Foster School of Business Essay Analysis, 2023–2024

Essay 1: post-mba plans (750 words maximum) – tell us your ideas about what lies ahead for you in your career. what are the gaps or deficiencies currently preventing you from pursuing these potential career paths how do you plan to use your time in the foster mba program to fill these gaps and advance your career.

The overall essay the school is essentially requesting here covers many of the primary topics covered in a traditional personal statement—what your goals are, why you need an MBA to attain them, and why you need the degree from the school you are applying to—though the wording is obviously different in Foster’s prompt. To access our extensive guidance on how to craft such an essay, download a free copy of the mbaMission Personal Statement Guide, which explains ways of approaching these subjects effectively and offers several illustrative sample essays.

Essay 2: Personal Resilience Essay (500 words maximum) – Resilience is one of the most important values of a successful Foster student. Tell us about what resilience means to you and share some of the ways that you have demonstrated resilience in overcoming personal or professional challenges. How do you anticipate showing resilience during your time as an MBA candidate?

With this prompt, the admissions committee wants to know how you act, react, and think when things do not go according to plan and you are required to reassess, pivot, and persevere. Foster clearly knows that many of life’s greatest successes require one to “try, try again,” as the expression goes, and that this attitude is necessary to gain and accomplish the most, not just in business school but also in the world after graduation. This essay is your opportunity to reassure the admissions committee that you possess the powerful combination of flexibility, tenacity, and drive that will position you to realize your goals.

Foster does not stipulate that your example(s) for this essay must be either personal or  professional, so explore all your career, family, and community life experiences for instances that you believe are particularly significant and illustrative of your adaptable and irrepressible spirit. Either directly or indirectly, you must clarify for the admissions committee how you personally define and perceive of “resilience.” What kinds of qualities does a resilient person possess? How does such a person act during trying moments? What motivations keep them moving forward when they encounter setbacks? Offering your portrayal of someone who exhibits resilience will give the admissions committee important insight into your goals and mind-set, so be sure to be honest, rather than trying to guess what you think the school might expect or want to hear. This part of the question has no definitively right or wrong answer—only sincere ones and insincere ones.

With respect to “showing resilience during your time as an MBA candidate,” the issue at hand is pretty straightforward. The admissions committee wants convincing that you are truly ready for the challenges of earning an MBA. The business school experience is rigorous and demanding, in more (and different) ways than many candidates expect, and enthusiasm can only take you so far.  Foster wants to know that you have truly thought through and are prepared for the journey you are about to undertake.

Challenges should often be viewed in a positive light—as inspiration to keep trying and sometimes even to aim higher than before. You want to convey in your essay that you are not easily deterred, explain why this is so, and reassure the admissions committee that you are ready to bring that spirit to Foster as an MBA student.

Essay 3: Optional essay (500 words maximum) – Include this essay if you have additional information you believe would be helpful to the admissions committee in considering your application.

Here is your opportunity—if needed—to address any lingering questions that an admissions officer might have about your candidacy, such as a low GRE or GMAT score, an unexplained gap in your work history, an unusual recommender choice, poor areas of academic performance, or a legal or disciplinary incident. Because Foster does not stipulate that this essay is strictly for explaining potentially problematic aspects of your profile, the door is open for you to share other types of stories and information, but do not simply try to fill this space because you fear that not doing so would somehow count against you. And however tempted you might be, this is not the place to reuse a strong essay you wrote for another school or to offer some anecdotes you were unable to include in your required essays.

If you truly feel that you must emphasize or share a key aspect of your profile that would render your application incomplete if omitted, write a very brief piece about it. Keep in mind that by submitting an optional essay, you are requiring the already overtaxed admissions readers to do additional work on your application, so avoid being overly verbose or sharing more information than is truly necessary. You must ensure that the admissions committee’s extra time and effort are truly warranted. If you feel you might have a reason to submit this additional essay, consider downloading a free copy of our mbaMission Optional Essays Guide , in which we offer detailed advice on when and how best to take advantage of the optional essay (along with multiple sample essays).

