3. Just-India-Pak! Now, a World Cup to be won
-By Sandeep Dwivedi
Before every India-Pakistan cricket game, a cliche gets played on loop on both sides of the border. “It doesn’t matter if we don’t win the Cup but India / Pakistan shouldn’t lose to Pakistan / India”. The nouns in that line are interchangeable, depending on the geography. Hidden in this casual remark is the essence of a bitter rivalry that overrides rational thought and limits ambitions.
It also brings to mind a charming story that a friend, and fellow cricket reporter, had narrated after his interview with Tiger Pataudi. Still a rookie, he was understandably overwhelmed to sit across his boyhood hero. While leaving, he couldn’t deny himself a fan-boy moment. “Sir, it was my life’s dream to meet you,” he said. The handsome Nawab smiled and after a cinematic pause replied, “Son, have bigger dreams”. [ Read Full Article ]

Devisha Shetty had watched Suryakumar Yadav woo cricket, while living it up in his 20s, like most youngsters of that age do. In 2018, Devisha, his wife of five years who’s known him for a decade, watched him finally commit to the game, shrugging off his wild days. The new rising of the sun that Indian cricket is witnessing, and which might reach phenom international star proportions, was the flame Devisha watched grow into the Surya blaze of now. 5. Pak Openers – SWAT salvo
-By Sandip G
In the previous edition of the T20 World, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan 303 and 281 runs respectively in Pakistan’s run to the semifinals. The next highest contribution was Fakhar Zaman’s 109. Only other batsman, Shoaib Malik, managed 100 runs, and the underwhelming middle order copped criticism for their middling returns. A year on, the situation remains as grim as it was during the World Cup, so much so that Zaman was recalled into the World Cup squad. Both in the Asia Cup as well the seven-game rubber against England, besides the tri-series in New Zealand, the vulnerabilities of the middle-order was exposed. In the Asia Cup, they were over-reliant on Rizwan, with Babar enduring a rare lean patch (68 runs at 11). [Read Full Article]
6. Ashwin’s Bowling Choices
-By Sriram Veera
Former Pakistan skippers Shoaib Malik and Misbah-ul-Haq have stressed on the big role finger- spinners play in T20 cricket in Australia. Malik spoke of a moment from his Big Bash League days, when his captain George Bailey asked him to bowl at two set batsmen.
“I gave him a stare, as if to say what is he doing,” Malik laughs on A Sports, adding, “Bailey told me ‘no, no, finger spin will help take wickets and check runs here (Australian conditions).” Misbah then rationalised the decision: “It’s difficult to sweep on those tracks with the extra bounce, or even pull. It’s not like Asia where you can rock back and pull a short ball from a spinner easily.” [ Read Full Article ]
7. The Kohli Prologue
– By Nihal Koshie
When Virat Kohli was 12, he rode with his father on a scooter to buy kites ahead of Independence Day. His father only realised halfway through the journey that Kohli didn’t take the pillion rider’s helmet. A young Kohli convinced him not to turn back. While returning, they stopped to buy watermelon, Kohli’s favourite fruit. The senior Kohli panicked on seeing a few cops strolling about. Worried about being challaned and without realising his son hadn’t got on, he sped off. Kohli says he didn’t talk to his father for two days after that. The father returned to search for his son on realising he hadn’t reached home but Kohli gave him the cold shoulder. [Read Full Article]
8. Tickets (Gone in 10 minutes) – By Devendra Pandey
“How is it possible for tickets to be sold out in just 10 minutes?” a local Melbourne Radio host wonders. A more rhetorical query wouldn’t have possibly crackled over Melbourne’s airwaves in recent times.
This is a city that regularly hosts the Aussie Open Grand Slam and the Boxing Day Test. It has also witnessed the ODI World Cup finals. But still, Melbourne was surprised by the speed at which tickets for Sunday’s World T20 game between India and Pakistan got snapped up online. [Read Full Article]
9. Haris Rauf’s Ambala buddy
– By Devendra Pandey
Three years ago when Haris Rauf moved to Hobart as part of an exchange programme between Pakistan Super League’s Qalandars and the Hurricanes, the Rawalpindi-born paceman found a friend in Haryana-born Mayank Gupta
A beautiful friendship and lots of kadha chai brewed over the few weeks that Ambala’s Mayank Gupta spent as a roommate with Pakistani pacer Haris Rauf in December 2019 in the Australian city of Hobart, long before the bowler became a big name. When India meets Pakistan in their opening T20 World Cup game in Melbourne Sunday, far away in Ambala (Haryana), Gupta might find himself in two minds on whom to support. He wants India to win, but at the same time he will instinctively hope that his friend Haris Rauf does well. [Read Full Article]
10. Captain Rohit’s Calm on Match Eve
Since Shaheen Shah Afridi bowled KL Rahul , trapped Rohit Sharma in front and finished off the job when he had captain Virat Kohli miscue a bouncer to the keeper last October in a Group game of the T20 World Cup, a lot has changed in Indian cricket.
Kohli’s reign as captain ended soon, Rohit Sharma was handed the reins, Rahul Dravid took Ravi Shastri’s place in the coach’s hot seat.A slew of experiments followed, in terms of personnel, batting spots but India have stuck to the tried and tested and the few changes have been brought about because of injury. What has changed though is the Indian team’s batting approach – from keeping wickets in hand and waiting to accelerate towards the second half of an innings to going all out from the word go. Over the past year, what has also changed is the shift in balance of power, ever so slightly in Pakistan’s favour. [Read Full Article]

Devendra Pandey, our reporter notes from Melbourne: There have been signs of relief with reports predicting it to be a cloudy evening ahead of the match between India and Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. IND vs PAK: India deploy support staff and extra players across boundary to save time
In its efforts to help accelerate the speed of a cricket game, the International Cricket Council (ICC) in January 2022 implemented the slow over rate penalty in T20I cricket. The slow overrate in T20 Internationals results in a fielder less outside of the 30-yard circle for the remaining overs of the innings. It’s an in-match penalty when the bowling team fails to complete the innings by a stipulated time .[ Read Full Article ]

India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2022 Highlights: Virat Kohli single-handedly powered India to an epic four-wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan with a magnificent 53-ball 82 not out in their big-ticket T20 World Cup game here on Sunday. Pakistan recovered from a wobbly start to post a fighting 159 for eight. India completed the chase in the last ball, with Kohli and Hardik Pandya (40) doing the bulk of the scoring after a horror start to their innings.
The two revived India with a 113-run stand for the fourth wicket after they were reeling at 31/4 at one stage. Sent in to bat, Pakistan were well served by Iftikhar Ahmed’s 34-ball 51 and Shan Masood’s unbeaten 52 off 42 balls after they lost their first two wickets with just 15 runs on the board in the fourth over.[ Read Full Article ]
13.The Match Report
-By Devendra Pandey
Virat Kohli produced arguably the finest knock of his T20 career to wrap up a seesawing, and often chaotic, thriller. For its sheer drama and quality, emotions and potential controversy, this would be remembered as one of the most thrilling and fascinating games the two sides have produced in their history. The match would whip a deluge of moments and memories in years to come.
Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah were fast and furious; Arshdeep Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar handed out a swing-and-seam bowling masterclass; Ifthikhar Ahmed struck crisp and clean sixes. But in the end, the most enduring image of the game would remain Kohli sprinting to the direction of the dressing room, holding his bat aloft, screaming “come on” and punching the air in an outpouring of pure joy . Virat Kohli was on Rohit Sharma’s shoulders, being cradled and swung in celebration, respect, and admiration, with close to 100,000 ecstatic fans screaming their heads off. A moment ago, Kohli was almost in tears, first punching the ground, then taking his helmet off, and raising his index finger to the skies. A release of pent-up emotions after the greatest innings of his career.
It was some sight. Kohli un-bottling, Sharma serenading — two men who aren’t really close friends but have, over the years, acknowledged each other’s greatness. [ Read Full Article ]
15. Emotional Enormous Rollercoaster
– By Sports Team
Till the start of 19th over, India hadn’t hit a six against the formidable pacers. Against the best bowler on the day, Haris Rauf, it was unlikely that India would change that unusual trend. The first four balls didn’t even see a boundary and then on the final two balls, Virat Kohli smoked two sixes that will be talked about for ages. First was all the muscle he punched Rauf straight behind him next to the sidescreen; the next one was pure timing and class. He helped a ball on the legs over the fineleg boundary. In the next over, Kohli once again had to repeat the miracle. This time India needed 13 from 3 balls.[ Read Full Article ]
16.The Virat Show
– By Sriram Veera
Did a tear slip out of Virat Kohli’s eyes after his wondrous chase under pressure? There he was down on his knee, punching the ground twice, as all the bottled-up emotions poured out of him. In an already astonishing career, this chase against Pakistan in a world cup might just take the cake.
It’s a format that doesn’t come naturally to him, he had taken a break as he struggled to come to terms with what he perceived as unjust treatment after his captaincy was taken away (“only MS Dhoni called me,” he would say), and he needed that break to rediscover his love for the game. “I think it was meant to be. I would rate this higher (than Mohali chase against Pakistan),” he would say at the end. [ Read Full Article ]
17. Kohli’s Sixes
Those were not just the most unforgettable sixes he had ever struck in his career, but could also be the most emotional ones too. 18. Kohli Swat Flick
-By Sriram Veera
How many World Cup sixes by a modern-day Indian batsman can you call iconic and will remember forever and a day? Sachin Tendulkar’s thump over point of Shoaib Akhtar, for sure. MS Dhoni’s thunderous wallop to cap off a perfect Wankhede night. Yuvraj Singh ’s six-orgy off Stuart Broad, perhaps. Anything else? Right on top, alongside Sachin, will sit Virat Kohli’s “freaky” swat-flick of a six against Haris Rauf at MCG.
It’s a variation of a mutant that he had created in the first place from a regular flick. A couple of years ago, Sunil Gavaskar had predicted to this newspaper how Kohli was going to evolve even further with that shot and target newer areas. [ Read Full Article ]

