A classroom is a learning place where we learn academic and social skills. The classroom plays an essential role in the overall development of an individual. The school teachings help us develop into good human beings both for educational and social purposes.

My classroom is situated opposite the principal's room. There is a big garden in between them. In our free time, we see the children playing basketball, Kho-kho, badminton etc. In my classroom, there is a notice board which is decorated by us. We have decorated the board with motivational quotes, names of students of the class and their birthdays. My classroom is considered one of the beautiful classrooms of the school.

200 Words Essay On My Classroom

My classroom is situated near the school library on the ground floor. So, whenever there is a free period, we go to the library and read our favourite books and newspapers. Also, there is a big garden in front of my classroom. The mango tree near the classroom window provides summer shade and cool air. We can hear the chirping of birds in the classroom. Another reason I enjoy my class is the teacher, who is always so kind and encourages us to participate in various activities. She always motivates us to participate in competitions with the management of studies. She inspires us to be perfect both in academic as well as extracurricular activities.

My classroom is different from the whole school. This is because various students in my classroom are best in various fields. The sports students always bring medals in state and national level tournaments. Every year, the school, as well as state toppers, come from my classroom.

I like enjoying nature and love to spend time in nature. The natural environment of my classroom gives me the same feeling as many beautiful flowers and trees are in front of my classroom. I have also grown some of them.

During the festive seasons, I also give my contribution to class decoration. I decorate the classroom with rangoli, light diyas and candles on Diwali. Lack of access to reading and writing put blind people at a serious disadvantage in nineteenth-century society. Text was one of the primary methods through which people engaged with culture, communicated with others, and accessed information; without a well-developed reading system that did not rely on sight, blind people were excluded from social participation (Weygand, 2009). Teaching Autoethnography

3. writing essays for class: the first steps.

In this chapter, I will focus on a few ideas that will inform the students’ formal writing for the semester. I will begin by reviewing concepts that may be confusing for students creating personal nonfiction and qualitative narratives. These will be in a form that you can distribute to students, much like the assignments of the previous chapter. I will also include more difficult exercises that ask students to establish themselves as interesting parts of the narratives they are creating. These are important steps moving toward the larger, longer autoethnographic writing they will be doing for their research assignment. This work should appear in the third and fourth weeks as preparation for the larger essay. For all extended writing assignments, especially longer essays, I encourage using a drafting process that allows students to work with classmates from invention of concept, to initial draft, to final version and rewrite, if necessary.

The “Who Cares?” Factor

In all classroom writing, one of the biggest issues is what I like to call the “Who cares?” factor. It is a rude question that I often pose to myself as a writer and feel is important to pose to my students. Sure, I can write a piece about this or that, but who cares? Inherent in this question are many considerations about audience. In all of their writing, students should have an intended audience. Audience is often dictated to us, whether by a professor, peers, a boss, a colleague, a friend or a family member. Just as students adjust their writing style to suit each occasion when they are directly aware of their audience (I would assume most of us would not write an email to our boss the same way we might to our great aunt), they need to have an audience they have identified for their formal writing in class. This intention is key to the success of their pieces. In addition, creating something they care about is essential to the success of any piece of writing. If they cannot include themselves in the answer to “Who cares?” nobody will benefit. Sure, they may care to the extent that their teacher is making them write something and will be assigning them a grade on that piece of writing. Above and beyond that, though, what do they want to accomplish in their essays? Outside of school, students will often be asked to develop ideas and pieces for intended audiences they have identified as important. They will be filling a hole in research, trying to reach a certain demographic, marketing themselves as artists, or applying for jobs. This same motivation, beyond pleasing the teacher, has to guide all of their writing, so this is a good time to practice. And as their teacher, you want them to care about their writing because it makes your work that much more interesting.

Creating Subtext

Subtext is one of the most difficult concepts to grasp. I repeatedly ask my students, once we have taken into account the “Who cares?” factor, what the subtext is. For instance, a piece of writing could be about home, but what other themes emerge in the piece? A good piece of writing is always complex, just like a good movie or television show. There are many links, many story lines that come together within the main narrative. Nobody just writes a piece about home. Often, when they write about home, people are also writing about many other things such as loss, moving, change, growing up, familial relationships, rituals, traditions, and the importance of objects and spaces. Subtext is created by being specific about experiences and observations. The more specific a writer can be, the more effective the writing. In wholeheartedly trying to capture the detail and nuance of their own experiences, students are more likely to hit upon ideas that will resonate with a more diverse audience. That is because everyone can identify with a good story that has many themes running through it. The more well-defined themes the writer has, the more potential there is for a wider interested audience. One of my favorite pieces to share with students in the first days of class is “Maternal Connections” by Carolyn Ellis. Ellis is an ethnographer who has written a number of textbooks on the process of autoethnographic and ethnographic writing, as well as many first-person autoethnographic pieces. This particular piece is only four textbook pages long and very similar in size and scope to the types of assignments students will be doing. It is a master class in how much can be accomplished in a very short span of time (measured in both pages and experience). In this piece from her book Composing Ethnography, Ellis describes four nights taking care of her mother, who is ill and hospitalized. In it, she uses all of the elements you want students to understand how to use in a piece of autoethnography or personal writing. She includes brief dialogue to give her mother a voice, detailed descriptions, well-defined themes and subtext. The themes in the piece are somewhat mature and may not have been readily experienced by the students. Taking care of an older relative in an intimate way, the unpleasantness of illness and hospitalization, aging, the body, and confronting life choices involving having a family or remaining childless are all parts of the narrative. Although they are not things most students of traditional college age have experienced, a few will recognize them as familiar and all can imagine a future in which they will be confronted with many of the questions and themes that arise. Ellis’ writing is a great example of how being very specific to one’s own experiences can end up being more universal than a piece that is trying to appeal to everyone. Throughout, she builds up to questions about her own potential for motherhood and desire for it. Asking questions of herself in the text allows the reader to question the choice of motherhood. Ellis is able to accomplish a tremendous amount very quickly. She describes the experience:

Taking care of her feels natural, as though she is my child. The love and concern flowing between us feels like my mom and I are falling in love. The emotionality continues during the four days and nights I stay with her in the hospital. My life is devoted temporarily to her well-being. She knows it and is grateful. I am grateful for the experience. I do not mind that she is dependent on me. I am engrossed by our feeling, by the seemingly mundane but, for the moment, only questions that matter. Are you dizzy? In pain? Comfortable? Do you want to be pulled up in bed? Can’t you eat one more bite? Do you need to pee? Have gas? Want water? Prefer to sleep now? As I help with these events, I do not question their meanings, as I so often do about most things in my life.…Experiencing unconditional love for my mother makes me, for the moment, crave to feel it toward and from a child as well. Do I just want someone who will wash me when I’m 79? What if something is wrong with the baby? What about my career? Travel plans? Yet how can I omit this meaning-giving experience from my life? (242-3).

The difficulties and rewards of writing about her relationship with her mother have also been described and analyzed by Ellis. She considers the ethics of writing about her mother in “With Mother/With Child: A True Story.” This companion piece is a great way to introduce the necessity of considering the people you are writing about and allowing them to view pieces you plan to make public. While this piece is brutally honest, it is also very carefully considered by its author and its subject.

Writing the Self as a Character

In another one of my favorite readings to share in the first weeks of class, Philip Lopate describes obstacles facing the student writer of personal essays in “Writing Personal Essays: On the Necessity of Turning Oneself into a Character”:

…I am inclined to think that what stands in the way of most personal essays in not technique but psychology. The emotional preparedness, if you will, to be honest and open to exposure.

