An article review is both a summary and an evaluation of another writer's article. Teachers often assign article reviews to introduce students to the work of experts in the field. Experts also are often asked to review the work of other professionals. Understanding the main points and arguments of the article is essential for an accurate summation. Logical evaluation of the article's main theme, supporting arguments, and implications for further research is an important element of a review . Here are a few guidelines for writing an article review.

Education specialist Alexander Peterman recommends: "In the case of a review, your objective should be to reflect on the effectiveness of what has already been written, rather than writing to inform your audience about a subject."

  • Read the article very closely, and then take time to reflect on your evaluation. Consider whether the article effectively achieves what it set out to.
  • Write out a full article review by completing your intro, summary, evaluation, and conclusion. Don't forget to add a title, too!
  • Proofread your review for mistakes (like grammar and usage), while also cutting down on needless information.

Step 1 Understand what an article review is.

  • Article reviews present more than just an opinion. You will engage with the text to create a response to the scholarly writer's ideas. You will respond to and use ideas, theories, and research from your studies. Your critique of the article will be based on proof and your own thoughtful reasoning.
  • An article review only responds to the author's research. It typically does not provide any new research. However, if you are correcting misleading or otherwise incorrect points, some new data may be presented.
  • An article review both summarizes and evaluates the article.

Step 2 Think about the organization of the review article.

  • Summarize the article. Focus on the important points, claims, and information.
  • Discuss the positive aspects of the article. Think about what the author does well, good points she makes, and insightful observations.
  • Identify contradictions, gaps, and inconsistencies in the text. Determine if there is enough data or research included to support the author's claims. Find any unanswered questions left in the article.

Step 3 Preview the article.

  • Make note of words or issues you don't understand and questions you have.
  • Look up terms or concepts you are unfamiliar with, so you can fully understand the article. Read about concepts in-depth to make sure you understand their full context.

Step 4 Read the article closely.

  • Pay careful attention to the meaning of the article. Make sure you fully understand the article. The only way to write a good article review is to understand the article.

Step 5 Put the article into your words.

  • With either method, make an outline of the main points made in the article and the supporting research or arguments. It is strictly a restatement of the main points of the article and does not include your opinions.
  • After putting the article in your own words, decide which parts of the article you want to discuss in your review. You can focus on the theoretical approach, the content, the presentation or interpretation of evidence, or the style. You will always discuss the main issues of the article, but you can sometimes also focus on certain aspects. This comes in handy if you want to focus the review towards the content of a course.
  • Review the summary outline to eliminate unnecessary items. Erase or cross out the less important arguments or supplemental information. Your revised summary can serve as the basis for the summary you provide at the beginning of your review.

Step 6 Write an outline of your evaluation.

  • What does the article set out to do?
  • What is the theoretical framework or assumptions?
  • Are the central concepts clearly defined?
  • How adequate is the evidence?
  • How does the article fit into the literature and field?
  • Does it advance the knowledge of the subject?
  • How clear is the author's writing? Don't: include superficial opinions or your personal reaction. Do: pay attention to your biases, so you can overcome them.

Step 3 Identify the article.

  • For example: The article, "Condom use will increase the spread of AIDS," was written by Anthony Zimmerman, a Catholic priest.

Step 4 Write the introduction....

  • Your introduction should only be 10-25% of your review.
  • End the introduction with your thesis. Your thesis should address the above issues. For example: Although the author has some good points, his article is biased and contains some misinterpretation of data from others’ analysis of the effectiveness of the condom.

Step 5 Summarize the article.

  • Use direct quotes from the author sparingly.
  • Review the summary you have written. Read over your summary many times to ensure that your words are an accurate description of the author's article.

Step 6 Write your critique.

  • Support your critique with evidence from the article or other texts.
  • The summary portion is very important for your critique. You must make the author's argument clear in the summary section for your evaluation to make sense.
  • Remember, this is not where you say if you liked the article or not. You are assessing the significance and relevance of the article.
  • Use a topic sentence and supportive arguments for each opinion. For example, you might address a particular strength in the first sentence of the opinion section, followed by several sentences elaborating on the significance of the point.

Step 7 Conclude the article review.

  • This should only be about 10% of your overall essay.
  • For example: This critical review has evaluated the article "Condom use will increase the spread of AIDS" by Anthony Zimmerman. The arguments in the article show the presence of bias, prejudice, argumentative writing without supporting details, and misinformation. These points weaken the author’s arguments and reduce his credibility.

Step 8 Proofread.

  • Make sure you have identified and discussed the 3-4 key issues in the article.

  • Third-person narrative . Academic reviews should be written from the third-person point of view, avoiding statements like “I think,” “in my opinion,” and so on.

How to Review a Journal Article

For many kinds of assignments, like a  literature review , you may be asked to offer a critique or review of a journal article. This is an opportunity for you as a scholar to offer your  qualified opinion  and  evaluation  of how another scholar has composed their article, argument, and research. That means you will be expected to go beyond a simple  summary  of the article and evaluate it on a deeper level. As a college student, this might sound intimidating. However, as you engage with the research process, you are becoming immersed in a particular topic, and your insights about the way that topic is presented are valuable and can contribute to the overall conversation surrounding your topic.

Some disciplines, like Criminal Justice, may only want you to summarize the article without including your opinion or evaluation. If your assignment is to summarize the article only, please see our literature review handout.

Before getting started on the critique, it is important to review the article thoroughly and critically. To do this, we recommend take notes,  annotating , and reading the article several times before critiquing. As you read, be sure to note important items like the thesis, purpose, research questions, hypotheses, methods, evidence, key findings, major conclusions, tone, and publication information. Depending on your writing context, some of these items may not be applicable.

Questions to Consider

To evaluate a source, consider some of the following questions. They are broken down into different categories, but answering these questions will help you consider what areas to examine. With each category, we recommend identifying the strengths and weaknesses in each since that is a critical part of evaluation.

Evaluating Purpose and Argument

  • How well is the purpose made clear in the introduction through background/context and thesis?
  • How well does the abstract represent and summarize the article’s major points and argument?
  • How well does the objective of the experiment or of the observation fill a need for the field?
  • How well is the argument/purpose articulated and discussed throughout the body of the text?
  • How well does the discussion maintain cohesion?

