Kashmir Solidarity Day: A call for international recognition and action

essay on kashmir solidarity day

Kashmir Solidarity Day, observed on the 5th of February every year, holds great significance for Pakistan. This national holiday serves as a platform for the country to demonstrate its unwavering support and unity with the people of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. The day is dedicated to paying homage to the brave Kashmiris who have lost their lives in the ongoing struggle for independence.

Kashmir has a rich and complex history that dates back centuries. It has been a region of great cultural and religious diversity, with influences from Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. In the 13th century, Islam became the dominant religion in the valley, and Muslims ruled the region for over five centuries. However, during the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947, Kashmir became a disputed territory between India and Pakistan.

Since then, Kashmir has been a hotbed of conflict, with both India and Pakistan claiming sovereignty over the entire region. The people of Kashmir have been caught in the crossfire, enduring violence, human rights abuses, and a denial of their right to self-determination. The conflict has resulted in the loss of thousands of lives and has left a lasting impact on the region’s socio-political landscape.

Pakistan’s policy towards Kashmir Pakistan has consistently supported the Kashmiri people’s struggle for self-determination and has called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The country has raised the Kashmir issue on various international platforms, highlighting the human rights abuses committed by Indian forces in the region. Pakistan’s stance is based on the principles of justice, international law, and the right of Kashmiris to decide their own future.

The significance of Kashmir Day Kashmir Day holds immense significance for Pakistan as it provides an opportunity to express solidarity with the people of Kashmir and raise awareness about their plight. The day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Kashmiris in their quest for freedom and independence. It is a time for reflection, remembrance, and renewed commitment to supporting the Kashmiri cause.

On Kashmir Day, solidarity rallies are held across Pakistan, where people from all walks of life come together to condemn the Indian occupation of Kashmir and express their unwavering support for the Kashmiri people. Political and religious leaders deliver speeches, highlighting the human rights abuses committed by Indian forces and calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Mosques and other religious institutions organize special prayers and Quran readings for the well-being of the Kashmiri people and regional peace.

International Recognition and Support

The Kashmir issue has garnered international attention, with various countries and organizations recognizing the need for a peaceful settlement and the protection of human rights in the region. In 2021, the New York State Assembly passed a resolution calling on the Governor of New York to recognize February 5th as Kashmir American Day. This resolution aimed to champion human rights, including the freedom of religion, and recognize the contributions of the Kashmiri community in New York.

The Kashmir conflict remains one of the most protracted and unresolved disputes in the world. It is a complex issue with deep-rooted historical, political, and religious dimensions. The international community has a crucial role to play in facilitating a peaceful resolution and ensuring the protection of human rights in the region.

The revocation of Article 370 by the Indian government in 2019 further escalated tensions in Kashmir. This move not only violated the rights of Kashmiris but also undermined the UN resolutions that called for the region’s final disposition to be determined through a plebiscite. The international community must hold India accountable for its actions and push for a peaceful settlement that respects the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Kashmir Day serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for freedom and self-determination in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. It is a day of solidarity and support, where Pakistan stands united with the Kashmiri people in their quest for justice and peace. The international community must join hands in finding a just and lasting solution to the Kashmir conflict, one that respects the rights and aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

In my opinion, Kashmir Day holds immense significance not only for Pakistan but for the international community as well. The Kashmir conflict is not just a territorial dispute; it is a struggle for the fundamental rights and freedoms of the Kashmiri people. The human rights abuses committed in the region cannot be ignored or overlooked.

It is essential for the international community to recognize the gravity of the situation and take concrete steps to address the issue. Diplomatic pressure, dialogue, and mediation efforts should be intensified to facilitate a peaceful resolution that respects the will of the Kashmiri people.

Furthermore, the suffering of the Kashmiri people should not be confined to a single day of solidarity. The international community must continue to raise awareness about the ongoing human rights abuses in Kashmir and advocate for justice and accountability.

Kashmir Day serves as a powerful reminder that the struggle for Kashmiri independence is far from over. It is a day to reaffirm our commitment to supporting the Kashmiri people in their quest for justice and peace. Let us not forget the sacrifices made by the Kashmiris and work towards a future where they can exercise their right to self-determination.

From an analysis perspective, the Kashmir conflict remains a complex issue with no easy solutions. The historical, political, and religious dimensions of the conflict make it challenging to find a peaceful resolution. However, it is essential to continue diplomatic efforts and engage all stakeholders in meaningful dialogue.

