What is a PGA Tour Special Temporary member? Explaining Akshay Bhatia’s status

Akshay Bhatia has two top 5s this season, but he's still not a PGA Tour member.

Getty Images

If you hadn’t heard about Akshay Bhatia before last weekend, get ready to see a whole lot more of him.

The 21-year-old pro entered the final round of the Mexico Open at Vidanta tied for second with Jon Rahm , and although he finished solo fourth in Puerto Vallarta, that finish is key for Bhatia’s future.

Why? Because he’s still not a fully exempt member on the PGA Tour, so every point and dollar earned counts. After his runner-up finish at the Puerto Rico Open in March, Bhatia earned what’s known as Special Temporary Membership on the PGA Tour.

Not sure what that is? Well you’ve come to the right place. Here are some answers to questions you might have about the unique form of PGA Tour status.

What is a Special Temporary membership?

In simple terms, a Special Temporary member has the ability to accept as many sponsors exemptions to PGA Tour events as he’d like for the rest of the season.

Wait, there’s a limit to how many sponsors’ exemptions a player can earn?

Yes, but only for non-PGA Tour members. Tour members have unlimited sponsors exemptions. They might look to get one when they’re too far down on the priority list to get into a big event (like Sahith Theegala last year in Phoenix). Non-members may only play on seven sponsors’ exemptions each season.

So Bhatia is a non-PGA Tour member still?

Well, sort of. He is still technically a member of the Korn Ferry Tour. He won the Korn Ferry Tour season-opener in 2022 but didn’t play well the rest of the year and finished 30th on the regular season points list. He then didn’t make the cut at any of the three Korn Ferry Tour Finals events, keeping him from a PGA Tour card.

How does one become a Special Temporary Member?

The seven sponsors’ exemptions are basically an audition to earn at least the equivalent number of non-member FedEx Cup points to the 150th-place finisher in the FedEx Cup last year. This year the number was 175.228, which Bhatia eclipsed thanks to 165 points from the Puerto Rico Open.

What are non-member FedEx Cup points?

The FedEx Cup points a player would have earned if they were a PGA Tour member. It’s not the same as when an amateur finishes ahead of someone, but their money goes to the next player on the leaderboard. Bhatia’s points get allocated, just differently.

Why Will Zalatoris, ranked 29th in the world, hasn’t qualified for the FedEx Cup Playoffs

So can he qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs?

Unfortunately, no. Bhatia is not eligible for the FedEx Cup Playoffs because he is not a PGA Tour member.

Then what’s the idea behind becoming a Special Temporary member?

If by the end of the season — which will include the fall portion of the schedule, after the Playoffs — a special temporary member has the same or more non-member FedEx Cup points than No. 125 in the standings, he will earn his PGA Tour card for the following season. Based on last season, the No. 125 finisher (with LIV golfers included) had 385 points. Bhatia is up to 396.3 after last week, but this year’s standings will include more events.

Is there any way for him to become a PGA Tour member *this season*?

Win a PGA Tour event. This is the way.

If he does that, his non-member points will automatically convert to regular points and he’d be included in the FedEx Cup standings and able to play in the Playoffs.

Are there any other Special Temporary members this year?

Yes, both Ryan Gerard and Nicolai Hojgaard earned the status after the Valero Texas Open.

Who has earned status recently as a Special Temporary member?

Most recently was Tom Kim. Kim became a Special Temporary member after the Open Championship, secured enough points to guarantee his membership for this season at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, then catapulted his way into the Playoffs by winning the Wyndham Championship.

You may also recall the odd predicament Will Zalatoris was in the season prior. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 Korn Ferry Tour seasons were combined and the 2020-21 PGA Tour season included six majors. Zalatoris — the Korn Ferry Tour points leader at the time — earned a top 10 at the U.S. Open at Winged Foot and then kept playing well, earning Special Temporary status by November for the mega-season.

He then went on to finish runner-up at the Masters and record eight top 10s in total that season, amassing nearly $3.5 million. But his season ended at the Wyndham Championship as he still was not eligible for the Playoffs, despite working his way up to No. 29 in the world. He easily earned full status for 2021-22.

PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership: How to get it, what it means

pga tour special temporary membership

For players who are looking to break onto the PGA Tour, either from college or when they turn pro or from another professional tour, a great intermediate step shy of earning a PGA Tour card is earning PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership.

The PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership is a carrot for players who have seen some success in their limited, non-member PGA Tour starts, encouraging them to continue to make more starts and try to complete earning PGA Tour membership.

Non-members are limited to 12 PGA Tour starts in a season, and they can accept seven sponsor exemptions into tournaments. However, when a player earns PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership, they are able to accept unlimited sponsor exemptions for the remainder of the season, meaning a hot name gets more opportunities to potentially play more often.

