Partner review: Hansika scores the brownie points in this light-hearted entertainer
Aadhi Pinnisetty and Yogi Babu combine well, in the beginning, to keep the film engaging and entertaining.

Director Manoj Damodharan seems to have made his film Partner , a simple comedy, with the sole ambition of entertaining the masses.
The movie revolves around two friends — Sridhar (Aadhi Pinisetty) and Kalyan (Yogi Babu). It is a simple light-hearted entertainer, that doesn’t pay too much attention to logic and has no message whatsoever to offer audiences.
An entrepreneur, Sridhar suffers huge losses in his shrimp farming business. He comes to the city to meet his friend Kalyan.
Kalyan works in a firm that looks like an IT office but, in reality, is basically a bunch of thieves, fraudsters and scamsters working together to cheat gullible people.
Sridhar’s sudden trip is out of desperation. He has to arrange a huge sum of money which he takes as a loan for his business from a financier. The financier demands that either Sridhar pay him back or give the hand of his sister in marriage to him.

In another part of the same city, there lives a scientist (Pandiarajan) who carries out research on animals. His research enables him to find a method through which the traits and behaviours of one animal can be transferred to another.
Looking to steal this finding and make a fortune by selling it in the international market is John Vijay (John Vijay), a former associate of the scientist.
John Vijay, a rich businessman now, employs three simpletons — Robo Shankar (Samadhanam), Thangadurai (Annadhanam), and Augustin (BlackBerry) — to steal the chip vital for the transfer.
They fail in their mission. As a result, John Vijay approaches Kalyan’s firm to complete the task.
Sridhar, who is in desperate need of money to stop his sister’s forced wedding, sees this as an opportunity to make money and convinces Kalyan to join him in this effort.
However, things get out of hand when both friends try to steal the formula. A series of unexpected developments occur and Kalyan gets accidentally turned into a woman (Hansika). What happens then is what Partner is all about.

Funny in parts .
When all that a film has to offer is comedy, one can do nothing but just smile and while away time. However, even for this to happen, most jokes in the film must work.
To director Manoj Damodharan’s credit, he creates a number of situations in the plot that provide enough scope for comedians to deliver genuinely funny jokes.
Sadly though, not all comedians make good use of the opportunities that come their way. While some jokes work, others don’t.
Performances

However, as the story progresses, the responsibility of providing the laughs falls heavily on the shoulders of actress Hansika who does a reasonably good job.
The portions where Yogi Babu turns into Hansika are quite interesting with Hansika having to reproduce Yogi Babu’s body language.
To her credit, Hansika does a fine job in several sequences and to some degree, succeeds in her mission.
Ravi Mariya as Agni Kunju and Robo Shankar as Samadhanam also provide entertainment. However, despite their best efforts the film doesn’t impress.