Essay 4: Optional Diversity, Equity & Inclusion essay (500 words maximum) – At the Foster School of Business, we embrace diversity as one of the foundations of both successful business strategy and a world-class educational experience. We share the University’s dedication to promoting the understanding and appreciation of human differences, and the constructive expression of ideas. We welcome you to share some of the ways you have practiced inclusion, promoted equity or supported the advancement of underrepresented groups.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are inarguably important, and ubiquitous, topics these days in business school essay questions, so we are not surprised to see that Foster asks its candidates to address them, though we are a bit surprised that the query is presented as an optional essay (and the second optional essay, at that). If you have something meaningful or impressive to offer in response to this prompt, we definitely encourage you to share it with the admissions committee, but on the flip side, do not feel obligated to write this optional essay for fear that not doing so will make you look insensitive or apathetic. You are far better off skipping this essay entirely than trying to force or embellish a weak story that will not ultimately contribute anything positive or compelling to your application.

The past few years have certainly offered a multitude of opportunities for people to “show up” for others who are different from them, such as by participating in or even organizing a protest or march, or by speaking up or stepping in when an individual was being harassed or marginalized in some way. Foster wants to know how you act on your values and ideals within this context, so you need to go beyond just sharing why you believe “practic[ing] inclusion, promot[ing] equity or support[ing] the advancement of underrepresented groups” is important and describe your actual behaviors and actions. Fully illustrating and exemplifying the “how” element is crucial for this essay to be its most effective. Because the school places no restrictions on the environment in which your experience(s) occurred, be sure to consider all the areas of your life (personal, community, professional) to uncover your strongest examples.

University of Washington Foster School of Business MBA Essay Tips and Deadlines [2022 – 2023]

University of Washington Foster School of Business MBA Essay Tips & Deadlines [2022 - 2023]

Are you seeking an MBA program with a strong record of job placement in the technology industry? Then the University of Washington Foster School of Business may make an excellent choice for you.

A full 45% of the class of 2021 joined the technology industry after graduation. Next in magnitude is the consulting industry with only 24% of graduates landing these roles. Functionally, graduates tend toward marketing/sales – 37% of the 2021 class, finance/accounting – 18% of the class, and consulting (including consulting roles outside of the consulting industry) – 22% of the class. Yes, Foster is a somewhat regional school since 64% of graduates stay in Washington State after graduation, but that also means that there is a strong local alumni network in Washington’s startup and technology ecosystem – think Amazon and Microsoft – where many of its alumni are concentrated.

University of Washington Foster School of Business application essays

Foster mba essay #1.

Tell us your ideas about what lies ahead for you in your career. What are the gaps or deficiencies currently preventing you from pursuing these potential career paths? How do you plan to use your time in the Foster MBA program to fill these gaps and advance your career? (750 words maximum)

This is a nice amount of space to explain what you’ve gained so far in your career and what you need to learn to reach your career goals. As with any goals essay , make sure to show the connection between your future goals and the career you have established thus far. At least half of this essay should discuss the gaps/deficiencies in your knowledge and skills and how Foster’s curriculum and activities will fill them.

Foster MBA essay #2

Tell us about an experience that inspired or confirmed your decision to pursue the MBA. (500 words maximum)

The experience that you share in this essay not only has to have inspired you to pursue the MBA, it needs to inspire the admissions committee to want to meet you! Experiences in which you have stepped out of your comfort zone to lead new initiatives and make exciting impacts will demonstrate that you have the potential to thrive at Foster and in your future career .

Foster MBA essay #3 (optional)

Include this essay if you have additional information you believe would be helpful to the admissions committee in considering your application. (500 words maximum)

Most people cannot be summarized in two essays. If that is the case for you, then you should consider submitting this additional, optional essay. Obviously, you can use this space to explain a gap provide context for a GMAT/GPA weakness, but if you do so, I recommend sharing some additional information to assuage any of the admissions committee’s concerns. For example, if your Verbal GMAT score is lower than you would have liked, you might consider sharing an example of your strong communication and presentation skills to counterbalance that weakness.

