How to write a Resume Summary

Whether you're an experienced Photo Editor or a novice ready for your first foray into the vibrant world of image editing, constructing a razor-sharp resume summary or objective is a fundamental part of the job hunt journey.

Think of the summary or objective section as a snippet, or a brief, concise peek into your abilities, experience, and aspirations. Perfecting this peek, though, requires balancing multiple elements correctly, ensuring each word adds value and constructs a positive picture of your capabilities, without falling back on the ordinary or cliche.

Expertise, Skills, and Experience

The very first step to engaging your potential employer's interest is effectively summarizing your professional accomplishments, skills acquired, and unique qualifications. It is a reflection of your adeptness in the field. Highlighting your expertise in distinct software tools preferred by the industry like Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, or others can indicate your readiness for the job.

Goals, Aspirations, and Intent

Often, recruiters look for individuals with a forward-facing mindset, an eager attitude, and an understanding of their future goals. And this is exactly what your summary or objective can emphasize. Spark their curiosity with the value you can add to their company using your past experiences and established skilfulness. An approach like this hits the right chords without sounding too salesy or humdrum.

Customization is Key

There can never be a one-size-fits-all solution in the realm of resumes, breathtakingly different—a kaleidoscope of various skills, experiences, and aspirations. Consequently, personalizing and tailoring your summary/objective to match the specific requirements of the position you're applying for can demonstrate your seriousness towards the role and increase your chances of getting noticed.

Brevity and Simplicity

Lastly, the manner of articulation in your summary or objective section can highly affect its impressionability. Ensure it's quick to read and easy to understand. Employ clear, succinct language that communicates your significant information effectively and eliminate unnecessary jargon. Friendly and approachable language can set a positive tone, while simultaneously flaunting your communication skills.

Remember, the persuasive summary or objective section is art that requires refinement—if accomplished accurately, it will highlight your descriptor as an experienced and aspirational Photo Editor, where every phrase adds value and consists of unique information about you.

Strong Summaries

Why these are strong ?

These examples are good as they highlight a clear value proposition for an employer. They focus on experience, area of expertise, technical skills, and soft skills. Most importantly, they have a specific job target in mind. Moreover, they go beyond just listing skills by demonstrating the impact the candidate could potentially bring to the employer. Overall, these target-orientated and results-driven summaries would be an excellent practice.

Weak Summaries

  • Performed operations on photos. Used editing software. Made changes as needed
  • Photo editor with time spent doing photo edits.
  • I really like editing photos and have been doing it for a while now.
  • I feel I am good at photo editing.
  • Photo Editor with no specific industry experience
  • Job was to edit photos. I did a good job
  • Edited many photos, awarded for my services multiple times

Why these are weak ?

The above examples are bad practices for several reasons. They are all vague and lack depth and specificity. A good resume summary should elaborate on specific skills, experiences, and achievements. Most of these examples merely state 'photo editing' without getting into detail about which exact software or tools they are proficient in, what type of editing (retouching, color correction etc) they specialize in, or what kind of projects they have worked on. Furthermore, there is a lack of any quantitative achievement. Employers want to see measurable results. Finally, some summaries are written in a casual, unprofessional tone. A resume is a formal document, and should be kept professional.

Showcase your Work Experience

The focus of our discussion today is creating an impressive work experience section for a resume, specifically for those in the role of a Photo Editor. The work experience section lays the groundwork for your capabilities and accomplishments, serving as a testament to your acumen and proficiency in a professional setting.

Understand the Importance

The basis of your work experience section starts with understanding its impact. For the hiring personnel, it’s like a window into your professional past. It provides a glimpse into how you have grown, adapted and thrived in previous employment settings. When written well, it demonstrates not just your skillset, but your personality—how you handle assignments, how you interact in a team, and most importantly, how you add business value.

Be Specific about Your Tasks

Having a clear understanding of each previous role is the next step. Don't merely list employed positions. Dive deep into specifics. What were you responsible for achieving? Were there special projects or assignments that you worked on? Jot down the different roles you have undertaken and the skills you harnessed.

Quantify your achievements and impact in each role using specific metrics, percentages, or dollar amounts to provide concrete evidence of your value and make your work experience section more compelling to potential employers.

Highlight Achievements Effectively

Focusing on your accomplishments instead of just duties can also make a difference. Did you reduce turnaround times significantly? Or maybe you innovated a unique approach that garnered more appealing outputs? Try using statistics and numbers in this section to illustrate the impact of your work, which in turn, can lend credibility to your statements.

Tailor According to the Application

Lastly, don't forget to tailor your work experience section according to each application. One-size-fits-all doesn't cut it when you are applying to various companies with distinguished cultures and expectations. Consider closely examining the job advertisement. Understand what the recruiter is looking for, and highlight those aspects of your experience that align with their requirements.

In essence, your work experience section is more than just a chronology of your career. It's a portrayal of your journey, a testament to what you've learned and accomplished along the way and a promise of what you bring to potential employers. This meticulous, careful construction will augment your probability of grabbing the recruiter's attention and proving yourself as a viable candidate.

