So, with that in mind, it should be easy to backtrack the timeline of a trend to learn more about it when a brand joins in on the fun. One glaring exception is the Duolingo Owl — that's one up-to-date bird.

McDonalds' "I understood the assignment" era on Twitter began in the second half of 2021. So did  Starbucks '. With a calculation based on conjecture, the trend can be traced back to the beginning of 2021. We looked to Know Your Meme for confirmation, and it turns out we were right. This is what high school teachers meant when they said that we'd use math after graduating.

This particular phrase has garnered extreme attention across all social media platforms. On TikTok , videos submitted under the "I understood the assignment" hashtag have received more than 600 million views; an excess of 30,000 posts wear it on Instagram . But what does it mean? How was the "I understood the assignment" trend created? In March 2021, a Twitter user @thering26 posted stills of Uma Thurman in numerous acting roles. Even celebrities hopped on the trend. Taylor Swift used it to promote "All Too Well" (via YouTube ) and basically immortalized the phrase. There are currently around 250 million views on the "the assignment" hashtag on TikTok . It also led to the creation of another relatable sound that remixes Tay Money's song with Reese Witherspoon in "Legally Blonde" saying, " Actually, I wasn't aware that we had an assignment ." And that's how one meme took over the internet.

These Actors Definitely Understood the Assignment

Sometimes, there are just actors who understand their roles so completely that fans always know they can trust them. So when a meme started to go around pointing out who “understood” the assignment, the results varied. From pointing out that these actors always shine no matter the quality of the movie to pointing out specific kinds of roles they always flock to and understand, it was just a way for fans to share love for their favorites.

M any of you probably know SparkNotes from back in your school or college days. You got confused by an assigned book, you were running late for class, or you were writing an essay right before the deadline (again!), and you needed to get to grips with the plot and main themes. SparkNotes is probably the most well-known literature resource in the world, summarizing countless books to help you study alongside the source material.

But something that you probably weren’t aware of is that SparkNotes is ridiculously good at the social media game. It has an account on X (formerly Twitter) that posts some great memes about literature. Our nerdy sides love them so much that we couldn’t help but share some of the best ones with you. Scroll down for a refresher about why literature is so awesome and why being geeky is cool!

Bored Panda got in touch with the member of the SparkNotes team running its X account, Courtney Gorter, and she was kind enough to tell us about literary memes and reigniting people’s passion for reading. Meanwhile, we also reached out to Lisa McLendon, Ph.D. , from the University of Kansas, who is the William Allen White Professor of Journalism and Mass Communications, as well as the Coordinator at the Bremner Editing Center . She told us about truly great student essays. Read on for both of our interviews.

Gorter, an Associate Content Strategy Manager at SparkNotes, explained to Bored Panda that the secret behind creating such great literary memes comes from reading a ton and spending a lot of time on X (aka Twitter).

We were curious to get her opinion on what quality literary memes have in common. “To me, a sign of a good literary meme is that people who have read the book think it’s spot-on, and people who haven’t read the book are curious enough that they decide to read it!” she said.

Some people feel like they don’t have enough spare time to read. Others, however, are dealing with extremely shortened attention spans , a huge problem these days. Gorter shared her thoughts about inspiring people to read more.

“For people who are looking to reignite their passion for literature, sometimes it’s all in how you think about it. Get rid of the idea that audiobooks don’t count; give yourself permission to stop reading a book you’re not enjoying; read several books at once if you get bored easily,” the SparkNotes team member told Bored Panda.

“I know so many people who got back into reading after a long dry spell, and the reason they came back is always different—maybe they discovered ebooks or audiobooks and it changed everything, or maybe they watched a TV or film adaptation, and wanted to read the series, or maybe (just maybe!) they saw a literary meme on Twitter that piqued their interest.”

According to Gorter, the best approach here is to meet people “where they are,” instead of forcing them or moralizing them.

“Some people are never going to be big readers, either because they don’t have time or it simply doesn’t interest them, and I think that’s okay! The great thing about literature is that it’s such a vast world, and there’s no right or wrong way to engage with it.”

Meanwhile, Professor McLendon , from the University of Kansas, echoed very similar thoughts on helping people (re)discover the love of reading.

“I’d love to see people reading more books: novels, nonfiction, whatever. I think one thing that could help, and this is something I’m encouraging my students to do over the winter break, is just read something YOU want to read for the fun of it,” she shared her thoughts with Bored Panda.

“By college, it seems that students tend to associate reading with homework, not pleasure, and if they can re-capture the feeling of reading for pleasure, then they may read more. Going along with that, people need to know it’s OK, when they’re reading for pleasure, to quit a book that they’re not into. There are so many great books in the world; don’t waste time on one you’re not enjoying!”

