The PhD in Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology is for students interested in the application of psychology in the workplace and other organizational settings. The curriculum provides students the opportunity to pursue coursework in coaching psychology, consultation psychology, industrial psychology and organizational psychology. What are the phd in psychology admission requirements.

Applicants must provide the following information for  admission  to Capella programs and specializations:

  • A master’s degree from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or from an internationally recognized institution
  •  Your official master’s transcripts, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale

The Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology Doctoral Program trains individuals to be both scientists and practitioners. We believe that a strong grounding in basic and applied research skills and the theoretical underpinnings of I/O psychology are essential for both academic and applied work. The goal of the I/O psychology program is to continue to enhance its national reputation as a center of scholarly excellence in I/O psychology by conducting high-quality basic and applied research. Consequently, faculty and student collaboration in ongoing research projects is strongly emphasized.

The program has a major emphasis on academic research-based training with the objective of placing students in academic careers. However, in addition to academic positions, our graduates are qualified for positions in research organizations, government agencies, corporations, and consulting firms. Concerning the placement of our graduates since 2000, approximately 40% are currently in academic positions and 60% are in applied and research positions.  Some academic placements include University of Illinois, University of Central Florida, Rice University, Northern Arizona University, DePaul University, Oklahoma State University, University of Chile, Kansas State University, Eastern Kentucky University, and University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Some research and applied placements include Pearson, Select International, United States Special Operations Command (U.S. Air Force), VA Boston Healthcare System, ACT, American Institutes for Research, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc., IPR Pharmaceuticals (AstraZeneca PLC), Google, and State Farm Insurance. Admission requirements.

  • A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
  • Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). A regionally or nationally accredited master’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA is required for admission in good standing.
  • Contact information  for 2 recommenders is required (approved recommenders are the student’s former college professors or supervisors).
  • Statement of Purpose  is required (1,000-1,500 words, double spaced).
  • Departmental approval is required.
  • Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. For information on alternative assessments or TOEFL waivers, please call Admissions or view the official International Admissions policy .

Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

  • Be in your final term and planning to start your doctoral degree after the last day of class for your master’s degree.
  • Complete a Master’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
  • Submit an official transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show that you are within 6 credit hours of completion for a 30-48 credit hour master’s degree or within 9 credit hours of completion for a 49+ credit hour master’s degree.
  • Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new doctoral degree.

Industrial-Organizational Psychology Graduate Program

Department of Psychological Sciences

Industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology is interested in people in the workplace and how work affects people’s lives more broadly. This knowledge of human behavior in organizations allows I-O psychologists to solve workplace problems and enhance workplace well-being, fairness and productivity. Applying psychological theories and principles, the industrial component of I-O psychology focuses on selecting and training workers, and the organizational component focuses on creating a conducive environment for workers. The field of I-O psychology is leading the way in understanding future of work and big data trends.

Ranked No. 7 in the world by U.S. News and World Report , Purdue University’s I-O psychology program is also one of the oldest, having conferred its first degree in 1939. Additionally, Purdue’s I-O psychology program has graduated more PhDs and produced more Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) fellows than any other.

Graduate students are admitted to work with a primary faculty member who will serve as their mentor. Heavily research-oriented, graduate training is based on a science-practice model, so students are trained as both researchers and applied scientists, equipped to work with organizations on human resources-related issues. Graduate students will also have opportunities to gain teaching experience in the program.

All graduate students are admitted with funding and will have guaranteed funding for five years, provided they are making strong progress toward their PhD. An admitted student will typically work as a graduate teaching assistant for 20 hours per week during the academic year and receive a nine-month stipend and tuition waiver. Students may also receive funding during summers if they obtain a teaching assistant position or if they are employed as a research assistant.

Students are strongly encouraged to participate in faculty research and eventually formulate and direct their own individual research projects. Admissions/Requirements

Many students enter the PhD program with a bachelor’s degree, although some enter with a master’s degree. We are particularly interested in students who have undergraduate or graduate research experience as well as those who have a master’s degree in I-O psychology or a similar field. This course provides the students with a comprehensive overview of the theoretical underpinnings of social psychology. The course explores the practical application of social psychology for solving problems in the real world, primarily through discussions on social problems that relate to relationships and diversity, organizational systems and social functioning (e.g., health, business, sexism, racism, criminal justice, media). The course also provides a comprehensive overview of major experiments in the field of applied social psychology, with the aim of encouraging students, within their own public sphere, to investigate and offer explanations to why certain behavior/actions and feelings occur in social contexts.