Strong Experiences

  • Lead Photo Editor for a high-profile fashion magazine, overseeing all aspects of photo editing and management.
  • Implemented a new digital workflow system, resulting in a 30% increase in productivity.
  • Administered training sessions on image editing software techniques to junior editors and interns, improving overall team skill level.
  • Organised and maintained a database of over 10,000 high-resolution images.
  • Procured necessary resources for photoshoots including models, props, and shooting locations.
  • Demonstrated a strong understanding of image composition, color quality, and aesthetic appeal in all edited photos.

The above examples illustrate good practices for bullet points in a work experience section for a Photo Editor resume. They highlight the candidates' skills and their accomplishments in previous jobs. Each bullet begins with a powerful, industry-related verb and quantifiably shows the candidate's impact in their roles. They offer details about the applicants' industry experience, like organizing large image databases and running complex photoshoots that are very relevant to the position they are applying for.

Weak Experiences

  • Used Adobe Photoshop.
  • edited photos.
  • Did some image correction.
  • Worked fast.
  • Know Lightroom.

These examples are bad due to their vagueness and lack of specificity. A potential employer cannot gauge the level of expertise or the quality of work based off these statements. 'Used Adobe Photoshop' and 'Know Lightroom', are poor examples because they don't give an indication of how proficient the candidate is with these tools. 'Edited photos' and 'Did some image correction' are also insufficient because they don't provide any details about what kind of editing or correction was done, what types of photos were worked on, or how often these tasks were conducted. 'Worked fast' is an irresponsible statement because speed does not necessarily equate to efficiency or quality, which are factors employers care about much more. All in all, these examples lack depth, unique specifics, and do not present a compelling picture of the candidate's capabilities.

Skills, Keywords & ATS Tips

When creating a Photo Editor resume, focusing on both hard and soft skills is essential to stand out. Understanding the significance of these skills and their connection with appropriate keywords and Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) can pave your way to success. Let's explore this further.

Hard Skills & Their Importance in a Photo Editor Resume

Hard skills, in your case, may include technical abilities related to photography and editing. Photo editing software skills, understanding of photography techniques, color correction, retouching, and digital printing are some examples.

These skills showcase the hands-on experience and professional capabilities you have in this field. They prove that you can perform technical tasks and handle the practical aspects of the job. Mentioning these hard skills in your resume significantly enhances your chances to grab the attention of employers.

Soft Skills & Their Importance in a Photo Editor Resume

On the other hand, soft skills are about how efficiently you work. These are your interpersonal or "people" skills. They highlight your work ethic, your attitude, and other personality traits. For a photo editor, patience, attention to detail, creativity, or the ability to work under pressure are prime examples.

Even though they are not directly linked with photography or editing, they are just as crucial for your resume. These skills tell an employer that you can seamlessly fit into their working environment while maintaining good relations with co-workers.

Keywords, ATS and Matching Skills

Most organizations use automated systems like ATS to filter resumes before a hiring manager even sees them. An ATS works by scanning your resume for specific keywords related to the job. If your resume lacks those keywords, it might get discarded, regardless of your skills or experience.

That's why it's pivotal to include specific hard and soft skills in your resume explicitly mentioned in the job listing. Make sure to use the same phrases and terms used in the job description so the ATS can recognize and match them.

Moreover, careful use of industry-related keywords can also make your resume more appealing to human recruiters. These keywords might include specific terminology, software, tools, or techniques prevalent in photo editing or photography.

Remember, balance is key. Reflect an equal grasp of hard and soft skills in your resume. Also, careful keyword inclusion can fast-track your way through an ATS and make a persuasive impression on hiring managers.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Writing a Photo Editor Resume

In this competitive job market, employers receive an average of 180 applications for each open position. To process these resumes, companies often rely on automated applicant tracking systems, which can sift through resumes and eliminate the least qualified applicants. If your resume is among the few that make it past these bots, it must still impress the recruiter or hiring manager. With so many applications coming in, recruiters typically give each resume only 5 seconds of their attention before deciding whether to discard it. Considering this, it's best to avoid including any distracting information on your application that could cause it to be thrown away. To help make sure your resume stands out, review the list below of what you should not include on your job application.

  • Not including a cover letter. A cover letter is a great way to explain why you are the best candidate for the job and why you want the position.
  • Using too much jargon. Hiring managers do not want to read a resume full of technical terms that they do not understand.
  • Omitting important details. Make sure to include your contact information, educational background, job history, and any relevant skills and experiences.
  • Using a generic template. Take the time to customize your resume to the job you are applying for. This will show the employer that you are serious about the position.
  • Spelling and grammar errors. Always double-check your resume for typos, spelling mistakes, and grammar errors.
  • Focusing too much on duties. Make sure to include accomplishments and successes to show the employer that you are a great candidate.
  • Including personal information. Avoid including any personal information such as age, marital status, or religious beliefs.

