Telangana Bathukamma festival essay – speech in English

Bathukamma is a colourful floral festival of Telangana and is celebrated by womenfolk with exotic flowers of the region. The festival has over the years became a symbol of Telangana culture and identity. Bathukamma comes during the latter half of monsoon, before the onset of winter.

The monsoon rains usually bring plenty of water into the ponds, tanks of Telangana and it is also the time when wild flowers bloom in various vibrant colours across the uncultivated and barren plains of the region. The most abundant of these flowers are ‘gunuka’ (or ‘gunugu’) and ‘tangedu’. There are other flowers like the ‘banti’, ‘chamanti’, ‘nandi-vardhanam’ etc.

The ‘shilpakka pandlu’ (or ‘sitaphalalu’), custard apples, are another great attraction during this season. The custard apple is tasty fruit that grows in the wild with little or no water and is often called the ‘poor man’s apple’. Then there is corn (‘jonna’ and ‘mokka jonna’) waiting to be harvested.

Amidst these, Bathukamma is celebrated by the womenfolk of Telangana, heralding the beauty of vibrant nature in multitudinous flowers.

The festival begins a week before the ‘Saddula Bathukamma’ (the grand finale of the Bathukamma festival) which falls two days before Dassera. The womenfolk normally get back to their parents’homes from their in-laws and breathe the fresh air of freedom to celebrate the colours of flowers.

For one whole week, they make small ‘Bathukammas’, play around them every evening and immerse them in a nearby water pond. On the last day, menfolk of the house go into the wild plains and gather the flowers like ‘gunuka’ and ‘tangedu’. They bring home bagfuls of these flowers and the entire household sits down to arrange them in stacks.

The flowers are carefully arranged row after row in a brass plate (called ‘taambalam’) in circular rows and in alternate colours. The Bathukamma grows in size and the bigger it gets the better. The white ‘gunuka’ flowers are coloured using water paints and Bathukamma gets colourful circular layers of them along with ‘tangedu’ in between. The Bathukamma is then placed before the family deity and prayers are offered.

As evening approaches the womenfolk dress colorfully in best of their attire and adorn lot of ornaments and place the Batukamma in their courtyard. The women of neighborhood also gather in a large circle around it. They start singing songs by making rounds around them repeatedly, building a beautiful human circle of unity, love, sisterhood.

After playing in circles around the ‘Batukammalu’, before the onset of dusk, the womenfolk carry them on their heads and move as a procession towards a bigger water body near the village or town. The procession is extremely glittering with aptly dressed and decorated women and ‘Bathukammalu’. Songs of folklore are sung in chorus throughout the procession and the streets resonate with them.

Finally, when they reach the water pond the ‘Bathukammalu’ are slowly immersed into water after another round of playing and singing. Then they share the ‘maleeda’ (a dessert made with sugar or raw sugar and corn bread) sweets amongst the family members and neighborhood folks. They return to their homes with empty ‘taambaalam’ singing songs in praise of Bathukamma. The songs of Bathukamma echo in the streets until late night during the entire week.

Bathukamma is a celebration of the inherent relationship human beings share with earth and water. During the entire preceding week, women make ‘boddemma’ (a deity of Gowri ‘mother Durga’ made with earthly mud) along with Bathukamma and immerse it in the pond. This helps reinforce the ponds and helps it retain more water.

The flowers used in Bathukamma have a great quality of purifying water in ponds and tanks and flowers so immersed in abundance are environment friendly.

In times when the fresh water ponds are gradually diminishing and dwindling away, it is indeed a matter of pride for Telangana that its womenfolk (with mostly agrarian background) inherently know how to rejuvenate them by celebrating the festival of flowers.

The festival heralds the beauty of nature, collective spirit of Telangana people, the indomitable spirit of womenfolk and also the ecological spirit of the agrarian people in preserving the natural resources in a festive way.

          ఆశ్వయుజ శుద్ధ పాడ్యమి నుండి తొమ్మిది రోజులు జరుపుకునే పుష్పవల్లుల పండుగ "బతుకమ్మ పండుగ". తెలంగాణ రాష్ట్ర పండుగగా 2014 June 16 న బతుకమ్మ పండుగను తెలంగాణ ప్రభుత్వం ప్రకటించింది.

