Cast - Sudheer Babu, Bharath Niwas, Srikanth, Chitra Shukla, Mounika Reddy, others

Director - Mahesh

Producer - V Ananda Prasad

Banner - Bhavya Creations

Music - Ghibran

Sudheer Babu isn’t new to cop roles. He shined as a police officer in Nani and Indraganti’s V as well. But as ACP Arjun Prasad he attempts something new and different, probably something he hadn’t done before. This makes the Hunt interesting. He is joined by Bharat and Srikanth. Has Sudheer made a successful comeback? Is his Hunt impressive? Let’s dig deep to know.

Arjun Prasad (Sudheer Babu), an Assistant Commissioner Of Police, is handling high-profile broad-daylight murder of his fellow ACP and close friend Aryan Dev (Bharath). He loses his memory in a road accident and he rejoins the office with help of another friend and his superior Mohan (Srikanth). As Arjun tries to unravel the mystery surrounding his close friend’s murder, a shocking truth comes out. The film is a mission to find out the real killer and his motive.

Performances

Sudheer Babu has got a role which has a lot of scope. Largely, he justifies. He once again proves he is a game for action stunts. His shirtless physique and intense workouts are jaw-dropping and inspiring. Srikanth as well-wisher and friend is alright. Bharat (Premisthe fame) appears to be a miscast for the role. Mime Gopi gets wasted in a shallow and unevolved role. Kabir Singh as a military man and his episode fails to connect. Mounika Reddy is alright as a fellow cop in Sudheer’s team. Goparaju Ramana as senior policeman Murthy is passable. Chitra Shukla as Aryan Dev’s girlfriend Nivetha has a plot twist at the end. Aryan Dev’s family is just filler.

Technicalities

Hunt has a simple plot to reveal a murder mystery. It has a back-and-forth screenplay that works in parts. The initial half has some tense moments. Whereas the second-half goes haywire. First-time director Mahesh Surapaneni gets only half-right. Music composer Ghibran doesn’t disappoint with his background score. Whereas the item number of Apsara Rani that is aimed to give relief in serious proceedings failed to entertain. It involved story progress, but the song and placement puts off. Arul Vincent camera work and Prawin Pudi’s editing get it right.

Okay First Half Some Tense Moments Initial Investigation Scenes

Thumbs Down

Emotionless Friendship Uncanny Murder Motive Lacks Gripping Second Half

Hunt is the remake of Mumbai Police. Though the makers have hidden this to not reveal the spoilers, the moment the film begins it is pretty evident that it is a remake of the 2013 crime thriller Mumbai Police. The original worked as it was a rare trick that was played on the protagonist’s story. However, this is made a decade later i.e in 2023. Now audiences are smarter and good at guessing. The audiences may not guess the motive of Hunt if the original isn’t watched. But guessing the thriller is not a big deal. This is why making a crime thriller is highly challenging until and unless the makers rework heavily on the dots and how they connect. Sadly, Hunt fails to score here.

There are two major problems with the Hunt. One, why should the audience take Aryan Dev’s murder case seriously. The director Mahesh failed to establish how crucial it is. The lack of emotional bond between 3 friends and their friendship. The second major problem is with the suspects. None of the initial suspects (Colonel Vikram Singh or Roy) in the murder are serious enough to feel they are suspicious in the murder of Aryan Dev. And there is a long terror sequence that comes in the middle to give a terror touch. This is completely off from the main narrative. It looks out of place. And there is a sequence in flashback where police and army fight. This whole episode is silly and fails to connect. Though there are flaws, the initial investigation scenes are intense. Some moments have worked here and there. All the action scenes are shot well. Sudheer Babu offers his usual action treat.

