General Information

With Electa Live you can create assignments (homework) and quizzes. Students complete the respective task or quiz and submit their work. Teachers assess the work and accept the assignment.

Assignments can be delivered separately to students or groups of students or can be provided as a part of online courses resources and activities to the course enrolees. For more information about this please refer to Resource Access Permissions Explained .

Assignments vs Quizzes

Assignments are simple or complex tasks (or homework). They consist of a title, description and optionally an attachment. The assignment title is providing basic information about what students need to do. More details about the task are provided in the description area. Optionally, the teacher may attach a file as a part of the task where even more details are provided.

Each assignment has an availability date range - that is - a starting date/time and a deadline until students can work on it.

​An example of a simple assignment can be the following:

Title : Read Chapter Two: The Vanishing Glass from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Description : Complete this task during the weekend. After reading the chapter draw a picture of your favorite part and upload it .

When students complete their task the teacher can give points. Such assignments are called "evaluated" or assessed. For each assignment the teacher specifies what is the maximum number of points students can gain.

Quizzes, similarly to the assignments have a title, description and an availability date range. Quizzes however have a list of questions that has to be answered. Questions can be with one correct answer, multiple correct answers or open questions where students provide a free-form answer.

Each question carries certain number of points. Answers to questions with predefined answers are automatically assessed upon completion. Answers to open questions have to be reviewed by the teacher and assessed manually. Quizzes are always evaluated.

Quiz vs. Test vs. Exam: Difference and Application

he importance of assessment for online learning provision is enormous. How else would you know that a learner gets the materials, or your online course serves its goal? 

And there, you’d know that assessments aren’t just checkpoints. They guide the teacher and the learner toward a better understanding of the material, degree of acquired knowledge, and course effectiveness.

But what is the best way to assess somebody's knowledge? You could think of a test, a quiz, or even an exam. So, there is no definite answer, at least for now. Moreover, they aren’t the same despite course creators use them interchangeably.

Before we jump to the glossary and the differences between different types of learner’s assessments, let’s cover some basics.

What is a test?

A test is a common and widely-used type of assessment that focuses on certain aspects of a course or module, has from 15 to 70 questions that can take up to 1 hour, and is given a grade for its completion typically. 

The test aims to reflect the materials covered in a section and module or even lessons on a specific subject. Due to their size and relevance, they often are the metric showing whether a learner understands the topic or should revise certain parts or lessons of the module. • When to apply? Tests are a final checkpoint to include before jumping to a new concept, topic, or module. Therefore, use it after the module, series of lessons, or a large and complicated topic.
• Format of questions: Because of covering a bigger amount of materials, it usually offers more variety and may include essay and open-ended questions in addition to standard multiple choice and true/false questions. Besides, multimedia and parts of materials can be used in text as well. 

What is the difference between a test and a quiz? The test is larger in scope, offering more questions and bringing more variety to knowledge assessment after the module or section, while the quiz is shorter and used after a lesson.

What is an exam?

An exam is a comprehensive instrument to measure students’ understanding of the system of knowledge and skills upon completing a course or one of the course milestones, taking typically at least 40 minutes of the student’s time. 

The exam's main purpose is to evaluate whether the student has acquired a system of knowledge that allows him to proceed further with the learning or confirms that he fully understands and can apply. That’s why completing an exam is the key to passing the whole course.

• When to apply? Due to their comprehensive nature, exams are often included at the end of midterms (if talking about academic intuitions), blocks of modules around specific subjects, complex topics, or the whole course .
• Format of questions: As they aim to assess the system of knowledge, expect multiple-choice or true/false questions, they are likely to have open-ended questions regarding case studies, scenarios, and issues for a student to show how the knowledge can be applied. 

In terms of test vs exam comparison, we can say that they often seem alike, especially when used together in courses. However, the main difference between exams and tests is the length and extensiveness. Thus, the exam is usually the final stop before course completion, while the test is a checkpoint before the next topic.

Ways to create quizzes and tests for online learning

Many of us have a good understanding of what a test looks like. Apart from the fact that whole life is a test, we encountered plenty in school and university. 

Yet, how do course creators, online tutors, and teachers integrate different assessment types in their online courses? Usually, they use an LMS, course creation softwar e or a course editor, under which they have three options that allow crafting tests of various complexity. 

Method #1: Everything starts with a quiz 

Well, most of the LMSs offer tools to create test and quiz assignments. However, the crucial part is their flexibility. For instance, for quiz and test applications, the easy quiz editor with single or multiple-choice and free-text options should be ideal for assessing knowledge after the lesson or webinar. 

