Positive Thinking: We Should Always Be Positive Essay

Introduction, positive thinking.

Being positive is a belief or mental attitude that leads people to believe that good things happen in the end. Moreover, a person with such an attitude thinks that their efforts will be rewarded sooner or later. It is the opposite of negative thinking, which causes worry and anxiety in one’s mind. We should always try to be positive since this approach allows one to overcome challenges and difficulties more easily.

Positive thinking helps a person maintain a belief that despite the difficulties, they will succeed in life. According to Planck, “when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change” (as cited in Sturmberg, 2019, p. 3). This is simply another assertion in an ever-increasing avalanche of optimism. Today, people are bombarded with positive thinking, with self-help books, seminars, and workshops claiming that happiness starts with a good attitude. While this can be tiring if a person is not used to thinking positively, these self-help books outline an important point. Positive thinking allows one to feel good even when facing difficulties, which often cause pessimistic thoughts. Therefore, if one trains themselves to think positively all the time, they will be able to face difficult challenges.

In summary, people should always try to be positive and should train themselves to think in a positive manner. Positive thinking is a mindset that drives individuals to believe that a wonderful thing will happen in the end. Negative thinking, on the other hand, creates concern and anxiety. One should constantly strive to be optimistic since it makes it easier to overcome obstacles. Positive thinking enables one to feel good even while they are going through a challenging time, which might lead to negative thoughts.

Positive thinking: Stop negative self-talk to reduce stress

Positive thinking helps with stress management and can even improve your health. Practice overcoming negative self-talk with examples provided.

Is your glass half-empty or half-full? How you answer this age-old question about positive thinking may reflect your outlook on life, your attitude toward yourself, and whether you're optimistic or pessimistic — and it may even affect your health.

Indeed, some studies show that personality traits such as optimism and pessimism can affect many areas of your health and well-being. The positive thinking that usually comes with optimism is a key part of effective stress management. And effective stress management is associated with many health benefits. If you tend to be pessimistic, don't despair — you can learn positive thinking skills.

Understanding positive thinking and self-talk

Positive thinking doesn't mean that you ignore life's less pleasant situations. Positive thinking just means that you approach unpleasantness in a more positive and productive way. You think the best is going to happen, not the worst.

Positive thinking often starts with self-talk. Self-talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head. These automatic thoughts can be positive or negative. Some of your self-talk comes from logic and reason. Other self-talk may arise from misconceptions that you create because of lack of information or expectations due to preconceived ideas of what may happen.

If the thoughts that run through your head are mostly negative, your outlook on life is more likely pessimistic. If your thoughts are mostly positive, you're likely an optimist — someone who practices positive thinking.

The health benefits of positive thinking

Researchers continue to explore the effects of positive thinking and optimism on health. Health benefits that positive thinking may provide include:

  • Increased life span
  • Lower rates of depression
  • Lower levels of distress and pain
  • Greater resistance to illnesses
  • Better psychological and physical well-being
  • Better cardiovascular health and reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease and stroke
  • Reduced risk of death from cancer
  • Reduced risk of death from respiratory conditions
  • Reduced risk of death from infections
  • Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress

It's unclear why people who engage in positive thinking experience these health benefits. One theory is that having a positive outlook enables you to cope better with stressful situations, which reduces the harmful health effects of stress on your body.

It's also thought that positive and optimistic people tend to live healthier lifestyles — they get more physical activity, follow a healthier diet, and don't smoke or drink alcohol in excess.

Identifying negative thinking

Not sure if your self-talk is positive or negative? Some common forms of negative self-talk include:

  • Filtering. You magnify the negative aspects of a situation and filter out all the positive ones. For example, you had a great day at work. You completed your tasks ahead of time and were complimented for doing a speedy and thorough job. That evening, you focus only on your plan to do even more tasks and forget about the compliments you received.
  • Personalizing. When something bad occurs, you automatically blame yourself. For example, you hear that an evening out with friends is canceled, and you assume that the change in plans is because no one wanted to be around you.
  • Catastrophizing. You automatically anticipate the worst without facts that the worse will happen. The drive-through coffee shop gets your order wrong, and then you think that the rest of your day will be a disaster.
  • Blaming. You try to say someone else is responsible for what happened to you instead of yourself. You avoid being responsible for your thoughts and feelings.
  • Saying you "should" do something. You think of all the things you think you should do and blame yourself for not doing them.
  • Magnifying. You make a big deal out of minor problems.
  • Perfectionism. Keeping impossible standards and trying to be more perfect sets yourself up for failure.
  • Polarizing. You see things only as either good or bad. There is no middle ground.

