While water is quite essential and yet so scarce, however, people fail to realize this fact. They waste water with little or no care for the results of this activity. There are various ways in which one can avoid wasting water . To begin with, all households must get their leaking taps checked. They should fix them immediately as every drop is precious.

Similarly, we must choose buckets instead of showers for bathing. This is a very debatable topic and it needs to be settled. Showers waste a lot of water, so people must prefer buckets. Though a big portion of the Earth is covered with water, only a small portion of it can be used for various human activities. So we need to be judicious and rational, regarding the usage of water.

Why is water important for our bodies?

Water is important for our body for the following reasons.

Above 70% of our body contains water so it is pivotal for the human race to survive.

Water helps in regulating our body temperature.

Water helps in the digestion of solid food.

It also keeps our skin healthy and hydrated.

Water helps in excreting waste from our body through sweat, urination, and defecation. So replenishing the water in our body is essential to prevent dehydration.

Drinking water also helps in reducing calories and maintaining body weight because it can increase the rate of metabolism.

Water consumption lubricates the joints, spinal cord, and tissues.

Importance of Water

All living organisms, plants, animals, and human beings contain water. Almost 70% of our body is made up of water. Our body gets water from the liquids we drink and the food we eat. Nobody can survive without water for more than a week. All plants will die if they do not get water. This would lead to the death of all the animals that depend on plants for their food. So the existence of life would come to an end.

Role of Water In Life Processes

Water plays an important role in most of the life processes by acting as a solvent. The absorption of food in our body takes place in solution form with water as the solvent. Also, many waste products are excreted in the form of solutions through urine and perspiration.

Water helps in regulating our body temperature. In hot weather, we drink a lot of water. This maintains our body temperature. Also, water evaporates from the surface of our body as sweat. This takes away heat and cools the body.

Water is essential for plants to grow. Plants need water to prepare food. They also absorb dissolved nutrients from the soil through their roots.

Aquatic plants and animals use the nutrients and oxygen dissolved in water for their survival.

Uses of Water In Everyday Life

Water is used for drinking, washing, cooking, bathing, cleaning, in our day-to-day life.

It is used to generate electricity in hydroelectric power stations.

Water is used for irrigating fields and in the manufacture of various products.

Other Uses of Water

Water serves as a means of transportation for goods and people.

It provides a medium for recreational sports such as swimming, boating, and water skiing.

Water is also used to extinguish fires.

Importance of Oceans

Oceans are of immense use to man. They are useful in many ways, directly and indirectly. They not only play a significant role in the climate of adjoining countries but also serve mankind in many ways. They are a storehouse of several resources.

An ocean is a major source of water and forms a major part of the water cycle. Oceans contribute water vapor to the atmosphere and we get the same in the form of precipitation.

The oceans are the biggest storehouse of edible forms of marine food, fish being most important. In addition to food, sea animals provide other products like oil, glue, etc.

Oceans have enormous mineral and chemical wealth. A variety of dissolved salts like sodium chloride (common salt), magnesium chloride, and potassium chloride are found in plenty in the oceans.

Oil and gas are important fuels obtained from oceans.

Importance of Lakes and Rivers

Economic and industrial development

Water storage

Hydroelectric power generation

Agricultural purposes

Modern multipurpose dams

Source of food

Source of minerals

Tourist attractions and health resorts

Rivers provide fresh drinking water

Ports can be built on them as they form good natural harbors

Major Concerns

Although our planet Earth is covered with 71% percent of water and 29% of the land, the fast-growing contamination of water is affecting both humans as well as marine life. The unequal distribution of water on the Earth and its increasing demand due to the increasing population is becoming a concern for all.

Water pollution makes it difficult for marine animals to sustain themselves.

Covering over 71% of Earth’s surface, water is undoubtedly the most precious natural resource that exists on our planet. Without the seemingly invaluable compound comprising Hydrogen and Oxygen, life on Earth would be non-existent.

We are slowly but harming our planet at a very alarming rate.

Characteristics of a Good Essay.

It must be brief: As pointed out earlier, a good essay must be short, and also to the point. So, if students are writing an essay on the importance of water it must only deal with the water, and anything which does not directly serve the purpose must be excluded.

Must cover the whole topic: Though it may seem a little contradicting to the first point, what is meant by covering the whole topic is that the maximum number of aspects dealing with the importance of water must be covered in this essay. For instance, water is important for all living organisms and not just humans, and so the same has to be covered in one or the other way in the essay on the importance of the water.

