Presentation Secondary School, Wexford

Mission Statement

Presentation, Wexford, is a Catholic Secondary School for girls only, guided by the ideals of Nano Nagle, foundress of the Presentation Congregation.

“Inspired by the vision of Nano Nagle, our school is committed to the pursuit of excellence in a caring, respectful and inclusive community.”

School History

The Presentation Congregation was founded in Cork in 1775 by Nano Nagle, a daughter of one of the oldest families in the country. The aim was to help downtrodden citizens by the only means in her power – to provide them with schools and education. The story of Presentation, Wexford, started in October 1818, when two sisters came from the already established convent in Kilkenny.

They started by opening a Primary school. About 1940 a second-level school was established and in the following years the school became a fully recognized Secondary school.

The Presentation order was established in Wexford town in October 1818, being the first religious order to come to the town after the Penal Laws. In the 1820s, the Presentation Sisters established a school, which has, over time, developed into the Presentation Secondary School. We will mark 200 years of providing education to the town of Wexford in 2018.

The school currently operates under the trusteeship of C. E. I. S. T. (Catholic Education an Irish Schools Trust). As such, it supports the Religious and Educational Philosophy of its Founder, Nano Nagle. Religious Education takes a central place in the life and curriculum of the school. We are an all-girl, voluntary secondary school and are situated in a primarily residential area of Wexford town.

Presentation School Wexford aims, with the resources available, to provide the best possible environment in which to facilitate the cultural, educational, moral, physical, religious, social, linguistic and spiritual values and traditions of all students.

Presentation Secondary School, Wexford provides for a wide range of artistic, cultural, social and sporting activities to develop the talents of all students and to provide them with the confidence to be involved in various activities in later life. The school also places great emphasis on the development of competitive games for all its students.

Working together as a school community, the Board of Management, parents, staff and students aim to provide an environment that will allow each student to develop intellectually, physically, morally, socially and spiritually so that she will be able to fulfil her role in society.

The current student cohort of 803 reflects a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds and includes students from the locality and a considerably large rural hinterland. There is a strong culture of C. P. D. for the teaching staff within the school. The school offers the Junior Certificate, an optional and well-established Transition Year (T. Y.) programme, the established Leaving Certificate and L.C.V.P. We have approximately 26 schools in our catchment area.

Leaving Cert Geography: Thought provoking

A mixture of topical questions and tricky language, but overall a fair challenge for students this morning.

Grainne Faller

Rote learners beware: this morning's higher level geography paper required an understanding of the topics. "Even if you'd learned the whole course off by heart it wouldn't have been enough," said Asti representative Neil Curran, who teaches geography in St Columba's College Co Donegal.

It was a somewhat difficult paper in which to get an A according to Curran. “Some of the phrasing was different than usual,” he said. “For example, the phrase ‘sedimentary influence’ was used where it would usually would usually be ‘limestone influence’. That might have thrown some students.”

The paper was a topical one, encompassing topics such as inflation, unemployment, renewable energy, multinational companies and the European Union. The choice of questions was well balanced according to Michael Doran, geography teacher at the Institute of Education.

The short answer questions were wide ranging and fair, according to teachers. "The diagrams used were a good mixture of new and familiar material," said Valerie Redmond, geography teacher in the Presentation Secondary School, Wexford. "Students were required to think in several different directions which was good."

Clear presentation and good layout of the paper belied a tricky section on regional geography. “There were some variations on standard questions,” Doran said. The physical geography questions were, “clear and familiar”, however, and questions asked in the electives section were, “relevant and achievable”, according to Redmond. “They probably would have provided some relief after the challenge of regional geography,” she said.

Curran had a complaint about the ordinary level paper. “Once again the photos were too small,” he said. “It’s a gripe I have every year – ordinary level students sometimes finds it hard to recognise features and they need a good picture.”

Physical geography at ordinary level presented something of a challenge according to Redmond. “The questions were a bit wordy which would have presented a challenge,” she said.

Overall, the paper was described as very achievable however. Some teachers even learned a little. “There was an interesting question about an earthquake off the coast of Dublin in 2013,” Curran said. “I didn’t even know about it.”

  • Primary economic activities (water, oil and gas, peat bogs, over-fishing, farming)
  • Secondary economic activities (industry as an example of a system, acid rain, disagreements over industry)
  • Tertiary economic activities (tourism, Mediterranean tourism, problems0
  • Economic inequality

Map reading and aerial photographs

The geography exam in the junior Cert is two hours long and is of the following format.

Section 1 – Folder

These short questions can range over all sections of the course and will typically examine you on physical geography (including climate), on human geography (including problems of underdeveloped countries), and on the Ordnance Survey map.

When answering these Folder questions, ensure that you answer all 20 of them. If in doubt make your best guess – there are no marks lost for trying.

In the three questions out of the twenty where you are given an either/or choice, answer both parts. A lot of these questions are merely testing if you can read the information given to you in the various lists of statistics or pie-charts or bar-graphs given on the paper. Therefore, it is vital that you stay calm and read each question carefully. At the same time remember that you have to answer 20 questions in approximately 40 minutes, this means that you have just two minutes to answer each of these short questions.

You need a total of 60 marks to pass Junior Cert. Geography. Section 1 (the Folder Section) carries exactly 60 marks. A good performance on this section will see you well on your way to a good grade overall in this exam.

Section 2 – Longer Questions

These general questions will range over the sections on Social, Economic and Physical Geography and you can expect at least one question on Aerial Photographs and Maps. When attempting these questions, remember:

  • Choice of questions.

Read all questions carefully at the beginning, then decide which three of the five you are going to answer.

  • Answering Style

The style of answering will vary a little from question to question. The best way to answer each question is in point form or in short concise sentences which clearly try to answer the question asked. Make a statement and then develop that same statement.

  • Use of Diagrams

With the exception of the Aerial Photograph and the Ordnance Survey questions, the drawing of maps and diagrams is not especially important at Junior Cert. If you have to draw a diagram it is advisable to always use a pencil. This allows you to erase any mistakes you may have made.

  • Ordnance Survey and Photograph Questions

Sometimes there are separate questions and sometimes there is an overlap where the map and photo questions are combined. You may be asked to draw a sketch map. If you are follow the guidelines your teacher gave you in class(and again use a pencil).

You will often be asked to give examples of specific features on the Ordnance Survey Map. When referring to these features, make sure to give four-figure grid references if at all possible. Remember to include the sub-zone letter before the four figs (e.g. T273). Or to be more accurate you can give a six figure grid reference.( T4459876).

Remember when answering a question on a map or photo to SEE the answer. I.E

Make a S tatement —- E xplain the statement and give map or photo E vidence
