Marketing Personal Statement Example
My passion for marketing started at a young age, inspired by the popular TV show Mad Men and its portrayal of the advertising industry. The show sparked my interest in the art of persuasion and the power of effective communication, and I have since been motivated to learn more about the field.
During my high school years at Chew Valley School in Bath, I was the captain of the rugby team, where I developed valuable leadership skills and the ability to work well under pressure. These skills have translated well into my work experience, where I spent two summers at McDonald’s, where I learned how to be task-focused and improve my time management skills.
In terms of academics, I have taken A-Levels in English, Biology, and Chemistry. Although these subjects are not directly related to marketing, they have helped me to develop critical thinking and analytical skills, which I believe will be beneficial in my future marketing career.
My long-term goal is to become a marketing manager and to make a meaningful impact on the industry. I am fascinated by the various aspects of marketing, including market research, branding, advertising, and promotions. I am eager to learn more about these topics and to gain practical experience through internships and real-world projects. I am also interested in writing a marketing book and sharing my knowledge and insights with others who are interested in the field.
In my free time, I enjoy playing rugby and reading books. I am also an avid traveller and have visited several countries, which has broadened my perspective and exposed me to different cultures and marketing strategies. These experiences have further fuelled my interest in marketing and have given me a deeper appreciation for the global impact of the industry.
I believe that a marketing course at a UK university will provide me with the education, skills, and network to pursue my dream career. I am confident that I have the determination and motivation to succeed in the programme, and I look forward to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

Undergraduate Marketing Personal Statement Example
Fueled by my fervour for marketing and backed by my hands-on experience and educational foundation, I am the ideal candidate to soar in this programme.
I first became interested in marketing while reading Seth Godin’s book “Purple Cow”. The book spoke to me on a personal level and helped me understand the importance of creativity and innovation in marketing. I was inspired by Godin’s approach to marketing, which emphasizes the need to stand out and be unique in a crowded market. This resonated with me, and I knew then that I wanted to pursue a career in marketing.
My work experience has also been a significant factor in shaping my interest in marketing. During my time at Cantell School, I worked part-time as a digital marketing coordinator for a secondary school web portal. In this role, I was responsible for creating and executing marketing campaigns, analyzing data, and maintaining a strong online presence for the school. This experience provided me with hands-on experience in the field of marketing and further solidified my interest in the subject.
In addition to my work experience, I have also been highly involved in various extracurricular activities, including playing basketball for my school’s team. I believe that my athletic background has taught me valuable skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership, which will be useful in my future marketing career. Furthermore, my A-level studies in English, Media, and Finance have given me a strong foundation in the areas of communication, analysis, and finance, which are essential skills in marketing.
My travels around the world during my gap year have also had a profound impact on my interest in marketing. I had the opportunity to meet and interact with many people, including marketing professionals, who shared their experiences and insights into the industry. This has given me a deeper appreciation for the dynamic and ever-changing nature of marketing and has motivated me to pursue a career in this field.
Philip Kotler, another marketing thought leader, has also had a significant impact on my motivation to pursue a career in marketing. I admire his approach to marketing, which emphasizes the importance of understanding customer needs and designing strategies that meet those needs. This has inspired me to approach marketing from a customer-centric perspective and to always prioritize the needs of my target audience.
Ultimately, my goal is to become a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) and make a significant impact in the marketing industry. I am confident that with a degree in marketing from your esteemed university, I will be well-equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to achieve this goal.
I am highly motivated and passionate about pursuing a degree in marketing. I believe that my work experience, academic background, and extracurricular activities make me a strong candidate for your programme. I look forward to the opportunity to further develop my skills and knowledge in marketing at your esteemed university.
Postgraduate Marketing Personal Statement Example
With over three years of working experience in the marketing sector, I believe I have gained the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue advanced studies in the field.
I have been working at Grey International Marketing Agency in London, where I have been involved in a variety of international marketing campaigns for both UK and international brands. This experience has provided me with a unique opportunity to work with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds and to understand the complexities of the global market. I have learned the importance of market research, consumer behaviour analysis, and creative branding strategies in developing effective marketing plans.
As a driven and ambitious individual, I am constantly seeking new challenges and opportunities to grow. My interest in digital marketing has led me to specialize in this field, and I am now proficient in social media marketing, search engine optimization, and email marketing. I am also skilled in data analytics and use it to measure the effectiveness of my marketing campaigns and make data-driven decisions.
Additionally, my experience as a basketball player in the Baker Early College team in Oregon, USA, has taught me the importance of teamwork and leadership. These skills are transferable to the marketing sector and have allowed me to work effectively with my colleagues and clients. I have also learned the importance of adaptability and resilience, especially when faced with unexpected challenges and obstacles.
I am confident that the postgraduate marketing course at your university will provide me with the advanced knowledge and practical skills to further my career and achieve my long-term goal of starting my marketing agency. I am particularly drawn to your university’s reputation for academic excellence and its commitment to providing students with real-world experiences. I am eager to learn from the experienced faculty and to engage with my peers from diverse cultural backgrounds.
I am passionate about marketing and believe that this postgraduate course will provide me with the foundation I need to make a significant impact in the industry. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my background and qualifications with you, and I look forward to hearing back from you soon.
Thank you for your consideration.