The student essayist is torn between two contrasting extremes:

“I am so weird that I could never tell on the page what is really, secretly going on in my mind.” “I am so boring, nothing ever happens to me out of the ordinary, so who would want to read about me?” (40)

This and a companion piece by Lopate that I will discuss are important because they encourage the student writer to think about herself as a topic of interest. Finding the self interesting and being able to write about the self as a theme are challenging for anyone. How often are we turned off by a piece because someone seems to have too high an opinion of herself? Or how often do we become frustrated because an author seems unable to understand his own circumstances and how they affect his interpretation? How often do we find people’s stories boring or irrelevant when socializing, or think we have nothing interesting to contribute about our own boring lives? Then there are the people who can make every day seem like an adventure, in which tales of buying groceries, riding the train, or getting a haircut all seem like the most interesting things you’ve ever heard. Some people who have survived plane crashes or accomplished extraordinary things still seem rather dull. Creating interest is all about choosing the right details and establishing voice.

Lopate says in his piece that both of the student writer’s contrasting extremes—”I am so weird” and “I am so boring”—reflect a lack of understanding that we are all inherently weird and normal. “In short, they (students) must be nudged to recognize that life remains a mystery—even one’s own so-called boring life. They must also be taught to recognize the charm of the ordinary: that daily life has nourished some of the most enduring essays” (40).

It is interesting, after reading this process piece, to have students read and examine Lopate’s “Portrait of My Body,” in which he describes his own features at length as a way to present himself as a character. Notably, while he is self-deprecating, Lopate is careful never really to say anything negative about himself. Each thing he points out as a flaw is later redeemed, leaving readers ultimately confused and feeling the ego need to engage in such an undertaking, with each aspect of a rather ordinary body being compared to a celebrity or author such as Sandy Koufax or Cesare Pavese. It is this fluctuation between narcissism and self-deprecation that is so fascinating and revealing. Some examples are charming, such as the aura a student describes seeing around his head, while some are off-putting, notably a few pages discussing his penis.

With statements such as “They claim that men who have long, long fingers also have lengthy penises. I can tell you with surety that my fingers are long and sensitive, the most perfect, elegant, handsome part of my anatomy,” (222) a vibrant discussion of how to write about the self is sure to follow. As Lopate says, most students find themselves at one of two extremes, immensely entertaining or terribly boring. In reality, most of us probably fall somewhere in between.

The Ellis and Lopate pieces are also interesting in considering the differences between nonfiction and fiction. If might be uncomfortable enough to read a piece describing intimate parts of anyone’s body, but to know that is supposed to represent the truth is an entirely different story. It is an important reminder that personal writing is a vulnerable task, one that lays us on the table to be seen and judged. Writers are not, however, passive victims in this process. They have to choose what they put out there and recognize they are discussing real people who are vulnerable and need to be treated with respect.

I often ask my students how they would feel if they knew someone had written a nonfiction piece about them for a class, or how the people they write about would feel if were given the pieces to read? Something that might initially seem like a good idea, in fact, may be hurtful to the subject, who can feel vulnerable or even humiliated by another’s characterization. That’s why the most important first step in writing anything in nonfiction and personal writing is to make the self vulnerable, to more fully understand what it feels like to be the focus of truthful scrutiny. Through this process, students can begin to understand how to use the tools they have at hand to guide readers to the conclusions they wish to reach while treating their subjects, including themselves, carefully and ethically.

Self-as-Character Assignment

We all love a good character, someone who is complex yet relatable, full of all of the human foibles we are aware of, who may act differently from what we could ever anticipate.

This is by far the hardest assignment of the semester and also your first major assignment. Unless you have been honing your persona in writing for many years, you will have a hard time with this piece.

For this assignment, you will need to write a self-portrait. There are many ways you can do this. You can identify a structural element that allows you to move through personality traits, use interesting qualities or amusing actions to form a story or create narrative story lines that let us see you at your best and worst. So much of writing this piece is about making choices. Lopate chose to write about himself using his body as a device to make different kinds of observations about his character and personality. Other writers, like Geeta Kothari, chose food to talk about themselves as characters.

Choose a device that you can use to explain yourself as a character. A device is something we will practice with in many of the writing assignments—a tool that allows you to tell a story in a logical way when you might not otherwise have been able to tell it organically in the structure of your narrative.

However you approach this piece, make sure to focus on yourself in an interesting way. In other words, for better or worse, make yourself a character we want to hear and care about.

This work will be shared with classmates during class discussion.

This is usually a breakthrough moment in class. Everyone, including the teacher, is made completely vulnerable at the same time as they present portraits of themselves for the group to hear and discuss. Before the sharing process, I ask students to take note of what stands out to them in other students’ narratives. The students and the teacher then share, without pause for comment, and the class has a follow-up discussion about what was noteworthy.

This exercise, including the sharing process, is important because students will begin to understand the parts of themselves that resonate with their peer audience and how they might use these elements to their advantage as they create their voice in other, longer essays. Usually this is the first time students have tried, perhaps outside of social media, to make themselves cohesive characters. Some will share their doubts and struggles, while others will celebrate their quirks and accomplishments. Developing an individual voice and a sense of self will be important for all of their other writing during the semester. By establishing themselves as figures of authority who are self-aware and have valuable perspectives, they will communicate more effectively with their intended audiences.

Additional Readings

When the class works on defining character, I like to include pieces that examine different elements of experience and memories that authors use to do so. These authors use everything from cultural experience to food and schooling to define important moments in their lives and character development.

I use Geeta Kothari’s “If you are what you eat, then what am I?” because it has an easily relatable topic with an unusual structure. Kothari uses a broken-up style, recounting a series of related instances involving food. Having grown up with a first-generation Indian mother who worked hard to make simple “American” food such a tuna salad, and having a meat-eating life partner, she finds herself constantly at odds with the food cultures around her. She recounts her own childhood experiences in traveling to India and her lack of interest in Indian cooking until she became an adult and tried to re-create memories of childhood. Kothari requires the reader to make her own connections by juxtaposing these related but different moments in time. This is both a stylistic choice and a stumble in the piece. I suggest students bridge the difficult territory of filling in the connections for their readers, rather than making the readers figure it out for themselves. Students will, however, readily relate to the significance of food in culture, memory, family structure and relationships.

In her piece “Talking in the New Land,” Edite Cunha draws on a lot of ideas that can be very inspiring for students. Having immigrated to the United States as a young child, she uses three main examples to show the challenges she faced. She begins this essay by talking about how her first teacher changed her name to “Americanize” it and demonstrates how names can identify us. Most students will be able to trace a connection to their own names, whether those names are inherited from relatives, have religious meaning, were inspired by love for a celebrity, or causeds problems because of spelling, pronunciation, or assumptions made by those who heard them. Cunha explores how as she a child she had to take care of very adult things on behalf of her parents, who were not as proficient in English as she. At ten she was trying to get money for the family and negotiating with a woman who wanted heirlooms she had left behind in the house Cunha’s family purchased from her. Her struggles with language and cultural identity as a child are obviously relevant for many young writers.

Although Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl” is a prose poem, it is a strong stylistic example of how character is and is not defined. In a series of directives, the main character is told how to do a variety of tasks and how not to do others. There are hardly any moments of pause, and the onslaught of advice is overwhelming. The voice of the girl is barely heard, yet at the end we get a clear picture of who the girl is supposed to be and who is there to guide her.

In a similar vein, Margaret Atwood uses lists and scenes in “The Female Body” to demonstrate the way the female body has been used for everything from advertising to patriotism. She reflects on the importance of the Barbie doll, the modifications women make to their bodies and the function of the male brain. This piece is quite aggressive and can spark a lot of good discussion about gender roles, how bodies define us, and how culture determines value.

These initial longer writing assignments will help students find a voice and consider the importance of intention and perspective in their writing. If they are able to master the exercises in Chapters 2 and 3 , they will be well prepared for the larger essay assignments in the remainder of the class.

We always watch students practicing on the basketball court and it really inspires us, because they practice so hard and for so long hours. I have seen many students who were unable to do a goal but their practice made them state level players.

