Economy class is the most affordable way to fly on Qatar Airways, which offers service from nine U.S. cities. The airline has a major hub in Doha, the capital of Qatar, providing U.S. travelers with a reasonably priced option into the Middle East region for their trip.

Here’s a rundown of what you can expect if you’re looking to book an economy class fare with Qatar.

What to expect when flying economy with Qatar Airways

One major reason people will choose a higher fare class is to save money on checked bags, but since Qatar Airways has a unique set of rules when it comes to baggage allowance, it’s worth describing in more detail.

The specific number and weight of bags you’re allowed to carry with you on your trip depends on the route you’re flying and the cabin class of the original ticket you purchased (even if you’ve later upgraded your ticket).

On certain routes, there is a maximum weight allowed, on others it’s a bag limit.

Check in baggage chart

For the routes subject to weight limits, there is no limit in terms of the number of bags you can bring. The combined weight must be under the weight limit.

Qatar boards in zones with economy generally going toward the end. If you have Oneworld Sapphire Status and fly economy, you'll still get access to priority boarding. Your preference to board early may largely depend on if you need overhead bin space for your single carry-on (more on that below) or if you prefer to be the last to board (to spend as little time as possible in your economy seat).

The size of the current Qatar Airways economy class seats are about average compared with those on other long haul economy flights. The good news is Qatar has plans to roll out a swanky new economy experience that will likely make it one of the better non-premium cabin experiences. Upgraded economy tickets and seat selection

Qatar Airways economy cabins have four fare classes to choose from including promo, classic, convenience and comfort. Promo fares are just that — promotions — so they’re not always available. They also have the most restrictive fare rules.

Classic fares are the next cheapest, but they come with a price: You cannot choose your own seat. These tickets also earn the least award miles.

Convenience fares allow you to choose your seat and earn more miles.

Comfort fares allow you to earn the most miles, choose a preferred seat and have the best upgrade rates.

Tips for Qatar economy flights

Avoid economy if you think you may want to upgrade later.

Qatar Airways baggage allowance and lounge access are based on the original ticket rules. This means that if you originally book a cheap economy class ticket and later upgrade it, you still won’t get lounge access or added baggage weight limits.

Leave the snacks at home

Qatar Airways operates a diverse fleet of narrowbody and widebody jets from both Airbus and Boeing, so its onboard offerings – including seats – vary greatly depending upon the route one flies and the aircraft deployed for the service. The Boeing 777 continues to feature on its network even though the modern 787s and Airbus A350s are gradually taking over. Here, we'll examine the best seats on the airline's 777 airplanes, should you find yourself flying on one.

Diverse 777 fleet

The Boeing 777 is one of many aircraft types in Qatar Airways' fleet, but the airline has fitted them out in several configurations – six for its original aircraft and two others in planes leased from Cathay Pacific and Virgin Australia.

Some of these widebodies are more densely configured, while others are premium heavy or have different business class seats. Then, there are the aforementioned examples that previously belonged to Cathay Pacific and Virgin Australia, some of which include premium economy seating. In this article, we will look at Qatar's original 777s with six different layouts.

While seats with more legroom are generally accepted as being superior (unless they're annoyingly close to the lavatories), especially on long-haul flights that these 777s mainly operate, other factors, such as window, aisle, and middle seats can depend upon personal preferences and whether a person is traveling alone, in a pair or group. So, let's see what Qatar Airways offers on its Boeing 777s.

The Different Tiers Of Qatar Airways' Privilege Club

Qatar Airways' long-range 777s come with the following two configurations:

• 42 QSuites in business class and 230 economy seats
• 42 MiniPods in business class and 234 economy seats

Considered an upgrade to its previous business class product, the QSuites are based on the Collins Aerospace platform and are arranged with forward-facing and rear-facing seats in alternate rows in a 1-2-1 layout.

