This article was updated on July 22 to reflect the addition of alternate winners and their decisions.

Fourteen MIT undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni have been awarded Fulbright fellowships to pursue projects overseas in the 2022-23 grant year. Two other MIT affiliates were offered awards but declined them to pursue other opportunities.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers grants in over 150 countries for independent research, graduate study, and English teaching. MIT students and alumni interested in applying should contact Julia Mongo in Distinguished Fellowships in Career Advising and Professional Development.

Zachary Alfaro ’21 graduated with double majors in political science and finance. Growing up in Edinburg, Texas, along the U.S.-Mexico border, he always dreamed of seeing the world. At the University of São Paulo, he will conduct research on the supply chains of pirarucu, açai, Brazil nuts, and cocoa, in order to develop strong, sustainable supply chains to bring wealth and prosperity to producers in the Amazon rainforest. At MIT, Alfaro co-founded the MIT Political Review, was a member of the MIT Bhangra team, and taught internationally in Italy and also in Jerusalem through the Middle East Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow. Before traveling to Brazil, Alfaro will spend six months in Mexico City working with the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness.

Caleb Amanfu ’21 graduated with double majors in architecture and engineering. As the recipient of the Delft University of Technology’s Industrial Design Engineering Award, Amanfu is eager to journey to the Netherlands to pursue a master’s degree in integrated product design. He is currently an instructor for MIT’s class 2.00b (Toy Product Design) and is enjoying being involved in both teaching and learning in the world of design. He also enjoys video creation and is excited to explore the Netherlands himself as well as through his camera lens. After Fulbright, Amanfu intends to continue his pursuit of knowledge in the field of product design and other creative endeavors.

Julia Caravias will graduate this spring with a major in computer science, economics, and data science and minors in sustainability and statistics. At the Technical University of Munich in Germany, Caravias will conduct research on optimization models to study the efficient allocation of electric vehicle charging stations. At MIT, Caravias pursued her interest in using computational models to inform sustainable development through her research at the Environmental Solutions Initiative and D-Lab. She was also a member of the varsity women's volleyball team, Terrascope, and Alpha Phi sorority.

Prosser Cathey is a junior studying mathematical economics, political science, and management who will graduate this May. He grew up in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, where his parents instilled in him the importance of serving his community. This led to his interest in economics and climate change, the focus of his Fulbright research in Germany. In Munich, Cathey will study whether working a green job affects one’s support for public policies to combat climate change. Previously, he interned in the White House for the Council of Economic Advisors, was a Burchard Scholar and Pressman Award recipient, and was a member of MIT’s D1 Heavyweight Crew Team, where he won a gold medal at Head of the Charles. Cathey is also the co-founder of a nonprofit that has been recognized by Schmidt Futures and the founder of a startup backed by Y Combinator.

Kylie Yui Dan is a senior majoring in physics with minors in astronomy and Japanese. She has been passionate about studying the universe since childhood. Her Fulbright fellowship will take her to Japan, where she will study galaxies at Hiroshima University. As half-Japanese, Dan hopes that this experience will help her connect more with her family and culture. Outside of research, Dan has spent her time tutoring children of all ages, running a mentorship program between physics undergrad and graduate students at MIT, and helping to plan Tsukimi and Hanami, MIT's semesterly Japanese festivals. After her time in Japan, Dan will head to University of Maryland, where she will start a PhD in astrophysics.

An Jimenez ’21 earned a BS in computation and cognition from MIT in February 2021 and completes her MEng degree with the MIT Human Cooperation Lab this spring. A recipient of the Fulbright Chile Science Initiative award, Jimenez will collaborate with the Center for Experimental Social Sciences at the University of Santiago to understand public attitudes toward the Covid-19 vaccine using machine learning techniques. Beyond research, Jimenez has instructed over 100 students for MIT’s flagship technical communication course for electrical engineering and computer science students; taught science and engineering courses to over 400 students in Jordan, Chile, and South Africa through MIT’s Global Teaching Labs; and biked across the country with MIT Spokes. Between graduation and the Fulbright fellowship, Jimenez will work at a tech impact startup in Amsterdam.

