  • Cleary written; we know what the applicant wants
  • Experience is stated

Work experience for an engineer

Your most relevant experience should be listed first. We recommend listing two to four jobs that best show your qualifications for the position to which you’re applying. You don’t need to list more than four jobs, nor do you need to list every job you’ve ever worked. The employers who review have limited time, and they want to quickly see what you have to offer.

It’s easy to sink or swim regarding job description bullet points. Check your resume for the following:

  • Punctuation is optional. Either include punctuation  everywhere  or completely omit it.

Not every bullet point is created (or, rather, written) equally. Here are some poor bullet points:

  • Designed the EmptyNest app
  • Fixed bugs and looked at reviews for future app updates
  • Updated the app coding once a month

These bullet points are weak because they don’t provide any information. What is the EmptyNest app? Who’s it for? What functions does the app perform? What kind of bugs did he fix? Why were user reviews important? What kind of coding updates did he make?

While you can’t include every single detail about your work, asking these kinds of questions will get you headed in the right direction. Here are the same bullet points, written strongly:

  • Designed an app called “EmptyNest” to help parents transition to children moving out of the home
  • Updated app to omit long loading periods for chat features to encourage 32% higher user engagement in the “Chat” feature
  • Analyzed user feedback to implement monthly changes to the app, which increased users by 82% over a six-month period 

These bullet points work because they provide details that help recruiters understand the project, demonstrate accomplishment and success, and prove ability through numbers. Metrics are vitally important, so let’s dive into that next.

Quantify your impact as an engineer

For engineers, quantifying your impact is a crucial part of showing your success. The numbers tell the  whole story . While this is daunting, it works in your favor if you successfully implement quantities and qualifications. Try to include metrics in about 60 percent of your bullet points.

Editor’s Note: As Commencement approaches, we are featuring some of our Neag School Class of 2024 graduating students over the coming days.

Major: BS, Special Education Hometown: South Windsor, Connecticut

Why did you choose UConn?

I transferred to UConn as a sophomore because I needed to pursue what would make me truly happy. I knew that UConn was a place where I could grow as a student and a person while attending a top-tier university and learning from people at the forefront of research in my field.

What’s your major or field of study, and what drew you to it?

Special education! I have always loved working with kids, but I didn’t believe I would ever be a teacher. After transferring to UConn, I pursued education and found special education through the Neag School. I love special education because I build close relationships with my students and advocate for their needs. Applying to the Neag School was the best decision I ever made for myself, and I couldn’t be more thankful for my cohort!

Did you have a favorite professor or class?

I enjoyed EPSY 3115 with Dr. Jen Freeman. This was my first special education course in the Neag School and the first class with my entire cohort! Dr. Freeman is an incredible educator and taught so much content with ease. All the projects for our class provided great hands-on practice for important facets of being a special educator, like creating an individualized education program!

What activities were you involved in as a student?

What’s one thing that surprised you about UConn?

In a very big school, you can find your community; there are many opportunities here, so you can tailor your college experience to get exactly what you want out of it.

Being in the Neag School has pushed me out of my comfort zone. …  I have grown a lot in my confidence and, because of what I have done and experienced during my time in college, I will be successful both in my field and in my ability to respond to change. — Molly Cole '24

What are your plans after graduation/receiving your degree?

Next year, I will be back at UConn to receive my master’s degree! After that, I plan to be a special education teacher at the elementary level! I have enjoyed being at an intermediate elementary school for my student teaching experience, so I would love to be in that grade bracket again! I have a couple of different parts of the U.S. I am interested in living and teaching in at the beginning of my career, but I haven’t decided yet.

How has UConn prepared you for the next chapter in life?

Being in the Neag School has pushed me out of my comfort zone and given me experiences I never thought I would be capable of. I have grown a lot in my confidence and, because of what I have done and experienced during my time in college, I will be successful both in my field and in my ability to respond to change.

Any advice for incoming students?

Trust yourself and know you don’t have to have everything figured out right now! You can change your mind about what you want; your college experience/life/goals don’t have to look the same as everyone else’s to be just as valid and fulfilling.

What’s one thing everyone should do during their time at UConn?

Participate in HuskyTHON and go to games at Gampel!

