If you’re looking for a well-paying, in-demand job that rewards problem-solving skills, a career in information technology might be a good fit for you. The field of IT encompasses computer systems, programming languages, software, data, information processing, and storage to create, secure, and exchange electronic data. 

Even with recent layoffs in the tech sector, Gaurav Jetley, assistant professor of computer information systems in Colorado State University ’s College of Business, says not to worry.

“IT jobs are still in demand,” Jetley says. “We will see more jobs open up later this year, hopefully.”

And it appears to be true: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 377,500 job openings are projected each year, with a median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations of $104,420 in May 2023.

For those who are interested in pursuing IT jobs, here are 10 of the field’s top-paying roles.

1. Chief Technology Officer  

Top-paying companies: Capital One, Bloomberg, AFL-CIO

Description: Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) manage an organization’s technological needs and oversee its research and development efforts. CTOs consider the needs of an organization and make investments to help them reach their goals. They also use technology to improve products that serve customers.

Average base salary: $186,703, according to Indeed .

Top-paying locations: San Diego, Calif. ($298,291), Seattle, Wash. ($255,930), New York, N.Y. ($224,111), according to Indeed .

2. Vice President of Information Technology

Top-paying companies: Oracle, Centene, USAA

Description: Vice Presidents (VPs) of Information Technology are tasked with overseeing the IT operations of an organization, including its infrastructure, security, data management, and software applications. VPs of IT direct and manage schedules, IT plans, programs, and policies related to an organization’s management of information systems, computer services, data processing, network communications, and business operations.

They also ensure proper communication between chief executives and the IT department.

6. Solutions Architect  

Description: Solutions Architects develop, build, and implement an organization’s systems architecture to meet customer and business needs. This role evaluates an organization’s existing system architecture and figures out solutions to change, improve, and modernize. 

“You usually have a solutions architect in companies that are employing a cloud solution. They design these solutions,” Jetley says. “These days we’re seeing an uptick in cloud solutions architects because of AI. Most AI is running in the cloud these days.”

7. Chief Information Officer

Description: Chief Information Officers (CIOs) are responsible for managing and implementing an organization’s information and computer technology systems. This executive position figures out which technologies will benefit an organization, improve business processes, and integrate systems that help an organization achieve their goals.

“This position is not about the nitty gritty but looking at the overall strategy for the entire company,” Jetley says. “They also take care of the implementation of systems.”

8. DevOps Engineer

“These are very technically savvy folks that basically manage the entire IT infrastructure,” Jetley says.

9. Information Security and Cybersecurity Engineers and Architects  

Top-paying companies: Capital One, MITRE, Honeywell

Description: Information Security and Cybersecurity Engineers and Architects are IT professionals who work alongside developers to make sure that software, systems, applications, and networks are secure. 

These roles may also respond to security risks faced by organizations, such as cyberattacks, security incidents, and data breaches. While architects are responsible for designing cybersecurity systems, engineers focus on building and maintaining cybersecurity infrastructure.

“These are folks who are at the forefront of technology,” Jetley says. “They have to be proactive. They have to be updated on what’s happening, what kind of new threats are emerging, and to take steps to mitigate these things.”

Average base salary: $112,619, according to Indeed .

10. Principal Software Engineer

Description: Principal Software Engineers lead teams of engineers to create high-quality, scalable software to achieve an organization’s goals. This role develops and tests software; they are also responsible for reviewing code written by other engineers, identifying the right technology to meet an organization’s needs, and creating architecture for complex software systems.

Average base salary: $111,822, according to Indeed .

If you’re willing to put in the time and effort, the field of IT is a rewarding one for continuous learners who love to problem solve. For those who are just getting started, it’s a good idea to pursue certifications or a bachelor’s degree related to IT. Jetley recommends concentrating on a specialty.

“Have a general understanding of many specialties, but digging deep into one specialty is key,” Jetley says. “For that, you have to spend a considerable amount of time learning these systems.”

The fear of AI taking away your career is only valid if you do not develop AI-proof skills

An estimated 22% of workers stated that they feared the risk of AI (artificial intelligence) taking their job, while 72% of Fortune 500 Chief Human Resources Officers predicted that AI could indeed replace roles within their organization within the next three years, in a recent Gallup survey released in February.