Let’s go back to December 2016. Ravichandran Ashwin had just watched Chennai 28 II, for the first time. Sequel of the 2007 Venkat Prabhu directorial based on friendship set against the backdrop of gully cricket. In awe of it, the all-rounder tweeted, “What a wonderful movie ‘Chennai 28 II’. Completely put my life on rewind mode. Genuinely felt I could have been a part of it.”
Little did he know six years later, he would produce a live sequel of the movie that touched him, almost coaxing Mohammed Nawaz into bowling a wide, and eventually leading India’s finish in the T20 World Cup thriller against Pakistan. [ Read Full Article ]

– By Nitin Sharma & Pratyush Raj
The translation of Arshdeep’s poem is this: “For some, I’m lucky, for some, it’s just a fluke. All they ignore is my hard work. All they talk about is fate and destiny. When time is good, anyone can succeed, but the character is tested when one overcomes tough times. Courageous individuals will not back down easily. And a character like me won’t lose hope in tough times.” [ Read Full Article ]
Ignoring trolls, Arshdeep Singh shows maturity to make impact in maiden T20 World Cup match vs Pakistan
Three hours prior to the clash with Pakistan in the ICC T20 World Cup in Melbourne, India pacer Arshdeep Singh called up his coach Jaswant Rai. It hadn’t been long since Singh was trolled over social media for dropping a catch during a match against the neighbours in the Asia Cup in UAE, but Rai did not dwell on the past.
He would only speak about Singh’s plans to utilise the big grounds in Australia to his advantage. After the left-armer claimed three wickets, including those of Pakistan skipper Babar Azam and power-hitter Asif Ali with bouncers, the coach recalled preparation and practice sessions mastering the short-pitched stuff .[Read Full Article]
22.Devil’s in the Slower Balls
-By Nitin Sharma
With the cricketing world in awe of Virat Kohli for hitting Pakistani pacer Haris Rauf for two consecutive sixes off the last two balls of the 19th over in the chase of 160 runs, former Pakistan captain and pacer Wasim Akram has highlighted the mistakes done by Rauf and other Pakistani bowlers in the match.
With India requiring 28 runs off the last eight balls, Kohli’s two sixes off the last two balls of Rauf’s fourth over meant that India needed 16 runs to win in the last over. India overhauled Pakistan’s total of 159 in the last over by Mohammad Nawaz after much drama and R Ashwin hitting a boundary off the last ball. [ Read Full Article ]

24 . The Calm after the Storm
REACHING THE team hotel well past midnight, the Indian team, unlike their fans around the world, didn’t have time to celebrate the nerve-jangling World T20 win over Pakistan. Scheduled to catch an early morning flight to Sydney, where they play the Netherlands on Thursday, the cricketers, after playing the game of their lives, had to do the most mundane everyday thing – pack their bags and leave them in the hotel lobby for the logistical staff to ferry them to the airport.
After the warm reception to Rohit Sharma & Co. by the hotel staff and the bus ride from the stadium with fans chasing them, chanting “Kohli, Kohli”, the team retired to the rooms. Their phones were clogged with missed calls and messages, answering all of them would have needed an entire day. [ Read Full Article ]

Essay on Cricket 1000 Words:
Cricket is one of the most popular sports in the world, with an estimated 2.5 billion fans worldwide. Originating in England, cricket has a rich history and has evolved into a sport that is played at both amateur and professional levels. It is a game that requires skill, strategy, and physical fitness, making it both challenging and exciting to watch.
The origin of cricket dates back to the 16th century, with some historians attributing its beginnings to Tudor times. The first recorded match was played in 1646 between two villages in Surrey, England. However, it wasn’t until the 18th century that cricket began to gain popularity, with the formation of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and the establishment of rules for the game. Since then, cricket has spread to countries all over the world, and today it is played in over 100 countries.
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game that is played between two teams of eleven players each. The objective of the game is for one team to score more runs than the other by hitting a ball with a wooden bat and running between two sets of three wooden stumps, called wickets. The game is played on a large oval-shaped field known as a cricket field, with a 22-yard-long rectangular pitch in the center.
One of the most unique aspects of cricket is its different formats. The most traditional form of cricket is Test cricket, which can last up to five days and is played between two teams of equal skill. One-day cricket, on the other hand, is a limited overs format in which each team has a maximum of 50 overs to bat and score runs. This format is more fast-paced and often results in high-scoring games. The newest format of cricket is Twenty20 (T20), where each team has only 20 overs to score runs, making it the shortest and most thrilling format of the game.
Cricket is a sport that requires a combination of physical and mental skills. Batsmen need to have quick reflexes, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to judge the trajectory of the ball in order to hit it accurately. Bowlers, on the other hand, must have good technique and be able to vary their delivery in order to deceive the batsman. Fielders need to have speed, agility, and precision in catching and throwing the ball.
Apart from the physical skills, cricket also requires strategic thinking and mental toughness. Captains must make decisions on field placements, bowling changes, and batting orders that can greatly influence the outcome of a match. Batsmen need to be able to read the field and make quick decisions on which shots to play. Bowlers must have a game plan and be able to adapt it depending on the conditions of the pitch and the batsman’s style.
Cricket is not just a sport; it is also a way of life for many people. In countries like India, Australia, and England, cricket has a huge following and is even considered a religion by some fans. It brings people together from all walks of life, transcending boundaries of class, race, and nationality. Cricket matches are social events where families and friends gather to support their team and enjoy the spirit of the game.
Moreover, cricket has also played a significant role in promoting gender equality in sports. Women’s cricket has been gaining recognition and popularity in recent years, with the formation of international teams and inclusion in major tournaments. This has opened up opportunities for women to pursue a career in cricket and be role models for young girls who aspire to play the sport.
In addition to being a popular sport, cricket has also had an impact on the economy. The Indian Premier League (IPL), a T20 cricket league in India, is one of the wealthiest sports leagues in the world. It not only provides entertainment to millions of fans but also creates job opportunities for players, coaches, and support staff. Cricket tourism has also become a growing industry, with people travelling to different countries to watch their favorite teams play.
In conclusion, cricket is more than just a game; it is a way of life that brings people together and promotes athleticism, strategy, and unity. Its rich history, different formats, and global appeal make it one of the most beloved sports in the world. As cricket continues to evolve and reach new heights, its impact on society and culture will only continue to grow.

Essay on Cricket Match in School:
Cricket is a popular sport in our country and it is loved by people of all ages. It is not just a game, but a passion for many. I am also a huge fan of cricket and recently, my school organized an inter-class cricket match.
The match took place on the school ground and the whole atmosphere was filled with excitement and energy. Our class was divided into two teams and the toss was won by our team. We were all thrilled to bat first and put up a good score on the board.
The game began and I was one of the opening batsmen. It was nerve-wracking but also thrilling to face the first ball. Our team played with great coordination and skill, scoring runs at a steady pace. The opposition team also put up a tough fight and the match was evenly poised.
As the game progressed, our team managed to get a few quick wickets and their confidence started to wane. In the end, we were able to set a target of 150 runs for them to chase. Our team then went on to bowl brilliantly, taking regular wickets and restricting the opposing team to a score of 120 runs.