What will always make you think of UConn?

Anytime I hear the word husky, I think of UConn (and Jonathan)!

How would you design a game based on a painting by American artist Jackson Pollock, known for his wild splatters and drip technique? For mechanical engineering first-year student Jason Ahn and his Mechanical Engineering Freshman Design Exhibition teammates, the answer was right in front of them.

“It’s pretty similar to his style,” Ahn said of the team’s game that involved throwing balls through colored sections of a Pollock painting before the timer ran out. “He just kind of throws paint at a canvas.”

While painters like Leonardo da Vinci and Pablo Picasso were represented by their better-known works, some teams took a more obscure tack, as in the case of Edward Hopper’s 1940 painting “Gas” and Grant Wood’s 1936 painting “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere.” In the latter game, the player guides Revere astride his horse on a circular track, dodging obstacles on the way to gather the colonial militia.

“We didn’t go for the classic one, ‘American Gothic’,” said Wood team member Erin Ventrudo. “We thought this one was more fun.”

Some teams opted for a more conceptual approach, like the Rembrandt team, who focused on the artist’s famed use of light and shadow. In their game , the player aims a beam at pop-up characters from “The Night Watch”—under cover of a hooded darkroom.

“Across all of his paintings he used very high contrast with a lot of dark colors and a little bit of light colors, and in quite unusual places,” said team member Linda Boieriu. “So we wanted to incorporate that into the game.”

How to write an MBA resume and make sure it stands out in the stack

Applying to business school, or an MBA program, can be nerve-racking. You’ll need to lasso together transcripts and test scores, fill out an application, and likely ace an interview—but perhaps the most critical piece of it all is an MBA resume. This important document will list out many of the same elements as a traditional resume, such as your educational background and work experience. 

But an MBA resume also has a different primary function than the typical resume you might submit to try and land a job: It’s designed to land you a spot in an MBA program. If writing an MBA resume feels intimidating, knowing what to put on it, and some other framing tactics, may help calm your nerves.

As noted, an MBA resume should feel familiar to many prospective business school students. 

“An MBA resume is very similar to a job resume,” says Kaneisha Grayson, the founder and CEO of The Art of Applying , an MBA admissions consultancy. She adds that both types of resumes will, or should, comprise a single page, incorporate clear, professional formatting, and lay out an applicant’s educational and career accomplishments. 

“I’d say one difference between the two is that I advise our clients to put their education at the top—whereas with a job resume, you’d see education at the bottom,” Grayson says. She recommends this variation because an MBA resume’s specific aim of landing an applicant at an educational institution. 

So, in that sense, there may not be a whole lot of differences between an MBA resume and a job resume, but there will be some additional focus on specific aspects of your background, all in an effort to win over an MBA program’s selection or admissions committee. 

How to write an MBA resume

Again, writing an MBA resume shouldn’t differ a whole lot from writing a traditional resume, but you’ll want to try and keep your end goal in mind, which is landing a spot in an MBA program. As you write your MBA resume, keeping that goal in mind should prove helpful, because it can help you parse out the information you’ll want to include, and the things you won’t.

“An MBA resume is very specialized toward the application cycle,” says Ellin Lolis, President and Founder of Ellin Lolis MBA Consulting . So, again, keep the end goal in mind. “Your education section is going to be important,” Lolis says, “but we mostly want to see your career focus.”

As for the nuts and bolts of writing an MBA resume? Keep it simple by deciding what to rope in, what to leave out, and how to structure it all so that it’s easy to read. 

What to include in your MBA resume

The main elements that your MBA resume should include are an education section, a job experience or professional experience section, and a portion that details a bit more about you, personally, such as your hobbies and interests. 

You can leave out photographs, information related to your high school, and even most of your contact information—that’ll be included on your program application, the experts say. 

Again, do your best to keep what you include to one page. The only time you could probably get a pass for using more than one page is if you have extensive professional experience, and are applying to an executive MBA program. A good rule of thumb? “When you have more than seven years of full-time, post-college work experience,” says Grayson. 

How to structure an MBA resume

As for structuring an MBA resume, do your best to contain most elements to the aforementioned sections: Education, professional background and experience, and a section dedicated to your personal hobbies, interests, skills and certifications, and community service work.

