जिन साधनों का प्रयोग कर बहुत से मानव समूहों तक विचारों, भावनाओं व सूचनाओं को सम्प्रेषित किया जाता है, उन्हें हम जनसंचार माध्यम या मीडिया कहते हैं । मीडिया, ‘मिडियम’ शब्द का बहुवचन रूप है, जिसका अर्थ होता है- माध्यम ।

मीडिया अथात् जनसंचार माध्यम को तीन वर्गों-मुद्रण माध्यम, इलेक्ट्रॉनिक माध्यम एवं नव इलेक्ट्रॉनिक माध्यम में विभाजित किया जा सकता है । मुद्रण माध्यम के अन्तर्गत समाचार-पत्र, पत्रिकाएँ, पैम्फलेट, पोस्टर, जनरल, पुस्तकें इत्यादि आती हैं ।

इलेक्ट्रॉनिक माध्यम के अन्तर्गत रेडियो, टेलीविजन एवं सिनेमा आते हैं । नव इलेक्ट्रॉनिक माध्यम इण्टरनेट है । सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी के इस युग में सूचनाओं तक व्यक्ति की पहुंच में तेजी आने के साथ ही मीडिया के महत्व में भी वृद्धि हुई है ।

मीडिया से किसी-न-किसी रूप में जुड़े रहना आधुनिक मानव की आवश्यकता बनती जा रही है । मोबाइल, रेडियो, टेलीविजन, इण्टरनेट इत्यादि में से किसी-न-किसी माध्यम से व्यक्ति हर समय दुनियाभर की खबरों पर नजर रखना चाहता है ।

उल्लेखनीय है कि समाज के विभिन्न प्रकरणों जैसे- जेसिका लाल हत्याकाण्ड, रुचिका हत्याकाण्ड, निर्भया काण्ड, 2-जी स्पेक्ट्रम प्रकरण, मुजफ्फ़रनगर दंगे आदि को समुचित जानकारी के साथ मीडिया ने समय-समय पर उजागर किया है, जिससे जनता उद्वेलित भी हुई है और सही परिप्रेक्ष्य में उसने वस्तुस्थिति को समझा भी है ।

इन लोकतान्त्रिक भावनाओं की रक्षा करने में मीडिया के ये कार्य उसके लोकतन्त्र का प्रहरी होने के प्रमाण हैं । मीडिया को लोकतन्त्र का चौथा स्तम्भ माना जाता है । लोकतन्त्र के अन्य तीन स्तम्भ हैं- विधायिका, कार्यपालिका एवं न्यायपालिका ।

विधायिका का कार्य कानून का निर्माण करना कार्यपालिका का कार्य उसे लागू करना एवं न्यायपालिका का कार्य कानून का पालन करवाना होता है । इन तीनों स्तम्भों पर निगरानी रखकर लोकतान्त्रिक भावनाओं की रक्षा की जिम्मेदारी मीडिया पर ही होती है । डैन ब्रान ने ठीक ही लिखा है-

“मीडिया अव्यवस्था का उचित हथियार है ।”

आज समाचार-पत्र, पत्रिकाएँ, रेडियो और टेलीविजन विश्वभर में जनसंचार के प्रमुख एवं लोकप्रिय माध्यम बन चुके हैं । इनमें से समाचार-पत्रों व पत्रिकाओं का फैलाव सबसे अधिक है, किन्तु शहर से दूरदराज क्षेत्रों में, जहाँ आज भी बिजली नहीं पहुँची है, रेडियो ही जनसंचार का सर्वाधिक लोकप्रिय माध्यम है ।

शुरू-शुरू में टेलीविजन की लोकप्रियता समाचार, धारावाहिक एवं सिनेमा प्रसारित किए जाने के कारण हुई, पर बाद में कई न्यूज चैनलों की स्थापना के साथ ही यह जनसंचार का एक ऐसा सशक्त माध्यम बन गया, जिसकी पहुँच करोड़ों लोगों तक हो गई ।

अब तीन सौ से अधिक टेलीविजन चैनल चौबीसों घण्टे विभिन्न प्रकार के कार्यक्रम प्रसारित कर रहे हैं । ‘रघुवीर सहाय’ की कविता की इन पंक्तियों से अखबार एवं टेलीविजन पर दी जाने वाली जानकारियों की पुष्टि भी हो जाती है-

”700 मर गए अख़बार कहता है

खण्डहर और लाश दूरदर्शन दिखाता है

बहुत-सी खबरें मेरे अन्दर से आती हैं

सबको चीर कर हहराती”

इण्टरनेट जनसंचार का एक नवीन इलेक्ट्रानिक माध्यम है । इण्टरनेट वह जिन्न है, जो व्यक्ति के सभी हुक्मों की तामील करने को तैयार रहता है । विदेश जाने के लिए हवाई जहाज का टिकट बुक कराना हो, किसी पर्यटन स्थल पर स्थित होटल का कोई कमरा बुक कराना हो, किसी किताब का ऑर्डर देना हो, अपने व्यापार को बढ़ाने के लिए विज्ञापन देना हो, अपने मित्रों से ऑनलाइन चैटिंग करना हो, डॉक्टरों से स्वास्थ्य सम्बन्धी सलाह लेनी हो या वकीलों से कानूनी सलाह लेनी हो, इण्टरनेट हर मर्ज की दवा है ।