Focusing on positive thinking

You can learn to turn negative thinking into positive thinking. The process is simple, but it does take time and practice — you're creating a new habit, after all. Following are some ways to think and behave in a more positive and optimistic way:

  • Identify areas to change. If you want to become more optimistic and engage in more positive thinking, first identify areas of your life that you usually think negatively about, whether it's work, your daily commute, life changes or a relationship. You can start small by focusing on one area to approach in a more positive way. Think of a positive thought to manage your stress instead of a negative one.
  • Check yourself. Periodically during the day, stop and evaluate what you're thinking. If you find that your thoughts are mainly negative, try to find a way to put a positive spin on them.
  • Be open to humor. Give yourself permission to smile or laugh, especially during difficult times. Seek humor in everyday happenings. When you can laugh at life, you feel less stressed.
  • Follow a healthy lifestyle. Aim to exercise for about 30 minutes on most days of the week. You can also break it up into 5- or 10-minute chunks of time during the day. Exercise can positively affect mood and reduce stress. Follow a healthy diet to fuel your mind and body. Get enough sleep. And learn techniques to manage stress.
  • Surround yourself with positive people. Make sure those in your life are positive, supportive people you can depend on to give helpful advice and feedback. Negative people may increase your stress level and make you doubt your ability to manage stress in healthy ways.
  • Practice positive self-talk. Start by following one simple rule: Don't say anything to yourself that you wouldn't say to anyone else. Be gentle and encouraging with yourself. If a negative thought enters your mind, evaluate it rationally and respond with affirmations of what is good about you. Think about things you're thankful for in your life.

Here are some examples of negative self-talk and how you can apply a positive thinking twist to them:

Practicing positive thinking every day

If you tend to have a negative outlook, don't expect to become an optimist overnight. But with practice, eventually your self-talk will contain less self-criticism and more self-acceptance. You may also become less critical of the world around you.

When your state of mind is generally optimistic, you're better able to handle everyday stress in a more constructive way. That ability may contribute to the widely observed health benefits of positive thinking.

essay on positive thinking in english

People sometimes say that they prefer to "look on the bright side" of a challenging situation or that they "see the cup as half full." Chances are good that the individuals who make these comments are positive thinkers, and they may be getting many benefits because of this approach.

Research is finding more and more evidence pointing to the many benefits of positive thinking and staying optimistic. Such findings suggest that not only are positive thinkers healthier and less stressed, but they also tend to have greater overall well-being and a higher level of resilience.

Benefits of Positive Thinking

Even if positive thinking doesn't come naturally, there are plenty of great reasons to start cultivating affirmative thoughts and minimizing negative self-talk .

Reduced Stress

When faced with stressful situations, positive thinkers cope more effectively than pessimistic thinkers—and with less anxiety and worry . Rather than dwelling on their frustrations or things that they cannot change, they will devise a plan of action and ask others for assistance and advice.

Pessimistic thinkers, on the other hand, are more likely to assume that the situation is out of their control. They often believe that there is nothing they can do to change it.

Increased Immunity

In recent years, researchers have found that the mind can have a powerful effect on the body. Immunity is one area where one's thoughts and attitudes can have a particularly powerful influence.

According to one published article, the more positive thoughts a person has, the better their ability to fight off disease. The authors also suggest that the opposite is true—the fewer positive thoughts a person has, the greater their disease risk.

Improved Wellness

Not only can positive thinking impact the ability to cope with stress and compromise immunity, but it also has an impact on overall well-being. Specifically, it is tied to a reduced risk of death from cardiovascular issues, lower depression risk , and an increased lifespan.

While researchers aren't entirely clear on why positive thinking benefits health, some suggest that positive people might lead healthier lifestyles. By coping better with stress and avoiding unhealthy behaviors, they are able to improve their health and well-being.

Better Resilience

Resilience refers to our ability to cope with problems. Resilient people are able to face a crisis or trauma with strength and resolve. Rather than falling apart in the face of such stress, they have the ability to carry on and eventually overcome such adversity.

Positive thinking can play a major role in resilience. When dealing with a challenge , optimistic thinkers typically look at what they can do to fix the problem. Instead of giving up hope, they marshal their resources and are willing to ask others for help.

By nurturing positive emotions, even in the face of terrible events, people can reap both short-term and long-term rewards, including managing stress levels , lessening depression, and building coping skills that will serve them well in the future.

When Positive Thinking May Not Be Helpful

Before trying to put on rose-colored glasses in every situation, it's important to note that positive thinking is not about taking a "Pollyanna" approach to life. In fact, in some instances, optimism might not be beneficial.

