The Harvard Ph.D. in Education trains cutting-edge researchers who work across disciplines to generate knowledge and translate discoveries into transformative policy and practice.
Offered jointly by the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Ph.D. in Education provides you with full access to the extraordinary resources of Harvard University and prepares you to assume meaningful roles as university faculty, researchers, senior-level education leaders, and policymakers.
As a Ph.D. candidate, you will collaborate with scholars across all Harvard graduate schools on original interdisciplinary research. In the process, you will help forge new fields of inquiry that will impact the way we teach and learn. The program’s required coursework will develop your knowledge of education and your expertise in a range of quantitative and qualitative methods needed to conduct high-quality research. Guided by the goal of making a transformative impact on education research, policy, and practice, you will focus on independent research in various domains, including human development, learning and teaching, policy analysis and evaluation, institutions and society, and instructional practice.
Curriculum Information
The Ph.D. in Education requires five years of full-time study to complete. You will choose your individual coursework and design your original research in close consultation with your HGSE faculty adviser and dissertation committee. The requirements listed below include the three Ph.D. concentrations: Culture, Institutions, and Society; Education Policy and Program Evaluation; and Human Development, Learning and Teaching .
We invite you to review an example course list, which is provided in two formats — one as the full list by course number and one by broad course category . These lists are subject to modification.
Ph.D. Concentrations and Examples
Summary of Ph.D. Program
Doctoral Colloquia In year one and two you are required to attend. The colloquia convenes weekly and features presentations of work-in-progress and completed work by Harvard faculty, faculty and researchers from outside Harvard, and Harvard doctoral students. Ph.D. students present once in the colloquia over the course of their career.
Research Apprenticeship The Research Apprenticeship is designed to provide ongoing training and mentoring to develop your research skills throughout the entire program.
Teaching Fellowships The Teaching Fellowship is an opportunity to enhance students' teaching skills, promote learning consolidation, and provide opportunities to collaborate with faculty on pedagogical development.
Comprehensive Exams The Written Exam (year 2, spring) tests you on both general and concentration-specific knowledge. The Oral Exam (year 3, fall/winter) tests your command of your chosen field of study and your ability to design, develop, and implement an original research project.
Dissertation Based on your original research, the dissertation process consists of three parts: the Dissertation Proposal, the writing, and an oral defense before the members of your dissertation committee.
Culture, Institutions, and Society (CIS) Concentration
In CIS, you will examine the broader cultural, institutional, organizational, and social contexts relevant to education across the lifespan. What is the value and purpose of education? How do cultural, institutional, and social factors shape educational processes and outcomes? How effective are social movements and community action in education reform? How do we measure stratification and institutional inequality? In CIS, your work will be informed by theories and methods from sociology, history, political science, organizational behavior and management, philosophy, and anthropology. You can examine contexts as diverse as classrooms, families, neighborhoods, schools, colleges and universities, religious institutions, nonprofits, government agencies, and more.
Education Policy and Program Evaluation (EPPE) Concentration
In EPPE, you will research the design, implementation, and evaluation of education policy affecting early childhood, K–12, and postsecondary education in the U.S. and internationally. You will evaluate and assess individual programs and policies related to critical issues like access to education, teacher effectiveness, school finance, testing and accountability systems, school choice, financial aid, college enrollment and persistence, and more. Your work will be informed by theories and methods from economics, political science, public policy, and sociology, history, philosophy, and statistics. This concentration shares some themes with CIS, but your work with EPPE will focus on public policy and large-scale reforms.
Human Development, Learning and Teaching (HDLT) Concentration
In HDLT, you will work to advance the role of scientific research in education policy, reform, and practice. New discoveries in the science of learning and development — the integration of biological, cognitive, and social processes; the relationships between technology and learning; or the factors that influence individual variations in learning — are transforming the practice of teaching and learning in both formal and informal settings. Whether studying behavioral, cognitive, or social-emotional development in children or the design of learning technologies to maximize understanding, you will gain a strong background in human development, the science of learning, and sociocultural factors that explain variation in learning and developmental pathways. Your research will be informed by theories and methods from psychology, cognitive science, sociology and linguistics, philosophy, the biological sciences and mathematics, and organizational behavior.

