A doctoral degree in special education will prepare you to serve in an exciting career in which you can lead the educational or behavioral professions through administration, scholarship, and entrepreneurship—from teacher educator to special education manager to curriculum specialist to director of a treatment center.

Focused Areas of Doctoral Study

Graduates of the program earn their doctorates with an emphasis on one or more focus areas:

Doctoral students seeking training in American Sign Language (ASL) and deaf studies will prepare students with an understanding of the language as well as the culture. You’ll learn how to communicate in ASL, interact with deaf individuals, learn about the history of deaf culture, and how to collaborate with families and professionals.

The cognate will primarily focus on related fields within special education, Teachers College, or speech and audiology so that students have more systematic programming around deaf studies and ASL.

Doctoral students seeking training in applied behavior analysis and autism will learn to apply the principles and theories of applied behavior analysis to support individuals with disabilities in making socially important improvements in their quality of life. This focused area of study provides an emphasis in applying behavioral strategies to increase important life skills and/or decrease problem behaviors that interfere with opportunities in schools and communities.

Understanding principles of behavior, developing behavior consultation techniques, establishing organizational structures supporting skills acquisition and behavior change, and learning evidence-based treatment/intervention strategies are core concepts of this focused area of study.

Candidates have the opportunity to earn certifications in ABA and Autism from Ball State University as well as complete coursework required to become certified by the Behavior Analysis Certification Board.

Doctoral students seeking advanced training on serving low incidence populations will learn evidence-based strategies and instructional approaches that are used to teach persons with low incidence disabilities to acquire critical skills to increase their opportunities in their communities. This focused area of study provides an emphasis on severe disorders that impact learning and behavior.

Understanding principles of behavior, developing communication skills (including alternative and augmentative systems), making appropriate accommodations, and selecting treatment/intervention strategies when serving individuals with severe and moderate disabilities are key concepts of this focused area of study.

Candidates have the opportunity to expand their teaching repertoire as they work with learners with low incidence in special education settings. Teacher education preparation is also a focus of the program.

Doctoral students seeking advanced training on serving high incidence populations will learn evidence-based strategies and instructional approaches that are used to teach persons with high incidence disabilities to reach their full potential. This focused area of study provides an emphasis on commonly occurring disabilities that can be supported to help learners master educational materials. 

Understanding principles of assessment, use of effective instructional methods, making appropriate accommodations, and selecting treatment/intervention strategies when serving individuals with mild disabilities are key concepts and skills of this focused area of study.

Candidates have the opportunity to expand their teaching repertoire as they work with learners with high incidence in special education settings. Teacher education preparation is also a focus of the program.

Doctoral students seeking training on serving students with emotional and behavioral disorders will learn evidence-based strategies and instructional approaches that are used to teach persons with emotional and behavioral disorders to develop skills that help their reach their full potential. This focused area of study provides an emphasis on commonly occurring emotional and behavioral disorders that can be supported to help learners master educational materials.

Understanding causes of emotional and behavioral disorders, principles of assessment, use of effective instructional methods, making appropriate accommodations, and selecting treatment/intervention strategies when serving individuals with emotional and behavioral disorders are key concepts and skills of this focused area of study.

Candidates have the opportunity to expand their teaching repertoire as they work with students who benefit from appropriate assessment and intervention in special education settings.

Doctoral students seeking training on Response to Intervention/Multi-Tier System of Supports will learn evidence-based strategies and instructional approaches that are used to develop systems within schools that have the goal of meeting the needs of all learners. This focused area of study provides an emphasis on creating systems that will establish the structure to enhance the performance of all students while simultaneously assessing and targeting specific educational and behavioral challenges as needed by individual learners.

Understanding causes the need to address professional development, the school culture and leadership as part of the solution needed to improve assessment, curriculum, and instruction are key concepts and skills of this focused area of study.

Candidates have the opportunity to expand their knowledge of creating supporting educational systems and their teaching repertoire as they work to support all students in reaching their highest potential.

Doctoral students seeking general special education training at the doctoral level typically assume leadership roles in special education in one or more of the following positions in higher education: teacher educator, special education manager, and curriculum specialist and researcher/evaluator.

Candidates who successfully complete the program will hold a doctor of education degree with a noncategorical major in special education degree, i.e., with generic training emphasis rather than a specific disabilities training emphasis.

Degree Requirements

The doctoral degree in special education consists of 91 graduate credits post-bachelor’s degrees. Typically, a maximum of 30 credits, earned towards the master's degree, may be applied to the total 91-credit requirement.

Additional credit requirements include:

• at least 40 credits, excluding dissertation credits, must be in the major (SPCE)
• at least 48 credits must be completed at Ball State University
• at least 10 dissertation credits (DISS 799)

Entering doctoral students select initial coursework in collaboration with the Director of the Doctoral Program. They then work with the chair of their doctoral committee to develop a comprehensive program of study. The full committee then adjusts or approves the program of study.

Doctoral students are expected to acquire research skills by taking a variety of coursework in research design and statistics. They complete a rigorous research component in which they demonstrate competency with research tools applicable to Special Education, Applied Behavior Analysis, and/or their Focused Area(s) of Study.  Examples include but are not restricted to: Research Methods, Introduction to Statistical Methods, Analysis of Variance, Introduction to Qualitative Research, and Single Subject Research Design.