Simplicity matters here, especially if you have different topics and want to leave room for the instructor’s review.

Note. That’s what a proper quiz editor looks like, offering the aforementioned question types.

Method #2: A mix of questions brings you a test

Developing a decent test requires diverse questions, a particular focus on ideas and analysis, and creativity. There, you may use a quiz approach, but make the questions and tasks more exciting, comprehensive, and deeper. 

Why? Tests are more extensive and should evaluate student’s knowledge on a more systematic level. Thus, the tool you are using should have room for various and multiple questions and engaging formats.

Note . If the tool offers a decent editor, you can add pictures and links and define formatting for a better learning experience.

Method #3. Create a separate space for an exam or test

For a complicated and diverse test or comprehensive exam, you should use a specific solution or have different ways to compensate for it. 

Within LMS, you can create a separate module for the exam, where in the content part you describe the structure, then use quizzes for testing and assignments for an analysis part with text or uploaded files. 

A good example of an engaging exam can be two 20-30-question tests followed by an assignment with a case study, analysis, or scenario.

• #1. Kahoot : a learning platform that allows you to create games and interactive quizzes with multiple-choice, true/false, and open-ended questions and puzzles. You can use it with your presentations to make learning more engaging.
• #2. Quizizz : a user-friendly platform for making and creating assignments and quizzes with more than 18 question types, supporting media, and offering reports and leaderboards. It can add to classroom engagement. 
• #3. Quizlet : a learning tool that offers gaming, quiz, and teaching options, allowing you to create flashcards, tests, and study sets. Importantly, it provides AI support and sets for various subjects, from specific exams to biology.
• #4. Aha Slides : an interactive presentation tool where you can create quizzes and open-ended questions.

Exams are the most extensive, evaluating systematic knowledge and being crucial for course completion.

Google Classroom: When to Use the Different Assignments & How to Assign Work

Here is a guide to set the different assignments under the Classwork tab in Google Classroom. This brief tutorial shows the different options; assignment, quiz assignment, question and material, when and how to assign them.

The object of this tutorial is to give you an overview of what you can achieve with the different assignments supported on Google Classroom. You will need to first head over to the Classwork tab, second after Stream on the top once you are inside your classroom. This tutorial assumes that you have created your first classroom. You can see how to start your own virtual classroom in under 2 minutes for help. We will cover the following:

• create assignments and questions
• use topics to organise classworks into modules or units
• order work by dragging them up or down in Classwork page

Types of Assignment

There are four types of assignments you can create on Google Classroom. They are as follows:

• Assignment (points awarded, good for final assignment with manual marking and use of Rubric)
• Quiz assignment (points awarded, good for automatic marking and grading)
• Question (no points awarded, good for single question quick survey, short answer, multiple choice)
• Material (no points awarded, good for reading assignment or lesson preparations)

Apart from the above, you have the ability to reuse existing post and create topic header. The former lets you reuse posts you have published on Stream in this or other Classes. The latter is topic header you can add to organise the classwork by modules or units. Let’s start looking at each of these different classwork, when to use them and how to create them.

A. Assignment

Probably the most commonly used classwork is the assignment. Here you can pick one of the following top options when creating an assignment. Beyond filling in the title and instruction, choose to:

• Add an existing resource: Google Drive , Link , File or YouTube
• Create a new document: create a new Google Docs , Slides , Sheets , Drawings or Forms

The first option allows you to add a Google Drive, Link to web resources, upload or choose an online file to add to Classroom’s Google Drive. You can use this to assign work like “access the work files or resources in Google Drive”, “revise or research using this link”, “download, open and read the document attached” and “watch this video tutorial or recorded seminar”.

The second option lets you create online documents. This can be a word document, slide presentation file, spreadsheet, drawing or forms. There is no need to upload a document. Here is where your assignment is created and marked totally online. Use the option to assigning a copy to each student and marking them separately with in-line feedback, grade and comments.

As you can see Assignment covers a lot of grounds in terms of resources and online document format supported.