3. Next, create a photo editor skills section on your resume

Your resume's skills section should include the most important keywords from the job description, as long as you actually have those skills. If you haven't started your job search yet, you can look over resumes to get an idea of what skills are the most important.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing your resume's skills section:

  • Include 6-12 skills, in bullet point form
  • List mostly hard skills ; soft skills are hard to test
  • Emphasize the skills that are most important for the job

Hard skills are generally more important to hiring managers because they relate to on-the-job knowledge and specific experience with a certain technology or process.

Soft skills are also valuable, as they're highly transferable and make you a great person to work alongside, but they're impossible to prove on a resume.

Example of skills to include on an photo editor resume

A photoshoot is a series of photographs that a photographer takes of someone, usually of a model or a famous person, to be used in a newspaper or a magazine. The goal of a photoshoot is to achieve a predetermined visual objective. Later, these images can be used for editing or post-production..

Art direction is an essential job in the activities related to theatre, advertising, fashion, publishing as well the film industry. All of these fields have a direct or indirect connection with art and therefore require direction and supervision regarding this very aspect of the job. The art director is responsible for how a product turns out visually..

Color correction is a technical process that solves color problems and makes the footage look as natural as possible. Color correction helps adjust black and white levels, exposure, contrast, and white balance. The idea is essential to correct the underlying problems in the image by balancing the colors, making the white appear as white and the black as black, and making sure that everything is real as the human eye would see it in the real world.

News Story is a term that is quite self-explanatory as it refers to all the information that is recorded either in writing or as an interview and aims to inform the public about any particular matter, event, idea or mishap. A news story can be very short as well lengthy depending on the type and quantity of content and consist of relevant facts and figures.

A media access control or simply MAC is a network policy that identifies or determines how the data is being transferred in two particular servers through a network cable. The purpose of a MAC protocol is to prevent network or technical issues and simplify transferring the information or data.

Graphic design is the art of making visual content to communicate messages. Designers apply different page layout methods and visual hierarchy by using letters and pictures to meet the need of end-users. Most companies use graphic design to sell their product or services and to convey complicated information by using infographics.

  • Photo Shoots , 6.3%
  • Instagram , 5.5%
  • Other Skills , 58.7%

4. List your photo editor experience

The most important part of any resume for a photo editor is the experience section. Recruiters and hiring managers expect to see your experience listed in reverse chronological order, meaning that you should begin with your most recent experience and then work backwards.

Don't just list your job duties below each job entry. Instead, make sure most of your bullet points discuss impressive achievements from your past positions. Whenever you can, use numbers to contextualize your accomplishments for the hiring manager reading your resume.

It's okay if you can't include exact percentages or dollar figures. There's a big difference even between saying "Managed a team of photo editors" and "Managed a team of 6 photo editors over a 9-month project. "

Most importantly, make sure that the experience you include is relevant to the job you're applying for. Use the job description to ensure that each bullet point on your resume is appropriate and helpful.

Specific photo editor certifications can be a powerful tool to show employers you've developed the appropriate skills.

If you have any of these certifications, make sure to put them on your photo editor resume:

  • Adobe Photoshop CC 2015

6. Finally, add an photo editor resume summary or objective statement

A resume summary statement consists of 1-3 sentences at the top of your photo editor resume that quickly summarizes who you are and what you have to offer. Editor Resume Example for 2024 (W/ Free Templates & Guide)

Background Image

You have an eye for detail that doesn’t let anything pass you by.

Whether it’s a typo or a messy sentence, you notice everything when you read a text.

And now you’ve made it from an avid reader to a professional editor!

But there’s one thing you just can’t seem to edit to perfection – your resume.

You’re stuck staring at the page and wondering how to best describe your professional experience and editor know-how.

But, there’s no need to worry!

In this article, we’re going to help you rewrite your resume to reflect all your strengths.

We’re going to cover:

  • What Makes a Great Editor Resume Example
  • 10 Steps to Writing the Best Editor Resume Example
  • What to Include in Your Editor Resume

…and then some!

Let’s get started.

Editor Resume Example

editor resume example

The editor resume above is a great example of what you want your resume to look like.

These are the elements that make it a great editor resume:

  • Reverse-chronological resume format. In addition to highlighting your most recent work experience first, the reverse-chronological resume format is hiring managers’ favorite worldwide. Due to this, it’s the best choice for an editor's resume.
  • Professional contact details. The editor resume above includes contact information, such as the candidate’s name and surname, email address, phone number, location, portfolio link, and links to any relevant social media such as LinkedIn.
  • Eye-catching resume summary. A brief but impressive resume summary is at the top of this editor resume, which highlights the candidate’s skills and top achievements.
  • Quantifiable achievements. To emphasize the impact of the listed work accomplishments, the editor resume backs up every claim with concrete data.
  • Concise education section. Your skills and experience as an editor are a lot more important than your degree, so the editor resume example keeps the education section short and to the point.
  • Organized in bullet points. Making sure you’re resume is easy to read is as important as the information it contains. To keep things organized, the editor resume example uses bullet points instead of paragraphs when describing work experience.
  • Relevant skills sections. The editor resume focuses on in-demand editor skills and lists the candidate’s hard skills separate from their soft skills to make their resume easier to navigate.
  • Additional sections. To highlight any extra strengths and proficiencies, the candidate uses optional resume sections such as memberships, languages, and hobbies.