One instance is when it's unrealistic to be optimistic. As an example, someone who is unrealistically optimistic may not correctly evaluate their risk of developing a major disease such as cancer, causing them to engage in behaviors that further elevate their risk.

Instead of ignoring reality in favor of the silver lining, positive thinking centers on such things as a person's belief in their abilities, a positive approach to challenges, and trying to make the most of the bad situations .

Bad things can happen. Sometimes we will be disappointed or hurt by the actions of others. This does not mean that the world is out to get us or that all people will let us down. Instead, positive thinkers look at the situation realistically, search for ways that they can improve the situation, and try to learn from their experiences.

Introduction, theoretical foundations of positive thinking, psychological benefits of positive thinking, physical health benefits, impact on relationships and social interactions, challenges and critiques of positive thinking.

  • Learned Optimism : Seligman’s theory posits that optimism can be learned by altering explanatory styles—the way individuals explain events to themselves. He suggests that by interpreting setbacks as temporary and external, one can foster a more optimistic outlook.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Approaches: These approaches show how thought patterns can be changed to improve emotional and behavioral responses to everyday situations. Techniques such as cognitive restructuring involve identifying and challenging negative thoughts and replacing them with positive, realistic ones.
  • Stress and Coping: Research indicates that optimists cope better with stress by engaging in more active, problem-focused coping strategies. They are less likely to resort to denial and passive behaviors, which can exacerbate stress and its effects.
  • Depression and Anxiety: Studies have shown that a positive outlook can act as a buffer against depression and anxiety, reducing both the likelihood and severity of these conditions.
  • Immune System Function: Positive emotions and thoughts have been linked to better immune response. For example, a study by Cohen et al. (2003) found that individuals with a positive emotional style had greater resistance to the common cold.
  • Cardiovascular Health: Optimism correlates with various health benefits, including lower blood pressure and reduced risk of heart disease. The Harvard School of Public Health conducted a study revealing that the most optimistic participants had a nearly 30% lower risk of dying from heart diseases.
  • Social Connectivity: Optimistic individuals often exhibit behaviors that enhance social connectivity, such as being more trusting and cooperative, which can lead to more robust social networks.
  • Conflict Resolution: Positivity in approach helps in resolving conflicts more constructively, emphasizing reconciliation and solutions rather than problems.
  • Unrealistic Optimism: Excessive optimism can lead to underestimating risks and overestimating one’s abilities, which might result in poor decision-making.
  • Critique from Realism: Some argue that positive thinking may overshadow realistic appraisals of situations, leading to inadequate responses to actual challenges.

This essay demonstrates the comprehensive benefits of positive thinking while also considering its limitations and the importance of a balanced, realistic perspective.

The Power of Positive Thinking

Many people tend to evaluate events that do not correspond to their plans and the usual picture of the world as an obstacle that prevents achieving the goal. In turn, people who practice positive thinking in such situations see the problem as an opportunity on the road to success, not an obstacle. Thus, positive thinking is the ability to evaluate life not from the point of view of problems, but from the position of a series of successful coincidences that inevitably lead to improvements. A person involuntarily falls into a whirlpool of negative emotions and thoughts in the modern world, filled with alarming information, high turbulence with economic crises, natural disasters, and pandemics. Therefore, nowadays, in the face of the spread of a pandemic, positive thinking is essential since this will allow one to be less irritated and constantly radiate inner harmony and success.

A positive attitude becomes the cause of positive emotions, including joy, love, and happiness. A positive-minded person has better relationships with family, friends, and society in general. Moreover, it is an opportunity to get rid of fears and doubts and to increase stress resistance (Time 45). If you regularly practice positive thinking, you can get rid of many diseases caused by negative attitudes. Furthermore, optimists have been proven to live longer. People who have a positive outlook and attitude are more productive in their work (Time 47). They can find constructive ways to solve problem situations, be ready to give and receive support, be grateful, and know how to cooperate with other people.

The environment shapes the worldview and spiritual aspirations of each person. An optimistic society charged with cheerfulness and love of life encourages people to reach new heights and inspires experiments and creativity. Pessimistic society, on the contrary, discourages any desire to change anything in their lives. A critical mood-creating agent is the media, which, while transmitting patterns of behavior of the population in some regions, automatically create these patterns in others (Hasson 32). For example, information has been circulating on the Internet for a year that ivermectin is effective for the treatment or prevention of coronavirus. Although US, UK, and EU health authorities have found insufficient evidence of the drug’s use for COVID-19, thousands of supporters continue to campaign for its use. Forcing the situation creates panic, fear, isolation, and uncertainty contributes to the emergence of stress, a drop in immunity, and health problems. Nevertheless, although a person has no power to change the situation in the world, one can change their attitude towards this. It is essential to understand that any destruction leads to new opportunities.