Even after the match, we were all discussing our favourite moments and strategies used by both teams. It was amazing to see how each member played their role perfectly and contributed to our team’s victory.
Cricket is not just about hitting boundaries or taking wickets, it also requires strategic thinking, patience and focus. Playing this sport in school has not only enhanced my skills but also taught me valuable life lessons.
I am grateful to my school for organizing such a wonderful event and giving us an opportunity to showcase our talent. I look forward to many more cricket matches in the future! So, this was all about the inter-class cricket match held in our school, which was truly an unforgettable experience.
Essay on watching Cricket Match in Stadium:
Watching a cricket match in the stadium is an exhilarating experience. It is not just about supporting your favorite team, but also about soaking up the atmosphere and energy of the game. The roar of the crowd, the smell of freshly cut grass, and the excitement in the air all add to the overall experience.
One of the major advantages of watching a cricket match in the stadium is that you get to witness the game first-hand. You can see the players in action and feel the intensity of their movements, which is not always possible when watching on television. The thrill of a close run or a stunning catch becomes even more enthralling when experienced live.
Moreover, being surrounded by other passionate fans adds to the excitement and creates a sense of community. Cheering, chanting and singing along with thousands of other fans creates a unique bond and makes the experience even more memorable.
Additionally, there is also a chance of catching glimpses of your favorite players up close during practice sessions or after the match. This can be a dream come true for any die-hard fan.
However, watching cricket in the stadium does have its downsides. The cost of tickets, long queues for food and drinks, and unpredictable weather can sometimes dampen the experience.
In conclusion, watching a cricket match in the stadium is a thrilling experience that cannot be compared to watching it on television. It allows you to truly immerse yourself in the game and feel the passion and energy of both players and fans alike.
Despite its drawbacks, it is an experience every cricket fan should have at least once in their lifetime. So, next time your favorite team is playing in town, don’t miss the opportunity to witness the game live and create unforgettable memories.
Match Fixing in Cricket Essay:
Cricket is a beloved sport that unites people from all over the world. However, in recent years, there has been a growing concern over the issue of match fixing in cricket. Match fixing refers to the manipulation of a game’s outcome for financial gain.
Match fixing not only undermines the integrity of the sport but also has a negative impact on its fans and players. It raises questions about the fairness and authenticity of the game and can result in a loss of trust from fans. Moreover, players involved in match fixing can face severe legal consequences and suffer damage to their personal and professional reputation.
To combat this issue, sports governing bodies have implemented strict regulations and penalties for those found guilty of match fixing. They also conduct thorough investigations into suspicious activities and collaborate with law enforcement agencies to eliminate corruption in the sport.
As fans and supporters of cricket, it is our responsibility to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behavior or activities that may indicate match fixing. We must work together to keep the spirit of the game alive and ensure fair play for all. Let us continue to enjoy this beautiful sport while also staying true to its values and principles.
So, it is important for everyone involved in the sport to uphold its integrity and prevent match fixing from tarnishing the reputation of cricket. Let us all work towards a clean and fair future for cricket. Therefore, it is essential that we educate ourselves and others about the negative consequences of match fixing and spread awareness about how it can harm the sport we all love.

Of fire and friendship: A brief history of the India vs Pakistan cricket rivalry
The rivalry between india and pakistan is recognised as one of the most intense sporting rivalries in the world..
October 16, 1952 is a fairly uneventful day, one in which nothing noteworthy in the history of the world happened except when seen from the context of cricket, and indeed, sports. For this was Day 1 of the first-ever Test match between India and Pakistan , and thus the day a fixture that would go on to be recognised as one of the most famous and intense sports rivalries in the world, let alone in cricket, was born.
Just as importantly, this was also the day that started Pakistan's journey as a Test-playing nation, which meant that all of their players were making technically making their Test debuts for Pakistan. There were a number of them, though, who had played Test cricket in the past as part of the Indian team and thus shared a dressing room with many of the players who they were now playing against, including captain Abdul Kardar. The venue was the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, then called the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. Both sides were filled with names who would go down as pioneering legends in their respective countries and beyond. India were led by Lala Amarnath and featured players like Vinoo Mankad, Vijay Hazare, Vijay Manjrekar and Polly Umrigar, most of whom have trophies named after them today. Pakistan featured Kardar, Hanif Mohammed and Amir Elahi. India won that match by an innings and 70 runs but Pakistan answered with an innings victory of their own in the second. It is said that the crowd in Lucknow turned hostile on the Indians and peppered the team bus with stones. Captain Amarnath himself ended up wading through the crowd with a lathi to rescue his players. Amarnath himself would later accuse Hazare, Mankad and Hemu Adhikari, all of whom did not play in that match, of conspiring against him by opting out. India made amends in the third Test at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, winning by 10 wickets but both sides were harrowed by the pressures involved in the contest, leading to them deploying defensive tactics in the last two matches. Both ended in draws and India won the series 2-1. The intensity of the rivalry and the sheer unwillingness to accept defeat was thus on full display in the very first cricket series between the two nations.
Over the course of the matches played between the two nations in the 20th century, accusations were abound of umpires favouring the home team and of other nefarious tactics deployed by the hosts. At the same time though, the sheer quality of the matches and of the performances led to players from the two teams starting to get adulation from both sides of the border. This was testified by the classic Indian ads featuring then-Pakistan captain, and one of the greatest all-rounders of all time, Imran Khan , some of which were with India batting great Sunil Gavaskar. Off the field, it was the political manoeuvring of the Indian and Pakistani cricket boards that led to the World Cup being shifted out of England for the first time in 1987, a move also marks a historic shift in the power balance within the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The frequency of bilateral series between the two sides were always affected by the volatile relationships between the two countries. In the decade between 1998 and 2008, the two sides faced each other in 14 Test matches. That phase pretty much ended with the 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai. While Pakistan toured India for a three-match ODI and two-match T20I series in 2012/13, that remains the last bilateral competition between the two teams. Since then, though, the two sides have met each other on a number of occasions in ICC tournaments and in the Asia Cup. Regardless of how the match turned out to be, they invariably became the biggest match of those tournaments by some distance - the ICC had said that a unique broadcast audience of 706 million viewers was recorded for the entirety of the 2019 World Cup, 273 million of which came from the India-Pakistan match alone. The two sides will now face each other in an ODI for the first time since that match on Saturday in the 2023 Asia Cup.
Head-to-head records
In ODI cricket, which is the format in which the two teams are set to face on Saturday, Pakistan have historically led the head-to-head records, although India were dominant in the last decade. In the 14 matches that the two sides played between 2010 and 2020, India won 10. The two sides have faced each other 136 times in ODIs with Pakistan winning 73 and India winning 55. In 17 bilateral ODI series that were played until 2013, Pakistan won 11 while India won just five.
In T20I matches, India are the runaway leaders. They have won nine out of 12 matches, which includes the game which India had won via a bowl-out in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. Of the 58 Test matches that two teams have played against each other, a whopping 38 have been drawn. Pakistan won 11 while India won nine. The series head-to-head is tied at 4-4 between the two sides while seven were drawn.
The highest run scorer in ODIs between the two teams is Sachin Tendulkar with 2526 runs in 67 innings. Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq is the top scorer for them with 2403 runs in 64 innings. Wasim Akram with 60 wickets is the most successful bowler in the rivalry in ODI matches while Anil Kumble leads the tally for India with 54. In Test cricket, Javed Miandad (2228 runs) is the highest scorer overall while Sunil Gavaskar (2089) made the most runs for India. Kapil Dev (29) is the highest wicket taker while Imran Khan (23) is the most successful bowler for Pakistan.
In T20Is, Virat Kohli is the highest run scorer by a fair distance with 488 runs while Mohammad Rizwan is Pakistan's highest scorer with 197. The record for most wickets in T20 matches between the two teams is jointly held at 11 between India's Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Pakistan's Umar Gul.