According to the survey and Gallup analysis, these fears are underpinned by the FOMO (fear of missing out)—being left behind due to not having the skills to render one capable to meet the demands of AI-driven jobs, in addition to the worry that this new technology will completely eliminate their current roles.

While this fear is certainly valid, you are not completely powerless.

There are things that you can do to reduce the likelihood that you will be caught out, which will strengthen and future-proof your career. For example, approximately 45% of U.S. respondents to an Indeed survey for the Global Future of Work Report upskilled to stay competitive in a tech-driven labor market.

Additionally, 40% of employees have seen employees with entirely different careers enter the market later into their career, the report noted.

For example, you can take time now to develop high-income skills, which require higher levels of specialism and expertise. You should also figure out which skills are irreplaceable by AI, because these will help you to become exceptional in your career, move up the ladder, and/or make a career pivot, regardless of your current job. They can help set you apart from other job candidates, and place you in a favorable position to receive a pay increase, promotion, or gain more business opportunities as a freelancer.

These high-income skills can be applied in a wide variety of contexts, so even if your job becomes obsolete, you can transfer them elsewhere—as long as you start demonstrating them now.

1. Problem-Solving Skills

Problem-solving is something that AI cannot replicate fully. Although there are many ways and tools in which AI can be used to fix problems and perform analysis, problem-solving skills still remain the unique prerogative of human beings, and this skill set is even listed in LinkedIn's Most In-Demand Skills of 2024 report .

This is because although AI can "think" logically and pull up data, it does not excel in creativity and out-of-the-box approaches. This is where you, the human, would come in.

2. Personal Branding Skills

Another hot skill on the rise is personal branding. Personal branding is when you are essentially your own PR agent. You consciously and intentionally influence others' perception of you within your industry, based on the way you project yourself in your job, in your business if self-employed, on social media, and at networking events.

Learning personal branding skills is a powerful tool that can distinguish you from others in your sector, even those who may have more experience than you. Being able to sell yourself confidently and establishing a solid personal brand increases others' trust in you—from stakeholders, to customers, to your employer. Consequently, personal branding skills opens up many new business and career opportunities which would otherwise remain closed.

3. Communication Skills

Communication skills ranks highly as LinkedIn's no.1 skill for 2024, and for good reason. With the increase of remote and hybrid working, and the use of artificial intelligence tools, in addition to multigenerational working, there are plenty of barriers to transparent and collaborative communication.

If you take time to polish your communication skills, learning how to practice active listening, communicate with empathy, and know how to use the right communication tools to get your message across while communicating concisely and with clarity, you will be able to set yourself apart as a highly effective team member, and will be extremely successful in your role as a leader or manager.

With communication, you can negotiate your way to higher pay, motivate team morale and increase performance levels, quell misunderstandings, and present your ideas to gain buy-in from stakeholders. Now that is a skill worth honing. It's pretty easy to see how this correlates with a higher salary or increased earnings.

AI tools can certainly help you refine your communication (as is the case with AI-powered email tools such as Lyne AI), but you need to be careful that you do not depend on it so much that you are unable to communicate effectively in everyday life, offline.

AI cannot replicate human creativity and communication

So, should you be worried that AI will take your job? Perhaps. Should you worry that it will take away your career and your chances of securing higher pay? Certainly not.

 A job rarely goes 100% according to plan, so hiring managers are more likely to hire you if you seem like you can handle unexpected challenges while staying calm and logical.

But how do they measure this?

Hiring managers will ask you interview questions about your problem-solving skills, and they might also look for examples of problem-solving on your resume and cover letter. 

In this article, I’m going to share a list of problem-solving examples and sample interview answers to questions like, “Give an example of a time you used logic to solve a problem?” and “Describe a time when you had to solve a problem without managerial input. How did you handle it, and what was the result?”

  • Researching solutions to an academic problem online, via Google or other methods
  • Using problem solving and creative thinking to obtain an internship or other work opportunity during school after struggling at first

How To Answer “Tell Us About a Problem You Solved”

When you answer interview questions about problem-solving scenarios, or if you decide to demonstrate your problem-solving skills in a cover letter (which is a good idea any time the job description mentions problem-solving as a necessary skill), I recommend using the STAR method.

STAR stands for:

It’s a simple way of walking the listener or reader through the story in a way that will make sense to them. 