After admittance, doctoral students will complete coursework for a cognate in research methods. In addition, doctoral students work with their committee chairperson to select:

• a second cognate, of which you must complete nine credits at Ball State
• a second concentration within the department
• all doctoral students are strongly encouraged to complete a research cognate consisting of coursework recommended by the chair of their doctoral committee

You must complete at least 15 credits in two consecutive semesters beyond the master’s degree in order to meet our residency requirement. Residency will encourage you to:

• concentrate on coursework or research
• collaborate with faculty and other candidates
• develop specialized skills that support professional goals

At all times after completing nine credits of doctoral study, you must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 for courses taken toward the doctoral degree.

Your cumulative GPA is reported and monitored as part of the Doctoral Program Decision Point Process within the Department of Special Education.

Near the end of your coursework, doctoral students take a comprehensive examination based on their coursework in Special Education and research as well as their focused area of study Graduate students will work with their doctoral committee to determine the coursework and other preparation needed to successfully prepare for the written and oral portions of the comprehensive examination.

Under the general supervision of your committee chairperson, doctoral students develop and receive approval on a dissertation topic. Dissertations for doctoral candidates in Special Education typically contribute to the solution of important problems in education and/or applied behavior analysis.

Using their knowledge of research methods and intensive examination of the literature regarding their dissertation topic, doctoral students write their dissertation proposal. Once approved by the chair of the doctoral committee, doctoral students distribute their work to the doctoral committee for review. The proposal meeting involves the doctoral student presenting their topic and proposed methodology. The doctoral committee recommends or requires changes prior to proposal approval. Subsequent to conducting their dissertation research, doctoral students complete their dissertation defense, in which doctoral students provide a presentation to committee members committee members, who then ask in-depth questions about the study and topic as well as its implications for the field.

Doctoral Committee

The Director of the Doctoral Program in Special Education meets with doctoral students when they are admitted to the program. Doctoral students are guided through the process of forming a doctoral committee, which begins with the selection of a chair for the doctoral committee. Doctoral students are encouraged to select chairs whose scholarly interests match topics they may wish to pursue with their dissertation.

Chairs of the doctoral committee will guide students in the selection of committee members—usually during the first year of doctoral study. Upon the recommendation of the departmental program director, the dean of the Graduate School will appoint the candidate’s committee.

Doctoral students will then consult with their committee to finalize a plan of study and guide the development of the dissertation. The plan of study will be filed in the departmental office and the Graduate School.

The committee will consist of either four or five voting members, depending on your program of study.

All committees will consist of:

• two members from the major (i.e., Special Education)
• an at-large member from a field or department not already represented
• a voting member for each cognate or focused area of study as identified on your program of study

Break barriers and reform special education by gaining cross-disciplinary expertise in our doctoral (EdD) program. The program is designed to support the development of researchers, educators, and scholar leaders as they acquire knowledge in the fields of cognitive psychology and the developmental sciences in an effort to meaningfully translate that knowledge to the most pressing issues in special education today.

As a doctoral student in our program, you'll collaborate with faculty in a variety of areas, including early childhood education, elementary, secondary and transition to post-secondary education, and working with culturally and linguistically diverse learners with exceptionalities. We also focus on students with various disabilities, such as emotional and behavioral challenges.

Transform Knowledge into Action Our program infuses cutting-edge theoretical lenses in the field of SEDS to translate and apply research related to learning for diverse populations, developing scholar leaders who are changing the landscape in academic and community settings.

Collaborative Research Students have a unique opportunity to work alongside SEDS faculty, who are nationally recognized researchers in the field, on funded research projects, resulting in a wide range of experiential learning outcomes, such as presenting at conferences and co-authoring research publications.

Convenient Schedule Courses are scheduled once a week in late afternoons and evenings (Monday-Thursday) to accommodate the schedules of working professionals, and for internship experiences.

The mission of the doctoral program in the Department of Special Education and Disability Studies Department (SEDS) is to prepare scholars and leaders who can translate and determine the appropriate application of research at the school, local, and federal levels for people with disabilities. In other words, scholars draw from findings in developmental science, disability studies, and intervention research practices to develop and implement equitable, inclusive practices for students and adults with disabilities. Our mission is to prepare doctoral candidates for leadership roles in special education and related fields with a strong foundation in developmental science and strength-based, inclusive pedagogy.

Our program is designed to be both flexible and comprehensive. While most students complete their Ph.D. in 4-5 years, we understand that each academic journey is unique. You'll work closely with advisors to tailor your program, focusing on areas of research specialization that align with your goals and interests.

Within the first year of study, each student enrolls in the Educational Inquiry series with other first-year doctoral students across the College of Education. This helps you learn more about research traditions in educational research.

Special education doctoral students also enroll in a seminar which supports your:

• Understanding of the historical and theoretical background of special education
• Writing of a literature review related to a topic of interest
• Constructing of a research design

Admission requirements and process

As one of the top-rated doctoral programs in the U.S., we have more applicants than we can admit. Please pay close attention to all admission requirements. We also strongly encourage you to contact individual faculty members whose work aligns with your interests. Finding a fit with an advisor is critical to the admissions process.

To meet the individualized needs of students and advisors, our acceptance rate may vary. We generally accept annual cohorts of roughly 5-8 students.

Application deadlines are usually in January of each year for incoming fall cohorts.

Your degree can be in-progress when applying but must be completed before program starts

• Include one from each institution from which you've earned a degree and one from every institution you have attended in the previous 5 years.
• Your transcripts must include your name, coursework and degree (if completed)
• If you are offered admission , the UW Graduate School will request an official transcript from your most recent degree earned

The UW Graduate School requires a cumulative GPA of 3.0, or 3.0 for your most recent 90 graded quarter credits (60 semester credits). However, we review your application holistically. If your GPA is below 3.0, contact us at [email protected] for advice on how to strengthen your overall application.