How to earn PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership

A player earns PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership by earning enough non-member FedEx Cup points to equal the player who finished 150th in FedEx Cup points in the prior season. The non-member can earn PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership at any time in the season, and the non-member must accept it in order to use it.

In prior years, players had to earn enough non-member PGA Tour money to equal 150th on the prior season's money list. However, with emphasis now solely on FedEx Cup points to determine membership through the PGA Tour's top 125 ranking, Special Temporary Membership is determined in the same fashion.

The ultimate goal is for a non-member to earn enough FedEx Cup points to finish in the top 125 in regular season points were they PGA Tour members. Then they earn membership. And, just like a non-member, if a player with PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership wins on the PGA Tour, they can immediately take up membership with a two-season exemption (or more if the win is in a World Golf Championships event or major championship).

Only PGA Tour members can qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Akshay Bhatia gets a Special Membership on PGA Tour and talks about his heart rate skyrocketing leading up to the moment

1471242559

Akshay Bhatia hits a drive during the third round of the Puerto Rico Open.

Carmen Mandato

It was one of those quiet moments near the 18th green that TV viewers and fans mostly miss but are life-changing for players. Akshay Bhatia closed the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open last week with a birdie and final-round score of 65 that placed him solo second behind winner Nico Echavarria. He then walked over to his caddie, who wanted to make sure Bhatia was grasping the gravity of what he'd just accomplished, beyond earning the $414,000 paycheck that was the largest of his career.

“He's like, ‘Do you realize what just happened?’" Bhatia recalled on Tuesday. "And I said, ‘No.’ He's, like, ‘You got your card.’"

MORE: LIV Golf's attempt at trademarks blocked by Miami nightclub

With the runner-up finish in his fourth PGA Tour start this season, Bhatia accumulated enough non-member points to reach Special Temporary Membership—which was made official Tuesday ahead of the Valspar Championship, for which he qualified, thanks for the top-10 result in Puerto Rico. Bhatia can now ask for and receive unlimited sponsor's exemptions for the season.

For Bhatia to earn full status for 2024, he must accumulate as many of more more non-member FedEx Cjup points as the No. 125 player in the final 2023-23 FedEx Cup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List, which will be totaled up at the end of the 2023 fall portion of the season. With a current count of 230 FedEx Cup points, the tour calculated that Bhatia would fall between Nos. 91 and 92 in the standings. In the tour's new format beginning in '24, the top 70 players after the '23 playoffs earn fulltime status.

All the perks of the accomplishment began to sink in for Bhatia off the 18th green in Puerto Rico.

“It was a crazy feeling,” Bhatia said. "Just the highs of that—it was definitely top on my list right now, even with winning on the Korn Ferry Tour. … It was pretty surreal, and hugging my girlfriend, Presleigh, on 18 … that's just like an amazing moment for us and everything we've kind of gone through these last couple years.”

Bhatia, who gained notoriety at the Honda Classic last month when he had to take his shirt off twice to hit shots out of the mud during a round, talked about what his excitement was like as he made his way up the 18th hole at Grand Reserve Country Club.

“I dealt with high heart rates on the golf course and the crowds started to get slowly and slowly bigger and I would have never imagined that in Puerto Rico for myself, having 80, 90, 100 people people around watching our group. … I checked my Whoop heart rate after the round, and on my third shot on 18, my heart rate got up to 156 beats per minute, which is pretty nuts.”

This week will be a “full-circle” time, Bhatia said. A Los Angeles native who is 21, he eschewed college and turned pro at 17. He made his first-ever PGA Tour start in the 2019 Valspar as a 17-year-old amateur, missing the cut, and his return path to the tour has been difficult. Bhatia played his most events, 11, on the PGA Tour in 2020-21 and missed seven cuts. His best finish was a T-9 in the Safeway Open.

On the Korn Ferry Tour last season, Bhatia won his opening start in the Bahamas by closing with a 65. That seemingly set him up for the year, though he wouldn’t post another top-10 finish in 23 other starts and missed 13 cuts.

Bhatia is off to a strong start this year on two tours. He has two top-seven finishes in four KFT starts, and he’s made the cut in all four of his PGA Tour appearances.

His work on the PGA Tour now will be trying to post top-10s in other events to get more starts while also asking sponsors for exemptions. As a temporary member, he’s not limited to how many he can receive.

“I had no idea what adversity meant back in 2019, and I fully understand it now,” Bhatia said. “I've dealt with so many ups and downs in this game as a professional—not being able to rent rental cars, not being able to check into hotels. So, dealing with a lot of that outside stuff that I never had to deal with was a big challenge.

“Just self-belief, learn a lot, play a lot of high-level golf, it makes a big difference. This is my 23rd PGA Tour event and I'm saying that at 21 years old. … I'm very fortunate for all the opportunities that I've had. There’s nothing much more to say other than just keep learning and keep grinding.”