All come with unrestricted aisle access, but if you're a solo traveler who prefers a window seat, then seats A and K in rows 1, 3, 5, 8, and 10 are your best bet, as they are closer to the window than seats B and J in other rows, which can also technically be called window seats. However, the 'closer' window seats require the passenger to face in the opposite direction of the aircraft's movement, something to keep in mind in case it bothers you.

If you're assigned a middle seat and want more privacy, try to avoid odd-numbered rows as those seats are next to each other compared to even-numbered seats, which give you more space from your neighbor. If being close to the toilet or galley is a dealbreaker, it's best to avoid rows 6, 7, and 8.

Qatar Airways Partners: Where You Can Earn Avios In 2024

The economy cabin is laid out in a 3-4-3 configuration, but you could find some hidden gems after some research. The entire row 16 is suitable for those looking for more legroom, as these are bulkhead seats. Seats 19D and 29D are also good options as they're the corner seats in the middle row, providing aisle access, and have no seats in the front, as the two middle sections in the rows ahead of them only have three seats.

Row 27 has emergency exit seats, so if you're OK with not having your bags in front of you, the extra legroom can be handy for long-haul flights.

The only significant difference for the other type of 777-200LR is the business class cabin, which has the older style pod seats in a 2-2-2 configuration. For window lovers, seats A and K are the best options, and the entire first row offers a little more exclusivity without any row in front of it. Row 5 is toilet-facing, so it's probably not the best of options.

The economy section has a similar layout to the other 777-200LR, with minor exceptions, and all rules for that aircraft apply to this one as well, except that the previously described seat 19D is numbered 18D in this version.

Four configurations in Boeing 777-300ERs

Qatar’s 777-300ERs come in the following four seat configurations:

• 24 QSuites in business class and 388 seats in economy
• 42 QSuites in business class and 312 seats in economy
• 24 MiniPods in business class and 388 seats in economy
• 42 MiniPods in business class and 316 seats in economy

777-300ERs with QSuites

For the planes with QSuites in the business class section, all the observations made for the premium cabin in the 777-200LR with QSuites apply. The only exception is that in the 777-300ER with 24 QSuites, there are only six rows of business class seats, so it does not have rows 7 and 8.

However, the difference is in the economy section. On the 777-300ER with 388 economy seats, the entire row 16 has massive legroom, but the tradeoff is that they face the toilets. Rows 30 and 42 are emergency exit rows, also giving ample legroom. Again, seats 18D, 32D, and 44D on this plane have all the advantages of 18D/19D of the 777-200LRs, as discussed above.

How Do Singapore Airlines' & Qatar Airways' Luxury Double Suites Compare?

Those traveling in pairs will find seats A/B and J/K in row 29 and A/B and J/K in row 55 more suitable as they don't have a third seat next to them. Both rows, however, are close to the toilet, and row 55 is right at the back of the plane. The last rows of both the 777-200LRs also have these options.

For the 777-300ER with 312 seats, row 16 and the middle seats of row 17 are bulkhead-facing with the most legroom. Rows 23 and 35 are emergency exit rows with good legroom as well. As discussed above, seats 19D, 25D, and 37D have all the advantages described for seats 18D/19D for the planes above.

777-300ERs with MiniPods

In terms of the best seats in the economy section, almost all rules that apply to the QSuite -300ER with 388 seats and 312 seats apply to MiniPods -300ER with 388 and 316 economy seats, respectively.

As far as business class is concerned, the layout with 42 MiniPods offers the same advantages as that of the -200LR in the same configuration. The one offering 24 business class MiniPods with four rows has the same advantages as the first four rows of the -300ER with 42 MiniPods.

The ultimate guide to Qatar Qsuite

Qatar Airways has boasted some of the world's best business-class seats and service for the last decade. However, the airline raised the bar with the unveiling of its revolutionary Qsuite in March 2017. These were the first suite-style business-class seats, complete with closing doors and layouts that could be configured into four-person family or work areas and even double beds .

What was even more astonishing was the speed with which the airline rolled out the suites aboard its fleet. The first flight with them went into service in June 2017 , just three months after the unveiling.