Evaluating the Presentation/Organization of Information

  • How appropriate and clear is the title of the article?
  • Where could the author have benefited from expanding, condensing, or omitting ideas?
  • How clear are the author’s statements? Challenge ambiguous statements.
  • What underlying assumptions does the author have, and how does this affect the credibility or clarity of their article?
  • How objective is the author in his or her discussion of the topic?
  • How well does the organization fit the article’s purpose and articulate key goals?

Evaluating Methods

  • How appropriate are the study design and methods for the purposes of the study?
  • How detailed are the methods being described? Is the author leaving out important steps or considerations?
  • Have the procedures been presented in enough detail to enable the reader to duplicate them?

Evaluating Data

  • Scan and spot-check calculations. Are the statistical methods appropriate?
  • Do you find any content repeated or duplicated?
  • How many errors of fact and interpretation does the author include? (You can check on this by looking up the references the author cites).
  • What pertinent literature has the author cited, and have they used this literature appropriately?

Following, we have an example of a summary and an evaluation of a research article. Note that in most literature review contexts, the summary and evaluation would be much shorter. This extended example shows the different ways a student can critique and write about an article.

In Chik’s article “Digital Gameplay for Autonomous Foreign Language Learning: Gamers’ and Teachers’ Perspectives”, she explores the ways in which “digital gamers manage gaming and gaming-related activities to assume autonomy in their foreign language learning,” (96) which is presented in contrast to how teachers view the “pedagogical potential” of gaming. The research was described as an “umbrella project” consisting of two parts. The first part examined 34 language teachers’ perspectives who had limited experience with gaming (only five stated they played games regularly) (99). Their data was recorded through a survey, class discussion, and a seven-day gaming trial done by six teachers who recorded their reflections through personal blog posts. The second part explored undergraduate gaming habits of ten Hong Kong students who were regular gamers. Their habits were recorded through language learning histories, videotaped gaming sessions, blog entries of gaming practices, group discussion sessions, stimulated recall sessions on gaming videos, interviews with other gamers, and posts from online discussion forums. The research shows that while students recognize the educational potential of games and have seen benefits of it in their lives, the instructors overall do not see the positive impacts of gaming on foreign language learning.

The summary includes the article’s purpose, methods, results, discussion, and citations when necessary.

This article did a good job representing the undergraduate gamers’ voices through extended quotes and stories. Particularly for the data collection of the undergraduate gamers, there were many opportunities for an in-depth examination of their gaming practices and histories. However, the representation of the teachers in this study was very uneven when compared to the students. Not only were teachers labeled as numbers while the students picked out their own pseudonyms, but also when viewing the data collection, the undergraduate students were more closely examined in comparison to the teachers in the study. While the students have fifteen extended quotes describing their experiences in their research section, the teachers only have two of these instances in their section, which shows just how imbalanced the study is when presenting instructor voices.

Some research methods, like the recorded gaming sessions, were only used with students whereas teachers were only asked to blog about their gaming experiences. This creates a richer narrative for the students while also failing to give instructors the chance to have more nuanced perspectives. This lack of nuance also stems from the emphasis of the non-gamer teachers over the gamer teachers. The non-gamer teachers’ perspectives provide a stark contrast to the undergraduate gamer experiences and fits neatly with the narrative of teachers not valuing gaming as an educational tool. However, the study mentioned five teachers that were regular gamers whose perspectives are left to a short section at the end of the presentation of the teachers’ results. This was an opportunity to give the teacher group a more complex story, and the opportunity was entirely missed.

Additionally, the context of this study was not entirely clear. The instructors were recruited through a master’s level course, but the content of the course and the institution’s background is not discussed. Understanding this context helps us understand the course’s purpose(s) and how those purposes may have influenced the ways in which these teachers interpreted and saw games. It was also unclear how Chik was connected to this masters’ class and to the students. Why these particular teachers and students were recruited was not explicitly defined and also has the potential to skew results in a particular direction.

Overall, I was inclined to agree with the idea that students can benefit from language acquisition through gaming while instructors may not see the instructional value, but I believe the way the research was conducted and portrayed in this article made it very difficult to support Chik’s specific findings.

How to write an article review.

For an article review, your task is to identify, summarize, and evaluate the ideas and information the author has presented. You are being asked to make judgments, positive or negative, about the content of the article. The criteria you follow to do this will vary based upon your particular academic discipline and the parameters of your assignment. 

Your evaluation must go beyond a "gut reaction" to the work and be based on your knowledge of the topic (gained through readings, lectures, and class experience) as well as on what you learn through additional research. Writing a critical article review requires that you to read the selected article in detail as well as other related articles so you can present an objective and educated evaluation.

Why do students write article reviews.

  • Article writing is a deeply analytical process that helps students to correct vague terms when and if they are present. Likewise, when composing an article review or an original assignment, such work provides more clarity regarding using appropriate words. If an article has colloquial language or logical gaps, it is one of those aspects to mention in an article review. It also allows writers to determine whether certain terms must be replaced and edited.

  • Writing an article review allows students to see and understand how others approach specific issues and what perspectives should be studied regarding the problems at hand. Once a person reads the review, it makes it easier to get rid of bias.

Types of article review tasks

  • Original Research Article Review. The original research article review is close to what is often seen as the literature review. An author must explore the author’s hypothesis and some background studies with due analysis to outline scientific methods. It’s one of the most challenging tasks to write as one must interpret the findings and talk about future implications. This type of work can also get lengthy and be up to 6,000 words in subjects like History or Sociology.
  • Critical Analysis. As the name implies, it critically evaluates the author’s work and can be up to 3,000 words.
  • Literature Review. It stands for the review of secondary literature sources. As a rule, such reviews do not present much new data and only evaluate the importance of sources and information that supports the author’s arguments.
  • Systematic Review. This case stands for research questions and articles that require a deeper synthesis of available facts or certain evidence. The purpose here is to define and evaluate the quality of the data obtained by the author.
  • Meta-Analysis Reviews. Once again, it is a systematic review focusing on a specific topic, the literature issues. You must provide a special quantitative estimate for exposure and intervention.
  • Clinical Trial Reviews. It means that one must provide a study related to an investigation offered by the author. It can relate to a drug or talk about a sample group of people, thus bringing it into the field of a defined population or a group of participants.
  • Perspective or Opinion Article Review. This is where one poses an opinion, meaning things can get biased toward a certain opinion. In writing a good review, a student can look for perspectives and evaluate the importance of the original article. Likewise, posing an opinion is one of the obligatory aspects.