During the online application process, you will be given instructions for adding your recommenders and getting their letters submitted electronically. All recommenders must submit their letters online.

A current academic and professional resume or vita is required. In addition to educational degrees and professional experience, you should include a listing of all relevant awards, publications, presentations or other achievements that will help us evaluate your application.

The admissions committee uses your statement of purpose, along with other evidence, to determine whether your goals are well-matched with our programs. Your statement should address goals, relevant experience, future plans and how the desired specific program meets your needs. Be sure to include personal experiences that have prepared you for the challenge of graduate school, topics like:

• Scholarly interests
• Career goals
• Your match for the program
• Faculty interests

Your statement should be 3-5 pages, double-spaced.

While optional, you can add to your application by submitting a personal history statement with each application. This statement should address your intellectual growth and development, inclusive of and beyond your academic goals. Speak to topics like:

• Educational, cultural and economic opportunities and disadvantages you've experienced
• Ways these experiences affected the development of your special interests, career plans and future goals.
• Any additional topics requested on a specific program's page

Statements should be no longer than two pages long. And while there are no standard formatting requirements, we encourage double-spaced text with a legible font.

• Within 7 business days after the deadline, we will check if your application if fully complete
• We will email you whether your application is complete or incomplete
• If your application is missing anything, you will have a short amount of time submit these items
• You can also log into the online application and check your status and see any missing items

Step 2: Application review

• Committees begin reviewing applications about three weeks after the deadline
• You will receiving an email when your application has entered the review phase

Step 3: Decision notification

• The final decision will be emailed to you
• Your status will also be updated in the online application

We value and welcoming applications from international students! If you are applying from outside the United States, there are additional requirements and application materials.

• At minimum, you must have the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree (a four-year degree from an institution of recognized standing)
• The national system of education in the foreign country
• The type of institution
• The field of study and level of studies completed
• International transcripts must be submitted in the original language.
• Your transcript should include date of graduation and title of the awarded academic degree
• If your transcript is not in English, you must also provide a certified English translation
• You do not need to have your transcript evaluated for the degree by an agency

Costs and funding

We are a tuition-based program. Estimated tuition rates are based on your residency: 

• Washington state residents: $19,584 per year
• Out-of-state students: $35,352 per year

Estimates are subject to change and may differ due to course load and summer quarter enrollment. Estimates include building fees, technology fees, U-Pass, etc. Additional program-specific fees are not included in this estimate.

Currently, nearly all students seeking funding are supported throughout their program. Our special education program and associated research centers strive to fund each student throughout their program. Funding is contingent upon various factors including levels of funding, student prior experience (e.g., practical experience as a former teacher or therapist), enrollment status as a full-time student, and student performance.

Program Overview

The Ph.D. in special education at the University of Kansas is built on a mission to prepare civically committed scholars who, through rigorous and relevant research and transformational interventions, address significant educational and social problems in ways that advance education, social policy, research, care giving and public service to enhance the quality of life of persons of all ages with disabilities and their families. Program students and graduates rely on interdisciplinary theoretical knowledge and the full range of methodological approaches to engage, influence, and transform educational and social institutions and their practices to promote learning, equitable opportunity, full participation, inclusiveness, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency.

Career Outcomes in Special Education

Graduates of the special education Ph.D. program are scholars who steward the profession, working across disciplinary boundaries to address the educational and social challenges of the 21st century. Moreover, as civic professionals, they also engage in stewardship with their communities. Our graduates are scholars who recognize that resolving the great social and education challenges requires a sense of collective social purpose among the professions and inclusive of people with disabilities, and that the professions' greatest responsibility is to the people most affected.

Doctoral graduates are prepared to hold leadership positions in diverse sectors and organizations, including:

Thus, the KU Doctoral program prepares graduates to take a variety of leadership positions. Doctoral graduates can hold faculty positions in comprehensive and research universities and leadership positions in state and national agencies. Accordingly, the doctoral program educates students to become a researcher and scholar who will then prepare prospective teachers and administrators to work in the profession. The career paths of recent graduates reflect the program's emphasis on reciprocal research to practice, civic professionalism, and stewardship of the field and discipline.

While the primary aim of the program is to prepare such scholars for tenure-line faculty positions in top tier research universities, program graduates’ knowledge and skill attainment prepare them for positions throughout the education enterprise and beyond. Graduates hold leadership positions around the country and the globe at top research universities, teacher preparation institutions, private and university affiliated research centers, foundations, research and development companies, and in various state and federal education agencies and legislative bodies.

Program Specializations

Every year the Ph.D. in special education program admits a cohort of students from around the world. Each doctoral student chooses an area of specialization and potentially a secondary area of interest as a cognate or minor (e.g., research methodology). Program applicants are asked to identify the specialization area and faculty of interest (i.e., potential academic advisor).

Currently, our program has the following areas of specialization:

Disability & diversity in school & society.