Foster MBA essay #4 (optional diversity, equality & inclusion)

At the Foster School of Business, we embrace diversity as one of the foundations of both successful business strategy and a world-class educational experience. We share the University’s dedication to promoting the understanding and appreciation of human differences, and the constructive expression of ideas. We welcome you to share some of the ways you have practiced inclusion, promoted equity or supported the advancement of underrepresented groups. (500 words maximum)

If no example stands out in your mind of how you have promoted diversity or inclusion, then make a few lists for yourself reflecting times when you:

  • Practiced inclusion – made your workplace, club, or group more hospitable to groups than were underrepresented.
  • Promoted equity – taken steps to reduce racial disparities.
  • Supported the advance of underrepresented groups. Participated in organizations or your workplace to encourage and support members of under-represented groups, encourage their success, and increase their numbers.  READ: 7 Simple Steps to Writing an Excellent Diversity Essay >>

Outline your work experience in reverse chronological order. Be sure to include company name, a brief description of the organization (or a web address), your job title, and detailed information about your responsibilities and achievements. Feel free to use up to three pages for your resume, and include all significant work experience since graduating from high school. Include educational background as well as your activities and community involvement [and noted elsewhere in the application: awards, honors, certificates or other forms of recognition (academic, community, military etc.) you have received].

This is one of my favorite parts of the Foster application. You cannot fit all of your achievements into your application essays or the little text boxes in the application, so go ahead and share details of your accomplishments in your resume . The three-page limit allows you to describe the challenges you overcame and impacts you made in each professional role and in the community.

Video Interview

All applicants will be asked to submit a video interview, and will receive an email within 3-4 business days after the application deadline to which they applied with instructions on recording the video interview. The video interview allows us to get to know you better and to assess your communication skills and your ability to think on your feet as we review your application and consider your candidacy. Once applicants receive the video interview invitation via e-mail, they will have approximately 4-6 days to complete this requirement. The email will provide instructions on recording the video interview. Applicants can test their video and sound before recording their video interview, answer practice video interview questions, and ask for technical support if needed within the video interview system. The email instructions will include the deadline to submit the video interview, and applicants must complete this requirement in order for their application to remain under review. The video interview must be submitted in order for the application to be reviewed. Applicants will be contacted if they are selected for an admissions interview later in the application review process.

A growing trend in MBA admissions is this addition of online automated video interviews to complement the picture an applicant presents of himself/herself in his/her written application. Questions are randomly generated from hundreds in a database and are not in any way linked to the content of your application. You may be asked to describe your strengths and weaknesses, for example, or tell about a recent project you initiated at work or even what you do in your free time. You will have 90 seconds to respond and can even press the space bar to stop recording if you finish your response in advance of that limit.

The purpose of the video exercise is, as Foster says, to see how you “think on your feet.” However, it also gives the Foster admissions committee a chance to assess your presence and delivery. The admissions office will be judging your ease of speech and personality more than they will be seeking signs of your drive or measuring your ambition during the video exercise. Since more employers are using video as a screening tool, Foster also wants to see how you will appear to a potential employer.

How the Foster interview works

Who is foster looking for, how can you prepare for your foster interview, what to do if you get a question you haven’t prepared an answer for.

UPDATE : This article was originally posted on March 9, 2020. It has been updated with 2023/24 information and tips below.

Located near the global headquarters of industry giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Starbucks, the UW Foster MBA is an increasingly popular choice for professionals looking to break into or get ahead in the tech industry.

However, with one of the highest job placement rates in the US, the competition to join Foster’s elite MBA is more difficult than ever.

That’s why we’ve prepared this guide to help you use your Foster admissions interview to stand out. We’ve rounded up not only our best tips but have also included sample interview questions to ensure you give your Foster interview your best shot.

Making sure you shine during your Foster interview is no easy task.