Apart from the basketball court we also love playing with the leaves of the mango tree. Generally, we have to climb up a tree to reach its top, but the top portion of the tree can be easily touched from our classroom window. Apart from studies and friends, these things make my class decent and I love to be there.

There are different reasons to love something and the above reasons that help me to love my class. A classroom is a place where we learn and when we love being their then education seems interesting. I love my class, my teachers as well as my friends.

  • There is also a group of six girls who are famous for dancing, and they always perform on special occasions. Really 6B is a famous class for all types of activities. They also take part in the school choir group and also represent our school in different competitions.
  • There is a national level badminton player in the under 16 groups, he always makes us feel proud. He is an inspiration not only for the students of the primary section but also for the secondary wing.
  • A combination of such types of students makes us feel superior and we feel special. Everyone knows us that we are from that unique class in which each and every student is special.
  • My class teacher is another reason for loving my class; she is so polite and always inspires us to take part in several activities. She is our class teacher so whenever we have to go for practice, she allows us and takes our extra class in our free period and in this way, it becomes easy for us to concentrate on our studies.

It is always recommended to have good friends but when you have an artistic class then how can you stay behind from learning from them. Our principal and other teachers also admire them and our class is really one of the best in our school.

We have decorated our beaches like space ships and really our class looks like a space centre. The class board is decorated in such a way that it looks like a window of a space ship.

An Achievement Wall

There is an achievement wall in our class where students’ pics are posted. Every week different competitions are organized in our house meetings and those who win; their pictures are posted on this wall. It inspires other students to perform well and get space on this wall. Whenever there is any kind of inspection in our school, various teachers and principal sir visit our class and they admire those students as well as this idea of the achievement wall.

Weekend Activities

All of us celebrate our weekend in different ways, sometimes we visit a place, and sometimes we simply stay at home. So, those who spend their weekend at a new place or do something new are invited to express their views in a free period. It helps us to know those new places to visit next time and really a very new concept which is only followed in our class.

Social Media Touch-up

My classroom activities are updated on social media by our class teachers and this inspires us to perform well. In this way, we are also connected with many other people and I really like this concept.

Learning should be fun and my class is the best example of this. We celebrate together learn together and also enjoy ourselves together. Others should also learn from our class and all the credit goes to my class teacher. She is so good that our class became our favorite spot. Everything in the class inspires us and I proudly say that; that is my class. My class has also won the best class prize this year and every day we develop new ideas to make it the best learning place. Many students use to bunk the class but these changes also encourage them to stay in the class and learn new things.

A classroom is a space with which everyone can relate. It is a place for kids to learn, explore, and meet new friends. It is the first place where the kid goes and becomes social. Writing an essay on my classroom in English will allow kids to explore their inner emotional connections with their classroom. It will also enhance their observational skills, allowing them to see and scrutinise the details of the space where they spend the most creative time of the day. It will be a fun writing activity and a learning one too.

Teaching Writing With Google Classroom

When it comes to teaching writing, there is one thing I could not survive without: Google Classroom. Early on in my teaching career, I even went rogue and used Google Classroom when I was supposed to be religiously using my school’s other LMS. (Whoops! Anyone else who hated My Big Campus?) I used Classroom before my students had Chromebooks, back in the old computer lab days. I would jokingly tell my teacher friends that “Google was taking over the world” and that we would eventually go Google. Maybe I was a little obsessed, but we did go Google! And once you go Google, you can’t go back. (Trust me…I tried. And I resigned.)

But seriously, Google Classroom makes it ridiculously easy to streamline your writing instruction. And with the new normal of remote learning, Classroom is more important now than ever. Admittedly, I don’t have much experience with other platforms, and I am biased, but Google Classroom will help you make the most of distance learning, especially when it comes to teaching writing. Not only will Classroom improve your writing instruction, but it will help you stay connected to students throughout the entire writing process.

Google Classroom is intuitive enough that you figure out the basics on your own (assigning work, posting materials, grading, etc), but you can really maximize the platform with a few tips and tricks. Teaching writing will never be easy, but it can be much more manageable with the help of good old Google. Whether you’re brand new to Google Classroom or a techie teacher who is figuring out how the heck to teach during this time, here are 10 practical tips for teaching writing remotely:

1. MONITOR STUDENT PROGRESS WITH GOOGLE CLASSROOM & GOOGLE DOCS

Instead of assigning an essay and hoping for the best when it’s deadline time, you can use Google Classroom & Docs to monitor students’ progress throughout the entire writing process. The next time you want to assign an essay, create a template for the assignment in Google docs. It can be as simple as instructions and text that says “Type here.” You can even set it up with the right formatting (font size, double-spacing, MLA header) if you’re feeling generous. Then, assign that doc on Google Classroom and select the “Make a copy for each student” option. Selecting this option is crucial because it will create individual copies for every single student.

This way, you will be able to see students’ writing progress in real time. If a student is writing, you can simply open up their doc and watch them type. Students’ docs live in their Google drives and your drive, so you can’t lose anything. Everything is already organized in Google drive folders for you, which is a blessing for Type-B teachers like me. You can leave comments and even use the Chat feature to instantly message students as they write. While it’s not as ideal as communicating with students face-to-face in a classroom, it’s definitely the next best thing.

2. PROVIDE FEEDBACK VIA GOOGLE DOC COMMENTS

THIS is the real reason I went rogue back in the day. THIS is why once you go Google, you can’t go back. Once you have the ability to give students instantaneous feedback at every step of the writing process, you’ll never be able to teach writing the same way again. The more feedback you can give students during the writing process, the more they will grow as writers. More feedback also means less time writing comments on final drafts. Win-win! To give feedback via comments on Google docs, simply select (highlight) the text you want to comment on, and then select the plus sign speech bubble icon that should appear in the right margin. As students view your comments and make the necessary revisions, they can “resolve” your comments and effectively check each edit off their list.

I always try to give as much feedback as I can, especially in the earlier phases of the writing process. So I have students brainstorm and submit topic proposal docs, draft different versions of their thesis statements, and send in their topic sentences to make sure they support their thesis.

Feedback is my number #1 priority in the earliest stages of teaching writing, because I want my students to have a successful foundation for the rest of the process. Before I “release” my students to really, really write (as in draft their entire essay), they have already received lots of feedback from me. The best part? It’s all documented…so if weeks later, I’m grading an essay and thinking, “I know I told this student to revise their thesis,” I can quickly check the comment history.

3. SCAFFOLD THE WRITING PROCESS WITH MINILESSONS, GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS, AND OTHER RESOURCES

The writing process is already daunting for students, so it’s even more intimidating in the virtual setting. To make writing more manageable, scaffold the process by breaking it down into smaller chunks/steps. Here’s how I support my students when I’m teaching writing:

  • Giving students an outline to help them structure their writing. This helps me give students feedback before they really dig into the rest of the writing process.
  • Posting mini-lessons for each step/element of the writing process. I usually provide these in slideshow form AND screencast video form. ( Loom is my favorite tool for creating screencast videos.) I provide students with writing workshop minilessons on everything from crafting a thesis statement to selecting strong & thorough textual evidence.
  • Offering students additional graphic organizers and resources to use if they need them . These resources, like the thesis statement “fill in the blank” organizer pictured below, help scaffold the writing process for students.
  • Familiarizing students with the rubric I will use to assess their final drafts. This means posting it on Classroom, explaining it, referring to it during minilessons, providing feedback that gives students an idea of where they are on the rubric, asking students to self-evaluate throughout the writing process, and making sure all expectations are 100% clear.

4. CURATE & ORGANIZE RESOURCES WITH HYPERDOCS

It’s easy for students to become overwhelmed with all of the resources you are offering them. Even though students have the entire internet at their fingertips, they don’t always know how to use it. That’s where hyperdocs come in. Like its name suggests, a hyperdoc is a document of hyperlinks to other documents, resources, videos, websites, etc. Depending on how you use it, a hyperdoc can function as a self-paced lesson module or a resource hub. When it comes to writing workshop, I use hyperdocs for the latter, linking up all of the minilessons, videos, graphic organizers, and outside resources students might need throughout the writing process. I carefully curate resources to help every type of learner at every step of the writing process.