10 Steps for the Perfect Editor Resume

You know what it takes to make a job-winning editor resume, so now it’s your turn to write one.

Follow these steps to make your editor resume:

#1. Pick the Right Format

If your resume is the manuscript of your career journey, then your chosen resume format is the structure that holds it together.

You can choose from one of three resume formats :

  • Reverse-chronological (also called chronological)
  • Functional (also called skill-based)
  • Combination (a blend of the reverse-chronological and functional formats)

In 99% of cases, we recommend that you stick to the reverse-chronological resume format when creating your editor resume.

The reverse-chronological resume format highlights your most recent work experience and achievements, which makes it the best format to show off your strengths.

And it doesn’t hurt that it’s the favorite resume format amongst hiring managers either. The reverse-chronological format is by far the most popular worldwide, so it’s the best choice.

#2. Tweak the Layout

Now that you know how to format your editor resume, let’s look at some basic layout tips !

The hiring manager is going to see your resume before they even try to read it, so you want to make sure your resume gives a good first impression.

Here are some guidelines you should follow:

  • Adjust the line spacing. Apply the standard line spacing to your editor resume, which is 1.0 between text and 1.15 after subheadings and between double lines.
  • Pick a professional font. Your resume’s font determines its readability, so you should choose one carefully. Avoid overused fonts like Times New Roman and quirky fonts like Comic Sans – there are plenty of better fonts out there. (E.g. Roboto, Ubuntu, etc.)
  • Keep it a single page. Your resume should be short and eye-catching, so stick to a single-page layout. Unless you’re applying for a job that requires decades of experience , the hiring manager won’t be eager to read a two-page resume.
  • Choose the right file format. Always save and send your editor resume as a PDF file to ensure the layout stays the same across any device or Operating System the hiring manager might use to open it. The only exception is when the employer specifically requests a different file format, like a Word document .

Or Use a Resume Template to Save Time

Let’s be honest – you’d rather be editing an up-and-coming novel than a page of your career history.

It takes time and energy to adjust the margins, keep the font sizes consistent, and tweak the line spacing - all the while making sure your resume never spills over to page two.

So why not just skip all the hassle?

Just try one of our free resume templates and create your editor resume in minutes.

Each template is created in close collaboration with leading HR professionals to make sure your resume is ATS-friendly, easy to read, professional, and pleasing to the eye.

Choose a stylish resume template that highlights your individuality and you’ll be good to go in no time.

Here is how our templates compare to a standard text editor resume template:

#3. List Your Contact Information (Correctly)

Your resume’s contact information section should stick to the facts.

Include the following details:

  • Full Name. (E.g. Rupert Woodson )
  • Professional Title . The title in your resume’s header should match the position you’re applying for, word for word. (E.g. Associate Editor)
  • Phone Number. Add your country’s dial code in front of your phone number if you’re applying for a job abroad, otherwise, the call might never come through.
  • Email Address. Keep your email address professional and avoid obscure references or nicknames. Some variation of your first and last name is more than enough. (E.g. [email protected] is not appropriate, but [email protected] is.)
  • Portfolio Link. Including a link to your online editor portfolio is a must when applying for any job in the field. You can optionally also add links to any relevant social media websites, such as LinkedIn or Medium.
  • Location. Add the name of your city, state, or country – there’s no need to add a full mailing address unless specified by the employer. If you’re looking for a job that will let you relocate or a remote position, be sure to specify this somewhere in your resume.

Leverage your attention to detail to ensure this section is correct .

Letting a typo in your email address or phone number slip past you will likely make a bad impression on the hiring manager and sabotage your chances of hearing back from them.

Let’s take a look at a spot-on example of a contact information section:

Rupert Woodson, Line Editor +44 7700 900305 [email protected] www.woodson-manuscript-editing.co.uk Lincoln, England

Perry Woodson, Editor 07700 900305 [email protected] East Midlands, UK

#4. Write a Resume Summary or Objective

Hiring managers go through hundreds of resumes daily, which means you only have seven seconds to convince them that yours is worth reading.

This is where a resume summary or objective does all the heavy lifting. Adding one of these short, two to four-sentence paragraphs in your resume’s header shows the hiring manager who you are as a candidate and what you can bring to the company.

Here is how the two differ:

  • Resume summary. For an experienced editor, a resume summary is the best way to give an eye-catching introduction to your career. It should include your years of experience, top skills, and notable achievements.
  • Resume objective. If you’re just starting as an editor, consider using a resume objective instead. This is meant to give an overview of your skills and relevant experience and present your professional goals or career aspirations.