Must be to the point: The essay must remain true to the central idea of the topic, which is the importance of water in this case. Hence, almost all the sentences written in the essay must serve the main topic in one or another way. And also, writing should not be vague or ambiguous, or illogical.

Human beings should realize how important and precious water is. At the individual level, you can be more responsible and avoid wasting water so that our future generation can make the best use of this natural resource abundantly.

So we must understand the wise utilization of water. It is a scanty but most important resource. So only its proper utilization can make it sufficient.

Water is the source of all activities in our lives. From the olden days, human beings have always tried to live near water bodies. Because those places are fertile for cultivation. A vast desert-like Egypt also survives because of the river Nile. The Ganges in India is not only a water body but one of the most sacred rivers in the world. The most important use of water is in agriculture.

Every plant needs it to grow. If crops do not receive adequate water, then they will be stunted. We use water for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing. A living body needs lots of water intake. Insufficient water intake can result in lots of ailments. Water is beneficial for this medical property. Besides these, all industries need water for producing electricity and running the turbines. Water is the potential of civilization. A civilization operates because of the availability of water

But at present, we are observing the pollution of water bodies. It is dangerous for all living beings to survive if all water sources are contaminated. Polluted water is a threat to the earth. Households, industries, insufficient cleanliness, lack of awareness, all are enough to increase pollution in several degrees. With increased consumption of water, it is being equally polluted. Thus many aquatic plants and animals, humans, other land animals are regularly dying after intaking the dirty water.

This is harming our ecosystem. So we must preserve freshwater. It is important and is available in little amount. Clean water can exhaust at any moment. It is our duty even to preserve the rainwater and use it. Every drop of water means life. A correct utility of it is the best way.

Uses of Water

We have already seen the uses of water in our daily lives, but to understand the importance of water, we must think of a scenario where water becomes scarce. The water essay in English will dive into the different uses of water in various fields, which will help kids know more about water problems due to inadequacy and their consequences.

If you think that only humans require water, you are wrong, as plants and animals also depend on water for many purposes. Just like human beings and all other living beings, plants need water to grow, make food and stay alive. On the other hand, some animals and creatures thrive on water surfaces, and they wouldn’t be able to live without water.

We live in a country where agriculture is the main source of income and food for many families. What do you think will happen if there is no water to cultivate the crops? Just like we won’t get good yields from the farm, we might find it difficult to keep ourselves from starving due to the lack of water. Besides, most industries and factories also require water to run their machines, and it is also a medium of transport for goods and people through the sea. You can also think about the extent of the use of water when a fire breaks out in a building. Thus, it is clear that water is the end of all, and be all of life on Earth.

Concerns about Water Usage

Since water is available to us in plenty, let us see how we misuse it for our needs in this water essay in English. At some point in our lives, we have wasted water; remember when you opened the tap and kept the water running when you were putting soap on your hands or switched on the shower and stood under it for a long time?

Despite the majority of the Earth being covered by water, we must realise that all of it is not safe for consumption. Moreover, polluting the water resources by dumping waste will harm aquatic life. The population is increasing, and so is the water demand. If we conserve water now, we will be saving future generations. To eradicate water contamination completely, stringent legislation needs to be formulated and diligently enforced. Rigorous oversight would promote accountability, potentially deterring individuals and groups from polluting. Each individual should recognize the impact of their daily actions and take steps to contribute to a better world for generations to come.

Real-Life Encounter

My affection for my town has always been heightened by its abundant lakes, rivers, and forests. During one of my walks alongside the river that flowed through my village, I was struck by the unusual hues swirling within the water. The once-familiar crystal-clear blue had been replaced by a murky brown shade, accompanied by a potent, unpleasant odour. Intrigued, I decided to investigate further, descending to the riverbank for a closer look at the source of the peculiar colours and smells. Upon closer inspection, I observed peculiar foam bubbles floating on the water’s surface.

Suddenly, a commotion behind me caught my attention, and I turned to witness a group of people hastening toward the river. Their frantic shouts and vigorous gestures conveyed their panic, prompting me to realize that a grave situation was unfolding. As the group reached the river, they were confronted with the distressing sight of numerous lifeless fish floating on the water’s surface.