         బతుకమ్మ పండుగకు సంబంధించి చాలా కథలు ప్రచారంలో ఉన్నాయి. మార్కండేయ పురాణం గాథా సప్తశతి లోని ఒక కథ ప్రకారం, మహిషాసురున్ని సంహరించి బాగా అలసిపోయిన గౌరీదేవి ఆశ్వయుజ శుద్ధ పాడ్యమి రోజున నిద్రించి, దశమి నాడు మేల్కొంటుంది. గౌరీ మాత లేవగానే అప్పటికే ప్రాణాలు కోల్పోయిన రాక్షస పీడితులందరు గౌరీ దేవి దయ వల్ల తిరిగి బ్రతుకుతారు. అప్పటినుండి తొమ్మిదిరోజులు గౌరీ దేవిని పూలతో అలంకరించి బతుకమ్మ పేరుతో పూజించటం సంప్రదాయంగా మారింది.

         ఇలా ప్రచారంలో ఉన్న ఇంకొక కథ ప్రకారం, "ఒక బాలిక" భూస్వాముల అఘాయిత్యాలను భరించలేక ఆత్మహత్య చేసుకుంటుంది. ఆ బాలిక గుర్తుగా ఆ గ్రామస్తులు "బతుకమ్మ" పేరుతో ఉత్సవం జరపటం జరుగుతూ వస్తుంది.

బతుకమ్మను పేర్చడం

         గుమ్మడి పూవులు + గుమ్మడి ఆకును ఇత్తడి స్తాంబాలంలో క్రింది వరుసలో ఉంచుతారు. వాటిపైన గునుగు పూలు, చామంతి పూలు, బంతిపూలు వరుసలో పేరుస్తారు. పైన పసుపు ముద్దతో గౌరమ్మను చేసి దీపం పెట్టి పూజిస్తారు.

         ఇలా తయారు చేసిన బతుకమ్మను సాయంకాలం ఆరుబయట ఉంచి, చుట్టూ మహిళలు, అమ్మాయిలు చప్పట్లు కొడుతూ, తిరుగుతూ, జానపదాలు పాడుతూ పరవశిస్తారు.

         సద్దుల బతుకమ్మ రోజు చీకటిపడిన తర్వాత బతుకమ్మలను తలపై పెట్టుకొని ఊరిలో ఉన్న చెరువులో నిమజ్జనం చేస్తారు. చక్కర, జొన్నరొట్టెతో చేసిన మలిద ముద్దలను ప్రసాదంగా స్వీకరిస్తారు.

ఈ పండుగ జరిపే తొమ్మిది రోజులను తొమ్మిది పేర్లతో పిలుస్తారు.

1. మొదటి రోజు / ఎంగిలిపూల బతుకమ్మ:

         పెత్తరమాస నాడు దీన్ని జరుపుకుంటారు, ఈ రోజు పెద్దలకు పూజించి బ్రాహ్మణులకు బియ్యం మరియు కూరగాయలు దానం చేస్తారు.

ముందురోజే పూలను కోసి తెస్తారు కాబట్టి ఈ రోజు బతుకమ్మను ఎంగిలిపూల బతుకమ్మ అని అంటారు. సాయంత్రం బతుకమ్మను చేసి మధ్యలో గౌరమ్మను ఉంచి, జానపదాలను పాడుతూ, ఆడుతూ మహిళలు బతుకమ్మను పూజిస్తారు, ఈ రోజు నువ్వులు+నూకలు+బెల్లం కలిపి ప్రసాదంగా పెడతారు.

2. రెండవ రోజు / అటుకుల బతుకమ్మ:

         ఈ రోజు బతుకమ్మను పేర్చి, సప్పటి పప్పు+బెల్లం+అటుకులు కలిపి ప్రసాదంగా ఉంచుతారు.

3. మూడవ రోజు / ముద్దపప్పు బతుకమ్మ:

         ఈ రోజు బతుకమ్మను పేర్చి, ఈ రోజు బెల్లం+పాలు ప్రసాదంగా ఉంచుతారు.

4. నాలుగవ రోజు / నానబియ్యం బతుకమ్మ:

         ఈ రోజు బతుకమ్మను పేర్చి, మానేసిన బియ్యం+బెల్లం ముద్దలుగా చేసి ప్రసాదంగా పెడతారు.

5. ఐదవ రోజు / అట్ల బతుకమ్మ:

         ఈ రోజు బతుకమ్మను పేర్చి, అట్లు లేదా దోశలు ప్రసాదంగా పెడతారు.

