Book Blurb: India has produced some of the world’s greatest religious leaders, sages, saints, philosophers, and spiritual thinkers. They were monks, nuns, and renunciates, nationalists, and reformers. No one religion had a Monopoly on them. They range from Mahavira and Buddha, who lived over 2, 500 years ago, to medieval saints like Chishti, avvaiyar, and Guru Nanak, to more recent philosophers and religious icons such as Vivekananda, Ramakrishna, saint Teresa, and many others. The spiritual and philosophical heritage they left behind is India’s gift to all Indians and the world. In the ‘life lessons’ series we publish the essential teachings of some of India’s best-known spiritual teachers, along with commentaries and biographical notes. Each book will be a handy companion to help the reader along the difficult pathways of life.

Review: Aleph’s Life Lessons series attempts to simplify the teachings of great scholars and thinkers into a sort of handy guide for an easy read and understanding for the layman.

Swami Vivekananda is difficult to understand and most people have to make do with accounts that circulate on the internet archives, not always true and sometimes mixed. This is a short book that captures the gist of Vedanta in an easy language.

“The Swami visualised a union between the East and the West through the exchange of Indian spirituality and Western knowledge.”

There is a wealth of knowledge within these pages and it is communicated in an easy to understand style which can serve as a handy introductory guide for anybody interested in Swami Vivekananda’s teachings. Swami Vivekananda found his guru in Ramkrishna Paramhansa and the discussions make for an interesting read. There is a need to take Swami Vivekananda’s teachings to a younger generation as great men remain relevant for generations after.

The book starts with an introductory chapter on Swami Vivekananda and his life, his philosophy and the later text is dedicated to the various teachings that arose from the discussions of Swami Vivekananda with his guru.

Each book will be a handy companion to help the reader along the difficult pathways of life. Swami Vivekananda was a nineteenth-century philosopher, monk, and nationalist. Born Narendranath data into an aristocratic Bengali Kayastha family of Calcutta, he showed a strong inclination towards spirituality from a young age. Initially influenced by Brahman samaji ideas, he later came into contact with Western esotericism. He then became a disciple of the acclaimed mystic Swami Ramakrishna who introduced him to Advaita Vedanta. Vivekananda went on to become a proponent of Vedanta and yoga, which he famously introduced to the world at the Parliament of the world’s religions in Chicago in 1893. Vivekananda set up the monastic Ramakrishna order after the death of his Guru. He then left the monastery and led the life of a wandering ascetic, travelling through the subcontinent, filled with the desire to reconcile and assimilate modern scientific processes with ancient Hindu ideals. Also credited with raising interfaith awareness, Swami Vivekananda preached the philosophy of neo-vedanta—advaita—which reconciled the different paths to liberation. He revived Hinduism in India and contributed to nascent nationalistic thought. His view of Patriotism was not parochial, thus garnering him universal respect and admiration. An accomplished orator, writer, and poet, as well as a philosopher, his teachings remain just as relevant today as they were when he first Thunder his message to his countrymen and the world over a century ago. Edited by nanditha Krishna, ‘believe in yourself’ brings together Swami Vivekananda core teachings.

Vivekananda: spirituality for leadership & success | book review.

Posted by: Editor2 January 12, 2022 in Books , English Leave a comment

Swami Vivekanand or Swami Vivekananda was born as Narendranath Datta (shortened to Narendra or Naren) in Kolkata (then Calcutta). Since last few generation he is viewed as an inspiration, especially by Bharatiya (that is Indian) youth. His iconic speech in Chicago, his dedicated work and efforts to spread the “Ramakrishna Mission” are iconic and remarkable. His life is nothing less than a legend. He is known for his will power and incidents from his life are seen by the youth as as “life lessons”.

Pranay , an author from India (that is Bharat) has recently penned a few books in “ Spirituality for Leadership and Success ” series. In this series he represented his analysis and views for “how to learn Leadership lessons from various ancient Indian scriptures and lives of various prominent figures”. We found the concept interesting and with the hope that these book enlighten some of the interesting aspects of ancient Indian literature, we have started reading books from this series.

Here are quick links to his books in the same series we’ve reviewed so far.

  • Hinduism: Spirituality for Leadership and Success
  • GITA: Spirituality for Leadership and Success By Pranay
  • BUDDHA: Spirituality for Leadership and Success By Pranay

Recently I got a chance to read another book in the series “ Vivekananda: Spirituality For Leadership & Success ” by Pranay. Actually, this book review was planned to be published on some other date, but, what could have been better than the birthday of “Swami Vivekananda” (12 January) for the same?!

