NBC Sports will present daily coverage of the 2023 Dakar Rally on Peacock starting Jan. 1 at 6:30 p.m. ET.

The endurance race classic will be contested over 14 stages through Sunday, Jan. 15, and highlights, interviews and features will be available on Peacock and NBC Sports digital platforms.

There are more than 550 entrants in the 45th running of the event, which will be contested in the desert, canyons, dunes and mountains of Saudi Arabia for the fourth consecutive year.

There are several American contenders in the field . Austin Jones will return to defend his SSV title, and 2020 champion Ricky Brabec is among the favorites in bikes with Skyler Howes and Mason Klein. In the light prototype division, Seth Quintero, 20, returns after setting a record for stage wins last year.

CNBC will present three hour-long encore presentations throughout the event (Sat., Jan. 7 at noon ET, Sun., Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. ET, and Sun., Jan. 15 at noon ET) that will be streamed on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.

Good individual results and setbacks

The effort paid off: Team Audi Sport shaped the 2023 Dakar Rally with innovation and performance right up to the end despite various setbacks. The Audi RS Q e-tron¹ with its electric drive concept² scored a total of 14 podium results on 15 event days including the prologue. In addition, the Audi drivers led the rally for three days for the first time. However, a series of punctures, the accident-related retirements of Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz and Stéphane Peterhansel/Edouard Boulanger as well as a massive loss of time for Mattias Ekström/Emil Bergkvist prevented a better result than 14th place.

“We’ll be back in 2024”

Oliver Hoffmann, Board Member for Technical Development at Audi, visited the motorsport team in Saudi Arabia and recognized many achievements: “The pace of our innovative Audi RS Q e-tron¹ was good right from the start and also showed at the end. Unfortunately, we also had bad luck in the desert and many punctures. Despite the setbacks, the team celebrated a finish thanks to strong performances. We will now analyze all areas. A podium was our goal. It remains so, because we will definitely compete again in 2024.” After the second outing at the Dakar Rally Rolf Michl, Head of Motorsport at Audi, drew a mixed conclusion: “We experienced all the highs and lows at this edition of the Dakar Rally. The top results in the daily classifications show that we are among the fastest with our innovative RS Q e-tron¹. And with a car that produces the lowest emissions. However, from tyre and chassis damage when encountering obstacles on the rough tracks to the accidents, we have also experienced many disappointments. Now we are thoroughly working through all aspects.”

Audi in the lead

Mattias Ekström/Emil Bergkvist led the world’s toughest desert rally after the prologue, their teammates Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz on the two following days. However, a series of 14 punctures on the first four desert stages, spread across all three driver teams, cost Audi valuable time. Further setbacks followed when Carlos Sainz damaged his suspension in the scree of the third stage and in an accident on the sixth stage. Similarly, a stone invisible in the desert dust destroyed a suspension on Mattias Ekström’s car on the seventh stage.

Sainz and Peterhansel out

The 14-time Dakar winner Stéphane Peterhansel was no longer in the race at this point. After jumping off a dune, his car landed so hard that co-driver Edouard Boulanger was taken to hospital with back pain. The diagnosed vertebral injury was subsequently treated by specialists in Germany. “Three stage results in the top three showed what was possible,” says Stéphane Peterhansel. The day before their retirement, the French driver pairing was still in a promising position in second place overall.  

With Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz, a second Audi driver duo followed just behind in fourth place. “But then it seemed that nothing was going in our favor this year,” Carlos Sainz summed up. “The entire team was well prepared but two accidents prevented our finish. That’s how motorsport can be sometimes, unfortunately.” Five times the Spaniard and his co-driver Lucas Cruz finished among the top three in the stage results until their retirement.

Ekström and Bergkvist strong

All hopes therefore rested on Mattias Ekström/Emil Bergkvist. The Swedes, who are contesting only their third Dakar Rally, once again mastered the demanding competition with more than 4,200 special stage kilometers and almost 8,900 kilometers in total as the best Audi team. “It was a tough rally: we never gave up even after the high time losses,” said two-time DTM Champion and World Rallycross Champion Ekström.  