Following a comprehensive investigation, it was revealed that a local factory had been releasing toxic chemicals into the river, resulting in extensive pollution and the devastation of the ecosystem. This investigation left me stunned and disheartened, acknowledging the significant effort required to restore the river to its own form.

Google’s ‘A Passage of Water’ Brings NASA’s Water Data to Life

The international Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite, as shown in this illustration

The international Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite, as shown in this illustration, is the first global mission surveying Earth’s surface water. SWOT’s high-resolution data helps scientists measure how Earth’s bodies of water change over time.

This immersive experience leverages satellite data to illustrate how climate change is impacting Earth’s water cycle.

As part of the long-standing partnership between NASA and Google, NASA worked with Google Arts & Culture and artist Yiyun Kang to create an interactive digital experience around global freshwater resources titled “A Passage of Water.” This immersive experience leverages data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment ( GRACE) satellites and new high-resolution data from the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission to illustrate how climate change is impacting Earth’s water cycle.

A digital version of “A Passage of Water” will be released online on Thursday, Nov. 30, ahead of the beginning of the United Nations’ Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP 28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Google also will host a physical installation of the visualization project in the Blue Zone at COP 28.

“NASA is the U.S. space agency that provides end-to-end research about our home planet, and it is our job to inform the world about what we learn,” said Kate Calvin, NASA’s chief scientist and senior climate advisor in Washington. “Highlighting our Earth science data in the installation of ‘A Passage of Water’ is a unique way to share information, in a digestible way, around the important connection between climate change and the Earth’s water cycle.”

For six decades, NASA has been collecting data on Earth’s land, water, air, and climate. This data is used to inform decision-makers on ways to mitigate, adapt and respond to climate change. All of NASA’s Earth science data is available for scientists and the public to access in a variety of ways.

“NASA studies our home planet and its interconnected systems more than any other planet in our universe,” said Karen St. Germain, director of NASA’s Earth Science Division. “‘A Passage of Water’ provides an opportunity to highlight the public availability of SWOT data and other NASA Earth science data to tell meaningful stories, improve awareness, and help everyday people who have to make real decisions in their homes, businesses, and communities.”

A collaboration between NASA and the French space agency CNES (Centre National d’Études Spatiales), SWOT is measuring the height of nearly all water on Earth’s surface, providing one of the most detailed, comprehensive views yet of the planet’s freshwater bodies. SWOT provides insights into how the ocean influences climate change and how a warming world affects lakes, rivers, and reservoirs.

“The detail that SWOT is providing on the world’s oceans and fresh water is game-changing. We’re only just getting started with respect to data from this satellite, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the information takes us,” said Ben Hamlington, a research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.

The Google project also uses data from the GRACE and GRACE Follow-On missions –the former is a joint effort between NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), while the latter is a collaboration between NASA and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). GRACE tracked localized changes to Earth’s mass distribution, caused by phenomena including the movement of water across the planet from 2002 to 2017. GRACE-FO came online in 2018 and is currently in operation.

As with GRACE before it, the GRACE-FO mission monitors changes in ice sheets and glaciers, near-surface and underground water storage, the amount of water in large lakes and rivers, as well as changes in sea level and ocean currents, providing an integrated view of how Earth’s water cycle and energy balance are evolving.

“A Passage of Water” is the most recent digital experience created under NASA’s Space Act Agreement with Google, with resulting content to be made widely available to the public free of charge on Google’s web platforms. This collaboration is part of a six-project agreement series that aims to share NASA’s content with audiences in new and engaging ways.

In Arizona’s deeply conservative La Paz County, the most urgent issue facing many voters is not inflation or illegal immigration. It is the water being pumped from under their feet.

Giant farms have turned Arizona’s remote deserts about 100 miles west of Phoenix as green as fairways — the product of extracting an ocean of groundwater to grow alfalfa for dairy cows. Water experts say the pumping is sinking poor rural towns. The ground in parts of La Paz County has dropped more than five feet during three decades of farming. Pipes and home foundations are cracking. Wells are running dry.

“What’s going to happen if they take all the water?” asked Luis Zavala, 48, who emigrated from Mexico two decades ago to pick cantaloupes, another water-intensive crop that has been mostly replaced by hay for cows. Now, he works at a water and ice business in Salome, population 700, selling five-gallon jugs.

Even as political battles over abortion consume Arizona’s Capitol, Democrats have seized on water as a life-or-death election issue that they hope gives them an opening — however slight — to reach out to rural voters who abandoned the party.