It’s not just cricket: India vs Pakistan is the greatest rivalry in world sport
The entire subcontinent will be transfixed by today's glorious, historic and all-too-rare event.
- 16 June 2019, 12:00am
Peter Oborne
There are plenty of much-anticipated contests in the 2019 Cricket World Cup. But nothing to compare with today’s match at Old Trafford, where India play Pakistan in the latest epic in a rivalry that dates back to Partition in 1947.
It’s a rivalry that is regularly punctuated by war. No cricket was played between the two countries from 1961 until 1978. The 1965 conflict, caused by Pakistani aggression, severed relations. By the time a ceasefire was declared, Indian tanks were on the outskirts of Lahore, where a 12-year-old Imran Khan was distraught not to be allowed to join a local militia.
The two countries fought again in 1971 when India backed insurgents in the liberation war which led to the secession of East Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh. Cricketing relations remained in cold storage until 1978, by which time Imran was leading his country’s pace attack, helping Pakistan to demolish a weak Indian opposition.
Most popular
David butterfield, decline and fall: how university education became infantilised.
This was the start of a happy period of ‘cricket diplomacy’, as Pakistan’s military leader General Zia-ul-Haq used cricket to improve relations with Rajiv Gandhi, prime minister of Pakistan’s much larger southern neighbour. This new friendship did not last. Renewed hostilities meant only a handful of Tests were played between 1987 and 2004, when Pakistan hosted a touring Indian team for a successful series in which special arrangements were made to allow Indian supporters to cross the border. At the end of the Test series the Indian High Commissioner told the Pakistani diplomat Shahryar Khan: ‘20,000 Indian cricket fans visited Pakistan. You have sent back 20,000 Pakistan ambassadors to India.’
Sadly the goodwill was dissipated by the terror attack on Mumbai in 2008 which left at least 174 people dead, and where evidence pointed strongly to the involvement of elements connected to the Pakistan state. The two countries haven’t played a Test match since. Both sides have been at fault, though at present Prime Minister Modi’s India is the worse offender, having repeatedly rebuffed overtures from Pakistan. In the run-up to this World Cup, India has exploited its cricket team for political ends. The Indian cricket team wore camouflage army-style caps in a match against Australia in March, in solidarity with Indian paramilitary police killed in the attack by a Pakistan-based group in Kashmir. The Pakistan cricket board wrote to the International Cricket Council (ICC) asking them to take action against this aggressive expression of patriotism, but they said that they gave India permission to wear the caps before the game.
At this World Cup, however, India’s wicketkeeper MS Dhoni has caused a fresh problem. An honorary lieutenant colonel of the Indian territorial army, Dhoni has been sporting the insignia of the Indian special forces. He was strongly supported by the India cricket board, but this time the ICC has forced him to back down. Dhoni appeared without the controversial logo on his wicketkeeping gloves in last Sunday’s game against Australia. Ticket prices for today have soared well into four figures. For both teams defeat will be viewed as a national disaster. Nevertheless I predict that relations between Pakistani and Indian supporters will be good-humoured. Whatever the ructions elsewhere supporters have always got on well.
In the 1954-55 season, only seven years after the unspeakable bloodshed of Partition, thousands of Indian supporters were allowed to cross the border from Amritsar to Lahore. Pakistanis invited Indians into their homes. The Tribune , a Hindu paper, ‘was surprised to see the Mall Road and Anarkali Bazaar crowded with Indians and Pakistanis greeting each other with embraces, some with tears in their eye, reviving all memories of their days together’.
Yet the cricket itself in that series was petrifyingly dull. It was the first time that any five Test match series resulted in a 0-0 draw. Another 0-0 result was recorded when Pakistan returned to India in 1960. Indeed, the two countries played 13 consecutive draws over two decades. The scoring rates rarely exceeded two runs per over, often plunging much lower. In the first Test of the 1954-55 series, played in Dacca, Pakistan threw away a fine chance to win the game by scoring only 97 runs in 73 overs for the loss of one wicket. This set the tone for the series. Neither side dared risk defeat. Too much was at stake. After the fourth drawn Test in Peshawar, the Ambala Tribune published a match report with the headline ‘Match saved but cricket killed’.
Cricket matches between Pakistan and India are burdened with the weight of history under which pressure they frequently buckle. Often the matches are accompanied by threats and sabre rattling by political leaders. They must always be understood in the context of past and future wars.
As the famous England all-rounder Wally Hammond noted 60 years ago: ‘If every cricket match between India and Pakistan can be played without a ring of machine guns to keep the onlookers from rioting, then I feel the prestige attaching to the game is great.’ No cricketing contest, not even the Ashes rivalry between England and Australia, carries half as much gravity. Neither India nor Pakistan has yet been able to cope with the past in such a way that it ceases to present an obstacle to the future. The two countries nearly went to war only four months ago when an Indian jet was shot down over Pakistan territory after the atrocity in Kashmir.
Life on the subcontinent will halt today. An audience of more than a billion people is guaranteed. Even the Taleban in the remotest parts of the north-west frontier will lay down arms and pay attention. All the religions of the sub-continent — Sikh, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, Parsi, Christian and others — will be transfixed by the excitement of a glorious, historic and all too rare sporting event. When India and Pakistan eventually, as they surely will, resolve their differences and find a way of living in harmony, cricket will have helped to bring about the solution. The two countries have so many things in common and cricket is one of the most important. I can’t wait.

2 Days After Cricket Victory Over India, Pakistan Still Feels the High
The nation is experiencing a much-needed burst of joy after it unexpectedly beat India in a cricket match in Dubai.
By Salman Masood
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Ammar Barlas was prepared for disappointment. He is Pakistani, which — almost by default — makes him a cricket fan. And Pakistan was preparing to play India , its hated but heavily favored rival and a team it had not defeated in the sport’s World Cup tournament in nearly 30 years.
Still, a fan supports his team, and Mr. Barlas, 35, prepared a special dish of chicken and rice and invited his college buddies to watch the inevitable.
“The get-together of the friends was meant for the enjoyment of the game, but we were also mentally prepared for a loss,” Mr. Barlas said. He added, “We were feeling anxious but kept repeating the sentence, ‘First of all, you don’t have to panic,’” referencing a phrase popularized by Pakistan’s prime minister, Imran Khan , who was once a cricket star.
Pakistan averted defeat. It unexpectedly beat India on Sunday night in Dubai, advancing to play New Zealand on Tuesday evening — it won that match, too — and giving the nation a much-needed boost that lingered even two days later.
With an ailing economy, bitter political discord among the ruling and opposition political parties, militants rearing their heads in some parts of the country, and turbulent relations with the United States and several European countries, Pakistan sorely needs a feel-good moment.
“In a country where cricket is almost a religion and good news — sporting or otherwise — has been hard to come by in the recent past, the victory was a much-needed reason to celebrate,” read an editorial in The Express Tribune on Tuesday.
The win united the nation, enveloping it with a sense of national pride. Cricket binds the country. It is perhaps the only legacy of British colonialism that is neither contentious nor despised. Instead, cricket stirs passions and transcends ethnic, linguistic and political divides.
The victory over India set off celebrations that carried on long into Sunday night. The whole country was transfixed on the live match, which was aired in restaurants and cafes. Streets and shopping centers were mostly deserted from 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
After the win, people young and old poured out onto the streets, honking horns, setting off big rounds of firecrackers and breaking into Bhangra moves in several Punjabi cities and towns. Many even resorted to aerial firing (which is illegal, but no one seemed to care Sunday night). The green flag of Pakistan was raised with pride.
Immediately victory memes went viral on the country’s WhatsApp groups, and one video on Instagram of a newlywed couple was widely shared. In it, the groom stands up as soon as the wedding hall receives the news of Pakistan’s win and starts chanting, “Long live Pakistan!” He is quickly joined by other guests.
On his Twitter account, Mr. Khan, the prime minister, who was visiting Saudi Arabia over the weekend, posted a photograph of himself watching the match in a hotel suite, surrounded by cabinet ministers, with a message: “The nation is proud of you all.”
Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, the interior minister, said he had ordered the removal of police barricades and blockades on the roads in Islamabad, the capital, and some parts of Punjab so that the public could celebrate. The police had taken preventive measures last week to stop a protest of a religious party from marching toward Islamabad.
On Monday, the country’s newspapers carried stark headlines and pictures of the cricket team on their front pages. Pakistan “vanquished” India, one English daily declared. Jang, the country’s leading Urdu newspaper, described the win as “historic,” a sentiment echoed by other major Urdu newspapers.
Saba Usman, a teacher at a private school in Islamabad, said her fifth-grade students were overjoyed the next morning. “The children couldn’t stop talking about the game and kept praising Pakistani players,” she said. “Some of my students said they couldn’t sleep out of happiness.”
Pakistanis who are not fans of cricket also felt elated. “The win was an excuse to dance and enjoy with friends and family,” said Hamza Rao, a resident of Lahore. “Even those who are not into sports, like me, took vicarious pleasure.”
Mr. Rao said he phoned his sister and rushed to her house to celebrate the win. “We ordered cheat meals,” he said, “without any guilt.”
The celebrations, however, cost some fans dearly. The police in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir, the picturesque Himalayan region that is claimed by both India and Pakistan, said students who celebrated Pakistan’s victory were being investigated under an antiterrorism law.
As Indian players played down the disappointment as something that happens in sport and images of the Indian captain graciously congratulating a victorious Pakistani team made the rounds as expressions of good sportsmanship, Indian fans took it differently.
Online abuse took a communal tone, with trolls channeling much of their anger at the only Muslim player on the team. Some of the abuse was so vicious that many veterans of Indian cricket had to come to the support of the player, Mohammad Shami.
For a majority of the fans of the Pakistani cricket team, the revelry has continued. Mr. Barlas, the cricket fan who watched the game with his college friends, had said a special prayer before the game. Afterward, he gave out sweets in the neighborhood.
On Tuesday he said, “My friends and I are still intoxicated by the win.”
Mujib Mashal contributed reporting.
T20 World Cup 2022: India vs Pakistan – As it happened
Latest updates from the T20 World Cup Group 2 match between India and Pakistan at the MCG.
- Kohli’s masterclass takes India home in a tense finish.
- Pakistan have now won only two of their last eight matches against India.
- India have won 10 of the 13 T20s both sides have played against each other.
- In 19 matches at the MCG, the team batting second has won 11 times.
It’s a wrap!
So, where do both teams go from here?
India will now head to Sydney, where they play the Netherlands on Thursday.
Pakistan will fly to Perth to regroup and get their campaign back on track. They face Zimbabwe on Thursday. They can take solace in the potent bowling attack they have and should consider today’s result as an anomaly, as most days, their attack can take down any side when on song.
For those who braved the early start like I did, I am grateful for your company and look forward to you joining us next time.