In the demanding sand dunes in the Empty Quarter, Ekström/Bergkvist even achieved third and second place of the day on the marathon stage without evening service on January 12 and 13. In total, they were among the top three in the stage rankings six times during the 2023 Dakar Rally. Almost seven hours behind after repairs to their own car, but also their help for their teammate Sainz, meant 14th place overall in the end.

It’s go time! The grueling Dakar Rally starts this New Year’s Eve, December 31st, kicking off what organizers say will be one of the most challenging races the event has seen in years. The biggest obstacle anyone will face is the route itself with 14 punishing stages, loaded with even more dunes and potential pitfalls. In fact, this edition will feature the longest distance since 2014. Add to the menu the introduction of major rule changes designed to shake up the competition and you know Dakar 2023 is not to be missed.

To document the action, Dakar organizers say they have dedicated significant resources to bring the adventure to TV viewers recruiting:

• 4 TV helicopters
• 8 vehicles roaming the tracks and roads
• 23 production and broadcast trucks
• 22 cameramen
• 26 on-board cameras
• 150 people mobilized

Where to Watch

In the United States, NBC Sports has announced they will have daily coverage of the 2023 Dakar Rally from January 1 through January 15. Broadcasting starts every day at 6:30 p.m. ET on Peacock and will entail 30-minute programs. Highlights of every show (all 14 stages and the rest day), exclusive racer interviews, and features from the race will be available on Peacock and NBC Sports digital platforms including NBC’s Motosports YouYube channel .

In addition, CNBC will present three hour-long encore presentations throughout the event (Sat., Jan. 7 at noon ET, Sun., Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. ET, and Sun., Jan. 15 at noon ET) that will be streamed on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.

Daily coverage schedule on Peacock and CNBC:

Outside our shores, the long-standing French broadcaster of the Dakar, France Télévisions Group , says their channels will dedicate four daily shows to the 45th edition of the Dakar from December 31, 2022 to January 15, 2023. The Dakar international daily show lasts 52 minutes and spans all the categories for both professional and amateur competitors. In France, this show will be broadcast every day at 9 pm from January 1-7 on Eurosport 1 (repeat on E2 at 10:30 pm) and at 9 pm from January 8-15 on Eurosport 2 (repeat on E1 at 11:30 pm).

All the live broadcasts and replays of the shows dedicated to the rally will be available on the france.tv website and the francetvsport app.

Most of the other long-standing broadcasters of the Dakar adapt the daily show to put the spotlight on their locals which include: RTL 7 (Netherlands), TVE and TV3 Catalunya (Spain), LNK (Lithuania), SSC (Saudi Arabia), BeIN Sport (Middle East), ESPN (Latin America), SBS (Australia), JSports (Japan) and, as mentioned above, the NBC Group (United States).

Starting this year, Fox Sports will cover the Dakar in Mexico, TV NOVA will replace Czech TV as the broadcaster of the race in the Czech Republic and the Swedish digital platform Aftonbladet will run daily features on the event. Moreover, Dakar organizers say Sky Sports Italia will be covering the Dakar with special correspondents on the ground and a robust news package. 

FloRacing and Red Bull TV

The popular sports broadcaster and streaming service, FloRacing , will be covering the 2023 Dakar Rally from December 31, 2022 to January 15, 2023. You can enjoy the race online by signing up to their streaming service or access the channel on your TV through Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast and Apple TV. If you are on the go, you can also opt to download the FloSports app on iOS or Android.

An option that puts the spotlight on Red Bull racers is Red Bull TV, which will provide daily highlights and offers an app to catch the action on different devices .

The official rally site Dakar.com and its mobile application are the main hub for all the information to follow the race in real time. These resources offer live monitoring of the race with real-time tracking and cartography, live commentary, provisional results by category and kilometer point, daily stage videos, rider spotlight videos, interviews and more. Many of the videos are also accessible through the official Dakar YouTube channel and are available in four languages: French, English, Spanish and Arabic.

