It happens when foreign, dangerous substances—such as chemicals, garbage, or polluted materials are released into bodies of water, either directly or indirectly.

Land | When the quality of the earth's land surfaces in terms of use, landscape, and capacity to support life forms is compromised or destroyed, this is referred to as land pollution. It is frequently brought on by human activity and the misuse of land resources, both directly and indirectly.

Soil | Chemical pollutants can pollute soil or cause it to degrade through activities like mining, clearing vegetation, or topsoil erosion. Typically, it occurs when human activities bring harmful chemicals, substances, or items into the soil.

Noise | Noise pollution is an unpleasant sound or a sound that causes excruciating ear pain. Noise pollution is described as unpleasant and unwanted sound levels that cause significant distress to all living beings. It is measured in decibels (dB).

Factors Responsible For Environmental Pollution

Environmental pollution has a variety of causes. One of the most prominent is the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas by power plants, factories and automobiles. This produces large amounts of carbon dioxide, which is a major contributor to global climate change. Other sources of environmental pollution include agricultural practices, such as over-fertilization and the use of pesticides, and industrial processes, such as mining, manufacturing and waste disposal.

What Can We Do

To prevent environmental pollution, we must reduce the emissions of various pollutants. We can do this by switching to renewable sources of energy like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. They can also be created by human activity, such as trash or runoff produced by factories. Pollutants damage the quality of air, water, and land. Many things that are useful to people produce pollution. Cars spew pollutants from their exhaust pipes. Burning coal to create electricity pollutes the air. Industries and homes generate garbage and sewage that can pollute the land and water. Pesticides —chemical poisons used to kill weeds and insects— seep into waterways and harm wildlife . All living things—from one-celled microbes to blue whales—depend on Earth ’s supply of air and water. When these resources are polluted, all forms of life are threatened. Pollution is a global problem. Although urban areas are usually more polluted than the countryside, pollution can spread to remote places where no people live. For example, pesticides and other chemicals have been found in the Antarctic ice sheet . In the middle of the northern Pacific Ocean, a huge collection of microscopic plastic particles forms what is known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch . Air and water currents carry pollution. Ocean currents and migrating fish carry marine pollutants far and wide. Winds can pick up radioactive material accidentally released from a nuclear reactor and scatter it around the world. Smoke from a factory in one country drifts into another country. In the past, visitors to Big Bend National Park in the U.S. state of Texas could see 290 kilometers (180 miles) across the vast landscape . Now, coal-burning power plants in Texas and the neighboring state of Chihuahua, Mexico have spewed so much pollution into the air that visitors to Big Bend can sometimes see only 50 kilometers (30 miles). The three major types of pollution are air pollution , water pollution , and land pollution . Air Pollution Sometimes, air pollution is visible . A person can see dark smoke pour from the exhaust pipes of large trucks or factories, for example. More often, however, air pollution is invisible . Polluted air can be dangerous, even if the pollutants are invisible. It can make people’s eyes burn and make them have difficulty breathing. It can also increase the risk of lung cancer . Sometimes, air pollution kills quickly. In 1984, an accident at a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, released a deadly gas into the air. At least 8,000 people died within days. Hundreds of thou sands more were permanently injured. Natural disasters can also cause air pollution to increase quickly. When volcanoes erupt , they eject volcanic ash and gases into the atmosphere . Volcanic ash can discolor the sky for months. After the eruption of the Indonesian volcano of Krakatoa in 1883, ash darkened the sky around the world. The dimmer sky caused fewer crops to be harvested as far away as Europe and North America. For years, meteorologists tracked what was known as the “equatorial smoke stream .” In fact, this smoke stream was a jet stream , a wind high in Earth’s atmosphere that Krakatoa’s air pollution made visible. Volcanic gases , such as sulfur dioxide , can kill nearby residents and make the soil infertile for years. Mount Vesuvius, a volcano in Italy, famously erupted in 79, killing hundreds of residents of the nearby towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Most victims of Vesuvius were not killed by lava or landslides caused by the eruption. They were choked, or asphyxiated , by deadly volcanic gases. In 1986, a toxic cloud developed over Lake Nyos, Cameroon. Lake Nyos sits in the crater of a volcano. Though the volcano did not erupt, it did eject volcanic gases into the lake. The heated gases passed through the water of the lake and collected as a cloud that descended the slopes of the volcano and into nearby valleys . As the toxic cloud moved across the landscape, it killed birds and other organisms in their natural habitat . This air pollution also killed thousands of cattle and as many as 1,700 people. Most air pollution is not natural, however. It comes from burning fossil fuels —coal, oil , and natural gas . When gasoline is burned to power cars and trucks, it produces carbon monoxide , a colorless, odorless gas. The gas is harmful in high concentrations , or amounts. City traffic produces highly concentrated carbon monoxide. Cars and factories produce other common pollutants, including nitrogen oxide , sulfur dioxide, and hydrocarbons . These chemicals react with sunlight to produce smog , a thick fog or haze of air pollution. The smog is so thick in Linfen, China, that people can seldom see the sun. Smog can be brown or grayish blue, depending on which pollutants are in it. Smog makes breathing difficult, especially for children and older adults. Some cities that suffer from extreme smog issue air pollution warnings. The government of Hong Kong, for example, will warn people not to go outside or engage in strenuous physical activity (such as running or swimming) when smog is very thick.