Foster interviews, since they are conducted by the admissions committee, tend to be highly focused on determining your fit with the Foster program . During the interview, the interviewer is also trying to gauge how solid your motivations for wanting to pursue an MBA are and how interested you seem in the Foster program.

Interviewers often ask many standard MBA interview questions, as well as questions designed to test just how collaborative you really are. You can also expect numerous follow-up questions.

Our clients who have interviewed with Foster in the past say that the interviewer was very friendly and demonstrated a genuine interest in their answers . Though questions do tend to focus on standard MBA interview questions, be ready for anything.

Who will interview you?

You will interview with a member of Foster’s admissions committee.

Will the interviewer have read my application?

The Foster interview is blind, meaning the interviewer will only have access to your CV. This means that you can repeat examples from your essays if you choose to.

How long will the Foster interview last?

About 45 minutes.

“The Foster MBA Program selects individuals with the highest potential for achievement in the management profession—those who have demonstrated the capacity for high-quality academic work, who possess strong written and verbal communication skills, and who will contribute to the diversity of the student body and the ranks of professional leaders.” Foster Admissions

Every year, Foster spends a significant amount of time reviewing applications in order to select members for its class of around 100 students. With a strong emphasis on diversity, there is no “typical” Foster student, yet the average admitted student does tend to have a 710 average GMAT score and 6 years of work experience.

Beyond the impressive statistics, though, Foster is looking for candidates who want to make a positive impact on the world through their careers. That’s why, in addition to strong academic performance (demonstrated through the GMAT and university grades), Foster seeks candidates who also excel at working in teams.

In their words, “ Here, students are chosen not only for work and life experience but also for their ability to transcend personal interests and contribute to the team. Those high standards pay off: the caliber of students in the program and their average five years of work experience enrich the learning for everyone .”

Though no interview is 100% predictable, Foster interviews do tend to center around a fairly standard list of MBA interview questions. As such, we have prepared some model questions below that previous candidates have received in their past Foster interviews.

SAMPLE FOSTER INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

The questions below are drawn from our clients’ interview reports, as well as from sites like clearadmit.com . Though these are not all the potential questions you could possibly receive during your Foster interview, preparing for these (and any follow-up questions you think you might be asked) should give you a very solid foundation for your interview.

STARTING UP QUESTIONS

  • Tell me about yourself. (Expect follow-up questions)
  • What do you do in your current job?
  • What is your greatest achievement in your current role?
  • Why did you choose your university?
  • What was your undergraduate experience like?
  • What are you passionate about outside of work?
  • What are your short-term and long-term career goals?
  • What do you think makes you a good fit for these goals?
  • Why do you want an MBA?
  • Why Foster?
  • What will you contribute to Foster?
  • What other schools have you applied to? If you get into all of them, how will you choose where to go?
  • What about Foster are you looking forward to the most?
  • Which clubs and activities do you plan to get involved in?
  • Have you visited campus? Spoken with alumni?
  • What do you think will be your biggest challenge at Foster?

LEADERSHIP & TEAMWORK

  • Tell me about a time when you didn’t get along with your team. What did you do?
  • Tell me about one instance when you disagreed with your boss and how you handled the situation
  • How do you explain leadership?
  • What is your leadership style?
  • Tell me about a time you were not a leader but worked on a team. What was your contribution?

MISCELLANEOUS BEHAVIORAL

  • How would your friends describe you?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • Tell me about a time you received feedback. How did you respond?
  • What is your most recent professional compliment?
  • What do the words determination and resilient mean to you? Could you share an example where you showed these characteristics?
  • What is the biggest risk you have ever taken at work?
  • Tell me about a time you set very high goals for yourself.
  • Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?
  • Is there anything you wish I had asked you?
  • Questions for me?

We have found that answering real interview questions on the spot is a much better means of preparation than reading lists of interview questions for most candidates.

We highly suggest you take a look at mock interview questions and sample interview responses before your interview .