In this way, hyperdocs help me scaffold and differentiate for students. Not to mention, they answer students’ questions and free up more of my time to provide valuable feedback. I love hyperdocs because everything is in one place, and anytime students have questions, you can direct them to the hyperdoc. (Eventually, you’ll train them to head straight to the hyperdoc when they need some help.) A hyperdoc is a great way to accommodate all of your learners and support them as they work through the writing process. 5. USE DAILY “CHECK INS” TO SUPPORT EVERY STUDENT, EVERY DAY

Checking in with every student is challenging enough in the traditional classroom, but it can feel even more overwhelming in the virtual setting. But there’s an easy solution that will allow you to check in with every student, every day of writing workshop: A daily check-in. You can do this via Google forms OR Google Classroom questions. (I prefer the latter.) I assign these as exit tickets at the end of each writing workshop day, and the check-in reads the same almost every day: What did you accomplish today? What questions do you have, and how can I help you?

If students want specific feedback on their writing, I encourage them to give me specific instructions. It takes some time and practice to move students away from the “Can you check my writing and see if it’s good?” questions to the “Can you check my thesis to see if it clearly previews my claims?” questions. But within a few days, you’ll see students asking specific, purposeful questions. These simple check-ins will give you a chance to help the student who need it the most. They’ll help you provide more precise, helpful, and efficient feedback for students.

While you can easily create a check-in Google form, I prefer using Google Classroom questions because I can easily reply to students, whether it’s with a general “I left a comment on your doc!” or “It looks great; keep up the good work.” Helping students is even easier when you have a hyperdoc of resources, because you can direct students to the appropriate minilesson and post the link in the comments on Classroom.

6. ASSIGN CHECKPOINTS TO BREAK UP THE WRITING PROCESS

In addition to daily check-ins, I also like to assign formative checkpoints for essential parts of the writing process. Once again, I do this to a) scaffold the writing process and b) provide meaningful formative feedback along the way. Here are examples of various checkpoints I use:

  • Topic Proposal: Students submit a topic proposal via a Google Classroom question. I provide feedback and approve their topics by replying to their submissions.
  • Thesis Statement Checkpoint: After rounds of drafting and revising a thesis statement, students submit their thesis through a Google Classroom question. Once again, I offer comments in the replies. After reviewing my feedback, I ask students to revise their thesis and post it as a reply. This way, I can visually see how they have taken my feedback into account and revised their thesis.
  • Outline Checkpoint: After completing an outline on a Google doc, I ask students to copy/paste the “bare bones” of their outline (thesis, claims, and one piece of evidence per claim) in a Google Classroom question. I usually use a rubric to assess the outline and provide formative feedback. Students do not begin the rest of the essay until I have approved their outlines in this way.

7. ADD IN OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEER FEEDBACK

Writing can feel like a lonely, tedious process, especially in the online setting. Give your students the opportunity to connect with peers and offer feedback. Yes, it can be done online! Here are a few different ways to incorporate meaningful peer feedback remotely:

  • For focused peer feedback on a specific part of an essay (such as a thesis, topic sentence, even an entire paragraph), I love using a Google Classroom question. For example, I will ask students to submit their thesis statement via a question, and then I will have them give feedback to 2 of their peers. Sometimes, I will give students the option to pick a specific part of their paper and ask for feedback on that. For example, a student could post their introduction and ask their peers if it’s engaging and clear. Or they could post a claim, piece of evidence, and commentary, and ask their peers if their evidence and commentary is strong enough to defend the claim.
  • For peer feedback on an entire essay, I often ask students to share their Google doc with a peer and require that they provide feedback via the comments or even the rubric. To structure this, I give students a checklist, the rubric, or other guidelines.

No matter how you facilitate peer feedback, the most important part is giving students some structure and guidelines. Instead of just asking them to give comments, tell them what to look for. Give them your rubric and allow them to familiarize themselves with the language of instruction/assessment as they peer-edit.

8. SCHEDULE VIRTUAL OFFICE HOURS OR CONFERENCES

In my opinion, one of the most rewarding parts of teaching writing is simply talking to students about their writing. While there is a certain magic in face-to-face writing conferences, you can still find a way to “meet” with students in the online setting. Depending on your district’s guidelines, video conferencing through Zoom or Google Hangouts may be an option. If it’s not, you can still arrange virtual meetings by scheduling times to “meet” on a student’s document at the same time. This way, you can communicate in real time through comments or the Chat feature (if your district has this enabled; some may not). It’s certainly not as good as the real thing, but at least you’ll be in the same doc at the same time, looking at the same piece of student writing.

To create a virtual sign-up sheet like the one pictured below, create a Google form with your time slots in check-boxes. Then, use the add-on Choice Eliminator so that slots are removed from the form when students claim them. For a slightly easier option, simply create an editable Google doc and allow students to sign up directly on the document.

9. ENCOURAGE THE USE OF OTHER TECH TOOLS

Even with all of the wonderful technology at your disposal, you can only do so much for students. Foster some independence by encouraging students to utilize the various other tech tools that exist outside of Google Classroom and your arsenal of resources. Learning to maximize the internet’s resources is a skill that will serve students well when they attend college, join the workforce, and enter the “real world.” While there are countless options out there, here are my favorites:

  • Grammarly is a Google Chrome “writing assistant” that will help students understand and correct their grammar and spelling mistakes. Once Grammarly is activated, students will see suggestions and explanations as they type in docs.
  • Diigo is a convenient bookmarking website and extension that allows users to curate, organize, and annotate various sources. It’s especially helpful for research writing or projects where students need to keep track of a body of articles.
  • Kami is a helpful tool that allows students to annotate PDFs right in their browser. It integrates with Google Classroom, and the premium subscription is currently free due to COVID-19.
  • Read&Write is a Google Chrome extension that can help scaffold the writing process with its text-to-speech and speech-to-text tools. While it is a paid extension, students can access it free for 30 days. (FYI: Teachers can receive a free premium subscription, but obviously that doesn’t help students at home.)

10. ASK STUDENTS TO REFLECT & SELF-EVALUATE

Don’t let the writing process abruptly end when students attach their doc and click submit on Google Classroom! Instead, facilitate thoughtful reflection and connect with your students one more time by asking them to self-evaluate. In my experience, this works well with a Google form or a rubric copied/pasted at the end of the essay document. If you feel disconnected from your students, this exercise will help you stay connected AND it will give you meaningful data that goes beyond what any rubric or grade could tell you. 

When I ask students to reflect, I keep it simple by giving them a copy of the rubric I use to assess them. I ask them to give themselves scores in the different categories, justify those ratings, and then reflect on the writing process. I also give them a chance to tell me what I could have done to better support them and express any other concerns about the writing unit. My students’ reflections always teach me more than any other kind of data I could collect and analyze.

BONUS TIP: SHARE OR “PUBLISH” STUDENT WRITING

The act of writing can feel isolating, and even more so in the online setting. Don’t forget to find a way to publish student writing and celebrate the last (but often forgotten) phase of the writing process. Publishing doesn’t have to be as formal as it sounds; even the simple act of sharing one’s work and connecting with fellow writers will go a long way in the virtual environment. Thankfully, technology gives us plenty of options for sharing & publishing student writing. Here are just a few ideas:

  • Share student writing on a class blog or Google Site. (Or better yet, have students create their own sites and update them throughout the process).
  • Invite students to share their work via a Padet or Flipgrid (video responses).
  • Create a virtual gallery walk, or compilation of student work, via Google docs, slides, or forms.
  • Combine student submissions into an e-book, and post it on your LMS. (It’s as simple as combining all docs, adding a nice cover, and converting the file to a PDF).