Where did it go wrong for Pakistan?
India looked down and out at 31 for 4 in the seventh over. The spinning tandem of Nawaz and Shadab did well to build on the previous efforts of the pacers as they looked to throttle the run chase.
Pakistan were very much in the driver’s seat and looked to have the match done and dusted when India were staring down the barrel at 54 needed off the final four overs.
Ultimately, it was the pressure of the occasion and the opposition they were facing which proved to be their downfall.
A fatal combination of deciding when to bowl certain bowlers, and bowling error itself, proved to be the difference as the match descended into the final stages.
Kohli’s calculation to take Rauf on in the penultimate over gave India a fighting chance with 16 needed off the final over, before Nawaz suffered a serious meltdown of no-balls and wides to gift India the victory.
Virat Kohli… 82* in 53 balls! 50* in 43 balls, 4 fours, 1 six 32* in 10 balls, 2 fours, 3 sixes #T20worldcup22 #T20WC2022 #INDvPAK #PAKvIND — Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) October 23, 2022
Rohit: ‘The best innings Kohli has played for India’
Rohit was in raptures about the man of the moment.
“I have no voice left. We always wanted to make sure we stayed in the game as long as possible. We’ve talked constantly about it. No matter what the situation, you’ve got to believe you can pull through”, he said.
“That partnership [Hardik and Kohli] changed the game for us. We knew it would not be an easy target on that pitch, and that we had to bat out of our skins. Hats off to Virat. It has to go as not one of his best, but the best innings he has played for India.”
Rohit Sharma 🗣 “We were in no position to win this. It is Virat’s best knock playing for India.” Kohli’s knock doesn’t need any validation but Rohit’s statement just sums up how good this effort was! #INDvPAK — Prasenjit Dey (@CricPrasen) October 23, 2022
Babar: ‘Credit to Kohli’
A rather despondent Babar had this to say about the crazy sequence of events which unfolded.
“We started well in our bowling, but then all credit to Hardik and Kohli. They shifted the momentum and finished the game well.
“We had a chance, and I just asked the boys to believe in themselves, but again credit to Kohli. We can take a lot of positives from the way Iftikhar and Masood played, and how we finished the innings.”
Cricket can be very cruel at times, so many ifs & buts, that ball hitting the stumps & going for 3, might have gone for none. Even that might not have mattered, India might have attempted other shots. The margin on the no-ball, it is extremely hard to reconcile with such things > — Rehan Ulhaq (@Rehan_ulhaq) October 23, 2022
Kohli: ‘I have no idea how that happened’
A visibly emotional Kohli did his best to reflect on the stunning change of events.
“I honestly have no words. I have no idea how that happened. Hardik kept telling me to believe and to stay till the end,” he said.
“The calculation was simple. Nawaz had one over to bowl, so if I could take Haris down, they would panic. Till today I said Mohali was my best T20 innings. Then I got 82 off 52 and today I got 82 off 53. Both are just as special but I would count this one higher due to the magnitude of the game.”
It should be no surprise then that he is deemed the Player of the Match .
For his stunning match-winning knock, @imVkohli bags the Player of the Match award. 👏 👏 Scorecard ▶️ https://t.co/mc9usehEuY #TeamIndia | #T20WorldCup | #INDvPAK pic.twitter.com/xF7LfA4Od5 — BCCI (@BCCI) October 23, 2022
India pull off miraculous MCG win!
Have you caught your breath? My fingers are on fire.
Did you ever think the match, when India was teetering at 31 for 4 in the seventh over, would finish in the manner that it did?
Kohli ends up with an unbeaten 82 off 53, which will surely go down as the greatest T20 innings he has played to date, especially when you consider the circumstances and occasion.
One can only doff their hat to superb, under-pressure innings that were timed to perfection.
It was a real masterclass in how to bat and believe even when the situation seems grim.

20 overs. India WIN!
Ashwin is able to clear the infield, as he just needs to find the gap in order to get the quick single.
What an unbelievable game! India were done and dusted, and now you see Kohli sprinting to his teammates as he is clearly battling back a few tears as well.
It just doesn’t get bigger than a World Cup encounter with your rivals to pull off a result like this!
India 160-6 in 20 overs.
19.5 overs. India 159-6
Nawaz delivers another wide!
This is just astonishing. In all my years, I don’t think I’ve seen a team in such a strong position completely fall apart at the seams in the end.
The MCG explodes and India now need 1 off 1 to seal a famous win!
19.5 runs. India 158-6
Nawaz gets his man, although the ball slips down the leg side, which Karthik tries to sweep but ends up hitting his pad.
Rizwan is quickly on it and is able to stump Karthik before he has a chance to regain his ground.
New batsman in will be Ashwin.
India need 2 off 1 now.
19.4 overs. India 158-5
Kohli bowled. But it was a free hit! It doesn’t count.
In the midst of the confusion, the ball escapes behind the keeper in the third-man region, and the batsmen are wise to it as they scamper three useful byes.
It is 2 off 2 now.
19.4 overs. India 155-5
Oh dear, oh dear. What are Pakistan doing?
They are letting this match completely go as Nawaz, with the pressure clearly getting to him, delivers a wide ball well outside off stump.
It is 5 off 2 now.
19.3 overs. India 154-5
This is HUGE.
Kohli gets behind a high full toss from Nawaz, which flies high over deep square leg. And it’s a no-ball!
India get seven off that delivery, and Pakistan will have to re-bowl it.
6 off 3 needed.
19.3 overs. India 147-5
Full, almost yorker length as Kohli is able to get this away down to long-on, with Karthik running like the wind to execute to great success.
13 off 3 now.
19.2 overs. India 145-5
Karthik comes down the track but gets a chest-high full toss which he is able to swat away through the long-on region for a quick single to get Kohli back on strike.
15 off 4 now.
19.1 overs. India 144-5. Hardik out!
Hardik’s vigil comes to an unfortunate end as he tries to send Nawaz out of the ground off the first ball but ends up miscuing high to Babar, who takes it comfortably.
The new batsman is Karthik.
16 off 5 needed
19 overs. India 144-4
Kohli is turning it on at the MCG as, after a few misfires to try and get Rauf away, he is able to slam a short-of-a-length ball straight back over Rauf’s head for six.
He then pulls off an incredible flicked six high over the deep fine leg fielder to end the over in style.
15 welcome runs come off the over as the Indian contingent in the crowd celebrate.
India now need 16 off 6 to pull off an unlikely victory.
As expected, Nawaz is given the final over by Babar. Huge moment here!
Biting your nails yet?
It’s just that kind of finale to that kind of a match…
I can't take this anymore 😭😭 — Nimra (@i_nimra) October 23, 2022
18 overs. India 128-4
Shaheen is brought on and Kohli attacks first ball with a lofted pull over midwicket, which just falls short of the boundary rope.
Kohli is able to pick up another fortuitous boundary and brings up his fifty.
Sixteen off the over as Shaheen finishes his spell with 0-33.
Nawaz still has one over to bowl as Rauf is given the penultimate over. India will want as many as possible now before unleashing into Nawaz off the final over.
32 off 12 now.
17 overs. India 112-4
Naseem is rewarded by bowling out his final over and does well in changing up his lengths and pace to keep the batsmen guessing.
He ends up with fantastic figures of 1-23.
Pakistan are going for the jugular as the boundaries continue to dry up.
48 needed off 18.
16 overs. India 106-4
Naseem replaces Shaheen and is clipped fourth ball by Kohli through fine leg for a boundary.
10 is taken off the over, with the team 100 brought up as well.
Babar turns to Rauf next, who has struck twice already, and the pacer responds by giving up just six runs.
Superb partnership from these two as they have put on 75 for the fifth wicket. Just what the doctor ordered if you are an Indian fan.
54 off 24 required.

14 overs. India 90-4
After the batsmen lay into Nawaz, Babar smartly elects to bring back on his wrecker-in-chief, Shaheen.
Kohli does pick off a boundary through deep fine leg to help India get nine off the over.
Shadab is given the opportunity to finish his spell next over, and Kohli answers first ball with a back-foot cut through the covers that just beats the long-off boundary rider.
The spinner only gives up four more runs as he finishes with excellent figures of 0-21.
70 off 36 now.
12 overs. India 74-4
Shadab continues for the 11th over, and aside from a drive drilled straight down the ground from Hardik, is able to keep India to nine runs.
Next over, Hardik, after getting enough of a sighter of Nawaz, clears his front leg to register the first six of the innings over deep midwicket.
Kohli follows that with a straight six on before Hardik finishes the over with a mow over long-on for six more.
20 off the over.
86 off 48 required.
As it stands
India need 115 off 60 balls with six wickets in hand.
Kohli and Pandya in the middle. Fans hoping and praying.