international students
Dear Prospective Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in graduate studies in the Department of Mathematics at UCLA. Applications are accepted for the Fall quarter only. The application deadline is December 15. The application review process begins late December; please ensure that all supporting documents, including reference letters and test scores, are received by that time. Please read all the information very carefully. In addition to the requirements below, return to Graduate Admissions for complete details.
Please note: THE UCLA Graduate Admissions Application fee is MANDATORY!! If the application fee is not paid, the UCLA Admissions Office cannot process the application.
Please note: DO NOT send publications.
Financial Support: International students are supported through a mix of fellowships, research assistantships, and teaching assistantships. Support is normally guaranteed for four years. A 5th year of support is usually provided if the student is in good standing and advanced to candidacy. Guaranteed support normally provides income that is enough for living expenses (exact amounts vary from year to year), and in addition provides full registration fees, health insurance, and non-resident tuition. All applicants are automatically considered for this financial support; no separate application is required. Students who have access to other means of support, for example scholarships from their own governments or international organizations, should apply for those separately.
Students whose first language is not English must pass UCLA’s “Test of Oral Proficiency” (TOP) before they can become teaching assistants at UCLA. Offers of support for international students are conditioned on passing this exam within the first year.
Required Tests
- GRE: Math Subject Test
- TOEFL/IELTS: Your TOEFL score on the paper and pencil test must be at least 560 (600 is recommended) or at least 87 on the internet-based test. Your IELTS Academic overall band score should be at least 7.0. 7.0 is the minimum required.
- TOP (Test of Oral Proficiency): Minimum score of 6.4 is a provisional pass permitting the student to TA.
frequently asked questions
Thank you for your interest in graduate studies in the Department of Mathematics at UCLA. Applications are accepted for the fall quarter only. The application deadline is December 15. The application review process begins late December; please ensure that all supporting documents, including reference letters and test scores, are received by that time. Please return to Graduate Admissions for more detailed information or email [email protected] for very specific questions.
The on-line University application must be submitted by December 15. We will accept scores, letters and other materials after the December 15th deadline, but your application package will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed if we do not have all materials by the end of the second week in January.
Not really. Three letters are sufficient for the review committee to get a sense of your abilities and strengths.
Either way is acceptable as long as they are officially sealed when we receive them.
International applicants that have received a Bachelor’s degree or higher from a university located in the United States, or from another country in which English is both the spoken language and the medium of instruction are exempted from the TOEFL. Please include this information in your application package.
It is University policy that you score at least a 560 on the pencil and paper test, 220 on the electronic test, or 87 on the iBT.
Students who wish to apply for admission to our graduate program for the 2024-2025 academic year are to submit a GRE Math subject test score report as part of their application package. However, students are NOT required to submit the GRE General test score.
Please note that admissions to the M.A. and M.A.T. programs have been suspended until further notice.
Be aware that when we talk about a successful applicant, numbers are only one part of the total package. That being said; the minimum GPA is 3.5 for a PhD and 3.2 for a Master’s, and although there is no minimum GRE, you must keep in mind that admission is very competitive and the higher your score, the better. On the average, those we offer admission to have GRE subject scores in or above the 80th percentile. Our GPA range is from about 3.6 to 4.0, though again there can be exceptions. Keep in mind that we look at the entire package and although we have a minimum, the average is higher. Also, there is no score at any level, which insures admission.
The Statement is your opportunity to explain your reasons for pursuing graduate study in mathematics, and to let us get a sense of who you are. You may mention any relevant facts about your education or experience with mathematics that are not apparent in the other materials you submit. You might want to note what kind of mathematics you find interesting and wish to pursue in graduate school, and what you plan to do after obtaining a Ph.D. It may include information about your background, interests, or career goals, and how UCLA might help you meet those career and educational goals. There is no specific length, but one or two pages are typical.
Your application will be accepted if we receive your scores by the end of the first week in January.
Admission decisions are based on an applicant’s entire package. Weaknesses in one area may be offset by strengths in another. The committee weighs many factors in addition to GPAs. These may include the breadth of your undergraduate courses, your letters of recommendation, statement of purpose and GRE subject score.
You may apply for admission to our program before your actual degree date as long as you have your Bachelor degree by the fall enrollment date.
The UCLA code is 4837 and the Mathematics department code is 0703.
One of the most important things you can do is to get to know your professors. You want to have letters of recommendation that tell us knowledgeably and personally about your qualifications and abilities. Your letters of recommendation should attest to the fact that you have the potential and mathematical background to be a research mathematician. It is already expected that all applicants to UCLA have a solid preparation in undergraduate math, with strong grades and GRE scores, that allows them at a minimum to pass our Basic Qualifying Exam in their first year. What we would also like to see in addition is that you have potential for advanced mathematical research. This can be demonstrated through courses that are heavy in proof oriented math, honors and graduate courses, a senior research project, a senior thesis, or a summer REU program.
You will receive an official letter by the first week of March.