Since then, Qatar Airways has put the Qsuite into service on many of its flagship routes, such as those between its hub at Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha, Qatar, and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Heathrow Airport (LHR) in London and Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), among other destinations. Here's why you'll want to experience the Qsuite and how you can book it using miles.

Qatar Qsuite appears on versions of four different aircraft types: select Boeing 777-200LRs , 777-300ERs , Airbus A350-900s and all of Qatar Airways' A350-1000s . What might be confusing for flyers, though, is that Qatar Airways also flies 777s and A350-900s with older seat types . Luckily, we have a guide that explains how to tell if your flight has the new suites on them, and we'll get into the specific routes and flight numbers they're currently on below.

Both the 777-200LR (operating on some flights to O'Hare International Airport (ORD), Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Dulles International Airport (IAD) and all flights to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and 777-300ER (operating on some flights to Chicago and Washington) have 42 Qsuites spread across two cabins. The forward cabin has six rows for a total of 24 seats, and the back cabin has five rows with a total of 18 seats.

The A350-1000 has 46 Qsuites in two cabins: the forward one has the bulk of them, with 38 in 10 rows, while the small aft cabin has just eight seats in two rows. The A350-900s with Qsuite have 36 of them in a single cabin of nine rows.

Qsuite amenities

Let's get down to what makes these suites so special . Like many of the other best business-class seats out there, they are arranged in a staggered 1–2–1 pattern.

The odd-numbered rows have rear-facing seats , while even-numbered rows have forward-facing ones. The rear-facing seats on the sides are closer to the window for more privacy, while those facing forward are closer to the aisle. In addition, those in the center sections are closer together when they're rear-facing and farther apart in the front-facing rows.

If you're confused by the configuration, you're not alone. But check out your flight's seat map either on SeatGuru or our sister site ExpertFlyer (owned by TPG's parent company, Red Ventures) and you can easily figure out what your seat will be like.

Each Qsuite reclines to a fully lie-flat bed. Seat width is 21.5 inches on the A350 (either model) and 21 inches on the B777 models. Bed length is the same in all models: 80 inches.

Certain blocs of Qsuites in the center section can be combined into a few configurations. The seats that are set close together can become a double bed for couples or families traveling together.

There are also quad blocs in the center section where four seats can be opened up to create a coworking or leisure space for groups traveling together.

In addition, Qsuite has technological bells and whistles like light-up "Do Not Disturb" signs and 21.5-inch entertainment monitors with touch screen controls and over 4,000 menu options.

The media panels have universal power ports, USB ports, HDMI and contactless NFC capabilities so you can stream preselected playlists from the Qatar Airways app on your smartphone over the system.

In terms of soft amenities, Qatar Airways flights attendants hand out BRIC's amenity kits stocked with Castello Monte Vibiano skin care products and will provide The White Company sleepwear to passengers on long-haul and overnight flights.

Which routes can you currently fly in Qsuite? Many routes were suspended or altered during the pandemic, but these are the available routes with flights operating to/from Qatar:

Because of its membership in Oneworld, you have a few choices for using airline miles to book awards on Qatar Airways. Here are the four top ones with sample mileage requirements between Doha and various destinations.

American Airlines AAdvantage

Have you been stocking up on AAdvantage miles all these years? Now could be your chance to put them to use.

• Doha to Europe: 42,500 miles one-way, 85,000 miles round trip.
• Doha to the US: 70,000 miles one-way, 140,000 miles round trip.
• Doha to Asia 2 (China, Hong Kong, Thailand): 40,000 miles one-way, 80,000 miles round trip.
• Doha to Australia: 80,000 miles one-way, 160,000 round trip.

Transfer partners: Marriott Bonvoy and Bilt Rewards .

British Airways and Qatar Airways Avios

After Qatar Airways adopted Avios as its loyalty currency, British Airways matched its award pricing and lowered fuel surcharges. You will find identical award pricing and similar taxes and fees if you book with either Avios program.