नेता हो या अभिनेता, विद्यार्थी हो या शिक्षक, पाठक हो या लेखक, वैज्ञानिक हो या चिन्तक सबके लिए इण्टरनेट उपयोगी साबित हो रहा है । मीडिया की भूमिका किसी भी समाज के लिए महत्वपूर्ण होती है, क्योंकि यह न केवल सूचना के प्रसार का कार्य करता है, बल्कि लोगों को किसी मुद्दे पर अपनी राय कायम करने में भी सहायक होता है ।

पिछले कुछ वर्षों में इलेक्ट्रानिक मीडिया में ग्लैमर और पीत पत्रकारिता में वृद्धि होने के बाद से इसकी लोकप्रियता एवं विश्वसनीयता में कमी तथा समाचार-पत्र की विश्वसनीयता में वृद्धि हुई है ।

हाल ही में 2-जी स्पेक्ट्रम घोटाले में जब प्रिण्ट ही नहीं इलेक्ट्रानिक मीडिया के भी दिग्गज बहती गंगा में हाथ धोते नजर आए, तब कुछ निर्भीक एवं निष्पक्ष समाचार-पत्रों ने पत्रकारिता के अपने धर्म के अन्तर्गत देश को उनकी असलियत बताई ।

‘भारतीय आत्मा’ के रूप में पहचाने जाने वाले स्वतन्त्रता सेनानी, कवि व पत्रकार श्री माखनलाल चतुर्वेदी ने वर्ष 1925 में ‘कर्मवीर’ का पुन: प्रकाशन के दौरान इसके अग्रलेख के अन्तिम वाक्य के रूप में लिखा था- “प्रभु करे सेवा के इस पथ में मुझे अपने दोषों का पता रहे और आडम्बर अभियान और आकर्षण मुझे पथ से भटका न पाए ।”

मीडिया के प्रमुख कार्य हैं- लोकमत का निर्माण, सूचनाओं का प्रसार, भ्रष्टाचार एवं घोटालों का पर्दाफाश तथा समाज की सच्ची तस्वीर प्रस्तुत करना । मीडिया की शक्ति का अनुमान इसी से लगाया जा सकता है कि कई बार जनमत का निर्माण करने में यह महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाता है ।

जनमत के निर्माण के बाद जनक्रान्ति ही नहीं, बल्कि अन्य अनेक प्रकार का परिवर्तन सम्भव है । यहाँ तक कि कमी-कभी सरकार को गिराने में भी ये सफल रहते हैं ।

बिहार में चारा घोटाला, आन्ध्र प्रदेश में डाक टिकट घोटाला, 2-जी स्पेक्ट्रम घोटाला, राष्ट्रमण्डल खेल घोटाला, कोयला घोटाला, मैच फिक्सिंग इत्यादि अनेक प्रकार के घोटालों के पर्दाफाश में मीडिया की भूमिका महत्वपूर्ण रही है ।

मीडिया का प्रभाव आधुनिक समाज पर स्पष्ट देखा जा सकता है । चाहे फैशन का प्रचलन हो या आधुनिक गीत-संगीत का प्रचार-प्रसार इन सबमें मीडिया की भूमिका अहम् होती है । टेलीविजन एवं फिल्म के कलाकार रातों-रात प्रसिद्ध हो जाते हैं ।

यद्यपि भारत में अधिकतर फिल्मों का उद्देश्य मनोरंजन के माध्यम से धन कमाना होता है, किन्तु पिछले कुछ वर्षों में कुछ सार्थक एवं समाजोपयोगी फिल्मों का भी निर्माण हुआ है, जिन्होंने समाज को दशा एवं दिशा प्रदान करने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई है ।

लोगों के रहन-सहन, बोल-चाल, रंग-ढंग सबमें टेलीविजन एवं सिनेमा का स्पष्ट प्रभाव देखने को मिलता है । युवा वर्गों के अतिरिक्त बच्चों एवं महिलाओं पर भी इनका प्रभाव पड़ता है, जो उनके रहन-सहन में झलकने लगता है ।

इस तरह मीडिया आधुनिक समाज को हर प्रकार से प्रभावित कर रहा है । यहाँ तक कि यह संस्कृति को भी प्रभावित करने में पूर्णरुपेण सक्षम होता है । आजकल भारतीय युवा वर्गों में पश्चिमी संस्कृति का प्रभाव इसी के कारण देखने को मिल रहा है ।

इधर कुछ वर्षों से धन देकर समाचार प्रकाशित करवाने एवं व्यावसायिक लाभ के अनुसार समाचारों को प्राथमिकता देने की घटनाओं में भी तेजी से वृद्धि हुई है, फलस्वरूप इनकी विश्वसनीयता पर भी प्रश्न उठने शुरू हो गए हैं ।

इसका कारण यह है कि भारत के अधिकतर समाचार-पत्रों एवं न्यूज चैनलों का स्वामित्व किसी-न-किसी स्थापित उद्यमी घराने के पास है । जनहित एवं देशहित से अधिक इन्हें अपने उद्यमों के हित की चिन्ता रहती है, इसलिए ये अपने हितों को प्राथमिकता देते हैं ।

सरकार एवं विज्ञापनदाताओं का प्रभाव भी समाचार-पत्रों एवं टेलीविजन प्रसारण में देखा जा सकता है । प्रायः समाचार-पत्र अपने विज्ञापनदाताओं के विरुद्ध कुछ छापने से बचते हैं । इस प्रकार की पत्रकारिता किसी भी देश के लिए घातक है ।