List the schools you attended and the degrees you earned, perhaps with any relevant coursework and GPAs in the education section. Your professional section may differ depending on your specific experiences and industries you’ve worked in, but try to frame it as a sort of professional “story,” which can showcase how an MBA can help you take the next step.

“Generally speaking, the MBA is not a purely academic degree, as a majority of people are going to earn one to get a better job,” says Lolis. “They’re doing it to boost their career—and at that point, the most relevant thing is your recent job and your professional track record,” she says.

Get into the weeds, too, about your accomplishments. “Don’t just reiterate your job responsibilities,” says Grayson. “Communicate the results of your efforts. Quantifying the results is much more significant and meaningful—describe the impact,” she says.

Hobbies, interests, and more

As for the more personal portion? “One of the main things that’s different from a job resume is that they want you to share some of your hobbies and interests,” Lolis says. “Be very specific,” adds Grayson, “because 90% of people will list ‘travel’ as a hobby. “But that’s not interesting—maybe something like ‘slow traveling to find the best street food.’ That’s interesting.” This, she says, can help spark a conversation, or help your resume stand out from the pile.

In addition to specific hobbies or interests, you might include, add volunteer or community work as well, and perhaps relevant technical or language skills. Again, this may help tip the scales in your favor by showing you have specific know-how related to a given industry or task. Any applicable awards you’ve earned may be good to include, too, as they showcase that you’re capable of excelling in a given area.

Should you customize your resume for each business school?

Experts generally don’t recommend changing up your MBA resume when applying to different schools. Instead, look for specific instructions relayed by the school, if there are any, and make any needed changes accordingly. So, unless you have a really compelling reason, you can probably use the same resume for a number of applications.

Also, don’t go overboard in terms of design to make your resume stand out. “Just stick to traditional formatting,” says Lolis, since that’s what most admissions teams are used to seeing, and are generally looking for. Let the contents of the resume speak for you—not the design.

Where to go if you need help  

For many prospective MBA students, piecing together a resume shouldn’t be terribly difficult, given that it’s mostly the same process as writing a traditional resume. However, if you need help, you can reach out to consultants, or even check out some of the resources schools make available to help you along the process. 

  • Consultants : There are many MBA consultancies out there, including the firms that Lolis and Grayson founded. They can help create, review, and critique an MBA resume and get it into shape. 
  • Examples and templates : Some schools even make templates available , and example resumes to help students create their own. 

The takeaway  

In all, you should write an MBA resume in the same way you’d write a traditional resume, with some slight variations. The resume should focus on your professional background and previous education, while also detailing some of your personal interests, too. Stick to classic resume formatting as well, and keep it to one page, if possible.

It’s also important, experts say, to use some basic formatting and style—use 11 or 12-point font, a normal font style (Arial, Times New Roman, etc.), and overall, keep it professional. And remember: don’t go overboard trying to score style points with the resume’s design or other elements.

AUSome Science in 60 Seconds, a research-based competition in its second year presented by the  Council of Engineering Graduate Students  (CEGS), tasked students to create videos and explain their respective projects in a minute or less. Winners were announced during an awards ceremony on Thursday, April 25.

Since registration opened in January, students recorded video presentations using animation, simulation, diagrams, pictures, or demonstrations explaining overviews of their respective studies — but at a level where general audiences can follow. Judging was based on engagement, illumination, creativity and understanding of the subject matter.

Lucila Carias, a second-year graduate student in  polymer and fiber engineering in the Department of Chemical Engineering , and Ayden Kemp, a senior double-majoring in aerospace engineering and biosystems engineering , earned highest marks among faculty judges — winning top honors in graduate student and undergraduate student categories.

Carias, a member of the polymer and fiber research laboratory and recipient of the 2024 100+ Women Strong Outstanding Graduate Award (chemical engineering), noted that an estimated 14% of the state of Alabama’s population is house insecure. Her solution: sustainable 3D-printed housing.

“We aim to engineer bio-resins that target the advanced manufacturing industry of the future,” said Carias, a member of the college’s Center for Polymers and Advanced Composites . “We envision alleviating these challenges by using waste material for low-cost, environmental benefits to produce sustainable resins for 3D printed houses. Furthermore, another problem for which we found a solution is to decrease the number of accidents in the current process of building homes; that is also one of the main goals of this project. We are going to take that out of the equation and use machines so that we can print houses.”