Lee needed a solo-27th or better while Fox required a two-way tie for 59th in the second men’s Major Championship of the season, with both players meeting those targets at Oak Hill Country Club.

A closing birdie saw Australian Lee end the week in a tie for 18th at two over, while New Zealander Fox - playing after a recent bout of pneumonia -shot a matching 71 in the final round to sit a shot further back in a tie for 23rd.

Lee, a two-time DP World Tour winner, began the year with a runner-up finish at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship as he narrowly missed out on his second Rolex Series title.

He followed that up with a top 15 finish in Dubai, with his performances during the DP World Tour’s Middle East Swing earning him qualification for next month’s U.S. Open, by virtue of being the top player, who is otherwise not exempt, on the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex as of the May 22 cut-off.

In his third PGA TOUR start of the year, World Number 61 Lee finished in a tie for sixth at The PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass in March.

Fox, who will also be heading to the Los Angeles Country next month as a result of being in the world’s top 60 in the Official World Golf Ranking, is another to have been a consistent performer on the DP World Tour over recent years.

The 36-year-old won twice in 2022 and finished in a career-best second place on the season-long rankings as he won the Seve Ballesteros Award after being voted Player of the Year by his fellow peers.

He has so far registered four top 20s on the DP World Tour this season, with five top 30 finishes in Major and PGA TOUR starts to help him sit in 41st place in the world rankings.

Players in the special membership category will earn full status on the PGA Tour for the 2024 season if they earn as many, or more, non-member FedEx Cup points as the 125th placed player in the final 2022-23 FedEx Cup standings.

As part of an extended partnership between the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR announced last year, the leading ten players on the season-long Race to Dubai Rankings will earn PGA TOUR cards for the following season.

Bhatia receives PGA Tour special temporary membership

pga tour special temporary membership

The PGA Tour awarded Akshay Bhatia a special temporary membership for the rest of the 2022-23 season on Tuesday.

The distinction means that Bhatia, 21, is allowed to receive an unlimited number of sponsor exemptions for the remainder of the season while he attempts to earn full membership for the 2024 season.

According to the PGA Tour, to earn full status for next season Bhatia must earn at least as many "non-member FedEx Cup points" as the final eligible player to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

It's the same temporary membership that the tour gave South Korea's Joohyung "Tom" Kim last summer. Kim went on to win the Wyndham Championship and earn his tour card for the 2022-23 season.

Bhatia tied for second at the Puerto Rico Open, an alternate event opposite the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this month. In four starts on tour this season Bhatia has made all four cuts, also landing a T17 at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship last October.

Bhatia made a splash in September 2020 when he tied for ninth at the season-opening Safeway Open at just age 18.

The California native has primarily played the Korn Ferry Tour since then.

Akshay Bhatia Gave an Emotional Interview at Puerto Rico Open for the Best Reason Ever

  • Author: Gabrielle Herzig

Former junior sensation Akshay Bhatia has captivated the golf community since he turned pro at 17 years old and began chasing his goal of playing on the PGA Tour.

At the Puerto Rico Open—where Bhatia finished just two shots behind Colombia’s Nico Echavarria —he accomplished that very goal, and naturally, his reaction was priceless.

Bhatia, now 21, racked up enough FedEx Cup points in Puerto Rico to earn Special Temporary Membership on the PGA Tour. Big-name stars such as Will Zalatoris and Tom Kim also forged their path on the PGA Tour through the Special Temporary Membership status.

“I can’t believe I’m crying, oh my God,” the Korn Ferry Tour player said as he processed the career-changing news. “It means a lot. I’ve worked really hard. It’s been a crazy journey for sure. Last year was really disappointing. I got hurt and didn’t get my card through the Korn Ferry Tour. It’s crazy.”

Bhatia, who had one of the most decorated junior golf resumes in recent memory, couldn’t hold back an influx of emotion during his touching post-round interview.

“Didn’t even know I shot 7 under. Chipped in three times on the same hole this week. It’s just a great story, and I want to write a book about my life and my journey and it’s definitely going to be a really good chapter, for sure,” Bhatia said.

The North Carolina resident expressed that after Puerto Rico, he’s excited to get home to his family, where he can hopefully share a drink with his parents now that he’s “legally able to drink.”

“I know my dad is going to probably cry and I’ve only seen him do it one time,” Bhatia said. “It’s going to be a fun week off and I’m excited for Valspar. It’s where it all started for me, my first ever Tour event.”

Bhatia achieved the Special Temporary Membership milestone by gathering enough FedEx Cup points to match the player who finished 150th on the points list for the previous PGA Tour season.

As a Special Temporary member of the Tour, Bhatia will no longer be limited to just 12 PGA Tour starts per season, and he can accept unlimited sponsors exemptions, rather than the seven exemptions that non-members are allowed. As the Korn Ferry Tour begins a five-week long break from competition, Bhatia will be ready to make the most of the PGA Tour starts he’ll inevitably receive in the coming weeks.