The narrative in the second-half goes for a complete toss. The momentum that is there in the first half isn’t sustained in the second-half thus resulting in a non-gripping latter half. Director Mahesh couldn’t make it work here. The film suffered from the second-half syndrome. There is a shocking element in the climax. This is a very brave attempt since no mainstream hero does it. Sudheer Babu deserves appreciation for accepting this. However, this may not be comfortable with the large section of the audience. This shocking twist of murder motive may only struck chords with limited people. Probably, this should have been shown in a more subtle way. Also, there are some repetitive scenes owing to the back-and-forth screenplay which require a more effective way of narration. Hunter is not a typical crime thriller and it has its shortcomings. This is not a complete hunt. It makes one expect more and better from Sudheer Babu and the makers.

Bottom-line: Misfired Hunt

Rating: 2.25/5

Hunt review: Sudheer Babu’s slowburn thriller is worthy of your time

A remake of the Malayalam hit Mumbai Police, the film works better as a psychological drama than as a thriller

Hunt review: Sudheer Babu’s slowburn thriller is worthy of your time

  • Srivathsan Nadadhur

Last Updated: 01.19 PM, Jan 26, 2023

Arjun Prasad, a cop, while investigating the murder of his colleague Aryan Dev, is injured in an accident and suffers from partial memory loss. He has little clue about his case or his past and is on a quest to understand himself better every passing day. While he gathers the courage and gets back to work, the case takes him back to many dark corners in his life. His counterpart, Mohan Bhargav, stands by his side in the hour of crisis.

Even as the debate around the feasibility of remakes in the OTT era rages on, Hunt, a Telugu remake of a popular Malayalam cop thriller Mumbai Police, tries its luck at the theatres today. Beyond labels like remakes/adaptations, the basic purpose of cinema remains to tell a good story and to entertain - Hunt is successful in that pursuit. It respects your intelligence, boasts of absorbing drama, a taut screenplay and is spearheaded by strong performances.

image_item

Hunt has an additional layer of appeal because its protagonist isn’t only after a killer in a case, he’s on a quest to discover himself after a fatal accident. He has a colourful, partly notorious past and the partial memory loss gives him a chance to start on a clean slate again. It provides him an opportunity for self reflection and it’s not an easy path - he unearths a different piece of the puzzle each day, forcing him to confront his inner demons.

The true victor in Hunt is the nuanced writing and the alluring characterisation. The three pivotal characters have distinct journeys, conflicts and moments to shine. It looks at cops from a humane dimension, delving deep into their professional and personal lives and doesn’t reduce them to heroic caricatures. Keeping its thriller exterior intact, Hunt also makes you to look at the loneliness in a cop’s life, their need for identity at work and companionship too.

The mood of the film is largely morose (could’ve done with more liveliness), the treatment is understated and the mysteries are more internal than external. More than a whodunit, Hunt works as a psychological drama. The screenplay, alternating between the present and the past of Arjun is one of its major strengths. The action choreography is slick and diverse and lends a larger-than-life appeal to the narrative.

The only dance number in Hunt serves as a speedbreaker, but one can’t deny its appeal - Ghibran makes sure that the occasional indulgence doesn’t hurt the film.

The ending isn’t sensationalised and remains true to the spirit of the story. The fact that a mainstream actor Sudheer Babu has trusted Telugu audiences to accept an out-of-the-box story like Hunt indicates that times are changing . The film is focused when it doesn’t turn into an advertisement of his ripped physique.

Sudheer Babu presents the various complexities within Arjun Prasad with an earnestness that’s hard to ignore. Srikanth couldn’t have asked for a better role to suit his persona and age, while Bharath’s comeback is equally impressive. The supporting cast, including Chitra Shukla, Mounika Reddy, Mime Gopi, Kabir Duhan Singh, Goparaju Ramana, Manjula, do justice to their brief roles. Abhijeeth Poondla’s extended appearance could’ve been less hysterical.

Ghibran’s expertise with action thrillers helps Hunt and the makers ensure that the technical appeal of the product isn’t compromised. Director Mahesh Surapaneni doesn’t tinker with the soul of the original and extracts fine contributions from his capable cast, crew. Hunt isn’t your average murder mystery, it takes time to create its ambience and is a compelling package of several complex interpersonal conflicts.