Step by Step Guide on How to Create an Assignment using Google Docs

Here is how to create an online assignment using Google Docs. [number correspond to image in gallery below]

• Open your class
• Click on the second tab, Classwork
• Click “ + Create ” button and choose Assignment
• In the pop up window, add Title and Instructions
• Click “ + Create ” button and choose Docs [4]
• A new tab will open to show the new Google Docs [5]
• Change the title of the document by clicking on Untitled document (top left corner)
• Enter the instruction for assignment into the body, look for  All changes saved in Drive  status in top bar then close tab and return to previous Assignment tab [5]
• Don’t worry if the document still says Untitled document, next to this click drop down menu and choose Make a copy for each student . [6]
• Complete the options in the right side bar (for course, all or select students, grade points, due date, topic and marking rubric (optional) then click Assign button. [7]

NOTE: You can also choose to Schedule the assignment, save or discard draft by clicking on the drop down arrow next to the Assign button.

You will then be returned to the Classwork page where you can see the assignment you have just created, click on it to open a summary card. [8]

B. Quiz Assignment

Based on Google Forms, the quiz is the other assignment you can create as classwork. This is great to gauge the students understanding of the subject. Like any questionnaire or form, you can use different field types when designing your form.

Step by Step Guide on How to Create an Quiz Assignment

• Click “ + Create ” button and choose Quiz Assignment
• A new pop-up window will appear, enter the Title and Instructions for this quiz
• Click on the Blank Quiz link to open the Google Forms file. Click on the title Blank Quiz to change this and start editing the quiz by completing and adding more questions including answers and points for automatic marking.
• Once you have completed your editing, look for All changes saved in Drive , close the tab and return to previous Assignment tab.
• Complete the options in the right side bar (for course, all or select students, grade points, due date, topic and marking rubric (optional) then click Assign button.

You will then be returned to the Classwork page where you can see the assignment you have just created, click on it to open a summary card.

C. Question

The third type of assignment is Question. This is more of a simple single question survey with option to choose between a short answer or multiple choice answer. Nothing more beyond that. It is probably the quickest to set up and least complicated. This is useful to get quick answers from the group. Students can be allowed to see everyones answers and change their answer. No points can be awarded for this assignment.

Step by Step Guide on How to Create Question as Assignment

• Click “ + Create ” button and choose Question
• A new pop-up window will appear, enter the Question and Instructions for this question
• Choose from drop down menu to select Short answer or Multiple choice .
• Here you can also add resources or create online files in Google Drive.
• Complete the options in the right side bar; class(es) the Question is for, assign to All or specific students, Points, Due date and Topic. Also choose if other students can reply to each other and edit their answer if Short answer is chosen. Or, choose if students can see class summary if Multiple choice is chosen.
• Click the Ask button when ready.

D. Material

The last and final assignment is the Material. Here you can assign learning materials for students to study and prepare. As before, you can upload a resource or create online file as material. Like Questions assignment type, no points can be awarded for Material assignment type.

Step by Step Guide on How to Create Material as Assignment

• Click “ + Create ” button and choose Material
• In the pop-up window, complete Title and Description field
• Choose to add a resource or + create online document
• Then configure the assignment using right sidebar, pick to assign to All students or select individuals and pick the Topic this comes under.
• When ready click the Post button.

A Tale of Two Online Quizzing Tools: Choosing between Canvas Quizzes and Gradescope Online Assignments

Online quizzes can be a good way to help students assess their learning. Faculty and instructors can now choose from two different options– Canvas Quizzes and Gradescope ’s online quizzing tool, which the company calls “ Online Assignments ”.

Though their functions and features largely overlap, there are significant differences that render them suitable for different purposes. This blog post will survey the various features of Canvas Quizzes and Gradescope Online Assignments to help instructors choose between the two tools.

If you teach a class in the Humanities or Social Sciences, Canvas Quizzes would be an ideal choice for creating small, low-stakes assessments. Canvas supports eleven question types, and you can quickly create a wide range of auto-graded questions to test students’ understanding of the course materials. Canvas’ support of question banks means that instructors can randomize and reuse questions and save questions from the current quiz for future reference.

However, if you need to make extensive use of LaTex or develop questions with sub-questions, you should choose Gradescope Online Assignments . Compared to Canvas, Gradescope offers better support for LaTex and Markdown to write formulas and equations and format the question text. As you add questions, you can preview the quiz on the right side of the screen. Gradescope Online Assignments allows the use of rubrics for each question and its sub-questions. You can even change rubrics on the fly, and Gradescope Online Assignments will automatically apply the changes to the graded questions.