Strategic Marketing Postgraduate Personal Statement
Sample Strategic Marketing Postgraduate Personal Statement
Having pursued the study of Global Business Management, I have found that my core interests lie in the field of Marketing. The MSc in Strategic Marketing offered at Imperial College Business School, I believe, offers the most comprehensive and cutting edge introduction to the deeper field. Having investigated a number of courses in preparation for applying, it is the focus on new developments, such as digital and social media, combined with an in-depth focus on the analytical aspects of marketing as it applies to real case studies that make this the right course for me.
My degree in Global Business Management gave me an excellent overview of the broader field of business administration. Specific courses throughout this degree also introduced me to the fundamentals of marketing and allowed me to undertake project work within the field. The course’s global focus, coupled with my own experiences of living, working and studying in multiple countries, also offered an international perspective on business that will allow me to adopt an international approach to marketing throughout postgraduate study. Studying in the UK presents specific challenges for those us for whom English is not our first language. My track record at Regent’s College and my previous experience at Ashbourne College also demonstrate that I have obtained the necessary language and study skills to overcome these.
In addition to studying within the UK, I have also worked within a voluntary role with Age Concern, which has helped me to hone my administrative skills within an employment context. Building on skills I gained through a previous administrative role at Verso M, a Russian construction company, these two positions not only offered a chance to implement some of my theoretical knowledge of business processes in a practical context but also honed transferable skills in time management, teamwork and communication that will all prove useful throughout postgraduate study.
I have always shown a similar flair for both teamwork and leadership throughout my previous study and have made sure to become involved with extra-curricular projects whenever possible. As the International School of Tomorrow (ISOT), I was Vice President of the Student Council and Coordinator of the Press Association, while during my time at Regent’s College I was President of the Event Organising Committee. I am greatly excited by the MSc course’s proposed emphasis on group work and believe that these extra-curricular and employment experiences will allow me to make the most of working with fellow students to undertake the kind of debates that would take place in real life scenarios. Learning to work with others and share skills and opinions is essential to providing effective marketing solutions and I look forward to building on my previous skills in this area prior to entering the profession.
As you may imagine of someone with such a long-standing academic interest in marketing and business, I also use my spare time to keep abreast of developments within the field. I subscribe to Harvard Business Review and The Economist and have always taken every opportunity to develop skills within business outside of the curriculum, such as attending a training weekend at Barmley Lakes Learning and Development Centre.
Having gained an awareness of the key position that Marketing plays in the performance of any business, I believe that I fit the profile of the ideal applicant for this course. I am ambitious, motivated and eager to learn, with an academic and employment background in business administration and an entrepreneurial spirit. The intellectually challenging environment of Imperial College, coupled with strong links with industry, would seem to provide the ideal springboard to translate my aptitudes and interests into a successful career in the field.

What do admissions tutors look for in a postgraduate personal statement.
A personal statement is part of your university application. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate your suitability for a course. Admissions tutors want to know why you want to study the course and how your experiences make you the ideal candidate.
The difference between a postgraduate application from an undergraduate one is that it is fully tailored to a particular university’s course. As an undergraduate, your statement is more generic as it can be sent to five universities. Whereas your postgraduate personal statement is for one course only – it should be a lot more specific to what and where you’re applying for.
Postgraduate study is also a significant level up from undergraduate, so avoid using the statement you wrote for your bachelor’s course as a template. The admissions team is interested in how you’ve grown since your previous studies.
Writing a personal statement for university is different to writing one for a job application. It should show your academic interests and explain why the university will help develop your learning and research. You’re not trying to charm the reader. Instead, you're providing insight into who you are, your achievements and your enthusiasm for the course.
Before putting pen to paper, read through all information about the course and what you need to do to apply.
If you can, arrange to speak with one of the course tutors or a current student to discuss what admissions tutors are looking for. Are you able to see examples of successful personal statements from previous applicants?
- Your relevant academic and practical experiences
- The bits about the course that particularly interest you
- Anything else the university has asked you to include
You can then use this to structure your plan.
Carefully plan what you’re going to write in each paragraph to ensure you include all the important information and present it coherently. Your course will demand effective communication from you, and admissions tutors will look for evidence of this in your writing.
- An interesting introduction that outlines your academic background and relevant experiences
- Engaging middle paragraphs that detail, with examples, how your interests, achievements and experiences make you right for the course
- A strong conclusion that pulls together the main points and summarises why you want to study it
Each paragraph and sentence should flow logically into the next. If you want, you can split up sections with headings (like ‘Academic achievements’ or ‘Career goals’) to make the statement easy to navigate.
For the word count, check with the university you’re applying to, as each may ask for different things.
What to write in a personal statement
You want to show how your interests and experiences make you the right person.
- How will the course help with your future goals?
- What experiences do you have that provide evidence of your interest in the course?
- What modules or projects in your undergraduate degree really challenged your thinking?
- How has any employment shaped your ambitions?
- Have any personal or public events inspired you?
- Which books have you read, or activities have you been involved in, that have influenced you?
Rather than just listing experiences, explain how they shaped you and how they will help you succeed. There’s no need to write down your qualifications as the admissions tutor will have these details with the rest of your application.
- What are your hobbies?
- Are you part of any sports teams or societies?
- Do you volunteer?
This builds a picture of who you are and what you’ll be like as a student. If you want to and if relevant, refer to challenges you encountered during the pandemic – but in a positive way.