Voice and manner of speaking contain preliminary information about the communication partner. By the volume of speech, its speed, clarity, voice pitch, and color of its sound, one can understand the inner state of the interlocutor. Speech is vital for forming a worldview; therefore, a persons’ mood depends on what emotions they will be saturated with. People who hear a rough or tired voice perceive the speaker negatively as weak, passive, or tense (Hasson 44). In turn, speakers with uplifting voices appear to be successful, pleasant, and intelligent. The peculiarity of positive speech is that it is unambiguous, goal-oriented, and therefore successful. It makes a good impression on all its participants and creates clarity, independence, and mutual respect. In this way, everything people say reflects what they think and how they think.

As for me, I try to be guided by the principles of positive thinking, although this was not always the case. Routine activities, the need to study and carry out household chores were a burden on my nervous system and did not allow me breathing deeply. But the fact was that it was not problems and obligations that pressed on me, but I perceived it that way. I drove myself into the framework of monotony and routine. Nevertheless, now I start my day with a smile and the affirmation that today is the best day of my life. I tried to find any excuse for joy, be it a high score, good music, or just sunny weather. Of course, at first, I had to force myself to think about the good, but every day this tension decreased, and soon I began to see the good automatically. I became a glass half-full person, who, according to Johnstone, always thinks that good things will happen (156). Now, if some failure occurs in my life, I do not dwell on the negative but try to transform it into a helpful experience that brings me new knowledge and makes me stronger.

Therefore, positive thinking does not mean completely ignoring failures and adverse events; after all, this is an experience that will allow one not to make mistakes in the future. People who think positively will also be upset but quickly come to their senses, perceive the event as an experience, and move on. In current conditions, when many adverse events occur in the world, it is crucial to maintain the ability to think positively to achieve success in life.

One day the teacher took both his disciples to a garden where they came across a mango tree. The tree had many juicy and ripe mangoes hanging from it. He then called the first student, who had an auspicious and positive vision, to look at the tree carefully and then speak about his thoughts about the tree. The students replied that the tree was magnanimous as it was constantly being hit by people with stones to get fruits, yet it was benevolent and gave back sweet and delicious mangoes to all those who hit the tree. The students further said that from this tree we can learn that we must share our treasure even if we hurt or suffer.

The teacher was very pleased with this answer and he called the second student after that. This disciple had a negative state of mind and after looking at the tree he concluded that the tree was useless. He said that by itself the tree does not do anything but only after people hit it with sticks or stones does it bestow fruits on them. He concluded that if we have to gain something from someone, violence is the only means to do that.

The teacher was disheartened to hear the second student's version and praised and blessed the first student wholeheartedly. Essay on “Positive Thinking” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

Positive Thinking

Positive thinking is the belief that good things will happen and that one’s efforts will be crowned with success. It is something diametrically opposed to negative thinking which is being fearful, apprehensive and unsure of success in efforts positive thinking is based on optimism, hope and belief that hard work is never wasted. The effects of positive thinking are magical. Psychologists believe that nothing gears up people to make whole hearted efforts to perform some task as positive thinking.

The felling tones up every muscle  of the body and activates every nerve of the mind for a perfect coordination between the body and the mind to do the job when hope enlivens a human being; his / her efforts become coursed and earnest. The vision of achievement and the glory or appreciation associated with it propels a person to work in such a way that no stone is left unturned to achieve the desired goal.

Positive thinking helps a person find a way in a difficult task or a tough situation. He starts feeling that something can be done to overcome the difficulties that are looming large at that moment. It is said that a serious person finds a way, while an idler finds an excuse. The difference between these two is that of attitude of being hopeful or being without hope. A however  difficult the task. He puts in earnest endeavors. He may get favour of luck, and help may come from unexpected quarters. On the other hand,  person who loses hope can never make a whole – hearted effort. His battle is half lost even before the start.

It is said that life is not a bed of roses. Each person has to face difficult situation in his life. If one becomes fearful and apprehensive about the results, feelings of frustration, depression  and disappointment will enter his mind and hinder his normal faculties of working. He may even end up poorer than he actually is. In the present age of tough completion nothing is given by the world on a platter.