6. ఆరవ రోజు / అలిగిన బతుకమ్మ:

         ఈ రోజు బతుకమ్మ ఆడరు, మరియు ప్రసాదం ఉండదు కాబట్టి అలిగిన బతుకమ్మ అని అంటారు.

7. ఏడవ రోజు / వేపకాయల బతుకమ్మ:

भारत देश में अनेक धर्म और जाति के लोग होते है, जो अपने संस्कृति के हिसाब से त्यौहार मानते है अथवा मानते है।उन्हीं में से एक है बतुकम्मा। बतुकम्मा त्यौहार को बठुकम्मा भी कहा जाता है। यह तेलंगाना का एक क्षेत्रीय त्यौहार है, जो नीचे वर्ग की महिलाओं द्वारा मनाया जाता है। यह त्योहार पूरे तेलंगाना राज्य में 9 दिन तक मनाया जाता है। इसे फूलों का त्योहार भी कहा जाता है। इस पूजा में अनेक प्रकार और रंग के फूलों का इस्तेमाल किया जाता है। बतुकम्मा त्यौहार यह की संस्कृति और पारंपरिक भावनाओ को दर्शाता है।

इस त्योहार में स्त्री को मान्यता दिया गया है तथा ये स्त्री के सम्मान में मनाया जाने वाला त्यौहार है। इस दिन महिलाएं फूलों के सात परत बनाकर उसमें गोपुरम मंदिर की आकृति बनती है और उसकी पूजा करती है। यह पूजा महालय अमावस्या में मनाया जाता है। और नवरात्रि के अष्टमी में खत्म होता है। बतुकम्मा सितंबर और अक्टूबर के महीने में आता है। हजारों साल पुराना इस त्योहार में मां पार्वती की पूजा की जाती है। हमारे भारत देश में कई सारे ऐसे त्योहार है जो हमारी संस्कृति को दिखाती है, बतुकमा भी उन्हीं में से एक है।

यह त्योहार तेलंगाना में मनाया जाता हैं। यह त्यौहार तेलंगाना की पिछड़े वर्ग की महिलाओं के द्वारा उत्साह पूर्वक हर्षोल्लास के साथ मनाया जाता हैं। इसमें कई तरह के फूलों का उपयोग किया जाता हैं। इसलिए इसे रंगों का रीजनल त्यौहार कहा जाता हैं। पूरे तेलंगाना क्षेत्र में भठुकम्मा का त्यौहार 9 दिनों तक मनाया जाता हैं। यह त्यौहार तेलंगाना की संस्कृति व सभ्यता को दर्शाता हैं।

इस फूलों के त्यौहार में फूलों से कई प्रकार की अलग-अलग आकृतियां बनाई जाती हैं। इस में उपयोग किए जाने वाले फुल आयुर्वेदिक दृष्टि से भी उपयोगी होते हैं। फूलों से सात परत के गोपुरम मंदिर का निर्माण किया जाता हैं। तेलुगु में बतुकम्मा का मतलब होता हैं की देवी मां जिंदा हैं। इस दिन बतुकम्मा को माता गौरी के रूप में पूजा जाता हैं। यह त्योहार स्त्री के सम्मान के लिए मनाया जाता हैं।

बतुकम्मा त्यौहार कब मनाया जाता है

हिंदू पंचांग के अनुसार बतुकम्मा पर्व श्राद्ध पक्ष, भादो की अमावस्या जिसे महालय की अमस्या भी कहा जाता हैं। यह इस दिन से प्रारंभ होता हैं और नवरात्रि की अष्टमी के दिन यहां समाप्त होता हैं। ग्रेगोरियन कैलेंडर के अनुसार भठुकम्मा सितंबर -अक्टूबर में मनाया जाता हैं। तेलंगाना में कहा जाता है, कि यहां मानसून के अंत में शुरू होकर शीत ऋतु की प्रारंभ तक मनाया जाता हैं।

बतुकम्मा त्यौहार हजार साल पुराना हैं। इस पर्व मैं सलोसिया, शैन्ना, मेरीगोल्ड, कमल, कुकुमिस पतियों का उपयोग करके विभिन्न प्रकार की आकृतियां बनाई जाती हैं।