Kevin Lujan Lee  is a PhD candidate in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning. In Aotearoa/New Zealand, he will study how Pasifika-serving community organizations produce the boundaries of Indigeneity, race, and ethnicity within which low-wage Pasifika workers navigate the institutions of labor market regulation. This will comprise one-half of his broader dissertation project — a comparative study of Indigenous Pacific Islanders and low-wage work in 21st-century empires. His research is only made possible by activists in the U.S. immigrant labor movement and global LANDBACK movement, who envision a world beyond labor precarity and Indigenous dispossession. Lee hopes to pursue an academic career to support the work of these movements. Lee won a Fulbright New Zealand award last year but had to reapply to the competition when his grant was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Delanie J. Linden is a PhD candidate in art history in the Department of Architecture at MIT. For her Fulbright year in Paris, France, she will be hosted by the École Normale Supérieure, where she will conduct research on colorant commerce and chemistry in late-18th and early-19th century France under the guidance of Professor of Art History Charlotte Guichard. In Linden's MIT dissertation, “Other Colors: Chroma, Chemistry, and the Orient in Nineteenth-Century French Painting,” chaired by Professor Kristel Smentek, Linden examines French Orientalist painters’ experimentation with brightly contrasting hues. As she argues, artistic chromatic exploration paralleled vast innovations in colorant chemistry in Europe from circa 1780 to 1858, which were fundamentally tethered — and indebted to — colorant technologies and artistic color juxtaposition in China, India, and the Ottoman Empire.

Ana McIntosh will graduate this month from the master of architecture program. Her architectural thesis focused on thinking about ecological and disaster resilience where water's edge and city meet. Growing up with strong ties to Latin America, McIntosh feels uniquely positioned to explore architectural and urban questions in the context of different histories and cultures. For her Fulbright grant in Porto Alegre, Brazil, she will research design for the activation of public space while supporting the city’s urban initiatives in response to climate change. She will be hosted by the University of Rio Grande do Sul’s Urban Technology Center and hopes that her research might help to inform decision-making for public spaces at the policy level.

Karna Morey is a senior majoring in physics and minoring in Spanish. For his Fulbright grant in Barcelona, Spain, Morey will research stellar streams using data collected from the European Space Agency’s GAIA satellite. He hopes to contribute to greater understanding of the galactic properties of the Milky Way. As a trained classical guitarist, he also looks forward to exploring Spain’s musical traditions. At MIT, Morey has contributed to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives as co-chair of the Physics Values Committee, and he has served as advocacy chair of the MIT Society of Physics Students. Morey was awarded the Goldwater Scholarship in his junior year. After Fulbright, he plans on pursuing a PhD in astrophysics.

Aashini Shah is a senior majoring in mechanical and electrical engineering with a focus on medical technology. She is the recipient of the sole Fulbright Singapore award and will conduct research at the National University of Singapore on novel health-sensing devices. As an undergraduate, Shah’s research projects have spanned mobile health-care delivery, controls for a lower limb prosthesis, and a sensing platform for augmenting at-home rehabilitation exercises. She enjoys learning about international public health systems and technologies, and has interned in South Africa and Australia. Shah is excited to bring these global perspectives with her when she enters the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology PhD program in Fall 2023.

Nailah Smith is a senior double-majoring in electrical engineering/computer science and creative writing. She will head to Colombia as a Fulbright English teaching assistant. Passionate about community and education, Smith has worked with the Office of Engineering Outreach Programs to teach high schoolers computer science and robotics. She has also been a residential facilitator for Interphase EDGE/x, helping students improve their communication and writing skills, and through MISTI has participated in a radio electronics project to help students in South Africa get more involved in STEM. She was selected as a Burchard Scholar and received an MIT Women’s and Gender Studies writing prize for her prose. In Colombia, Smith is looking forward to facilitating writing workshops for her students, improving her Spanish skills, exploring the country’s rich biodiversity, and immersing herself in Afro-Colombian culture.

Natasha Stamler is a senior double-majoring in mechanical engineering and planning. As a Netherland-America Foundation-Fulbright grantee, Stamler will be analyzing the energy-efficient Atlas building at TU Eindhoven. Stamler’s research at MIT has focused on sustainability in the built environment, including optimizing the shape of concrete ceilings to reduce energy usage in buildings with the Digital Structures group. She has also worked on projects with NASA to study the overlapping risks posed by climate change and Covid-19 in New York City, design a greenhouse for Mars, and prototype a communications tower for the moon. After her Fulbright in the Netherlands, Stamler will return to MIT for graduate school.