  • Title page.
  • An article introduction presenting the main subject and/or a problem.
  • Brief article summary.
  • Critical article evaluation and/or a summary.
  • Conclusion with the moral lesson and discussion on the findings’ pros/cons.
  • Bibliography with relevant citations.

  • You provide an evaluation and summary of the author’s article.
  • Your audience can receive sufficient knowledge regarding the subject.
  • You have made points about the strongest arguments of the author.
  • You have criticized the author’s work and explained how it contributes to the scientific field.
  • You conclude your article review with your original thoughts and opinions without turning to additional research unless the grading rubric required it.

Step 1: learn about the article’s agenda., step 2: summarize the main article ideas, step 3: organization aspect of the review, step 4: article preview and take notes, step 5: paraphrasing and analysis, step 6: final evaluation.

  • An introduction. The topic of your study must be mentioned here in the first sentence. Indicate what your article contains and talk about the author’s background. Provide an order of the subjects you plan to discuss to explain what your readers expect. The introduction should provide the author’s claims and the main arguments that result in your thesis statement. When writing an introduction, you must determine the main argument.
  • Body paragraphs. This is where you provide an evaluation with a summary and write about the author’s work.
  • Conclusion. Speak of your reasons for providing a review and talk about whether you could support your thesis and what you have learned.
  • Works Cited page. Refer to your grading rubric to identify what citation style must be used.

How to write a good article review?

  • Do not write the statements in the first person. It is recommended to use the third person instead by turning to a formal academic tone.
  • Your introduction with the information about the original article should take from 10 to 25% of your assignment’s volume.
  • An introduction must end with a strong thesis and make an assumption or research the author’s main claim. A typical thesis to start an article review for an assignment may look this way:
  • Write down all the important points and share your findings. It will help to show that you have done your homework correctly.
  • Discuss how the article supports the claims and whether it provides good evidence.
  • Always provide background information about the author.
  • Use direct quotes to support your claims by turning to the original article.
  • Read your summary twice to evaluate whether it follows the main thesis.
  • Talk about the contributions of the author to the academic community.
  • Provide reasons for whether you support the author’s view or not. Why or why not?
  • Summarize all the important points in a conclusion part.

Firms tap into user knowledge to learn about the users’ needs. While users have been recognized as a valuable source of knowledge for innovation, few studies have investigated how their knowledge is integrated into innovation processes in the context of complex products and systems (CoPS). The purpose of this study is to reveal the practices of CoPS manufacturers to facilitate user knowledge utilization for innovation. We investigate two case companies, a medical device manufacturer and an aircraft manufacturer, and report on seven managerial practices for utilizing user knowledge. We adopt the absorptive capacity model in structuring our findings and elaborate three of the model's sub-capabilities (recognition of the value of user knowledge, acquisition of user knowledge, and assimilation/transformation of user knowledge) by proposing that each is associated with a distinct managerial goal and related practices: (1) Sensitizing the organization to the innovation potential of user knowledge, (2) identifying and gaining access to suitable user knowledge, and (3) analyzing and interpreting user knowledge and integrating it into product development. Our study contributes to the innovation management literature by analyzing the capabilities required to utilize user knowledge throughout the CoPS innovation process.

Diffusion of digital technologies into the manufacturing industry has created new opportunities for innovation that firms must address to remain competitive. We investigate the role of customer and user knowledge in the digital innovation processes of three global B2B manufacturing companies. We find that the B2B manufacturing industry's characteristics influence how users and customers may be leveraged. Customers making the purchasing decisions are considered for knowledge about short-term changes in market needs, while users working directly with the products provide long-term guidance for digital innovation. Literature reviews are valuable resources for the scientific community. With research accelerating at an unprecedented speed in recent years and more and more original papers being published, review articles have become increasingly important as a means to keep up to date with developments in a particular area of research. A good review article provides readers with an in-depth understanding of a field and highlights key gaps and challenges to address with future research. Writing a review article also helps to expand the writer's knowledge of their specialist area and to develop their analytical and communication skills, amongst other benefits. Thus, the importance of building review-writing into a scientific career cannot be overstated. In this instalment of The FEBS Journal's Words of Advice series, I provide detailed guidance on planning and writing an informative and engaging literature review.

Being specific adds clarity and situational relevance to your statements. Sharing greater detail about how you’ve reached your goals allows your manager to gain an understanding of your strategic approach, which accurately represents all of the hard work you’ve put into your achievements.

Here, we’ll share 2 self-evaluation for performance review examples and show you how you can improve your comments to be more specific.

Due to my interest and savvy with social media, I generated more MQLs through paid marketing channels. 

While you may be savvy with social media, this example fails to convey the many skills and strategies you utilized to meet your goal. It also lacks a clear, measurable example of your accomplishments. Instead, you could share more details such as:

I leveraged keyword research, site traffic analysis, and tracked social media trends to develop targeted and timely content that generated 50 new MQLs through our paid marketing channels, and successfully hit my OKR.

Much like a SMART goal for performance reviews , this example provides specific, measurable examples that illustrate your thought process and strategic approach to achieving your goals.

Include Facts and Figures

A prime example of a good self performance review is one that provides plenty of supporting evidence to back up your claims. Metrics serve as a helpful reference point for managers to clearly understand how your performance impacts results (they also serve as a useful leveraging tool in negotiating things like salary or job title).

Here, we’ll share 2 self-evaluation for performance review examples and show you how you can improve your comments to include metrics.

I managed our social media accounts and drafted the copy for all posts.

This example simply states that you executed a task in your job description, but it fails to convey your impact, which illustrates your value. Instead, share specific examples and numbers such as:

I grew the company LinkedIn following from 250 to 400 followers in 3 months and increased post engagement by 8% through continued interaction, targeted posts, and repurposed content.

This example provides tangible results that clearly lay out how your work benefits the business as well as your measurable progress and achievements.

Continuously strive for growth.

Performance reviews and self-evaluations are a time to reflect on your strengths and accomplishments as well as your areas for improvement. It can feel uncomfortable to discuss your performance shortcomings, as you may be nervous to point out areas of your work that need improvement. However there are ways you can reframe these misses as opportunities to grow rather than failures. Use positive, solution-oriented language that looks to the future when evaluating areas of improvement. 

Some phrases you can try are:

  • An area I’d like to focus on is …
  • This is what I’ve discovered thus far…
  • This is how I’d like to proceed in the future…
  • What I’ve learned from this is…

Track Your Accomplishments

You do a lot in the day-to-day of your role, and by the time self-evaluations come around, it can be difficult to recall the many accomplishments and tasks you’ve achieved throughout the year. 

A strategic way to refresh your memory and always have a pool of specific examples for a good self performance review is to maintain a running list of your accomplishments throughout your time at your company. This can be as simple as keeping a Word doc, notes app, or a dedicated notebook that you regularly update, we recommend closing out your week by listing out your accomplishments to keep this list up to date.

Self-evaluation questions vary from company to company, and even sometimes from department to department, however these core themes often show up in all self-assessments. Being able to assess and articulate your strengths and weaknesses in each area will allow you to write a comprehensive self-evaluation to best reflect your value as an employee.

In each category we’ll share what questions you should ask yourself, as well as several examples of a good self performance review as it relates to each category.

Can I effectively and efficiently run a team while giving clear guidance? What are my strengths and weaknesses in this area?

Here, we’ll share 6 self-evaluation for performance review examples illustrating both strengths and areas for improvement as it relates to leadership.

  • I communicate clearly and effectively with my team so they have the tools and clarity they need to achieve their best outcomes. One way I achieve this is by setting aside 15 minutes before each meeting to review the key objectives and action items I’d like to focus on for that call.
  • I provide systems and structure for my teams to reference so they understand what is expected of them and who they can collaborate with on any given task. An example of how I’ve done this is by implementing a team board in Asana to map out and track our key objectives and tasks. 
  • I create an open and honest work environment, and make my team feel safe to come to me with any concerns or questions they might have. I set a recurring “office hours” block on my calendar and communicated to my team that I am available to them to answer any questions or provide support should they need it.

Areas for Improvement

  • I am working on incorporating more positive feedback and celebrating my team’s achievements in our weekly meetings.
  • An area I’d like to focus on is improving my delegation skills across my team.
  • I often work late and send messages outside of working hours. What I’m learning from this is it puts pressure on my team and sets an expectation that we should work outside business hours. I’d like to begin scheduling my communications to be sent out during working hours to respect my team’s work/life balance.

Team Collaboration

How do I approach collaborating within my team as well as across other departments in the organization?

Here, we’ll share 6 self-evaluation for performance review examples illustrating both strengths and areas for improvement as it relates to team collaboration.

  • I thrive in a collaborative environment because my colleagues’ ideas and drive motivate me and inspire creativity. I regularly ask for input and feedback from my colleagues with the help of  surveys  and incorporate their direction into my projects and work.
  • I am constantly workshopping new ways to share ideas across teams, and recently implemented a Miro board to gather team input on projects.
  • Last quarter I put a call out to our engineering team for guest posts for our company blog. I recognize that other departments’ expertise and input are valuable to our brand and our collaboration can boost our marketing efforts.
  • I struggle to initiate collaborations with new team members because I am concerned that they will feel overwhelmed. I am learning to check in with these new employees and gauge their interest and bandwidth rather than assume they’re unable to collaborate.
  • I am learning that my enthusiasm at times can cause me to take up the majority of speaking time during team meetings, hindering team members from sharing their ideas. In the future, I’d like to come up with 2-3 ideas and allow others to speak before me.
  • I have a tendency to offer to be the final editor on projects before they are submitted, and have found it is a way for me to maintain control over a project. I am learning it’s important to allow others the opportunity to take the lead.

Creativity and Innovation

Am I able to think outside the box to develop new ways of doing things? What new methods or practices did I adopt or create? How did they contribute to my role?

  • I consistently demonstrated a willingness to experiment with new ideas and take calculated risks in my work. By trying out new approaches and processes, I was able to identify opportunities for improvement and develop innovative solutions to drive efficiency and productivity. One example is when I proposed and implemented a new system for tracking project progress that enabled our team to quickly identify bottlenecks and make adjustments to our workflow.
  • I actively sought out opportunities to bring creativity and innovation to my work this year. For example, I suggested and implemented a new approach to data visualization that made our reports more engaging and accessible to our target audience. 
  • I took an innovative approach to my work this year by experimenting with new technologies and tools. For example, I explored the use of softwares to automate routine tasks and improve the accuracy of customer outreach.
  • I’d like to pursue more learning opportunities such as free courses and webinars to expand my knowledge on creating TikTok content for our social media presence.
  • An area I’d like to focus on is developing my creative thinking skills in order to come up with more innovative solutions to complex problems rather than rely on existing ideas. To improve in this area, I plan to spend more time brainstorming and experimenting with new ideas to solve problems.
  • I’ve found I struggle to effectively communicate my creative ideas and proposals to others. In the future I plan to practice presenting my ideas to different audiences and seek out opportunities to participate in collaborative brainstorming sessions to develop my communication and collaboration skills around creativity.

  • I proactively identified and resolved technical issues that arose during our product launch, that helped mitigate potential risks and ensure a seamless launch. I did so by conducting regular audits and working closely with the UX team to remain up to date on user feedback.

Apple says that standard OLED screens don't produce the levels of brightness required for its XDR display technology, so the iPad Pro's OLED screen employs a feature Apple calls "Tandem OLED," which uses two OLED panels and combines the light from both.

The result is a screen that produces 1000 nits of full-screen brightness, with up to 1600 nits of peak brightness for HDR. This matches the numbers for the previous 13" iPad Pro (which used a mini-LED panel) but significantly improves upon the previous 11" model, which maxed out at 600 nits.

For the first time, the iPad Pro's screen includes a nano-texture glass option, which does a better job of maintaining image quality and contrast while reducing glare and which Apple says should provide a better experience for people using color-managed workflows or those who work in bright conditions with light and reflections.

The new iPad Pro is the first device to use Apple's newest M4 processor, skipping over the M3 generation entirely and seeing a big jump in processing power. Apple claims the M4 delivers up to 50% faster CPU performance than the previous M2-based iPad Pros and up to 4x the rendering performance of the M2.

The M4 also received an update to its Neural Engine, which is dedicated to AI processing. Apple claims it delivers faster performance than neural processing units in any PC and can support AI-based features in applications, citing the example of using AI in Final Cut Pro to isolate the subject from a 4K video clip at the tap of a button.

The iPad Pro receives a design makeover as well. To start, the front-facing camera has been moved from the short edge of the device to the long edge, making it much more usable in landscape view. Considering that Apple has often positioned the iPad as a possible laptop replacement, complete with detachable keyboards, this makes a lot of sense. In fact, it's surprising it took this long.

The new 11" iPad Pro is just 5.3mm (0.21") thick, compared to 5.9mm on the previous 11" model, and weighs in at 444g (0.98 lbs), 22g lighter than its predecessor.

The new 13" iPad Pro is even thinner at 5.1mm (0.20"), compared to 6.4mm for the previous 13" model, which represents an impressive 20% decrease in thickness. (Who says Apple isn't obsessed with making things thin?) It weighs 579g (1.28 lbs), compared to 682g on the previous model, a 15% drop.

Despite reduced weight and size, Apple says the new iPad Pros deliver the same level of battery performance as their predecessors thanks to the increased power efficiency of the M4 chip and that the new processor can deliver the same performance as the M2-based iPad Pros with just half the power.

Finally, the new models double the base-level storage to 256GB, with storage options up to 2TB. The 11" model starts at $999, and the 13" model starts at $1299.

Final Cut Pro 2 for iPad

Apple also announced Final Cut Pro 2 for iPad, the first major update since the application debuted a year ago. The new version adds external project support, allowing editors to create or open projects on an external storage device like an SSD. This makes it possible to start a project on an iPad and later bring it into Final Cut Pro on a Mac if desired.

The other significant feature in Final Cut Pro 2 is Live Multicam, which allows users to connect and preview up to four iPhone or iPad cameras live for multi-camera recording and editing. When using Live Multicam, Final Cut Pro will automatically transfer and sync video from each connected device to simplify a multi-camera workflow.

As with the original version of Final Cut Pro for iPad, the new version has a subscription model that costs $5/month or $49/year.

Final Cut Camera

In addition to Final Cut Pro 2, Apple introduced a free app called Final Cut Camera, which can be used with the new Live Multicam feature in Final Cut Pro 2. Final Cut Camera includes monitoring tools like zebras and audio meters, and allows users to adjust settings like white balance, ISO and shutter speed, and supports manual focus.

Final Cut Camera isn't limited to integration with Final Cut Pro. It can also be used as a standalone app for shooting video, providing much more granular control than Apple's built-in camera app and potentially creating some new competition for advanced third-party video recording apps like Blackmagic Camera or Filmic Pro.

For users who may not need or want all the features offered by the iPad Pro, Apple also unveiled new iPad Air models. Most noteworthy is the addition of a new 13" iPad Air. Apple says it added the larger model based on the fact that roughly half of iPad Pro users choose the 13" screen size.

The updated iPad Air models are built around Apple's M2 processor, which Apple claims results in 50% faster performance than the previous M1 model.

Like the iPad Pro, the iPad Air sees the front-facing camera move to the long edge of the device to better support camera use in landscape mode. Also, like the iPad Pro, base storage has doubled and now starts at 128GB with options up to 1TB.

The new iPad Air is compatible with accessories like Apple's Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil. The 11" iPad Air starts at $599, while the 13" model starts at $799.

Accessories

Along with new iPads and apps, Apple updated one popular accessory, the Magic Keyboard, and introduced a second, the Apple Pencil Pro.

The new Magic Keyboard , which connects to an iPad using magnets, is thinner than previous models and adds a row of function keys. It also includes a larger trackpad with haptic feedback. The new Magic Keyboard for 11" iPads retails for $299, while the model for 13" iPads retails for $349.

The Apple Pencil Pro is an evolution of the existing Apple Pencil. Its party trick is that the pencil barrel becomes a control surface: squeeze it, and a sensor in the barrel with haptic feedback can be used to do things like open a tool palette. It also includes a gyroscope, so it's possible to rotate the pencil to reorient the direction of a shape or brush. The Apple Pencil Pro works with iPad Pro and iPad Air and retails for $129.

Apple says all the new products announced today can be ordered immediately, with availability beginning next week.

Asking for a 5mm iPad - anyone?

Not here. All day battery life works for me. Thinner, and more importantly lighter is better — and more battery means more weight. I could care less about the camera bump. I have no hard facts, but my feeling is that the majority of people don’t particularly care about the bump one way or another. It is invisible with Folio case, Smart Folio Keyboard or Magic Keyboard attached.

I purchased an iPad Pro, latest model, last November. My intention was to store and edit RAW images on the road, without needed to carry my heavier MacBook Pro. This capability is very clearly what Apple advertised.

Unfortunately, iPad is not an effective platform for RAW photo editing. File management is poor, when it works. Their Files application, which is the only to access external storage, frequently crashed and often crashed and froze the iPad itself. I used Lightroom and it doesn’t seem nearly as full-featured, and was quite cumbersome to use. It’s nearly impossible to use without a Pencil.

Making the CPU twice as fast, or ten times faster, won’t solve the limitations of the platform. A MacBook Air or MacBook Pro provides a far better solution for RAW image editing on the go.

iPadOS is certainly more limited than MacOS. It will be interesting to see if Apple follows these new iPad releases with some meaningful software updates in iPadOS 18 at WWDC next month.

That said, I've been using an iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil as my primary editing tools for a few years now, editing my raw files in Lightroom. I've found it to work quite well (especially after some of the more recent updates to Lr). I import directly into Lr, so I don't mess around the Files app.

I love my iPad Pro and this looks great but there are not so many use cases for Ipad. I would never edit photos on it, and would absolutely not do video editing. I recently tried to edit some piano music on the iPad in Cubasis and quickly learned that I was wasting my time. Painting on the Ipad Pro is great though in Procreate, and I also like Miro for notes and images and of course Youtube and readings pdfs etc. But for serious use 3D, videos, photos, music etc the software is holding it back way too much.

Apple will *never* make iPad useful on par with the Macbooks.

- Its not a technical limitation, its a careful business calculation to cripple the iPads in software, exactly like Canon and Sony do to protect their cinema line of cameras.

Apple is not your friend, don't you ever fool yourself that the customers usecases is the focus of Apple - their sole focus is to sell you a new shiny device *every year* with the promise that this time, this year, you might just get what you want in a coming software update.

A thinner iPad Pro and keyboard are tempting. I have the 11" M1 Pro and it is a little thicker than I'd like with the magic keyboard.

I cannot do any serious work with display smaller than 15". 17" 4K is my standard laptop size. I personally find tablets fine only for reading, taking notes, and for Internet activities (including occasional video streaming for pleasure). Cannot wait until I see a 4K 15"+, probably flexible, tablet. Even if it has a worse dynamic range.

That’s great, but afaik apps like Capture One still aren’t allowed to work directly off of externally connected storage. Unless that changes, there just isn’t that much of an incentive for me to buy one of these.

Edit: posted this before reading through everything. If Final Cut can do it, maybe there’s hope for C1 as well.

Not a bad upgrade. If I didn't have the 4th generation of the iPad Pro 11 already, I might have been interested in upgrading from a first version. I like having the MacBook, iPad, iPhone connected through iCloud where I can do different tasks on the most appropriate device. Over the years I have learned to appreciate having a homogen hardware and software environment, as I have less patience for things not working. It is not perfect and honestly too expensive, but at least it makes me sleep better at night ;)

As always, Apple creates the platform plus a couple of apps, then third party developers do the rest. If the killer app for it isn't there yet for you, just wait.

Until iPadOS 18 is announced, I'm inclined to agree with fpessolano. The OS is lagging so far behind the hardware at the moment that other than a front camera relocation, there's nothing compelling me to upgrade.

I freely admit I was one of the naysayers when the original iPad was announced. But it was a brand new product in a new market segment that barely existed at that time. It's different now. The new iPad is not changing the game or as innovative as the original release.

Amazing screen and chipset, but shame about the (unnecessarily) limited software. That’s really the situation in a nutshell.

iPad is the realization of a childhood dream of owning Alan Kay's Dynabook - except the operating system, which is hamstrung in so many ways, I doubt I'll ever be able to ditch the laptop. And that is probably Apple's intention. Well, at least I can pair a PS5 controller now, that's nice. Maybe someday I'll get TextEdit.

If you want a good text editor for coding on iPad, I highly recommend Textastic. There's also Microsoft Word if you want it for writing.

As to limitations of the OS, what are you specifically concerned about? As a developer I don't find the system to be all that limited these days, but I'm wondering what people are worried about.

There’s no Photoshop or full version of Lightroom. Even the Microsoft Apps are limited in it, with various functions MIA. On an iPhone this is understandable, but the iPads have the same or, in this case, even better hardware than MacBooks, but can’t be used for that general productivity. Probably this is what people see as a frustrating limitation.

I know Apple want to position it as a new device type, with specially created apps, but it ends up feeling limited for productivity.

A 1,000 nit OLED display makes these very tempting second monitors for a Mac via sidecar.

To be honest, this is the least exciting for me. The greatest use I have found for HDR is when social media apps on my smartphone want to make an ad section more shouty. My regular monitor is a Benq PD3220U and it does none of that.

But maybe this is more useful for video than it is for photo?

@starbase, HDR is coming...slowly...but it's coming. Plus having a well-spec'd OLED display is nice for photo editing even in SDR.

It can be as fast and bright as it wants. It's still an iPad, with the limitations of an iPad, and for the money of an iPad Pro 13" 1TB with a keyboard ($2,350), I can get a pretty hot MacBook Pro (14" M3, 1TB, 36GB, 11/14/16 core), and I get three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI port, SDXC card slot, headphone jack and MagSafe 3 port thrown in for free ($2,400). Just sayin'...

Without the keyboard on the iPad the MacBook is three times as heavy. I already have one of those but looking forward to the much lighter iPad. Just sayin'.....

This has always been an argument people have tried to use against iPad. Look, if a laptop makes more sense for you, then get a laptop.

However there are types of apps that are just better on iPad. For example as a musician, I'm a big user of software synthesizers and sequencers on iPad where the multi-touch controls and compact size of the device make it ideal for live performance. Been using an iPad in my band for 10 years now.

The weight and form factor also makes it a lot easier to justify bringing in my camera backpack for photo stuff than my big ass MacBook Pro 16". Although frankly these days I use only an iPhone for any photography as my back pain has made the idea of bringing a big heavy micro four thirds full-frame camera anywhere just feels like insanity.

This would be a great machine for using Adobe Lightroom Mobile. I’ve always preferred using touch screen for adjusting sliders. The UI and tablet form factor makes the iPad perfect for editing vertical photos as you can maximise screen real estate while you edit compared to using a MacBook.

I agree, the iPad Mini fill a good niche for myself, especially in reading e-books as the larger iPads are too heavy for long time reading. Hopefully it will come soon.

@fuego - Bear in mind that the current Mini was updated at the same time as the iPhone 13 because they used the same Processor so it would make sense that the Mini will be updated this fall with the iPhone 16s.

Editing photos isn't too bad. But I agree: real work – text editing, drag & drop, switching between applications – is a pain.

Thanks for updating me. Last time I was doing video editing was in ios 15 and I had big difficulties getting the files off my device, so I gave up on video editing on ios. Now in ios 16 and 17, copying large file to SD card works perfectly it seems, with progress indicator too. Great!

For a photo site details of camera numbers, sizes and lenses might have been good, if that is available... I see: 12MP back (non-screen-side) camera Front: Ultra Wide 12MP camera with Centre Stage Which seems a bit rubbish... if I'm messaging someone I'd rather not have to get my phone out to take the picture I want and then transfer it across...