What Are the Requirements for a PGA Tour Card? 6 Ways to Earn One

Here are 6 ways to earn a PGA Tour card

In a lot of ways, getting a PGA Tour card is like winning the lottery. The path is simple, but the odds are against you. If you beat those odds, however, the payout is handsome.

To play as a member on the PGA Tour, you must have a PGA Tour card. Players earn their card by accomplishing one of several requirements. Here’s a breakdown of just how to earn a PGA Tour card, and six ways to snag one.

1. PGA Tour Q-School

PGA Tour Q-School used to be a direct path to the PGA Tour. Then Q-School stopped giving players PGA Tour cards, giving them status on the Korn Ferry Tour instead, where they could play for spots on the PGA Tour over the course of an entire season. But now, just like in years past, players can earn a PGA Tour card through Q-School and head straight to the PGA Tour. However, only the top five finishers from the final stage of Q-School earn PGA Tour cards and get to head directly to the PGA Tour.

Korn Ferry Tour: Strategies to Qualify and Challenges to Expect

2. Korn Ferry Tour Points

The most direct path to the PGA Tour is through the Korn Ferry Tour. While gaining Korn Ferry Tour status is no breeze in itself, once there, players have multiple avenues to earn their PGA Tour card.

There are 30 PGA Tour cards up for grabs through the Korn Ferry Tour each year. The top 30 players from the Korn Ferry Tour's season-long standings after the KFT Championship earn cards.

Getting into the Korn Ferry Tour is a process in itself, which can be accomplished through Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying School , or via the Forme Tour , Mackenzie (Canadian) Tour, or the PGA Tour Latinoamerica.

3. Korn Ferry Tour Three-Win Promotion

Korn Ferry Tour players can jump directly to the PGA Tour through an exemption known as the Three-Win Promotion . This promotion is exactly what it sounds like, after three Korn Ferry Tour wins in one season, a player gains his PGA Tour card.

The three-win promotion has proven to be a tough route to the big tour, as only 12 players have accomplished the feat since 1997.

4. PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership

Players can bypass the Korn Ferry Tour and jump straight to the PGA Tour by gaining PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership, then parlaying that into a PGA Tour card.

The PGA Tour reserves a small number of spots each week for non-Tour members through sponsor exemptions and Monday qualifiers. Non-members who compete in PGA Tour events through these avenues and perform well enough can earn Special Temporary Membership by accumulating the amount of FedExCup points equal to the player who finished 150th on the FedExCup list the previous season.

Once a player has accepted Special Temporary Membership, they can accept unlimited sponsor exemptions into PGA Tour events and can earn their card by finishing in the top 125 of the FedExCup points list during the regular season.

Without Special Temporary Membership, non-members can only accept up to seven sponsor exemptions and compete in up to 12 PGA Tour events in a season.

Players on a Special Temporary Membership are not eligible for the FedExCup playoffs.

5. PGA Tour U Gets College Golfers to the PGA Tour

Through PGA Tour U , the PGA Tour has removed some hurdles for the top collegiate players who begin their transition into the professional ranks when their amateur careers end.

Top collegiate players in the final year of their college careers earn ranking points based on their performance in the NCAA Division I championship, PGA Tour events, major championships, and the Dubai Desert Classic. At the end of the season, five PGA Tour University first-team and second-team honorees are identified, along with 10 PGA Tour University third-team players.

The top player earns PGA TOUR membership for the rest of the season, plus the followig season. The top five players earn Korm Ferry Tour membership for the rest of the season, a spot in the Final Stage of Q-School, and the opportunity to accept unlimited sponsor exemptions into PGA Tour events throug the following season.

Nos. 6-10 earn conditional Korn Ferry Tour status for the current season, an exemption into the North American portion of the PGA TOUR Americas schedule, and an exemption into Second Stage of Q-School.

The 10 third-team honorees get exemptions to the North America Swing of the PGA TOUR Americas and exemptions into the Second Stage of Q-School.

6. Win a PGA Tour Event or Major Championship

The fastest way to earn a PGA Tour card is also the least likely. Anybody who wins a PGA Tour event gets an immediate two-year PGA Tour exemption. This means that any non-member who gets into the field at a PGA Tour event via a sponsor exemption or Monday qualifier, and goes on to win that event, gets their PGA Tour card.

While yes, this path is extremely rare, it's exactly what Nick Dunlap did in 2024. He entered a PGA Tour event, the American Express, as an amateur, and despite the astronomica odds, won the tournament. Shortly after, Dunlap took advantage of his two-plus year PGA Tour exemption by turning pro.

Major champions get even more luxury, securing a five-year exemption to both the PGA Tour and European Tour. Three of the four major championships each year reserve spots for amateur players , meaning that theoretically an amateur could win the Masters, U.S. Open or Open Championship and secure their PGA Tour card for the next five years.