Our MBA Resource Center has dozens of real interview mocks from UW Foster, as well as detailed guides to help you prepare for questions ranging from “Why our MBA program?” to “Tell us about a time you failed.”

foster video essay questions

If you’re still not quite confident with your interview skills, our interview experts can help you craft your answers or prepare you for the Washington Foster interview through mock interviews tailored to your profile.

Despite your most diligent preparation, you will almost always receive a question you had not prepared.

First, stay calm and take a deep breath . You have already made it this far in the process, and one question will not trip you up!

Second, make sure you directly answer the question the interviewer asked you. For example, if the interviewer asks you about a time you had to deal with a difficult manager, make sure to tell a story about a difficult manager and how you handled the situation.

If you’re having trouble thinking of an answer or an example to support your answer , however, take a drink of water to give yourself a few more minutes to think. If you really can’t think of an example from your personal or professional experience, you can use a hypothetical answer about how you would act in a certain situation.

Finally, assume that the interviewer is testing how you think on your feet and respond to questions you didn’t prepare in advance. Though your answer might not be as polished as if you’d had weeks to rehearse it, smile and confidently respond to show you can handle any question they throw at you.

Practice makes perfect!

You have stressed about every aspect of your MBA application, and now you are ready for your interview! With the right preparation, this can be your chance to shine and get a highly-coveted spot at an elite business school.

However, maybe you don’t know where to start in preparing, or maybe you tend to ramble on and lose focus during interviews. Maybe you’ve even downloaded sample questions and written out your answers. The problem is, when you try to apply these templates to your own story, it doesn’t quite work.

Our interview prep focuses on helping you determine how to present yourself during your MBA interview while using appropriate, impact-driven language without being artificial, or worse, robotic.

What are mba video interview questions/video essays.

MBA video interviews and MBA video essays are short, self-recorded videos where candidates answer questions given by the admission committee in a video instead of writing. This application component has simply been added to the admission process of some business schools; it does not replace any other written MBA admission essay or the final interview for admission.

It's also important to note that because this concept is relatively new in the MBA application process, business schools refer to it by different names. For example, Kellogg Business School and London Business School both call it a video essay, while INSEAD refers to it as Video Interview, and MIT refers to it as a Video Statement. Ultimately, these are all the same thing. The only thing that may vary is the format of the video essay.

There are two main types of MBA video essays:

This format asks candidates to record a short video answering a specific question or prompt given by the admission committee. The timeframe and questions or topics are usually provided beforehand, thus giving you more time to think through your answers and ensure that your video essay is of the best quality. Kellogg Business School

Kellogg business school  is one of the pioneers of the MBA video essay. This component was added to their already thorough application process in 2013 and is here to stay. Kellogg no longer publishes their admission statistics, but in previous years, the acceptance rate was roughly 20%, making it one of the most selective business schools in the world. To apply to Kellogg’s MBA programs, applicants must submit two written  MBA admission essays , and answer 3 MBA video essay questions.

Kellogg Business School's acceptance rate

The Kellogg MBA video essay comprises three essay prompts. Applicants have 20 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to answer each question. The first two questions are predefined, and the third question is usually randomized. It should be noted that this is subject to change. For example, not too long ago, the admissions committee was specifically asking students about their experience with COVID as a third question instead of using a random prompt. So, it is always best to verify the school’s website for the most up-to-date information.

My name is Angela Faye, and I am a corporate lawyer from New York City. I was born in Normandy, France, but I moved to the United States at the age of eighteen to attend university. I quickly fell in love with the melting pot of cultures found in New York and the different aspects of American culture. So, I decided to stay and make a life for myself here. I am a wife and mother to two beautiful children who look up to me and for whom I'd like to set a good example by doing what it takes to accomplish my goals. One of those goals is to open a law firm of my own, and I believe that the next step for me on my journey to making that happen is to gain more knowledge and experience in business administration and management. I aim to own and operate an affordable, sustainable clothing brand that caters to women of all sizes and body types. I have been working towards this goal for the past five years. I own a personal shopping business, and I have noticed how limited the options are for ethically made clothes, especially for women with different body shapes. In the past five years, I have taken the time to research and learn about the logistics of the clothing industry, study the market and begin gathering funds for this project. The next step for me is to gain even more knowledge about what it takes to successfully and ethically run a business while networking with some of the best business minds in the world. Based on my research, the best place for me to do that is at Kellogg business school. ","label":"Sample answer","title":"Sample answer"}]" code="tab3" template="BlogArticle">