You don’t need to include everything in your statement. It should highlight the key information and leave the reader wanting to interview you to find out more.
The admissions team will be looking through many personal statements – they want to see a variety of experiences and stories. You can reflect this in your writing style; avoid repetition and use a variety of words to paint a unique picture.
Try not to use obvious phrases such as ‘I have always been interested in...’ or a gimmicky opening line like a famous quote. Instead, get to the point quickly and say in your voice why you’re excited about the course.
Be concise and make every word count. What you write should be relevant and honest, demonstrating your potential. Everything should be balanced; you can be confident in your abilities but try not to come across as arrogant. Show why you should be given the place, but don’t beg.
- First-person narrative
- Correct use of spelling, grammar and punctuation
- Varied and interesting vocabulary
- A positive and friendly, yet professional tone
- Paragraphs that flow logically into the next
- Clear and concise points backed up with evidence
- Clichéd language
- Waffle or too much irrelevant information
- Vague or confusing sentences
- Excuses for gaps in your experience
Proofread your statement to check that your points are clear and there are no spelling or grammatical errors. You can use spellchecking tools and free writing assistants like Grammarly or Hemingway Editor to perfect your work. Reading your statement aloud can be helpful to see if it makes sense and flows well.
Ask at least one other person to read through and check it. This could be a friend, family member, careers adviser or a tutor if you’re still at university. A second pair of eyes may spot anything that doesn’t make sense or errors that you’ve missed.
Personal statement tips
- Give yourself plenty of time to write, edit and check
- Take lots of breaks and return to your work with fresh eyes
- Make sure your statement is unique and written by you
- If you’re an international student, say why you want to study in the UK
- Be prepared to talk about what you’ve written in an interview
- And if you’re applying for more than one course, make sure to write a different, tailored statement for each application!

Marketing Management Personal Statement
It began during my daily commute to school in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Although it was incredibly common to see homeless people, including those with mental and physical disabilities, wandering the streets of Addis, I never got used to the sight. I grew up feeling a strong desire to help those in need, and I particularly became interested in learning how to improve the lives of amputees. I grew fascinated with the concepts of robotic arms and prosthetic limbs. Reading ‘The Touch’ by Randall Wallace, taught me about the characteristics of a biomedical engineer. Characteristics such as patience, collaboration, and creativeness, all of which I believe I possess and want to develop further through this course. I learned that biomedical engineering is for those who are passionate about working at the interface of innovation and medicine. Knowing this, made it clear that this field is the perfect place for me.
I attended Biomedical Engineering talks during open days at Queen Mary’s University , UCL and King’s College, where I got the chance to interact with numerous professors in the engineering sector. This exposure highlighted the immense impact that technology, even the smallest of devices, can have on saving lives. Advancements in science, medicine, and technology now allow us to design artificial body parts in such remarkable detail that they work perfectly with human bodies. I am fascinated by this work, and I enjoy staying updated on the latest medical technology developments. Recently, on Wired I read an interesting article about an innovative headset that gives verbal instructions about the surroundings to assist the visually impaired. Additionally, on Medical Futurist I read about the new device that monitors blood sugar and automatically supplies insulin to people with diabetes.
Studying A-levels has played a vital part in expanding my insight. Firstly, Biology taught me about the importance of intensive reading and identifying small details. This is particularly evident during the vast topic of the immune system. Chemistry has allowed me to gain analytical skills and has shown me how to interpret research from practicals, such as Titration. On the other hand, Maths has trained me to think logically and strategically especially when problem-solving. Outside of College, I have taken some online courses such as ‘The Basics of Biomedical Engineering’ on edX which is IEEE verified. Due to my interest in computing, I’ve also learned the basics of coding in HTML, CSS, and Python on Udemy.
I have acquired a great deal of theoretical knowledge throughout my educational career. However, I also wanted to develop my practical knowledge. To gain further experience, during the summer of 2017, I completed a voluntary placement in the genetics department of Northwick Park Hospital, where they mainly test for Cystic Fibrosis. My experience there showed me how the diagnosis for this condition takes place, for example through the new-born blood spot screening test. I had a chance to see the equipment used during these tests and was able to talk to the Doctors about what improvements they would like to see in this field. It showed me how this sector is still developing and how now is an ideal opportunity to study Biomedical Engineering. In addition to this, in February 2017, I gained work experience as a pharmacist’s assistant at Shaftesbury Pharmacy, where I aided in dispensing medicine and handing out prescriptions. The position required me to be highly attentive as I had to work with several customers simultaneously.
Biomedical engineering is a challenging and complex field, but I know that I like being challenged and believe that this would be an opportunity to expand my knowledge. Due to my open-minded, creative attitude, I’m eager to have a part and hopefully have an impact on humanity as a whole, and through this course, I believe I can do that.

Personal statements for postgraduate applications
A well-crafted Masters personal statement is the key to convincing admissions tutors that you deserve a place on a postgraduate course. Discover the dos and don'ts of writing a personal statement and take a look at some examples for inspiration
What is a personal statement?
'We certainly find the personal statement an essential part of the application process,' says Helen Hayes, assistant registrar (postgraduate and non-standard admissions) at Aberystwyth University.
A Masters personal statement is a piece of writing that you submit as part of your postgraduate application . It's your first real chance to sell yourself to the university and to demonstrate to admissions tutors that you're right for the course.