On This Day In 2021: Pakistan Ends Winless Streak Against India At World Cups
- Nibandh Vinod
- Trending Desk
Pakistan secured a commanding 10-wicket victory over India in the 2021 T20 World Cup opener held in Dubai. Shaheen Afridi was named Player of the Match for his outstanding bowling performance.
Indian cricket team’s sensational 13-match winning streak against Pakistan at the World Cups came to an end on this day (October 24) in 2021. The win also marked Pakistan’s first 10-wicket victory in T20 internationals. The-then Pakistan skipper Babar Azam won the toss and elected to field first in Dubai.
The decision paid off as India lost their three wickets in quick succession. Rohit Sharma departed scoring a duck in the very first over of the match. Pakistan speedster Shaheen Afridi picked up the wicket of Rohit. India’s other opening batter – KL Rahul—also failed to make an impactful performance as he scored three runs facing eight deliveries.
It was Shaheen Afridi once again who claimed the wicket of KL Rahul in the third over of the contest. India’s top order woes continued as Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed for 11 runs. It was Hasan Ali who claimed the wicket of Surya in the sixth over. India endured a horrendous start to their innings as they found themselves reeling at 31 at the loss of three wickets.
Rishabh Pant and the-then India skipper Virat Kohli weathered the storm and stitched an important partnership of 53. Pakistan’s Shadab Khan provided a crucial breakthrough having picked up the wicket of Pant in the 13th over. The Indian wicketkeeper departed scoring a quickfire 39 off 30 balls.
Virat Kohli continued his momentum and scored a half century. Kohli’s vital innings of 57 off 49 balls came to an end in the penultimate over. With Kohli’s dismissal, Shaheen Afridi completed his three-wicket haul. Kohli’s crucial knock comprised five boundaries and a maximum.
Thanks to Kohli’s significant contribution, India succeeded in posting a defendable total of 151 at the loss of seven wickets.
Shaheen Afridi was Pakistan’s most impactful bowler of the contest as he finished with impressive figures of 3/31 in his four overs. Hasan Ali also chipped in with two wickets under his belt.
Pakistan looked solid during the run chase with the two opening batters—Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan—appearing to be in fine touch. Despite India possessing a formidable bowling lineup, the Virat Kohli-led side failed to pick up a wicket in the match. Pakistan scored the winning runs without losing a wicket and with 13 balls to spare.
While Babar Azam remained unbeaten on 68, Mohammad Rizwan scored 79 (not out) off 55 balls. Shaheen Afridi was adjudged Player of the Match for his spectacular bowling.

As it happened - India vs Pakistan, Men's T20 World Cup, Super 12s
In their 13th attempt in World Cups, Pakistan finally managed to beat India, and did so comfortably on a night when almost everything went to plan for them. With the sensational uprooting of the openers with the new ball, Shaheen Shah Afridi was the brightest star of the night, but everyone in the support cast played their role well, including a nerveless chase by the openers. The first half of the match was as if Pakistan were playing on the white board. Afridi, you pick me early wickets. Imad Wasim, you bowl cheap Powerplay overs against their right-hand top order. Hasan Ali, we need one impactful over in the first 10 from you. Mohammad Hafeez, you can finish Imad’s overs if we get left-hand batter Rishabh Pant in. Shadab Khan, you control the middle overs. Haris Rauf, at the end of the innings, pace is pace yaar. And change of pace is change of pace yaar.
Fifties for openers

Cricket is now considered the second most recognized spectacle in the world, after soccer.
Some Renowned Cricketers and Their Contributions
Paragraph on Some renowned cricketers and their contributions should talk about cricketers of different times and eras. Initially, cricket was a sport dominated by players from British countries and their colonies. Back then famous cricketers were Don Bradman, Jack Hobbs, Jim Laker, and many more. Don Bradman continues to hold the record of highest average of 99.9 in a test match. Jim Laker was the first player to capture all 10 wickets in an inning in a test match and also capture 19 wickets in an inning.
In contemporary times legacy has been continued by young players of independent countries which were once British colonies. Here India has performed remarkably. Indian players such as Suni Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and many more have left their mark. Gavaskar was the first cricketer to score 10000 runs in test cricket and he also broke Don Bradman’s record of 29 centuries. Kapil dev on the other hand never bowled a no-ball. Test Cricket
It is the form of cricket that has the longest duration and is generally considered the highest standard in the game of cricket. One such example of an ODI match in cricket is the Cricket World Cup, which is generally held once in four years. Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for most runs and centuries in the history of ODI cricket with 18,426 runs made.
Twenty 20 Cricket (T20)
It is a shortened format of a cricket match. Professionally, it was first introduced in 2003 by the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board). In a match of T20 cricket, each team has single innings and the limit of overs in the match is 20. A typical match of T20 cricket has a duration of 3 hours. Australia holds the top ranking in the ICC T20 International Championship with ratings of 275.

Ahead of the series-deciding third Test between Pakistan and England in Rawalpinidi, we look at the big talking points, including the pitch, problems for Ollie Pope, and inexperienced spinner Shoaib Bashir...
What can we expect from the pitch?
Such has been the conjecture over the Rawalpindi pitch in the lead-up, you could almost end this piece here with the solitary talking point.
Images have shown two large fans, six gas-powered heaters and two giant windbreaks on the playing surface, with Pakistan seeking to dry out and wear a pitch notoriously favourable for batting.

England earned a famous win in that Test and also claimed the opening match of this series, winning by an innings on another belting batting track in Multan.
But with Pakistan opting to use that very same surface for the second Test, that flat pitch from a week prior finally started breaking up to assist the hosts' spinners: Noman Ali and Sajid Khan sharing all 20 England wickets as they earned a convincing 152-run win.

What kind of pitch will be on offer this time round? England certainly think it will turn, selecting three spinners for the first time this series - including leggie Rehan Ahmed - on a surface that visiting captain Stokes says has been "raked".
"It's pretty obvious there's been a few rakes put across it. It will be interesting to see how it goes. I've never been a groundsman, but you'd think a rake would assist the spin," he said.
"You look down it and we can have a pretty good guess which ends the Pakistan spinners will operate from. There's not too much grass to hold everything together, [with] a couple of days' traffic on there, foot holes and stuff like that."
The toss could be all-important with both teams surely hoping not to bat last on the potential dust bowl?
Returning to Rawalpindi
While there is hope - certainly from a Pakistan point of view - that Rawalpindi will offer some turn over the next five days, England's most recent Test there two years ago was played out on an absolute road as the tourists secured the most remarkable of victories to tee up their 3-0 series sweep.
That match will always be remembered for the record-breaking first day's play which saw England rack up a staggering 506 runs!
In doing so, they became the first side to score 500 on day one of a Test - England's 506 also the fifth-highest total all-time on any day's play and a new record-high in Pakistan, beating 417.
Zak Crawley (122 off 111 balls) cracked the fastest hundred - off 86 balls - by an England opener in Tests, while Ben Duckett (107 off 110), Ollie Pope (108 off 104) and Harry Brook (101no off 81) also notched tons, with the latter's maiden century briefly threatening Gilbert Jessop's 76-ball and 122-year record for England.
England would eventually make a massive 657 runs in their first innings, but the job was far from done. Pakistan, too, highlighted the placid nature of the pitch, boasting three centurions of their own in captain Babar Azam (136) and openers Imam-ul-Haq (121) and Abdullah Shafique (114) as they replied with a score of 579.
Live Test Cricket
The 78 in arrears proved plenty for England to work with, however, as the tourists quickly cracked 264 in only 35.5 overs on the fourth afternoon, setting Pakistan 342, which would ultimately prove beyond the home side as James Anderson (4-36) and Ollie Robinson (4-50) spilt eight of the 10 second-innings wickets to fall to see England wrap up a most memorable 74-run victory.
Brilliance of Bashir
Shoaib Bashir's introduction to Test cricket has been an utterly seamless one ever since being plucked from relative obscurity at just 20 years of age to debut on the tour of India earlier this year - with a impressive haul of 17 wickets, including two five-fors, following over his first three Tests.
Conditions proved more challenging at home this summer, as is to be expected, though there was still plenty of promise shown by the young off-spinner, none more so than when spinning England to victory over West Indies at Trent Bridge with career-best figures of 5-41 in the second innings.
Back in the sub-continent, Bashir's confidence appeared to take a knock on the flat deck of the first Test in Multan, claiming only one wicket across his 38 overs of toil for the match, and with England's former front-line spinner, the more experienced option of 33-year-old Jack Leach often handed the ball first out of the two Somerset tweakers.
But there was evidence in the second Test that Bashir was getting back to near his best, with his four second-innings scalps containing Pakistan's entire top three.
Sky Sports' Nasser Hussain said afterwards: "Bashir bowled beautifully, especially in that session leading up to lunch on day three. The challenge for him still is bowling to right-handers and on a more attacking line. But, you've got to remember, he is learning his trade."
'Feast or famine' Pope in need of runs
The Rawalpindi decider could be a crucial game for England vice-captain Pope as questions continued to be asked of his frantic nature at the crease and "feast or famine", to use Hussain's phase, batting returns, which have his average at 34.49 after 51 Tests.
Pope struck a sublime 196 early last year in India but then went eight innings without passing fifty. He made three successive fifty-plus score at home to West Indies this summer, only to then muster a best of 17 across his next six knocks.
And now, after hitting 154 in the final home Test of 2024 against Sri Lanka, he has a top-score of 29 in four innings in Pakistan, twice dismissed in the 20s in the second Test - bowled by Sajid Khan driving against the turn first time around and then lobbing a simple catch back to the same bowler in the second.
Writing in the Telegraph recently, former England captain Michael Vaughan said of Pope: "I am not sure he gets those steady scores of around 50 enough. He simply takes too many risks. Every risk he takes looks so high risk, like he could get out at any time.
"You would not put it past him to play brilliantly in Rawalpindi. The worry is that you want calmness and consistency from No 3 and he does not provide that."
While Pope's place may not be in immediate jeopardy, we have seen England's ruthlessness in the past, such as in the decisions to move on from Jonny Bairstow, Ben Foakes and Anderson.
If their vice-captain continues in this vein, they may have to make another big call, about his batting position or spot in the side entirely.