This is the power that the main character of the sci-fi show Heroes possesses. This power allows you to learn and replicate the abilities of those in close proximity to you. This means that you would be able to learn a wide array of abilities, including flight, invisibility, and anything else that exists. To succeed, you need to be prepared and have multiple tools at your disposal. This superpower definitely gives you that. • What piece of technology could you not live without and why?
  • Who do you approach when you have a problem for advice and why?
  • What accomplishment are you really proud of?
  • What's the best piece of advice you have ever received?
  • If you were given a chance to meet anyone, current or historical, who would you meet and why?
  • What was the most interesting class you took at university?
  • How have you changed in the last five years?
  • What risk have you taken, and what did you learn?
  • What impact do you have on your co-workers?
  • What inspires you?

The  University of Toronto  is not only one of the best  universities of Ontario , but it attracts candidates from all over the world yearly. So it is not surprising that Rotman school of management is an increasingly popular choice for MBA hopefuls. To get into Rotman, you need to ace the MBA video interview/MBA admission essay.

The university uses the  Kira talent  platform, which uses both video and text. Applicants will answer two different questions on video and one question in writing. For the video portion of this MBA video interview, candidates will hear the question, have 30 seconds to think, and then 90 seconds to answer. The questions used during the interview will vary, but we looked at a few past prompts so that we can share sample answers and questions for you to practice with.

I decided to cut back on my hours at the tutoring center, and I enlisted the help of a different student so that I could delegate some tasks and have more time to study. That experience taught me a lot about time management. ","label":"Sample answer","title":"Sample answer"}]" code="tab5" template="BlogArticle">

I would much rather be good and on time than perfect and late. Nothing is perfect. We can try to get as close to perfect as possible, but there comes the point where chasing perfection becomes a waste of time, and time is far too valuable to be wasted. If something is good and on time, then it will stand out, and you may even have a chance to improve on it and \"perfect\" it while it is already operational. For example, recently, I was assigned to design the logo for a new client, and when the deadline came, I found that the product was not perfect. I wanted to fix it up a little more, but I realized that it would be best to give my clients something good on time and get their feedback so that we can work together to perfect it. Here are a 10 additional MBA video essay questions from Rotman that you can use to practice:

  • Who is your mentor outside your family, and why?
  • Apart from money, what else would keep you in your current organization?
  • What is one good habit, and what is one bad habit of yours?
  • If you had to delete all apps but three from my phone, which ones would I keep and why?
  • If you got a chance, what subject would you teach?
  • Out of the four seasons, which do you like the most and why?
  • What is one good habit and one bad habit that you have?
  • If you had no financial downsides from quitting your job, what job would you prefer to be doing?
  • Which of the following aspects of your life are you most in touch with: emotional, spiritual, or physical?
  • If you could have anyone over for dinner, who would it be?

Yale University  is an Ivy League institution with a worldwide reputation and a highly selective admissions process. The video interview component for Yale School of Management uses a set of randomized, previously recorded questions. This means that applicants will likely not have the same set of questions in one interview cycle. The school's website states that the questions asked are similar to typical interview questions. In other words, while the video essay may not have "trick questions," it will have some tricky ones. One tip we can give you is to  prepare for your MBA interview  early. This will not only improve your chances of doing well during your MBA interview, but it will also help you with your performance on this MBA video essay component.

