When it comes to PhD regalia, there is a range of different gowns and accessories to choose from.

At Marston Robing, we offer Doctoral gowns, hoods and bonnets in three styles – PhD, QMUL, and London PhD. Our gown sizes are designed to fit individuals from 5’0 to 7’0 ft tall. To find your doctoral graduation gown size please take a look at our gown size chart .

You can also order a Tudor Bonnet from us, a traditional Doctoral graduation hat. The Tudor Bonnet is soft, comfortable and features an adjustable inner headband. You can choose from a velvet or cloth fabric in black, red or royal blue.

Cambridge su gown guide.

At Cambridge, the gown you wear depends either on what degree (if any) you already hold, or else your age – the course you are studying is irrelevant.  Graduates of the University of Cambridge wear the gown corresponding to their Cambridge degree. In practice, there are only a handful of different styles that are commonly required by graduate students.

In contrast, graduate students who have a degree from any other University wear a gown which depends on their age.

Undergraduate students wear a gown determined by their College.

Graduates of the University of Cambridge

The BA gown is made of black "stuff" (ie black fabric other than silk) and has long, wide open sleeves like a wizard's robe.  These sleeves are slit vertically from the shoulders and caught together at the bottom of the slit. BA gowns also have "strings", which are black ribbons attached inside the shoulders. These are vestigial and barely decorative as they are not normally visible.

The BA gown is longer than undergraduate gowns, but shorter than an MA gown, falling just below the knees.

The MA gown may either be made of black "stuff" or black silk. Like the BA gown, it has strings.

The primary difference between the MA and BA gown is in the sleeves: the MA gown has long sleeves which reach far past the length of the arm and are sealed at the end.  This is majestic, but impractical: there are therefore slits in the sleeves through which you stick your arms get the use of your hands back. The ends of the sleeves have a semi-circle of cloth cut away to form a hook-shape, and are an excellent place to keep your sandwiches.

The MA gown is longer than the BA gown, reaching to the mid-calf.

MEng, MMath and MSci gowns

The MEng, MMath and MSci gowns are identical. The gown is the same as the MA gown, with the addition of a circle of cord with a button in the centre on the sleeve above the arm slit.  This embellishment is fondly known as the "wheel of science".

The MPhil gown is the same as the MA gown, with the addition of a button on the shoulder, a button just above the arm slit, and cord connecting the two.

The PhD gown is the same as the MA gown, with the addition of "Doctors’ lace, four inches (10 cm) in length" (Doctors' lace is a pattern resembling a row of lacy squares) just above the arm slit. On Scarlet Days, PhDs wear a festal gown, which is either the MA or the PhD gown but with facings of scarlet cloth all the way down the front lapels.

Cambridge SU does not deal in PhD gowns, because by the time they require one most people will no longer be members!

Authoritative descriptions of all the University's gowns, including the less common gowns not described above, is given by  Chapter 2 § 14 of the University's Ordinances .

Multiple degrees

Graduates with multiple degrees do not (usually) wear multiple gowns. Instead, they wear the gown of their highest degree. From lowest to highest, the order of seniority for common degrees is:

Graduates of other universities

Ba status gown.

BA status is held by graduate students at the University who do not already possess a Cambridge degree and are under the age of 24. The BA status gown is identical to the BA gown, except that it does not have the strings. A BA gown can easily pass as a BA status gown by tucking the strings in to the shoulder yoke.  

MA status gown

MA status is held by graduate students at the University who do not already possess a Cambridge degree and are 24 or older. If you hold BA status, and are not Graduated from the University, and turn 24, you can upgrade to an MA Gown. Like the BA equivalent, the MA status gown is an MA gown without the strings – an MA gown can likewise pass as an MA status gown by tucking in the strings.

Undergraduates

Each college chooses its own undergraduate gown.  The "standard" undergraduate gown is like a BA gown, but shorter. Colleges may then prescribe various alterations and embellishments to differentiate their own undergraduates' gowns.

For example, the undergraduate gown at mature/graduate colleges is the standard gown with a blue cord and button hitching up the sleeves; and the undergraduate gowns for colleges that were founded as women-only institutions do not have the arm slit (the better to preserve their undergraduates' modesty).

Undergraduate gowns usually come in one size only, and are meant to reach to the knees.  Descriptions of each college's undergraduate gown are given in the  CUH&GS Gown Guide .