When air pollutants such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide mix with moisture, they change into acids . They then fall back to earth as acid rain . Wind often carries acid rain far from the pollution source. Pollutants produced by factories and power plants in Spain can fall as acid rain in Norway. Acid rain can kill all the trees in a forest . It can also devastate lakes, streams, and other waterways. When lakes become acidic, fish can’t survive . In Sweden, acid rain created thousands of “ dead lakes ,” where fish no longer live. Acid rain also wears away marble and other kinds of stone . It has erased the words on gravestones and damaged many historic buildings and monuments . The Taj Mahal , in Agra, India, was once gleaming white. Years of exposure to acid rain has left it pale. Governments have tried to prevent acid rain by limiting the amount of pollutants released into the air. In Europe and North America, they have had some success, but acid rain remains a major problem in the developing world , especially Asia. Greenhouse gases are another source of air pollution. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane occur naturally in the atmosphere. In fact, they are necessary for life on Earth. They absorb sunlight reflected from Earth, preventing it from escaping into space. By trapping heat in the atmosphere, they keep Earth warm enough for people to live. This is called the greenhouse effect . But human activities such as burning fossil fuels and destroying forests have increased the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This has increased the greenhouse effect, and average temperatures across the globe are rising. The decade that began in the year 2000 was the warmest on record. This increase in worldwide average temperatures, caused in part by human activity, is called global warming . Global warming is causing ice sheets and glaciers to melt. The melting ice is causing sea levels to rise at a rate of two millimeters (0.09 inches) per year. The rising seas will eventually flood low-lying coastal regions . Entire nations, such as the islands of Maldives, are threatened by this climate change . Global warming also contributes to the phenomenon of ocean acidification . Ocean acidification is the process of ocean waters absorbing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Fewer organisms can survive in warmer, less salty waters. The ocean food web is threatened as plants and animals such as coral fail to adapt to more acidic oceans. Scientists have predicted that global warming will cause an increase in severe storms . It will also cause more droughts in some regions and more flooding in others. The change in average temperatures is already shrinking some habitats, the regions where plants and animals naturally live. Polar bears hunt seals from sea ice in the Arctic. The melting ice is forcing polar bears to travel farther to find food , and their numbers are shrinking. People and governments can respond quickly and effectively to reduce air pollution. Chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are a dangerous form of air pollution that governments worked to reduce in the 1980s and 1990s. CFCs are found in gases that cool refrigerators, in foam products, and in aerosol cans . CFCs damage the ozone layer , a region in Earth’s upper atmosphere. The ozone layer protects Earth by absorbing much of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation . When people are exposed to more ultraviolet radiation, they are more likely to develop skin cancer, eye diseases, and other illnesses. In the 1980s, scientists noticed that the ozone layer over Antarctica was thinning. This is often called the “ ozone hole .” No one lives permanently in Antarctica. But Australia, the home of more than 22 million people, lies at the edge of the hole. In the 1990s, the Australian government began an effort to warn people of the dangers of too much sun. Many countries, including the United States, now severely limit the production of CFCs. Water Pollution Some polluted water looks muddy, smells bad, and has garbage floating in it. Some polluted water looks clean, but is filled with harmful chemicals you can’t see or smell. Polluted water is unsafe for drinking and swimming. Some people who drink polluted water are exposed to hazardous chemicals that may make them sick years later. Others consume bacteria and other tiny aquatic organisms that cause disease. The United Nations estimates that 4,000 children die every day from drinking dirty water. Sometimes, polluted water harms people indirectly. They get sick because the fish that live in polluted water are unsafe to eat. They have too many pollutants in their flesh. There are some natural sources of water pollution. Oil and natural gas, for example, can leak into oceans and lakes from natural underground sources. These sites are called petroleum seeps . It’s the year 2050, and the Los Angeles River runs lazily along, sparkling in the sunlight, as the hum of freeway traffic weaves through the idyllic setting. Standing on the riverbank, teenagers Kerstin and Yolanda agree to work together to hunt down a lost electronic toy. Will their mission, and their friendship, survive in spite of their socioeconomic differences