The international community has a crucial role to play in facilitating a peaceful settlement. The United Nations, in particular, should take a more proactive approach and ensure the implementation of its resolutions on Kashmir. The human rights abuses committed in the region must be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible should be held accountable. Furthermore, all parties involved in the conflict should prioritize the well-being and aspirations of the Kashmiri people. Their voices should be heard, and their right to self-determination should be respected. Only through a genuine commitment to peace, dialogue, and justice can a lasting solution to the Kashmir conflict be achieved.

Kashmir Solidarity Day: A Day To Remember The Plight Of Kashmiris – OpEd

By Muhammad Haris

Kashmir Solidarity Day, observed on February 5 th every year, is a day dedicated to showing support and solidarity with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu& Kashmir (IIOJK) and to raising awareness about their legitimate struggle for self-determination. It has its roots in the 1990s when the Indian government deployed hundreds of thousands of troops in the region and imposed strict curfews and restrictions on the movement of the local population.

The day has since been observed annually to raise awareness about the human rights abuses faced by the people of Kashmir and to call for the international community to play their due role to resolve the long standing issue. The day is celebrated by individuals, organizations, and governments across the world, including Pakistan and the Kashmiri diaspora. The celebration serves as a reminder of the human rights abuses faced by the people of Kashmir and calls on the international community to take action to address the situation in IIOJK.

For decades, the people of IIOJK have been subjected to human rights abuses, including restrictions on their political, civil, and economic freedoms. The Indian government has deployed hundreds of thousands of troops in the region and imposed strict curfews and restrictions on the movement of the Kashmiri population. In recent years, the situation in IIOJK has worsened, with the Indian government revoking the region’s special status, which has further entrenched the Indian military presence in the region. The revocation of the special status has also led to widespread protests and increased tensions in the region, leading to human rights abuses and restrictions on the political, civil, and economic freedoms of the local population.

The UN has long recognized the right of the people of Kashmir to self-determination, as enshrined in the UN Charter and numerous resolutions. However, the UN has so far failed to take meaningful action to address the situation in Kashmir and ensure the implementation of these resolutions. The UN has failed to exert sufficient pressure on the Indian government to respect the rights of the Kashmiri people and end the human rights abuses being committed by the Indian forces.  This has allowed the Indian government to continue its oppressive policies against the Kashmiri people.

The international community, including the UN, has failed to provide justice and fulfil the promise of the right of self-determination to the people of Kashmir. Despite the international community’s promises and efforts, the situation in Kashmir remains dire, and the people of Kashmir continue to face human rights abuses and restrictions. This raises questions about the failure of the international community, and the UN to provide justice and fulfil the promise of the right of self-determination to the people of Kashmir.

In the past year, the situation in Indian-administered Kashmir has become increasingly alarming, with reports of increased human rights abuses, restrictions on political and civil freedoms, and the continued military presence of Indian security forces. Pakistan has been at the forefront of raising awareness about the ongoing human rights abuses in IIOJK and has called for the international community to take action to hold the Indian government accountable.

The ongoing situation in Kashmir is a clear example of the failure of the international community, particularly the UN, to provide justice and fulfil the promise of the right of self-determination to the people of Kashmir. The international community must take immediate action to address the situation and ensure the rights of the Kashmiri people are respected. The international community must continue to raise awareness about the human rights abuses in the region and pressure the Indian government to respect the rights of the Kashmiri people. The people of Kashmir deserve justice, and the international community must work together to ensure that justice is served.

The continued human rights abuses faced by the Kashmiri people demand the world’s attention and action, and it is the world’s responsibility to work toward a just and peaceful future for the Kashmiri people. The international community must take action to address the ongoing human rights abuses in Indian-administered Kashmir and to hold the Indian government accountable. The UN and other international organizations must pressure the Indian government to respect the rights of the Kashmiri people, including their right to self-determination.

Also, Pakistan must continue to raise awareness about the situation in Kashmir and the human rights abuses being committed by the Indian government. The Pakistani government must also provide support and assistance to the Kashmiri people, including the provision of humanitarian aid and the protection of their human rights. The Pakistani government must also engage in diplomatic efforts to address the situation and work with the international community to ensure the implementation of the right of self-determination for the people of Kashmir

This year’s Kashmir Solidarity Day is a call to action for the international community to address the ongoing human rights abuses in IIOJK and to stand in solidarity with the Kashmiri people. In view of the ongoing human rights violations, it is imperative that the international community, particularly the UN, take concrete steps to hold the Indian government accountable and bring an end to the suffering of the Kashmiri people. Furthermore, Pakistan, as a vocal advocate for the rights of Kashmiris, needs to continue its efforts to bring the issue to the forefront of the international discourse and build a consensus for a just resolution of the conflict. On this day, let us stand in solidarity with the people of Kashmir and work towards securing a better future for them.