This specialization focuses on the intersecting oppressions of disability, race, ethnicity, social class, language, gender, and sexuality in education and society. It will prepare students to evaluate, synthesize, and conduct research on and teach about two lines of social injustice. The first line is the historic oppression of people with disabilities in education and other social institutions, the primary sites where difference is constructed as disability and disability is excluded or segregated and controlled. Here, we are concerned with interdisciplinary theory and research that illuminates institutional and political processes, including those of disability oppression and prejudice, the social construction of disability and normalcy, the role of social movements in advancing disability rights and equity, the politics of actualizing rights in the offending institutions, and the application of interdisciplinary theoretical and empirical knowledge of disability oppression, construction, and movements to the identification and resolution of moral and ethical disability dilemmas. The second line of oppression is at the intersection of the social categories of disability, race, ethnicity, social class, language, gender, and sexuality. Students’ research and teaching focuses on educational and social injustices that result from these intersections. Additionally, the focus is on how such oppressions are perpetrated by the biased use of disability and special education, including educational policies and practices that produce persistent patterns of racial/ethnic, class, language, and gender in special education referral and identification, disability classification, instructional placement, teaching, behavior management, and transition practices.

Specialization faculty

Early Childhood Unified (Blending of Early Childhood & Early Childhood Special Education)

This specialization focuses on advancing equitable, inclusive, and effective intervention/instruction in early childhood/early childhood special education. Specialization priorities also include the importance of families; strengths-based perspectives, theoretical and methodological pluralism; diversity and cultural/linguistic responsiveness; and addressing persistent, complex educational and social problems in early childhood/early childhood special education. This specialization will assist doctoral students in acquiring foundational knowledge of the current evidence and trends in the field for providing effective early intervention (birth-3 years old) and education (3-8 years old) for each and every young child and their families including those with developmental delays and identified disabilities. Doctoral students are prepared to effectively and successfully serve as Early Childhood/Early Childhood Special Education leaders in the field including faculty in institutions of higher education engaged in research (conducted through a variety of methodologies; disseminated through various outlets), personnel preparation and teaching (implemented through various instructional approaches and modalities), and service (performed at organization and institution, local, national, and international levels).

Evidence-based Practices: Supporting Students with Intensive Interventions Needs in Tiered Systems

This specialization focuses on evidenced-based practices and strategies in tiered systems of support – specifically Comprehensive, Integrated, Three-tiered (Ci3T) models of prevention – for students with intensive, academic, behavior, and social needs, especially those with emotional and behavioral disorders, autism, and severe learning disabilities, and those without identified disabilities. This specialization will develop the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to (a) carry out an active and innovative research agenda; (b) use systematic screening tools to detect and assist students for whom Tier 1 practices are insufficient ; (c) design, implement, and evaluate strategies and practices to prevent and respond to academic, behavior, and social challenges with attention to procedural fidelity and intervention adaptation; (d) support collaborative partnerships between general and special educators within the context of tiered systems of support; and (e) serve as recognized leaders with expertise in school-based inquiry to improve academic, behavioral, and social outcomes for students with and at risk for learning, behavior, and/or social support needs. Doctoral students in this program will be prepared to teach in higher education and conduct research in areas such as systematic screening, test construction, and/or intervention studies (using group and single case design methodology) in academic, behavioral, and social domains for students with and without disabilities.

Instructional Design, Technology & Innovation

This specialization develops leaders focused on supporting learner variability in modern learning environments through instructional design and technology innovations. This specialization develops foundational knowledge and skills necessary to (a) carry out an active and innovative research and development agenda; (b) support the design and implementation of modern learning environments, especially in the area of teacher preparation and k-12 classroom application; and (c) serve as recognized leaders in instructional design and technology as it relates to individuals with disabilities and other diverse learning needs in modern learning environments. Doctoral students in this program study prepare to teach in higher education, and conduct research in areas such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL), innovation and adoption technology in learning environments, online and blended learning, gaming and gamification, mobile learning, personalization, augmented and virtual reality, and technology enhanced performance.

Special Education Policy & Systems Studies

The Special Education Policy and Systems Studies specialization has an emancipatory focus that questions and seeks to reform oppressive aspects of education and disability policy and practice. Emancipation, through critical theoretical and empirical analysis and democratic participation of those who experience impairment and associated disabilities and those who care for, serve, and advocate for them, is essential because, like all professions, special education can be self-serving in advancing its policy agenda, failing to embrace changes in policies that affect practice, even when they are shown to be inadequate or damaging. With a critical policy perspective, special education can better address interests of those it exists to serve. Further, because special education has been enacted in federal law, it has resulted in a complex web of regulation and performativity that operate alongside but not necessarily as part of the general education system. A policy vantage point allows scholars to explore the justice narratives within education and special education while systems theories help to explain how injustice and oppression are embedded within everyday practice.

Strengths Based & Inclusive Approaches to the Education of Learners with Extensive & Pervasive Support Needs

This specialization develops leaders focused on supporting learners with disabilities—including intellectual disability, autism, and multiple disabilities—who need extensive and pervasive supports to be fully included in school, home, work, and community. The specialization focuses on the intersection of positive psychology and strengths-based approaches to disability, inclusive education, and students with extensive and pervasive support needs. The underlying conceptual elements of the specialization incorporate research and teaching to ensure that learners with extensive and pervasive support needs are provided the supports and experiences in school and the community to promote positive, self-determined, and inclusive experiences. Key areas of the doctoral research and teaching experience include: strengths-based approaches to the education of learners with extensive and pervasive support needs, particularly in the domains of inclusive practices; evidence-based practices that promote high levels of academic achievement; predictors of inclusive education and promoting access to the general education curriculum for learners with extensive and pervasive support needs; and measuring and promoting student self-determination and self-determined learning.

The doctoral degree in special education examines critical issues in special and inclusive education, and prepares our graduates to become advocates and change agents for full inclusion in policy and academic settings.