Partner movie: All fun and games
According to Aadhi Pinisetty, shooting for his upcoming comedy film Partner felt like being on vacation. He reveals that the upbeat mood of the film’s shoot was a refreshing change from the stressful atmosphere usually found in film sets.
“Since it is a comedy with a large ensemble cast, the mood on the sets was light-hearted. At first, I asked director Manoj Damodharan a lot of questions about the emotional state and behaviour of my character before each scene. But by the third day, I realised that the goal was not to prepare but to create fun moments on screen with the others. To discover that there was no major prep involved, unlike my previous films, was new for me. However, I soon eased into this style of working and started enjoying it,” says Aadhi.
Several fun incidents happened even between shoots. On one occasion, a sequence had to be shot in a large, multi-storeyed corporate office complex. “One office floor had been assigned to us for shooting. Once the shot was ready, I headed to that office on a particular floor. As I walked in, I noticed how wonderfully realistic the set looked. I admired the way everyone was working so earnestly at their computers.” But when everyone started staring at him, Aadhi realised something was amiss.
“Someone came up and asked me who I wanted to meet. By then I realised I had walked into a real office, on the wrong floor. When I explained, they all laughed. We had a brief chat and many came up and took selfies. After that, I went to the correct floor where the shoot was scheduled. It was a fun mix-up moment.” Due to the large ensemble cast, the actors who were not shooting for a particular scene had lots of time to chill out on sets. “If it was a serious film, between shots we would be in the mood of our character, learning lines or thinking about our performance.
But on the Partner sets, we all wanted to be in the mood of the film, so that the camaraderie would translate onto the screen. So, one activity we all did in abundance, was playing games. From Uno Flip and Ludo to Table Tennis and Ping Pong we played it all. We even improvised and invented our own games with disposable cups and had prizes for the winner.”
One time, Aadhi, Hansika Motwani and Pallak Lalwani had to shoot an intense scene in a small room. “Everyone had a continuous exchange of dialogues. It was a very noisy scene. The director was in another room with the monitor. Hansika and Pallak were taking the prompting and shouting their lines. After a while, I realised something was wrong. The room was small and the prompters had hardly any space on the sides. So, amidst all the commotion, they interchanged their dialogues by mistake. So, Hansika had picked up Pallak’s dialogues and Pallak was reciting Hansika’s lines. When the director too noticed, we all had a good laugh.”
Another time, Aadhi had to drive a bike with a Contessa car following him. “The shoot was in a maze of small lanes on the ECR. After several turns, I reached a dead end. I realised then that the Contessa car was nowhere in the vicinity and no camera was filming me. I thought I had driven too fast and left them behind.” Retracing his steps, Aadhi found that the car had broken down midway and he had been too engrossed in navigating the tiny lanes, to notice it.
Every day Aadhi looked forward to the shoot, “Each day was full of spontaneous, fun moments with Yogi Babu, Ravi Maria, John Vijay and the others. It was like going on a holiday. That camaraderie between all of us has contributed to the comedy in the film.”

Bhaiyya Ji Review: Manoj Bajpayee Is the Only Saving Grace of This Predictable Revenge Drama
Written By : Chirag Sehgal
Edited By: Shrishti Negi
Last Updated: May 24, 2024, 12:32 IST
Mumbai, India
Bhaiyya Ji U/A
- 24 May 2024 | Hindi
- 2 hrs 15 mins | Drama,
- Starring: Manoj Bajpayee, Vipin Sharma, Jatin Goswami, Suvinder Vicky, Zoya Hussain
- Director: Apoorv Singh Karki
Directed by Apoorv Singh Karki, Bhaiyya Ji revolves around a man who stands up for his family and seeks revenge for his younger brother's murder.
When I walked into a theatre to watch Bhaiyya Ji, I was excited to see what Manoj Bajpayee was going to present in his 100th movie. However, as soon as the film ended, I was left wondering if it was worth the hype.
Directed by Apoorv Singh Karki, Bhaiyya Ji revolves around a man who stands up for his family and seeks revenge for his younger brother’s murder. In the film, Manoj Bajpayee plays the role of Ram Charan aka Bhaiyya ji. He unleashes his inner gangster after his younger brother is burnt alive by a goon’s son in Delhi.
Bhaiyya Ji’s narration and techniques follow the template of that of a Telugu or a Tamil movie. The setting of the film, its characters, the way they act and the way Bhaiyya ji is introduced – everything in the film is what you see in every other South movie.
The film establishes Bhaiyya Ji as somebody who is committing crimes for a larger good, even if it requires killing 100s of men. The trait is often found in a Telugu or a Tamil movie. Just like any other South film, Bhaiyya Ji also uses a grieving mother whose only dream is to see her son taking revenge and killing their culprit. The film will also remind you of Yash’s KGF at several points.
However, this does not mean that the director hasn’t done his job well. Even if you accuse him of aping a particular template, he has done it remarkably. Even though he struggles to make the film intriguing, the director makes sure that nobody gets bored while watching his film. The action of the film is top-notch.
However, there are several loopholes in the movie. During the climax, Bhaiyya Ji fights his rivals at their residence. However, the setting keeps changing in almost every second scene. Manoj kills the first man in the Haveli’s hall but then enters a room which looks like it was closed and untouched for ages. Maybe, the makers should have paid more attention to the film’s setting.
Another problem with the film is its low budget – which is very explicitly visible on screen. The film needed VFX for very few scenes. Guess what? It ruined that too. SPOILER ALERT! The scene where Manoj Bajpayee falls into a river after being shot is so terribly presented. No effort has been put into the VFX there. It not only takes away the seriousness of the scene but also makes it look animated.
The film is also very predictable. There are scenes where you can easily guess what is going to happen next. For instance, when Bhaiyya Ji’s bride-to-be is attacked, you know exactly when and where he will enter the frame to save her.
Even though the plot of Bhaiyya Ji is simple, it looks stretched. In 2 hours and 15 minutes, the film hardly features any exciting twists. Although Manoj Bajpayee plays his role with utmost sincerity, he does not really fit the character.