Look at Hunt beyond the label of a remake to recognise its worth. Stories revolving around a character’s psychological quest are a rarity in Telugu cinema and director Mahesh Surapaneni uses this opportunity responsibly, while respecting the source material. Sudheer Babu, Srikanth and Bharath get ample scope to shine in the nuanced thriller-drama with layered characters and a gripping screenplay.

Hunt Movie Review: A relentlessly paced, high-voltage thriller

Rating: ( 3.5 / 5).

When I heard Squid Game actor Lee Jung-jae was making his directorial debut, I was curious to see whether he would make a serious, emotionally overpowering drama or a thriller. Having seen what he has done in his maiden feature, Hunt , I can report that the answer is the latter. I must also say I was amazed because Hunt feels like the work of someone with enough directing experience under his belt. Set in the 80s against the backdrop of the North Korea-South Korea tensions, Hunt is an espionage thriller loaded with many nail-biting scenarios, considering it revolves around the operations of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA -- now known as the National Intelligence Service). Lee Jung-jae is Park Pyong-ho, the chief of the foreign unit of KCIA, and Jung Woo-sung is Kim Jung-do, head of the domestic one.

Director: Lee Jung-jae Cast: Lee Jung-jae, Jung Woo-sung, Jeon Hye-jin, Heo Sung-tae Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video There is no question of Jung-jae's skills as a filmmaker as he sure knows how to hook us: a mere five minutes into the film, we get an assassination attempt followed immediately by a wild shootout. This prologue also gives us a sense of the underlying tension in the Park-Kim dynamic, which worsens as the film progresses, ultimately getting to a point where the two get into a high-intensity fistfight, the details of which fall under the spoilers section. At least three fiery gun battles had me going, 'Wow!' Hunt is restless from the get-go. While not throwing its characters into gunfights and explosions, it pauses for office politics and spy games. But these are just short intervals -- too brief that you yearn for some breathing space to ponder the complex behind-the-scene machinations before moving on to the following action setpiece. But it's also admirable that these sequences bring forth new plot revelations instead of existing just for the sake of spectacle. It produces the cumulative effect of watching an offspring of The Departed and The Bourne Ultimatum. Or imagine the high moments of a Christopher Nolan thriller -- say, the opera sequence of Tenet or the SWAT ambush in The Dark Knight -- dialled up to a hundred, complete with a rousing background score. But Hunt is also that film which, despite its placement against the backdrop of Korean and U.S political games, asks you to suspend your disbelief in multiple places. There are instances where I wondered why the agents of a powerful intelligence organisation didn't take safety precautions before running into gunfire. Perhaps this was an intentional creative choice to increase the body count -- and Hunt registers a large number in that department. Moreover, as someone with only a rudimentary understanding of Korean history, I wondered whether the makers followed the details of actual events to a T or whether they had opted for some creative liberties. I believe the latter is the case. After all, this is a work of entertainment, and Hunt delivers that in spades. With a film like this, occasional doubts are natural when the pacing is relentless -- the screenplay hops furiously from one plot development to another. One also questions the inclusions of a few last-minute twists that, while succeeding at catching you off guard, seem like afterthoughts. But these are minor shortcomings in an otherwise well-made film, even if everything doesn't always make sense. With the number of characters and events populating the film, all complimented by hyperkinetic camera work, Hunt often feels like an epic war movie. We get gun battles that rival those in a Michael Mann film or any Johnnie To thriller in terms of the pure exhilaration they offer. It also succeeds remarkably at creating the same sense of urgency we saw in the first three Jason Bourne films, particularly Ultimatum . I was surprised that the film managed introspective moments between the onslaught of all the chaos and mayhem. It helps to have talented actors like Lee Jung-jae and Jung Woo-sung in the forefront because they sell their characters' angst, confusion, and rage so well. Hunt is, for me, one of the best action thrillers of the year, warts and all.

