Traditionally, teachers are not trained to teach professional courses. Thus, they learn even the essential principles of teaching through experience, ‘on the job’. This leads to a less than satisfactory in-class learning experience for most students in many courses, except if the teacher has a natural orientation to teaching. This course is aimed to introduce the essentials of facilitation of student learning (‘teaching’) in an interesting way to any teacher of professional courses, with a special focus on engineering. Further, education is a vast, old area of research, with rigorous, evidence-based knowledge that is useful for the facilitation of learning. However, the knowledge is not in an easily accessible form for teachers without experience in education research. This course also aims to begin bridging that gap, by appropriately introducing research in education to engineering teachers.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

All engineering teachers and aspiring teachers.

INDUSTRY SUPPORT

Any industry or start-up interested in education.

Dear participants, Welcome! to the course on effective engineering “teaching” in practice. It is nice to see the interest toward this course. We expect our participants to have diverse backgrounds, and we have made special efforts to cater to the needs of all our participants. We look forward to your feed-back. Pallavi, the research scholar working with gk for her Ph.D., will be your teaching assistant for this course.  Together, we will address your learning needs.  The course formally opens on 22 nd  January 2024. The lessons and assignment for the first week have already been made available.  As given in the course introduction page, this course will consist of 12 major aspects that will be presented in 4 weeks. There are many `lectures' of varying duration with some as short as about 15 min, in which the information will be presented. The main reference book for the course is ‘Teaching Engineering’ by Wankat and Oreovicz, 2 nd edition, Purdue University Press, 2015. To communicate effectively the various aspects, some specific examples would have been used in the lectures. The request is to please pay attention to the pedagogical aspects and the underlying engineering principles , rather than on the specific subject. Only the aspects that can be commonly appreciated by all engineers (e.g. mass balance based on the law of conservation of mass) have been chosen for the examples, in the context of a particular subject. The particular subject was chosen to provide the full backing of our experience to effectively communicate the various principles. Mathematics has a different flavour, and hence was not chosen for the examples. Also, the specific subject aspects will NOT appear in the assignments or the exam – this will become clear to you as you do the assignments. There will be assignments, one per week, which need to be submitted by a meet-line (about 8 days after it is made available). The assignments are designed to improve the understanding of the course material.  The three best assignments out of four will carry 25% weight toward the final marks, as required by NPTEL.  The proctored exam will be on the same lines as the assignments, which will carry 75% weight toward the final marks. The dates for the exam are available in the course introduction page.  Please ignore the minor changes (TA name, etc.) in the videos.  Look forward to an enjoyable course for all of us. Best wishes, G. K. Suraishkumar, Edamana Prasad, and Richa Verma

ABOUT THE COURSE Traditionally, teachers are not trained to teach professional courses. INTENDED AUDIENCE All engineering teachers and aspiring teachers. CORE/ELECTIVE : Elective UG/PG : PG PRE-REQUISITES  :  None INDUSTRIES THAT WILL RECOGNIZE THIS COURSE Any industry or start-up interested in education.

Drawbacks in NPTEL and Exam Center(JNN Attended College)

JNN COLLEGE IS Far for Thiruvallur people even those who are from Thiruvallur dist very worst allocation by nptel to say the food we are paying money for but honestly not even worth no proper quantity of food, if I ask some rice they are saying we are under CCTV, only limited quantity only