• Doha to Paris: 43,000 Avios one-way, 86,000 round trip.
• Doha to US non-stop routes: 70,000 miles one-way, 140,000 miles round trip.
• Doha to Bangkok: 50,000 miles one-way, 100,000 miles round trip.

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

This program devalued in June 2018 , but might still be worth looking into for Qsuite awards. There isn't a published award chart for partner awards, but you can price out your tickets on Asia Miles' website .

• Doha to Europe: 61,000 miles one-way, 122,000 miles round trip.
• Doha to New York: 90,000 miles one-way, 180,000 miles round trip.
• Doha to Hong Kong: 61,000 miles one-way, 122,000 miles round trip.

One major downside to booking with Asia Miles is high taxes and fees. On a one-way flight from New York to Doha, you will pay $509 in addition to the miles you spend.

Transfer partners: American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Brex Cash, Capital One, Citi ThankYou Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy.

Taking into consideration taxes and fees -- as well as transfer partners -- your best bets are likely to be American Airlines AAdvantage miles or Avios. Your taxes and fees vary by route, but expect them to be under $100 round trip to the U.S. using AAdvantage miles and $150 to $250 with Avios, depending on the route.

Searching for and booking awards

We have several posts on this topic, including How to Search and Book Qatar Airways' Qsuite With Miles . However, as a refresher, the best way to search for Oneworld award availability is through the British Airways or Qantas websites.

If you're booking with American AAdvantage, you can also search on American's website. However, it's worth double-checking your results with the British Airways or Qantas website, as American's website sometimes fails to show all available award space.

If you find a flight on British Airways' website that isn't bookable on American's website, call American's AAdvantage desk to book it. If you plan to use Asia Miles, you can search availability through Asia Miles' own award search engine instead.

Keep a few things in mind before going on a mad dash searching for awards on all these routes. From my own personal experience, Qatar Airways awards tend to show up either far in advance or close in, but generally not in the few months out when most of us like to plan our trips.

The airline also tends to release more award space on newly-announced routes or when it swaps out aircraft on a route, so keep up on the news here on TPG to help you snag a seat on the route that you want.

Finally, be persistent. If you have dates and redemptions in mind, just search every few days and see what might come up. You might be surprised to find award seats released on some of the flights you're looking for.

So as not to end on a down note, though award space can be scarce, it is still available — even on premier routes like between Doha and New York and Doha and London. Here are a few sample awards I found to whet your appetite.

Bottom line

Qatar Airways' Qsuite offers some of the best (if not the best ) business-class seats in the world. Closing doors, fluid configurations and top-notch service all make a flight in them nothing short of memorable. Luckily, it's also possible to book them with a number of different types of partner airline miles. My feeling is that if you want specific seats & aren't happy sitting in any seat available, eg 2 middle seats, then reserve seats in advance

Forget other’s experience it goes with out saying some will have been able to get the two seats together and others won’t. This will not help you in the least

Just book them the seats

I always book the seats I want in advance

I also refuse to play musical chairs for passengers who want my seat to sit with their spouse/friend etc (except if it is a class upgrade)

Why not speak with mum and dad and explain and show them the aircraft seat plan. I suspect they will then ask you to book preassigned seats for them in an area of the aircraft they can become familiar with. They might be more than happy to contribute to the cost knowing where they are likely to be on the aircraft(s).

I always book my seaf as l choose where l want to sit and not put in the middle seat. If I'm travelling with my other half, we book aisle and middle.

Unless you want your parents to get stuck in the middle seats between two strangers, you should really book seats in advance. Good seats are usually taken before the OLCI.

Two seats on the Upper Deck of the A380-800 Two Class (if available) would be my choice.

If you wait, it's unlikely you won't find two seats together, but they may not be middle and window.

Qatar will not deliberately split them up but if there are no 2 seats together left, then they will not move people to accomodate them.

I’m another that will decline to move to accomodate folk who chose to gamble unless there is a young child involved and the other seat is comparable or better.