बतुकम्मा त्यौहार की कहानी

बठुकम्मा त्योहार का इतिहास- वेमुल्लावाड़ा चालुक्य राजा राष्ट्रकुट राजा के उप -सामंत थे। चोल राजा और राष्ट्रकुट के बीज हुए युद्ध में चालुक्य राजा ने राष्ट्रकुट का साथ दिया। 973 ई. मे राष्ट्रकूट राजा के उप -सामंत थेलापुद्धू द्वितीय ने आखिरी राजा खुर्द द्वितीय हरा दिया और अपना आजाद कल्याणी चालुक्य राज्य का निर्माण किया।

वर्तमान का तेलंगाना राज्य यही राज्य हैं। वैमुलावाडा के साम्राज्य के समय राजा राजेश्वर का मंदिर बहुत ज्यादा प्रसिद्ध था। तेलंगाना के लोग इनकी बहुत ज्यादा पूजा आराधना करते थे। चोल के राजा परान्ताका सुंदरा राष्ट्रकूट के राजा के साथ युद्ध से घबरा गए थे। तब किसी ने बोला राजा राजेश्वर उनकी मदद कर सकते हैं।

राजा चोल राजा राजेश्वरी के भक्त बन गए उन्होंने अपने बेटे का नाम राजा राजा रखा। राजा राजा ने 985 से 1014 ई. तक राज्य किया। उनके बेटे राजेंद्र चोल जो उनके सेनापति थे सत्यासय ने हमला करके उसको जीत लिया और राजेश्वर जी का मंदिर तुडवा दिया। एक बड़ी शिवलिंग उपहार के तौर पर अपने पिता को भेंट की।

1006 ई. राजा राजा चोला ने इस शिवलिंग के लिए बड़े मंदिर का निर्माण करवाया। 1010 में ब्रिहदेश्वरा नाम से मंदिर की स्थापना होती हैं। वेमुलावाड़ा से शिवलिंग को तन्जवुरु मैं स्थापित कर दिया गया। जिससे कि तेलंगाना के लोग बहुत दुखी हुए। तेलंगाना छोड़ने के बाद पार्वती के दुख को कम करने के लिए बतुकम्मा की शुरुआत हुई। जिसमें फूलों से एक बड़ी पर्वत की आकृति बनाई जाती हैं। इसके ऊपर सबसे पहले हल्दी से गौरम्मा बनाकर रखा जाता हैं। इस दौरान नाच गाना होता हैं। शिव के पार्वती को खुश करने के लिए यह त्यौहार हजार साल से मनाया जा रहा हैं। तेलंगाना में बड़ी धूमधाम और हर्षोल्लास के साथ मनाया जाता हैं।

इस पर्व के पीछे खास उद्देश्य हैं। वर्षा ऋतु में सभी जगह पानी आ जाता हैं जैसे तालाब ,कुएं,नदिया आदि सभी पानी से भर जाते हैं। पृथ्वी भी गीली सी हो जाती हैं और फूल खिलने लगते हैं। फूलों के कारण प्रकृति में बाहर आती हैं इसलिए प्रकृति को धन्यवाद करने के लिए तरह-तरह के फूलों के साथ इस त्यौहार को मनाया जाता हैं। इस दिन वहां के सांस्कृतिक लोक गीत गाए जाते हैं। यह त्यौहार बहुत ही ज्यादा हर्षोल्लास के साथ मनाया जाता हैं।

How do I get started?

Look for the prompts on whatever application you’re using to apply to schools (almost all of the time – with a few notable exceptions – this is the Common Application). If one of them calls out to you, awesome! You can jump right in and start to brainstorm. If none of them are giving you the right vibes, don’t worry. They’re so broad that almost anything you write can fit into one of the prompts after you’re done. Working backwards like this is totally fine and can be really useful!

What if I have writer's block?

You aren’t alone. Staring at a blank Google Doc and thinking about how this is the one chance to tell an admissions officer your story can make you freeze. Thinking about some of these questions might help you find the right topic:

  • What is something about you that people have pointed out as distinctive?
  • If you had to pick three words to describe yourself, what would they be? What are things you’ve done that demonstrate these qualities?
  • What’s something about you that has changed over your years in high school? How or why did it change?
  • What’s something you like most about yourself?
  • What’s something you love so much that you lose track of the rest of the world while you do it?