Now streaming on:

"Squid Game" Emmy winner Lee Jung-jae stars and directs this week's explosive blockbuster "Hunt," a film about double and triple crosses in a spy game between North and South Korea in the 1980s. About halfway through Lee's film, I realized I had completely lost the thread of who was a good guy and who was a bad guy, but I think that's intentional. This film is about men in well-tailored suits who must constantly determine if the armed fellow next to them is on their side or possibly fighting for the enemy. While some of the action sequences are well-staged, particularly the final explosive one, the convoluted screenplay by Jo Seung-Hee collapses under the weight of so much deception. "Hunt" has some excellent bang-bang escapism, but it's ultimately too shallow to recommend.

Lee plays Park Pyong-ho, a South Korean officer who is seen foiling an assassination attempt in the explosive opening scene, but his fellow officer Kim Jung-do (Jung Woo-sung) shoots the suspect, meaning they can't get to the bottom of the plot. Was this intentional? Is he hiding something the gunman might have revealed? "Hunt" sets up early on that there's a North Korean mole in the operation and wants us to keep guessing if it's Pyong-ho or Jung-do behind the espionage as the two men with a shared violent past also become increasingly suspicious of one another.

That's about it, but it leads to dozens of sequences of shifting loyalties, usually intercut with violent action. Accusations—explosions—accusations—gunfire—accusations ... you get the idea. It all gets a little exhausting, and Lee's non-stop hyperactive cutting and moving camera don't help. He shoots many of the dialogue-driven scenes with the same frantic feeling as the action. This is the twisting narrative of something like " Infernal Affairs " (which was remade as " The Departed ") but without the craft and ten times the chaos. It becomes an increasingly difficult film to care about narratively, and Lee's admittedly ambitious eye for action doesn't compensate.

There are reasons to hope Lee's sophomore effort might be stronger. He's clearly a strong director of performers, as Jung is particularly good here—I found his shifting loyalty and presence more interesting than Lee's. And, again, when bullets start to fly, the film sometimes attains a gritty action nihilism like the films from the era in which it takes place. There's a harsh realism to some of the action scenes as bodies fly, and sets get ripped apart by bullets. It's not that modern, overly stylized action aesthetic that was spawned by so many "John Wick" imitators as much as something that feels like it's dangerously unfolding in front of you.

The problem is that it's impossible to even keep track of who's getting shot. When all the bodies have fallen, there are a couple of memorable scenes in "Hunt"—a sequence with a potential defector is expertly assembled, and the final major one is a beauty—but you'll have trouble remembering much of the plot. Of course, that's presuming you could follow it in the first place.

'Hunt' movie review: A functional remake but a brave attempt

A still from the movie

The purpose of remakes has been a question for years and their utility and value came under severe scrutiny in the recent past after streaming platforms increased the accessibility of films by leaps and bounds. Naturally, a remake of a proven film is certainly not a hot commodity anymore, like it used to be, say, a decade ago. Hunt, the official remake of Mumbai Police, a brave Malayalam film that made people turn their heads in 2013, is hitting screens a decade late but it still remains a daring attempt in the Telugu space.

Hunt is releasing at an interesting but conflicting time. On one hand, there has been a significant inclination towards fresher stories (as long as they are engaging) among the audience, bestowing Hunt a huge advantage. On the other hand, remakes are having a tough time justifying their existence with the audience gradually overcoming the “1-inch-tall barrier”.

hunt movie review in tamil

Many questions pop up: Why did it take 10 years to remake a hit film? Does it mean Telugu cinema is lagging behind Malayalam cinema by 10 years? Hunt can be used as a specimen in this case study to evaluate where Telugu cinema and its audience stand, and answer these questions. Personally, I am finding the peripheral prospects of Hunt and what they indicate more interesting than the actual film, which is a functional and mostly engaging investigative drama by itself.