“Water made me attorney general,” said Kris Mayes, a first-term Democrat who campaigned on cracking down on farms in western Arizona. “This is exactly the kind of issue we can win back some of rural America.”

Summers of record-setting heat and drought have raised doubts for many Arizonans about whether the state has enough water to sustain its farms and fast-growing cities.

Luis Zavala, in a long-sleeve top, cap and jeans, stands by a garage storing ice and jugs of water.

Rural residents say they are particularly vulnerable. They have fewer sources of water and less money than big cities like Phoenix for larger reservoirs or new wastewater treatment plants. And they do not have the authority of urban areas to stop unlimited water pumping.

A survey last month by Noble Predictive Insights, a Phoenix pollster, found that 60 percent of voters believed the state is running out of water.

Still, Democrats face suspicion in places like La Paz County, a patchwork of emerald-colored farm valleys and scorched mountain ranges whose mild winters draw retirees in RV’s and van-life vagabonds.

For years, populist “pinto Democrats” — named for the multicolored horse breed — survived in these rural corners of Arizona like cactuses in a hostile desert. They supported gun rights, defense and infrastructure projects that sloshed federal money around their communities, said Tom Zoellner, author of “Rim to River,” a chronicle of Arizona’s history and politics. In 1996, La Paz narrowly supported Bill Clinton’s re-election while Arizona’s biggest urban county, Maricopa, went for his Republican opponent.

But now, La Paz, population 17,000, reflects much of rural America’s transformation into bedrock MAGAland that accelerated with former President Donald J. Trump’s appeal to disaffected white voters. Snowbirds playing billiards at the Cactus Bar wear “Let’s Go Brandon” T-shirts mocking President Biden, and Trump flags flap from the off-road desert buggies that rumble through the mountains.

Mr. Trump gained ground over Democrats in rural places in 2020, winning 65 percent of rural votes compared with 59 percent in 2016, according to the Pew Research Center. La Paz County has gone even deeper red. Even after denying that there was a drought in California and proposing deep cuts to the federal agency that oversees major Western water projects, Mr. Trump won La Paz by 40 points in 2020. Some of his voters scoffed at the idea that the Democrats’ water offensive could make them reconsider their politics.

“Absolutely not,” said Jim Downing, an engineer who works with farms in the area. He accused Democrats and the news media of concocting a water crisis for “purely political” reasons, and said that big farms had been demonized for taking advantage of a legally available resource.

Nevertheless, he joined a crowd of about 150 people at the local library in Wenden, a La Paz farming town, one afternoon in April to hear Ms. Mayes talk about water. The turnout was far higher than the few dozen local officials had been hoping for.

Ms. Mayes has been canvassing the sites of Arizona’s water crises. She has held packed meetings in rural communities where groundwater pumping by a huge dairy farm has opened up fissures in the earth or where people’s 400-foot-deep wells are going dry.

She and other Democrats are talking up ways that money from President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act and the bipartisan infrastructure legislation will fund drought relief projects and lay new pipes . “You have been ignored for far too long,” she told the crowd. “Consider the fact that I’m here and the fact that I agree with you.”

She pointed out that she and Gov. Katie Hobbs, a first-term Democrat, had gone after a Saudi-owned farm in La Paz County soon after taking office last year. Critics said the farm, Fondomonte, had been pumping nearly unlimited amounts of water on land that it leased cheaply from the state to grow alfalfa for export to the Middle East.

Ms. Hobbs canceled Fondomonte’s leases on state land; the company is appealing. In a statement, Fondomonte said it continues to farm on other properties and uses “innovative ways to reduce water consumption.” The company has said it is the third-largest private employer in the countyand generates $145 million annually in economic activity for the state.

Ms. Mayes told the crowd in Wenden that she was investigating whether she could sue to stop the large farms. She argued that the erosion, road damage, falling water tables and other damage created by huge farms could potentially violate Arizona’s nuisance laws .

Holly Irwin, a county supervisor who described herself as a “staunch Republican,” said La Paz had gotten no help under Arizona’s previous administration, led by a Republican.

“It’s a relief,” she said. “We have a governor who’s listening, and paying attention to water.”

Several people who attended the town hall said they disliked the mega-farms, but they reserved their true ire for Phoenix and other fast-growing cities. Urban areas are hunting for new sources of water as drought and climate change threaten the Colorado River’s supply.