Let’s check out an example of a well-done editor resume summary:

  • Detail-oriented line editor with 5+ years of experience, looking to join the team at Publishing House X. Notably improved manuscript acceptance rates by 40% within a year at Publishing House Y. Proficient in industry-standard tools like Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat. Committed to ensuring clarity, coherence, and high-quality output while working as part of a team dedicated to excellence in the written word.
  • Aspiring editor and English Literature graduate, eager to begin a career with Publishing House X. Strong foundation in grammar and literary style and proficiency in industry-standard editing tools, including Microsoft Word. Passionate about ensuring that written works are polished to perfection. Excited to contribute to the team and grow professionally within the editorial world.

#5. Focus on Your Work Experience

Your work experience as an editor is what most hiring managers will be looking for, so it's needless to say that it’s important to pay attention to this section.

Here’s what your work experience section should include:

  • List everything in reverse chronological order. Your latest work experience should be at the top of this section, so the hiring manager can trace your career.
  • Use your actual job title. Your resume should remain professional and only include the correct job titles for your previous roles. Buzzwords are rapidly losing popularity and have no place on your editor resume.
  • Include the employer’s details. Add the name and location of the company. You can mention what the company specializes in as well, especially if it isn’t a household name.
  • Specify the employment period. Use the mm/yyyy format throughout your resume.
  • Describe responsibilities and achievements. When describing your previous work experience, use bullet points instead of paragraphs. Five to six bullet points are sufficient for your most recent role, and no more than three or four are necessary for older positions.

And that’s all there is to formatting your work experience as an editor.

But if you want your resume to impress, not just inform, there are a few extra steps.

Follow these tips to make your work experience section really pop:

  • Tailor your work experience. If you have a lot of work experience, you should only add your most recent positions, as well as those most relevant to the job you’re applying for (e.g. skip your pizza-delivery gig from 7 years ago).
  • Emphasize achievements. Your day-to-day tasks in your previous job don’t convey your value as an employee. But the more achievements a hiring manager sees you have, the clearer it is to them you can be an asset to the company.
  • Back up everything with data. Give credibility to your achievements by adding numbers wherever possible. (e.g. ‘Simultaneously managed several projects mounting up to over 40k words per month while upholding a 95% approval rate for quality standards’ sounds a lot better than ‘Managed multiple manuscripts at the same time’ ).
  • Use powerful verbs. Show off your way with words by avoiding the cliches like “responsible for this” and “managed that”. Make your experiences stand out with more powerful words like pursued, organized, perfected, conceptualized, or spearheaded.

Here’s an example of a spot-on editor work experience section:

Developmental Editor

Sunrise Publishing House

Beijing, China

06/2020 - 08/2023

  • Collaborated closely with authors to shape the overall structure and direction of novels, ensuring compelling story arcs and consistent themes.
  • Balanced a portfolio of 20+ projects annually, consistently delivering comprehensive feedback within deadlines.
  • Actively contributed to weekly editorial meetings and developed strategies to navigate market trends and determine standout manuscripts for successful future publication.
  • Led 12 workshops annually, reaching over 150 writers, with over 80% reporting an improved understanding of novel structure and character development.
  • Coordinated with the translation department to ensure that the essence of developmental edits was maintained in the foreign translations of manuscripts.

What if I Don’t Have Work Experience?

If you’re just getting started as an editor, you might be worried that you don’t have any relevant work experience under your belt.

The thing is, when you’re applying for an entry-level position, hiring managers won’t expect you to have any experience either.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t still create an impressive resume with no work experience .

All you need to do is fill up that portion of your resume with other sections that show your skills and passion for the field.

Instead of work experience, you can mention any editing experience you have, such as:

  • Internships
  • Volunteering
  • Academic projects
  • Personal projects
  • Extracurricular activities

For example, if you had an academic project that required a lot of editing work and an eye for detail, you can highlight that on your resume.

Here’s how:

Lead Editor

Comparative Analysis of Contemporary East Asian Literature

University of Maryland, USA

09/2021 - 06/2022

  • Led a team of 4 peers to analyze and compare the narrative styles of contemporary Chinese, Japanese, and Korean novels.
  • Edited and refined the entire research paper, ensuring coherence, consistent terminology, and adherence to the MLA citation style.
  • Collaborated with native speakers to guarantee the accurate representation and interpretation of the translated texts.
  • Organized a seminar attended by over 50 students and faculty members across the English and East Asian Language departments, where the project’s findings were presented and discussed.
  • Received commendation from the Chair of the English department for the project’s thoroughness and the high-quality editing of the final research paper.

#6. Create Your Portfolio

As an editor, your portfolio of edited works is just as important as a writer’s would be.

The easiest way to do that is by adding a clickable link on your resume that leads to your portfolio website. Your portfolio itself can be hosted on a website like Clippings.me or a personal website you created yourself.

But if you have a variety of editing experience that is relevant to the role you’re applying for, you can also create a portfolio section on your resume. This way you can elaborate more on your best work and highlight the skills that make you the right candidate for the job.