Canvas Quizzes vs. Gradescope Online Assignments

Canvas Quizzes is native to Canvas and therefore fully integrated with other Canvas features like Speedgrader and Gradebook . Not only can the instructor create, deliver, and grade quizzes within Canvas, but s/he can also publish grades, review quiz result statistics, and communicate with students on the same platform.

Canvas Quizzes offers two types of quiz options that serve multiple pedagogical goals: ungraded practice quizzes , whose scores do not count towards students’ final grades, and graded quizzes for conducting low-stakes, summative assessments.

In terms of user-friendliness, Canvas Quizzes has a clear interface with intuitive features for creating and editing questions.  It currently supports 11 question types: multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blank, fill in multiple blanks, multiple answers, multiple dropdowns, matching, numerical answer, formula question, essay question, and file upload question. Canvas Quizzes supports the Rich Content Editor, with which the instructor can insert multimedia (images, video, URLs, and links to other Canvas materials) in question stems.

With Canvas Quizzes , the instructor can take advantage of the advanced feature of Question Groups to randomize questions within a quiz. Additionally, instead of creating individual questions from scratch, you can import questions from existing Question Banks from previous courses. This process is, of course, reversible: the instructor can save new questions to a question bank for future reuse.

Compared to Gradescope, Canvas Quizzes makes it easier to moderate online quizzes because it is native to Canvas and has direct access to the student roster. The instructor can assign quizzes to a section within a class or allow a student an extra attempt. Canvas Quizzes also facilitates the calculation of grades by keeping the highest/most recent/average score for a quiz that allows multiple attempts.

In contrast, Gradescope is a third-party tool that was originally conceived to facilitate grading paper-based assignments digitally. Online Assignments is the equivalent of Canvas Quizzes in Gradescope, and is an additional feature that allows instructors to create and grade fully online quizzes while utilizing Gradescope’s well-developed rubrics tool. Gradescope is integrated with Canvas; after enabling it in the course navigation, instructors can sync student rosters and sync grades for each item manually. In addition, the instructor needs to send out invitation links to students.

Gradescope Online Assignments supports fewer question types than Canvas Quizzes . The instructor can employ its question creation options to create the following types of questions: multiple choice, fill in the blank, fill in multiple blanks, multiple answers, numerical answer, short answer, essay question, and file upload question. Neither Question Groups nor Question Banks is available for Gradescope Online Assignments . Alternatively, the tool offers the option to add sub-questions to a stem question, which makes it easier to award partial credit to students. This feature may prove to be particularly useful for STEM classes.

Gradescope Online Assignments supports coding directly in lieu of using a graphical interface to create an online quiz. In Canvas Quizzes, instructors fill in a template for each question type using the Rich Text Editor; the process of creating a quiz question in Gradescope Online Assignments , on the other hand, is similar to playing with Lego bricks/coding. To provide a visual aid, the question creation interface is bisected so that you can preview the questions on the right side of your screen as you edit questions. This live preview feature is not available for Canvas Quizzes , where an instructor must first finish editing all the questions and then review them in a batch. Nevertheless, Canvas Quizzes allows you to preview and test quiz questions and settings from a student’s perspective.

The range of quiz moderation and delivery options provided by Gradescope Online Assignments largely overlaps with that of Canvas Quizzes . The instructor can set availability dates and time limits for online quizzes and allow multiple attempts in both cases.

You probably also know the best way to determine that is through a test . Or maybe it’s through a quiz — or maybe an exam. What’s the difference? Is there a difference?

The short answer is they’re essentially the same — but different. Confused? These words are often used interchangeably, but in an educational setting, they refer to different forms of evaluation.

General implications of quiz vs test vs exam

Of the three formats we’re defining, “test” is the most generic term and has the broadest application. Outside of an academic setting, you might have a blood test, an eye test, or a driving test. You might test something to see if it works.

Quizzes and exams are forms of tests. “Quiz” often implies a short or informal test, such as an unscheduled quiz (a pop quiz). Sometimes people even participate in quizzes for fun. Think of a pub quiz or a quiz show on TV. An exam has a more formal connotation, and you typically only see this in an academic setting. As a shortened form of “examination,” it implies a deeper and more final assessment.

While there is no formal standard, in an academic setting, these terms often refer to a hierarchy of evaluations — with a quiz as the most casual, an exam as the most serious, and a test somewhere in between.

What is a quiz?