Whatever you do to share, celebrate, or publish student writing, I guarantee it will help you and your students stay connected and feel rewarded for your hard work!

You have given me some great ideas in this post. My school uses Canvas, and I integrate multiple Google features. The one draw back that I have had in the past is with rubrics and grading essays in Google Docs. While not perfect, Canvas is easier for me. However, can you explain how you grade essays using rubrics in Google. Has Google added a grading feature that I do not know about? Thank you in advance for your reply.

Yes! So there are a few different ways to do it. I like copying & pasting the rubric at the bottom of a template doc that I assign to “make a copy for every student” on Classroom. There are also extensions like Orange Slice, Doctopus, and Goobric that automate the process a bit more. But Classroom has added a rubric feature; it’s relatively new and I haven’t had a chance to use it yet but I know teachers love it!

Hi. I am HATING teaching , and I do teach writing, because I cannot get Google Classroom. One thing I am looking for though, is how can I show them how to write in real time? Like doing a 4 square with them? Is there such a program online?

Hi there! Teaching is definitely tough when it’s facilitated online (which is what I’m assuming you’re doing). Even if you don’t have Google Classroom, you could use a view-only Google doc to model how you’re writing in real time. All you would need to do is set the sharing settings to view only (meaning students cannot edit) and then share the document link with your students.

She shuffles our seats every week so that we make new friends.

She is democratic. We get to select our representatives. The representative of the class is changed every month. We deliver a speech highlighting all the qualities that make us unique and worthy of the post. She helps us in figuring out these qualities. Our class always secure prizes in the morning assembly for the most well-mannered section. We are proud to have her as our mentor.

She tells us that there is always some room for improvement and helps us become better persons and students. She is the best teacher we have had and we wish to have her again as our class teacher next year.

Classroom writing instruction, why integrate writing into a course.

  • Students deepen their knowledge of course material by writing. Whether reflecting on what they’ve learned, composing a question, or connecting knowledge to lived experience, writing extends students’ engagement of a subject.
  • If students have had a chance to explore the course material through writing, they are likely to feel more invested in it, to be better able to discuss it, and to retain what they’ve learned.
  • Reading our students’ writing—whether a paragraph describing a lecture or a research paper—gives us a heightened sense of their grasp on the course concepts. This, in turn, allows us to teach to their needs.
  • Writing gives students practice in participating in the discipline. Rather than simply testing their acquisition of knowledge, writing provides an opportunity to analyze, challenge and contribute to existing ideas.

Why are my students poor writers?

We’ve found that instructors often conflate “poor writing” with issues of usage and grammar. While it may seem that complaints of student error are unique to our times—a product of text-messaging and media-saturation—the complaint is nothing new, nor is the percentage of errors on the rise. Robert Connors and Andrea Lunsford conducted a study comparing types and frequency of error of contemporary students with studies done from 1917-1930. They found that, in fact, the rate of error (about two per hundred words) remained consistent over time. What has changed, though, is what constitutes an error, which depends on current standards of language.

Our students will be better served if we are transparent about what constitutes good writing in our discipline and if we are clear about how to define error. John Bean offers some observations about error that may also help us to understand it more complexly:

  • “Even in an error-laden essay, an actual count of the errors reveals that there are many more correct sentences than flawed ones.” Bean reminds us that our “psychology of reading” shapes our location of error in student papers. Individual teachers tend to notice different errors. If we are looking for particular errors, they are highly visible to us.
  • “What constitutes ‘error’ really involves stylistic choices—issues of rhetorical effectiveness and grace rather than right-or-wrong adherence to rules.” If we find wordiness or passive voice abounding in our papers, rather than approaching these as errors, we might devote time to instructing students on why these are not appropriate in a given rhetorical context (the lab report, the book review).
  • “Errors in student writing increase with greater cognitive difficulty.” As students enter new academic territory, other skills may temporarily regress. By building in multiple drafts, students will have the chance to correct these errors and further their thinking.
  • “Teachers can expect to see sentence problems in first drafts and on essay exams.” Students tend to produce less error-ridden prose when they have opportunities to draft, receive feedback, and revise. In the case of the essay exam, not only are students writing under pressure, but they are engaging in a cognitively challenging task. (See also “How do I improve writing on essay exams?”)
  • “Traditional procedures for grading and marking student papers may exacerbate the problem.” Well-intentioned teachers often tell us that to improve students’ grammar, they mark every error they find. Not only is this time-consuming (and frustrating) for the instructor, it can be counterproductive. Instead, try marking one or two patterns of error you see, and provide an explanation of why a rule has been violated. Then, let the student correct his/her own text—she will learn far more by doing so.
  • “Student errors are systematic and classifiable.” That is to say, there is a difference between errors that occur in a pattern in a student’s paper—which demonstrates confusion about a rule—and a “mistake” made out of haste or lack of proofreading. If you find an error made consistently throughout a piece of writing, call attention to it and help the student understand why it isn’t correct. If the issue is a mistake, you might emphasize the need for editing, providing students strategies of how to do so.

How do I encourage my students to revise?

Many of us, our students included, carry around the idea that good writers, real writers, get it right the first time. As instructors, we need to help students understand (and remind ourselves, too) that good writers spend much more time revising than they do drafting.

Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts. You need to start somewhere. Start by getting something—anything—down on paper. A friend of mine says that the first draft is the down draft—you just get it down. The second draft is the up draft—you fix it up. You try to say what you have to say more accurately. And the third draft is the dental draft, where you check every tooth to see if it’s loose or cramped or decayed, or even, God help us, healthy. Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird (p26)

If we want students to move from the down draft to the dental draft, though, we need to support the writing process. Here are some ways you can do this:

  • Create writing assignments that leave room for students to explore an issue or problem of genuine interest . If the writing is driven by inquiry—rather than providing a pre-determined answer—they will be more apt to revise.
  • Make clear to your students that revision is different from editing . Help them understand that revision involves not only tweaking the text, but also re-examining the ideas within the text. You might provide them examples of a text at different stages of the revision process.
  • Build time into your course to accommodate the writing process . You might set one deadline for first drafts, and then leave time in class for students to share texts and offer feedback to one another in small groups. If you can’t spare the class time, encourage them to visit the Writing Center (Love Library N203), where they can talk through their process with a consultant. Leave adequate time between assigning the paper and its deadline for genuine revision to take place.
  • Give your students’ papers the majority of your comments while they are in process, not when the final version has been turned in . That said, try not make your comments so extensive that the student feels overwhelmed. Focus your response on one or two central goals for revision, so that the student has an achievable goal.
  • Don’t forget to point out what is working in the draft . This gives the student language for what she is doing well, so that she can repeat it.
  • Require students to submit all drafts along with their final copy . This will give you (and the student) a sense of how your students have progressed to the final version of the assignment.
  • Consider asking students to write a “process account,” in which they document the rationale that shaped the changes made in their revision process . If you choose to include attention to process in their final grade, a process account will help you evaluate this component.
  • Model revision . Consider letting students see a piece that you have revised for publication, from an early articulation to a mid-process draft to final version. This will give them evidence that professional writers do, indeed, revise.

How can I promote improved writing on essay exams?

Essay exams can offer many potential benefits to students: they give students an opportunity to synthesize material, to learn to think and compose quickly, and to use course material to make arguments. Here are some strategies that will help the learning potential of essay exams.