Carias added that the research is a collaboration between Auburn University and the University of Idaho.

Kemp, who will graduate in May and plans to follow that by pursuing a graduate degree in biosystems engineering, developed a plan to not only end our dependence on petroleum for aviation and replace them with sustainable fuels made from converted waste and/or renewable sources.

How? By pyrolysis.

“Pyrolysis is heating the material at high temperatures, but under an inert atmosphere,” he said. “There's no oxygen. The material is not burning. The energy that's being supplied by the heat splits the molecules that make each of those compounds. Biomass and polystyrene both have a lot of cyclic aromatic benzene ring structures that when heated, will separate from the other ones, and then that can be used as an additive to make sustainable aviation fuels.”

Kemp, who is also working toward a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, was drawn to biofuels production research as a sophomore.

“I took that knowledge and added my own twist,” said Kemp, who credited Sushil Adhikari, professor in biosystems engineering, and Hossein Jahromi, assistant professor in biosystems engineering. “Most of the research in our lab is with pine pyrolysis, which is used for biodiesel fuel. I added in a plastic component so I could make more of the aerospace fuels.”

  • CEGS Most Creative Video: Shireen Singh, graduate student in chemical engineering.
  • Undergraduate finalists: Sam Yount, mechanical engineering , and Ethan Wavra, chemical engineering. Wavra also won the People’s Choice Award.
  • Graduate finalists: Tori Phillips, chemical engineering, and Jacob Faulkner, chemical engineering.

“Experiential learning opportunities such as AUSome Science in 60 Seconds provides student researchers with the opportunity to sharpen their skills for future endeavors,” said Maria Auad, associate dean for graduate studies and faculty development. “With today’s available technology, scientists can share their research – in a nutshell – to viewers on-demand. Projects like this allow students to polish their presentation and technology skills before they enter the workforce.

“I’m thrilled with not only the research our students undertake, but also the scope and diversity of projects from departments throughout the college.”

Matthew Garnett, CEGS president and PhD candidate in chemical engineering, said the purpose of the competition was to give graduate and undergraduate students a platform to be creative and showcase their research to a general audience.

“These videos will be used as recruitment tools to help attract prospective students to Auburn and show off the cool work being done on our campus,” he said. “I was very impressed with the content and quality of the videos. The judging panel had a hard time determining our overall winners, as many of the videos were exceptional. We look forward to hosting this competition in the future.”

Whether he was attending career expos, conferences, or gaining real-world experience as an intern, Muritala Issa '24 M.S. has been building his skills and his network throughout his time as a Charger, fueling his passion to make a meaningful impact on the world through his career.

As a child, Muritala Issa '24 M.S. wandered through the streets in his home country of Nigeria, eyes wide with wonder. He was captivated by what he describes as the "magic of transforming a village into a modern town." He marveled at the construction sites that shaped the village's landscape at the time, transforming its future.

Issa describes civil engineering as more than his career path – it is his calling. The recipient of a National Merit Scholarship from the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, he pursued his passion for civil engineering as an undergraduate student at the University of Ilorin in Nigeria.

Applying what he'd learned in and out of the classroom, Issa went on to serve as a project structural engineer at FAP Consulting, a renowned engineering company. His work fueled his passion, enabling him to collaborate with stakeholders and to craft innovative designs. He was involved with the development of a variety of important projects, including restaurants and office buildings. Whether he was leading a project or mentoring interns, he felt a sense of purpose.

Issa brought his passion to the United States and to the University of New Haven. He will accept his master's degree in civil engineering as part of Commencement , a three-day celebration on campus.

"Each day felt like a step toward unlocking my full potential in the field," he said. "It wasn't just about getting a degree. It was about being in an environment meant to shape future industry leaders. As I continue along this path, driven by choice, love, and passion, I am committed to making a meaningful impact on the world around me, one project at a time."

Issa's coursework enabled him to explore a variety of topics that he found to be both practical and stimulating, from structural engineering to sustainability. With the support of his faculty mentors, he also earned several certifications, including construction manager-in-training and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green associate.