Thanks to Mumbai Police and Bobby-Sanjay’s screenplay structure that keeps the audience guessing, revealing and holding back just what’s needed, Hunt still manages to be an interesting investigative drama. ACP Arjun Prasad, (Sudheer Babu) meets with an accident minutes after solving the murder case of his colleague and friend Aryan (Bharath Nivas) and wakes up with no memory of his past. His close friend and senior, Mohan (Srikanth) encourage him to retrace the clues and solve the crime again. It is a lip-smacking premise with an equally brilliant screenplay and Mahesh, the director of the remake, adapts Mumbai Police as a mainstream actioner.

hunt movie review in tamil

That’s both a boon and a bane. For instance, a case involving terrorists (Maoists in the original), which triggers a key plot point, is just verbally explained in Malayalam where it is fleshed out as two separate action sequences. Similarly, an entire new thread is derived from this point, just to create a red herring and, of course, spring another action sequence from it.

Some action sequences work better than the rest and honestly, there is a style and method in these sequences that are seldom found in Telugu films. Arjun, for instance, fights more like a trained police officer and less like a Telugu film hero who can make poor fighters fly with a punch. In that sense, one particular sequence set in a dark den shot in long stretches like a video game is superbly choreographed and shot; Arul Vincent’s dynamic cinematography complements Sudheer’s moves. It is perhaps dexterity of some extent in these choices that compensates for the ‘commercialisation’ of the story.

Apart from a special dance number, none of these choices hinder the flow of the film. The film takes its time to get rolling (although the conflict is introduced right in its opening scene) and we start feeling the seriousness of the stakes and the twists only after the halfway mark, after familiarising ourselves with the characters. The way it leads up to the final reveal and how it plays out is perhaps the best part of the film. Sudheer too holds up effectively in these long stretches.

Considering it had an opportunity, I wish Hunt fixed some issues of the original, instead of simply mimicking. For example, more clarity could have been offered on the timeline of events surrounding the reveal and lead-up to Aryan’s death. Likewise, the ‘change’ Aryan goes through in his arc could have been spelled out better in the remake since this remains vague in the original too.

Moreover, I really wish one of the film’s core themes, friendship, was not just reduced to dialogues and was explored further. Featuring a never-before-seen twist ending in Telugu cinema, Hunt is a brave attempt despite being a remake, especially considering it is wrapped in the body of a mainstream action thriller. Although I wish it was a Telugu original, the crude, homophobic remarks passed by the audience on the single screen where I watched the film clearly answer why Telugu cinema won’t try something as ballsy. So I am just glad Hunt took that risk.

Sudheer Babu’s suspense action thriller Hunt is in theatres on Thursday, 26 January. The film also features Tamil actor Bharat and senior hero Srikanth in key roles.

In the pre-release events, Sudheer Babu claimed no one had made a film like it in Telugu to date. Let’s find out if this was just hype or whether this hunt actually packs a punch.

Young police officers Arjun Prasad (Sudheer Babu) and Aryan Dev (Bharat) are close friends. But their friendship gets cut short when Aryan Dev — an ACP — is shot dead.

A deeply hurt Arjun now takes it upon himself to find the killer.

When Arjun is all set to nab Aryan’s killers, fate strikes in the form of an accident. As a result, he suffers from memory loss.

Arjun nabbing his friend’s killers despite his seriously debilitating memory loss condition is what Hunt is all about.

Meanwhile, there is also another angle to the story, but the director fails to handle it well. It is better if the audience gets to know about it while watching the movie.

How intense is Hunt?

When it comes to the story, Hunt takes a path similar to many suspense and cop action flicks.

The movie also religiously follows the tricks and twists of police action flicks. But one novel aspect is the memory loss twist.

How Arjun tackles memory loss and recreates the whole scene in his hunt for criminals, gives scope to offer a new kind of cop action thriller for the audience.

But director Mahesh Surapaneni only partly exploits the potential in the story.

A slow first half and shortcomings in screenplay play spoilsport. As a result, Hunt turns into just another suspense thriller.

The performances

Either in terms of looks or acting, Sudheer Babu has done his job well. Roles like these are a perfect fit for him.

Most of the movie revolves around his character, and he manages to keep the audience engaged.

He needs to be praised for trying a challenging and risky role. More support from the script would have made this a hit flick.

Tamil actor Bharat is familiar to the Telugu audience, too. Though he gets limited screen space, he gets a do a crucial role.

