PM Modi to inaugurate NAMO Medical Education and Research Institute's new campus for Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu

Pic only for representational purpose (Pic credits: Express)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new campus of the NAMO Medical Education and Research Institute, the only medical college in the UT of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu on April 17. The institute, which had been operating from a leased building, is now set to shift to its own campus spread across 35 acres in Silvassa.

It has become a beacon of hope and a symbol of the growing aspirations of the people of the region, around 40 per cent of whom are tribals. Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone of the medical college in 2019, as per a report by  PTI .

Further, the infrastructure has come up at a cost of Rs 203 crore and features state-of-the-art amenities such as a multi-storey library, academic block with four lecture halls and an auditorium, club house, residential accommodation for faculty and hostels for students, and provision for outdoor and indoor games.

Speaking on this, the Union Territory's health secretary Dr Arun T said, "Pursuing higher education, especially medical education, has been a far-fetched dream for students of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. Earlier, before the establishment of the medical college, only 10-12 students from the Union Territory could get the opportunity to avail seats in medical colleges all over India from the central pool quota allotted to the Union Territory each year."

The dean of NAMO Medical Education and Research Institute Dr Ramchandra Goyal said "The medical college started in the 2019-20 academic year with a capacity of 150 MBBS students. The number has gradually increased to 177 with 27 seats for students from the Economically Weaker Sections. At present, there are 682 students enrolled in the college. The target is to increase the number of seats to 200."

Besides the NAMO Medical Education and Research Institute, Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the proposed Ayurvedic Hospital and Wellness Centre, planned to come up in a serene area near Madhuban Dam on 40 acres of land with lush green surroundings. It is estimated to cost Rs 70 crore, as per a report by  PTI.

Silvassa: The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated NAMO Medical Education & Research Institute in Silvassa yesterday. The medical college will offer 177 MBBS seats including 27 seats for EWS category students.

He also laid the foundation stone and dedicated to the nation various development projects worth more than Rs 4850 crores at Silvassa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

The projects include the dedication of NAMO Medical Education & Research Institute in Silvassa, and the dedication and laying the foundation stone of 96 projects such as government schools, Government Engineering College in Daman, beautification, strengthening and widening of various roads, fish market and shopping complex and augmentation of water supply scheme in the region among others.

The Prime Minister also handed over the house keys to beneficiaries of PMAY Urban from Diu and Silvassa.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister also visited the NAMO Medical Education & Research Institute in Silvassa where he was accompanied by The Administrator of Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu and Lakshadweep, Shri Praful Patel. He inaugurated the institute and paid floral tributes at the statue of Lord Dhanvantari.

The foundation stone of the institute was also laid by the Prime Minister himself in January 2019. It will transform the healthcare services for the citizens of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.

The state-of-the-art medical college includes the latest research centers, a 24x7 Central library equipped with access to national and international journals, specialized medical staff, medical labs, smart lecture halls, research labs, an anatomy museum, a clubhouse, sports facilities and residences for students and faculty members.

The Prime Minister inspected the model of the college campus and walked through the Anatomy Museum and Dissection Room in the Academic Block. The Prime Minister also took a walkthrough of the Central Library and signed the visitor’s book. He proceeded towards the amphitheater where he interacted with construction labourers.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister expressed his happiness about witnessing the development journey of Daman, Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. He noted the growing cosmopolitanism of Silvassa as it is home to people from every corner of the country. He said, noting the people’s love for tradition and modernity both, the government is working with full dedication for the development of the Union Territory. He said in the last few years, a lot of work has been done on the physical and social infrastructure in the UT with an allocation of 5500 crores.

He talked about LED-lit streets, door-to-door waste collection and 100 percent waste processing. He also praised the new Industrial Policy of the state as a means to increase industry and employment in the UT. “Today I got the opportunity to start fresh projects of 5000 crore”, he said. These projects are related to health, housing, tourism, education and urban development. “They will improve ease of living, tourism, transportation and business, " he added.

Referring to the projects of today, he expressed delight that the foundation stones of several projects were laid down by the Prime Minister himself. He lamented the fact that for large periods of time, the government projects for the development of the country either remained stuck, were abandoned or led astray, sometimes to the extent that the foundation stone itself would turn to debris and the projects remained incomplete.

But in the last 9 years, the Prime Minister emphasized that a new working style has been developed and the work culture has been introduced. He underlined that the present government strives to complete the projects on time, and also moves on to other development work immediately after completion. The Prime Minister said the projects of today are an example of this work culture and congratulated everyone for the development works.

The Prime Minister reiterated that the central government is moving with the mantra of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas”. He said that the balanced development of every region is a huge priority. The Prime Minister criticised a long-running tendency of viewing development from the prism of vote bank politics. This led to the deprivation of tribal and border areas. Fishermen were left to their fate and Daman, Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli paid a heavy price for this, said the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister drew attention to the fact that even after decades of independence, the regions of Daman, Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli did not have a single medical college and the youth had to travel to other regions of the country to become doctors. He pointed out that the number of youth from the Adivasi community who got such opportunities was next to zero, while those who ruled the nation for decades paid no heed to the wants and aspirations of the people from this region.