One of the most exciting academic opportunities Issa has enjoyed as a Charger was the chance to attend the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants International Convention and Trade Show in Phoenix, Arizona. The convention opened doors for Issa, enabling him to expand his knowledge and his network.

"I delved into various aspects of building enclosures, from waterproofing to exterior walls and roofs, gaining insights that are crucial for ensuring the durability, sustainability, and performance of buildings," he recalls. "The chance to interact with students and industry experts from across the U.S. and Canada further enriched my experience, fostering invaluable connections and sparking new ideas."

Issa also gained valuable experience through his internship with Distinct Engineering, Inc. , a position he found through a career fair hosted by the University's Career Development Center . As a field inspector for the New Jersey-based firm, he worked on projects for clients such as Metro-North , collaborating with construction managers and contractors. Issa says it was an immersive learning experience that enabled him to build the skills he will need to power his career.

"My internship experience was invaluable, providing hands-on training in structural investigation, construction special inspection, project management, quality assurance, and stakeholder coordination," he explains. "It solidified my passion for civil engineering and equipped me with the practical skills needed for success in the industry."

Besides building his skills, Issa also built a network of friends and mentors at the University. He found a community and made many wonderful memories. From the beginning of his time as a Charger at the University's graduate student orientation , he felt at home on campus. He enjoyed connecting with other international students and found comfort in their shared experiences.

"The University's inclusive environment deserves praise," he said. "As a Muslim student hailing from Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, I had faculty who accommodated our religious practices during prayer times and the school provided dedicated spiritual spaces for prayers. During Ramadan, lecturers allowed time for breaking fast, and the Muslim Student Association provided food. These accommodations fostered a sense of belonging and made my educational journey fulfilling."

Issa immersed himself in the Charger community. He has had fun with old and new friends at events such as the University's International Festival, soccer tournaments, and the annual Taste of Africa event. He also connected with his fellow Chargers through his involvement in the University's Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) chapter and the African Graduate Students Association . He considers the SEI Student Conference he helped host earlier this year to be among his proudest and most memorable achievements as a Charger.

Whether he was connecting with his classmates, his faculty mentor Byungik Chang, Ph.D. , or other Chargers at events on campus, Issa felt like he was a part of a supportive community. He is particularly grateful for the support he received from University's vice president of student affairs and dean of students.

"Meeting Dr. Ophelie Rowe-Allen stands out as a highlight among my memories," he reflected. "Her genuine warmth and approachability during the orientation left a lasting impression on me. Whenever our paths cross on campus, she never fails to extend a friendly inquiry about my well-being, reinforcing the sense of community that defines the University of New Haven."

As he completes his last semester as a graduate student, Issa is looking forward to making a difference through his work. He's excited to make a positive impact on people's lives while also promoting sustainable development. He's driven by his belief in a future in which communities can flourish while offering everyone access to meaningful opportunities.

"My time at the University of New Haven wasn't just about getting a degree – it was transformative," he said. "I now have the skills, knowledge, and network to make a meaningful impact in civil engineering. I aim to improve the way we manage our built environment, particularly in urban areas, to ensure sustainable growth and development, especially in developing countries."

Columbia University "making important progress" in talks with pro-Palestinian protesters

NEW YORK -- Columbia University continues to hold talks with pro-Palestinian protesters after extending the deadline to dismantle their encampment on the school's main lawn in Manhattan.

University President Dr. Minouche Shafik issued a statement Tuesday saying she and other school leaders were speaking with students and working to reach an agreement. A university spokesperson confirmed overnight the conversations would continue, if necessary, through Thursday.

If the dialogue is unsuccessful, the school will consider alternative options for clearing out the lawn and restoring calm on campus . Due to security concerns, all classes on the school's Morningside campus are offering a hybrid option for the rest of the semester.

Pro-Palestinian students said the school has promised not to bring in the NYPD or the National Guard. Gov. Kathy Hochul was asked about that earlier Wednesday.

"I wanted to have a substantive conversation about public safety with the president, with campus security, with the NYPD, and at the time, they just made the decision to go remote to dial down pressure for the students," Hochul said.

But with finals and commencement closing in, the pressure is on. Many in the senior class, who graduated high school in spring 2020, are hoping their graduation remains in-person.