Start by briefly describing the general situation and the task at hand. After this, describe the course of action you chose and why. Ideally, show that you evaluated all the information you could given the time you had, and made a decision based on logic and fact. Finally, describe the positive result you achieved.

How can I communicate complex problem-solving experiences clearly and succinctly?

Before answering any interview question, it’s important to understand why the interviewer is asking the question in the first place.

When it comes to questions about your complex problem-solving experiences, for example, the interviewer likely wants to know about your leadership acumen, collaboration abilities, and communication skills, not the problem itself.

Therefore, your answer should be focused on highlighting how you excelled in each of these areas, not diving into the weeds of the problem itself, which is a common mistake less-experienced interviewees often make.

Tailoring Your Answer Based on the Skills Mentioned in the Job Description

As a recruiter, one of the top tips I can give you when responding to the prompt “Tell us about a problem you solved,” is to tailor your answer to the specific skills and qualifications outlined in the job description. 

Once you’ve pinpointed the skills and key competencies the employer is seeking, craft your response to highlight experiences where you successfully utilized or developed those particular abilities. 

For instance, if the job requires strong leadership skills, focus on a problem-solving scenario where you took charge and effectively guided a team toward resolution. 

By aligning your answer with the desired skills outlined in the job description, you demonstrate your suitability for the role and show the employer that you understand their needs.

Amanda Augustine expands on this by saying:

“Showcase the specific skills you used to solve the problem. Did it require critical thinking, analytical abilities, or strong collaboration? Highlight the relevant skills the employer is seeking.”  

Interview Answers to “Tell Me About a Time You Solved a Problem”

Now, let’s look at some sample interview answers to, “Give me an example of a time you used logic to solve a problem,” or “Tell me about a time you solved a problem,” since you’re likely to hear different versions of this interview question in all sorts of industries.

The example interview responses are structured using the STAR method and are categorized into the top 5 key problem-solving skills recruiters look for in a candidate.

1. Analytical Thinking

Situation: In my previous role as a data analyst , our team encountered a significant drop in website traffic.

Task: I was tasked with identifying the root cause of the decrease.

Action: I conducted a thorough analysis of website metrics, including traffic sources, user demographics, and page performance. Through my analysis, I discovered a technical issue with our website’s loading speed, causing users to bounce. 

Result: By optimizing server response time, compressing images, and minimizing redirects, we saw a 20% increase in traffic within two weeks.

2. Critical Thinking

Situation: During a project deadline crunch, our team encountered a major technical issue that threatened to derail our progress.

Task: My task was to assess the situation and devise a solution quickly.

Action: I immediately convened a meeting with the team to brainstorm potential solutions. Instead of panicking, I encouraged everyone to think outside the box and consider unconventional approaches. We analyzed the problem from different angles and weighed the pros and cons of each solution.

Result: By devising a workaround solution, we were able to meet the project deadline, avoiding potential delays that could have cost the company $100,000 in penalties for missing contractual obligations.

Task: My task was to make a decisive choice that would align with the project goals and maintain team cohesion.

Action: I scheduled a meeting with both team members to understand their perspectives in detail. I listened actively, asked probing questions, and encouraged open dialogue. After carefully weighing the pros and cons of each approach, I made a decision that incorporated elements from both viewpoints.

Result: The decision I made not only resolved the immediate conflict but also led to a stronger sense of collaboration within the team. By valuing input from all team members and making a well-informed decision, we were able to achieve our project objectives efficiently.

4. Communication (Teamwork)

Task: My task was to improve communication channels and foster better teamwork among team members.

Action: I initiated regular cross-departmental meetings to ensure that everyone was on the same page regarding project goals and timelines. I also implemented a centralized communication platform where team members could share updates, ask questions, and collaborate more effectively.

5. Persistence 

Situation: During a challenging sales quarter, I encountered numerous rejections and setbacks while trying to close a major client deal.

Task: My task was to persistently pursue the client and overcome obstacles to secure the deal.

Action: I maintained regular communication with the client, addressing their concerns and demonstrating the value proposition of our product. Despite facing multiple rejections, I remained persistent and resilient, adjusting my approach based on feedback and market dynamics.

Result: After months of perseverance, I successfully closed the deal with the client. By closing the major client deal, I exceeded quarterly sales targets by 25%, resulting in a revenue increase of $250,000 for the company.