Yale video essay comprises three questions. Applicants will have 20 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to answer the first two questions. For the third question, applicants will have 30 seconds of preparation time and 90 seconds to answer. Let's take a look at some of the prompts that have been used for Yale MBA video essays in the past:

I have wanted to pursue a Master's in Business Administration for a few years now, but I needed to accomplish a few things before embarking on this journey. First, I needed to get a few years of practical experience after spending most of my undergraduate years learning business theories. Secondly, I wanted enough savings to cover most of the tuition fees and expenses. I plan on giving my studies my full attention for the next two years, and I find that the best way to do that is to pace yourself and remove as many distractions as possible. Having enough money to ensure that my tuition is paid gives me more choices and allows me to focus on that instead of anything else. As a business owner, I often find myself in a position where I have to make difficult decisions or handle challenging situations. Recently, I had to decide whether it was time to let go of our office building and become a fully remote company or for a hybrid model for my employees. Everyone, from the senior management staff to the part-workers, had a different opinion. In the end, even though I listened to what they had to say, I had to compare what they were saying to what the numbers showed. Our statistics showed that most of the team was actually performing better from home and that we would save considerable money if we kept working online and spent some money on communication networks that would allow us to communicate better as a team. \"Without Arts, an education can not be accomplished.\" I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. People learn in different ways, and many of those ways include various pieces of art. For example, I am a visual learner. So Whenever a presentation, poster, or textbook includes images, I tend to remember it better. Furthermore, because artists and the world of arts, in general, are a big part of our culture, one cannot claim to be educated about the world without at least understanding some of it. ","label":"Sample answer","title":"Sample answer"}]" code="tab9" template="BlogArticle">

Here are a 10 additional Yale SOM MBA video essay questions that you can use to practice:

  • What is the biggest challenge facing leaders today?
  • Tell us about a creative solution you designed
  • Please respond to the following statement: "Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand." Do you agree or disagree? why?
  • Do you agree or disagree with the notion that the chief executive's first priority should be a profit for shareholders?
  • What accomplishment are you most proud of?
  • Tell us about a shortcut you and a team could have taken, but decided not to
  • If we asked your colleagues about your weaknesses and strengths, what would they say ?
  • How will you resolve a conflict with your future classmates at the program?
  • Tell us about a difficult decision and how you handled it?
  • "The People who we remember most are the people who break the rules." Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

MBA video essays should not be underestimated. While the questions and format used by the business schools are not designed to trick you, they are definitely intended to challenge you. This means that it gives you a chance to rise to the challenge and the admissions committee a chance to find out which candidates took the time to research and prepare for this application component. If you're reading this blog, then you have already taken a step in the right direction by looking at common video essay prompts and sample answers. To prepare further, we recommend using the questions we listed to practice. Remember that these video essays are timed, so familiarize yourself with the time limits by using a timer while practicing. You should also take the time to set up and test your equipment before your interview, to make sure it is stable and that your background is appropriate. If you truly want to maximize your chances of success, you should consider working with an  MBA essay consultant  or participating in  MBA mock interviews.

The level of competition will depend on the specific school you're applying to, but MBA programs are generally quite selective.

This is a relatively new application component used by a few business schools. Essentially, they are short videos during which candidates answer essay questions given by the admission committee.

The admission committee typically provides questions or prompts for your video essay. You should verify the admissions information of the school you are applying to, as some schools make the questions to the video essay available in advance.

No, not all of them do. Video essays and Video interviews are still a relatively new practice. They are only used by a few business schools in the world, but the practice is rising in popularity, so it is best to be prepared.

There are a few schools around the globe that require MBA video essays, including Yale, Kellogg, MIT, Rotman, London Business School, INSEAD, etc.

Yes. Most business schools ask for both written essays and video essays. Some schools also include a written essay in their MBA video interview process, like Rotman, for example.

The video essay serves a similar purpose as the  MBA personal statement  or  MBA diversity essay . If you meet the standards set by the admission committee, you may still get called for an in-person or virtual interview.

You can prepare by planning or structuring your answers in advance, timing yourself when you rehearse, participating in mock interviews, and investing in  MBA admissions consulting.

MS in Entrepreneurship Admissions FAQs: Essays and video

MS in Entrepreneurship student

How can I make sure that my essays are compelling?