By the way, we are thankful to “Fingerprint! Publishing” for providing us the review copy. The views and reviews preseented here are uninfluenced and unbiased, as always.

This Is Here In For You

Book Cover:

Of course, we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. But, the cover page is responsible for the first impression of the book. It also helps the book to stand out while put in display along with many other items. Without a doubt, an attractive cover page attracts potential readers towards it.

Let us take a look at the cover page of this book.

Vivekananda: Spirituality For Leadership & Success | Book Cover

Vivekananda: Spirituality For Leadership & Success | Book Cover

Like the other books in this series, this one also has a white background, reflecting the vastness and clarity – the spirituality – brings in.

The middle section holds an illustration of iconic pose of Swami Vivekananda surrounded by colorful artwork. It is really appealing and eye catcher. Definitely a well designed cover page that remains true to the book content.

The Book And My Views For The Same:

Usually, we talk about a book in two separate segment dedicated to the book content and our views and reviews distinctively. The nature of this book is quite different. So let us merge both these segments here.

I would love to start with a quote from the book, that summarizes the life of Swami Vivekananda, beautifully.

Vivekananda bridged the ancient and the modern, the East and the West. He was a spiritual warrior.

Leadership is all about attitude. While there are billions of people currently living on the planet, we remember only a few of them. Why? Because, they have made the impact. Consider how many people have lived on the earth during the last few hundred or thousands of years? And, yet, the list of people who made an impact on mankind and its history and “then future”, is small. If we remember Vivekananda even after this many years of his death, his life must have made an impact we cannot ignore right?

This feat could have been achieved by him with his leadership qualities.

In this book you find some practical rules of leadership that are reflected in the life events of Vivekananda.

Don’t Get Restricted by Ideologies His message is to expand our horizons, beyond ideologies or creeds. Fear blocks our energy! Infinity Is Your Inner Being. Faith is magical. It can make people move mountains. People May Not Be Happy with Visionaries! Without peace, success is very superficial. Do the Essential, Drop the Unessential. Welcome All Things. Realize Your Own Worthiness (Atma-Mulya). Give from Your Heart.

When you have a clear vision about your goal and the possible path you should take, it would be unlikely that you won’t achieve it. I remember reading incidents from Vivekananda’s life in my early childhood. The one thing that stuck with me is the incident reflecting his curiosity and clarity of thoughts at a very tender age. He was looking for someone who can guide him in life and his question was very specific, Have you met the God/Goddess? Can you make me meet him/her? And, he found his Guru – Ramkrishna Paramhans – whom he followed thoughout his life.

The book could have included more incidents belong to this Guru-Shishya duo and even from the life of Vivekananda. According to me, this is a downside of the book.

The following lines of the book reflects the impact of Vivekananda’s thoughts globally. As a matter of fact, this philanthropy drive is running in full-throttle.

The whole tradition of American philanthropy which was started by John D. Rockefeller, was actually influenced by Vivekananda. And following Rockefeller’s example, great American entrepreneurs such as Warren Buffett and Bill Gates continued the tradition of giving back their wealth for the good of humanity.
One very important reason why great world visionaries, leaders, and luminaries such as Jamsetji Tata, John D. Rockefeller, Emma Calve, Sarah Bernhardt, and others were deeply attracted to Swami Vivekananda was because he used to constantly tell people that his method is not about a particular “ideology” or a particular belief system.

The author, also didn’t forget to include quotes from other remarkable human beings ever walked on the earth.

In fact, Gautam Buddha also used to say that our consciousness shapes our world.

For those who are looking for leadership lessons, the author has mentioned them in just a couple of lines.

There are three essential power principles for leaders that Swami Vivekananda can teach us. The first is courage. The second is faith. And the third is strength.

And if you want to explore them in depth, with relevant references, you can find them spread over the book. Here I am quoting some of them:

Vivekananda used to emphasize the old Vedantic teaching that infinity (ananta) and endless power (asheshbal) are what comprise your inner being. And to know that truth is really to know yourself. Vivekananda talked about atomic theory in the pre-atomic age. He was so advanced in his thinking. Renowned figures such as Sarah Bernhardt, Emma Calve, J. D. Salinger, and others were great fans of his. Vivekananda used to say that the true person of spirituality is one who can welcome all circumstances within his or her life. One of Vivekananda’s most crucial teachings was to make people realize their own self-worth (atma-mulya).