The Prime Minister highlighted that Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli got its first National Academic Medical Organisation or NAMO Medical College only due to the service-oriented approach and dedication of the present government which came into power after 2014. “Now every year, approximately 150 youth from the region will get a chance to study medicine”, the Prime Minister said as he informed that roughly 1000 doctors will be produced from the region in the near future.

The Prime Minister also mentioned a news report of a girl who is studying medicine in her first year who had said that she is the first to do so not only in her family but in the entire village.

The Prime Minister said that a sense of service marks the people of the area and remembered the proactive help that the local medical students provided during the pandemic.

The Prime Minister said that he mentioned the Village Adoption Programme of the local student was mentioned by him in Mann Ki Baat. The Prime Minister said that the medical college will reduce the pressure on local medical facilities. “A new 300-bed hospital is under construction and permission has been granted for a new Ayurvedic hospital”, he added.

The Prime Minister recalled his days as a Chief Minister and said that he started science education in schools in the tribal areas. He also addressed the issue of education not being in the mother tongue. “Now the option of even medical and engineering education is available in local languages which will greatly help the local students”, he said.

PM Modi To Inaugurate New Campus of Sole Medical College For UT Dadra And Nagar Haveli, Daman And Diu

PM Modi To Inaugurate New Campus of Sole Medical College For UT Dadra And Nagar Haveli, Daman And Diu PM Modi To Inaugurate New Campus of Sole Medical College For UT Dadra And Nagar Haveli, Daman And Diu

Silvassa: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new campus of the NAMO Medical Education and Research Institute, the sole medical college in the UT of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu on April 17, 2023. After functioning from a rented structure, the institute is now poised to relocate to its independent 35-acre campus in Silvassa. This establishment has emerged as a ray of hope and an emblem of the developing aspirations of the area's inhabitants, of whom around 40% are tribal, as reported by PTI.

In 2019, Prime Minister Modi had laid the foundation stone of the medical college.

The state-of-the-art infrastructure, which includes a multi-story library, an academic block with four lecture halls and an auditorium, a club house, residential quarters for faculty members, hostels for students, and outdoor and indoor sports facilities, has been erected at a cost of Rs. 203 crores.

Dr Arun T, the Union Territory's health secretary told PTI, "Pursuing higher education, especially medical education, has been a far-fetched dream for students of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.

"Earlier, before the establishment of the medical college, only 10-12 students from the Union Territory could get the opportunity to avail seats in medical colleges all over India from the central pool quota allotted to the Union Territory each year. The Union Territory could establish a medical college only in 2019 when, with the support and guidance of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Health, the NAMO Medical Education and Research Institute began functioning," Dr Arun T said.

The Institute's dean, Dr. Ramchandra Goyal said that the medical college opened with a capacity of 150 MBBS students in the academic year 2019-20. The capacity has since been raised to 177, with 27 positions designated for students from economically weaker backgrounds. At present, the college has a total enrollment of 682 students.

"The target is to increase the number of seats to 200," Goyal said.

Third-year student Mitesh Jha said he considered himself fortunate unlike the meritorious students of his previous generations who had to battle to make it to the limited number of medical seats from the Union Territory to fulfil their dream of becoming doctors.

"There has been no medical college in the Union Territory since Independence. I am happy that I am able to pursue medical education," Jha said.

Jha is thrilled about the Prime Minister's upcoming visit to inaugurate the new campus and is eager to engage in dialogue with him.

"I am very excited about getting to see Prime Minister Narendra Modi," he added.

Mehak Bhasara, a first-year student hailing from the tribal community and a resident of Randha village in Silvassa district, encapsulates the transformation that has occurred in the region.

"Nobody in my family, not even in my entire village, could become doctors. It's my fortune that a medical college has come up in Dadra and Nagar Haveli," she said, adding that she will serve the people of the area after becoming a doctor.

Through this medical college, students from poor families are also able to fulfil their dreams of pursuing medical education, she said.

Located four kilometres from the medical college, the Shri Vinoba Bhave Civil Hospital attached to it caters to the needs of the entire population of the Union Territory and the adjoining villages of Gujarat and Maharashtra, in addition to other states.

Set up in 1952 and earlier known as Cottage Hospital, it was a 60-bed facility with bare minimum amenities before being expanded to 316 beds. It is currently functioning with 650 beds and is being upgraded to 1,270.

Besides the NAMO Medical Education and Research Institute, Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the proposed Ayurvedic Hospital and Wellness Centre, planned to come up in a serene area near Madhuban Dam on 40 acres of land with lush green surroundings. It is estimated to cost Rs 70 crore.