Benefits of a Tour Card

By having a PGA Tour card, a golfer can play in PGA Tour events. Many players also receive sponsor endorsements and advertising contracts. The PGA Tour card provides the player the opportunity to win large purses in tournaments . Players who make the cut in routine PGA Tour events generally cash at least a five-figure check, with that amount increasing with higher-stature events and major championships.

In 1965, the first PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament (called Q-School) was held and John Schlee won the event. In 1968 and 1969 and from 1975 to 1981, there were two tournaments each year.

Until 2013, Q-School was used to grant membership to the PGA Tour. From 2013 to 2023, Q-School served as a gateway to the Korn Ferry Tour, with PGA Tour Cards handed out through the Korn Ferry Tour regular season and finals.

Misconceptions

Many people think that if a player holds a PGA Tour Card, he can play in any event on the PGA tour. However, new PGA tour players are eligible for tournaments but players commit to tournaments based on their priority ranking. Players with lower priority rankings can only play an event when it's not already full by the time they have a chance to commit.

Joohyung Kim Accepts PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership

The South Korean has accepted Special Temporary Membership for the remainder of the 2021-22 season

Joohyung Kim poses with Greg Norman and Cho Minn Thant

The PGA Tour has announced that Joohyung Kim has accepted Special Temporary Membership for the remainder of the 2021-22 season.

A native of South Korea, Kim is now eligible for unlimited sponsor exemptions for the remainder of the season as he attempts to earn his PGA Tour card for the 2022-23 season.

"I’ve worked really hard to get to this point, and now I have more work ahead of me to earn full PGA Tour status for 2023," said Kim, who received a sponsor exemption for this week’s 3M Open. "It has always been a dream of mine to play the PGA Tour and I am very grateful to 3M for giving me this opportunity to compete."

Currently No.40 in the Official World Golf Ranking, Kim has made six starts on the PGA Tour this season, highlighted by a third-place finish at the Genesis Scottish Open. He recorded additional top-25s at the AT&T Byron Nelson (T17) and U.S. Open (23) as well as making the cut at the 150th Open Championship.

The 20-year-old South Korean is regarded as one of the rising stars in the game and his receipt of PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership is likely to be seen as a swipe at the LIV Golf Series and Asian Tour from Commissioner Jay Monahan.

LIV Golf Investments, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund-backed company headed by Greg Norman, along with the Asian Tour, recently unveiled 'The International Series,' which features 10 tournaments across Asia and Europe. Kim has been a prominent feature in that Series and would have been considered a target for the LIV Golf Series but for the allure of the PGA Tour and Kim's desire to become a member.

Kim crossed the threshold for Special Temporary Membership with a tie for 47th at last week’s Open Championship, accumulating as many or more points through the non-member FedEx Cup points list this season as No.150 on the 2020-21 FedEx Cup standings (287).

To earn full status on the PGA Tour for the 2022-23 season, Kim must earn as many or more non-member FedEx Cup points as the final eligible player from the 2021-22 FedEx Cup standings to qualify for the 2022 FedEx Cup Playoffs. Kim currently has 296 points, and for reference, that would fall between Nos.131 and 132 in the current FedEx Cup standings.

Kim is the youngest player to join the Tour as a Special Temporary Member since Joaquin Niemann did so as a 19-year-old during the 2017-18 season.

Special Temporary Members are not eligible for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, however, Special Temporary Members or non-members who subsequently become regular PGA Tour members by winning an official event during the season will be counted on the FedEx Cup points list, along with any FedEx Cup points earned as a non-member (excluding those won at World Golf Championships events, the Barbasol Championship and the Barracuda Championship as a non-member) and thus be eligible for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Min Woo earns PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership

Min Woo earns PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership

Min woo lee would have been aiming higher than his eventual share of 18th at the pga championship on sunday, but the australian leaves oak hill with a nice bonus for his strong play by earning a category on the pga tour..

Lee entered the final day as the leading Australian, with a record-equalling final round comeback needed to win the Wanamaker trophy, and after birdie at the 1 st hole had things moving in the right direction.

Bogey at the 4 th was followed by more of the same at the 6 th and 12 th on a day where the sun finally shone on Oak Hill Country Club and Brooks Koepka would eventually walk away with a fifth major title.

Lee closed with a birdie at the 72 nd hole for a final round 71 to finish on two-over-par for the championship and in a share of 18 th , his second best finish at a major after a T14 on debut at Augusta National in 2022.

The 24-year-old’s result was enough to push him into a Special Temporary Membership of the PGA Tour (needing only a solo 27th or better), the West Australian’s outwardly stated goal of playing in America closer than ever before.

Special temporary members of the PGA Tour can receive unlimited sponsor invites for the season in which the category was earned, unlike the maximum of seven for non-members.