पत्रकारिता व्यवसाय से कहीं अधिक सेवा है । व्यावसायिक प्रतिबद्धता पत्रकारिता के मूल्यों को नष्ट करती है । आज पत्रकारिता के माध्यम से आर्थिक हितों को साधने बाले लोग जिम मॉरिसन की इस पंक्ति को गलत अर्थों में प्रयोग कर रहे हैं-

“जनसंचार माध्यम पर नियन्त्रण करना बुद्धि पर नियन्त्रण करना है ।”

मीडिया के माध्यम से लोगों को देश की हर गतिविधियों की जानकारी तो मिलती ही है, साथ ही उनका मनोरंजन भी होता है । किसी भी देश में जनता का मार्गदर्शन करने के लिए निष्पक्ष एवं निर्भीक मीडिया का होना आवश्यक है ।

मीडिया देश की राजनीतिक, सामाजिक, आर्थिक एवं सांस्कृतिक गतिविधियों की सही तस्वीर प्रस्तुत करता है । चुनाव एवं अन्य परिस्थितियों में सामाजिक एवं नैतिक मूल्यों से जनसाधारण को अवगत कराने की जिम्मेदारी भी मीडिया को बहन करनी पड़ती है ।

यह सरकार एवं जनता के बीच एक सेतु का कार्य करता है । जनता की समस्याओं को इस माध्यम से जन-जन तक पहुँचाया जाता है । विभिन्न प्रकार के अपराधों एवं घोटालों का पर्दाफाश कर यह माध्यम देश एवं समाज का भला करता है, इसलिए निष्पक्ष एवं निर्भीक मीडिया के अभाव में स्वस्थ लोकतन्त्र की कल्पना भी नहीं की जा सकती ।

इस तरह यह माध्यम आधुनिक समाज में लोकतन्त्र के प्रहरी का रूप ले चुका है और यही कारण है कि इसे लोकतन्त्र के चतुर्थ स्तम्भ की संज्ञा दी गई है । तभी तो कभी ‘नेपोलियन’ ने कहा था-

“मैं लाखों संगीनों की अपेक्षा तीन विरोधी

समाचार-पत्रों से अधिक डरता हूँ ।”

سوشل میڈیا پرنٹ الیکٹرانک سے بالکل الگ ہے۔ سوشل میڈیا اپنے ذریعے ایک مجازی دنیا بناتا ہے جسے استعمال کرنے والا انسان سوشل میڈیا کے کسی پلیٹ فارم (فیس بک٬ ٹویٹر، انسٹا گرام) وغیرہ کا استعمال کرکے اپنی پہنچ اور پہچان کو بہت آگے بڑھا سکتا ہے۔ آج کے دور میں سوشل میڈیا ہماری زندگی کا ایک اہم حصہ بن گیا ہے۔ یہ ہمیں گھر بیٹھے ہر طرح کی خبریں انٹرنیٹ کے ذریعہ پہنچا دیتا ہے۔ دیکھا جائے تو پہلے کی زندگی کے مقابلے ہماری آج کی زندگی کو اس نے بالکل آسان بنا دیا ہے۔اور یہ صرف باہری ضروری خبروں کے لیے ہی نہیں، بلکہ انسان کے وقت کو گزارنے کے لیے بھی بہت اچھا ہے۔

سوشل میڈیا کے ذریعے آج انسان آن لائن نوکری ڈھونڈ سکتا ہے اور گھر بیٹھے آن لائن کام کر سکتا ہے۔سوشل میڈیا کے ہماری زندگی میں بہت فائدے ہیں۔ مگر کچھ لوگوں نے اس کے غلط استعمال سے اس کو غلط ثابت کر دیا ہے۔ جس طرح سے فلموں کی ریلیزنگ کی خبریں اور اس کے علاوہ بہت سی چھوٹی چھوٹی خبریں سوشل میڈیا کے ذریعہ دکھایا جا سکتا ہے اسی طرح سے سوشل میڈیا پر غلط خبریں غلط افواہ بھی دکھائی جا سکتی ہیں۔ اور کچھ غلط لوگ اس کا فائدہ اٹھا کر ملک کے لوگوں میں نفرت ڈالنے کی کوشش کرنے لگتے ہیں جس کا انجام برا ہوتا ہے۔ اس لیے ہر انسان کو سوشل میڈیا کا صحیح استعمال کرنا چاہیے۔

سوشل میڈیا کے فائدے

• (1) سوشل میڈیا کے ذریعے لوگ ایک دوسرے سے دور ہوتے ہوئے بھی بات کر سکتے ہیں اور ویڈیو گرافکس کے ذریعے ایک دوسرے کو دیکھ سکتے ہیں۔
• (2) اس کے ذریعے وہ خبریں جاننے کو ملتی ہیں جو جلدی نیوز کے ذریعے نہیں مل پاتیں۔
• (3) گوگل کے ذریعے ہم ہر سوال کا جواب ڈھونڈ سکتے ہیں۔
• (4) سوشل میڈیا کا استعمال ہر انسان کر سکتا ہے چاہے وہ کم پڑھا لکھا بھی ہو۔
• (5) سوشل میڈیا کے ذریعے انسان فوٹو٬ ویڈیو اور ہر طرح کی خبریں کہیں بھی بھیج سکتا ہے۔