It's likely that you've already written a personal statement for your Bachelors degree , so this should give you some idea of what to expect. However, don't be tempted to use your undergraduate personal statement as a template. You will have progressed academically since then and admissions tutors will want to see evidence of this.
Your postgraduate personal statement should be unique and tailored to the course that you're applying to. Use the opportunity to show off your academic interests and abilities, and to demonstrate that the programme will benefit from your attendance as much as you'll benefit from studying it.
'From an admissions officer perspective, given that we have to read a large number of personal statements, we are always keen to see enthusiasm, interest and passion for the subject emanating off the page,' adds Helen.
How long should a postgraduate personal statement be?
A Masters personal statement should be around 500 words. This equates to one side of A4. However, some universities require more, often two sides. Some institutions also set a character limit instead of a specific word count, so it's important that you check the application guidelines before starting to write your statement.
As they're relatively short in nature, don't waste words on autobiographical information. This isn't necessary in postgraduate personal statements. Instead, focus on why you want to study a particular programme and your potential to successfully complete the course.
What should I include in a Masters personal statement?
You should tailor your personal statement to fit the course you're applying for, so what to include will largely depend on the course requirements. However, in general you should write about:
- Your reasons for applying for a particular programme and why you deserve a place above other candidates - discuss your academic interests, career goals and the university and department's reputation, and write about which aspects of the course you find most appealing, such as modules or work experience opportunities. Show that you're ready for the demands of postgraduate life by demonstrating your passion, knowledge and experience.
- Your preparation - address how undergraduate study has prepared you for a postgraduate course, mentioning your independent work (e.g. dissertation) and topics that most interested you.
- Evidence of your skillset - highlight relevant skills and knowledge that will enable you to make an impact on the department, summarising your abilities in core areas including IT, numeracy, organisation, communication, time management and critical thinking. You can also cover any grades, awards, work placements, extra readings or conferences that you've attended and how these have contributed to your readiness for Masters study.
- Your goals - explain your career aspirations and how the course will help you achieve them. 'Describe how studying your chosen course fits in with your long-term ambitions and career path,' advises Helen.
Address any clear weaknesses, such as lower-than-expected module performance in your undergraduate degree or gaps in your education history. The university will want to know about these, so explain them with a positive spin. 'We look for positive reflection in situations like this,' explains Helen. 'Cover how things have been addressed and what will be different in your proposed postgraduate studies.'
How should I structure my personal statement?
Your personal statement should follow a logical, methodical structure, where each paragraph follows on from the one before. Make sure paragraphs are short, succinct, clear and to the point. Remember, you only have 500 words to use.
Capture the reader's attention with an enthusiastic introduction covering why you want to study a particular Masters. Then, engage the reader in your middle paragraphs by summing up your academic and employment background, evidencing your knowledge and skills and demonstrating why the course is right for you.
Your conclusion should be concise, summarising why you're the ideal candidate. Overall, aim for five or six paragraphs. You can use headings to break up the text if you prefer.
The majority of postgraduate applications are submitted online directly to the university. If this is the case, present your personal statement in a standard font such as Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman, text size 11 or 12. If your course application is submitted through UKPASS (UCAS's postgraduate application service) font style won't matter, as personal statements are automatically formatted.
How can I write a good postgraduate personal statement?
- Give yourself plenty of time and don't rush . Your personal statement can make or break your application so it needs to be perfect. Tutors can tell if you're bluffing, and showing yourself up as uninformed could be costly. Before you start, read the rules and guidelines provided, check the selection criteria and research the course and institution.
- The best personal statements adopt a positive, enthusiastic and professional tone and are presented in clear, short sentences . Avoid elaborate or overly complicated phrases. Unless otherwise stated, all postgraduate personal statements should be written in English and your spelling, grammar and punctuation must be spot on, as the personal statement acts as a test of your written communication ability.
- Don't use the same supporting statement for every course . Admissions tutors can spot copy-and-paste jobs. Generic applications demonstrate that you have little understanding of the course. In order to stand out from the crowd, Masters personal statements must be unique and specific to the course and institution.
- Draft and redraft your statement until you're happy . Then ask a friend, family member or careers adviser to read it. Proofreading is incredibly important to avoid mistakes. Memorise what you've written before any interviews.
What do I need to avoid?
- follow online examples too closely
- use your undergraduate UCAS application as a template
- be negative
- lie or exaggerate
- use clichés, gimmicks, humour, over-used words such as 'passion' or Americanisms
- include inspirational quotes
- make pleading/begging statements
- needlessly flatter the organisation
- include irrelevant course modules, personal facts or extra-curricular activities
- namedrop key authors without explanation
- use overly long sentences
- repeat information found elsewhere in your application
- leave writing your personal statement to the last minute.
How should I start my Masters personal statement?
Try not to waste too much time coming up with a catchy opening. The more you try, the more contrived you'll sound and the more likely you are to fall into the trap of using clichés.
Avoid using overused phrases, such as:
- For as long as I can remember…
- From a young age…
- I am applying for this course because…
- Throughout my life I have always enjoyed…
- I have always been interested in…
- I have always been passionate about…
- I have always wanted to pursue a career in…
- Reflecting on my educational experiences…
Admissions tutors read hundreds of applications per course so the opening paragraph of your personal statement needs to get straight to the point and make a real impact. Avoid overkill statements, gimmicks and popular quotes.
If you're really struggling, come back and tackle the opening once you have written the rest.