From those sponsor invites, and other tournaments he will receive starts in – such as majors and co-sanctioned events with the DP World Tour where he is a two-time winner – Lee will need to earn the same number of points, or more, as the 125 th ranked player at season’s end (including "Fall" events) to earn full status for 2024.

Special Temporary Membership does not allow players to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs, however, if Lee was to win an event on the PGA Tour he would become a member and able to play the lucrative end of season series.

Kiwi Ryan Fox also achieved the same feat with his share of 23 rd that eclipsed the two-way tie for 59 th or better that he needed.

Peter Kuest receives PGA Tour special temporary membership

After consecutive weeks appearing near the top of the leaderboard, Peter Kuest has been rewarded with special temporary membership to the PGA Tour after earning enough "non-member" FedEx Cup points to pass the threshold.

Kuest, 25, was a standout golfer at BYU but had nowhere to play when he turned pro in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. He received a sponsor's invite into the AT&T Byron Nelson earlier this year and finished tied for 14th.

Then he got into the field at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit as a Monday qualifier and went 64-70-65-68 to tie for fourth. At the John Deere Classic this past week, he tied for 17th, shooting in the 60s in his first three rounds.

The temporary membership gives Kuest unlimited sponsor's exemptions for the rest of the season as he strives to earn his PGA Tour card. To do that, he must finish the regular season with at least as many FedEx Cup points as the No. 125 player in the standings.

South Korean up-and-comer Tom Kim received the same special temporary membership from the PGA Tour last July, and Kim then won the Wyndham Championship on his way to securing full-time membership.

Kuest is the sixth player to earn special temporary membership this season, following Akshay Bhatia , Ryan Fox of New Zealand, Ryan Gerard , Nicolai Hojgaard of Denmark and Min Woo Lee of Australia.

Gerard & Højgaard join the PGA TOUR as Special Temporary Members

Golf in uae, golf in uae world.

Both players are eligible for unlimited sponsor exemptions for the remainder of the season

Rasmus Højgaard

The PGA TOUR announced today that Ryan Gerard and Nicolai Højgaard  have accepted Special Temporary Membership for the remainder of the 2022-23 PGA TOUR Season. Gerard, 23, and Højgaard, 22, are now eligible for unlimited sponsor exemptions for the remainder of the season as they attempt to earn PGA TOUR cards for the 2024 season.

Both Gerard and Hojgaard crossed the threshold for Special Temporary Membership at the Valero Texas Open and will make their first PGA TOUR start since at this week’s two-man team event, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Gerard is teaming with PGA TOUR rookie Ben Griffin , who was a teammate of his for one season (2017-18) at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, while Højgaard is paired with fellow Dane Thorbjorn Olesen, who is playing on a sponsor exemption and competed for Europe in the 2018 Ryder Cup.

Gerard made his season debut at The Honda Classic where he earned a spot via a 5-for-3 playoff at the Open Qualifier and went on to finish solo-fourth, becoming the first Open Qualifier to finish in the top five of a PGA TOUR event since Doc Redman at the 2019 Rocket Mortgage Classic (2nd). With the top-10 result, he got into the following week’s Puerto Rico Open and finished T11. Gerard entered 2023 with status on the Korn Ferry Tour after finishing No. 5 in the Fortinet Cup on PGA TOUR Canada last summer, where he won the 2022 Quebec Open.

Two-time winner on the DP World Tour

Højgaard made his first start of the season at the Corales Puntacana Championship and finished solo-second, one stroke behind Matt Wallace. The top-10 result got him into the Valero Texas Open, where he earned Special Temporary Membership with a tie for 28th. Hojgaard, a two-time winner on the DP World Tour, won the 2021 DS Automobiles Italian Open the week after his twin brother Rasmus won the Omega European Masters, making the Højgaard twins the first pair of brothers to win in back-to-back weeks on the DP World Tour.

To earn full status on the PGA TOUR for the 2024 season, Gerard and Højgaard must earn as many or more non-member FedExCup points as No. 125 in the final 2022-23 FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List, which will run through the FedExCup Fall. Højgaard currently has 190 points, and for reference, that would fall between Nos. 115 and 116 in the current standings, while Gerard’s total of 178 would be between Nos. 116 and 117.

Gerard and Højgaard are two of three players that have joined the TOUR as Special Temporary Members this season. Akshay Bhatia , who earned Special Temporary Membership after a runner-up at the Puerto Rico Open, made his first start as a Special Temporary Member at the Valspar Championship and most recently competed at the RBC Heritage.

Not eligible for the FedExCup Playoffs

Special Temporary Members are not eligible for the FedExCup Playoffs, however, Special Temporary Members or non-members who subsequently become regular PGA TOUR members by winning an official event during the season will be counted on the FedExCup points list, along with any FedExCup points earned as a non-member (excluding those won at World Golf Championships events, the Barbasol Championship and the Barracuda Championship as a non-member) and thus be eligible for the FedExCup Playoffs.