Kerstin and Yolanda are characters in a short film produced by UCLA faculty, students and alumni. But they’re not played by actors; they’re computer-generated avatars. And the landscapes and neighborhoods they’re about to explore weren’t filmed in present-day Los Angeles, but rather produced using a modified, or “modded,” version of the video game Grand Theft Auto V.

It’s all part of a project called “Grand Theft Eco,” a series of three short films created over the past five years by a team led by English professors Ursula Heise and Danny Snelson under the auspices of UCLA’s Laboratory for Environmental Narrative Strategies, or LENS.

The first episode will premiere on May 20 at 4 p.m. in Kaplan Hall room 193.

A world-building experience

Close to two dozen undergraduates and graduate students collaborated on the effort — writing the scripts, voice-acting the characters and reprogramming the video game’s infrastructure to function as the “sets” for their stories. The series explores questions about Los Angeles’ environmental future and related issues of economic and social justice, and each episode has its own theme: the revitalization of the Los Angeles River, private–public competition over electric power, and urban wildlife.

Producing “Grand Theft Eco” was both a cinematic and world-building endeavor: Even before filming began, the team had to painstakingly mod the environments and settings of Grand Theft Auto to bring to life a new vision of Los Angeles’ environmental future. In Grand Theft Auto, gamers compete as criminals in a fictional city called Los Santos, which is modeled after Los Angeles.

The game has a reputation for violent and misogynistic content, but the UCLA team had other plans for their modded version. The filmmakers worked in the video game’s code to redesign parts of Los Santos, taking into account real-life plans that have been laid out for Los Angeles.

“By using GTA V, we’re defamiliarizing scenes from the game,” Snelson said. “How far can we push a game built for violence and high-speed chases to tell really poignant narratives toward a better real-world Los Angeles? How can we highlight these speculative futures in order to see our present differently?”

Using a modified video game as the shell for narrative storytelling is unusual for a project of this scale, but not an entirely new one: The practice of modifying video games for cinematic productions has been around for decades and the commonly used term for the approach, “machinima,” was coined in 1998.

Expanding perspectives and audiences

“Both films and video games offer important tool sets for environmental narrative,” Heise said. “No one story can encompass the parallel crises the planet is currently undergoing, nor can one narrative capture the wide variety of audiences that environmental communication needs to reach.

“Animated films and video games contribute distinctive media and genres to environmental storytelling at the same time that they help to expand the audiences for the narrative about the future, both for humans and our planet’s other species.”