New Zealand completed a landmark first Test win in India for 36 years on Sunday (October 20) in Bengaluru. Their previous victory was in 1988, in a match dominated by New Zealand’s greatest-ever servant.
Having not toured India for 12 years, New Zealand arrived in the subcontinent in 1988 looking to recreate their Nagpur demolition almost two decades before - at that point their only Test win in India. The first match of that series, however, again in Bengaluru, drove home the scale of the challenge that faced them.
New Zealand were bowled out for sub-200 in both innings of that game, ripped out by India’s formidable spin attack, and lost by 172 runs. Their own premier spinner, John Bracewell , failed to take a single wicket, highlighting the difference between the two teams in completely alien conditions to most of the Black Cap side.
The one shining moment of light in that Test was Richard Hadlee , aged 37 and back for a second tour of India after a respectable outing in 1976, three years into his career. It took just three overs of the opening Test for Hadlee to find Arun Lal’s edge, and go where no bowler had ever gone before with a record 374th Test wicket.
Hadlee went on to produce some magic in that match, taking five-for in the first innings. But that was only a precursor to one of his finest outings next time out in Mumbai where, not unlike in 2024, it was relentless pressure from New Zealand’s seam attack that masterminded a famous win.
New Zealand registered their first Test win in India since 1988 with an impressive win in Bengaluru 👏 Scorecard ➡️ https://t.co/R1aQWfV9XT pic.twitter.com/XMnLaWlT20 — Wisden (@WisdenCricket) October 20, 2024
Hadlee took 10-88 across the game, the last of his nine 10 wickets hauls over his career - a number only bettered by Shane Warne (10) and Muttiah Muralidaran (22). The six-for Hadlee took in India’s first innings ensured the match stayed even after New Zealand elected to bat and were bowled out for 236. They wouldn’t have reached that total without Bracewell, who made up for his ineffectiveness with the ball in Bengaluru with a half-century from No.9 in Mumbai. It was New Zealand’s highest score of the innings, after Bracewell had come in at 141-7.
India had been cruising on 134-2 before Hadlee had a belligerent Kris Srikkanth caught behind on 94 with a crafty leg-cutter. He bowled out his counterpart Kapil Dev cheaply and mopped up the lower-order in a hurry to end with 6-49 and grant his side two runs of breathing space.
Half-centuries for Andrew Jones and Ian Smith in New Zealand’s second innings, and 32 for Bracewell at No.10 were each key to setting up a hefty target of 282. Hadlee and Bracewell would make light work of India in tandem, Dev’s brief flurry of boundaries the only real resistance. The pair finished with 4-39 and 6-51 respectively and a 136-run victory was secured, their first in India since 1969.
The result was a bolt from the blue - a fact backed up by the Black Caps slumping to a 2-1 series defeat in the next game at Hyderabad. That win in 1988 was the final flourish abroad for a talented and determined side, many of them reaching the autumn years of their careers and retiring. But, that unlikely victory at the Wankhede capped off a string of landmark achievements for one of New Zealand’s most memorable sides, following on from a series-win in England in 1986 and toppling Australia at the Gabba the year before - a feat they have yet to repeat.
Among Test pacers, Hadlee’s match-winning haul is untouched in the four decades since, Dale Steyn’s 10-108 at Nagpur in 2010 the only bowling analysis that comes close in India. Staggeringly, his bowling average of 21.58 on the subcontinent is nearly a run better than the average he achieved across his career. Perhaps the Queen was paying attention to these unscalable heights he had attained - it was little over a year later that his knighthood arrived.

Former pakistan pm khan’s wife released on bail after nine months of incarceration.
https://arab.news/r96y6
- Bushra Bibi released from prison after securing bail in case related to sale of state gifts
- Rawalpindi prison authorities allow Imran Khan to meet lawyers in jail on court’s directions
ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, was released from the central prison in Rawalpindi on Thursday a day after being granted bail in a case related to the sale of state gifts, ending nine months of her detention while her husband met his legal team in jail on the high court’s directions. Bibi was released from jail after spending 265 days in the case after the Islamabad High Court granted her bail on Wednesday. Her release also takes place six months after an appeals court suspended a 14-year sentence the couple received after being found guilty of retaining and selling state gifts in violation of government rules when Khan was Pakistan’s prime minister. The former prime minister and his wife, however, were charged in July with new counts of retaining state gifts and kept in detention pending trial. Both deny any wrongdoing. “Bushra BiBi, the former first lady, has been released from prison,” Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party said in a statement. Following her release, Bibi traveled to her residence in Islamabad’s Bani Gala area in a motorcade from the jail, where she was greeted by the party’s charged supporters. KHAN MEETS LAWYERS IN PRISON Earlier on Thursday, the IHC directed Central Prison Rawalpindi’s administration to produce Khan in court by 3:00 p.m. to facilitate a meeting with his lawyers. “Bring Imran Khan to Islamabad High Court at 3 p.m. to arrange his meeting with his lawyers,” Justice Ijaz Ishaq Khan remarked during a hearing. “I know you won’t implement my orders, but let me issue directions.” The development followed Khan’s legal team moving the court, complaining that prison officials were preventing them and the ex-premier’s family from meeting him. Khan has been imprisoned for over a year, facing various charges, including corruption and sedition. The prison authorities did not present Khan before the court by 3 p.m. but allowed the PTI founder to meet his lawyers at the Rawalpindi prison. “Imran Khan is being kept in a six by eight cell [in the jail] and taken out of that cage for an hour and a half,” advocate Faisal Fareed told reporters after meeting Khan with PTI secretary-general Salman Akram Raja. Fareed said he would file a petition in the high court regarding the dismal condition in which Khan was being kept in jail. Currently, the former prime minister is incarcerated in the state repository case, involving the possession of a jewelry set comprising a ring, bracelet, necklace and earrings gifted to his wife by a foreign dignitary. The couple allegedly undervalued the set and retained it at a lower price. The judge’s remark to produce Khan in court came amid an ongoing tussle between the executive and the judiciary, with the latter accusing the country’s powerful military and intelligence agencies of exerting pressure to secure favorable verdicts in political cases, particularly those involving Khan. The military and intelligence agencies have denied these allegations, maintaining that they do not interfere in political matters. Khan has not physically appeared in a court since August last year, with all hearings being held in the high-security Rawalpindi prison due to security concerns. For the last two weeks, the Punjab government has banned all meetings with Khan and other prisoners in the jail, citing security reasons. Khan’s legal team has struggled to secure his release, arguing that all charges against him are fabricated to keep him out of politics.

Pakistan says US lawmakers’ letter calling for ex-PM Khan’s release ‘counterproductive’
Pakistan court grants bail to Imran Khan’s wife in state repository case
In pakistan’s first ai-enabled school, students come armed with cell phones instead of books.
- At Rehan School, students seek knowledge from Ted Talks, podcasts and video interviews
- Breaking free from traditional methods, pupils are encouraged to employ skills to earn money
KARACHI: Around a dozen students stay engrossed in their lessons in a brightly lit classroom in Karachi. But instead of poring over books or scribbling in their notebooks, they listen intently to podcasts on laptop screens in Pakistan’s first artificial intelligence-enabled school.
Founded in January 2022, Rehan School is part of Supertec Foundation, a corporate social responsibility initiative of the US-based telecommunication company, Super Technologies Inc. The school breaks free from traditional teaching methods and imparts knowledge via technological methods, employing AI to make educational content available in easy-to-learn videos for students.
The school has five campuses in total, two in Pakistan’s commercial hub of Karachi, one in eastern Khanewal city, one in Islamabad and an online school.
In a country where rote learning is employed in thousands of educational institutions and varsities seldom make use of teaching resources other than textbooks, Rehan School has ventured into unchartered territory by using podcasts, Ted Talks and AI tech to impart education.
“Our basic aim is to build confidence, to develop their skills and also to work on their listening power and communication skills, which can be developed through TEDx, interviews and Faceless [software],” Altaf Hussain, the principal of Rehan School’s Qur’angi campus in Karachi, told Arab News.
The two-story building is located in Karachi’s low-income Qur’angi Industrial area, surrounded by informal settlements and factories. But inside, it’s a different world altogether.
The principal’s office, for one, is themed after the International Space Station with its walls covered with a panaflex containing large images of planets and astronauts hovering in space.
“This room conveys the message that any child who comes to Rehan School will ascend in the future,” Hussain explained.
’THEY KNOW EVERYTHING’
Next to the principal’s office is a room for vice principals, one of whom is a student. Appointing a vice principal of the school from the 8-15 age bracket is aimed at instilling leadership qualities in the students, Hussain said.
“In the classroom, the responsibility of teaching lies with the students, not the teachers,” he said, adding that students are required to step into the role of a teacher for a week. Not only that, students are also encouraged to craft their own syllabi.
“Here children make their own syllabi, select their tasks and make their schedules themselves,” Misbah Altaf, one of the 25 teachers, or “facilitators” as they are known here, told Arab News.
“They know everything.”
At the school, students progress through eight levels, starting with activities designed to enhance public speaking and creative expression such as Ted Talk-themed presentations and interviews.
Before advancing to Level 2, each student must earn $100 through freelancing before advancing to the next level.
Another distinctive feature is the “Corridor of Inspiration,” which features plaques containing inspirational quotes from some of the world’s most famous personalities, such as Malala Yousafzai, Einstein or Mother Teresa.
’WASTING TIME, STUDYING OUTDATED MATERIAL’
And the students can’t have enough of the technology.
Parvaish Khan, 15, said she was taught by her mother and used the Internet to educate herself before studying at Rehan School.
“But after joining the school, I learned how to properly use it,” she told Arab News, adding that she was learning about prompt engineering, a practice for designing inputs for AI tools.
Khan showed Arab News her project, a website featuring interviews of notable figures.
For 13-year-old Abdul Ahad, the “bagless” Rehan School is a breath of fresh air. His previous school required him to bring several books that made him wear a heavy backpack.
“Now, we mostly just carry a laptop, a charger, a mobile phone, and the mobile charger— these are all we need,” Ahad said.
And he doesn’t miss his former school’s outdated methods either.
“Learning here made me realize that in my previous school, we were wasting time and studying outdated material, just memorizing to pass tests,” he said.