Here’s an example:

Portfolio – www.claricesterling.edit

  • Featured articles - Edited and polished over 40 in-depth articles for various lifestyle and travel magazines, with several pieces garnering “Editor’s Choice” distinctions.
  • Interviews - Refined transcriptions for 30+ exclusive interviews with renowned personalities, one of which was for a journalism award for its insightful content.
  • Photography captions and layout - Collaborated on the visual storytelling for StRAWberry Magazine’s special edition, which several reviewers applauded for its compelling narrative flow and seamless integration of text and imagery.

Keep in mind that editors are employed across many different fields, so your portfolio should always be tailored to the specific job you’re applying for.

Don’t provide samples of copy editing you’ve done for a publishing house if you want to be an SEO line editor for a digital marketing agency – there is a difference.

#7. Keep the Education Section Brief

According to Zippia, over 98% of employed editors in the USA have a university degree . So education clearly plays a part when it comes to finding a job as an editor.

However, the most important thing that hiring managers look at on your editor resume is your work experience, portfolio, and skills sections.

Keep your education section brief and focus more on your hands-on experience as an editor.

Here’s what you should include when describing your education:

  • Degree Name. E.g. BA English Philology and Culture, Minor in Journalism
  • University Name. E.g. Jagiellonian University
  • Location (optional). E.g. Krakow, Poland
  • Years Attended. E.g. 2018 - 2022

Here’s what this looks like in practice:

BA in English Language and Literature

Charles University Prague, Czech Republic

09/2019 - 07/2023

There’s no need to mention your high school education unless that’s the highest level of education you have.

#8. List In-Demand Editor Soft and Hard Skills

Your skills section is another crucial part of your editor resume.

The skills you list on your resume tell a hiring manager several things, including what you can do for them or how much time they might need to train you.

This section needs to make you look perfect for the job, not all-knowing. Don’t list every single editing skill you can think of, just focus on the ones specific to the position.

For example, if you’re trying to get a job as an academic editor, there’s no point in listing your SEO writing skills or marketing insight.

Here are some tips to take your skills section to the next level:

  • Tailor your skills to the job ad. Carefully read through the job description and keep an eye out for any required skills it mentions. Add the skills that apply to you to your editor resume, including software you’ve used and specific writing skills.
  • Research editing trends. Language evolves, vocabularies expand, and specific editing skills come in and out of fashion. Get the ball rolling in this section by checking out our list of 101+ essential skills and add the ones that apply to you on your resume.
  • Separate your soft and hard skills. Your resume will be neater and easier to navigate when you keep your soft skills separated from your hard skills, which means the hiring manager will have an easier time finding what they’re looking for.

You know how to list skills on your editor resume.

All that’s left is to find out what skills you should list.

#9. Take Advantage of Optional Resume Sections

You might have some space left over on your editor resume. If that’s the case, now is the time to leverage optional resume sections.

Some optional resume sections can back up your professional experience and show the employer how dedicated to the field you are. Others can flesh you out as a candidate, show the hiring manager your personality, and make you stand out from other applicants with similar work experience and skills.

These are some of the optional sections you can add to your editor resume:

  • Awards. Just as there are awards for authors, there are awards for editors out there. If you’ve won any prizes or been nominated for an award, showing off a little won’t hurt.
  • Memberships. If you’re an active member of any societies, associations, or other organizations related to editing, you can add them to your resume.
  • Certifications. As an editor, you’re constantly learning and improving, so any extra courses or certifications you’ve sought out to hone your skills are a welcome addition to your resume.
  • Languages. Proficiency in different languages is always a plus, particularly if you’re looking for a role that includes translation or editing translated texts. Any languages you know could make you a preferred candidate for the job you’re applying for.
  • Hobbies and interests. You might be surprised to hear this but your hobbies and interests can increase your resume’s chances of success . Just try to keep your listed hobbies and interests relevant to the job. (E.g. Reading and science fiction are better for an editor resume than archery and track racing).

Let’s take a look at an example of optional sections on an editor resume:

  • 2022 East Asian Literary Excellence Award
  • 2020 Chinese Translation Achievement Medal
  • English (Native)
  • Mandarin (Bilingual)
  • Mongolian (Beginner)

Hobbies & interests

  • Calligraphy

#10. Include a Cover Letter

You don’t need to be told how important the written word is when making an impression, but you might be surprised to hear that cover letters are still crucial for a successful job application .

In fact, hiring managers will expect a cover letter with your application, and not attaching one could hurt your chances of getting an interview.

By writing a cover letter , you’re showing the hiring manager you care about THIS specific job, in THIS specific company. You aren’t just sending the same generic resume without doing your research.

