Even though the highest total you scored on any one test date was 1000, Kenyon College will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. You can raise your composite score from 1000 to 1400 in this example.

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and Kenyon College forms your Superscore, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Your application readers will only see that one score.

Kenyon College ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, Kenyon College likely doesn't have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.

Average ACT: 31

The average ACT score at Kenyon College is 31. This score makes Kenyon College Strongly Competitive for ACT scores.

The 25th percentile ACT score is 31, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 34.

Even though Kenyon College likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 31 or below, you'll have a very hard time getting in, unless you have something else very impressive in your application. There are so many applicants scoring 31 and above that a 31 will look academically weak.

ACT Score Sending Policy

If you're taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.

Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.

This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 34 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you're happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

However, in our research, we found that Kenyon College does in fact offer an ACT superscore policy . To quote their Admissions Office:

Superscoring is powerful to your testing strategy, and you need to make sure you plan your testing accordingly. Of all the scores that Kenyon College receives, your application readers will consider your highest section scores across all ACT test dates you submit .

For example, say you submit the following 4 test scores:

Even though the highest ACT composite you scored on any one test date was 20, Kenyon College will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. You can raise your composite score from 20 to 32 in this example.

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and Kenyon College forms your Superscore, you can take the ACT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Your application readers will only see that one score.

Therefore, if your ACT score is currently below a 34, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the ACT and retaking it . You have a very good chance of raising your score, which will significantly boost your chances of getting in.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. The SAT used to also have an optional Essay section, but since June 2021, this has been discontinued unless you are taking the test as part of school-day testing in a few states. Because of this, no school requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing section, but some schools do recommend certain students submit their results if they have them.

Kenyon College considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration. You don't need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you're applying to may require it.

Final Admissions Verdict

Because this school is very selective, strong academic scores are critical to improving your chances of admission . If you're able to score a 1490 SAT or a 34 ACT or above, you'll have a very strong chance at getting in.

The competition challenges students to write about aspects of japanese culture, with a personal connection.

MELVILLE , N.Y.,  April 23, 2024  – Highlighting its commitment to empowering students and supporting education, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, proudly sponsored the 19th Annual Japan Center Essay Competition Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 20th, at Stony Brook University.

The essay competition, organized by the Japan Center at Stony Brook, honors students for work that demonstrates their awareness and understanding of the Japanese culture. The competition aims to inspire the students to think creatively and critically about their lives in relating experiences to aspects of Japanese culture, to broaden their horizons and promote global citizenship through the writing of thought-provoking essays.

"We are proud to partner with Canon U.S.A. on the essay competition, providing students with the opportunity to develop a better understanding of cultural activities related to Japan," said Dr. Iwao Ojima, the President of Japan Center at Stony Brook University. “We congratulate the winners and every participant for their great work."

233 high school and college students submitted essays for the competition. Contestants were asked to discuss one or more aspects of Japan including art, culture, tradition, values, philosophy, history, society, politics, business, and technology in relation to their personal experiences, views, and/or future goals. A panel of qualified judges selected the winners, who received awards including a Canon product.

At the tender age of nine, both my hands clutching the glass of water I’d carefully poured, I made my way over to the table where my grandmother, or Halmoni as we say in Korean, sat before a war zone of cards strewn across the table. I was not prepared for the ultimate betrayal that would occur in the following moments. My Halmoni whipped out her trump card, which she’d taken from the deck while my back was turned to pour the water she’d purposely requested. As if in slow motion, I saw her raise her hand, pause for a second, and then proceed to slam it on the table. Just like that, with a single card, the game was over and Halmoni was victorious.

I owe much of what made my childhood unique to a very powerful figure in my life: my Halmoni. She was born and raised in Seoul, and much of her influence came from her own upbringing and traditional values. She’d teach me different Korean phrases and their meanings, she’d take me out to eat all sorts of Asian delicacies, and she’d show me all the rituals we had to practice for Lunar New Year and other holidays. But the one thing that remains a pillar of our relationship isn't our food, or our language, or our customs. It is a little stack of tiny red plastic cards.

Earn Academic Credit While Interning

Enhance an internship—and earn credit—by enrolling in an EXPL course.

EXPL 205 (summer) and 206 (semester) courses provide the ability to receive academic credit connected to your internship experience. EXPL courses must be taken in conjunction with the internship and upon completion of the course, the student will receive 0.13 units of credit regardless of which section is taken (205 or 206). Students may not receive more than 0.52 units of credit and can take the course a maximum of four times.  

EXPL 205 (summer) has a 240-hour internship requirement. All students electing to do a summer internship for .13 units of credit will be part of a cohort of students assigned to one shared faculty member who will act as the EXPL faculty advisor. Students will attend one meeting at the end of April – prior to their summer internship – to receive instructions from the EXPL faculty advisor. Students will also be expected to participate in up to two summer conference calls with the EXPL cohort to discuss experiences and explore connections to academic/professional goals; attend scheduled meetings with the EXPL faculty advisor; complete the hour requirement; and meet all reflective requirements for faculty review. Students will also be required to submit a resume to the Career Development Office, but students can upload the resume in the registration process or at a later time.

Requirements

• Complete the EXPL Registration Form to sign up for EXPL 205.*
• Attend the April cohort class with the EXPL faculty advisor. During this class, students will review how their internship connects with academic and/or career goals, discuss learning goals, and review expectations for reflection requirements.*
• Attend mid-summer conference call(s) facilitated by the EXPL faculty advisor.
• Complete any additional summer-time reflections as assigned by the EXPL faculty advisor.
• Successfully complete a minimum of 240 internship hours.
• Write and submit a final reflective essay.

*A secured internship is not required for these steps.

Reflection Paper Considerations

• Due at the end of September
• A minimum of 1200 words and no more than 5 pages in length
• To include the following: a. Introduction b. Description of work experience/projects/duties/site c. Internship connection to academic focus d. Academic insights gained from the internship e. Overall internship evaluation-reflection of personal and professional learning and growth f. Conclusion

EXPL 206 (semester) has a 60-hour internship requirement (4 hours/week minimum). Students interested in gaining .13 units of credit for an internship conducted over the semester need to consult with a faculty member to request that they serve as faculty of record for the course. Once a faculty member agrees, they act as the student’s EXPL faculty advisor and will talk with the student periodically throughout the term about the student’s experience and its connection to academic and professional goals. Students will also be required to submit a resume to the Career Development Office, but students can upload the resume during the registration process or at a later time. Students will also complete the required hours, and meet reflective requirements for faculty review.

• Confirm a faculty member to serve as your EXPL faculty advisor.
• Complete the  EXPL Registration Form  to sign up for EXPL 206.
• Schedule a conversation with your EXPL faculty advisor prior to the start of the internship to review how this internship connects with academic and/or career goals, discuss learning goals, and to review expectations for reflection requirements.
• Successfully complete a minimum of 60 internship hours.
• How did this internship fit (or not) into your respective classes?
• What was the most challenging aspect?