Is Furiosa CGI Bad or Too Much in Mad Max Saga?
By Nicholas Tan
Complaints about the Furiosa CGI began when the debut trailer dropped, but what about the CGI in the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga movie? The original film in the franchise, Mad Max: Fury Road, is known for using mainly practical effects for its action scenes , though many of them were enhanced with the use of CGI. Either way, the amount of CGI in this Furiosa prequel is quite high. Now critics and fans who have seen and reviewed the movie have made their case known. Here’s whether the Furiosa CGI is good or bad, or perhaps way too much.
Do critics and fans think the Furiosa CGI is good or bad?
In general, critics and fans believe that the Furiosa CGI is overdone and in some cases poor. However, that’s just a broad consensus and personal opinions on the quality of the movie’s CGI fluctuate quite a bit.
Some critics think that the CGI hurts the Mad Max prequel more than it helps. Doug Jamieson of The Jam Report states on Twitter that “the CGI is often ghastly” while Peter Gray of The AU Review thinks that the “overt CGI may irk some.” Writing for Forbes , Scott Phillips writes that the “CGI dominates the action with its jerky, weightless mayhem” in the first hour of the film.
Fans are somewhat mixed on the film’s quality of CGI. Scanning the user reviews for the movie on IMDB, one writes that “many CGI shots look fake” while another says there are “loads of bad CGI.” On the other hand, one user the CGI is “top-notch” and that a movie like this needs a lot of it to work. Another comments that the CGI, cinematography, and music are “sick.”
Despite the controversy over the movie’s CGI, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga still stands at a decent 80 on Metacritic , and at the time of writing, the IMDB user score is around the same at 8.1 out of 10.