In this course, guided by the scholar-practitioner model of utilizing scholarly knowledge in the workplace, students will learn to apply current theories, concepts, and research from I/O Psychology for individual and organizational change. Students will be required to assess the changes needed, operationalize the desired outcomes, specify the metrics for determining success, and describe a detailed action plan for bringing about change and innovation, focusing on the impact at both the individual and the organizational level. Students will learn the influence of psychological foundations of individual behavior in organizations, how group dynamics and organizational culture influences individual behavior, and the impact of diverse cultures and multi-generations in their professional world.

This course will provide students with foundational knowledge of the core theories, concepts, methods, findings, and principles of cognitive psychology. Through readings and discussions, students in the course will review components of cognitive psychology in applied settings. Students will evaluate research and learn how cognitive psychology is used to carry out investigations into attention, memory, knowledge representation, perception and the differences between experts and novices. As in all courses in the Scholar-Practitioner Core Psychology Series, this course aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge to perform independent translational research in applied settings.

Today’s rapid development of communication through new media technologies is affecting every type of relationships from individuals, to groups, to society at a global level. In this course, students will develop a greater understanding of the psychological impact of media on individuals and society, and learn how to constructively apply that knowledge in solving problems and improving practices in their chosen profession.

Applied PsyD Research

The Research Method course is geared to providing foundational skills for scholar-practitioners that are key to understanding and mastering methodology. The focus of both this class and the program is to teach students to identify areas in which applied research is necessary, learn how to correctly formulate the research questions or issues, and to design the research appropriately. The material covered Research Design will provide a solid background, from which students can explore numerous aspects of methodology in greater detail. The class has been developed to suit students from a diverse array of backgrounds as well as be useful for those who will be or become active in a variety of fields spanning the private and public sectors. When students complete this class, they will have a firm grasp on research design and be prepared to undertake more advanced coursework in research methodology.

Survey Design is geared to exposing scholar-practitioners to a variety of areas that are key to understanding and mastering methodology. The focus of both this class and the program is to teach students to identify areas in which survey research is necessary, learn how to correctly formulate the survey questions or issues, and to design the survey appropriately. The material covered in Survey Design and Analysis will provide a solid background, from which students can explore numerous aspects of survey methodology in greater detail. Students will also be prepared to undertake more advanced coursework in various aspects of research methodology.

This class presents qualitative research methodologies as alternatives to purely quantitative, statistically based techniques of investigation. Topics covered may include participant observation, grounded theory, ethnography, phenomenology and narrative approaches to research design. Data collection techniques such as interviews and focus groups are explored. Methods of analysis, writing and presenting qualitative research are presented. All techniques will be examined in the context of the scholar-practitioner model of translational research to advance students’ ability to become independent researchers.

This course will provide students with the fundamental skills needed to conduct research and analyze data. The class will also cover the computation and use of various descriptive statistics including the definition different types of variables and how to choose the appropriate scale of measurement best suited to that variable. The class will also cover the computation and use of various descriptive statistics including measures of central tendency and measures of variability, both of which are fundamental to data analysis and have broad application to many aspects of research. The concepts that are covered in Descriptive Statistics will serve as the basis for more advanced coursework and data analysis. Some time will be devoted to the presentation of descriptive statistics in written and graphic formats.

Building on knowledge and skills gained in Quantitative Research Methods I, the course will address: the framing of research questions; the selection of appropriate research methods and designs; the selection of appropriate statistics for data analysis; the principles of analysis; interpretation of findings; and the presentation of results. Students will learn how the techniques covered in the class apply to the translational and evaluation phases of the scholar-practitioner model.

Application of Theory and Research

9 semester credits.

The course will discuss and apply the Scholar Practitioner Model to conduct research in real life problems in their professional area of specialization (e.g., Education, Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Health Sciences Administration, Media Psychology, for profit and non for profit organizations etc.).

More and more emphasis is being placed on using evidence-based practices in the professions. This course will present leading evidence-based practices and help students understand how evidence-based practices are evaluated, implemented and assessed.

This course will help students select and apply various qualitative and quantitative research methods used in professional settings to examine professional issues. Students will learn to implement a framework for defining applied research questions, applying appropriate research methodologies and assessing the effectiveness of implementation outcomes. The goal of the Seminar is to guide students in the preparation of a Research Proposal that will define their research questions and the method they will use to carry out their professional research.

Proposal Development

12 semester credits.