A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Gerard turned professional in 2022 and currently resides in Jupiter, Florida. Højgaard was born in Billund, Denmark, turned professional in 2019 and currently resides in Aarhus, Denmark.

Unveiling the Secrets of Special Temporary Membership in the PGA

Golf is a sport that captivates enthusiasts around the world, and for many, the ultimate dream is to play professionally on the PGA Tour. While securing a regular PGA Tour membership is the pinnacle of achievement, there is another pathway available to aspiring golfers: Special Temporary Membership. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the intricacies of Special Temporary Membership in the PGA (Professional Golfers' Association), exploring its definition, eligibility criteria, benefits, and limitations. Join us on this journey as we uncover the secrets behind this valuable opportunity for golfers seeking to make their mark on the professional circuit.

What is Special Temporary Membership?

Definition and eligibility.

Special Temporary Membership is a designation granted by the PGA Tour to non-member golfers who demonstrate exceptional talent and potential. It allows them to compete in select PGA Tour events alongside regular Tour members. This temporary status provides an opportunity for aspiring professionals to showcase their skills and gain valuable experience at the highest level of competition.

To be eligible for Special Temporary Membership, players must meet certain criteria established by the PGA Tour. These criteria typically include a combination of performance-based requirements, such as earnings from a specified number of events or securing a certain position on the official PGA Tour rankings.

Benefits and Privileges

Special Temporary Members enjoy a range of benefits and privileges that enhance their experience on the PGA Tour. These may include exemptions for certain events, access to practice facilities, and the opportunity to compete against the best players in the world. Additionally, Special Temporary Membership grants players increased exposure to sponsors, media, and the golfing community, helping them to establish their presence within the industry.

How to Obtain Special Temporary Membership

Application process.

The process of obtaining Special Temporary Membership begins with the submission of an application to the PGA Tour. The application typically requires detailed information about the player's competitive history, achievements, and other relevant background details. The PGA Tour carefully reviews each application to ensure that the applicant meets the eligibility criteria.

Requirements and Criteria

The eligibility requirements for Special Temporary Membership may vary from season to season, as determined by the PGA Tour. These requirements are designed to identify golfers who have demonstrated exceptional skill and potential but have not yet earned a regular PGA Tour membership.

Some common criteria for Special Temporary Membership may include achieving a certain level of earnings or securing a specific position on the FedEx Cup points list. These performance-based criteria serve as indicators of a player's competitive abilities and potential to succeed at the highest level.

Special Temporary Membership vs. Regular Membership

While Special Temporary Membership offers aspiring golfers a valuable opportunity to compete on the PGA Tour, it is important to understand the distinctions between this temporary status and a regular PGA Tour membership.

One key difference is the level of commitment and access provided to Special Temporary Members. Unlike regular members, who have full privileges and are eligible to compete in all PGA Tour events, Special Temporary Members have certain limitations. These limitations may include restrictions on the number of events they can enter and the types of exemptions they receive.

Furthermore, Special Temporary Membership does not guarantee automatic entry into PGA Tour events. Players must still adhere to tournament entry guidelines and, in some cases, participate in pre-tournament qualifying rounds. However, the status of Special Temporary Membership does provide players with greater opportunities for participation compared to non-members.

Tips for Making the Most of Special Temporary Membership

Obtaining Special Temporary Membership is a significant milestone in a golfer's journey towards professional success. To make the most of this opportunity, here are some valuable tips to consider:

  • Leveraging Opportunities: Take advantage of the chances to compete alongside established professionals. Embrace the competitive environment, learn from experienced players, and strive to elevate your game with each event.
  • Building Connections: Network with fellow golfers, sponsors, tournament organizers, and industry professionals. Forge meaningful relationships that can provide guidance, mentorship, and potential career opportunities.
  • Maintaining Consistency: Consistency is key to securing long-term success. Continue to perform at a high level, both during Special Temporary Membership and beyond. Consistent performance will strengthen your case for a regular PGA Tour membership.

Remember, Special Temporary Membership is a valuable stepping stone, and maximizing its potential requires dedication, hard work, and a relentless pursuit of improvement.

FAQs About PGA Special Temporary Membership

What are the eligibility criteria for Special Temporary Membership?

To be eligible for Special Temporary Membership in the PGA Tour, golfers must meet specific criteria established by the PGA Tour. These criteria typically include a combination of performance-based requirements, such as earnings from a specified number of events or securing a certain position on the official PGA Tour rankings. The eligibility requirements may vary from season to season.

Can Special Temporary Membership be renewed?

Special Temporary Membership is a temporary status and does not have a renewal process. However, players who have previously held Special Temporary Membership and continue to meet the eligibility criteria may reapply in subsequent seasons.

How does Special Temporary Membership benefit aspiring professional golfers?

Special Temporary Membership offers aspiring professional golfers the chance to compete alongside regular PGA Tour members in select events. It provides a valuable platform to showcase their skills, gain experience, and attract attention from sponsors, media, and the golfing community.