Full tuition scholarships, competitive stipends, and tailored mentoring and cohort experiences available for Special Education Ph.D. applicants through Project IMMERSE .

This program invites expansive thinking on critical educational issues as well as in-depth study. You will select a concentration in either Inclusive Educational Studies or Disability Studies and Policy, and then work with faculty to engage in cutting edge research in inclusive education and policy. Opportunities are available for conducting in-service seminars and collaborating with faculty members in research, teaching, and grant writing.

Syracuse University has a long tradition of leadership in the field of special education and is recognized nationally and internationally. Syracuse was among the first universities to bring attention to the educational needs of students with disabilities and to effectively develop and refine assessment and educational strategies for diverse learners. Syracuse faculty and students continue this important legacy of promoting the rights of students with disabilities.

Expertise in teaching and instruction is also developed with the department and with participation in the Future Professoriate Program . This includes orientations, year-round services for teaching assistants, and opportunities to co-teach with fellow doctoral students and department faculty, guest lecture, and independent instruction.

Our graduates hold prestigious leadership positions in special education and related fields, including careers in higher education, as researchers, government/policy specialists, public and private agency/organization directors, program developers, or as special education consultants and advocates. The majority of our graduates secure tenure track faculty positions at colleges and universities.

I chose to pursue my Ph.D. in special education at Syracuse because as I was working in schools around the country, I saw a real lack of understanding from teachers of what research and best practice say regarding inclusive education of disabled students-particularly students with intellectual disabilities. This led me to develop a passion for teacher preparation and ensuring all teachers are prepared to educate ALL students. Post Ph.D. I plan to become a teacher preparation program professor where I can continue researching and supporting undergraduate pre-service teachers to become truly inclusive educators.

A Flexible Online Doctorate (PhD) Program in Special Education

The Special Education Doctor of Philosophy program allows you to pursue your specific interests and goals in the field of special education. Our program is based on the concept that your learning is an active, self-regulated process.

Comprehensive Performance Assessment

The comprehensive examination consists of a written Major Paper plus a matrix of performance options that demonstrates competency in theory, pedagogy, research methodology, evidence-based practice, public policy/advocacy, and collaboration.

Admission Requirements

Possess (or be in the process of finishing) a master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or a comparable degree from a foreign institution.

Have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better (on a 4.00 point scale) for the most recent degree earned or current degree in progress. If you are still completing your master's degree at the time you apply, admission will be based on your current cumulative GPA, and you will need to re-submit your official transcript (showing your conferred degree and final GPA) during your first semester. If your final GPA fell below 3.00, you will be given additional requirements as defined by the academic program that must be met within one calendar year to remain enrolled at UNC.

Note: the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is NOT required for this program.

Prerequisite course: SRM 600 Introduction to Graduate Research (3) or equivalent (you can be admitted without this prerequisite, but will need to take it prior to taking your first SRM course in the program).

Eligibility by State

At this time, UNC can serve online education to students from every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. We are not able to offer distance education in American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau.

International Student Eligibility

International students residing outside of the United States are eligible to apply to our online programs. Applicants for online programs must demonstrate English proficiency, or enroll in the UNC Intensive English Program , in order to be considered.

Students in completely online UNC programs are not required to come to the United States. You will not need a student visa or receive any immigration documentation, and do not need to provide financial documentation.

Transferring Credit

UNC graduate school accepts applicable graduate credit with a grade of C or higher from accredited institutions. Please note that if your chosen program has a higher grade minimum for any program coursework, that minimum would apply to transfer requests for those courses. Graduate program faculty are responsible for reviewing any proposed transfer credit to ensure that course content and objectives match program content.

• Students must complete at least 50% of their graduate program credits at UNC, not including research, capstone, seminar, internship/externship/practicum, thesis, dissertation proposal, dissertation and any credits graded with S/U (P/F).
• Courses requested for transfer must not be more than eight years old for doctoral degree credit, and cannot have been used to fulfill requirements for a previously awarded degree. See the full Graduate Transfer Credit Policy .

A student who possesses a specialist degree may count a maximum of 21 semester hours of specialist work in the doctoral program with the approval of the Graduate School, the program advisor, and all members of the doctoral committee. Schools may have requirements that exceed the minimums established by the university.

This is an Extended Campus program, which means:

• A flat per-credit tuition rate for all students (in-state or out-of-state)
• There are no student fees – they are incorporated into our flat tuition rate
• Certain courses may carry specific course fees for additional services and materials

Program tuition for the 2023-24 academic year (which runs Fall, Spring, and Summer terms) is $706 per credit hour. Tuition for the 2024-25 academic year will be determined mid-June 2024.

Estimates of additional costs: For the purposes of determining financial aid, UNC follows Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE) and federal guidelines to develop an estimated, average Cost of Attendance (budget) for different student classifications. For your personal tuition estimates, we recommend using the program-specific tuition information above. But UNC's official Cost of Attendance/ Student Budgets page can help you identify other estimated expenses for which you may be responsible while completing your program.

Financial Aid

Graduate assistantships.

Limited graduate assistantship opportunities are available to offset program costs. Multiple factors are involved in awarding these positions, but the earlier you apply for your chosen start term the greater your chance of full consideration. Contact the Program Coordinator with any questions about assistantships.

Federal Financial Aid

Degree-seeking students who cannot pay for tuition alone are encouraged to apply for federal financial aid. Students must first complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The UNC FAFSA/financial aid page for graduate students has key dates and support, including the release date and deadline for each academic year (a Fall-Spring-Summer cycle which begins each August).