"I didn't get a high school graduation. It'd stink if I didn't get a college graduation either," Columbia senior Charles Beck said.

"My message to president is you are not going to solve a 100-year-old conflict in the Middle East," Columbia graduate student Omer Lbui said.

"Listen to our demands. We are advocating for an end to massacre, a future where people have full equal human rights, a hope to see a future that involves all collective liberation," student Basil Rodriguez said.

Chopper 2 flew over the school early Wednesday morning , and dozens of tents remained in place. Over the course of the eight-day protest , demonstrators have continued to demand Columbia divest from Israel.

"They have inspired a lot of other people to take more action or perhaps change actions they've been taking to draw more attention to the situation in Palestine, Gaza," non-student protester Carla Reyes said.

"Divest, disclose and amnesty for all," student Khymani James said. "This encampment, a peaceful student led demonstration is part of the larger movement for Palestinian liberation."

Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams applauded the security efforts on campus Tuesday, but said students who are peacefully protesting are not the problem.

"We can't have outside agitators come in and be disruptive to our city," Adams said in a briefing.

"I understand how important this is. Young people, in particular, are energized in their beliefs. But we have to have a respectful discourse," said Hochul. "This has gone too far."

Early Wednesday morning, NYPD officers in riot gear cleared out a group of about 100 protesters just outside campus. They were chanting, waving flags and holding signs in solidarity with students.

Columbia extends deadline for demonstrators

In her latest message to students and staff, Shafik wrote it is time to dismantle the pro-Palestinian encampment that popped up a week ago on the university's West Lawn. Protesters took over the lawn in tents following Shafik's controversial testimony before Congress .

"The encampment raises serious safety concerns, disrupts campus life, and has created a tense and at times hostile environment for many members of our community," she wrote. "It is essential that we move forward with a plan to dismantle it."

Shafik said student organizers have been meeting with a small group of faculty, administrators and university senators to "discuss the basis for dismantling the encampment, dispersing, and following university policies going forward." They were initially given until midnight Wednesday to come to an accord, but the deadline was later pushed back. 

A university spokesperson confirmed early Wednesday the school was "making important progress" and "in light of this constructive dialogue, the university will continue conversations for the next 48 hours."

The spokesperson said students "have committed to dismantling and removing a significant number of tents" and said they would "ensure that those not affiliated with Columbia will leave. Only Columbia University students will be participating in the protest."

"Student protesters have taken steps to make the encampment welcome to all and have prohibited discriminatory or harassing language," the spokesperson added.

Despite the ongoing talks, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and other Republican congressmembers met with Jewish students on campus on Wednesday and  called on Shafik to resign . Their message was met with jeers from students.

"I think the speaker should've stayed back in Washington," Columbia student Irwin Luna said.

"We've faced so much blatant discrimination, intimidation, harassment these past few days, and to have the Speaker of the Congress come and tell us he stands with us, that was powerful," Columbia student Ben Gelman said.

133 Jewish students write letter to Shafik: "We fear for our lives"

Pro-Israel and Jewish students say they have serious safety concerns. CBS New York has obtained a letter sent by 133 Israeli students at Columbia to the school's president and administrators outlining those concerns. They chose 133 because that is the number of hostages still believed to be held by Hamas in Gaza.

  The top of the letter points out threatening chants they say they've been subjected to. It asks the administration to "take immediate action to ensure our safety before it is too late. We fear for our lives."

"We feel unsafe going on campus right now," student Guy Sela said. "I've been literally shot in my life, served as a company commander [in paratroopers] for years, but going on a campus in the United States of America feels more dangerous."

"People were banging on my doors in the middle of the night because I came out publicly and was speaking as a proud Jew who supports the state of Israel," Columbia senior Noa Fay said.

Earlier this week, a group of pro-Israel and Jewish students put up posters of the 133 hostages in Gaza outside the encampment.

"Nothing's more important than bringing those 133 hostage back. We're putting our life at risk. We're putting our academic projectory at risk because that's what we're believing," Sela said.

As early as Wednesday, Columbia's senate, which is comprised of students and faculty, could vote on a resolution to censure Shafik, in part over the arrests of student-protesters last week.