How should I end my personal statement?
Conclusions should be short, sharp and memorable, and leave no doubt in an admissions tutor's mind that you deserve a place on a course.
The perfect ending should pull all of your key points together without waffling or repeating yourself.
Like the rest of your Masters personal statement, keep the ending simple. Be succinct and make it clear why you'll be an asset to the university and end on a positive note, with a statement about why the institution would be lucky to have you as a student.
What are admissions tutors are looking for?
- an explanation of how the course links your past and future
- an insight into your academic and non-academic abilities, and how they'll fit with the course
- evidence of your skills, commitment and enthusiasm
- knowledge of the institution's area of expertise
- reasons why you want to study at the institution
- demonstrable interest in the subject, perhaps including some academic references or readings.

Postgraduate Personal Statement Example: Advertising
You can quickly learn how to write a personal statement by examining others, and reading examples of personal statements can be valuable when applying to a university or college course.
After all, personal statement examples can teach you how to write and structure your application.
But with so many university personal statement examples available, how do you know if you’re reading a good one?
Postgraduate personal statements should highlight relevant academic and practical experience, research skills and ambitions and their suitability for the course. This postgraduate personal statement example for Advertising clearly illustrates these three critical elements.
Studying master’s degree personal statement examples can be especially valuable. They’re sometimes referred to as personal mission statements or statements of purpose , so if you’re tasked with writing a personal mission statement, the following example will work for you.
I’ve broken down this personal statement example section by section, with a commentary on each element.
That way, you’ll see its strengths and weaknesses and get some inspiration for your own personal statement .
Once you’ve read the personal statement example and analysis, you’ll be able to download a pdf of the whole document, to use as inspiration for your own!
Personal Statement Example: Introduction
“My enthusiasm for studying advertising and branding began with a university lecture that opened my mind to the value and potential of strategic marketing. The content of this lecture reverberated with me, inspiring me to consider a future career in this industry. Working in an e-commerce marketing department, I currently assist in product management. I am most productive and valuable when collaborating with colleagues responsible for advertising and marketing. Still, I am conscious that to fully transition my focus to marketing, I require a developed skillset and an understanding of contemporary strategy and resources. Aware that a master’s degree is an invisible criterion for promotion in industry, I hope that this MA in Global Advertising and Branding will facilitate a change into this creative and fulfilling sector. I am confident that this postgraduate program will offer me the tools I need to achieve my personal and professional ambitions.”
Commentary and Analysis
This personal statement introduction begins convincingly. The writer links a specific moment in their academic studies with the inspiration to pursue this course and subject, showing a clear and relevant connection between experience and ambition.
The writer then briefly outlines their relevant professional skillset and connects it with a reflective passage that shows how the course would add value to their industry knowledge. They frame this in a way that doesn’t suggest weakness, which is rather skillfully done.
They then connect all of these elements together in a way that shows how clearly the course they are applying for will meet and match their needs. It’s concise, engaging and effective.

Personal Statement Example: Academic Background
“Studying at Marshall University allowed me to develop valuable multicultural links, and I was fortunate to complete my undergraduate studies at the University of Buckley. This equipped me with a comprehensive and systematic understanding of knowledge acquisition, academic writing, critical thinking and relevant research practices. In addition to completing academic assignments, I collaborated with my peers to complete numerous teamwork tasks. For instance, in an entrepreneurship course, my peers and I had to work together to sell a product and earn a profit. During the process, I learned about the difference between actual sales and analysis and deepened my understanding of practical marketing approaches. Working on projects with my supervising professors, I assisted in designing and analysing the results of a Transport Mode survey, increasing my interest and skills in market research. Similarly, experiential knowledge of survey design, focus group analysis, and data visualisation means I have the qualitative and quantitative skills necessary to apply customer and client feedback successfully. Consequently, I am confident that I have already laid a solid academic foundation to support my graduate studies.”
Commentary and Analysis
The writer has made some effective statements about the transferable and academic skills gained as an undergraduate, and this is always a sensible and effective strategy to see in a personal statement example. They’ve mentioned research experience, which is particularly pertinent, as is critical thinking.
However, it would have been even more effective to have made reference to exactly how these skills could be used to support their postgraduate experience. By connecting skills and experiences with specific modules on the course being applied for, the writer would have deepened the evidence of their suitability.
The second half of this section is a lot more relevant and detailed, and the writer has identified knowledge in fields such as market research and data visualisation, both of which connect well with advertising. Again, it would have been even more effective to have clarified which aspects of the postgraduate course these skills supported, as it would have given the writer an opportunity to evidence knowledge of the postgraduate degree being applied for.

Personal Statement Example: Practical Experience 1
“In 2019, I joined the customer service department of an electric vehicle company as a user-experience specialist. My job was to increase and monitor app-user interaction and enhance positive customer experience. This highlighted customer service’s vital role in successful purchasing, consumer trust and client relationships. My team formed small working groups to operate service accounts, answer user questions and release news concerning strategic marketing goals. We also introduced incentives such as bonus points or badges to encourage owners to solve problems for new users, strengthening community connections and product value. Through this work, I recognised the importance of word-of-mouth strategy and network promotions in consumer marketing. This aspect of marketing will be an area of research interest throughout my master’s course, and I look forward to gaining a deeper insight into the discipline in the Strategic Advertising Management and Marketing module.”