Daniel Zhang is a senior majoring in biology and minoring in comparative media studies. At the Princess Maxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in Utrecht, Netherlands, Zhang will develop an organoid co-culture system to study malignant rhabdoid tumors, and in turn, use this platform to screen for new therapeutic vulnerabilities of the disease. At MIT, he has worked as an undergraduate researcher in Professor Tyler Jacks’ lab since his first year, developing CRISPR-Cas9 mediated gene knockout models for colorectal cancer. Outside of research, he has been actively involved in numerous educational STEM outreach programs, including dynaMIT, Global Teaching Labs, and Future African Scientist, and plans to continue this outreach while abroad in the Netherlands. After Fulbright, Zhang hopes to attend an MD/PhD program with the goal of translating his research findings from bench to bedside.

How to apply

The application period to apply for this grant is between September 15 and December 1 for applicants who intend to start their program in the next academic year.

E.g. if you intend to start a program in the academic year of 2024-2025, you will need to apply for a grant between September 15 and December 1, 2023.

Every applicant needs to complete an online application in English by noon (Central European Time) on December 1 including the required documents. No papers should be mailed to our office and it is not required for applicants to contact us before starting their application. Incomplete applications will not be considered for an award. When creating an online account to start a new application, preferably use a personal email address instead of a temporary work or school address.

When filling out the initial fields of the online application in the ‘Preliminary Questions’ section, applicants MUST select ‘European Union (Schuman)’ as the Program Country. This indicates that you are applying for a Fulbright Schuman award and ensures that your application is sent to our office and not to a different Fulbright Commission. We strongly encourage you to send us an email after submitting your application to make sure that our office has received your application for the Fulbright Schuman Program.

There are no requirements for particular fields of study, however, the proposed research project must be relevant to Europe, the European Union, and/or US-EU relations. The program has funded research projects in political science, law, and economics but also in linguistics, social sciences, public health, arts, etc.

Candidates are responsible for arranging affiliation with a host institution on their own. EU professionals and professionals in training (e.g., decision-makers, policy-makers, individuals in industry, media, politics, academia, and public administration) are encouraged to apply. The most competitive applicants for Fulbright awards demonstrate ambassadorial qualities and a genuine interest in cultural exchange. It is important for candidates to be able to articulate a clear, creative, and feasible plan for their time in the United States and to explain why right now is the right time to pursue this plan and how their grant will ultimately help them achieve their personal and professional goals in the future. The Commission is looking for candidates who will have a multiplier effect within their U.S. and European communities and who wish to ultimately return to the European Union to share their newfound knowledge and experience after their grant has ended.

Mera

John Carroll University graduating Senior Melina Mera ’24 has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright scholarship for the English Teaching Assistantship in Spain for the 2024-2025 academic year. Mera, a Psychology major from Wooster, Ohio, will teach English to students in the Rioja Region of Spain for her Fulbright placement.

Mera says she’s proud to have earned a Fulbright and looks forward to connecting with students abroad.

I feel so fortunate to have had such a supportive committee, consisting of Dr. Chai, Dr. Canda, Ed Mish, and Dr. Nemiroff, to help me throughout the application process. I’m so excited to grow personally and professionally through my year abroad.

JCU’s Fulbright Advisor and Chair of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Dr. Yuh-Cherng Chai, says Mera's determination led to earning the scholarship. “Melina's journey at JCU represents an inspiring story of our students' quality and achievements. Her selection for the Fulbright scholarship not only highlights her outstanding abilities but also reflects positively on our institution,” he says. "This accomplishment can serve as a compelling narrative for prospective students and parents interested in the quality of education and opportunities offered at JCU."

Mera, whose father’s side of her family is from Ecuador, has been actively involved with several organizations during her four years at John Carroll. The Arrupe Scholar served as President of the Latin American Student Association (LASA), an immigration intern for Campus Ministry, and a Residence Assistant for the Office of Residence Life.

Mera’s involvement in the Arrupe program has been transformative, fueling her passion for servant leadership and social justice. Her senior project, a pen-pal program for the Northeast Reintegration Center (NERC) in Cleveland, Ohio, is a testament to her dedication. The Bridge Beyond Bars initiative pairs JCU students with soon-to-be-reintegrated inmates. The program aims to facilitate a smoother transition back into society through shared experiences and correspondence.

Following her Fulbright teaching assistantship in Spain, Mera will head to Los Angeles to pursue her passion for social justice. She’s taking a year of service through the St. Joseph Worker Program, working with Homeboy Industries, a gang rehabilitation and re-entry program. Mera secured her Homeboy position before learning she also earned a Fulbright and could postpone her internship for a year while in Spain.