Tips to Improve Your Problem-Solving Skills

Throughout your career, being able to showcase and effectively communicate your problem-solving skills gives you more leverage in achieving better jobs and earning more money .

So to improve your problem-solving skills, I recommend always analyzing a problem and situation before acting.

 When discussing problem-solving with employers, you never want to sound like you rush or make impulsive decisions. They want to see fact-based or data-based decisions when you solve problems.

Don’t just say you’re good at solving problems. Show it with specifics. How much did you boost efficiency? Did you save the company money? Adding numbers can really make your achievements stand out.

To get better at solving problems, analyze the outcomes of past solutions you came up with. You can recognize what works and what doesn’t.

Think about how you can improve researching and analyzing a situation, how you can get better at communicating, and deciding on the right people in the organization to talk to and “pull in” to help you if needed, etc.

Finally, practice staying calm even in stressful situations. Take a few minutes to walk outside if needed. Step away from your phone and computer to clear your head. A work problem is rarely so urgent that you cannot take five minutes to think (with the possible exception of safety problems), and you’ll get better outcomes if you solve problems by acting logically instead of rushing to react in a panic.

You can use all of the ideas above to describe your problem-solving skills when asked interview questions about the topic. If you say that you do the things above, employers will be impressed when they assess your problem-solving ability.

Entry-level positions are vanishing with the rise of AI and universities are struggling to prepare students for on-the-job success, leaving many feeling stranded and unqualified. But amidst this challenge lies an opportunity to bridge the gap between education and employment through innovative solutions like work-based learning programs.

Lack of Work-Based Learning Opportunities

According to a recent report from ECMC and VICE Media, a staggering 79% of high school students recognize the importance of on-the-job learning experiences during their postsecondary education. However, only half of them have access to career exploration programs. This glaring disparity underscores the urgent need for a shift in educational paradigms.

A Plea for Universities to Reprioritize

Dr. Hills McBeth said a key issue is focus, funding and scale, stating, “Most traditional higher ed has invested in athletics and alumni engagement and advancement offices rather than investing in employer engagement.”  

WGU is changing that as a university that has prioritized student experience and career outcomes from the start. A nonprofit founded in 1997 by 19 U.S. governors, the online university supports students through job-aligned degree programs crafted with input from employers and built for career success. Organizations that hire WGU grads are reaping the rewards with a healthy 98% of employers saying WGU graduates meet or exceed their expectations. 

Making it Easier for Employers to Connect with Learners

Solving the career-readiness challenge is not just about connecting students with opportunities; it's also about empowering employers, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, to actively participate in shaping the future workforce. Stephenson pointed out that many companies are eager to collaborate and engage with educational institutions to identify and nurture talent, citing the success of Juvo Ventures.

Whether it's through shorter-duration, lower-intensity experiences or more immersive apprenticeships, flexibility is paramount to accommodating the diverse needs of students and employers alike.

There's a growing consensus on the need for clearer, more prescriptive college and career readiness standards. Ryan Craig highlighted the current generic nature of state-level standards and calls for a more tailored approach to ensure students are equipped with the skills demanded by today's job market.

Smartphones Can Now Last 7 Years. Here’s How to Keep Them Working.

Google and Samsung used to update smartphone software for only three years. That has changed.

Every smartphone has an expiration date. That day arrives when the software updates stop coming and you start missing out on new apps and security protections. With most phones, this used to happen after about only three years.

But things are finally starting to change. The new number is seven.

I first noticed this shift when I reviewed Google’s $700 Pixel 8 smartphone in October. Google told me that it had committed to provide software updates for the phone for seven years, up from three years for its previous Pixels, because it was the right thing to do.

I was skeptical that this would become a trend. But this year, Samsung, the most profitable Android phone maker, set a similar software timeline for its $800 Galaxy S24 smartphone . Then Google said it would do the same for its $500 Pixel 8A, the budget version of the Pixel 8, which arrived in stores this week.

Both companies said they had expanded their software support to make their phones last longer. This is a change from how companies used to talk about phones. Not long ago, tech giants unveiled new devices that encouraged people to upgrade every two years. But in the last few years, smartphone sales have slowed down worldwide as their improvements have become more marginal . Nowadays, people want their phones to endure.