So let’s take a look at some cover letter tips you can use to write a stellar editor cover letter:

cover letter structure

  • Add contact details in the header. Your cover letter should include your name, contact details, and the title of the position you’re applying for. Make sure everything here matches the information on your resume.
  • Address the hiring manager. To set yourself apart from other candidates, research and find out how to address your cover letter . If possible, find out the hiring manager’s name, and include their contact information when addressing your cover letter.
  • Write an attention-grabbing opening paragraph. Start your cover letter by explaining why you’re writing, and introduce a couple of your top achievements or qualifications.
  • Dive into the details. You can expand on your professional background in the body of your cover letter. Include anything from your resume you wanted to elaborate on or relevant information you didn’t have the chance to mention there. This part of your cover letter should convey how your experience and skills make you the best fit for the job.
  • Wrap it up with a call to action. Close your cover letter by inviting the hiring manager to take some sort of action. (e.g. ‘I’m looking forward to discussing how I can best contribute to your future publications at your convenience’ ) and add a sign with a professional closing line, followed by your name. (e.g. Respectfully yours, )

Easy, right?

Now let’s see an example of a cover letter made to match our editor resume example:

Key Takeaways

And that concludes our guide to creating an editor resume!

Hopefully, now you feel ready to get out there and land your dream job.

But before we send you on your way, let’s recap what we talked about:

  • Your editor resume’s format and layout are just as important as its contents. Use a professional resume template and a reverse-chronological format to keep your resume neat and organized, and let the hiring manager navigate it easily.
  • Having a short paragraph in your resume’s header, like a resume summary, is a must. Make sure it includes your top skills, achievements, and years of experience.
  • Prepare a portfolio with samples of your best editing work and make sure to provide a link to it on your resume.
  • Keep the skills section relevant to the position. You can reference the job description for what skills are required and just add the ones that apply to you on your editor resume.
  • Finally, wrap up your application with a matching cover letter tailored to the role you’re applying for.

I Edited My Photos With These AI-Powered Apps: Here Were the Results

Photo editing has become effortless thanks to AI features. I gave some of them a shot—here's what happened.

Quick Links

  • AI Editing With Google Photos
  • Enhance Your Images Using Pixlr AI
  • Quick AI Edits With Luminar Neo
  • Using 1-Tap Enhance in Fotor
  • Background Removal With CutOut Pro

Key Takeaways

  • Enhance your photos easily with AI editing tools like Google Photos, Pixlr, Luminar Neo, and Fotor.
  • Google Photos, Fotor, and Luminar Neo all have AI enhancement features that will give you subtle changes for better results.
  • Experiment with different AI editing tools to adjust brightness, reduce noise, and remove backgrounds for improved images.

You can make your pictures look great with minimal effort using AI photo editing. Today, you'll discover a range of AI editing tools I used to adjust my images, including auto-enhance, noise removal, and several other features. Let's jump right in.

1 AI Editing With Google Photos

I tried two specific features in Google Photos: Auto-Enhance and tweaking the sky. Keep in mind that Google Photos' AI editing tools require a Google One subscription.

Auto-Enhance

The Auto-Enhance tool in Google Photos is similar to enhancement features you'll find in most image-editing apps, including Adobe Lightroom and Canva. Here's the original image that I used Auto-Enhance for in Google Photos:

Now, here's what the image looked like after using Auto-Enhance:

The changes were subtle. Google Photos added some brightness to the image, and it also looks a bit punchier. Overall, I was happy with these edits.

The changes were also subtle on other pictures I tried Auto-Enhance with, but your mileage may vary as it depends on how much editing is needed for your original image.

Editing the Sky

Google Photos also uses AI to edit the sky in your images. You can choose from seven presets:

I used the same picture to try out sky editing. As I took the image on a sunny day, I was curious to see how it'd look with the Stormy filter...

I actually quite liked how Google Photos desaturated and darkened parts of my image. Before trying the tool, I naively thought it was going to replace the sky with a stormy one; instead, they work more like filters.

You still have to think about the colors in your pictures, though. I tried Afterglow next, and the results weren't so great. However, I believe this filter would work well if you want to improve your nighttime sky photography .

2 Enhance Your Images Using Pixlr AI

Pixlr is one of the best free Photoshop alternatives , and it has several AI tools you can use to enhance your photos. I tried three: Super Sharp, Noise Removal, and Generative Fill. Here's how each of them worked.

Super Sharp

Below is the original image I edited with Pixlr Super Sharp, and I also used it for the other AI tools we'll discuss in a moment.

I noticed that Pixlr significantly compressed my image after uploading it, so that's something to keep in mind. Here's the result:

If you only have a free Pixlr membership, you get 12 coins for its AI features.

Noise Removal

You can remove noise from your pictures with Photoshop and several other tools. If you don't know how to manually do this, consider starting with Pixlr's Noise Removal feature.

When I zoomed into my picture, I saw that much of the noise that was previously there was now gone. Still, I personally prefer Photoshop's tools for both smartphone and DSLR/mirrorless camera images—even if you have to pay for the software.

Generative Fill

You can add generative fill to your pictures in Photoshop , but how does the tool work in Pixlr? To find out, I wanted to create an overcast sky effect in my images and gave Pixlr the following prompt:

Please replace the selected area with an overcast sky. I don't want a huge storm; just gray clouds.

That didn't quite work as planned...

I then sought to ask a clearer prompt:

Please replace the sky in my picture with an overcast day

Again, this did not work as I wanted.