Final Thoughts on Special Temporary Membership in the PGA

The PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership offers aspiring golfers an extraordinary opportunity to compete at the highest level of professional golf. By understanding the criteria, benefits, and limitations associated with this temporary status, golfers can navigate their path towards a successful career in the sport. Aussies on Tour: Lee secures immediate future on PGA TOUR

pga tour special temporary membership

West Australian Min Woo Lee can play the PGA TOUR for the rest of the 2022/2023 season courtesy of his top-20 finish at the US PGA Championship in New York.

Tied for 10th at the start of the final round at Oak Hill Country Club, Lee birdied the first and 18th holes in a round of 1-over 71 and a tie for 18th.

He needed a finish of solo 27th or better to accrue the necessary FedEx Cup points that would grant him Special Temporary Membership of the PGA TOUR. The 24-year-old can now continue to collect more FedEx Cup points that will all but ensure his full membership for the 2023/2024 season.

A three-time winner on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, Kiwi Ryan Fox also secured Special Temporary Membership with his tie for 23rd, his second-best finish in a major.

Cam Davis was another to benefit from his strong showing at the PGA Championship.

A final round 5-under 65 and tie for fourth not only earned Davis an invitation to play the 2024 Masters but will likely secure his spot in the field for next month’s US Open at LA Country Club.

Even par for the tournament standing on the 14th tee, Davis produced one of the shots of the week to rocket up the leaderboard.

He hit his tee shot 319 yards inside eight feet at the short par 4, converting his eagle opportunity before adding what would prove to be a crucial birdie at 17 for a 3-under total.

“It was awesome. Any time you make an eagle in a major in front of a big crowd is a really awesome experience,” said Davis, who moved from 68th to 49th in the Official World Golf Ranking to also earn exemption into next month’s US OPen.

“Really nice to do that towards the end of the final round where every birdie or eagle you make at that point scoots you pretty high up the leaderboard.

“I was pretty pumped up, but at the same time you have to go to the next hole and calm yourself down and hit a finesse shot.

“It’s a pretty unique up-and-down of emotions.”

Davis and Cameron Smith both equalled the low score in a final round of a PGA Championship at Oak Hill – 5-under 65 – as Smith finished tied for ninth two months out from his Open Championship title defence.

There were top 10 from Aussies also in Japan and Florida.

Weekend rounds of 63-65 saw Dylan Perry finish tie for seventh at the Golf Partner Pro-Am Tournament on the Japan Golf Tour, Western Australian Kirsten Rudgeley tied for 10th at the Aramco Team Series Florida on the Ladies European Tour.

Monday qualifier Peter Kuest finishes top 10 at Valero, earns another start

Change Text Size

Peter Kuest is making a habit of this.

After Monday qualifying for the Valero Texas Open, Kuest finished T10 at TPC San Antonio to earn a spot in the Corales Puntacana Championship (a TOUR Additional Event that runs opposite the RBC Heritage, the week following the Masters).

Kuest began the Valero final round in a share of 26th place, but he vaulted up the board with a closing 4-under 68 that included three birdies in a four-hole stretch around the turn. He followed a bogey at the par-3 16th with slightly disappointing pars on the gettable par-4 17th and par-5 18th holes, making his top-10 spot very much in limbo as the final groups came in.

When Ludvig Åberg – playing in the penultimate grouping – didn’t make eagle at the final hole, Kuest’s top-10 spot was secure.

“It's pretty draining after a Monday grinding it out, especially playing two extra holes, but then you've just got to reset mentally and go out and put in the work and then go play,” Kuest said after Sunday’s final round. “(Finishing top 10) was definitely something I wanted to do, but I was not really thinking about it. I just knew if I went out and played good golf, I would have a good chance at that. Now we just see what happens.”

In narrow fashion, it happened.

Peter Kuest makes birdie on No. 11 at Valero

Kuest has struggled to make an impact on the Korn Ferry Tour this season, making just one cut in six starts. But his success at the Valero corresponds with his play on TOUR last season, where he finished T4 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic as a Monday qualifier and parlayed that result into Special Temporary Membership with a T17 at the following week’s John Deere Classic (he had also finished 14th at the AT&T Byron Nelson and T57 at the RBC Canadian Open earlier in the season). He ultimately failed to finish inside the top 125 in non-member FedExCup points, though, placing in the non-member 126-150 category that offered strong Korn Ferry Tour status but zero TOUR status for 2024.

The 25-year-old BYU alum now looks to change that. The Valero marked Kuest’s first TOUR start of 2024, and he’ll head to the Corales looking to build toward Special Temporary Membership once again. The Special Temporary Membership threshold for this season is 263 points (No. 150 on last year’s FedExCup Fall standings), and Kuest earned 67.5 non-member points with his four-way T10 at the Valero.