Pakistani security forces kill 19 militants in separate shootouts.
- Troops killed nine militants in the first overnight raid in Bajaur district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province
- Police said officers also shot and killed 10 militants in Mianwali, a district in the eastern Punjab province
PESHAWAR: Pakistani security forces faced off with insurgents in three separate shootouts, killing 19 militants, officials said Thursday.
Troops killed 9 militants in the first overnight raid in Bajaur, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the military said in a statement without providing further details. Weapons and ammunition were seized from a hideout in Bajaur which used to be a base for militants until many were killed or forced out in multiple security operations.
Meanwhile, police said an intense exchange of fire was still ongoing in another district, Dera Ismail Khan.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, in the volatile northwestern region that borders Afghanistan, is a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban.
Also on Thursday, police said in a statement officers shot and killed 10 militants in Mianwali, a district in the eastern Punjab province. No details about the slain insurgents were shared.
Pakistani Taliban in recent months have repeatedly attacked officers in Mianwali.
The TTP is a separate group but a close ally of the Afghan Taliban, who seized power in neighboring Afghanistan in 2021. The Taliban takeover next door has emboldened the
Pakistani Taliban who have stepped up attacks on Pakistani forces.
Pakistan urges citizens traveling to Iraq to exercise ‘extreme caution’ amid regional tensions
- Foreign office issues advisory hours after Turkiye strikes alleged militant targets in Iraq
- Turkiye bombs targets in Iraq in apparent retaliation of Wednesday’s Ankara attack
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s foreign office this week issued an advisory warning its citizens who intend on traveling to Iraq to exercise “extreme caution” after Turkiye struck alleged militant targets in the country and Syria.
The foreign office’s statement came hours after Turkiye’s Air Force said it struck Kurdish targets in Iraq and Syria in apparent retaliation for an attack on a state-run defense company that killed five people and wounded more than 20 in Ankara on Wednesday.
“In the developments in the region, Pakistani nationals planning to travel to Iraq are advised to exercise extreme caution until the situation stabilizes and airline operations return to normal,” the foreign office said in a statement on Thursday.
“For further information and facilitation, Pakistan Embassy in Baghdad can be contacted at the following contact numbers: +964-783 495 0311, +964- 772 997 7773.”
The latest surge in hostilities in the Middle East is a continuation of spiraling tensions in the region following Israel’s military campaigns in Palestine and Lebanon.
The Jewish state has killed over 42,000 people in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023 and also launched its full-scale military campaign against Hezbollah almost a year later. Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah has fired rockets into northern Israel in support of Palestinians.
More than 2,500 people have been killed in Lebanon since Israel’s fresh assaults, including 1,900 in the past five weeks, according to the country’s health ministry. Israeli authorities say 59 people have been killed in northern Israel and the occupied Golan Heights.
Pakistani actor Fawad Khan signs up for two dark comedy, crime thriller projects
- Khan to essay key role in a crime drama series based on Omar Shahid’s “The Prisoner”
- Actor enjoys heartthrob status in both India and Pakistan after string of successful hits
ISLAMABAD: Pakistani superstar Fawad Khan has ventured into two new upcoming projects, a crime thriller series and a dark comedy film, renowned American magazine Variety reported this week. Khan enjoys heartthrob status in both Pakistan and India and has played the lead in Bollywood hits “Khoobsurat” (2014) and “Kapoor & Sons” (2016). He also starred in “Ms. Marvel” (2022) and “The Legend of Maula Jatt” (2022), Pakistan’s biggest hit of all time. “Behind the Scenes, a newsroom thriller, is being developed by producers Bilal Sami, Raza Namazi and Suri Gopalan of Film Lab++, in collaboration with Khan,” Variety reported on Tuesday, adding that the announcement was made at the Tasveer Film Market in Seattle. The dark comedy will feature Mehreen Jabbar (Jackson Heights), Sarmad Khoosat (Joyland) and Mohammed Ali Naqvi (Insha’Allah Democracy) behind the camera, Variety said. Khan’s second project is a crime thriller series for the production company Awedacious Originals. The series is based on Omar Shahid’s bestseller, “The Prisoner,” in which he will play one of two daring cops who embark on a covert mission to topple Karachi’s powerful mafia-like political party. The drama has been created by Parisa Siddiqi and Ahmer Khan. Khan was last seen as the lead of the hit Zindagi series “Barzakh,” which debuted at Series Mania in 2023.
Smith, late wickets rescue England in third Pakistan Test
- England fight back to reduce Pakistan to 73-3 after being bowled out for 267
- Thirteen wickets fell on day one of dry and spin-friendly pitch at Rawalpindi
RAWALPINDI: England fought back to reduce Pakistan to 73-3 on the first day of the series-deciding third Test in Rawalpindi Thursday, after off-spinner Sajid Khan took six wickets. Sajid finished with 6-128 and left-arm spinner Noman Ali took 3-88 after a rearguard 89 by wicketkeeper Jamie Smith enabled England to recover to 267 from a precarious 110-5 at lunch. At the close, Pakistan captain Shan Masood and Saud Shakeel were both unbeaten on 16, with the home team trailing by 194 and the match in the balance. On a dry and spin-friendly Rawalpindi pitch, 13 wickets fell on day one with all but one going to spin bowlers. In the final session, England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir dismissed Abdullah Shafique for 14 and left-armer Jack Leach accounted for Saim Ayub who had made 19. Gus Atkinson was the only fast bowler to take a wicket, dismissing Kamran Ghulam for three.
“The pitch helped us for the first 25 overs, but when the ball got softer it was difficult to spin the ball,” said Sajid, who took nine wickets in the second Test victory in Multan. “Smith played a brilliant knock otherwise we could have got them out for under 200. We need a good first-innings lead to win this Test,” admitted Sajid. England were in huge trouble at 118-6 after they lost captain Ben Stokes in the third over of the second session, caught by Sajid for 12. But Smith, who reached his fifty off 94 balls, and Atkinson (39) added 105 for the seventh wicket to rescue their side.
Smith fell 11 runs short of his second Test century after enabling England to add 149 for their last four wickets. Smith smashed six towering sixes and five fours in his 119-ball knock before he was caught off a miscued slog against spinner Zahid Mahmood in the last over before tea. “I want to be someone who does well in all conditions, not just at home,” said Smith, who is playing his first Test series overseas. “To come out here and to put in that performance is quite pleasing.”
After tea, Sajid removed Rehan Ahmed for nine to complete his third five-wicket haul before also dismissing Leach for 16. The morning session was dominated by second Test heroes Sajid and Noman who bowled unchanged for 42 overs at the start of England’s innings. After England won the toss and opted to bat, Pakistan opened with the spin duo, who benefited from the parched pitch offering turn and low bounce from the first ball. It was only the fourth time in Test cricket history the new ball on the first morning had been taken by two spinners and the first time in Pakistan. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett raced to 56 in a confident start but England lost Crawley (29), Ollie Pope (three) and Joe Root (five) for just 24 runs to be 80-3. Noman had Crawley caught off a miscued drive while Sajid removed Pope and Root leg before. Duckett, who completed a half-century off 76 balls, was trapped lbw by Noman for 52 after hitting four fours and a six to leave England 98-4. That became 98-5 five balls later when first Test triple centurion Harry Brook was bowled behind his legs by Sajid for five attempting a sweep. Both teams included three spinners on a grassless pitch which the hosts dried with fans and heaters in the build-up. Sajid and Noman shared all 20 wickets in Pakistan’s second Test win to level the series at 1-1 after England won the first by an innings, with both matches taking place in Multan.