The professional experience the writer outlines, whilst not immediately relevant to the subject they are applying for, gives the reader confidence that the applicant understands the demands of working in industry and, in particular, customer engagement.
There is mention of teamwork and marketing, and certainly, these are key elements within advertising. Again, it would have been valuable if the writer had made formal links with the course demands and clearly showed how and why these skills are valuable.
The last two sentences are ideal. The writer explains the value of this experience to them and makes a connection with the suitability it provides for course study by identifying a specific module. This shows suitability for and knowledge of the course, and is an excellent, concise and engaging model.

Personal Statement Example: Practical Experience 2
“I joined Amazon as a marketing operations manager with a remit to promote digital product lines in October 2021. Working with product and program managers, I build networks through which Amazon’s sellers can choose third-party providers. This role allowed me to voice my informed opinion, contribute to marketing strategy and take the lead in decision-making and engagement. I am also responsible for implementing and optimising the standard operating procedure and ensuring the progress and success of the department. When helping service providers pass internal vetting before onboarding them within the network, I collaborate with colleagues from Amazon intern teams in areas such as Advertising and Regional Development. Consequently, my communication and negotiation skills have improved significantly, and I am confident in my ability to present complex information with clarity and value, which is a critical marketing skill. As our product was a localised one launched from a global version, I worked closely with the global team to manage providers and exchange operational data. Global and our CN team hold weekly meetings to monitor progress, review strategies and align on key topics, preparing me well for an advanced study of Global Advertising and Branding. This experience also improved my English and logical thinking skills, strengthening my capacity to manage my work to meet challenging deadlines.”
Commentary and Analysis:
This next example is more relevant, as it begins by making a connection with product promotion, which is an ideal grounding for advertising.
The writer then outlines an increasingly high level of responsibilities and skills, all of which show a growing understanding of the sector from a professional and practical perspective. This kind of content is critical in a master’s application, as the reader can see maturity, application of skill in a real-world setting and a sense of logical academic development, with the postgraduate course being the next logical step on the writer’s journey.
The writer then links these increasingly relevant experiences to another specific aspect of the course they are applying for. This is extremely well-written, convincing and engaging in style and rich with relevant content.
The one thing that all successful personal statements have in common is that they are concise, engaging and accurate in spelling, punctuation and grammar. Consequently, I always recommend Grammarly to my students and clients.
It’s an outstanding tool for ensuring your personal statement is rich with detail whilst hitting those all-important word limits. Check out the free version of Grammarly here , or hit the banner for more information.
Personal Statement Example: Conclusion
“My application to read for a master’s degree is motivated by my desire to receive the academic and professional knowledge that will enable me to develop my career to its full potential. Having already developed a range of contributary skills and experiences, I am keen to gain value from your Entrepreneurship and Global Marketing courses and to explore your faculty’s networks, resources and opportunities. I look forward to contributing to your learning community as an active and engaged student, supporting my peers during the course, and subsequently as a successful alum.”
The first sentence of this conclusion is very vague and generic, and while it reads well, it just doesn’t say anything unique or personal about the candidate. It would be far stronger if specific academic or professional knowledge was referenced and exactly what the writer’s career ambitions are.
Equally, there’s a mention of another course element, which is excellent, but none of the resources or opportunities are identified, so the reader won’t be convinced that the applicant really knows what kind of networks and faculty resources are available.
Lastly, the candidate mentions contributing to the faculty, which is an essential element to include but doesn’t indicate how they might do this. More detail here would have made the conclusion far more direct and compelling.

A guide to writing a Masters personal statement
Share this article:
If you are considering postgraduate study, you will need to think about writing an application that demonstrates why you are the right candidate for the course and their university. This is where your personal statement comes in.
You’ll already have written a personal statement for your undergraduate application, so the concept should be familiar. However, there are some things you should be aware of when it comes to writing specifically for postgraduate study.
In this guide, we’ll explain how to write a stand-out Masters personal statement and provide you with some valuable insights from our Masters Recruitment Manager Danielle, here at Warwick Business School (WBS).
What is a Masters personal statement?
An MSc personal statement, also known as a ‘statement of purpose’, supports your application to study a postgraduate course at university. It should highlight your key skills and experience whilst demonstrating your understanding of the course and conveying your academic skills and interests.
From her experience in the Recruitment and Business Development team at WBS, Danielle gives her take on a personal statement:
Your personal statement is your opportunity to sell yourself and differentiate yourself from any other applicant, share your passion for joining WBS and link your life experiences and skills to how you could contribute to a cohort.
How long should a Masters personal statement be?
A personal statement for postgraduate study should fit within two pages of A4. Whilst you won’t be penalised if it is slightly longer, you should always make sure the content is relevant and doesn’t repeat information elsewhere in your application.
What do you need to prepare before writing a Masters personal statement?
Before writing your personal statement for postgraduate study, there are a few things you should consider.
Research your options
Take the time to read through course pages and brochures. You’ll find in-depth information on what the course involves and how it might align with your career goals. Danielle explains how understanding what the course involves is key in demonstrating your suitability and passion for a course:
All of our course webpages feature extensive information on the course modules, so take the time to show you’ve done your research in your personal statement. Your personal statement is your chance to relate yourself to our core values and demonstrate what a strong candidate you will be for one of our programmes. Ensure you also use this as an opportunity to link our programme to your future career.