It is good to see Bharat — a talented actor — in a Telugu film after a long time.

Senior hero Srikanth, who is slowly shifting to character roles, plays a senior police officer with ease.

Mounika Reddy also gets a decent role to play, and she is in fine form.

An unforgettable experience for me and I hope it is for all of you! All set for the HUNT? 👊🏻 See you at the cinemas & Happy Republic Day!! 🇮🇳 pic.twitter.com/8k7VF5yAE2 — SudheerBabu – #HuntFrom26Jan (@isudheerbabu) January 26, 2023

Technical crafts

There is just one song in the movie, and that too is passable. However, Ghibran has done a decent job in terms of the background score.

Arul’s cinematography is in tune with the cop suspense thriller genre.

The makers of Hunt proudly claimed that Hollywood stunt choreographer Renaud Favero worked on the action sequences.

But we don’t understand what value addition he has done to the movie.

One big letdown is editing. A gripping narration is indispensable for cop flicks like these.

Hunt seems to be lacking in many other aspects.

Editor Pravin Pudi should have made the necessary changes to keep the movie shorter and more engaging.

Hunt is a decently made movie that has both shortcomings and impressive moments. But, in these days of content explosion, it has turned out to be just another cop-action thriller.

Hunt Review & Ratings | Hit or Flop?

Hunt Review:  Sudheer Babu kept choosing some experimental scripts from the start of his career, but somehow failing to entertain audience and unable to reach larger section of audience. After the disaster ‘Aa Ammayi Gurinchi Meeku Cheppali’ he is back with an action drama ‘Hunt’. Hunt released today in theatres on occasion of Republic Day. Let us get into the detailed review of this movie to know if Sudheer Babu is able to get the much needed success with this movie.

Hunt Review

Table of Contents

Assistant Commissioner Aryan Dev is murdered and the case is handed over to Arjun Prasad, a very honest police officer. During the investigation Arjun Prasad meets with an accident and forgets the past. In order to solve Aryan Dev’s case Arjun needs to recall what happened that leads to many twists and turns.

Cast & Crew

Hunt movie stars Sudheer Babu in the lead role, while Srikanth Meka, Bharath Niwas, Mime Gopi, Kabir Singh, Ravi Varma played other important roles in the movie. Hunt movie is directed by Mahesh Surapaneni and produced by V Ananda Prasad on Bhavya Creation production banner. Music of this movie is composed by Ghibran and cinematography is handled by Arul Vincent. Prawin Pudi took care of the editing.

Hunt movie looks like an unofficial remake of the Malayalam super hit movie ‘Mumbai Police’ that received many accolades for its making and story telling. Though the trailer of this movie was very well designed, as soon as the movie starts in the theatre, you will understand that most of the scenes are seen elsewhere, if you have already watched ‘Mumbai Police’ in Malayalam.

Though movie looks like an unofficial remake of Mumbai Police movie, director tried to inject few elements that could connect with Telugu audience. Final twist in the movie might be unpredictable to many and might not be appealing to few section of audience as well.

While it comes to acting performances, Sudheer Babu is very good in the role of a cop struggling to recall what happened to him. His efforts in the action scenes are appreciable. Srikanth Meka played very important role in the movies that travels with the lead character most of the time and he did good. Bharat Niwas was okay in the role of Aaryan Dev, he could have been better in few scenes. All other actors did their part as required for the characters.

Technically Hunt movie looks okay. Songs have no importance in the movie, however background score composed by Ghibran creates the required interest in the scenes. Cinematography by Arul Vincent is good for few scenes and could have been much better for few more scenes. Action sequences are well choreographed. Production values are okay.

Director Mahesh Surapaneni tried to present the story that has already been said in other language with some changes made to entertain present day audience. He needs to improve a little more in terms of making the movie.

Overall, Hunt is an action filled entertainer with few unexpected twits and turns that can be watched in theatres.

The mood of the film is largely morose (could've done with more liveliness), the treatment is understated and the mysteries are more internal than external.