Summary flowchart

The size of gown you require depends on the style of gown: BA-style gowns are intended to reach just below the knees, whereas MA-style gowns are intended to reach the mid-calf.

To calculate your gown size, take your height in inches and either subtract 18'' for BA-style gowns, or subtract 16'' for MA-style gowns.

Official gowns

Your gown will include a hood and cap, and will vary slightly depending on the type of degree that you are receiving.

Ede and Ravenscroft are our gown supplier as well as our official photographer.

Only graduands wearing the correct University of York academic dress will be permitted to take full part in their ceremony. We have appointed Ede and Ravenscroft as our official supplier and they are able to provide the correct academic dress for you.

The deadline for ordering your gown is Wednedsay 10 July 2024 . Gowns ordered after the deadline will cost more and take longer to collect on the day of your ceremony.

How to dress

We ask that graduands and their guests dress formally for the occasion. Many graduands and guests choose to wear a suit, or clothing with a similar level of formality.

For graduands, a buttoned shirt or blouse is useful for securing their gown's hood. Graduands and guests are welcome to wear national, traditional or military dress if relevant.

Collecting and returning gowns

Gowns can be collected from Hendrix Hall on the day of your ceremony. We advise you to allow at least an hour for gown collection as there may be queues. You need to be ready to be seated in Central Hall 45 minutes before the start of your ceremony.

Gowns should be returned to the Exhibition Centre (P/L/002) on the same day that your graduation ceremony takes place. Return by 7pm for weekday ceremonies and 3.30pm for weekend ceremonies.

Regalia Information

Full academic regalia is required for all degree candidates participating at the University of Kentucky Commencement ceremony. It is the responsibility of the degree candidate to secure academic regalia prior to the ceremony. 

Inventory will also be available for purchase in-person at Grad Salute  and will be at the UK Bookstore while supplies last. Doctoral students MUST order their regalia online as it is not available to be purchased in-person.

Frequently asked questions, do i need to wear a cap and gown for commencement.

Yes. Full academic regalia is required for all degree candidates participating at the University of Kentucky Commencement.

What is the sizing for regalia?

Sizing for regalia is purchased by height categories ranging from 4'9" to 6'8". If purchasing your regalia online, you will be prompted to select your appropriate measurements depending on which product you are purchasing. If purchasing in-person at Grad Salute or the UK Bookstore, the associate will guide you through the selection process.

Where can I buy my cap and gown?

Bachelor's and Master's regalia are available for purchase either online or at Grad Salute . Subsequently, they will be available at the UK Bookstore while supplies last. It's important to note that doctoral students must place their regalia orders online, as the in-person purchase option is not available for them. 

What is the deadline to order regalia online?

The deadline to order regalia is April 1 in order for your academic attire to arrive on time. Graduates ordering doctoral regalia should place their orders by March 1.

It is recommend that you place your online order as soon as possible to prevent any shipping delays.

I don't need my regalia anymore. Can I donate it?

Yes! If you would like to donate your regalia to our office, we would be happy to accept it. These donations can be dropped off in the administration offices on the 1st floor of the Gatton Student Center M-F 8-5 pm.

I'm graduating with Academic Distinction. What color cords do I get?

For Academic Distinction, honor cords are typically awarded to undergraduate students graduating with a bachelor's degree. Graduate and doctoral students do not receive honor cords for Academic Distinction.

Our  UK style   Tudor Bonnets   are the perfect accompaniment to your  PhD  or  Doctoral  attire .  Made from the highest quality velvet, and with a durable and comfortable design, they are available in Cardinal Red (gold cord), Royal Blue (gold cord), Black (Maroon cord) and Black (Gold cord). American style   Doctoral Tams   are also available. The traditional Tudor bonnet is a round-brimmed cap which has a soft crown, with a cord encircling the hat with a hanging tassel. During the Tudor times the tudor bonnet was frequently worn in England.

We will ship to some foreign locations. Such locations generally include Canada, USA, South America, Japan and a few other locations. You can check if your country is available by simulating placing an order on our website. We can also place the order over the phone if you do not find your country. However because such shipments often involve the peculiarities of the various tariffs trade and import/export laws around the globe we may not be able to ship some orders overseas due to the cost of researching the laws for that location.