In the car category, the first-timers Ekström, Peterhansel, Sainz and Chicherit made up the top 7 of the prologue together with the 2022 podium, composed of Al Attiyah, Loeb and Al-Rajhi ! The cast of the new season is now clear. It is more or less the same in the T3 and T4 categories, where young drivers and former bikers making the transition to four wheels have started to rub shoulders with the established stars. A new generation is rising, albeit at a more measured pace than in the car category. Martin Macík drew first blood in the truck race. No points will be awarded for the prologue, but the recorded differences will be added to the times for stage 1, which will only grant points to FIA competitors: 5 points for the top driver.

Development of the first 911 with hybrid drive completed successfully

The first Porsche 911 sports car for the road with a hybrid drive is in the starting blocks. Following an extensive development and testing programme, the new 911 with a performance-focused hybrid drive is ready for series production.

“For the first time in our icon’s 61-year history, we are installing a hybrid drive system in a roadgoing 911. This innovative performance hybrid makes the 911 even more dynamic,” says Frank Moser, Vice President Model Line 911 and 718. “We left nothing to chance during development and tested the new 911 under all sorts of conditions all over the world. From the freezing cold to scorching heat, as was the case during the final stages of testing in Dubai. Whether at a high drivetrain load in the demanding conditions of mountain passes or in the stop-and-go traffic of an urban environment, the new 911 has mastered even the most difficult challenges with aplomb. All in all, our engineers and test drivers clocked up more than five million kilometres of development driving."

Faster than its predecessor on the Nürburgring by 8.7 seconds

Testing and tuning on the Nürburgring Nordschleife has always had a special significance during development of the 911. Over the course of performance testing, Porsche brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister completed a lap of the circuit in 7:16.934 minutes – 8.7 seconds faster than the corresponding version of the predecessor model. The test car was equipped with standard road tyres, plus the aero kit with a fixed rear wing that has been available as an option for several model generations now, and which provides increased downforce at high speeds.

“The new 911 has become considerably faster on the track,” says Bergmeister. “We have more grip, significantly more power, and the spontaneous response of the performance hybrid is a great advantage.”

The Agricultural Marketing Specialist (entry-level specialist) is responsible for representing the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS ) in Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. The incumbent f acilitates linkages between U.S. exporters and host country importers, identifies marketing practices to increase trade opportunities, and resolves market access issues affecting U.S. agricultural products. Develops and maintains broad range of industry and government stakeholder contacts (working-to-mid levels) to gain cooperation on substantive agricultural matters. Analyzes and drafts reports on agricultural commodities, market developments, and market policy. Implements and evaluates various planned projects and activities, including market promotional and trade development programs.

Qualifications and Evaluations

EXPERIENCE:   Minimum three years of work experience required in one or more fields of agricultural economics, agricultural/product marketing, agricultural policy, business/project management, and marketing analysis/research that includes significant analysis and report writing.

JOB KNOWLEGDE:  Good knowledge of FAS goals, programs, reporting requirements and procedures, and of U.S. agricultural policies and trading practices. Thorough knowledge of agricultural practices, market conditions, and government policies in the host country.   Knowledge of host government structure and responsibilities of various Ministries and offices, congressional and legislative processes as it relates to economic, trade, and agricultural policy matters is required. Good understanding of international agreements relating to agricultural policy and agricultural economic supply/demand theories and concepts.

EDUCATION:   Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics, Marketing, Communications, Agriculture, Agribusiness, or International Trade is required.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook) to create documents and spreadsheets, maintain and update databases, and develop presentations . Use of FAS specialized software for reporting purposes . Must be familiar with agricultural production, global agricultural trade concepts, general marketing strategies, and economic supply/demand concepts. Required to analyze statistical data and maintain data sets for accurate commodity and trade reporting. Drafts detailed, complex reports on markets and trade policy, as needed.   Must have excellent time management skills to cope with the diversity of work and deadlines. Ability to work effectively with government, public, and private individuals to obtain information and resolve trade issues.

LANGUAGE:   E nglish level IV (Fluent) Reading/Writing/Speaking is required.