  • Teach your students how to write essay exams . Often we tell students we value “clear” writing or that they must provide “coherent” responses. Since no student sets out to write in an unclear or incoherent manner, this advice is usually ineffective. Instead, provide students examples of exams that are exceptional, average, and poor. Help them to understand why each received the grade it did.
  • Be clear about whether your grading will include usage, grammar, etc . If so, be sure to give students adequate time to look over their answers and make revisions.
  • Allow students to practice, either writing in class or taking a practice exam as homework . This gives the student another opportunity to see what you value in an answer in why. In addition, it gives students another opportunity to learn by writing.
  • Call for thesis-governed writing . This will increase the chances that students write a succinct, clear essay. If the question uses verbs such as “discuss,” “analyze,” “compare and contrast,” students tend to stray from the task. If you use imperatives, make sure the task is well contextualized. For instance, “What are the pros and cons of using pesticides to control mosquitoes?” is clearer than “Discuss the use of pesticides in controlling mosquitoes” (Bean 192).

How do I incorporate writing into a large lecture course?

While it may be impossible to require a course of 100 students to write research papers, incorporating writing into your lecture course is still possible. Below are ideas that allow students to write-to-learn that are also manageable for the instructor.

  • Develop guided journals to accompany your lectures . You might ask students to write short responses (a couple of paragraphs will do) to link lecture information to their own experiences, to apply it other contexts, or to critique or question the ideas presented.
  • Incorporate writing moments into the lecture . You might stop your lecture and ask students to write for several moments about how the presented material interests, challenges, or confuses them. Invite a couple of students to share their responses. This will facilitate both learning through writing and dialogue between you and the students.
  • Invite student questions in writing . At the end of your lecture, you might invite students to compose a question about or response to the material. This will give you a sense of how students are interacting with the knowledge presented.

What’s the difference between high-stakes and low-stakes writing? Why does it matter?

High-stakes writing bears the pressure of a grade, of passing or failing a class, of being allowed or denied entrance into a program. Most of the writing composed in the college classroom is high-stakes, because students know it will be evaluated.

While high-stakes writing is certainly important, students also need opportunities for low-stakes or exploratory writing. Exploratory writing allows students to think on paper, to raise questions, to present uncertainties, or to grapple with course materials without the pressure of a grade. For this reason, it serves as an important precursor to higher-stakes writing, because it enables students to discover ideas, to try out several directions, and eventually, to discover a clearer focus.  Unfortunately, as John Bean notes, “college students do not [typically] realize the value of exploratory writing and are not given nearly enough opportunities for doing it” (98).

The classroom is the heart of every student. It is an unforgettable place that we remember for the rest of our lives. Classroom makes us what we are in our material life. It has a positive impact on lifelong learning. This article discusses the classroom and its significance for children and students.

A classroom is defined as a place where a group of students study in classes from a particular teacher in a particular subject. Classes are often found in schools, colleges and universities where a variety of skills and subjects are taught to students in a variety of subjects and disciplines. It is a place where all students share the same signs and symbols. My classroom is attractive, open, and airy, with two wide windows and a large door. It has four ceiling fans, and a large board.

The interior walls of my classroom are beautifully decorated with different designs. There are charts, pictures of flowers, trees and a map of the world on its walls. Downstairs, there is a large veranda and a large grassy area with more than a hundred flower pots filled with different colours. The scent of flowers spread attractive fragrance in my classroom. After a Morning assembly as we rush to our classroom, I always sit at a desk near the window because I watch the cold air flowing in the morning. The beauty of nature enriches my mind and makes me feel comfortable.

To the northeast of my classroom is an administrative center. In the management section of our school there are two writers who prepare our result cards and progress cards. My classroom is very quiet, the unusual environment has a noise found in my classroom. In front of the board is a teacher’s chair and more than 20 student benches. At each desk two students can sit comfortably.

Next to the black board is a tail from where the section is moved. All of us students sit facing the board where we are assigned a lesson and a diary. Our teachers at the end of the class write their homework on the board. After a month all the pictures and charts on the walls of the section are changed with pictures of the outstanding personality of our nation who served the nation selflessly.

There are 45 students in my class, we all live as a family. There are twenty girls in my classroom,  all girls are more active and smarter than us boys. Girls always finish homework on time, while the boys often forget to do our homework. Some students are very sharp, God is gifted and different and some are smart and some are stupid. I belong to the category of smart students. We all help each other learn. We keep our classroom organized and clean. Two dust bins are placed in the corners of the classroom where we throw cloths and paper.

All the teachers are loving and kind, the teacher in my classroom is very friendly. He teaches us English and History. All of the professors are dedicated, talented, and knowledgeable. My classroom is the only place where we chat and make full of fun. During the break we share lunch and usually have fun. At various national, international and cultural events we decorate our classroom and try our best to make our classroom more beautiful than any other school classroom. Our school is famous all over the city, it’s very big. At any given time, our school can accommodate over three thousand students. Our school is known for its cleanliness and teaching technology.

Our classroom is the best class in our school, our classroom has received many awards and rewards for its cleanliness. All the teachers in the school praised the cleanliness of our classroom.

My classroom is a quiet place. I love my class because we all live and work as a family and help each other heart and soul. The floor tiles in my classroom look clean and tidy. AI Can Transform the Classroom Just Like the Calculator

AI can better education, not threaten it, if we learn some lessons from the adoption of the calculator into the classroom

The rapidly expanding use of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence tools has fired up a fervent debate in academia. On one side of the debate, professors and teachers are concerned over the future of postsecondary learning and threats to traditional disciplines, especially within the humanities , as headlines warn of “The End of the English Major.” Nevertheless, AI is here and about a third of teachers, from kindergarten through high school, report using it in the classroom, according to a recent survey . While many of our colleagues in higher education policy, science policy, and university design criticize or dismiss generative AI, we are instead decidedly optimistic it will follow a pattern seen in other technologies that have enhanced educational access and success. We believe that when new technologies are embraced, core aspects of learning, including curriculum, instruction and assessment, can be revolutionized. We are optimistic about AI, but we don’t see it as a hero. Students and instructors are still the heroes of human learning, even when AI is involved. History supports this view. From the Gutenberg press to online math classes, technologies that improve access to quality learning opportunities are routinely dismissed by critics and skeptics, especially by those who hold the reins in the classroom. Consider the calculator. A survey in the mid-1970s carried out by Mathematics Teacher magazine found that 72 percent of respondents—mainly teachers and mathematicians—opposed equipping seventh graders with calculators. Highlighted in 1975 in Science News , this survey mirrored the broader discourse of the Sesame Street era concerning the introduction of calculators into classrooms, just when costs were approaching the point that some schools could afford to have up to one calculator per student. Calculators met resistance from educators who feared an overdependence on technology would erode students’ math skills. As one professor observed of students and calculators, “I have yet to be convinced that handing them a machine and teaching them how to push the button is the right approach. What do they do when the battery runs out?”It is easy to see how the case of the calculator mirrors current concerns about generative AI. The College Board made a similar argument in an article published last spring that mused about the “ Great Calculator Panic of the 1980s and ‘90s. ” Critics of AI in the classroom argue that students might never learn to write or respond to written prompts independently if they can simply ask an AI to do it for them. The hypothetical scenario where the Internet or servers are down raises fears that students would be unable to write a simple sentence or compose a basic five-paragraph essay.Narrow arguments over essay integrity and potential declines in learning quality miss the broader perspective on how this technology could positively reshape curriculum, instruction and assessment.

In classrooms, technology, curriculum, instruction, and assessment evolve together to reshape education. We see this historically with calculators and are now witnessing it unfold in real time with the emergence of generative AI tools.