Course titles should not be taken at face value. Whilst some universities will have courses with the same titles, the content will differ. You need to demonstrate you understand what the course entails and why you want to apply for a particular course as. Danielle adds:
Take time to look at the content of the course you are applying for; although course titles may be the same at different universities the course content can be different. Do your research and demonstrate this in your personal statement, showing how invested you are in studying at WBS.
Consider what you want from your studies
The range of choice when it comes to postgraduate study is vast, and it can feel overwhelming when deciding which course is right for you.
Whilst opinions from your friends and family are important, they shouldn’t be the ultimate deciding factor when choosing a course. Ultimately you need to consider what you really want and whether it aligns with your career goals.
Begin to prepare your application
Once you have decided which course you would like to apply for and you’ve ensured you meet the entry requirements, you will need to begin preparing your application. This includes collecting the correct documentation such as a CV, transcript, personal statement, and reference.
What should you include in a Masters personal statement?
Recruitment and admissions teams receive thousands of applications each year so it is important that your personal statement is to the point and demonstrates what they are looking for in their students.
Danielle gives some insight into what our recruitment team looks for in a personal statement for a Masters degree:
Aim to keep your personal statement to the point by making sure you answer the following questions, addressing the key points our Selection Committee will be looking for:
- Why have you selected this course? What are your motivating factors?
- How do you see this course benefitting your career plans?
- What will you contribute to your cohort?
As well as addressing these key questions, you should also include the following:
Academic achievements
You need to demonstrate how your undergraduate study has prepared you for a postgraduate course. You can do this by highlighting specific achievements, projects and pieces of work as well as mentioning any particular topics that interest you.
Professional achievements
If you completed any professional work experience alongside your studies, it is a good idea to mention them here. Highlight any duties, tasks and responsibilities you had to demonstrate what you gained from this work experience.
Relevant extracurricular activities
Including information about relevant extracurricular activities you are involved in can help to give a more rounded view of you as a person. This could include volunteering opportunities and any meaningful hobbies you have.
Transferable skills
Your transferable skills should be highlighted throughout your personal statement. The types of things you could include are presentation skills, communication skills, analytical thinking and time management. Consider what you can bring to lectures and workshops. For example, if your course involves a lot of group work, use an example where you demonstrate your experience with this.
What should you avoid when writing a Masters personal statement?
Repetition of information.
When submitting both a CV and personal statement it can be easy to fall into the trap of just repeating the same information across both documents. Your personal statement is an opportunity for you to reflect and expand on what you have stated on your CV, rather than repeating the same information.
Not providing enough context
Simply listing your achievements without providing context will not prove to the recruitment teams that you are the right candidate for the course. Provide hard evidence to back up the statements you make and try to give two or three in-depth examples, rather than several weak answers.
Not tailoring your application to the specific university or course
Recruitment and admissions teams are keen to hear why you have chosen a specific course and why you want to attend their university. You need to provide clear examples of what excites you about their institution and how you can align with their particular values.
What do recruitment teams look for in a Masters personal statement?
University recruitment teams and selection committees review thousands of applications each year. To ensure your application stands out, you must show that you have taken the time to prepare and research your chosen university.
Recruitment teams want to see your passion for the subject and motivations for joining their institution. Detailing your experience and the skills you can bring will help to emphasise this. Danielle also suggests not overlooking the obvious when it comes to writing a personal statement:
It may sound simple but the first answer to this question is that the Selection Committee wants to see a well written, clearly structured personal statement which demonstrates good preparation and research.
What else do I need to include with my Masters application?
The documents you need to include in your application may vary by institution and course. But generally, as well as your personal statement, you will also need to include:
- Academic and professional references
- Copies of your undergraduate degree certificate and academic transcripts
- A list of final year modules if you're still studying for an undergraduate degree
- A research proposal (not all courses will require this)
If you are an international student, there are some additional things you will need to provide including:
- A copy of your passport
- Proof of your language proficiency through either a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) certificate, or any others that meet requirements outlined on our course pages.
When are the deadlines for Masters applications?
Deadlines for Masters programmes vary quite widely between courses and universities. Information on specific deadlines can be found on their respective course pages and postgraduate brochures . You should aim to make an application early in the cycle to ensure there are still places available on the course.
Deadlines for scholarships and external scholarships can also vary, so if you wish to apply for these, you will also have to factor in these deadlines.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an interview for masters programmes.
At WBS, there are no interviews for MSc courses. Instead, all decisions are made based on the application you submit. Your undergraduate transcript will be reviewed in depth along with your CV and personal statement.
How many Masters can you apply for?
If you are applying to a UK university, you can apply for as many courses and universities as you like. However, you should not over-stretch yourself and you should only apply for courses that you are really passionate about.
Writing an appropriately tailored application can be time-consuming and attempting to write too many could jeopardise your chances of being successful.
Do you have to pay for your Masters application?
We require an application fee of £75 to cover administrative costs. If you're applying to multiple Warwick courses, remember each course will warrant its own application fee.
How do I apply for a Masters degree?
We have our own application system, and you can find linked 'how to apply' sections on all of our course pages.

Therefore, I would like to humbly request you to consider about granting my admission, so that I can start my post graduate education in time, and make my parents and country proud.

Guide to writing your personal statement.
What is a personal statement?