We also asked the professor for her thoughts on truly great student essays and how they can wow academic staff.

“Truly great student essays don’t just follow the directions (though they do that); they sparkle in both content and writing. That is, great essays approach the topic from an inventive or creative perspective and support the main idea with clear, specific information and examples,” McLendon said.

“Great essays are written in concise, direct prose with a mix of sentence types and lengths to keep readers engaged, and they transition clearly from one point to the next. To achieve greatness, students need to think, then plan, then write, then revise,” she shared.

“It’s a process that most people can’t successfully complete the night before an assignment is due, and if a writer skimps on the ‘think’ stage—by, for example, using SparkNotes instead of reading the original and thinking through it—chances are the essay won’t be great,” the professor added that reading just a summary, in isolation, isn’t enough.

SparkNotes was initially launched way back in 1999 and has, over the years, become a household name. Meanwhile, the project launched its account on X (when it was still called Twitter, which most of us probably prefer) in April 2008.

The project has an extensive presence on social media. At the time of writing, SparkNotes had nearly 352k followers on X and 295k fans on Facebook. It also has 310k literature-hungry folks following it on Instagram and nearly 77k fans over on TikTok. All the more ways to spread funny and geeky literary memes!

Full disclosure: literature may have been (read: definitely was ) our favorite class of all time, so these memes are right up our alley.

Whatever you might have used SparkNotes summaries for in the past, the company itself points out that it stands firmly against cheating and plagiarism. While there’s nothing new under the sun, it’s important to be open about where you got your ideas from. Citing sources and crediting ideas—these are fundamental values whether you’re in a literature class or doing a degree in journalism.

“We're here to help you learn, not to help you cheat. Our literature guides are meant to be read along with the books they analyze. They are not intended to be copied on tests or papers (aka plagiarized),” SparkNotes explains its stance on people copying their summaries directly on the project’s website.

SparkNotes points out that you can avoid plagiarizing them by citing the words and ideas that came from their site or books. You can also rephrase these ideas in your own words, interpreting things from your own perspective.

Transparency, clarity, and honesty are worth more than their weight in gold when it comes to literature, journalism, historical analyses, and writing (endless) essays. 

The point is to use what SparkNotes offers as a supplement, not an alternative to reading the source material itself. We all need a little help understanding exactly what’s going on in a book sometimes when we’re “confuzzled.”

There’s no shame in asking someone for advice… or doing lots of Googling to check if we’re not alone in being lost. 

SparkNotes offers over 500 guides for English literature and Shakespeare, as well as many other guides for other subjects, including history, math, and biology.

They also have a whole bunch of quizzes to help you learn the info that you need way better before that big test. They have a vested interest in helping everyone learn in a more efficient way.

Memes are, essentially, ideas, attitudes, jokes, and images that we share with other people. So the more something is shared, the more successful it is at being a meme, by definition.

In our experience, there are a few main things that elevate a meme from something ‘meh’ to a viral sensation. It all comes down to relatability, humor, format, and consistency. 

Something that the SparkNotes team members in charge of creating and sharing all of these memes do so well is that they know their audience. It’s people who enjoy literature, reading, and books in general.

Naturally, they then focus on crafting memes that suit this particular audience. They make it relatable for lit geeks. But someone who’s not into literature may feel a lot of the references going over their head. But that's all right. Aside from dad jokes, there are very few categories of comedy that try to appeal to absolutely everyone.

Another aspect that the SparkNotes X account nails completely is adding copious amounts of humor to their posts. Memes do not have to be funny to be relatable or to go viral… but comedy certainly helps. When an image makes you feel good, you want to share it with the people you care about to make them feel the same way that you do.

In terms of format, you want your meme to be easy to read. We’re all overloaded with pics, memes, posts, and news stories on social media, so images only have a mere moment to grab our attention. If there’s way too much text or the font’s hard to understand, internet users might just decide to skip reading the thing altogether.

Meanwhile, if you plan on entertaining your followers with memes, it’s a good idea to be consistent with your posting. It doesn’t mean that you have to spam your feed with dozens of memes each day, though. But it means carving out a reputation as someone who’s consistent and trustworthy in their posting schedule.

Francisco Alvarez set for major rehab step as Mets fade

Francisco Alvarez has taken a crucial step towards making his return to the Mets.

The New York Mets have struggled to stay afloat in the NL East, already trailing the first-place Philadelphia Phillies by 15 games. But perhaps the return of catcher Francisco Alvarez is the exact spark the Mets need for a turnaround.