The introduction of calculators into classrooms didn't set in motion the demise of mathematics education; instead, it significantly broadened its scope while inspiring educators and academics to rethink the educational limits of mathematics. This shift fostered a climate ripe for innovation. Looking at today’s math landscape and what existed in the 1970s, we would be hard-pressed to consider the past superior to the present, to say nothing of the future. Today, high school students use (and more importantly, comprehend) graphing calculators and computers better than undergraduate engineering students in university labs could only a generation ago. Today’s math learning environment is observably more dynamic, inclusive and creative than it was before ubiquitous access to calculators. In a parallel vein, generative AI promises to extend this kind of innovation in critical thinking and the humanities, making it easier for students to grasp foundational concepts and explore advanced topics with confidence. AI could allow for customized learner support —adapting to the individual pace and learning style of each student, helping to make education more inclusive and tailored to specific needs. Generative AI can better the humanities by making reading and writing more accessible to diverse students, including those with learning disabilities or challenges with traditional writing methods.Just as calculators led us to reevaluate legacy teaching methods and embrace more effective pedagogical approaches, generative AI calls for a similar transformation in how we approach assignments, conduct classes and assess learning. It will shift us from viewing the college essay as the pinnacle of learning to embracing wider creative and analytical exercises, ones facilitated by AI tools. The successful integration of calculators into math education serves as a blueprint for the adoption of generative AI across the curriculum. By designing assignments with the expectation that generative AI will enhance rather than shortcut them, educators can foster learning that values creativity, critical thinking and efficient study. This shift necessitates a broader, more adaptable approach to teaching and learning, one that recognizes the potential of technology to elevate educational standards and broaden access to knowledge.

Preparing Double Spacing in Word Before You Start Writing Your Essay

There are specific formatting standards that students are generally required to follow when submitting their essays, one of which includes double-spacing in Word. As I will demonstrate to you on how to do double spacing in Word you will learn to maintain consistent formatting throughout your document.

I'll demonstrate using WPS Office because it is a free suite and ultimately the best option for students. It's compatible with all Word document versions and can even convert your papers to PDF without losing formatting, allowing you to follow along regardless of whether you are using Windows, Mac, or Android.

Using the Home ribbon

Let's take a look at the first method, which is available in the home tab and is relatively quicker to perform.

Step 1 : Open WPS Office on your system. Remember, WPS Office is available for both MAC and Windows, making it an easier option to work with.

Step 2 : Now, let's create a new document. Click on "New" in the left panel.

Step 3 : Next, click on "Docs" located in the left panel, followed by "Blank", to create a new blank document on WPS Office.

Step 4 : You will now have a fresh new document open on WPS Writer. To format our document to double space, click on "Home" in the ribbon menu.

Step 5 : Next, click on the "Line Spacing" icon, which is a double arrow with horizontal lines.

Step 6 : Now, the line spacing option is available in the drop-down menu. Click on "2.0" to set the line spacing as double.

And that's it! Your new document has now been formatted for both your APA style essays or MLA style. Using WPS Office has its benefits. It provides software compatible for both Mac and Windows, which reduces the likelihood of glitches or crashes compared to Microsoft Word, which is not compatible with MacOS.

Additionally, it allows users to save their files on the cloud. So, if you need to make changes to your document on the go, they are easily available. Plus, if you need to work on the go, you might be using your handheld device, and luckily, WPS Office is available on both Android and iOS for free.

Using the Context menu

The second option involves opening a few other dialog boxes, but the special feature of this method is that if you're formatting your document from scratch, you can also format indentation or alignment using the same steps.

Classroom Behavior and Culturally Diverse Essay

Issues related to classroom behavior encourage a kindergarten teacher to explore factors that cause misconduct as well as techniques that can be utilized in handling such behaviors. Furthermore, the teacher seeks to identify some techniques for solving these problems before they escalate to something complex. Educational scholars note that instructors are not well prepared to handle culturally diverse actions.

Research shows that teachers can eliminate class disruptions by solving behavioral issues fully. Moreover, analysts posit that teachers need to create an environment that enables students to learn comfortably. This is achieved through reflecting on instructional practices, interacting with students and most importantly, responding to the behavior of students in an appropriate way.

It is established through experience and research that youngsters feel involved in class activities when their opinions and suggestions are accepted. Therefore, children are to be encouraged to voice their opinions and thoughts during lessons.

This is made possible by modifying their wrong answers from students into something reasonable. A teacher rejects a student’s answer indirectly that is, by claiming that it was not what was required. Through this technique, each student attempts to answer a question thus minimizing disruption in class.

As indicated in the comprehensive classroom management manuscript, whatever a teacher selects as a classroom management skill or technique must side with his/her own personality and preference (Jones, & Jones, 2007). This concept is encouraging although it does not apply uniformly to both American and Japanese teaching system. Although the goals are similar, the overall outcomes are different.

American system focuses on cognitive and academic performance while the Japanese system centers on encircling competences that create overall personality of students. This could comprise of student’s physical, moral, social and aesthetic development (Jones, & Jones, 2007).

Teachers utilize behavioral approach frequently in managing classroom issues. With the help of positive behavior support provided in the manuscript, the teacher attempts to help students monitor their behavior. The teacher further encourages students to develop new behaviors by giving them relevant instructions and equipping them with problem solving skills (Jones, & Jones, 2007).

The teacher should engage students in conversations and remind them that they have to make sound choices both at home and school. The teacher specifically reminds students to complete their homework on time, hand in assignments immediately, follow school rules and interact with others peacefully.

The teacher should conduct further research to learn more about student behavior. Scholars postulate that rewarding desired behaviors and punishing inappropriate ones lead to achievement of desired goals.

The teacher reveals to students the kinds of punishments and rewards available for them. Students behaving well are rewarded with things such as treasure chest, extra free centers and run errands. This encourages the naughty ones to reform.

Although the technique is 90% efficient, much needs to be done to improve student’s social behavior. Individualized support should be provided in order to assist poorly performing students improve on their behavior. To realize individualized assistance, a partnership should be established between the school and the community (Jones, & Jones, 2007).

Surprisingly, the technique formulated by the teacher is concomitant to the tenets of behavioral approach. This was confirmed after the teacher had finished marking classroom management self-inventory sheet. It is true that reward system goes hand in hand with the provisions of Comprehensive Classroom management manuscript. The technique is the most effective in dealing with children from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The technique was experimented with children from the military settings, low-income backgrounds and single parent family. This shows that the technique does not discriminate children based on either social status or ethnic background. Some students come to class hungry, with low self-esteem.

Others have bad moods because their parents exercise militaristic rules. Children in such families have no independence because their parents decide for them what to do. Some students are breadwinners of their families meaning that they take care of themselves and may be their siblings.

Therefore, school environment must promote egalitarianism and independent learning. Supporters of behaviorism approach advocate for adoption of reward system in solving classroom issues. Good behaviors are appreciated while bad ones are punished. Even though sanctions vary, they must be helpful to students.

For instance, a teacher instills mannerism by offering favors to the most loyal student, such as allowing the student to check the teacher’s mailbox and running an errand. The quiet student is given an opportunity to use the library after lessons. The success of teaching methods depends on the student’s stimulus and response. Each student should therefore be encouraged to make efforts to change his/her behaviors.

Benefits of behaving in an orderly manner should be explained to students and if possible, with illustrations. Behavior change is a complex process that should incorporate the whole society.

Behaving decently both at home and school strengthens student’s academic performance. In other words, both teachers and parents have a role to play in shaping student’s behavior. However, teachers are in a better position because they have authority.

Uri Berliner resigned from NPR on Wednesday saying he could not work under the new CEO Katherine Maher. He cautioned that he did not support calls to defund NPR.

NPR senior business editor Uri Berliner resigned this morning, citing the response of the network's chief executive to his outside essay accusing NPR of losing the public's trust.

"I am resigning from NPR, a great American institution where I have worked for 25 years," Berliner wrote in an email to CEO Katherine Maher. "I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism. But I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems at NPR I cite in my Free Press essay."

NPR and Maher declined to comment on his resignation.

The Free Press, an online site embraced by journalists who believe that the mainstream media has become too liberal, published Berliner's piece last Tuesday. In it, he argued that NPR's coverage has increasingly reflected a rigid progressive ideology. And he argued that the network's quest for greater diversity in its workforce — a priority under prior chief executive John Lansing – has not been accompanied by a diversity of viewpoints presented in NPR shows, podcasts or online coverage.

Later that same day, NPR pushed back against Berliner's critique.