Late submissions of the FAFSA are still accepted throughout the school year but you may not be considered for the maximum amount of aid. If the priority deadline has passed for the upcoming/current school year, we encourage you to apply for FAFSA consideration as soon as you enroll for your first courses. Depending on the time of year, you may be able to submit an application for the current academic year and an early/priority application for the following academic year.

Doctoral degree students must be enrolled in a minimum of 5 credits per academic term for financial aid eligibility. Full time enrollment is based on 9 credits per term.

Student Health Insurance

The University of Northern Colorado offers a Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) to all degree-seeking students who enroll in courses on our main UNC Campus, an Extended Campus Center, or Online.

Degree-seeking graduate students enrolled in 6 or more credit hours will automatically receive this benefit each term. SHIP premiums will appear on your semester bill. If you have comparable insurance coverage, and do not want to be charged for SHIP coverage, you must opt out of this plan each Fall via an online waiver process .

Graduate Programs

The mission of the Special Education Doctoral Program at Purdue University is to prepare scholars for faculty positions in higher education. This residential, full time, and competency-based program is designed to prepare students to conduct rigorous scientific and applied research, to teach at the university level, and to become leaders who strive to improve educational outcomes and quality of life for individuals with special needs. Our mission is accomplished through challenging coursework, competency-based faculty mentorship, and active student involvement in applied research.

Program Requirements

The Special Education doctoral program includes 45 credits in Special Education coursework, 15 credits in statistics and research design coursework, 9 credits in coursework for a cognate area outside of, but related to Special Education (e.g. educational policy, child development, social justice, etc), and approximately 21 credits in core competencies of research, grant writing, university teaching, and professional engagement.

Such course work may be from other education programs or may include audiology and speech, language pathology, language development, instructional development, child development and family studies, psychology, etc. The Plan of Study must have at least one related area primarily outside of Special Education (in another program or Department, or combination of programs or Departments). The minimum requirement for the cognate is 9 credits.

Research is an important and integral part of each doctoral student’s program at Purdue. The specific course requirements for the major emphasis will be determined by the student, the advisor, and the advisory committee, subject to approval by the Graduate School.

Dean’s Doctoral Scholars Program  —  Individuals who are admitted to Neag School doctoral programs and who express a clear interest in becoming a faculty member of a research intensive university may be nominated by current Neag School faculty for the Dean’s Doctoral Scholars program, which provides four years of full tuition and a generous stipend to recipients.

Graduate Assistantships — Special Education faculty earned over $11 million in federal and private foundation funding over the past 12 months, which allows for additional funding opportunities for PhD students. PREVIOUS FUNDING OF CURRENT STUDENTS - How some of our current PhD students receive funding:

Project NeXus II Doctoral Fellowship   — Four years of full-time study with our nationally recognized faculty in the areas of literacy supports, positive behavior supports, or postsecondary transition through a new doctoral leadership grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Fellowships include tuition, a generous stipend, health and dental insurance, and funds for travel and research. The definition of “nexus” is a “means of connection.” Therefore, the goal of Project NeXus II is to serve as a means of connection between the most promising future scholars and the field of special education.

National Center for Leadership in Intensive Intervention  Training Grant — The Neag School has received funding for four doctoral students with specific interest in intensive intervention.

Preparing Scholar Leaders to Study Interventions and Complex Systems Shaping the Lives and Outcomes of Students With Disabilities : A Special Education Leadership Preparation Program (Ps-LINC) — This leadership grant, in partnership with Boston University , will fund five doctoral students in special education with specific interest in education policy, mental health services, and related areas affecting schoolchildren with disabilities.

Ph.D. students focusing on Postsecondary Transition engage in research and practice related to effectively supporting students with disabilities in their transition to, and success in, post-secondary life. Coursework and research experiences emphasize collaboration between secondary schools and postsecondary institutions and between Offices for Students with Disabilities and other campus services. The program also emphasizes person- centered planning, self-determination, the legal aspects of postsecondary services and secondary transition, and assistive technology.

Early Childhood

Ph.D. students focusing on Early Childhood Intervention engage in study, research, and practice related to effectively supporting infants, toddlers and preschoolers with disabilities and their families.  To this end, students participate in doctoral coursework, interdisciplinary seminars, supervised and individual research opportunities, individual mentorship, and internships in federally funded centers including the A.J. Pappanikou Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Research, Education and Service (UCEDD).  Areas of emphasis include personnel preparation, research, scholarship, policy application, and community engagement.

How to apply: joint doctoral program in special education.

The next admissions cycle will begin in September 2024, for admissions to Fall 2025.

Students in the Joint Doctoral Program in Special Education select an area of academic specialization in both special and general education. Faculty and program resources at both UC Berkeley and San Francisco State University (SFSU) are used to develop advanced knowledge of theory and research in an area of exceptionality.

Individuals from related disciplines in the social, behavioral, and health sciences who seek leadership and research training in Special Education and Human Development are encouraged to apply. Consideration is given to successful experience in working with individuals with disabilities, or in programs serving these populations.

You are required to submit two essays: a Statement of Purpose, and a Personal History.

Statement of Purpose

Describe your aptitude and motivation for graduate study in your area of specialization, including your preparation for this field of study; your academic plans or research interests in your chosen area of study; and your future career goals. Please be specific about why UC Berkeley would be a good intellectual fit for you.

There is no minimum or maximum length for your Statement of Purpose. We recommend one to three pages; 12-point font; and single-spaced.