In this article, we've curated a list of must-watch romantic Tamil films available on OTT platforms. From timeless classics to modern hits, these movies promise to take you on a journey through love, heartbreak, and everything in between.
Pannaiyarum Padminiyum (2014): Vijay Sethupathi, Aishwarya Rajesh
Available On: Amazon Prime Video
'Pannaiyarum Padminiyum' is a sweet romance that captures the fleeting moments of love between an elderly married couple who come across an old Premier Padmini car. This delicate love story beautifully traces the journey of falling in love with someone you've spent most of your life with. Pannaiyar and his wife, living alone in their spacious home, often get on each other's nerves but can't imagine being apart. Their only daughter is married and lives in a nearby town. Despite their bickering, their deep bond and affection shine through. Featuring Jayaprakash, Tulasi, and Vijay Sethupathi, this film is a cozy, feel-good experience that highlights the beauty in the little things that make love special.
Kaatru Veliyidai (2017): Karthi, Aditi Rao Hydari
'Kaatru Veliyidai' is a romantic drama that also serves as a cautionary tale about the adverse effects of abusive relationships. Directed by Mani Ratnam, this film embodies his signature style with picturesque songs, stunning locations, and impeccably staged intimate scenes. The story revolves around a hot-headed fighter pilot and a doctor, exploring the dynamics of their mentally abusive relationship. 'Kaatru Veliyidai' delves into the suppressed notions of toxic masculinity and the patriarchy that often underpins many relationships. It carefully examines the traumatic residues left behind by such relationships. As with many Mani Ratnam romances, the film concludes on a hopeful note, but it’s the emotional journey that truly resonates with the audience.
O Kadhal Kanmani (2015): Dulquer Salman, Nithya Menon, Prakash Raj
'O Kadhal Kanmani' resonates deeply with audiences for its portrayal of the complexity and messiness inherent in modern-day relationships. The film refreshes the typical rom-com formula by focusing on a live-in couple grappling with their feelings for each other. They are influenced by observing an elderly couple, where the wife suffers from Alzheimer's and the husband dedicates his life to her care.
This movie explores how relationships operate in the current age and demonstrates that love can transcend the barriers we often set for ourselves. The youthful album by A.R. Rahman, combined with the compelling chemistry between Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen, enhances the narrative. Additionally, Prakash Raj and Leela Samson deliver memorable performances as the older couple, symbolizing selfless, enduring love.
96 (2018): Vijay Sethupathi, Trisha
Available On: SonyLIV
'96' is a haunting tale of long-lost lovers reconnecting with their present selves. Set against the backdrop of a high school reunion, this romance delves into the enduring wounds and emotional turmoil from a tragically cut-short connection between two people separated by fate. Ram, a travel photographer, confronts his true feelings for Jaanu, a married woman with a daughter, who shares his regret over their past.
This nostalgic journey is a poignant exploration of a "what-if" scenario, much like the heartbreaking romance in Celine Song's Oscar-nominated 'Past Lives' (2023). '96' captures the essence of unspoken love through glances, eye rolls, and moments of quiet introspection, expressed more through silences than words. The film beautifully portrays how two people, forever changed by their past, navigate their complex emotions in the present.
Love Today (2022): Pradeep Ranganathan, Ivana
Available On: Netflix
'Love Today' explores the fissures in modern relationships caused by an excessive dependence on mobile phones, which often become the breeding ground for breakups and misunderstandings. The film centers on a seemingly normal couple whose mutual trust and love are tested when the girl's father imposes an intriguing condition for their marriage: they must swap their phones for a week.
This instantly funny plotline allows 'Love Today' to mine humor and offer lighthearted commentary on how an excessively online culture can erode trust in relationships. While subtlety isn't the film's strong suit, its imaginative turn of events and engaging narrative make it a compelling watch. The film cleverly highlights the complexities and challenges of love in the digital age, making viewers reflect on their own dependence on technology in their relationships.
Thiruchitrambalam (2022): Dhanush, Nithya Menon, Raashi Khanna, Priya Bhavani Shankar
'Thiruchitrambalam,' starring Dhanush, tells the story of three men from different generations of a family, each coming to terms with a shared tragedy from their past. The film also explores the evolving relationship between two childhood friends who mistake their deep concern for each other amidst heartbreaks and life-altering revelations.
A breezy and comfortable watch, 'Thiruchitrambalam' tackles relatable aspects of life with minimal judgment towards its loner characters who are struggling to find their place in the world. This understated romance manages to tug at your heartstrings while leaving you feeling hopeful about the characters' eventual outcomes. It's a film that blends emotional depth with a sense of optimism, making it a touching and memorable experience.
Raja Rani (2013): Nayanthara, Arya, Jai, Nazriya Fahad
'Raja Rani' is a breezy romantic drama that delves into the fate of romances not destined to work out, even under the best circumstances. The film follows the lives of two star-crossed couples whose paths change dramatically when they are forced into marriage.
Told through flashbacks, 'Raja Rani' portrays the tragic beauty of lost love and how it can lead to unexpected growth and new beginnings. Arya and Nayanthara play the troubled couple, reflecting on their past loves and slowly coming to accept each other through the turbulence of their marriage. Their journey of gradual acceptance forms the heart of the film.
In his directorial debut, Atlee crafts characters that the audience genuinely cares about. 'Raja Rani' strikes a delicate balance, being poignant without veering into excessive manipulation, making it a touching and memorable exploration of love and loss.