This is a transitional course in the PsyD program. In this course the student introduced to the steps of the dissertation proposal, and the Dissertation. Through the guide and teaching of a faculty member with expertise in research methods and statistics, and doctoral dissertation experience, students begin the first phase in developing their PsyD Research Proposal that includes identifying their research topic, literature review, and proposed associated research methodology. By the completion of this course students will select a Dissertation Chair and Committee members. Also, students are introduced to the Dissertation Management System (DMS) that will be utilized from this initial transition and continuing throughout the entire dissertation process.

Students will refine their Research topic and literature review, and begin to develop the Dissertation Proposal based on knowledge gained in the previous courses with the assistance of the dissertation chair and the dissertation committee.

This course is one of the courses that will lead to the completion of the Dissertation Proposal. At this time student should continue to work with their dissertation Chair and committee members.

This is the time when students prepare the Proposal for defense and defend the proposal successfully. Students will prepare and present the final research proposal to the IRB committee for approval.

Doctoral Dissertation

This course provides students with a thorough orientation to the Doctor of Psychology Program and the scholar-practitioner model. This course is designed to establish and inculcate the scholar-practitioner perspective and demonstrate how translational research techniques are used to produce applied solutions in professional practice. Through a series of applied research articles and discussions students will learn about the process the Scholar-Practitioner uses to translate theory to practice.

This course is designed to examine psychology of organizational leadership theories as it relates to individuals, groups, and organizations. Students will examine the psychological behavior at various units of analysis and how each unit contributes to sound leadership practices in an organization. Special emphasis is placed on theories of ethics in organizational leadership within each unit of analysis in an organization.

This course addresses the scientific study of and theoretical underpinnings of managing human resources in various organizational settings. Special topics include underlying theories relative to ethics in human resource management, job analysis, personnel selection, justice, onboarding and orientation processes, performance appraisals and training.

In this course, students analyze theories associated with collaboration in organizational leadership both internal and external to an organization. Students will examine various psychological organizational leadership models relative to internal and external stakeholders, collaborative competencies across a variety of settings to include for-profit, non-profit and public organizations.

Students seeking to enroll in Touro University Worldwide’s PsyD program must meet the following criteria to be considered for admission:

  • Have earned a Master’s degree from an accredited institution. If the degree was awarded overseas, it must be from an institution that is approved by the Ministry of Education.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.4 in the accredited Master’s Program

Students, who meet the above criteria, will be required to complete the following steps in order to be admitted and enrolled at TUW:

  • Submit an application.
  • Submit official transcripts from all institutions attended. Transcripts must come directly from the issuing institutions. Students who completed college coursework outside the United States must have their transcripts translated and evaluated. (See Foreign Credit for additional information.)
  • Submit two letters of recommendation: one from someone familiar with the prospective student’s academic work; and a professional reference from someone who has supervised the prospective student in a work environment (preferably the current supervisor, excluding family members ).
  • Submit a Doctoral Entrance Essay: The entrance essay is an essential part of the Doctoral Program and serves as the initial component of the student’s research portfolio. The entrance essay takes the form of a narrative presenting candidates’ biography, career plan, and goals in pursuing the doctorate at Touro University Worldwide.

The Doctoral Admissions Committee will evaluate the essay. Committee members seek evidence regarding critical qualities and abilities including:

  • Motivation, maturity of judgment, and creativity;
  • Evidence of a sound personal agenda that includes achievable personal and professional objectives;
  • Awareness of intellectual strengths as well as skills needing development;
  • Awareness of program requirements
  • Proficiency with standard written English including the ability to express concepts and communicate meaning in concise writing

The Doctoral Entrance Essay components should include the following:

  • Biographical Component Earlier learning experiences, both formal and informal, should be described. Characterize in terms of the nature and general outcome prior study, related work experience, and participation in scholarly research (if any).
  • Career Plan Component Explain how a doctoral-level education fits with stated career plan and goals. How will doctoral study, in conjunction with background and interests, further those goals?
  • The reasons for selecting the TUW program rather than another doctoral program;
  • The particular goals anticipated to be attained through completion of the doctoral curriculum;
  • Proposed topics being considered for the dissertation or research program/exegesis paper project.

Dissertation Process

The online PsyD program includes several steps. The first steps are courses in theory, research and putting theory to practice. Upon completion of the required courses, the student begins pre-Dissertation work (Proposal) and eventually writes their Dissertation. Each student will work with a faculty dissertation chair and committee in the completion of the proposal and dissertation phase. To personalize their academic journey for greater outcomes, students will choose a topic to help them focus their research activities and allow for skill development that helps conduct applied research resulting in real-world solutions.