Mera plans to enroll in graduate school after her two postgraduate internships. She’s set on earning a master's degree in social work, which will prepare her for a career as a licensed, social worker.

JCU students interested in the Fulbright program, please contact Dr. Yuh-Cherng Chai at [email protected] for the application details.

TA Lydia Socorro Alvarez receives Fulbright U.S. Student award for 2024-2025

Lydia Soccoro Alvarez

The Department of Latina/Latino Studies is pleased to announce that Lydia Socorro Alvarez has received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award to serve as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Spain for the 2024-2025 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Alvarez is a TA for LLS 100: Intro to Latina/Latino Studies and an LLS undergraduate alumna. She is a second-year graduate student in the College of Education.

Alvarez will be among the more than 2,000 Fulbright U.S. students—recent college graduates, graduate students, and early career professionals from all backgrounds—who pursue graduate study, conduct research, or teach English in schools abroad each year. Fulbrighters form ongoing research collaborations and lay the groundwork for future partnerships between institutions. The University of Illinois was recently recognized as one of the top producers of U.S. student awards.

“This special opportunity with Fulbright will further aid me in my goal of connecting with different communities of Spanish speaking students all over the world,” Alvarez said. While abroad, I am hopeful that I will help decolonize students’ mindsets of lack and fear and replace it with love. I am so excited to gain a new world perspective to serve university students again upon my return.”

Fulbright is a program of the U.S. Department of State, with funding provided by the U.S. Government. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations, and foundations around the world also provide direct and indirect support to the Program, which has operated in over 160 countries worldwide.

Trio from Earlham selected for prestigious Fulbright scholarships

Three Earlham College seniors have been selected for prestigious Fulbright scholarships for the 2024-25 academic year.

Meg Lyczak and Diana Guzman Rivera have been awarded Fulbright English Language Teaching Assistantships to Colombia and Mexico, respectively. Mary Jo Easley received the Fulbright Graduate Studies Award. The scholarship supports Easley’s enrollment in the University of Toronto-Mississauga’s master’s degree program in sustainability management.

The trio add to Earlham’s proud legacy of producing outstanding global ambassadors that meet the purpose of the Fulbright program, the flagship cultural exchange program from the United States government. Since 1991, 42 Earlhamites have been selected for scholarships from Fulbright’s U.S. Student Program.

“Year after year, Fulbright sees exceptional promise in Earlham students,” said Elana Passman, Earlham associate professor of history and Fulbright liaison. “What a joy and inspiration to work closely with such talented, introspective, and engaged students.

Two other seniors, Andrew Guerard-Adie, an ancient and classical studies major, and Jacob Munday, a Spanish and Hispanic studies major, were both semi-finalists for Fulbrights to Greece and Spain, respectively.

Lyczak’s Fulbright journey began more than four years ago at La 72, a migrant shelter 20 miles north of the Guatemala-Mexico border. She had been working as a hospital liaison helping migrants navigate Mexico’s rural healthcare system.

“I got the job because I was the only volunteer who could drive the manual transmission beat-up truck the shelter owned,” Lyczak said. “I drove down paved and dirt roads daily to bring our guests to the hospital. My passengers came from many different countries with various medical needs. Some were in crisis. Others were seeking routine care.”

The job didn’t just transform Lyczak’s worldview. It also encouraged her to enroll in college five years after graduating from high school in New Hampshire.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do after school high,” she said. “I worked as a farmer, teacher, and backpacking trip leader. I followed my interests and passions and was open to all the places where learning can happen, but the most impactful work was with migrants.

“Navigating the rural Mexican healthcare system and helping our guests in incredibly vulnerable and scary moments has been my greatest lessons in the importance of understanding the complexities of culture.”

At Earlham, Lyczak majored in peace and global studies. She also enrolled in the College’s Border Studies program, a semester-long program based in Tucson, Arizona, where students travel to communities on both sides of the U.S. and Mexico border. Students learn from community members and organizations as well in engage in service to support grassroots efforts in central and southern Mexico, El Paso, Texas, and throughout the Arizona/Sonora borderlands.

“As a Peace and Global Studies major, Meg moves easily between theoretical frameworks and the active work of making justice in the world,” Passman said. “A person of immense integrity, Meg is driven by a powerful and clear sense of purpose.

“Meg is exceptionally mature, adaptable, and seems always to proceed with intention,” she said. “Her stories reveal her to be deeply humane and a creative, engaged, and caring teacher and citizen of the world.”