سوشل میڈیا کے نقصانات

• (1) اسکول کے بچوں کا وقت اس میں ضائع ہوتا ہے جس کی وجہ سے امتحان میں نمبر کم آتے ہیں۔
• (2) دشمنی نبھانے کے لیے لوگ فوٹو اور ویڈیو کو اسکین کرکے غلط تصویریں بنا کر پوری دنیا میں پھیلا دیتے ہیں۔
• (3) غلط خبریں پھیلتی ہیں جس کی وجہ سے شہر میں دنگے فسادات ہوتے ہیں۔
• (4) آنکھوں پر بہت زیادہ اثر پڑتا ہے اس کے زیادہ استعمال سے آنکھیں خراب بھی ہو سکتی ہیں۔
• (5) اور سب سے زیادہ بےحیائی کا سبب سوشل میڈیا ہی بن رہا ہے۔ لڑکے لڑکیاں ناجائز محبت کا اظہار خیال اس کے ذریعے ہی کرتے ہیں۔

मीडिया को भारत के लोकतंत्र का चौथा स्तंभ कहा जाता है और मीडिया ही वह शक्ति है जो संसद, विधायिकी कार्यपालिका तथा न्यायपालिका के द्वारा जो भूल चूक की जाती है उसे लोगों के सामने लाने का प्रयास करती है और लोकतंत्र की सुरक्षा में महत्वपूर्ण किरदार अदा करती है।

विभिन्न प्रकार के बड़े-बड़े घोटाले को उजागर करने में मीडिया काफी अहम किरदार निभाती है और जनता को सच के साथ वाकिफ कराती है। 

गवर्नमेंट के द्वारा जो भी योजना चलाई जाती है उन्हें जनता तक पहुंचाने के लिए मीडिया एक अहम कड़ी साबित होती है क्योंकि मीडिया ही बार बार उन खबरों के बारे में जनता को बताने का काम करती है जिससे जनता को यह पता चलता है कि गवर्नमेंट के द्वारा उनके फायदे के लिए कौन सी योजना चलाई गई है।

मीडिया के टोटल दो प्रकार है इसमें पहला प्रकार है प्रिंट मीडिया और दूसरा है इलेक्ट्रॉनिक मीडिया। प्रिंट मीडिया के अंतर्गत समाचार, साप्ताहिक, मासिक, त्रैमासिक, पाक्षिक, पत्र और पत्रिकाएं आते हैं साथ ही दैनिक पत्रिका भी प्रिंट मीडिया के अंतर्गत आती है।

प्रिंट मीडिया के अंतर्गत खबरें हमें अखबारों के द्वारा या फिर किसी कागज पर लिखे गए माध्यम के द्वारा प्राप्त होती है, वही इलेक्ट्रॉनिक मीडिया के अंतर्गत खबरें हमें टीवी पर या फिर रेडियो पर सुनाई अथवा दिखाई जाती है।

प्रिंट मीडिया को आगे बढ़ाने में अमर उजाला, दैनिक जागरण, हरिभूमि, संदेश, दिव्यभास्कर, दिव्य गुजरात जैसे अखबारों का महत्वपूर्ण योगदान है।

वर्तमान के समय में प्रिंट मीडिया की जगह पर इलेक्ट्रॉनिक मीडिया काफी कामयाब रहा है क्योंकि इलेक्ट्रॉनिक मीडिया दुनिया भर में घटित होने वाली घटनाओं की तुरंत ही जानकारी प्रदान करती है, वही प्रिंट मीडिया के द्वारा हमें घटना घटित हो जाने के अगले दिन उस घटना की जानकारी प्राप्त होती है।

इसलिए लोग इलेक्ट्रॉनिक मीडिया को ज्यादा देखते हैं। इलेक्ट्रॉनिक मीडिया के अंतर्गत हमारे भारत देश में कुछ लोकप्रिय चैनल है जिसे लोग देखना पसंद करते हैं। जैसे कि ज़ी न्यूज़, स्टार न्यूज़, एबीपी लाइव, आज तक, रिपब्लिक भारत टीवी, इंडिया टीवी, न्यूज़ नेशन, दूरदर्शन इत्यादि।

मीडिया के द्वारा ही हमें बिजनेस, सामाजिक जीवन, मनोरंजन इत्यादि के बारे में विभिन्न प्रकार की खबरें प्राप्त करने का मौका मिलता है। इसके अलावा देश और दुनिया में घटित होने वाली घटनाओं की जानकारी भी हमें मीडिया ही देती है,

साथ ही लोगों तक सरकारी योजनाओं की जानकारी पहुंचे, इसके लिए भी मीडिया प्रयासरत रहती है। मीडिया हर मुद्दे से संबंधित महत्वपूर्ण कवरेज करती है और सच को उजागर करने का काम करती है

प्रस्तावना –  जनतंत्र  में मीडिया का महत्वपूर्ण स्थान हैं. मीडिया को लोकतंत्र का प्रहरी तथा चौथा स्तम्भ  माना  जाता हैं. संसद, विधायिका कार्यपालिका तथा न्यायपालिका द्वारा हुई चूक को सामने लाकर वह लोकतंत्र की सुरक्षा में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान देता हैं. मीडिया के कारण ही अनेक घोटाले उजागर होते है तथा जनता के अधिकारों की रक्षा होती हैं.

मीडिया का स्वरूप – मीडिया पत्रकारिता को कहते हैं. यधपि पत्रकारिता शब्द समाचार पत्रों से सम्बन्धित हैं किन्तु आज उसका व्यापक रूप मीडिया ही हैं.