Alvarez is set to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton on Thursday. He is expected to catch seven innings and comes after he took batting practice on the field Sunday, via Jorge Castillo of ESPN.

Alvarez is working his way back from a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb that he suffered back in mid-April. Given a six-to-eight week injury return timeline after surgery, Tuesday was the five-week mark.

When he begins his rehab assignment, president of baseball operations David Stearns wants to see how Alvarez handles being behind the plate. With the serious injury being to Alvarez's hand, Stearns wants to ensure his backstop can physically catch baseballs alongside everyday activities.

“You can simulate what this is going to be like from the hitting perspective in the cage with velo machines, on the field with BP,” Stearns said. “The added complication here when you're a catcher wit this injury is how it's going to feel to receive a baseball. That's the hurdle and we won't really know until he gets out there, but everything is going really well so far.”

While Alvarez has plenty of hurdles to jump over, he is taking the requisite steps to get back to New York. Mets fans will need to wait a little long, but manager Carlos Mendoza is pleased with the catcher's progress.

“Everything is moving in the right direction, and the fact that he's now ready to go in games, that's a good sign for us,” Mendoza said.

At 22-32, it's hard to imagine Francisco Alvarez singlehandedly bringing the Mets back into contention. However, he'll provide a strong bat in the lineup and immaculate defense behind the plate. Even if the Mets aren't in playoff contention in 2024, Alvarez is a crucial part of the team's future. Having him back with the team in New York will only help his development.

What Francisco Alvarez provides Mets 

Signed by the Mets as an international free agent out of Venezuela in 2018, it didn't take long for the catcher to make a name for himself. By 2021, he was already the top prospect in New York's organization and the 48th-best in all of baseball, via MLB Pipeline. One year later, Alvarez was called up for his MLB debut.

In just a five-game cup of coffee, Alvarez hit .167 with a home run. He got a much longer leash in 2023, appearing in 123 games. That season, the backstop hit .209 with 25 home runs and 63 RBI. His batting average certainly wasn't pretty, but New York desperately needed the offense. Alvarez ranked third on the team in home runs and fourth in RBI.

The backstop was hitting .236 to begin the 2024 campaign, with a home run and eight RBI over his first 16 games. While the batting average is improving, the Mets are hopeful he becomes a more consistent hitter. Still, they won't mind having 25+ home runs and 50+ RBI in their lineup.

Soon that will be a reality, as Francisco Alvarez works his way back from major surgery. He'll first need to work out the kinks in Double-A. But assuming his rehab assignment goes well, the Mets will have their catcher of the present and future in the lineup sooner rather than later.

Dwyane Wade is most known for his basketball skills, but off the court, the three-time NBA champion is also a dad.

Wade shares two children with ex-wife Siovaughn Funches: Zaire, 22, and Zaya, 17, as well as a son, Xavier, 10, with Aja Metoyer. In 2018, Wade and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union , welcomed a daughter, Kaavia James, 5. Wade is also the legal guardian of his nephew, Dahveon Morris, 21.

Both Wade and Union have been open about what it's like raising a blended family. In 2017, Union revealed that Wade and his kids changed her entire perspective on what she wanted for her future .

"I never wanted kids," she told PEOPLE. "Then I became a stepmom, and there was no place I'd rather be than with them."

After welcoming Kaavia, Union penned her first children's book , which she described to PEOPLE as a "love letter to every non-traditional family, blended families, that no matter how you became a new family, it is beautiful and real."

As for the couple's parenting style, Wade told PEOPLE in 2021 that he really tries to " get to know " his kids. "I try to meet them where they're at, and I don't try to always bring them to where I want them to be," he explained.

The athlete also thinks it's important to " lead with love ."

"I want to be somebody who my kids always understand, that can adapt, and that is willing to grow and is willing to learn," he told PEOPLE in 2021. "Also, someone that they can come to for advice about this, that or the third, and that will not be judgmental about it."

In April 2023, Wade appeared on an episode of Headliners , where he was asked about Florida politicians who are fans of his but are against LGBTQ rights.

"That's another reason why I don't live in that state," the former Miami Heat player said about relocating his family to California. "A lot of people don't know that. I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions. My family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there ."

Dahveon Morris , 21

In 2011, Wade was awarded full custody of his nephew, Dahveon Morris. Dahveon and his cousin Zaire are very close and even played basketball together at Sierra Canyon School . In April 2019, Wade and Union sent their nephew off to prom in style, with the Cheaper by the Dozen actress posting about the occasion on Instagram . "PROM!!!!!" she wrote alongside a family picture.