“My Earlham education helped me think more critically about borders and systems that create the global inequality that we see in today’s society,” Lyczak said. “

“My Earlham education helped me think more critically about borders and systems that create the global inequality that we see in today’s society.” Meg Lyczak

Lyczak credits her Earlham education for helping her think more critically about borders and systems. “Through the Border Studies Program I was able to understand more deeply systems of militarization and colonization globally which put my experiences into perspective,” she said.

Lyczak believes her Fulbright scholarship will be an important step in her journey.

“I have concluded that healthy communities are crucial to our changing globalized world, and I hope to build healthy intercultural communities during the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Colombia — both inside and outside of the classroom,” she said. “My experiences working and learning from people in transitional moments from many different parts of the globe will guide me as an English teaching assistant.”

Diana Guzman Rivera

Before graduating from Earlham in May with a degree in sociology-anthropology, Guzman Rivera estimates she has logged more than 1,800 hours of community service — many spent helping others learn English.

“Of those hours, approximately 500 hours were devoted to direct service assisting in a classroom, which ultimately led to my interest in applying for an English Teaching Assistantship in Mexico,” Guzman Rivera said.

As part of Earlham’s semester-long off-campus program in Ecuador, the Chicago native offered English tutoring services as a volunteer for La Fundaciόn El Arenal, a non-profit community center providing after-school services for youth. She also taught English to a coworker during an internship with Scholars of Sustenance in Bali, Indonesia. On campus, she planned and facilitated bilingual events that cater to a broader audience through Latinx House, a theme house for students at Earlham College, and the student-led Latinx and Caribbean Student Association.

“Active commitment to my community and doing service has been a transformative aspect of my upbringing and overall academic journey and will always be a part of my life,” she said.

Growing up with parents who primarily speak Spanish, Guzman Rivera understands the role English plays in a global society.

“As I grew up, I always had to navigate the English-speaking, Spanish-speaking, and English-Spanish worlds.” Diana Guzman Rivera

“As I grew up, I always had to navigate the English-speaking, Spanish-speaking, and English-Spanish worlds,” she said. “I have always been the point person for my parents with anything related to English, whether it was to order food over the phone or help translate a letter from the Secretary of State.”

Passman credits Guzman Rivera’s Earlham education and global scholarship for being an “astonishingly acute observer of cultural difference.”

“Diana shows a depth of character and wisdom that makes her a compelling representative of the United States in the World,” she said.

In addition to furthering her passion for teaching English, Guzman Rivera’s Fulbright will also deepen her connection to her Mexican heritage.

“My primary experience in Mexico is from a two-week timeframe around Christmas time, so being able to experience the culture year-round is a dream,” she said. “As a Mexican American, learning more about Mexican culture firsthand in Mexico from community members and directly experiencing all of its traditions truly excites me.”

Mary Jo Easley

As the daughter of winery owners, Easley spent her summers dodging snakes and pulling dead leaves from vineyards in southern Indiana.

“Seeing the grapes before they were crushed and bottled allowed me to realize all products have an origin in a field, forest or waterway,” said Easley, who will earn a degree in global management in May. “In my life I have witnessed grapes become more difficult to grow due to a new reality: climate change.”

As an intern at Walmart’s corporate headquarters, she studied food systems and witnessed the company’s commitment to becoming a regenerative company.

“I worked with the senior vice president of sustainability and the private label team manager, who together decide whether thousands of stores carry non-dairy milk, meat alternatives, and zero-waste products,” she said. “The scale was daunting, but it reminded me that to make global change, I will need to work with those who either currently run our economy or are willing to disrupt it.”

In addition to her academic major, Easley also completed minors in environmental sustainability and earth and environmental science at Earlham. She is currently studying abroad with Earlham faculty in New Zealand to further her interest in climate change.

“There is a homeostasis between people, profit and the planet. I want to dedicate my life to finding and spreading that balance.” Mary Jo Easley

“MJ is a serious scholar whose research on regenerative agriculture with Earlham Professor Jaime Coon was critical to her selection as a Fulbright Master’s student,” Passman said. “MJ is also an absolute dynamo. She identifies problems and immediately sets out to resolve them.

“At Earlham, she launched innovative projects like green bucket composting, a water bottle refill initiative, and a t-shirt recycling drive — the week Fulbright applications were due,” she said.

As a Fulbright scholar, Easley hopes to elevate solutions at the interface of climate and business innovation.

“There is a homeostasis between people, profit and the planet,” Easley said. “I want to dedicate my life to finding and spreading that balance.”