मीडिया के दो रूप हैं. एक मुद्रित या प्रिंट मिडिया तथा दूसरा इलेक्ट्रॉनिक मिडिया. मुद्रित मिडिया के अंतर्गत दैनिक समाचार पत्र, साप्ताहिक, पाक्षिक, मासिक त्रैमासिक पत्र पत्रिकाएँ आदि आते हैं.

इनमें  समाचारों के अतिरिक्त विभिन्न घटनाओं और सामाजिक, साहित्यिक , सांस्कृतिक, धार्मिक, राजनैतिक इत्यादि विषयों के   बारे में  प्रकाशित   किया जाता हैं.

टेलीविजन, रेडियो, इंटरनेट आदि इलेक्ट्रानिक मीडिया के अंतर्गत ही आते हैं. आज इलेक्ट्रानिक मीडिया का प्रभाव तथा प्रसार बढने के कारण मुद्रित पत्रकारिता पिछड़ गयी हैं किन्तु उसकी आवश्यकता कम नहीं हुई हैं.

समाचार पत्रों का विकास – समाचार पत्र शब्द आज पूरी तरह से लाक्षणिक हो गया हैं. अब समाचार पत्र केवल समाचारों से पूर्ण पत्र नहीं रह गया है बल्कि यह साहित्य, राजनीति, धर्म, विज्ञानं आदि विविध विधाओं को भी अपनी कलेवर सीमा में सम्भाले चल रहा हैं.

किन्तु वर्तमान स्वरूप में आते आते समाचार पत्र ने एक लम्बी यात्रा तय की हैं. भारत में अंग्रेजी शासन के साथ समाचार पत्र का आगमन हुआ. इसके विकास और प्रसार में ईसाई मिशनरियों, ईश्वरचंद्र विधासागर और राजा राममोहन राय का योगदान महत्वपूर्ण रहा.

प्रचलित पत्र पत्रिकाएँ तथा चैनल – देश के स्वतंत्र होने के पश्चात समाचार पत्रों का तीव्रता से विकास हुआ और आज कल अनेक अखिल भारतीय एवं क्षेत्रीय समाचार पत्र प्रकाशित हो रहे हैं.

हिंदी भाषा में प्रकाशित होने नवभारत टाइम्स हिंदुस्तान जनसत्ता पंजाब केसरी, नवजीवन, जनयुग, राजस्थान पत्रिका, अमर उजाला, भारत, आज, दैनिक जागरण, दैनिक भास्कर आदि हैं. तथा अंग्रेजी में प्रकाशित टाइम्स ऑफ़ इंडिया इंडियन एक्सप्रेस हिंदुस्तान टाइम्स नार्दन इंडिया स्टेट्समैन आदि हैं. इसके  आलावा  अनेक साप्ताहिक पाक्षिक एवं मासिक पत्रिकाएँ भी प्रकाशित हो रही हैं.

इलेक्ट्रानिक मीडिया का भी खूब प्रचार हुआ हैं. दूरदर्शन के विकास में आज तक, जी न्यूज, सहारा, स्टार, सेट मेक्स इत्यादि अनेक देशी विदेशी चैनलों ने अपनी भूमिका अदा की हैं.

समाचार पत्र मीडिया का एक प्रमुख अंग हैं. दूरदर्शन और रेडियो के रहते हुए भी समाचार पत्रों की व्यापकता और विश्वसनीयता बराबर बनी हुई हैं.

मीडिया का महत्व – जीवन के हर क्षेत्र के लिए आज मीडिया महत्वपूर्ण बन गया हैं. जनमत को प्रभावित करने और राजनीतिक जागरूकता बढ़ाने में उसकी भूमिका सराहनीय हैं.

व्यापारिक गतिविधियों को प्रकट करना,  ग्राहक को सचेत करना,  धार्मिक और सांस्कृतिक गतिविधियों पर चर्चा करना, सामाजिक परिवर्तनों पर सही दृष्टिकोण रखना, और मनोरंजन समुचित स्थान देना तथा नवीनतम वैज्ञानिक प्रगति को प्रकाश में लाना आदि अनेक ऐसे कार्य हैं जिन्होंने मीडिया को जीवन का महत्व पूर्ण अंग बना दिया हैं.

मीडिया का दायित्व – मीडिया के जीवनव्यापी महत्व को देखते हुए उससे कुछ दायित्वों के निर्वहन की आशा भी की जाती हैं. उससे यह भी अपेक्षा हैं कि वह विश्व शान्ति और विश्व बन्धुता की भावना को प्रोत्साहित करे.

उपसंहार – पत्रकारिता को एक गौरवशाली आजीविका माना गया हैं. अतः क्षुद्र लाभों से और भयादोहन से मुक्त रहकर उसे सामाजिक नेतृत्व की महती भूमिका निभानी चाहिए. मीडिया की स्वतन्त्रता प्रजातंत्र की सुरक्षा का आधार हैं. अतः जनता और शासन दोनों को इसका सम्मान करना चाहिए.