Personal History 

Consistent with our goal of enhancing the intellectual and social enrichment of the University community, the Joint Doctoral Program in Special Education actively seeks and welcomes students from diverse backgrounds. The Personal History essay is encouraged because it provides the committee with further information about you.

Prompt: Please provide a statement about your personal history, family background, and other influences on your intellectual development. The statement should address educational, cultural, and economic opportunities and disadvantages that you have experienced, and ways those experiences have affected the development of your special interests, career plans, and future goals.

Please note that this statement is not an academic Statement of Purpose, but a personal statement that addresses your intellectual growth and development, both inclusive of and beyond academic goals. Your Personal History should be no more than two pages in length; 12-point font; and single-spaced.

For applicants whose undergraduate trajectory was not a standard 4 years at one institution, simply use your last two years of your Undergraduate degree.

Competitive Applications

Beyond the application requirements, finding a fit with an adviser or adviser(s) is critical to the admissions process. Thus, applicants are strongly advised to establish a dialogue with one (or more) faculty members in the preferred specialization area prior to applying to the Joint Doctoral Program in Special Education.

The purpose of the dialogue is to understand how your scholarship interests align and/or intersect with departmental faculty, and to ensure the specialization focus aligns with your interests and skills. Meeting with faculty will assist you to identify a good match of specialization adviser with whom you would like to study. This dialogue will also inform you about the various social, academic, and teaching aspects of the doctoral experience that will complement your development as a scholar.

In sum, competitive applicants research faculty on both campuses, read their research articles, and then reach out and communicate with these potential advisers prior to submitting your application. This process is strongly recommended and is considered vital to the department admissions process.

Review Process

A faculty admissions committee will review all completed application files for their relevant area of study. In accordance with students' active participation in School of Education governance, students will also participate in the admissions process (e.g., admissions interviews). In addition to grades and test scores, we will assess your application by noting achievements in graduate study, employment, and other activities you describe in your statement of purpose.

Some degree programs require interviews of top-ranked applicants. We will notify all applicants who need to fulfill this requirement. Telephone interviews may be conducted by arrangement with program staff.

Notification of Decision

The School of Education sends recommendations for admission to the Graduate Division between February and April for final approval. Notice from the Graduate Division constitutes official approval of admission. Communication or correspondence with the School of Education or an individual faculty member does not constitute approval of admission.

Ph.D. in Education: Special Education and Disability Studies

Study in this area of emphasis on issues of disability as they apply to education and human service agencies. Students may focus broadly across disability areas and age ranges, or they may focus more narrowly. Courses are available in the categorical areas of learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, autism, intellectual disabilities and severe multiple disabilities, and early childhood special education. Cross-categorical courses are also offered, as well as special topics courses related to key contemporary issues in special education.

World-Improving Research and Creativity

The doctorate in Special Education and Disability Studies focuses on issues of disability as they apply to schools (with a focus on teacher preparation) and to human service agencies.

About Our Program

Students may focus broadly across disability areas and age ranges, or they may focus more narrowly. Areas of study are available in the categorical areas of learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, intellectual disabilities and severe multiple disabilities, and early childhood/special education/early intervention. Cross-categorical courses are also offered, as well as special topics courses related to key contemporary issues in special education. The program has an emphasis area that the Association for Behavior Analysis International has verified toward the coursework requirements for eligibility to take the Board Certified Behavior Analyst® (Option 1) examination. Applicants will need to meet additional requirements before they can be deemed eligible to take the examination. A key focus of the program is on preparing individuals for jobs in the special education professoriate; however, the doctorate may be tailored for individuals wishing to become special education leaders at the district or state level or work with individuals with disabilities in other agencies, such as college disability support services or non-profit support services.

The Special Education and Disability Studies area of emphasis is guided by the general framework found in the   Doctoral Program in Education Application Handbook . The manual provides general information about doctoral concentrations offered in the College of Education. If you miss the Graduate School deadline, you may still apply to be a Graduate Special to begin taking coursework for your intended first semester. Materials and criteria for the Special Education and Disability Studies area of emphasis are as follows:

• International Studies: TOEFL score of 550 (unless you have a college degree from a U.S. institution)
• Undergraduate and Graduate GPA 3.00 (university requirements)
• Preference for applicants who hold a master's degree from a regionally accredited institution in an area appropriately related to special education. High achieving applicants who possess only a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution will be considered. Emphasis of prior degree area(s) should be appropriately related to special education.

• Sample of scholarly writing
• Essay of intent - should include qualifications for completing a doctoral degree and reasons for pursuing the degree

Program Structure

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program requires a minimum of 72 credits beyond the baccalaureate degree, which includes a minimum of 12 credits of dissertation. Of the remaining 72 credits, a maximum of 24 credits (with grades of B or better) may be applied from a master's degree program or previous post-baccalaureate graduate studies program toward the doctoral degree. These credits must be approved by your chair, the College of Education Doctoral Director of Graduate Study, and the Dean of the Graduate School. Credit for completion of a thesis or special project may not be included. There is no limit on the number of units transferred when student earns master’s en route to Ph.D.

At least 30 credits of 700-level courses beyond the bachelor's degree, exclusive of dissertation credits, are required for the Ph.D. degree. Degree requirements must be completed within 8 years of admission to the program.

Coursework is determined by the Advisory/Examining Committee in close consultation with the student. Credits brought in from Master’s degree may apply to area of emphasis.

Minimum of 12 credits: Dissertation

The dissertation is the culminating experience for the doctoral degree. It represents an independent research project that makes a contribution to the field of study.