The time it will take to complete the Doctor of Psychology in Human and Organizational Psychology (PsyD) degree online can vary. The duration of the program depends on several factors, including the number of credits accepted for transfer and whether or not students take time off between semesters.

The typical length of time for the Doctor of Psychology in Human and Organizational Psychology (PsyD) is three (3) years.

Disclaimer: Students who enroll full-time (12 credits per semester for three semesters each academic year) can complete the degree in two and half (2.5) years. Students who enroll part-time (six credits per semester for three semesters each academic year) will complete the PsyD program in 3.5 years.

Program Description/Overview

The program prepares graduates for a variety of practitioner careers on the human side of organizations and for teaching. Career practice areas include management consulting, organizational development and change, people analytics, and organizational leadership - any area where principles of industrial and organizational psychology make a difference. This post-master’s degree can also support careers in diversity and inclusion, talent management/human resources, talent development, strategic planning facilitation, talent assessment, and employee engagement analytics.

This program is an intensive, year-round, three-year (15-term) program where students have the option to attend part-time and take longer than three years to complete.

Effective January Term 2023, Alliant International University will not be accepting applications for admission or admitting new students to the on-ground modality of this program at the San Diego campus.

Program Learning Outcomes/Goals

PLO1: Explain and apply industrial-organizational psychology principles, concepts, models, theories, and methods.

PLO2: Explain and apply ethical and legal principles to situations in industrial-organizational psychology.

PLO3: Demonstrate a positive, pro-active, and non-judgmental attitude towards diverse cultures and identities.

PLO4: Design culturally competent professional services in respective areas for diverse populations.

PLO5: Analyze data, evaluate results and communicate findings using applied and academic research methods.

PLO6: Explain and apply research, psychometric, and people analytics concepts to problems in industrial-organizational psychology.

PLO7: Critically evaluate and synthesize the industrial-organizational psychology and related literature.

Training Model

Coursework emphasizes higher levels of critical thinking in a sequential and developmental manner for both practical organizational diagnosis and critical evaluation of research literature and making an original contribution to existing research. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are woven throughout the program. An emphasis on needs analysis and organizational diagnosis drives the practitioner courses.

Critical thinking is developed through the integration of discipline-specific theories, models, concepts and methods in the development of both practitioner and research skills. 

  • Practitioner skills are developed through increasingly challenging practical situations: Students are first presented with literature, then case studies and other instructional methods that evoke the practitioner context, and after that practical exams or project-based learning, and finally applied projects. 
  • The progression of learning research skills involves critically evaluating existing studies in theory courses right from the start and learning statistical, research, and people-analytics methods followed by production of a dissertation. Both research and practical skills are assessed in a three-part doctoral comprehensive exam where each part is embedded in a course.

Consistent with contemporary work environments, students work both individually and in groups (virtual groups for online students) in their coursework. By working in groups, students develop advanced skills in business communication, working with people who have different working styles than themselves, and learn through experience the importance of valuing diversity and appreciating multicultural issues.

Professional Behavior Expectations/Ethical Guidelines

As professionals-in-training, students in the program are required, in addition to all university-wide conduct requirements, to comply with the ethics code of the American Psychological Association and be familiar with professional guidelines and standards appropriate for practitioners in a business setting. Any ethical or professional behavior problems may be referred to the SERC and Program Director for action.

Internship, Practicum, and/or Dissertation Information

A three-course sequence for professional skills development and applied projects will enable students to apply industrial and organizational psychology competencies to prepare for practical experience in a practice area of their choosing and in a way that aligns with the stage in their career.

One option in the applied project courses enables students to take on an internship. The availability of an internship outside of California is based on the state in which the student is located and requires prior approval.

The other options are virtual, practical projects or virtual, applied research projects. A virtual project in a company could include writing up a past project from the student’s experience as a case and conducting a reanalysis of the case based on theories, principles and methods from coursework and proposing a better solution than was actually implemented.   

The program comprises eight dissertation courses. In the initial dissertation course, students will participate in synchronous workshops covering effective literature searches, academic writing, the research process, and data analysis, forming the foundation of their dissertation. Subsequent dissertation courses will guide students through the successful completion of each aspect of their dissertation. Encouragement is provided for students to finalize their dissertations during the eighth dissertation course.