वह अपना ज्यादा से ज्यादा टाइम सोशल मीडिया पर व्यतीत करते हैं। जब से लोग सोशल मीडिया का प्रयोग काफी ज्यादा करने लगे हैं तब से लोगों में बीमारियाँ भी काफी बढ़ने लगी है। लोग सोशल मीडिया एक जगह बैठ कर चलाते हैं।

वह कहीं आने-जाने अथवा टहलने, एक्सरसाइज , खेलने, कूदने आदि की वजह से उनके अंदर कई बीमारियाँ आ जाती हैं। इससे लोगों की आँखों पर भी काफी नुकसान होता है और उनकी बुद्धि में भी काफी फर्क पड़ता है।

सोशल मीडिया के जरिए कई लोग साइबर क्राइम करते हैं। जैसे कि लोग किसी का पासवर्ड चुरा लेते हैं, उससे उनकी पर्सनल जानकारी ले लेते हैं या फिर उनके मोबाइल की फोटोस और वीडियो को चुरा लेते हैं।

इसमें लोगों को बेवकूफ बना दिया जाता है कई लोगों के पास सोशल मीडिया की अच्छी तरीके से जानकारी नहीं होती है। वह किसी दूसरे के झाँसे में आ जाते हैं, जिससे उनका सारा पैसा उनके खाते से निकाल दिया जाता है।

The basic structure of an essay always consists of an introduction , a body , and a conclusion . But for many students, the most difficult part of structuring an essay is deciding how to organize information within the body.

There are two main things to keep in mind when working on your essay structure: making sure to include the right information in each part, and deciding how you’ll organize the information within the body.

Parts of an essay

The three parts that make up all essays are described in the table below.

Order of information

You’ll also have to consider how to present information within the body. There are a few general principles that can guide you here.

The first is that your argument should move from the simplest claim to the most complex . The body of a good argumentative essay often begins with simple and widely accepted claims, and then moves towards more complex and contentious ones.

For example, you might begin by describing a generally accepted philosophical concept, and then apply it to a new topic. The grounding in the general concept will allow the reader to understand your unique application of it.

The second principle is that background information should appear towards the beginning of your essay . General background is presented in the introduction. If you have additional background to present, this information will usually come at the start of the body.

The third principle is that everything in your essay should be relevant to the thesis . Ask yourself whether each piece of information advances your argument or provides necessary background. And make sure that the text clearly expresses each piece of information’s relevance.

The sections below present several organizational templates for essays: the chronological approach, the compare-and-contrast approach, and the problems-methods-solutions approach.

The chronological approach (sometimes called the cause-and-effect approach) is probably the simplest way to structure an essay. It just means discussing events in the order in which they occurred, discussing how they are related (i.e. the cause and effect involved) as you go.

A chronological approach can be useful when your essay is about a series of events. Don’t rule out other approaches, though—even when the chronological approach is the obvious one, you might be able to bring out more with a different structure.

Essays with two or more main subjects are often structured around comparing and contrasting . For example, a literary analysis essay might compare two different texts, and an argumentative essay might compare the strengths of different arguments.

There are two main ways of structuring a compare-and-contrast essay: the alternating method, and the block method.

Alternating

In the alternating method, each paragraph compares your subjects in terms of a specific point of comparison. These points of comparison are therefore what defines each paragraph.

In the block method, each subject is covered all in one go, potentially across multiple paragraphs. For example, you might write two paragraphs about your first subject and then two about your second subject, making comparisons back to the first.

• Advantages: Flexibility, accessibility
• Disadvantages: Discomfort, challenges for those with poor internet or tech literacy

• Disadvantages: Difficulty of identifying struggling students and aiding them unobtrusively, lack of personal interaction among students
• Advantages: More accessible to those with low tech literacy, equality of all sharing one learning environment
• Disadvantages: Students must live close enough to attend, commutes may vary, classrooms not always accessible for disabled students
• Advantages: Ease of picking up on signs a student is struggling, more personal interaction among students
• Disadvantages: May be harder for students to approach teacher privately in person to raise issues

An essay that concerns a specific problem (practical or theoretical) may be structured according to the problems-methods-solutions approach.

This is just what it sounds like: You define the problem, characterize a method or theory that may solve it, and finally analyze the problem, using this method or theory to arrive at a solution. If the problem is theoretical, the solution might be the analysis you present in the essay itself; otherwise, you might just present a proposed solution.

• It would require significant organization and investment, but would equip people to judge news sources more effectively

Signposting means guiding the reader through your essay with language that describes or hints at the structure of what follows.  It can help you clarify your structure for yourself as well as helping your reader follow your ideas.

The essay overview

In longer essays whose body is split into multiple named sections, the introduction often ends with an overview of the rest of the essay. This gives a brief description of the main idea or argument of each section.

The overview allows the reader to immediately understand what will be covered in the essay and in what order. Though it describes what  comes later in the text, it is generally written in the present tense . The following example is from a literary analysis essay on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein .

Transitions

Transition words and phrases are used throughout all good essays to link together different ideas. They help guide the reader through your text, and an essay that uses them effectively will be much easier to follow.

Various different relationships can be expressed by transition words, as shown in this example.

Because Hitler failed to respond to the British ultimatum, France and the UK declared war on Germany. Although it was an outcome the Allies had hoped to avoid, they were prepared to back up their ultimatum in order to combat the existential threat posed by the Third Reich.

Transition sentences may be included to transition between different paragraphs or sections of an essay. A good transition sentence moves the reader on to the next topic while indicating how it relates to the previous one.

… Distance learning, then, seems to improve accessibility in some ways while representing a step backwards in others.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The structure of the body is flexible, but you should always spend some time thinking about how you can organize your essay to best serve your ideas.

An essay isn’t just a loose collection of facts and ideas. Instead, it should be centered on an overarching argument (summarized in your thesis statement ) that every part of the essay relates to.

The way you structure your essay is crucial to presenting your argument coherently. A well-structured essay helps your reader follow the logic of your ideas and understand your overall point.