Purpose and scoring. In a course setting, instructors most frequently give quizzes, which serve as a way for both teachers and students to see how well students understand the material. Quizzes help everyone focus on weak areas. A quiz covers a small amount of material, such as one lesson, page, or concept. Quizzes help keep students engaged and prepare them for tests, as well. Scores may or may not factor into the student’s overall course grade. If they do, they typically account for a much smaller percentage than tests or exams.

Format. Formats for quiz questions typically include fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, and true or false. Quizzes don’t usually include interpretive, open-ended questions, such as essay questions.

Length. Quizzes are shorter than tests. Whereas a test may have 50 questions or more, a quiz typically has 10 or fewer questions.

Like a quiz, they often include multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and true or false questions, but they usually also have open-ended questions, such as essays or short-answer questions that ask the student to explain a concept in their own words. There may even be image-based or listing and matching questions.

Length. Tests are longer than quizzes and typically have 40 to 50 questions or more.

What is an exam?

Like quizzes and tests, an exam is a tool to measure your students’ mastery of the course content, but it has weightier consequences. An exam is more formal in nature and often can determine whether a student passes or fails a class or course (as such, it may be given on a pass/fail basis). If the student fails the exam, they usually have to retake the exam or retake the entire course.

The difference between a test and an exam can be a little blurry, as some courses combine the two. Exams typically cover the entire course material. The format and length of an exam is similar to a test, but it is generally longer and more comprehensive. A mid-term or similar test may be referred to as an exam, since it occurs at a set interval and is a major factor in the final course grade.

Now that you know the difference between a quiz, a test, and an exam, you can plan your course assessments to best serve your students. Assignment or Material in Google Classroom – What is the Difference?

A source of some confusion when developing a course in Google Classroom is whether to post an Assignment or Material. It is important to distinguish between these two options. Keep reading to understand the differences.

In Google Classroom , on the Classwork tab, teachers can schedule posts. These can contain instructions and resources for students participating in the class. There are several choices including Assignment, Quiz assignment, Question, and Material.

Types of Google Classroom Posts

• Assignment: An assignment is a post that requires students to submit work upon completion. You can allocate points to the task or mark it as ungraded. For each person in the class, there is the option to assess the final submission and record the grade and/comments. Assignments are ideal for tracking and evaluating student progress.
• Quiz assignmen t: A quiz assignment ask a series of questions in Google Forms. You can assign points to each question and set the correct answer to automatically grade responses. Create this type of post to construct a test that assesses students’ knowledge of a topic.
• Question: Question is a post that asks either a short answer or multiple choice. You can assign points or leave it ungraded. A response does not automatically grade itself. This means, if your intention is to score the answer, the mark must be manually assigned. This option is best used for a quick review to gauge students’ understanding of a concept or to conduct a poll.
• Material: Material is a post that includes general information about the class or topic of study. This might include a course syllabus, reference sheet, or welcome message. The students read or view the file, web page, or video. Points cannot be assigned, nor can student activity be tracked.

Assignment or Material – Which is the Correct Choice?

To understand whether to pick Assignment or Material ask yourself this question… Do I need to track or grade the task? If yes, then you need to create an Assignment . However, if you only need to share information, then select Material .

The Grades tab is an electronic grading book that organizes Assignments into a table that allows teachers to:

• record student grade
• identify students whose assignments have not been turned in

IMPORTANT: Material does not show up on the Grades tab.

If you were teaching using these instructional materials as a curriculum unit below are some of the resources. Each is labelled as either an Assignment or Material. Use this example to make connections to your own curriculum units:

• Acid Rain Fact Sheet : Material – This is a resource that summarizes facts about acid rain. It is an information sheet in PDF format that can be attached to a Material post. It may assist students with research.
• Research Outline : Assignment – This is a resource that is a template for organizing facts about an environmental topic. Every student needs their own copy. For this reason, it should be attached to an Assignment post.
• Assignment Worksheets 1-18 : Assignment – These are worksheets with instructions on how to complete the task of building an infographic. Some worksheets include questions that students must answer, which means every student needs their own copy. Alternatively, some worksheets require students to submit work for grading. For these reasons, TechnoKids worksheets should be attached to Assignment posts.
• Coral Bleaching Infographic: Assignment – This is an example of a completed infographic – it does convey information. However, this file accompanies a worksheet with questions about the content. Since it is an additional resource that is required to complete a task, it is attached to an Assignment post.
• TechnoEarth Skill Summary: Material – This is a resource that summarizes technology skills. It can provide students with a thorough understanding of what they will learn throughout the curriculum unit. It can be attached to a Material post to provide students with additional information.