In this book, the author tries to look up for the “leadership” qualities that lead to success from a spiritual perspective. Thus, discussion about consciousness and other abstract aspects is expected. The book talks about the “warrior” mentality to overcome the possible hurdles the life can bring form you.

The Mightier Warrior is in a Higher State of Consciousness. As Krishna tells Arjun, the true person of knowing is one who’s very way of walking, way of talking, way of functioning, changes. So too Vivekananda was trying to make people ‘know’ or be acquainted with their own higher self, which resides in the interior of their own existence.

And, while exploring the lessons, the author doesn’t shy away from using direct words.

Expand, Don’t Shrink. In fact, being creative is the art of expanding. Otherwise, we remain very superficial. We remain content with what we are and what we have.

The book also refers quote from other remarkable people like the founder of IBM, Thomas Watson Sr. and others. The author also knows that the life must have been taken seriously, as we get it to live once only, but, if we become serious in living it, we cannot enjoy our journey. And, Swami Vivekananda believed in the same as well.

Take Work as Play (Leela). Vivekananda strongly believed in the concept of leela which Krishna describes and exhibits through his divine avatar.

When you are caught by fear, the clarity of your vision would be affected and thus the decisions you take may not be the right ones. A leader cannot afford that. The following lines in the book can be used as guidelines during those circumstances.

People are always going past obstacles with a feeling of dread, or a feeling of fear within their hearts. It requires tremendous courage to give from the heart, but it is simply a question of adjustment in attitude. Most people spend too much time fighting with their own emotions and their own selves.

The above mentioned quotes must have given you a fair idea about the content of the book and its quality. To me, it is a book worth reading. Of course, you will miss some popular quotes from Vivekananda and you feel that many more incidents from his life could have been included here. It could have been a positive improvement in the book.

This book has a wide canvas, and what you learn from it, is strictly upon you. Rather than spending time watching/reading something meaningless, it is better to invest your most valuable asset, your time, reading such meaningful works. And if you are looking for only one sentence leadership lesson from Swami Vivekananda, just remember what he said:

Arise, Awake And Stop Not Till The Goal Is Reached.

Recently, there were some promotional offers going on for the Kindle edition of this book. So keep looking for such offers, and you may find it at a very competitive price.

A nice and enriching book that talks about spirituality and modern day management. Such books are not meant for time pass reading. You need to run a cycle to re-read and implement the thoughts in actions, to get the most of it. If you plan to do so, go for this book. It is a swift read.

August 11, 2011 By VivekaVani

(Written to “Kidi” on March 3, 1894, from Chicago.)

I agree with you so far that faith is a wonderful insight and that it alone can save; but there is the danger in it of breeding fanaticism and barring further progress.

Jnâna is all right; but there is the danger of its becoming dry intellectualism. Love is great and noble; but it may die away in meaningless sentimentalism.

A harmony of all these is the thing required. Ramakrishna was such a harmony. Such beings are few and far between; but keeping him and his teachings as the ideal, we can move on. And if amongst us, each one may not individually attain to that perfection, still we may get it collectively by counteracting, equipoising, adjusting, and fulfilling one another. This would be  harmony  by a number of persons and a decided advance on all other forms and creeds.

For a religion to be effective, enthusiasm is necessary. At the same time we must try to avoid the danger of multiplying creeds. We avoid that by being a nonsectarian sect, having all the advantages of a sect and the broadness of a universal religion.

God, though everywhere, can be known to us in and through human character. No character was ever so perfect as Ramakrishna’s, and that should be the centre round which we ought to rally, at the same time allowing everybody to regard him in his own light, either as God, saviour, teacher, model, or great man, just as he pleases. We preach neither social equality nor inequality, but that every being has the same rights, and insist upon freedom of thought and action in every way.

We reject none, neither theist, nor pantheist, monist, polytheist, agnostic, nor atheist; the only condition of being a disciple is modelling a character at once the broadest and the most intense. Nor do we insist upon particular codes of morality as to conduct, or character, or eating and drinking, except so far as it injures others.

Whatever retards the onward progress or helps the downward fall is  vice ; whatever helps in coming up and becoming harmonised is  virtue .