Zaire Wade , 22

On Feb. 4, 2002, Wade welcomed his first child, Zaire Wade , with his high school sweetheart and wife at the time, Funches. Wade was just 20 years old when he first became a dad .

Zaire has been following in his father's footsteps since he was young with a dream of making it to the NBA. In high school, he played basketball alongside Lebron James ' son, Bronny James, at the Sierra Canyon School , a prominent Los Angeles-area school known for its success on the court.

While inheriting some of his dad's athleticism has been helpful, bearing his last name has come with a lot of pressure and expectations. Luckily, Zaire has his father's support , although Wade has noted that he is merely in the "passenger seat" of his son's basketball career.

"He's in the driver's seat," Wade told PEOPLE in 2020. "If basketball is the ultimate goal, then I'm just trying to help him along the way, understanding there's so many different ways to get to this goal." He continued, "There's so many different ways to get to the NBA or to get that path ... So, [I'm] just trying to help him navigate through expectations that the world has put on him, and that he puts on himself because of his last name."

In October 2021, Zaire achieved his goal when he was drafted by the Salt Lake City Stars as the No. 10 pick.

"I think I just want people to know — first of all, I'm extremely blessed to have this opportunity from the Stars to even want to take interest in me," Zaire told the S alt Lake Tribune at the time. "I know I'm a young guy to develop."

In addition to basketball, Zaire is also passionate about fashion and has his own apparel company, YnG DnA. In July 2021, the young entrepreneur teamed up with his dad to create a pride collection benefitting Athlete Ally, a leading national non-profit working at the intersection of sport and LGBTQI+ equality. "We wanted to do something to try and show our support to my sister Zaya and the whole community," Zaire told PEOPLE.

In February 2023, Wade gave Zaire a shout-out on Instagram in honor of his 21st birthday.

"Watching you grow up and evolve into your own man has been the highlight of my life. Happy birthday @Zaire, got you forever! 🖤," he captioned a montage of images with his firstborn.

Zaya Wade , 17

Zaya Wade was born on May 29, 2007, to Wade and Funches. The pair split that same year, and in 2011, Wade was granted full custody of Zaire and Zaya.

The athlete later reflected on the decision to fight for full custody and the difficulties of being a single parent during an appearance on Showtime's All the Smoke podcast.

"When I decided to go for custody, I really didn't have a lot of examples," he explained. "I really didn't have too many people I could reach out to to say, 'Bro, how's the process?' Or give me confidence that I even can stand a chance ... It was uncharted waters, but it was all about just being in my kids' lives." He added, "But once I got that opportunity to be there more, I think it was beneficial for both of us — I needed them and they needed me."

In February 2020, Zaya came out as transgender and she received tons of support from her family .

Wade opened up about the moment Zaya first came out during an interview with Ellen DeGeneres . "Zaya, our 12-year-old, came home and said, 'Hey, so I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward, I'm ready to live my truth. And I want to be referenced as she and her. I'd love for you guys to call me Zaya,' " he said.

The former NBA player later elaborated on that "landmark moment" with his daughter.

"I came home and I just remember my child being scared to talk to me , like hiding in my wife's arm in a chair," Wade said during an event in Ojai, California. "I think I'm this dad that's like, 'Hey, come and tell me anything! I'm a cool dad.' And so I had to check myself."

He continued: "In a lot of work as parents — and as people — what we do is we put our fears and everything on our kids. And I guess I was doing that. So I had to go look myself in the mirror and ask myself, "What is it about my masculinity that has my child afraid?' "

Union also made a statement on Twitter in February 2020, writing: "Meet Zaya. She's compassionate, loving, whip-smart and we are so proud of her. It's OK to listen to, love & respect your children exactly as they are. Love and light good people."

That same month, Wade got candid about loving and supporting all of his children exactly as they are. "As I'm raising [Zaya], as I'm raising my kids, you just try to put them in the best situations to be able to succeed in life," he told PEOPLE exclusively. "How I do that, and how me and my wife decide to do that, may be different than another family, but we want them to know there's always unconditional love, that it will always be support."

Zaya sharing her story marked the beginning of the Union-Wade family's public LGBTQ advocacy , for which they were honored as part of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2020.

In May 2022, Zaya teamed up with her stepmom to participate in the Dove Self-Esteem Project. Speaking with PEOPLE about the project, Zaya and Union discussed unrealistic beauty standards and the dark side of social media.

"As a trans person, once I came out, there was a lot of hateful comments about how I should grow my hair out long or fit into a certain version of femininity, even though that's not true at all," Zaya shared. "That kind of advice is just trying to break you, but don't let it."