Beyond their writing, programming and acting contributions, students also lent knowledge drawn from their other academic work.

Chase Niesner, who recently completed his doctorate at the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, studies human–coyote relations in Los Angeles. Besides serving as a cinematographer, he contributed research that shaped the third episode , which explores questions of belonging for humans and animals, and the ideas of homes and homelessness.

“You can analyze something with one kind of logic, but when you introduce a different kind of poetics into your process, all sorts of strange relations and associations then come from the back of the mind to the forefront,” Niesner said. “In working with the shooting and editing software, I was able to intuitively explore what it might mean to look — with the camera in this case — through other beings’ eyes, and this inspired me to see the webs of the urban ecology as something kind of like the fabric of cinema.”

Angel Tolentino, a former UCLA undergraduate and current affiliate of LENS who modded the game, said the out-of-the-box thinking required to create machinima also lends itself to thinking creatively about the city’s environmental future.

“To build a better world, we must envision one,” Tolentino said. “I think this is a creative step in the right direction.”

The project does not shy away from questions about injustice and inequality, but Heise said it does convey some sense of “optopia” — a term coined by the science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson that means the best world possible given existing circumstances.

“The goal is to tell stories about environmental futures that don’t just fall into apocalypse, post-apocalypse or dystopia,” Heise said. “A world that is more just, more fair, not as hard on nonhumans, even one that isn’t perfect, is worth striving for and investing in. We want to steal the future back from pessimistic visions and dare to imagine an urban ecotopia in Los Angeles.”

Studies identifying the relative importance of multiple ecological processes in macroinvertebrate communities in urban lakes at a basin scale are rare. In this study, 14 urban lakes in the Taihu Lake Basin were selected to explore the relative importance of environmental filtering and spatial processes in the assembly of macroinvertebrate communities. Our findings revealed significant spatiotemporal variations in macroinvertebrate communities, both between lakes and across seasons. We found that environmental filtering exerted a greater influence on taxonomic total beta diversity and its individual components (species turnover and nestedness) compared to spatial processes. Key environmental variables such as water depth, water temperature, total dissolved solids, chlorophyll a , and lake surface area were found to be crucial in shaping macroinvertebrate communities within these urban lakes. The observed high spatial heterogeneity in environmental conditions, along with intermediate basin areas, good connectivity and short distances between lakes, and the high dispersal ability of dominant taxa, likely contributed to the dominance of environmental filtering in macroinvertebrate community assembly. Our study contributes to a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms governing macroinvertebrate community assembly in urban lakes, thereby providing valuable insights for studies on community ecology and water environmental protection in urban lakes.

University of Delaware community reports new presentations, awards and publications

For the Record provides information about recent professional activities and honors of University of Delaware faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Presentations

On May 17, Margaret Stetz , Mae and Robert Carter Professor of Women's Studies and professor of humanities, was an invited participant in an international online research workshop sponsored by the British Association of Decadence Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. The focus was on a 1907 British Decadent novel, The Hill of Dreams , and the participants discussed new critical approaches to this understudied text.

Christopher Nichols , associate professor of clarinet, has been elected president elect of the International Clarinet Association (ICA). The six-year commitment begins Sept. 1, 2024, with a two-year term as president elect, followed by two years as ICA president and then by two years as immediate past president. The ICA a diverse and inclusive community of clarinetists and clarinet enthusiasts that supports projects that will benefit clarinet performance; provides opportunities for the exchange of ideas, materials, and information among its members; fosters the composition, publication, recording, and distribution of music for the clarinet; encourages the research and manufacture of a more definitive clarinet; encourages communication and cooperation among clarinetists and the music industry; and encourages and promotes the performance and teaching of a wide variety of repertoire for the clarinet. The ICA supports workshops, competitions and the annual ClarinetFest conference.