Essay 1 serves to assess your understanding of entrepreneurial leadership and how you have been successful at leading yourself and leading others in both your personal and professional life. Leadership skills make up a strong component of the program and are of course very important as an entrepreneur.

Essay 2 serves to assess your experience/knowledge/familiarity with entrepreneurship at this point in your life. Ask yourself: Do you come from a family of entrepreneurs? Are you involved in entrepreneurial organizations and activities? Have you started a company or nonprofit? Is there an idea that you’ve been working on—and that you’d like to see take off? Is there an idea that you’re thinking about? What is it about you that makes you want to become an entrepreneur?

As you write your essays, remember:

  • Be yourself. There isn’t a “right answer” to any of these the questions. Be genuine.
  • Answer every part of the question clearly and provide some detail. Give us some background information, numbers, names, etc. if appropriate.
  • Brief answers are generally insufficient. Give us some real content. Yes, put in the time.

How can I submit a great video?

Applicants are asked to submit a short 90 second video describing a transformative experience in your life that fundamentally changed you. What was the experience and how did it change you?

To submit a great video:

  • Feel free to be creative. This is a great opportunity for you to show us who you are—beyond what we read on paper.
  • Make sure we can hear you. Be careful of background noises (like traffic) that could hinder the clarity of your video’s sound.
  • Let us see you. While there is no right or wrong format to this video, we do prefer to see you at some point in the video (as opposed to all graphics).
  • Again, be genuine. Produce a video that reflects who you are. We welcome introverts as much as extroverts.

We encourage all applicants to connect with us prior to submitting an application. This will help you make a more informed decision on whether our program is the right fit for you. There are a number of ways to connect: Attend an information session either online or in person , make an appointment to chat with us one-on-one, and/or schedule a class visit to experience the program firsthand. foster video essay questions

Foster School of Business, University of Washington, USA

Foster School of Business offers a 21-month full-time MBA program in Seattle. For the fall intake, 2021 Foster has kept its essay prompts the same as last year. Following are the deadlines, essay prompts and its debrief:

Essay Debrief

Essay 1: Post-MBA Plans (750 words maximum) Tell us your ideas about what lies ahead for you in your career. What are the gaps or deficiencies currently preventing you from pursuing these potential career paths? How do you plan to use your time in the Foster MBA program to fill these gaps and advance your career? Let’s paraphrase the above question: What are your short-term goals? What are your long-term goals? Why MBA? Why Foster? In the first part of the essay question – Tell us your ideas about what lies ahead for you in your career , Foster is trying to ask you about your short-term and long-term goals. This is a very straightforward question and one you should be adept at answering. In the second part – What are the gaps or deficiencies currently preventing you from pursuing these potential career paths? Foster is cleverly asking you about your decision to pursue an MBA. But instead of asking you directly, Foster wants to know why do you think that pursuing an MBA will help you get your dream job? Do you understand what skill gaps will be filled by an MBA degree that will help you achieve your career goals? And finally – How do you plan to use your time in the Foster MBA program to fill these gaps and advance your career? Foster now would like to understand why have you chosen its MBA program. What makes Foster’s MBA program a good fit for you? How will you involve yourself and make the best of your time at Foster in order to achieve your career goals? Of course, I have oversimplified by paraphrasing the questions here. And you have to be careful to write sentences aligned with the phrasing of the original essay question. Needless to say that all the three parts of the question need to be aligned with one another. You have ample word limit here so make good use of it.

Essay 2: Inspiring Experience Essay (500 words maximum) Tell us about an experience that inspired or confirmed your decision to pursue the MBA. Let us break this question down: Why MBA now? Explain with an example. It is clear what Foster expects from you in this essay question. You will have to quote an experience that has reinforced your decision to pursue an MBA. While they have not clearly mentioned but as usual sticking to a professional experience is always better. You have a good word limit, so explain the scenario properly and then dive into why this particular incident has inspired you to pursue an MBA.

Apart from the letter of motivation above Foster application requires:
