Most Kenyans at some point have watched DJ Afro’s movies. He is by far the most famous movie commentator in Kenya. In fact, in some areas, a group of people meet up and pay a small amount of cash to watch a DJ Afro movie. The movies are fun and engaging with his humorous voice coming through the screen. This has made it possible for people in Kenya and even Tanzania to watch and have knowledge of how a movie is flowing, even if it is in a language they do not understand.

His real name is James Muigai. DJ afro is his stage name. As he grew in popularity, some started copying his stage name and even using it to form Facebook pages. Therefore, to distinguish himself, he added some words to his name, DJ Afro Amigos AKA Kimoda.

DJ Afro is a very private man. He has never shared details about his family in any interviews he has done. The place he went to school is also still a mystery.

Career Achievements

At a time when most people were not even aware that they could translate movies for a living, DJ Afro began doing it. It was a very unique idea coined by an equally unique person. He has done this job for over 14 years, he marked his 10 th year in 2016. His journey to fame was not an easy one. Like most successful people he too struggled.

“ Ten years ago, we could not record a voice over due to lack of equipments, ”he said. “I had to commentate live in a video shows in Kiserian and Rongai on the outskirts of Nairobi. These shows were very popular then,” he told the Daily Nation.

At one point, someone called him out for lying which led to the drying up of his gigs. This was very difficult for him as he struggled so much to get gigs which prompted him to move to Nakuru.

While in Nakuru, he had no equipment of his own.

“ When I moved to Nakuru I had nothing apart from my talent and passion. This friend offered me a recording and a TV set at a small fee,” DJ Afro told Daily Nation.

He saved up for a year and managed to buy his own equipment. Commentating on a movie is not an easy task.

“I usually wake up very early in the morning to watch movies. I can watch up to ten movies before I decide which one to work on, based on my intended audience, ”he said.

In an interview with Gikuyu TV, he also added that sometimes he enters the studio at 6 in the morning only to leave at midnight having worked on one movie alone.

The witty man credited his success to God. By commentating on movies, he has managed to land various MC gigs in both Kenya and Tanzania.

His movies are being broadcasted by Gikuyu TV after most stations rejected his request to broadcast them.

The man is not worried about copyright. He feels that the actors should even thank him as he has made them popular in Kenya.

In 2016, he celebrated ten years as a movie commentator in Afraha Stadium, Nakuru. The celebration was to thank God for helping him achieve success and featured various musicians from Kenya and Tanzania.

After taking his time to work on a movie, he sells it at shs60 per recording. However, the moment he sells one movie, others pirate it and sell it for shs5. This means that after all his hard work, he ends up with very little from the movie. However, he said it was okay since his movies are also able to earn other people their daily bread.

In 2018, he caught the attention of Kenya Films and Classification Board (KFCB). The CEO, Dr. Ezekiel Mutua was not happy with the crude language used in most of his movies. While the matter was being looked into, his movies were suspended with Gikuyu TV being ordered not to air them. DJ Afro accepted his mistake and added that some of the movies being circulated were some of his past works that have been reproduced by others. The ban was lifted after discussions with the board and his movies still air on Gikuyu TV.

Dj Afro: Movie commentator who’s taken Kenya by storm

James Muigai, who goes by his stage name, DJ Afro is by far the most famous movie commentator in Kenya. Most Kenyans have seen his film voice-overs at some point, while even some guys pay to meet up and get entertained by his narrations.

DJ Afro became a popular name, especially for people in Kenya and Tanzania who needed knowledge of how a movie flows, even if they did not understand the language. People began impersonating him, and to differentiate himself, he changed his name to DJ Afro AKA Kimoda.

The movie commentator is renowned for his trademark ad-libs, including phrases like ‘alrrriiiight,’ ‘asante sana,’ and ‘cheki maneno,’ which have become favourites among fans. His unique voice, pitch, and enthusiastic narration style give him an edge over his peers.

The DJ remains everyone’s favourite in the midst of many who have been trained to be like him and follow in his footsteps but none can match up to him.

James Muigai began honing his craft in 2006, by consistently delivering humourous commentary on videos. He did these gigs at local theatres in Rongai and Kiserian. Initially, he faced challenges and was forced to relocate after some people criticized his work.

“Ten years ago, we could not record a voice-over due to a lack of equipment. I had to commentate live in a video show in Kiserian and Rongai on the outskirts of Nairobi. These shows were very popular then,” he said in a past interview.

After facing disappointment from critics, DJ Afro relocated to Nakuru with no material possessions. With only his talents and dreams, he found support in Nakuru, making friends with someone who provided him with commentating and recording equipment.

He attributes his success to God, emphasizing that he always prioritized God before starting his journey and continues to do so as he makes a living out of his craft.

“If you want to succeed as an artist, put God first. It’s not that I’m very hardworking, but it is because of God’s favour that I am succeeding.”

“Secondly, you have to be very creative. You have to be more creative with each day. So you have to study the movie, and find a way to make it interesting,” he added.