Comparisons in essays are generally structured in one of two ways:

• The alternating method, where you compare your subjects side by side according to one specific aspect at a time.
• The block method, where you cover each subject separately in its entirety.

It’s also possible to combine both methods, for example by writing a full paragraph on each of your topics and then a final paragraph contrasting the two according to a specific metric.

You should try to follow your outline as you write your essay . However, if your ideas change or it becomes clear that your structure could be better, it’s okay to depart from your essay outline . Just make sure you know why you’re doing so.

NPR defends its journalism after senior editor says it has lost the public's trust

NPR is defending its journalism and integrity after a senior editor wrote an essay accusing it of losing the public's trust.

NPR's top news executive defended its journalism and its commitment to reflecting a diverse array of views on Tuesday after a senior NPR editor wrote a broad critique of how the network has covered some of the most important stories of the age.

"An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don't have an audience that reflects America," writes Uri Berliner.

A strategic emphasis on diversity and inclusion on the basis of race, ethnicity and sexual orientation, promoted by NPR's former CEO, John Lansing, has fed "the absence of viewpoint diversity," Berliner writes.

NPR's chief news executive, Edith Chapin, wrote in a memo to staff Tuesday afternoon that she and the news leadership team strongly reject Berliner's assessment.

"We're proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories," she wrote. "We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world."

NPR names tech executive Katherine Maher to lead in turbulent era

She added, "None of our work is above scrutiny or critique. We must have vigorous discussions in the newsroom about how we serve the public as a whole."

A spokesperson for NPR said Chapin, who also serves as the network's chief content officer, would have no further comment.

Praised by NPR's critics

Berliner is a senior editor on NPR's Business Desk. (Disclosure: I, too, am part of the Business Desk, and Berliner has edited many of my past stories. He did not see any version of this article or participate in its preparation before it was posted publicly.)

Berliner's essay , titled "I've Been at NPR for 25 years. Here's How We Lost America's Trust," was published by The Free Press, a website that has welcomed journalists who have concluded that mainstream news outlets have become reflexively liberal.

Berliner writes that as a Subaru-driving, Sarah Lawrence College graduate who "was raised by a lesbian peace activist mother ," he fits the mold of a loyal NPR fan.

Yet Berliner says NPR's news coverage has fallen short on some of the most controversial stories of recent years, from the question of whether former President Donald Trump colluded with Russia in the 2016 election, to the origins of the virus that causes COVID-19, to the significance and provenance of emails leaked from a laptop owned by Hunter Biden weeks before the 2020 election. In addition, he blasted NPR's coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

On each of these stories, Berliner asserts, NPR has suffered from groupthink due to too little diversity of viewpoints in the newsroom.

The essay ricocheted Tuesday around conservative media , with some labeling Berliner a whistleblower . Others picked it up on social media, including Elon Musk, who has lambasted NPR for leaving his social media site, X. (Musk emailed another NPR reporter a link to Berliner's article with a gibe that the reporter was a "quisling" — a World War II reference to someone who collaborates with the enemy.)

When asked for further comment late Tuesday, Berliner declined, saying the essay spoke for itself.

The arguments he raises — and counters — have percolated across U.S. newsrooms in recent years. The #MeToo sexual harassment scandals of 2016 and 2017 forced newsrooms to listen to and heed more junior colleagues. The social justice movement prompted by the killing of George Floyd in 2020 inspired a reckoning in many places. Newsroom leaders often appeared to stand on shaky ground.

Leaders at many newsrooms, including top editors at The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times , lost their jobs. Legendary Washington Post Executive Editor Martin Baron wrote in his memoir that he feared his bonds with the staff were "frayed beyond repair," especially over the degree of self-expression his journalists expected to exert on social media, before he decided to step down in early 2021.

Since then, Baron and others — including leaders of some of these newsrooms — have suggested that the pendulum has swung too far.

New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger warned last year against journalists embracing a stance of what he calls "one-side-ism": "where journalists are demonstrating that they're on the side of the righteous."

"I really think that that can create blind spots and echo chambers," he said.

Internal arguments at The Times over the strength of its reporting on accusations that Hamas engaged in sexual assaults as part of a strategy for its Oct. 7 attack on Israel erupted publicly . The paper conducted an investigation to determine the source of a leak over a planned episode of the paper's podcast The Daily on the subject, which months later has not been released. The newsroom guild accused the paper of "targeted interrogation" of journalists of Middle Eastern descent.

Heated pushback in NPR's newsroom

Given Berliner's account of private conversations, several NPR journalists question whether they can now trust him with unguarded assessments about stories in real time. Others express frustration that he had not sought out comment in advance of publication. Berliner acknowledged to me that for this story, he did not seek NPR's approval to publish the piece, nor did he give the network advance notice.

Some of Berliner's NPR colleagues are responding heatedly. Fernando Alfonso, a senior supervising editor for digital news, wrote that he wholeheartedly rejected Berliner's critique of the coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict, for which NPR's journalists, like their peers, periodically put themselves at risk.

Alfonso also took issue with Berliner's concern over the focus on diversity at NPR.

"As a person of color who has often worked in newsrooms with little to no people who look like me, the efforts NPR has made to diversify its workforce and its sources are unique and appropriate given the news industry's long-standing lack of diversity," Alfonso says. "These efforts should be celebrated and not denigrated as Uri has done."

After this story was first published, Berliner contested Alfonso's characterization, saying his criticism of NPR is about the lack of diversity of viewpoints, not its diversity itself.