Union added, "We try to stress character, compassion, love, acceptance and joy. That hopefully radiates from the inside out. When it comes to how she moves through the world, we try to stress there is no one way to be a woman or to be feminine."

Despite all the love she's received from her family and fans, there are still some trolls who leave negative comments on Zaya's social media. In September 2022, Wade and Union made the decision to restrict comments on Zaya's Instagram page to protect her from any negativity. "For Zaya's mental health and privacy we've decided not to allow the hate into her comments," the protective dad wrote on Twitter. "Thank you for wanting to spread and show her love."

In November 2022, Wade responded after his ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, alleged that the former NBA player was trying to "profit" from Zaya's name and gender change. "I've received a social media post about me forcing our 15 year old child to be someone she's not and to do something against her will," Wade wrote on Instagram . "These are serious and harmful allegations that have hurt our children."

Wade added that he's "very disappointed" that Funches-Wade "continuously find[s] ways of centering herself and HER needs, without regard to her children."

On Nov. 28, 2022, Wade filed a second petition to legally change Zaya's name and gender after Funches-Wade objected to the first filing, which took place in August 2022. According to documents obtained by PEOPLE, the pro athlete called Funches-Wade's objection "libelous" and "nonsensical."

"While it certainly would have been preferable for Zaya's mother to be supportive of this important part of Zaya's journey, Zaya should not be forced to put her life on hold while she waits for Siohvaughn to acknowledge and accept her truth," the documents read.

In February 2023, Zaya was officially granted an official name change and assignment of gender, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

A day later, Wade gave Zaya a shout-out at the NAACP Image Awards as he accepted the President's Award alongside Union.

"Zaya, as your father, all I've wanted to do is get it right. I've sat back and watched how gracefully you've taken on the public scrutiny," the former basketball pro said during the couple's acceptance speech. In March 2023, Zaya made her runway debut during Miu Miu's Paris Fashion Week show. Both Wade and Union were sitting front row for the big moment.

The same month, she opened up about her relationship with Union to DAZED magazine, and shared some of the beauty lessons the actress has taught her .

"It's about being you and expressing yourself the way you want to. She tries to teach me that beauty standards are arbitrary and that they don't mean anything," Zaya explained. "They don't matter anymore; what people thought was the standard is not. And just that being myself is the best technique out there."

In an interview published in August 2023, Union and Wade said that Zaya played a part in their decision to move from Florida to California.

“There are a lot of reasons we decided California was best for our family and finding a community for Zaya was a big part of that," Wade said. "We felt that California was a place that would allow her to blossom and grow. She’s going to be a Junior in high school now and she’s been able to be accepted and become her here.”

Before welcoming their daughter, Union revealed that she had struggled for years with infertility and failed IVF treatments in her memoir We're Going to Need More Wine.

"I have had eight or nine miscarriages," Union wrote . "For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant — I've either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle."

She added that through it all, she and Wade remained "bursting with love and ready to do anything to meet the child we've both dreamed of."

In a 2021 essay for Time , Union opened up more about the couple's decision to turn to surrogacy , admitting that at first, she was against the idea.

"I was not ready to do that," she wrote in the piece. "I wanted the experience of being pregnant. To watch my body expand and shift to accommodate this miracle inside me." The Bring It On star also shared that she was prepared to take a drug called Lupron, which would give her a 30% chance of bringing a baby to term, but could potentially harm her own body. However, her husband was able to change her mind.

"As much as we want this baby, I want you," she recalled Wade telling her. "We've lost too much in our relationship for me to be okay with encouraging you to do one more thing to your body and your soul."

In May 2020, Union released a children's book, Welcome to the Party , inspired by the couple's daughter Kaavia and their blended family.

"I wanted to create a love letter to my daughter to let her know that even though her entry into our family was a bit non-traditional, we love her and wanted her," Union told PEOPLE. "And she is celebrated."

These days, 5-year-old Kaavia is well-known online for her meme-able facial expressions, which have earned her the nickname "Shady Baby."

" She looks just like Dad , but I'd like to think the attitude is from me," Union told PEOPLE in 2019. "She will stare into your soul and tell you about yourself through her eyes."

Union followed up the success of her first children's book by collaborating on another one with her husband titled Shady Baby . Speaking about the book, Union and Wade explained how Kaavia's nickname first came about. "Since she was born, you could always tell what she was thinking just by looking at her," they explained in a press release. "Thus, her Shady Baby persona was born!"

In November 2023, Wade and Union threw Kaavia a princess-themed birthday party to celebrate their daughter turning 5. The little girl changed her outfit not once but three times — dressing up as her favorite Disney characters Belle, Tiana and Ariel.