Brandan Henry , post MFA researcher in the Department of Art and Design, received a 2024 Delaware Division of the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship in Visual Arts: Works on Paper. His focus is on understanding how social conditions shape identity and perception. Henry’s work contributes to the celebration of Black culture and highlights aspects of daily life, capturing the richness and dignity of represented Black bodies. As a 2024 fellow, Henry’s work is part of the Award Winners XXIV exhibition, on view through July 28, 2024, at the Biggs Museum of American Art , and he will have a solo exhibition of new work at the Mezzanine Gallery in the Carvel State Office Building.

Barbara Lu , Arqan Tariq and Daniel Zorrilla , doctoral students in the public policy and administration program at the Joseph R. Biden, Jr. School of Public Policy and Administration, received fellowships from the Public Administration Theory Network for the 2024 cohort.

Salvesila Tamima , a doctoral student in the disaster science and management program at the Biden School, was recently appointed co-director of the American Association of Geographers specialty group for Hazards, Risks and Disasters.

Cate Morrissey , associate director of the Center for Historic Architecture and Design (CHAD) in the Biden School, was awarded a $348,655 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for the project "Stabilizing and Disseminating the Center for Historic Architecture and Design's Archive of Vanishing Historic Architecture of the Mid-Atlantic." The grant, which was included in a $26.2 million total in NEH awards distributed nationwide earlier this spring, will fund the hire of a digital archivist to assist with the re-accessioning, migration and file conversion of over 1,800 born digital photographs, AutoCAD files and reports, as well as the digitization of 600 field notes and architectural drawings documenting historical vernacular architecture and buildings of the Mid-Atlantic region. Digital files will be included in multiple databases for public access.

Chandra Reedy , director of the Center for Historic Architecture and Design (CHAD) and professor in the Biden School, was named a national finalist in the 2023 Wiki Science Photo Competition under the Microscopy category and the Image Sets category for Crystals in Song Dynasty Glaze . The winning U.S. images will represent the United States at the international level.

The Prairie Potholes Project , a short film about the ecology, history and beauty of the Prairie Pothole Region, received the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists’ 2024 Environmental Communications Award Grand Prize. Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering Yu-Ping (Yo) Chin and Associate Professor of Art and Design Jon Cox served as principal investigators, and Cox was also the executive producer, working with a team of researchers funded by the National Science Foundation, including William Arnold (University of Minnesota), Brandy Toner (University of Minnesota) and Michael Wilkins (Ohio State University). The film brings awareness to the region, which spans an area of the northern Great Plains and is home to the unique ecosystem composed of millions of small depressional wetlands and lakes that are connected hydrologically through groundwater. More than half of North American waterfowl breed in the region, which faces threats from development, chemical pollution and climate change.

Aditya Kunjapur , assistant professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering , has won the 2024 BioInnovation Institute & Science Prize for Innovation . This award recognizes researchers who have made significant advances using protected or licensed materials, such as proprietary drugs, diagnostics, or other healthcare-related technologies. Kunjapur was named the Grand Prize winner based on the findings presented in his essay “ Planting a chemical flag on antigens .” The essay details Kunjapur and his team’s innovative way of making proteins previously unseen to the immune system more visible and memorable. This finding could help with the development of new vaccines, especially for bacterial infections.

The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) honored three faculty and staff members at its Celebrating Excellence gathering. Sue Barton , who serves as a Cooperative Extension specialist and professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, was honored with the Excellence in Extension Award. Larry Armstrong , manager of Webb Farm, received the 2024 Excellence in Service Award. Finally, the college bestowed Kent Messer , S. Hallock du Pont Professor of Applied Economics, with the Excellence in Research Award. Read the full feature about these awardees on CANR’s website .

Publications

Ravi Ammigan , associate provost for international programs, has co-edited the book Supporting International Students in US Higher Education: A Theory-Based Approach . Published with Palgrave Macmillan, this volume pairs scholars with practitioners to explore various topics of importance and relevance in international student affairs. The chapters are grounded in theory and practice and focus on an integrative approach for developing inclusive, collaborative and culturally responsive support systems for students both inside and outside of the classroom.