DJ Afro disclosed that he owns a movie shop in Nakuru where he sells movies. Asked about copyright concerns, he brushed off any worries arguing instead that actors and producers of the movies should reward him for making them famous.

“If you look at some of these movies, they are done in foreign languages and most times, people don’t even understand what is going on. This is where I come in, and make the movie interesting for everyone,” he mentioned.

In 2018, DJ Afro landed in hot waters with the Kenya Films Classification Board (KFCB) CEO, Ezekiel Mutua who disliked the rough language he used in his movie narrations. The incident was investigated and his films were suspended. Gikuyu TV was asked not to air his movies.

DJ Afro admitted to his errors and noted that some of his films being disseminated were his previous works, replicated by others. After discussions with KFCB, the ban was lifted and his films were allowed to air on TV.

In 2021, Kenyans on Twitter (now KOX) cried out for movie streaming service Netflix to promote the DJ by allowing him to feature on Netflix Kenya’s movie voiceovers. This is after the company hired a wannabe DJ Afro instead of the real one.

Netflix heeded their pleas and the famous DJ, was contracted to voice the trailer for the movie Thunder Force.

DJ Afro moved to Nakuru with nothing but his talent and passion. Luckily, he met a friend who helped him out with the equipment to start commentating and recording movies.

After a year worth of savings, he managed to buy his own equipment.

During an interview on Citizen TV in 2016, DJ Afro credited his success to God, stating that before he began his journey and as he continues to make a living out of it, he always puts God first.

"If you want to succeed as an artist, put God first. It's not that I'm very hardworking, but it is because of God's favour that I am succeeding.

"Secondly, you have to very creative. You have to be more creative with each day. So you have to study the movie, and find a way to make it interesting," DJ Afro stated.

He further revealed that he owns a shop in Nakuru Town from where he sells his movies.

Dj afro shines as emcee during jamhuri celebrations.

James Muigai, better known as DJ Afro, the popular movie commentator, showcased his unique emceeing skills during the Jamhuri Celebrations on Tuesday, 12 December, warming the hearts of Kenyans.

DJ Afro took center stage as he introduced a comedy skit session featuring top names in the acting industry, performing in front of the head of state, President William Ruto, as part of the celebrations marking the 60th Jamhuri Day.

While DJ Afro’s face might not be familiar to many, who often hear his voiceover in movies, his lively emceeing added a special touch to the event.

The moment saw a lineup of renowned comedians, actors, and digital influencers, including Comedian Terence alias Papa Fredi, Inspekta Mwala, Mother-in-law actress Charity Mwamba, Captain Otoyo, Mtumishi, Mchungaji, actress Wilbroda, Makokha, Rukia, Ondiek Nyuka Akwota, among others.

“Alriiiight! Asante sana. Maridadi, pozi pozi aah tena pozi Kabisaaa!,” Dj Afro began his part, setting the stage for the celebrated comedians to take their positions for the performances.

“Kikosi kilicho mbele yenu ni kikosi cha wasanii wa sanaa pahali na ambapo kati ya vile vipindi vilivyoweza kuanzishwa ni vipindi kama vile tahamaki, vituko, je huu ni ungwana? na Vipindi kama vile Tausi…” he said.

Rukia then took to the stage with her performance, adding a dose of humor to the celebration.

After her act, DJ Afro paid tribute to the late Mzee Ojwang, a legendary figure in the Kenyan entertainment scene.

“Na vile vile hatuezi tukamsahau bila shaka pale Mzee Ojwang’ katika kipindi cha Vitimbi. Ishi na Mungu na akamweke pahali pema peponi,” he said.

(And likewise, we cannot forget Mzee Ojwang’, undoubtedly, in the show Vitimbi. May he rest in peace and may God keep him in a good place in heaven).

Legendary comedians Ondiek Nyuka Akwota and Makhoha took over with their humorous performance, creating laughter among the gathering.

The duo engaged in banter, with Ondiek poking fun at Makhoha’s attire for the day.

The light-hearted exchange ended with both comedians wishing each other a happy Jamhuri Day.

DJ Afro once again took the opportunity to remember the late veteran actor Papa Shirandula and then introduced Wilbroda to the stage.

“Mtukufu Rais, kama vile umeskia mimi ni mjane, niko single, niko vacant. Yaani sina mtu mtuku Rais. Uko na marafiki zako ambao wako single kama mimi hata kwa cabinet uko nao,” she humorously declared, bringing smiles to the audience.

(His Excellency President, as you may have heard, I am a widow, I am single, I am available. I mean, I don’t have a significant other, Mr. President. You have your friends who are single like me; even in the cabinet, you have them.)

Mother-in-law actor Charity was then welcomed to the stage, where she playfully denied being dictatorial, emphasising that she is a disciplinarian and a born-again Christian.

The comedy session ended with comedian Terence talking about his ‘wash wash ‘legit business’.

The comedian came straight to the Jamhuri celebration occasion after a spectacular show at the premiere of his latest movie, Wash Wash 4 which took place at the Edge Convention Centre in Nairobi.

The premiere was attended by hundreds of fans who came to witness the unveiling of the much-anticipated movie.
