MTC: Multiplication Tables Check Year 4, Key Stage 2

Practice times tables test for y4, ks2, take an mtc practice test.

25 questions. 6 seconds per question. 3 seconds between questions.

You scored: /

Marked Questions

The mtc: who and how.

From the 2019/2020 academic year, all children in Year 4 in English state schools (aged 8-9) will sit the new Multiplication Tables Check (MTC).

The test will be taken in June each year.

Children will take the times tables test on a computer or tablet.

The Department for Education published their MTC framework and this site follows their formulas to create practice tests.

The questions are delivered at the same pace as the official MTC.

How to Practise for the Y4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

The best way to practise for a standardised test is to take 'practice tests' that mimic the real thing as closely as possible.

Practise until you're un-phased by the format and can do yourself justice.

The tests on this page are ideal for practice.

BUT if you don't already know your times tables pretty well these practice tests won't help you to learn them.

They will, however, show you which multiplication tables you're shakey on, so that you can practise them separately .

How to Learn your Times Tables (Multiplication Facts)

Before you start practicing for your MTC, it's a good idea to learn your times tables... properly!

There's only one way to learn times tables, and that's by repetition - i.e. practicing!

If you don't use your times tables every day for the maths you're learning in school, you'll need to repeatedly recall your multiplication facts daily or weekly from now until you take the test.

There are many ways to go about learning your times tables, for example using flash cards, youtube songs, multiplication games, or my out-and-out favourite method:

Singing each times table with the absolute minimum of faff .

Using the catchy chants from Talking Times Tables you can recite each times table in less than 15 seconds.

It's fast, it's efficient, and it gets practice over with very quickly so that you can get on with your day!

You can try it for yourself here .

How the MTC Questions are Chosen: The MTC Framework

Each test will have:

  • A total of 25 questions.
  • No reversals (e.g if 4x3 is on the test, then 3x4 will not be).
  • No questions from the 1 times table (e.g. not 1x7 or 7x1).
  • Up to 2 questions from each of the 2 and 10 times tables.
  • Between 1 and 3 questions from each of the 3, 4, 5 and 11 times tables.
  • Between 2 and 4 questions from each of the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables.

Children will have:

  • 6 seconds to answer each question.
  • 3 seconds between each question.

Please note: The MTC Framework considers the first number in the sum to be the times table, and the second number to be the multiple.

i.e. <times table> x <multiple>

So 7x4 comes from the 7 times table (not the 4 times table).

If you recite times tables, you might think of it the other way around: 1x7=7,  2x7=14 etc

The numbers of questions listed above refer to how many times a number can appear as the first number in the sum.

(e.g. "Between 2 and 4 questions from the 7 times table" means there should be between 2 and 4 questions that begin 7x...)

There are more rules, relating to how many KS1 (2, 5 and 10 times tables) level questions can be included overall, and how many times each multiple (the second number) can appear. The practice tests on this site follow all of the rules. You can read the published framework here: Department for Education: Multiplication tables check assessment framework .

In the grid method, your child will partition (break apart) each number that is going to be multiplied. In this example, they partition each number into tens and ones – 65 is partitioned into 60 and 5, and 74 into 70 and 4. They will then find the product of each pair of numbers before adding all the values together:

70 × 60 = 4200 70 × 5 = 350 4 × 60 = 240 4 × 5 = 20   4200 + 350 + 240 + 20 = 4810

Your child will also be expected to use formal written methods like short multiplication. By practising lots of different ways of multiplying numbers, you help your child to gain confidence and flexibility in their thinking. This will let them pick the best method for any given situation.

3. Play the 1 to 21 game

You can help your child practise all four operations at home by playing the 1 to 21 game.

Ask them to roll a dice five times and record each number shown on the dice on a piece of paper. For example, 1, 4, 3, 5, 3. They then need to find a way to reach an answer of 1 using any operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and/or division) on the numbers.

Your child can only use each number once and they have to use at least two numbers in each calculation. For example, we could get the answer of 1 by calculating 3 ÷ 3, 5 – 4, 4 – 3, and so on. Then ask your child to find a calculation with the answer of 2 using any operation, then an answer of 3 and so on until they reach 21.

You could make this game even more challenging by saying that they have to use at least three, four, or even all five numbers to make it really tricky! Print out our activity sheet to have a go:

Activity: One to twenty-one

times tables homework y4

Find ways to make all the numbers 1 to 21.

4. Talk about factors and multiples

Try to help your child identify these and use these words when they talk about multiplication and division:

  • Factors – a whole number that can be multiplied by another whole number to make a particular third whole number. For example, 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 18 are all factors of 18.
  • Factor pairs – these are pairs of numbers that make up other numbers when multiplied together. For example, 6 and 3 are a factor pair of 18. Another factor pair of 18 is 9 and 2.
  • Common factors – Common factors are the factors that are common to two numbers. For example, the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. The factors of 8 are 1, 2, 4, and 8. So, the common factors of 12 and 8 are 1, 2, and 4.

Multiplication Tables Check

This activity exactly mirrors the 'Multiplication Tables Check' that will be given to children at the end of Year 4. They are tested on their multiplication tables up to 12 x 12. There are twenty-five questions and children have six seconds to answer each question and three seconds between questions. The questions are generated randomly using the same rules as the 'Multiplication Tables Check' (see below).

Results can be downloaded and printed at the end of the test.

A similar activity which tests recall of number bonds can be found here.

Here you can find additional information about practicing times tables at primary school. The 1 times table, 2 times table, 3 times table, 4 times table, 5 times table and 10 times table are usually the first times tables which have to be learned. The 6 times table, 7 times table, 8 times table, 9 times table, 11 times table, 12 times table and of course all the tables in random order are the next step. This is part of KS1 and KS2.

New is the Multiplication Tables Check, this is a key stage 2 assessment to be taken by pupils at the end of year 4, from the 2019 / 2020 academic year onwards. With this check there are asked 25 questions on the times tables 2 to 12.

Not every child finds it easy to learn all the tables, so it is a good idea to keep on practicing them regularly after year 5. There are a few tricks which make it easier to learn the tables and continue to master them, such as putting the smallest number first, which makes it easier for many children to answer correctly. For example 4 x 9 is easier to work out than 9 x 4. Switching the multiplication sum around makes it easier to answer. What also often helps is to use the tables you know well for answering the sums in the more difficult tables. One example of this is 6 x 7, which is often said to be tricky. If you do 5 x 7 first and then add 1 x 7 it is suddenly easier to answer. You can do this the other way round too. For instance with 4 x 7 you can do 5 x 7 first then subtract 1 x 7.

Why do we put so much effort into learning tables? Well, the times tables keep on coming up in the next primary school years and even when you're at secondary school. You don't see them as tables, but as part of bigger mathematical problems. And it isn't only at school, but in your everyday life it is useful to know your times tables well so you can quickly work things out, for instance when you are buying or selling vegetables on the market. If you have any questions, comments or ideas for timestables.co.uk, please use our contact form. We'd be glad to hear from you.

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

attractions elektrostal photo

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.

sights of the electric steel of the Moscow region

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrostal attractions photo with description

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Elektrostal attractions

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

attractions of the city of Elektrostal

In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.

Elektrostal attractions

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.

Coordinates of Elektrostal in decimal degrees

Coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