The relocated front camera is a welcome addition for those of us who find the current location frustrating when docked in a keyboard, but it's not compelling enough to spend considerable money on an upgrade.

I would rather have seen continuity camera implementation like on the Mac so you could use your iPhone as a webcam instead.

This iPad Pro also loses a camera compared to older models. There's just the one Wide rear-facing camera, no Ultra Wide there too. The iPad has never *really* been a camera device, but that hasn't stopped lots of people from using it that way. I figure the 12MP is good for shooting video, and most other capture is going to come from iPhones (or other cameras of course).

I got an iPad Pro as an occasional laptop replacement but the software/apps are the limitation rather than hardware. It is great for tethering but the editing apps are so limited that I never bother with them.

Lightroom Mobile is a great app. I use Adobe Creative Cloud and edit my RAW files on my iPhone 15 Pro all the time. I prefer using it to my aging MacBook Pro as it’s faster, but if I need to edit on a larger screen I can do so as the files sync in the cloud automatically.

I bought an iPad pro a few years ago and thought it was an awfully heavy waste of time. Everything could be accomplished, far better on a laptop. Useless for office work like writing letters, excel docs and emails and the photo apps were so sub standard and different to their desktop equivalents. The worst post purchase dissonance ever experienced and sold it two weeks later for a huge loss. Never again.

Software and ioS os quite a bit behind the hardware. I will pass this generation too (like the last 4 generations). Once iOS is flexible with good file management, I am a customer. Until then..

There are cultures like the British, in which people express discontent in a way that doesn’t include any of these words. In fact you might mistake what they’re saying for the opposite. Then there are cultures like mine (Dutch), where people express discontent in a much more honest and straightforward way.

But my point is, words don’t necessarily say anything regarding the intent of the person.

I'm pretty sure the banning of that word (like f4nb0y) was done long before DPR started covering Apple products tbh, it dates back to CaNikon's hammering of lower end bodies and/or could be related to the offensiveness of the word to some.

Ultimately you might be a little too biased towards Apple if you think they actually banned the word specifically for this instance. I don't consider either word offensive without context, but I'm sure both were used incessantly once upon a time to start brand flame wars on the DPR comments, ironic huh...

Yeah the only time I've been caught by the filter on that one is when using it on myself as well, heh, such as "I'm as big a fan--- of XYZ as they come but...". With as little moderation as the comments section sees, I'm not gonna begrudge the filter's simple approach, tho the context in which some of these were highly inflammatory is probably kind of outdated.

The only draw for me is the long edge mounted FaceTime camera (the current design drives me nuts). Otherwise, until the software and OS catches up with the hardware there’s nothing compelling me to upgrade - my 2018 iPad Pro still runs like a champ.

It’s also worth noting. If you already have an Apple Pencil, it’s not compatible with the new iPads. And the existing Magic Keyboard is only compatible with the new Air. If you use both these accessories the. Upgrading to the new iPad Pro could prove more expensive than you realise.

Not to mention, with apple silicon powered MacBook Airs, with iPad-like battery life and far less, lightweight designs, then other than missing a touch screen, a MacBook Air may be a better solution than an iPad if you keep one attached to a keyboard all day.

As an iPad but not MacBook user I still sometimes touch the screen on a MacBook expecting something to happen...

I've been caught doing that as well a few times. Honestly, I think Apple has lost focus on what they want the iPad to be. iPad OS isn't flexible enough to be a desktop or laptop replacement, but the top end machines are just as expensive or even more so than a more than capable mac or MacBook. Some tasks are just more complex than they need to be on an iPad - largely due to it not having a proper file system, but also some app developers not implementing share sheets consistently.

We're also at a place where Macs can run many iOS and iPadOS apps natively, and as I said above, MacBooks having iPad-like battery life and lightweight fanless designs. By the time you add a keyboard to an large iPad, you may as well use a MacBook Air. At this point, they're pretty much the same thing under the hood.

I wonder if Apple should focus on making the iPad the best mobile, touchscreen device in its class, than pushing it as a laptop alternative.

I bought the iPad Pro to get the larger screen - sounds like I might be able to save some money and get the Air - I don’t need a super-powerful CPU.

I'm thinking the same thing. I've fancied a larger iPad for some time but didn't fancy the price. I would need to replace my 11" magic keyboard, but there are plenty of those at half the price on the used market.

However, my Pencil 2 is not compatible with the new Air. Considering the new Air is pretty much a revamped previous-gen Pro in disguise, this is a rather scummy move by Apple. If there's enough backlash, I hope Apple rethinks this.

That would depend on one’s definition of function. Pencil support makes iPad Pro my go-to for masking and local adjustments. In practice, I use an iPad for the vast majority of my work, photography and otherwise.

The MacBook Air (and dated iMac 27) are used for fewer and fewer tasks as time goes by, though there are a handful Mac OS makes marginally easier and one or two for which it is necessary. (I’m looking at you keywording and Smart Albums.)

This is born out by me no longer feeling the need for a mid-range MacBook Pro to fill this role. I would expect to pay more for my primary computing device than the alternate. If the iPad fills a lessor role for you, there are lessor iPads.

I do. The iPad Pro and Apple Pencil -- with and without a keyboard -- are my primary photo editing tools, and I often prefer the iPad over a laptop when traveling. With a keyboard case, it's a perfectly good laptop replacement for sending emails, editing documents, scrolling the web, joining a video meeting, etc.

But then I can ditch the keyboard and have a great media consumption device for reading the news, watching movies, playing games, etc. It's going to take some meaningful updates to iPadOS for it to be a true laptop replacement, but if I had to choose between my iPad and my laptop, it would be a tough choice.

I think a better choice is the newest 13" MacBook Air. You get a cover, more software flexibility and more ports or better yet, the 15" version.

Let's hope the got a handle on battery drain though. I extensively used the M1 iPad Pro with external SSDs to be frank media management, especially with a large number of media files, was a pain and you could watch the battery percentages go down.

I can't find the weight specs of the new magic keyboard. I'm wondering how the 13" iPad Pro and new magic keyboard compares to carrying around a 13" iPad Air?