Phoenix once owned land in La Paz, but officials said it has sold it all and has no water rights in the area anymore. Buckeye and Queen Creek, two Phoenix suburbs, however, have each spent millions of dollars to buy water from private landowners in rural Arizona to serve their growth.

Ms. Mayes said her office took sides with La Paz and other western Arizona counties that sued to block the water transfer to Queen Creek from a farm along the Colorado.

Rob McDermott, who runs a mobile home park serving snowbirds, said Arizona’s water crisis became a top issue after his 600-foot well went dry two years ago. He spent $120,000 digging a deeper one. He said he supported Democratic officials’ efforts to crack down on large farms and a proposal from Ms. Mayes to temporarily stop new deep-well drilling.

“You’ve got to slow it down,” he said.

But he was also concerned about illegal immigration and fentanyl being smuggled north through Arizona, and said he was likely to vote for Mr. Trump this November.

Other residents said much of the same. Guillermo Palma, 51, a retired teacher and school maintenance worker, arrived in La Paz when his family emigrated from Mexico City four decades ago. He grew up chopping weeds in what were then cotton fields, bought a home and raised a family. The water crisis threatens it all, he said.

“If they deplete it, this town dries up,” he said. “We lose everything.”

He said he agreed with Ms. Mayes “100 percent” when it comes to groundwater, and ranked maintaining the county’s infrastructure as a top priority, but said he would almost certainly vote for Mr. Trump this year. “I’m not a Biden guy,” he said.

The Arizona Democratic Party said it is trying to win back rural voters this year by holding town halls to talk about water, rural jobs and other issues. But several left-leaning voters around La Paz County said they hesitated even to admit that they vote Democratic after Mr. Trump’s 2016 win.

Gloria Ramirez, 75, whose parents moved to Wenden from Chihuahua, Mexico, in the 1960s to work in the fields, said the dropping groundwater levels have her worried for the future of the town.

“My house is lower,” she said. “The ground is splitting.”

A Democrat, she attended the meeting with Ms. Mayes and her conservative neighbors, and plans to vote in November. But like many voters, she said that the political climate had gotten so toxic that she was tuning out election news. She avoids even discussing the politics of water, Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden around town.

Instead, she prefers to string glass and beads into peace-sign art, and spend her weekends camping in the mountains, where the green alfalfa fields end and the desert reclaims the land.

10 years after Flint's lead water crisis began, a lack of urgency stalls 'proper justice'

FLINT, Mich. — Ten years ago, smiling politicians posed for cameras while pushing a button, swapping the main tap water source for this majority-Black, impoverished city to the Flint River — the untreated water that started flowing from residents’ taps would become contaminated when it corroded the pipes.

For years afterward, the city’s water was tainted with lead , a human-made crisis that became emblematic of how poorer communities of color in the United States could fall victim to government mismanagement.

In that time, Michigan started and then stopped providing free bottled water to Flint residents ; criminal charges were brought and then dismissed against several officials for deaths suspected of being linked to the scandal; and a lawsuit was settled with the state in 2021 for $626 million, but residents have yet to receive a dime.

Now, Mayor Sheldon Neeley contends the city’s work to ensure a Flint free from contaminated drinking water is finally on the “last leg” of the process — a promise that comes as families continue to live with lingering adverse health effects and demand ongoing accountability.

People participate in a national mile-long march to highlight the push for clean water in Flint

“We have new infrastructure. We have new state-of-the-art technologies,” he said.

“Residents of this community never again have to worry about drinking from the Flint River water,” Neeley added.

Since the crisis unfolded, almost 30,000 homes and businesses have had their water service lines investigated and replaced, he said. Efforts will resume this week to inspect the lines at almost three dozen more structures, although about 1,900 others have not been reviewed.

A federal judge last month held Flint in contempt of court for missing deadlines related to replacing service lines, writing that “the city has failed to abide by the court’s orders in several respects” and adding that “it has no good reason for its failures.” Meanwhile groups, including the Natural Resources Defense Council, accuse the city of dragging its feet.

Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley.

Neeley said the city has been unable to move forward on those outstanding properties because their owners have not granted access. But activists claim it’s the city that isn’t making the effort to contact them.

“As a resident myself, I’m making sure that we do the things necessary to reach out,” said Neeley, who was elected mayor in 2019 and re-elected in 2022. “Those individuals that said they never received a knock at the door, they can also make an outreach to the city of Flint.”