Coursework earned as part of a master’s degree can count toward the area of emphasis, as well as toward the research or cognate areas, depending on relevance. Decisions about prior coursework are approved by your chair and your Advisory/Examining Committee.

Our program goal is for all students to complete the doctoral degree within 5-6 years. Research has shown that students who work on this trajectory have the highest chance of ultimately completing their doctoral studies. The best way to meet this objective is full-time studies; however, we have students in our program who are part-time students. You will be advised to work closely with your initial advisor and ultimately your chair to develop a timeline and program of study that meets your career goal and is most likely to result in completion.

• Transitioning Adolescents with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders from Most-to-Least Possible Restrictive Environments: Views of Transition Service Providers Natasha Maximoff,  Shanon S. Abernathy This study examined the transition from most-to-least possible restrictive environments for youth with emotional and behavioral disorders. Components of positive transition experiences were identified from the literature as planning for transition at intake in such a way as to promote continuity of care, family involvement, academic and employment success, and assistance in navigating the adult mental health system and services. Admission Information for Liberty’s Online Doctoral Programs in Education

Admission requirements.

• A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
• Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). A regionally or nationally accredited master’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA is required for admission in good standing.
• Applicants must submit a copy of their current initial state teaching or school counseling license to  [email protected] .
• Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. For information on alternative assessments or TOEFL waivers, please call Admissions or view the official International Admissions policy .

Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

• Be in your final term and planning to start your doctoral degree after the last day of class for your master’s degree.
• Complete a Master’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
• Submit an official transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show that you are within 6 credit hours of completion for a 30-48 credit hour master’s degree or within 9 credit hours of completion for a 49+ credit hour master’s degree.
• Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new doctoral degree.

Certificate Overview

Peabody College's Online Post-Master's Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis features coursework verified by the Association for Behavior Analysis International. The program is grounded in educational research and technology, and challenges students to integrate applied behavior analysis into practice. This program is housed within Peabody's top-ranked Department of Special Education, home to groundbreaking research, innovative practices, and widely used methods. The ABA certificate is designed for non degree-seeking individuals who have already completed a master's degree in a related field. Students who complete the program will be equipped to pursue careers working with individuals with disabilities. Coursework is offered online through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous coursework.

There's a growing need for board certified behavior analysts. According to the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, annual demand has grown each year since 2010, with job postings increasing by 190 percent from 2018 to 2021 alone, with a 14% increase from 2022 to 2023.

Upon completion of the certificate, students will have satisfied all coursework required to sit for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) examination. Note : Applicants will have to meet additional field work requirements to qualify for the BCBA exam.

Please scan and attach your unofficial transcript(s), or a copy of your official transcript(s), to your application. Note: Unofficial transcripts are accepted for the application. We understand that requesting official transcripts can be expensive, so we only require official, sealed transcripts if you are admitted and enroll at Peabody College.

Two letters of recommendation are required, three preferred for our certificate program. Their letter should speak to your academic and/or professional abilities. We recommend choosing recommenders that have taught, supervised, or have worked with you for a period of time as they will have the clearest evaluation of your potential for the program.

Statement of purpose

This is a short essay on why you want to enroll in the Applied Behavior Analysis Certificate Online Program at Vanderbilt University. Be concise with your reasoning but leave no question unanswered for the review committee. Describe your background and experiences relevant to your choice to pursue further training in applied behavior analysis, your career goals, and how training at Vanderbilt will help you achieve those goals. The statement of purpose should be 1-2 pages long, not to exceed 2 pages single-spaced.

English Proficiency Testing

TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo scores are  required  of all international applicants unless you have received a college degree and completed coursework from an accredited institution in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand.

Students who complete coursework on campuses of U.S.-based institutions   not in one of the above listed locations still need to submit English language scores.

An official score report sent directly from the testing agency is required. Our TOEFL institutional code is 1871, and there is no department code. The minimum recommended TOEFL score is 100.

There is no institutional code for the IELTS. A minimum recommended score is 7.0 for the composite score with no individual band score below 6.5.

Duolingo scores are also accepted. Test results must include subscores. If you took the test prior to July 15, 2019 when subscores were added, you should retake the test to comply with the subscore requirement. A minimum recommended score is 120.

In September 2024, the University of Maine at Fort Kent Division of Nursing will add its first doctoral degree to the program roster with a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. This latest addition will expand the university’s ongoing efforts in supporting workforce development in this high-demand field. 

“This is a historic moment for UMFK. We are happy to continue the long tradition of excellence that UMFK has had in educating nurses at every level,” said UMFK President Deb Hedeen. “With a robust group of highly qualified doctorate-level faculty, this next level of degree advancement is an obvious fit for our campus.”

Maine has demonstrated a need for individuals with graduate-level nursing education and due to the online format, the program will support needs beyond the state borders as well.

“The opportunities at UMFK are boundless. Educating nurses with doctoral level knowledge and skill impacts our profession, but, most importantly, creates opportunities for improved patient care outcomes and innovation,” said UMFK’s Associate Provost of Academic Affairs and Dean of Nursing, Dr. Erin Soucy.

As a terminal degree in nursing, the new DNP represents the highest level of clinical nursing education. Students will gain advanced practice and leadership skills to manage the healthcare team, effectively utilize evidence-based practice, improve healthcare outcomes, and influence healthcare policy.

The new program is 100% online, offered in an accelerated 7-week format, to provide working nurses the flexibility they need to manage their home and work life while progressing toward their advanced degree. Students will have the opportunity to choose between Nurse Practitioner, Nursing Administration, and Nursing Education tracks.