"I never criticized NPR's priority of achieving a more diverse workforce in terms of race, ethnicity and sexual orientation. I have not 'denigrated' NPR's newsroom diversity goals," Berliner said. "That's wrong."

Questions of diversity

Under former CEO John Lansing, NPR made increasing diversity, both of its staff and its audience, its "North Star" mission. Berliner says in the essay that NPR failed to consider broader diversity of viewpoint, noting, "In D.C., where NPR is headquartered and many of us live, I found 87 registered Democrats working in editorial positions and zero Republicans."

Berliner cited audience estimates that suggested a concurrent falloff in listening by Republicans. (The number of people listening to NPR broadcasts and terrestrial radio broadly has declined since the start of the pandemic.)

Former NPR vice president for news and ombudsman Jeffrey Dvorkin tweeted , "I know Uri. He's not wrong."

Others questioned Berliner's logic. "This probably gets causality somewhat backward," tweeted Semafor Washington editor Jordan Weissmann . "I'd guess that a lot of NPR listeners who voted for [Mitt] Romney have changed how they identify politically."

Similarly, Nieman Lab founder Joshua Benton suggested the rise of Trump alienated many NPR-appreciating Republicans from the GOP.

In recent years, NPR has greatly enhanced the percentage of people of color in its workforce and its executive ranks. Four out of 10 staffers are people of color; nearly half of NPR's leadership team identifies as Black, Asian or Latino.

"The philosophy is: Do you want to serve all of America and make sure it sounds like all of America, or not?" Lansing, who stepped down last month, says in response to Berliner's piece. "I'd welcome the argument against that."

"On radio, we were really lagging in our representation of an audience that makes us look like what America looks like today," Lansing says. The U.S. looks and sounds a lot different than it did in 1971, when NPR's first show was broadcast, Lansing says.

A network spokesperson says new NPR CEO Katherine Maher supports Chapin and her response to Berliner's critique.

The spokesperson says that Maher "believes that it's a healthy thing for a public service newsroom to engage in rigorous consideration of the needs of our audiences, including where we serve our mission well and where we can serve it better."

A veteran National Public Radio journalist slammed the left-leaning broadcaster for ignoring the Hunter Biden laptop scandal because it could have helped Donald Trump get re-elected.

Uri Berliner, an award-winning business editor and reporter at NPR, penned a lengthy essay in Bari Weiss’ online news site The Free Press in which he called out his bosses for turning the public radio broadcaster into “an openly polemical news outlet serving a niche audience.”

“The laptop was newsworthy,” Berliner wrote. “But the timeless journalistic instinct of following a hot story lead was being squelched.”

Weeks before the 2020 presidential election, The Post was the first to reveal the existence of the laptop that Hunter Biden left at a Delaware computer shop.

The Post published the contents of emails taken from the laptop, which shed light on Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine and China while his father, Joe Biden, was vice president during the Obama administration.

Initially, national security experts and former intelligence officials declared the laptop a hoax and was the product of a Russian disinformation campaign.

Social media sites like Twitter even barred its users from sharing links to The Post’s reporting.

The authenticity of the emails were later confirmed by independent experts and federal law enforcement officials .

According to Berliner, NPR’s managing editor for news at the time said that the outlet had no interesting in “[wast[ing] our time on stories that are not really stories, and we don’t want to waste the listeners’ and readers’ time on stories that are just pure distractions.”

Berliner wrote in The Free Press that a well-respected colleague at NPR said they were glad the network wasn’t covering the story because it would help Trump win re-election. He did not name the journalist.

After the contents of the laptop proved to be authentic, NPR “could have fessed up to our misjudgment,” Berliner wrote.

“But, like Russia collusion [allegations against Trump that were debunked], we didn’t make the hard choice of transparency.”

NPR’s Edith Chapin, the acting Chief Content Officer, defended the organization in a memo to staff.

“I and my colleagues on the leadership team strongly disagree with Uri’s assessment of the quality of our journalism and the integrity of our newsroom processes,” she said.

“With all this said, none of our work is above scrutiny or critique.”

Berliner also took NPR to task for its coverage of the Russia collusion saga — which was fueled by allegations that the Trump campaign was in cahoots with the Kremlin during the 2016 presidential campaign.

He said that NPR “hitched our wagon to Trump’s most visible antagonist” — Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.).

“By my count, NRP hosts interviewed Schiff 25 times about Trump and Russia,” according to Berliner, who said he “eagerly voted against Trump twice but felt we were obliged to cover him fairly.”

When Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating the Trump-Russia collusion allegations, found no credible evidence to support the charge, “NPR’s coverage was notably sparse,” Berliner wrote.

“It is one thing to swing and miss on a major story,” Berliner wrote, adding: “What’s worse is to pretend it never happened, to move on with no mea culpas, no self-reflection.”

Berliner also called out NPR for pushing other left-leaning causes, such as subjecting staffers to “unconscious bias training sessions” in the wake of the May 2020 death of George Floyd.

Employees were ordered to “start talking about race,” he said.

NPR journalists were also told to “keep up to date with current language and style guidance from journalism affinity groups” that were based on racial and ethnic identity, including “Marginalized Genders and Intersex People of Color” (MGIPOC); “NPR Noir” (black employees at NPR); and “Women, Gender-Expansive, and Transgender People in Technology Throughout Public Media.”

According to Berliner, if an NPR journalist’s language “differs from the diktats of those groups,” then a “DEI Accountability Committee” would settle the dispute.