We leave everybody free to know, select, and follow whatever suits and helps him. Thus, for example, eating meat may help one, eating fruit another. Each is welcome to his own peculiarity, but he has no right to criticise the conduct of others, because that would, if followed by him, injure him, much less to insist that others should follow his way. A wife may help some people in this progress, to others she may be a positive injury. But the unmarried man has no right to say that the married disciple is wrong, much less to force his own ideal of morality upon his brother.

We believe that every being is divine, is God. Every soul is a sun covered over with clouds of ignorance, the difference between soul and soul is owing to the difference in density of these layers of clouds. We believe that this is the conscious or unconscious basis of all religions, and that this is the explanation of the whole history of human progress either in the material, intellectual, or spiritual plane — the same Spirit is manifesting through different planes.

We believe that this is the very essence of the Vedas.

We believe that it is the duty of every  soul  to treat, think of, and behave to other  souls  as such, i.e. as  Gods , and not hate or despise, or vilify, or try to injure them by any manner or means. This is the duty not only of the Sannyasin, but of all men and women.

The soul has neither sex, nor caste, nor imperfection

We believe that nowhere throughout the Vedas, Darshanas, or Purânas, or Tantras, is it ever said that the soul has any sex, creed, or caste. Therefore we agree with those who say, “What has religion to do with social reforms?” But they must also agree with us when we tell them that religion has no business to formulate social laws and insist on the difference between beings, because its aim and end is to obliterate all such fictions and monstrosities.

If it be pleaded that through this difference we would reach the final equality and unity, we answer that the same religion has said over and over again that mud cannot be washed with mud. As if a man can be moral by being immoral!

Social laws were created by economic conditions under the sanction of religion. The terrible mistake of religion was to interfere in social matters. But how hypocritically it says and thereby contradicts itself, “Social reform is not the business of religion”! True, what we want is that religion should not be a social reformer, but we insist at the same time that society has no right to become a religious law-giver. Hands off! Keep yourself to your own bounds and everything would come right.

Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man.

Religion is the manifestation of the Divinity already in man.

Therefore the only duty of the teacher in both cases is to remove all obstructions from the way. Hands off! as I always say, and everything will be right. That is, our duty is to clear the way. The Lord does the rest.

Especially, therefore, you must bear in mind that religion has to do only with the soul and has no business to interfere in social matters; you must also bear in mind that this applies completely to the mischief which has already been done. It is as if a man after forcibly taking possession of another’s property cries through the nose when that man tries to regain it — and preaches the doctrine of the sanctity of human right!

What business had the priests to interfere (to the misery of millions of human beings) in every social matter?

You speak of the meat-eating Kshatriya. Meat or no meat, it is they who are the fathers of all that is noble and beautiful in Hinduism. Who wrote the Upanishads? Who was Râma? Who was Krishna? Who was Buddha? Who were the Tirthankaras of the Jains? Whenever the Kshatriyas have preached religion, they have given it to everybody; and whenever the Brahmins wrote anything, they would deny all right to others. Read the Gitâ and the Sutras of Vyâsa, or get someone to read them to you. In the Gita the way is laid open to all men and women, to all caste and colour, but Vyasa tries to put meanings upon the Vedas to cheat the poor Shudras. Is God a nervous fool like you that the flow of His river of mercy would be dammed up by a piece of meat? If such be He, His value is not a pie!

Hope nothing from me, but I am convinced as I have written to you, and spoken to you, that India is to be saved by the Indians themselves. So you, young men of the motherland, can dozens of you become almost fanatics over this new ideal? Take thought, collect materials, write a sketch of the life of Ramakrishna,  studiously avoiding all miracles . The life should be written as an illustration of the doctrines he preached. Only his — do not bring me or any living persons into that. The main aim should be to give to the world what he taught, and the life as illustrating that. I, unworthy though I am, had one commission — to bring out the casket of jewels that was placed in my charge and make it over to you. Why to you? Because the hypocrites, the jealous, the slavish, and the cowardly, those who believe in matter only, can never do anything. Jealousy is the bane of our national character, natural to slaves. Even the Lord with all His power could do nothing on account of this jealousy. Think of me as one who has done all his duty and is now dead and gone. Think that the whole work is upon your shoulders. Think that you, young men of our motherland, are destined to do this. Put yourselves to the task. Lord bless you. Leave me, throw me quite out of sight. Preach the new ideal, the new doctrine, the new life. Preach against nobody, against no custom. Preach neither for nor against caste or any other social evil. Preach to let “hands off”, and everything will come right.

My blessings on you all, my brave, steadfast, and loving souls.