Samsung and Google, the two most influential Android device makers, are playing catch-up with Apple, which has traditionally provided software updates for iPhones for roughly seven years. These moves will make phones last much longer and give people more flexibility to decide when it’s time to upgrade.

Google said in a statement that it had expanded its software commitment for the Pixel 8A because it wanted customers to feel confident in Pixel phones. And Samsung said it would deliver seven years of software updates, which increase security and reliability, for all its Galaxy flagship phones from now on.

Here’s what to know about why this is happening and what you can do to make your phone last longer.

Why is this happening?

In the past, Android phone makers said the technical process of providing software updates was very complicated, so to stay profitable, they dropped support after a few years. But tech companies are now under intense external pressure to invest in making their devices last longer.

In 2021, the Federal Trade Commission announced that it would ramp up law enforcement against tech companies that made it difficult to fix and maintain their products. That accelerated the “right to repair” movement, a piece of proposed legislation that required companies to provide the parts, tools and software to extend the lives of their products. In the last few years, states including California, New York, Minnesota and Oregon have enacted such legislation.

Google announced its new commitment for smartphones after it was pressured to make a similar move for its laptops. In September, the company agreed to expand software support for its Chromebook to 10 years , up from eight years, in response to a grass-roots campaign that highlighted how short-lived Google laptops were causing budget crunches in schools .

Nathan Proctor, a director at U.S. PIRG, a nonprofit largely funded by small donors that led the Chromebook campaign, said the new standard of seven years of support for smartphones would have a profound effect.

“It’s a huge win for the environment,” he said. “I want to see more of it.”

What else do I need to do?

Software updates are one big part of what keeps a phone working well, but there are other steps to lengthen smartphone lives, similar to maintaining a car. They include:

Replace the phone battery every two years

The lithium-ion batteries in phones have a finite life. After about two years, the amount of charge they can hold diminishes, and it’s wise to replace the battery.

Replacing a smartphone battery isn’t easy, so it’s best to get help from a professional. To find repair shops that service Pixel and Galaxy phones, you can contact Google and Samsung on their websites. You could also look up a reputable shop nearby with a review site like Yelp or Google Reviews. It typically costs about $100 to replace a battery.

For iPhones, customers can schedule a battery replacement appointment at an Apple retail store through the company’s website . But in my experience, repair centers at Apple Stores are a gamble.

I recently booked an appointment to replace my iPhone 14’s battery at the Apple Store in Emeryville, Calif. When I arrived, the employee said the battery was out of stock, and the nearest store that carried it was a 40-minute drive away.

This was frustratingly inefficient — the Apple site should not have let me book an appointment at a store that didn’t have the battery. Apple said in a statement that when a part needed for repair was not available, a retail employee would find the nearest store to complete the repair or order the replacement part and do the repair when the part arrived.

Instead, I booked an appointment at a local repair shop.

Smartphones are still mostly made of glass, so to make a phone last seven years, it’s wise to invest in a high-quality case. A screen protector is an extra safeguard, though many won’t enjoy how it distorts the picture quality of the screen. Our sister site that reviews products, Wirecutter, recommends cases from brands like Smartish, Spigen and Mujjo, or cases from the phone makers themselves.

Unless you’re very accident prone, I recommend against buying extended warranties because their costs can exceed the cost of a repair.

Smartphones have very few moving parts, so there’s little we have to do to physically maintain them. But most of us neglect cleaning the parts that we rarely look at: charging ports and speaker holes.

Over time, those holes are clogged up with dirt, pocket lint and makeup. That built-up debris can make a phone take longer to charge or a phone call more difficult to hear.

“It’s the belly button lint of cellphones,” said Kyle Wiens, the chief executive of iFixit, a site that publishes instructions and sells parts to repair electronics.

Fortunately, he added, you don’t need a fancy tool. Just use a toothpick to dig out the gunk.

Should this change how I buy phones?

I always recommend buying a product based on the here and now — what it can do for you today, as opposed to what companies say it will do in the future. You should continue to buy a phone based on this principle.

Plenty of people will choose to upgrade sooner for other reasons, like getting a new feature such as a better camera or a longer-lasting battery.

But those who just want to buy a phone that lasts as long as possible should pick one that will be economical to repair when things break. Mr. Wiens said Google’s Pixel phones, whose parts are affordable, fit this criterion. Owners of those phones will now have longer-lasting software to keep up with the hardware.