Your personal statement is an important part of your postgraduate application. This is your chance to engage the Course Selectors and demonstrate your passion, enthusiasm and commitment for your chosen course. You can use it to clarify and expand on any information in your application and highlight what you want us to know. It should be personalised for the specific course you are applying for.
Personal Statements should be approximately 1-2 pages. It must be in English and in your own words.
Do your research
When applying for any course, we strongly recommend you view the course pages on the relevant Warwick department's webpages to read more information on the course description, content, entry requirements and any additional requirements.
Additionally, some departments such as WBS and WMG have particular requirements for what they want you to write about in your personal statement. Please make sure you visit the course pages on your department's website to check for any additional requirements.
What should you write about?
Here are some themes you should consider when writing your personal statement. Please note this list is not complete, but includes useful questions you may wish to explore:
Why are you interested in the course?
What are your reasons for choosing this specific course at the University of Warwick? What motivates you? Why do you want to undertake postgraduate study at this point in your academic or professional career?
How are you qualified for the course?
This may be about your prior study, work experience, internships, skills, achievements or research and how they relate the course. How did your previous experiences give you the skills or knowledge you will need for this course specifically? What did you learn and how would this help you on this course? What might you contribute to your cohort?
How will the course benefit your future career plans?
What are your goals? What skills do you want to develop? How would this course prepare you for the future you envision for yourself?
- Try to avoid vague statements such as 'I have always wanted to go to your University because I have a passion for study' or 'I want a better job'.
- You don't need to repeat information you have already given us. For example, we already know the details of your undergraduate degree from your transcripts.
- Likewise, you can include information about your employment, hobbies and voluntary work, but you need to add more detail to explain how they are related to the course you are applying for.
- Donʼt submit the same generic statement for many different courses. You must tailor the statement for each specific course.
- You may use your personal statement to address any gaps in your knowledge and how you have or plan to address them.
- Make sure your personal statement has a clear introduction (beginning), body (middle), and conclusion (the end). Check your grammar and spelling, and keep your sentences short and concise.

Marketing and business management personal statement example 1.
Ever since an early stage in my life, I have always worked hard to overcome challenges. This in turn influenced my passion for business. Business can be a risky and competitive industry, but having considered my most desired skills and interests, I know that I am ready to step into the world of business.
My passion for business has reinforced my decision and motivation to study business at a degree level. I am a creative, alert and hard working individual who can work intuitively with a pragmatic approach to studying, and for this reason I believe I can succeed in this course. I am keen to develop my knowledge in marketing as this is an interesting area of work for me. I also like to carry out my own research, and find out new points about business that I haven't come across yet.
I understand that marketing demands a fair degree of scientific thinking. And that it is a complex profession, requiring a broad understanding of technology, an awareness of how to analyse and understand data, plus a good grounding in a variety of other scientific and mathematical principles which I personally believe I have and this would enable me to progress and establish a good understanding.
Some of the modules that I have covered include Finance, Human Resources, Strategic Management and Marketing. With excellent understanding in these subjects that I have covered and an enthusiasm for knowledge, I am confident in my ability to progress further in business as I am keen to further my own skills in education.
I undertook a school-led work experience scheme at a business firm called Bridge Park in Wembley. Being an office-based job, I was able to further my organisational and interpersonal skills as I learnt the importance of professionalism in the work area and the day-to-day pressures of deadlines. During my time at Bridge Park, I recognised how businesses work with one another to gain profit.
During my secondary school life, I captained my football team from year 7-11. This improved my leadership abilities as I learnt how to organise the team, and understood the importance of teamwork, encouraging the players and improving team morale and spirit.
Being a successful captain, I always believed in a democratic team who could interact with each other, giving individual input from each of the members, and my role was to bring their ideas together and make final decisions. Being captain made me gain the understanding of commitment to the team and helping the team to a winning form.
I have been on various trips, one of which was a school trip to Egypt. It was an amazing experience, where I interacted with people from a different background. I was able to acknowledge and understand the values and norms of other cultures. This was thoroughly rewarding and I now have a deeper appreciation of diversity.
I am a believer of pro-actively trying to make a difference to world poverty and even in the current climates of recession I strongly believe that the developed countries have a duty to developing countries today. I'm currently donating monthly to Oxfam and have previously undertaken some volunteer work for the charity organisation, which provides domestic aid to developing countries.
During this time, I was able to help raise money to give aid to the children in Somalia. I found this experience very rewarding as I know that however little my efforts may seen, they have surely provided at least one child a better life. These efforts only strengthened my determination to work hard and achieve to the highest of my ability.
Making full use of the facilities we have in London, I am a regular attendee at my local gym and am a fanatic of sport, from hockey to basketball, but favouring football.
Having read a lot of media reviews on health and fitness and assessed the new approaches to health over the last few years, I am much more aware of the need to be positive about my health and understand the physical importance of taking care of your body and its effect on the mind, than ever before.
I intend to study at university and achieve a high class degree that will greatly help me to pursue my career plans in Business.

This personal statement is unrated. I enjoy all my subjects on international business communication, but have found marketing and advertising particularly interesting and would like to study it further in a postgraduate program. It is a pivotal subject on which so many others depend (such as economics and business administration).
Just start by showing your enthusiasm for the subject, showcasing your knowledge and understanding, and sharing your ambitions of what you want to achieve. Avoid cliches . The difference between a postgraduate application from an undergraduate one is that it is fully tailored to a particular university's course.