Those who do not put in the required amount of efforts are left behind to suffer and repent. ‘ Hope sustains life’ is an old, time tested adage. It accentuates the importance of positive  thinking. If you do not think positively you may lose the initiative to do well to achieve your objectives. Positive thinking builds will power. People have reached dizzy heights by sheer will power supported by hard work. When there is will there is a way is not an idle statement. It contains a lot of substance is a way is not an idle statement. It contains a lot of substance.

History is full of examples that show that people have achieved amazing results by perseverance and positive attitude. Kind Bruce of Scotland could   not free his land despite many efforts. He had to run away and hide in a cave. He saw a spider who was trying to reach the roof. It made nine attempts but each time it fell just before making it. It tried again and succeeded to reach the roof. King Bruce learnt a great lesson of keeping the hope alive. He made a concerted attempt and was able to free his land. Columbus had no money or fleet of ships to make a voyage across the globe. But he was sure that one day he will be able to realize his dream.

He approached many people for help. Ultimately, the kind of Italy helped him. He made his historic voyage and discovered America. Louis Pasteur saw people dying of dog bite –with rabies. He was sure that he would prepare a vaccine to fight this malady. He worked hard and prepared anti – rabies vaccine Humanity owes him a lot to save the lives of millions who  have been treated of rabies all over the world. When India won the Cricket World Cup in 1983, the West Indies team was the strongest in the world. India’s defeated it even after scoring only 183 runs batting first. India’s captain Kapil Dev told his teammates that anything is possible in cricket. If we fight hard keep self- belief, we may win the match. And it actually happened. India became the champions.

The feat was repeated by the young Indian side under M.S. Dhoni’s captaincy to win the Twenty – 20 World Cup. Abraham Lincoln fought many elections in a row. He could not win even a single election. But hope sprang  eternal in him. He contested the presidential election and own. He became the president of America. Such examples are endless. All of them go on to show the major role positive thinking plays in our success. It is pertinent to mention here that mere positive thinking without putting in the required amount  of effort will not lead to success.

We need to make a proper assessment of the task in hand, prepare a plan of action finding, the right method to perform it, and then make an integrated Endeavour. Applying wrong methods even with positive thinking will result into the failure. Depending entirely on hope or unexpected help or a stroke of luck is foolishness not positive thinking.

Hope is secondary to efforts. Positive thinking therefore essentially mean to be hopeful of a good result after making the required effort. It is an attitude to go for the performance confident of success in a difficult situating hoping that even are such a situation can be controlled if we do what it takes. Efforts are the base on which hope is built; without the required amount of efforts, Endeavour or hard work – whatever you call it, no one can be sure of success.

An important question that arises in this regard is : is positive thinking an inherent characteristic of a person or can it be developed in one’s psyche? The opinions differ in answering  this vital question.

Some people believe that it can be inherited from parents, and cannot be developed. Others believe that like other qualities it can be developed with proper practice and guidance. Still some to her hold the opinion that it is hereditary to some extent  but can acquired to some degree. There is also a section of people who believe that all depends on circumstances or luck some people are born lucky. They get success with minimum effort; other don’t get it even after greatest of Endeavour. There are,  thus, various theories and opinions based on one’s experience and knowledge.

We need to adopt a scientific approach to find an answer to the above question. No one can get success every time even after making efforts, nor can one fail constantly. Moreover success has different meanings for different people. For some students getting 60 per cent marks is success, for other it may not be sufficient. In a competitive examination success means getting selected, whatever the percentage of marks.

As for inheritance theory, since positive attitude is not a physical feature but a mental faculty it cannot be purely hereditary. It can be developed. Moreover, parents play a major role in a child developing this quality. A child who watches his parents work hard, showing hope of success through their words,. Behavior and body language is likely to develop a similar attitude.

The children of short tempered, over cautious and nervous parents may assume these characteristics when then grow up. Psychologists therefore prescribe a code of conduct for parents’ behaviors in front of their offspring. They must exude confidence, self – belief and hope, especially in difficult situation , so that the children emulate these qualities. They must be taught the importance of being positive before , during and after the performance of a task. There is no better education for a child than watching his/her parents come out of a tough situation by means of earnest endeavors.  Such success not only gives more joy, increases self- confidence and acts as an object lesson for children and younger members in the family.

The role of teachers in building the confidence of students and telling them about the importance of positive thinking is also vital; the teachers encourage hard work by appreciating and rewarding those who make it. They rebuke and warn those who are not serious in their studies. They tell students about the various ways in which they can improve their shoreline. Prizes, certificates, awards, etc,. are  aimed at appreciating hard work that precedes good performance.

In the modern age of science there are many other ways like yoga, meditation,  exercises, reading of inspiring books which can relieve us of tension, worry and make us relaxed and hopeful.