"We're proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories," NPR's chief news executive, Edith Chapin, wrote in a memo to staff . "We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world."

Yet Berliner's commentary has been embraced by conservative and partisan Republican critics of the network, including former President Donald Trump and the activist Christopher Rufo.

Rufo is posting a parade of old social media posts from Maher, who took over NPR last month. In two examples, she called Trump a racist and also seemed to minimize the effects of rioting in 2020. Rufo is using those to rally public pressure for Maher's ouster, as he did for former Harvard University President Claudine Gay .

Others have used the moment to call for the elimination of federal funding for NPR – less than one percent of its roughly $300 million annual budget – and local public radio stations, which derive more of their funding from the government.

Berliner reiterated in his resignation letter that he does not support such calls.

In a brief interview, he condemned a statement Maher issued Friday in which she suggested that he had questioned "whether our people are serving our mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity." She called that "profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning."

Berliner subsequently exchanged emails with Maher, but she did not address those comments.

"It's been building up," Berliner said of his decision to resign, "and it became clear it was on today."

For publishing his essay in The Free Press and appearing on its podcast, NPR had suspended Berliner for five days without pay. Its formal rebuke noted he had done work outside NPR without its permission, as is required, and shared proprietary information.

(Disclosure: Like Berliner, I am part of NPR's Business Desk. He has edited many of my past stories. But he did not see any version of this article or participate in its preparation before it was posted publicly.)

Earlier in the day, Berliner forwarded to NPR editors and other colleagues a note saying he had "never questioned" their integrity and had been trying to raise these issues within the newsroom for more than seven years.

What followed was an email he had sent to newsroom leaders after Trump's 2016 win. He wrote then: "Primarily for the sake of our journalism, we can't align ourselves with a tribe. So we don't exist in a cocoon that blinds us to the views and experience of tens of millions of our fellow citizens."

Berliner's critique has inspired anger and dismay within the network. Some colleagues said they could no longer trust him after he chose to publicize such concerns rather than pursue them as part of ongoing newsroom debates, as is customary. Many signed a letter to Maher and Edith Chapin, NPR's chief news executive. They asked for clarity on, among other things, how Berliner's essay and the resulting public controversy would affect news coverage.

Yet some colleagues privately said Berliner's critique carried some truth. Chapin also announced monthly reviews of the network's coverage for fairness and diversity - including diversity of viewpoint.

She said in a text message earlier this week that that initiative had been discussed long before Berliner's essay, but "Now seemed [the] time to deliver if we were going to do it."

She added, "Healthy discussion is something we need more of."

J.D. Vance: The Math on Ukraine Doesn’t Add Up

President Biden wants the world to believe that the biggest obstacle facing Ukraine is Republicans and our lack of commitment to the global community. This is wrong.

Ukraine’s challenge is not the G.O.P.; it’s math. Ukraine needs more soldiers than it can field, even with draconian conscription policies. And it needs more matériel than the United States can provide. This reality must inform any future Ukraine policy, from further congressional aid to the diplomatic course set by the president.

The Biden administration has applied increasing pressure on Republicans to pass a supplemental aid package of more than $60 billion to Ukraine. I voted against this package in the Senate and remain opposed to virtually any proposal for the United States to continue funding this war. Mr. Biden has failed to articulate even basic facts about what Ukraine needs and how this aid will change the reality on the ground.

The most fundamental question: How much does Ukraine need and how much can we actually provide? Mr. Biden suggests that a $60 billion supplemental means the difference between victory and defeat in a major war between Russia and Ukraine. That is also wrong. This $60 billion is a fraction of what it would take to turn the tide in Ukraine’s favor. But this is not just a matter of dollars. Fundamentally, we lack the capacity to manufacture the amount of weapons Ukraine needs us to supply to win the war.

Consider our ability to produce 155-millimeter artillery shells. Last year, Ukraine’s defense minister estimated that the country’s base-line requirement for these shells was over four million per year but that it could fire up to seven million if that many were available. Since the start of the conflict, the United States has gone to great lengths to ramp up production of 155-millimeter shells. We’ve roughly doubled our capacity and can now produce 360,000 per year — less than a tenth of what Ukraine says it needs. The administration’s goal is to get this to 1.2 million — 30 percent of what’s needed — by the end of 2025. This would cost the American taxpayers dearly while yielding an unpleasantly familiar result: failure abroad.

Just this week, the top American military commander in Europe argued that absent further security assistance, Russia could soon have a 10-to-1 artillery advantage over Ukraine. What didn’t gather as many headlines is that Russia’s current advantage is at least 5 to 1, even after all the money we have poured into the conflict. Neither of these ratios plausibly leads to Ukrainian victory.

Proponents of American aid to Ukraine have argued that our approach has been a boon to our own economy, creating jobs here in the factories that manufacture weapons. But our national security interests can be — and often are — separate from our economic interests. The notion that we should prolong a bloody and gruesome war because it’s been good for American business is grotesque. We can and should rebuild our industrial base without shipping its products to a foreign conflict.

The story is the same when we look at other munitions. Take the Patriot missile system — our premier air defense weapon. It’s of such importance in this war that Ukraine’s foreign minister has specifically demanded them. That’s because in March alone, Russia reportedly launched over 3,000 guided aerial bombs, 600 drones and 400 missiles at Ukraine. To fend off these attacks, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, and others have indicated they need thousands of Patriot interceptors per year. The problem is this: The United States only manufactures 550 per year. If we pass the supplemental aid package currently being considered in Congress, we could potentially increase annual production to 650, but that’s still less than a third of what Ukraine requires.

These weapons are not only needed by Ukraine. If China were to set its sights on Taiwan, the Patriot missile system would be critical to its defense. In fact, the United States has promised to send Taiwan nearly $900 million worth of Patriot missiles, but delivery of those weapons and other essential resources has been severely delayed, partly because of shortages caused by the war in Ukraine.

If that sounds bad, Ukraine’s manpower situation is even worse. Here are the basics: Russia has nearly four times the population of Ukraine. Ukraine needs upward of half a million new recruits, but hundreds of thousands of fighting-age men have already fled the country. The average Ukrainian soldier is roughly 43 years old , and many soldiers have already served two years at the front with few, if any, opportunities to stop fighting. After two years of conflict, there are some villages with almost no men left. The Ukrainian military has resorted to coercing men into service, and women have staged protests to demand the return of their husbands and fathers after long years of service at the front. This newspaper reported one instance in which the Ukrainian military attempted to conscript a man with a diagnosed mental disability.

Many in Washington seem to think that hundreds of thousands of young Ukrainians have gone to war with a song in their heart and are happy to label any thought to the contrary Russian propaganda. But major newspapers on both sides of the Atlantic are reporting that the situation on the ground in Ukraine is grim.

These basic mathematical realities were true, but contestable, at the outset of the war. They were obvious and incontestable a year ago, when American leadership worked closely with Mr. Zelensky to undertake a disastrous counteroffensive. The bad news is that accepting brute reality would have been most useful last spring, before the Ukrainians launched that extremely costly and unsuccessful military campaign. The good news is that even now, a defensive strategy can work. Digging in with old-fashioned ditches, cement and land mines are what enabled Russia to weather Ukraine’s 2023 counteroffensive. Our allies in Europe could better support such a strategy, as well. While some European countries have provided considerable resources, the burden of military support has thus far fallen heaviest on the United States.

By committing to a defensive strategy, Ukraine can preserve its precious military manpower, stop the bleeding and provide time for negotiations to commence. But this would require both the American and Ukrainian leadership to accept that Mr. Zelensky’s stated goal for the war — a return to 1991 boundaries — is fantastical.

The White House has said time and again that it can’t negotiate with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. This is absurd. The Biden administration has no viable plan for the Ukrainians to win this war. The sooner Americans confront this truth, the sooner we can fix this mess and broker for peace.