Adobe Express has a much better generative fill tool, so I'd recommend using that. I also gave the other Firefly AI features in Adobe Express a spin if you're interested in using the app.

3 Quick AI Edits With Luminar Neo

Luminar Neo is one of the most popular AI photo editing apps , and I tried editing some of my images with numerous of its tools. Unlike the other apps we've discussed so far, you have to download an app for Luminar Neo. After doing that, I tried out AI Enhance, GenExpand, and Relight.

First, I tried the AI Enhance feature in Luminar Neo. Here's the original image:

Luminar Neo lets you choose how strong you want the enhancements to be. You can also determine how much you want to change the sky. I opted for subtle changes to both:

Having the slider was quite nice, as I've often found it annoying that editing apps give you a default change. This time, I felt like I had more control.

Luminar Neo also has a Relight feature that lets you add brightness to different parts of your image. You get three sliders:

  • Brightness Near
  • Brightness Far

Depth is especially useful for choosing how much of your image you wish to brighten. I made a few slight changes to this picture, focusing mainly on Brightness Far. Here is my result:

The Relight feature worked similarly to the exposure and brightness sliders that you see in Lightroom and Photoshop. I'm not sure that I would use it as a replacement for those unless I made the switch to Luminar Neo. Nonetheless, it's a helpful feature.

4 Using 1-Tap Enhance in Fotor

1-Tap Enhance is one of Fotor's free AI editing features, and I was curious to see how it would fare in comparison to Google Photos' Auto-Enhance. This time, I used this picture:

As you can see below, Fotor's 1-Tap Enhance was pretty similar to Google Photos. Most of the changes to my image involved brightening. You do have to deal with a Fotor watermark, but you can always crop this out—I'd therefore recommend uploading and editing a picture that you later want to crop anyway.

5 Background Removal With CutOut Pro

If you're looking for a fast way to remove the background from a photo , consider using CutOut Pro's background removal tool. All you have to do is upload your image, let CutOut Pro do its thing, and within a few seconds, you'll get a downloadable file.

You can download your picture in JPEG and PNG. I was pretty satisfied with the result, so I would definitely recommend CutOut Pro for background removal purposes.

AI is a great way to make quick edits to your pictures, such as automatically enhancing them or getting rid of the background. Many are free, and even the paid versions often have free trials. Give each of these tools a try and see what you can come up with.

With the couple’s three children George, Charlotte and Louis at school, sources said that a family dinner would be a likely way for William and Kate to mark the occasion. “They don’t usually make a fuss,” says a friend. “There will probably be a nice family dinner and I’m sure William will surprise Catherine with something special.”

The traditional gift for 13 years of marriage is lace. The image Kensington Palace released today showcased Kate’s Alexander McQueen lace dress which was designed by Sarah Burton for the couple’s 2011 wedding at Westminster Abbey.

It is a busy couple of weeks for William and Kate, who recently celebrated their son Louis’s sixth birthday . Next month, Princess Charlotte turns nine.

Adds the friend, “Both William and Catherine are doing everything they can to keep the children happy and the house running as normal while Catherine is having treatment. The children have been very shielded from everything going on at home. They are at school having a lovely happy time.”

Meanwhile, Prince William is set to carry out engagements this week in the North East, while King Charles , who is undergoing treatment for cancer, will resume his public duties in London on Tuesday.

Palace aides have not commented on when Kate will return to work, as she continues to focus on her recovery.

U.K. royals release new photo of Prince Louis, first since editing scandal

sample resume for photo editor

LONDON — A usually anodyne royal tradition, the release of a birthday photo, attracted unusual attention Tuesday, when Kensington Palace shared a grinning close-up of Prince Louis to mark his 6th birthday.

The photo was taken by his mother, Catherine, Princess of Wales, and it was the first image by her that has been released since undisclosed editing prompted photo agencies to retract one royal family portrait and issue caveats about others.

“Happy 6th Birthday, Prince Louis! Thank you for all the kind wishes today,” the Tuesday post read. The image included a camera emoji and was attributed to Catherine.

Palace sources said the photo was taken in the past few days in Windsor, where they live, and had not been edited.

A photo of Catherine and her children released to mark Mother’s Day in Britain was pulled by photo agencies over concerns that it had been altered in violation of their standards.

Catherine later apologized, saying that, “like many amateur photographers,” she had “experiment[ed] with editing.”

Several photo agencies announced that they would review the handout images they had received from the British royal family. Getty Images has since released warnings that other images — including a photo of Queen Elizabeth with her grandchildren — were “digitally enhanced.”

The palace usually releases birthday photos to the media under embargo the day before, which is why there were a number of headlines in the British press early Tuesday remarking on the absence of a photo. Kensington Palace published the image around lunchtime.

Catherine, who has been out of the public eye since Christmas Day, revealed last month that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy. Her news came after her father-in-law, King Charles III, also revealed that he had cancer.

Last week, her husband, Prince William, the heir to the throne, returned to public duties for the first time since Catherine shared her cancer diagnosis.