The Final December of My PhD… An Intense Month, December 2022
Table of Contents
I am in the midst of my final year (terrifying) and so this is the final December of my PhD. In November, I set out to write 50,000 words following the NaNoWriMo or AcWriMo challenge. I didn’t quite achieve that goal, but I hit some pretty major goals for myself and my PhD thesis, so I’m proud of that. I am not feeling very festive so I am planning on making the most of the world feeling a little quieter, and getting a lot of work done and preparation done for 2023.
I am working on developing a few new projects for myself, as well as expanding this space and reviving my other blog because I absolutely love writing but life just hasn’t had the conditions for it up until recently. But I created myself a new desk set up and my motivation has skyrocketed. I am excited to see what I can do this month and make plans.
I know I said I wasn’t feeling festive but I have got a lot of activities in the diary, spending time with family and friends. There’s a few dinner dates, and even a prizegiving ceremony because my university awarded me some funds for an archival research trip. Exciting! It will be great to spend time with the people I love the most, even if I am not Mrs Claus this year.
I am determined to submit my PhD on time because navigating the world of postdocs is a bin fire, and I need time to work on that. I have academic career plans, and they have significant deadlines and admin requirements. So here is what I am ambitiously planning for December 2022, the final December of my PhD:
Goals for December 2022:
- GOAL 1: Write journal article on cholinesterase (10,000 words, 0 written)
- GOAL 2: Write Brain Sciences Under The Swastika review (800 words, 0 written)
- GOAL 3: Write Humane Sciences review (800 words, 0 written)
- GOAL 4: Write Hidden Histories of the Dead review (800 words, 0 written)
- GOAL 5: Write Purdysburn Hospital blog article for Epidemic Belfast (2,500 words, 0 written)
- GOAL 6: Write origins of psychosurgery in the UK chapter (20,000 words, 0 written)
- GOAL 7: Write silent but there chapter (20,000 words, 0 written)
- GOAL 8: Plan remaining research work and archive requests
- GOAL 9: Create content plan for history blog
- GOAL 10: Create content plan for lifestyle blog
- GOAL 11: Write 16 blog posts – 8 for each website (0 out of 16 written)
- GOAL 12: Revise Cholinesterase chapter
- GOAL 13: Write funding application for podcast project
- GOAL 14: Write funding application for archive visit
- GOAL 15: Plan UPenn Visit
- GOAL 16: Plan London Visit
- GOAL 17: Organise Epidemic Belfast interviews and episodes, and update website
- GOAL 18: Organise other oral history interviews
- GOAL 19: Plan podcast launch and workload
- GOAL 20: Sort notes, documents and emails
December 2022 Updates:
04/12/2022: I didn’t start on the 1st of December as planned… so that gives you an idea of how the month has begun. However, I did just finish AcWriMo so I feel like I deserved a break before launching into another month of intense work. Today I listed my plans and I have put them here for a sense of accountability. I have a lot of things to action this month. Let’s get started.
The final December of my PhD goals…
Is anyone else feeling less festive than usual? Or not following their everyday rituals of slowing down to the point of hibernation? Let me know in the comments! We can cheer each other on through December and beyond.

Graduate Education
Office of graduate and postdoctoral education, commencement.
The most wonderful moment of your graduate career is the graduation ceremony, or commencement, as it signals the beginning of your life with your new degree. Each May and December, Georgia Tech holds commencement ceremonies for undergraduate and graduate students. Visit Georgia Tech's Commencement website for all the details you need to prepare for your ceremony including graduation requirements, deadlines, day of logistics, and information regarding academic regalia.
If you have questions about commencement after reviewing the website, please contact the Commencement Office .
Commencement Regalia Assistance Fund
The Office of Graduate Education, with support from the Office of the Provost, administers the Commencement Regalia Assistance Fund (CRAF). This fund was created to assist with regalia rental and/or purchase costs for graduate students demonstrating financial need where the expense would otherwise prohibit the student from participating in the commencement ceremony. The CRAF will cover regalia robe rental and tam purchase for Ph.D. degree candidates ($185.98) or regalia purchase for master's degree candidates ($114.98). If you are interested in receiving assistance, please complete the CRAF Request form (PDF) . The deadline to submit is March 1 for spring semester, and October 1 for fall semester. Requests will be reviewed by the Office of Graduate Education and must be approved prior to the student visiting Barnes & Noble to complete the order. For additional information, please contact us .

Supplementation with omega 3-6 improves a marker of inflammation among children newly diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
Fatty acid supplementation may be a treatment route for addressing some underlying causes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among children. One potential mechanism affecting autism-related behaviors is inflammation. In general, ASD severity has been associated with inflammatory cytokine levels and externalizing behaviors with interleukin (IL)-10 and IL-1β levels. Supplementation may be a treatment route,…
CFTR Modulation Therapy Improves Markers of Inflammation and Lung Function in Cystic Fibrosis
Six months of elexacaftor-tezacaftor-ivacaftor (ETI) therapy significantly reduced proinflammatory cytokines, increased immune cell composition, and improved clinical outcomes in cystic fibrosis (CF). “Cystic fibrosis is a progressive lung disease that carries significant morbidity,” says Shahid Sheikh, MD, of the Pulmonary Medicine and Allergy/Immunology section at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and a professor at The Ohio…
Predicting Risk of Nosocomial Infection in Pediatric Burn Patients: Can Measures of Adaptive Immune Function Help?

According to the National Burn Repository, four of the top five complications of pediatric burns are infection related. Plus, infection-related complications occur in up to 60% of patients with…

They found that young women with bleeding disorders did not experience a…
New Guidelines Offer a Clear Path for Expandable Endoprosthesis Use in Post-Sarcoma Limb Reconstruction
Limb salvage operation is the standard of care for pediatric extremity bone sarcomas. These tumors often occur during the second decade of life, when children are growing rapidly. Reconstructive surgeries must account for anticipated remaining growth and the potential for resulting limb inequity. Osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma are the most common primary malignant bone tumors,…