Community colleges offer clean energy training as climate-related jobs expand across America

DANVILLE, Illinois (AP) — On the south side of Chicago, students learn to work on Rivian electric pickup trucks and SUVs through a new technician program at Olive-Harvey College.

About 150 miles (240 kilometers) south, students at Danville Area Community College in Illinois are taught to troubleshoot massive wind turbines dozens of meters tall, along with climbing and safety.

In Albuquerque, students train on wiring and fixing solar panel installations through Central New Mexico Community College’s electrical trades courses.

And in Boston, students study how to toughen homes and buildings against extreme temperatures at Roxbury Community College’s Center for Smart Building Technology. The focus is on automating and modernizing heating and air conditioning systems so they contribute less to climate change.

All are examples of how students across the United States look to community colleges for up-to-date training for the increasing number of jobs in climate solutions — from electrification, to wind and solar, to energy efficiency, weatherization, protecting water and farmland and more.

Kyle Johnson has long enjoyed working on gasoline-fueled cars. But automobiles are increasingly electric.

“When it came to EVs, I knew that the times are changing, and I didn’t want to be left behind,” said the 34-year-old, now enrolled at Olive-Harvey. “Climate change has a lot to do with my decision.”

The warming planet is fueling the interest of many students like Johnson. The job market was already changing as more businesses sprang up to address climate change, and now legislation, including the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act , is adding more investment, meaning they’ll have plenty of jobs to pursue. Millions of clean energy workers are needed to meet ambitious targets that governments and companies have set to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, so many of these job opportunities are growing faster than overall employment in the U.S .

Instructor Brian Lovell has seen that firsthand.

“While the students are still in the program, they get employed because the demands of industry are so acute,” he said of Roxbury. “We’ve seen an extreme uptick over the past few years.”

Of course, job seekers can also pursue workforce training through local employers and labor unions to gain skills for clean energy trades. But community colleges, taking their cues directly from companies in their regions and from state economic development and labor departments, quickly tailor hands-on training, pairing it with academics, for jobs that are open.

“Over half of these jobs are going to require less than a bachelor’s degree and more than a high school diploma,” said Kate Kinder, executive director of the National Council for Workforce Education. “That’s prime community college space.”

The prospects draw in students like Tannar Pouilliard, who remembers a wind farm quickly popping up near his childhood home. He had thought he would become an automotive technician, but learning about opportunities in wind led him to enroll in Danville’s wind energy technician courses.

“Turning wrenches and all that stuff, it’s always kind of what I’ve wanted to do. It’s just a broader opportunity,” he said. “It really opens the door for people out here for jobs.”

At the same time, the bigger picture for community colleges is that they have been losing students , not unlike the rest of higher education. Currently, more people are entering the workforce straight out of high school, and some community colleges haven’t recovered from the dip in enrollment that happened during the pandemic. It’s why some schools say investing in these programs is a balancing act between staying relevant and risking a bet on too-nascent technology.

“We feel the pressure,” said Monica Brummer, director of the Pacific Northwest Center of Excellence for Clean Energy at Centralia College in Washington. “If we create curriculum today for, say, a hydrogen technician, it may not be the curriculum we need in two or three years, because the technology is changing so fast ... I say let’s weave the technology in existing classes.”

Some schools hope to adapt without shelling out for expensive new tools and specialized instructors, who can be hard to come by. Minnesota’s Inver Hills Community College launched a climate change certificate in 2022, pulling from existing areas of study at the school and administrators are considering expanding that. Similarly, Cape Cod Community College recently shifted from specialized workforce training to a broader sustainable energy certificate that students across areas of study can pursue.

Other community colleges focus on helping students like Sarah Solis transfer to a four-year degree related to climate change.

The 1,000-acre Inglewood Oil Field, near West Los Angeles College, where she first enrolled, was what pushed Solis to pursue environmental studies. She later switched to the school’s climate change degree, which was new at the time. Its climate offerings have grown since then; it now hosts the California Center for Climate Change Education.

Solis transferred to the University of California, Davis, earning a degree in environmental science and management. But she credits her success today teaching urban farms how to sustainably adapt for a warming future — like adding cover crops or using compost — to her community college experience.

Many other students do, too.

″It was completely life changing,” Solis said. “I would not be an environmental scientist right now if I hadn’t gone to West.”