I don't like that apps like Final Cut are only available on a subscription plan, not one-time purchase.

Archive SQL Server Data using the SQL OUTPUT Clause

Is there a more direct and better way to move or archive data than the traditional Insert and Delete method? If done correctly, the traditional method requires Transaction Control and Error checking to ensure that records are not deleted unless first copied. What if this could be done in one step?

This tip explores a better, more direct, and more optimized method for moving or archiving data in SQL. This method does not require transaction control as it consolidates the move and deletion of records to a single SQL statement using the OUTPUT clause.

This tip will show a data move technique using a Delete with an OUTPUT clause redirecting output directly into an archive table. This is done in one step, so transaction control wrapping an insert and delete is not needed to ensure integrity. Also, if you have massive amounts of data to move, this tip will show how this can be done in controlled batches.

Massive amounts of data can be many records or big data like images or XML. For this, I will use Microsoft's sample database, WideWorldImporters. It's [Warehouse].[VehicleTemperatures] table has approximately 600,000 records, which is significant enough for this demo. I will first create new tables to keep the integrity of the sample database, then review the distribution of the data to determine how to batch the records to a controlled move. Finally, I will show the traditional archive methods and a few examples using the OUTPUT clause method.

Setup SQL Server Archiving Example

Using the WideWorldImporters database, I will create a copy of the table [Warehouse].[VehicleTemperatures] into a new schema "mssqltips" and table I will name [mssqltips].[VehicleTemperatures] as my source table. Then I will create the empty Archive table [mssqltips].[VehicleTemperaturesArchive]. The table [Warehouse].[VehicleTemperatures] has an Identity property on the Primary Key column VehicleTemperatureID. This Identity property will be on all the tables in this example and will be handled appropriately in the code snippets. I use the simple Select Into method for creating both tables under the new Schema "mssqltips".

Note: The tables in this example have a Primary Key column with an Identity property, so you will see the additional code to handle the Identity inserts throughout the code snippets. It is important to maintain those values in the archive tables. Exclude the Identity Insert lines of code if your tables do not have an identity property.

The counts confirm that the tables are created and show the initial row counts of each.

Cleanup to Re-Run

Here is the cleanup script to re-run the setup to re-test later.

Review Data to Determine Batch Size

The [Warehouse].[VehicleTemperatures] table in this example is approximately 600,000 rows. I can easily handle this in a single operation in a reasonably short time. However, for this demo, I will do it in smaller chunks to demonstrate the technique. If you run into a data move situation that runs for a long period of time, then this example will show one way to perform data moves in controlled batches. To archive a very large table, you will likely do it in batches rather than all at once in a single transaction.

To help determine potential batch sizes, you will need to learn the distribution of your data. Typically, you will want to pick a batch size based on a time interval. This works if you have a date column in the table indicating when the records were created. If you do not have a date column in your table, you could use the total row count and divide that based on a reasonable batch size. This will help determine how many batches it will take to complete the archive.

In this example, I have settled on a batch size based on the number of weekly records inserted. Run the query below to see the record counts per week. The number of records inserted weekly in the sample database is approximately 3000, which I will use for the archive batch size. Generally, the batch size should be such that the process can run in relatively quick chunks. For very large tables, some advantages to moving or deleting data in reasonable batch sizes are minimizing database contention, keeping the transaction log size backups in check, and avoiding long-running transactions.

This query returns 196 rows. Using a batch size of 3000 rows, I will iterate through approximately 196 batches.

Traditional SQL Server Archive – Insert and Delete with Transaction Control

The traditional method for moving data includes 1) copying the data to a new table and 2) deleting the copied rows. This should be done in a controlled transaction with error handling to ensure both steps succeed before committing the transaction.

Note: The runtimes for the Insert & Delete method for moving data:

  • Insert elapsed time: 2110 ms
  • Delete elapsed time: 389 ms
  • Total: 2499 ms

Move Data with SQL Server OUTPUT Clause

This example introduces the data move with the OUTPUT clause. Here, we do not include a sort option to control which records get deleted first. However, with less overhead, this option is more efficient than the Traditional Insert and Delete method. This code may be added to a stored procedure and scheduled in a SQL Agent Job for ongoing archive maintenance or if you have many deletes to do and want to run after peak hours.

If your destination Archive table does not have a clustered key, since it may cause page splits on load and slow the inserts down, you may consider creating the Archive table as a Heap and Adding a cluster key later or skipping to the next section.

Note the elapsed time for moving: with the OUTPUT clause is 122 ms, compared to the 2499 ms for the Traditional Insert and Delete.

Move SQL Server Data with OUTPUT Clause and Control

This example is similar to the previous method, but we add Control to process the older records first. Though the older records are archived first, the sequence in which the records are inserted is not expected to be sequential. The database table ([Warehouse].[VehicleTemperatures]) that I based this example on has a non-cluster primary key. You may want to test additional scenarios with tables that have clustered keys. This method is still more efficient than the Traditional Insert and Delete method, but the added control does add a little more overhead.

The additional code to move the oldest records first results in 774 ms, which is much faster than 2499 ms for the Traditional Insert and Delete.

Move SQL Server Data with OUTPUT Clause Ad Hoc Loop

In this example, I show how to run the code easily in a loop, moving 5000 rows at a time. This might be used if you have a reasonable amount of data to archive and require a one-time cleanup.

The 100 loops in this test ran in approximately 2.5 minutes. In this scenario, do the math to determine how many loops to run! (Total Records / Batch Size = Number of Loops)

This tip shows more direct ways to move data using the OUTPUT clause. This will even work across databases. This example is a relatively small table, as I could have archived this table in a single batch. However, in real life, I have seen archive processes run for many hours against production systems that could have benefited by implementing some control over the batch size. Typical production scenarios involve tables that are perpetually growing and need to be trimmed for performance or archived for retention reasons. Also, you may want to set up an archive job to automate your archive process to keep source tables trimmed to target table sizes. Other methods may include moving all the records to a new table first and then doing controlled deletes. Also, if you must delete the data and not move a copy to another table, you can still do it in controlled batches, as demonstrated in this tip.