International orders may be subject to customs/duty charges, as well as any VAT or country specific taxes that may apply. Such responsibilities are shouldered by the customer.

What is the academic dress for ceremonies, and how can I book it?

In 2007 King’s was granted degree-awarding powers in its own right. One of the impacts of securing its own degree-awarding powers was the need for King’s to design its own academic dress. We are most grateful to Dame Vivienne Westwood for the major role she played in bringing the academic dress, which is based on a medieval design, up to date. Through her reworking of the traditional robe, Vivienne Westwood hoped to “link the past, the present and the future”. The new King’s academic dress design was approved by the university and does not include a mortarboard. Important to know: Academic dress must be worn by all students/graduates, who should also be in smart clothing underneath the gown (no jeans or trainers are allowed). How do I book my graduation gown?

Gown hire is provided by Ede & Ravenscroft and you can  book your gown online  or by calling 01223 86 1854. You must book your gown by approximately 3 weeks prior to your graduation ceremony. Most students will receive a King's College London award and will therefore need a King's College London gown. However, if you are expecting to receive a University of London award please log a case and let us know, and we will be able to advise you on ordering your gown. Important to know : The only approved gown supplier for King's College London is Ede and Ravenscroft. Please be wary of alternative gown companies that offer cheaper rates (including Churchill Gowns) as they do not have patents to produce King's College London academic dress.   

What colour will the hood be on my gown?

The colour of your hood will be the colours of your faculty. The King’s faculty colours are as below:

Does my gown hire include a hat?

For graduates receiving a King's College London award the gown and hood don’t feature a hat/cap (officially known as a ‘mortarboard’) as part of their design, and so won’t be included in your gown hire. However, many students like to wear mortarboards in their photographs, and so we have a selection available at the photography booths on graduation days. You can use these free of charge; just let us know at the photography booth you’d like to use one. Alternatively, you can hire a mortarboard hat for a small fee for use during graduation event from Ede & Ravenscroft Private Hire service on 01223 20 5617. Important to know : Since the hats don’t form part of the official academic dress, you will not be allowed to wear it when crossing the stage, and any students hiring hats will be asked to remove them during the ceremony itself.

What happens if I've completed the Associateship of  King's College?

If you're graduating with a King’s College London award and have completed the Associateship of King's College (AKC), you will wear a black epitoge embroidered with the University's lion 'Reggie'. The epitoge is a short streamer of black fabric that matches the fabric of the university's gowns, and is buttoned to the left shoulder as part of your academic dress.

This will be given to you to attach to your gown as you are checked before you cross the stage. The epitoge will be collected by an usher after you have crossed the stage. 

Important to know : epitoges cannot be ordered through Ede & Ravenscroft. They are provided by the Graduation Office based on information from the Dean's office. Please contact us about this through our Ceremonies & Events contact form should you have any queries. 

Can I use a different gown hire company?

The only approved gown supplier for King's College London is Ede & Ravenscroft . Please be wary of alternative gown companies that offer cheaper rates (including Churchill Gowns) because they do not have patents to produce King's College London academic dress. The university is also not affiliated with any certificate framing companies, including King’s Photo Frames and Momento Frames.

Can I purchase my gown instead of hiring?

If you prefer to purchase your gown instead of hiring, you can. You can purchase it online or by calling 01223 86 1854. If you are a clergy graduate wishing to purchase a King's hood to be worn with your choir dress, please use the  Ede & Ravenscroft contact form .

Important to know : These hoods can’t be worn on the day of the ceremony as they are designed specifically to be worn with choir dress.

Can I cancel my gown hire?

If you ordered your gown online you may cancel the order via the website – Ede & Ravenscroft gown hire , but this must be done no later than 7 days before the ceremony . If you booked your gown by telephone, you will need to request your cancellation either by email  or by writing to: Ede & Ravenscroft Ltd, Unit A Denny Industrial Centre, Waterbeach, Cambridge CB5 9QD Important to know : The refund will have an administration fee of £1.50.

What if I need to defer my ceremony to a later date?

If following your gown booking your situation changes, and you will be re-sitting exams and intend to attend a future ceremony, you can request that your booking and payment retained and transferred to a future ceremony. You will need to notify Ede & Ravenscroft of this, and let the company know the date of the next ceremony as soon as you can. Important to know : If you don’t intend to come to a future ceremony after re-sitting your exams, no refund will be made.