“We’re working every day,” he added, “and everything doesn’t happen overnight.”

But a decade should be more than enough time, Flint residents argue.

“It’s been the residents, the poisoned people, on the front lines this entire fight,” said Melissa Mays, a social worker and activist. “It’s been exhausting because it’s ongoing.”

‘A historic moment’

On April 25, 2014, then-Mayor Dayne Walling and other officials toasted with glasses of water to celebrate switching from Detroit’s water system to the Flint River, part of a cost-cutting move that was estimated to save the cash-strapped city about $5 million in less than two years.

A lead pipe.

Tapping from the Flint River was meant to be an interim source until Flint could join a new system accessing water from Lake Huron.

“It’s a historic moment for the city of Flint to return to its roots and use our own river as our drinking water supply,” Walling said at the ceremony, marking the switch with the press of a black button.

But in the following weeks, residents complained that the water tasted “weird,” with a murky, foamy appearance as it flowed from the tap.

While the mayor insisted residents who were concerned about the water quality were wasting their money buying bottled water, a boil advisory was eventually issued after the water tested positive for E.coli bacteria. Residents began to protest. The city continued to claim the water was safe, even as a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency manager told the state that the chemistry of the Flint River allowed for contaminants from pipes, including lead, to leach into the water system.

Flint residents hold a bottle full of contaminated water.

In the summer of 2015, Virginia Tech researchers found samples of Flint water had abnormally high lead levels. Exposure to lead can be harmful to children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , potentially causing slowed growth and development, behavioral problems, and brain and nervous system damage.

The fallout in Flint included a federal government investigation, the resignation of then-Gov. Rick Snyder’s environmental chief and the city’s return to using Detroit water. Meanwhile, amid the crisis, Flint also grappled with a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak that led to a dozen deaths and scrutiny over whether the severe form of bacterial pneumonia was connected with the city’s water supply. (A 2019 study prompted by the state of Michigan found the outbreak may be associated with the Flint water emergency but that, regardless, there was an ineffective public health response to the Legionnaires’ cases.)

In 2016, the administration of then-President Barack Obama declared a federal emergency in Flint and freed up millions in water infrastructure aid. By the end of that year, researchers said they found that lead-tainted water was not in most homes.

There is a “great irony” that despite all the attention that Flint brought to lead-contaminated tap water — and the wider issue of environmental justice — the city has not completed the work of installing new service lines, said Erik Olson, senior strategic director for health and food with the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Placards posted above water fountains.

“The local government just keeps making up excuses for why they haven’t solved the problem,” he said. “We need to turn that around and fix the problem now in Flint and take steps to fix the problem nationwide.”

He added: “They’re within fighting distance of finishing the job.”

‘Still suffering’

Mays, the Flint social worker, has been an outspoken critic of the local and state governments’ handling of the water crisis. The realization that some of the children she works with have gone their entire lives being unable or unwilling to drink from the tap is “angering.”

“The fact that it’s been allowed to drag on for a decade while people suffer and pass away — we’ve lost a lot of amazing people,” she said. “It’s inhumane.”

Melissa Mays, an activist in Flint.

Mays said she blames the lead in Flint water for medical and learning challenges her three sons, now 19, 21 and 25, have faced over the past decade, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, anxiety, damage to their kidneys and growth plates, as well as immune system issues.

“We didn’t have discolored water,” she said, “so we just assumed it was safe.”

Mays joined others in her community to protest, and in 2016 became a named plaintiff in a lawsuit accusing Flint of violating the federal Safe Drinking Water Act. A settlement was reached for the city to replace the lead service lines.

Meanwhile, the state’s financial payouts to tens of thousands of Flint residents remain mired in delays.

“We still have yet to have proper justice,” said Mays’ youngest son, Cole Mays, who grew up with a regular routine of getting his lead levels checked.

The Flint River.

His mother added that water woes in recent years in other economically disadvantaged and majority-Black cities, including Newark, New Jersey, and Jackson, Mississippi, indicate a larger problem, but the failures in Flint and the slow-going repairs underscore how her city is “still suffering.”

Within the last decade, “everybody stood up for us and fought for Flint. We need that again because without that external pressure, it’s going to be another 10 years and then another and another,” Mays said, “and it’s terrifying.”

Maggie Vespa and Samira Puskar reported from Flint and Erik Ortiz from New York.