If you’re still stuck on a topic, ask your family members, friends, or other trusted adults: what’s something they always think about when they think about you? What’s something they think you should be proud of? They might help you find something about yourself that you wouldn’t have surfaced on your own.  

How do I grab my reader's attention?

It’s no secret that admissions officers are reading dozens – and sometimes hundreds – of essays every day. That can feel like a lot of pressure to stand out. But if you try to write the most unique essay in the world, it might end up seeming forced if it’s not genuinely you. So, what’s there to do? Our advice: start your essay with a story. Tell the reader about something you’ve done, complete with sensory details, and maybe even dialogue. Then, in the second paragraph, back up and tell us why this story is important and what it tells them about you and the theme of the essay.

THE WORD LIMIT IS SO LIMITING. HOW DO I TELL A COLLEGE MY WHOLE LIFE STORY IN 650 WORDS?

Don’t! Don’t try to tell an admissions officer about everything you’ve loved and done since you were a child. Instead, pick one or two things about yourself that you’re hoping to get across and stick to those. They’ll see the rest on the activities section of your application.

If you can’t think of another way to end the essay, talk about how the qualities you’ve discussed in your essays have prepared you for college. Try to wrap up with a sentence that refers back to the story you told in your first paragraph, if you took that route.

YES, proofread the essay, and have a trusted adult proofread it as well. Know that any suggestions they give you are coming from a good place, but make sure they aren’t writing your essay for you or putting it into their own voice. Admissions officers want to hear the voice of you, the applicant. Before you submit your essay anywhere, our number one advice is to read it out loud to yourself. I Don’t Write Like Alice Munro, but I Want to Live Like Her

It is common to say “I was heartbroken to hear” that so-and-so died, but I really do feel heartbroken having learned about Alice Munro, who died on Monday.

As a writer, she modeled, in her life and art, that one must work with emotional sincerity and precision and concentration and depth — not on every kind of writing but on only one kind, the kind closest to one’s heart.

She has long been a North Star for many writers and was someone I have always felt guided by. We are very different writers, but I have kept her in mind, daily and for decades, as an example to follow (but failed to follow to the extent that she demonstrated it): that a fiction writer isn’t someone for hire.

A fiction writer isn’t someone who can write anything — movies, articles, obits! She isn’t a person in service to the magazines, to the newspapers, to the publishers or even to her audience. She doesn’t have to speak on the political issues of the day or on matters of importance to the culture right now but ought first and most to attend seriously to her task, which is her only task, writing the particular thing she was most suited to write.

Ms. Munro only ever wrote short stories — not novels, though she must have been pressured to. She died in a small town not too far from where she was born, choosing to remain close to the sort of people she grew up with, whom she remained ever curious about. Depth is wherever one stands, she showed us, convincingly.

Fiction writers are people, supposedly, who have things to say; they must, because they are so good with words. So people are always asking them: Can you say something about this or about this? But the art of hearing the voice of a fictional person or sensing a fictional world or working for years on some unfathomable creation is, in fact, the opposite of saying something with the opinionated and knowledgeable part of one’s mind. It is rather the humble craft of putting your opinions and ego aside and letting something be said through you.

Ms. Munro held to this division and never let the vanity that can come with being good with words persuade her to put her words just everywhere, in every possible way. Here was the best example in the world — in Canada, my own land — of someone who seemed to abide by classical artistic values in her choices as a person and in her choices on the page. I felt quietly reassured knowing that a hundred kilometers down the road was Alice Munro.

She was also an example of how a writer should be in public: modest, unpretentious, funny, generous and kind. I learned the lesson of generosity from her early. When I was 20 and was just starting to publish short stories, I sent her a fan letter. I don’t remember what my letter said. After a few months, I received a handwritten thank-you note from her in the mail. The fact that she replied at all and did so with such care taught me a lot about grace and consideration and has remained as a warmth within me since that day.

She will always remain for me, and for many others, a model of that grave yet joyous dedication to art — a dedication that inevitably informs the most important choices the artist makes about how to support that life. Probably Ms. Munro would laugh at this; no one knows the compromises another makes, especially when that person is as private as she was and transforms her trials into fiction. Yet whatever the truth of her daily existence, she still shines as a symbol of artistic purity and care.

I am grateful for all she gave to the world and for all the sacrifices she must have made to give it. I’m sorry to be here defying her example, but she was just too loved, and these words just came. Thank you, Alice Munro.