Kashmir Solidarity Day has been observed in Pakistan on 5 February every year since 1990.

The occasion is an annual demonstration of Pakistan’s support for the people of the disputed northern territory of Jammu and Kashmir, administered by India since partition in 1947.

It provides a platform for the expression of support for Kashmiri separatists living in one of the most highly-militarised zones in the world and an opportunity to remember those killed in the three wars between India and Pakistan over the region – in 1947, 1965 and 1999 – and during the region’s frequent border skirmishes.

A one-minute silence will be held on Tuesday, a public holiday, at 10am local time in honour of the dead. President Arif Alvi will address the Legislative Assembly in Muzaffrabad while human chains will be formed at the border towns of Kohala, Mangla, Holar and Azad Pattan.

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi visited Srinagar on 3 February under heavy security to inaugurate a string of infrastructure projects and call for unity against terrorism while the separatist Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) called for a general strike in protest at Mr Modi’s presence.

World news in pictures

“A person who, in his pursuit of crushing Kashmiri resistance, ordered killings and the damaging of properties, hurt the Kashmiri economy and ordered other oppressive measures, deserves only a protest from those he has oppressed”, the JRL said in a statement.

Violence most recently erupted in December 2018 when seven civilians were killed and 40 injured when Indian troops pursuing militants ran into marching demonstrators, who were accused of throwing stones at the military to help the rebels escape. Three militants and a soldier were also killed in the clashes and another member of the armed forces wounded.

  • India and Pakistan engage in war of words at UN over Kashmir

It was hoped the election of former cricketer Imran Khan as Pakistan’s prime minister in July last year would herald a new dawn for the Muslim-majority Himalayan region and Mr Khan initially sought to strike a concilliatory note: “If India takes one step towards us, we will take two.”

The eruption of a war of words between ambassadors at the UN just a month later seemed to suggest an unwelcome return to business as usual.

The recent history of the region has been littered with such disappointments. After decades of competing claims, violence, accusations and counter-accusations, relations between India and Pakistan improved substantially during Mr Modi’s first two years in power, boding well for talks on the future of Kashmir.

But this brief period of harmony came to an end in 2016 following a spate of attacks on Indian diplomatic and military assets in response to the killing of Burhan Wani, leader of the Hizbul Mujahideen militant organisation.

Why Kashmir Solidarity Day Matters?

Tahir mahmoud, jumada' al-akhirah 19, 1442 2021-02-01.

essay on kashmir solidarity day

Among oppressed Muslims worldwide, two groups of people have lived the longest under foreign occupation: the Kashmiris and Palestinians. Both are victims of British colonial intrigue that handed their territory to alien occupiers.

Kashmir—or, to use its full name, the State of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K)—went under India’s illegal occupation on October 27, 1947 when Indian troops invaded and occupied the state. Palestine’s fate was sealed when a General Assembly vote in November 1947 handed 56 percent of Palestinian lands to Jewish immigrants to Palestine that constituted 30 percent of the population.

Among many other events, February 5 has been officially observed as Kashmir Solidarity Day in Pakistan since 2004. It is a holiday. Seminars, conferences, rallies and other events are organized to draw attention to India’s illegal occupation of two-thirds of the state (one-third is with Pakistan where the Kashmiris enjoy a considerable measure of autonomy). There is little doubt that Kashmiris do not wish to remain under Indian occupation.

For decades, the Kashmiris have protested against Indian occupation forces, that number almost one million, despite indescribable brutality inflicted on them. It is in this context that the Kashmir Solidarity Day assumes great importance.

Despite many other trouble spots in the world, the Kashmiris’ plight cannot be overlooked. In the spirit of solidarity, seminars (webinars this year) are also organized in other parts of the world including Canada, the US and Europe.

Officially called Yaum-e Yekjehti Kashmir , it was first proposed by the leader of the Jama‘at-e Islami, the late Qazi Hussain Ahmed in 1990. It was then observed in 1991 but became an official event in 2004.

On January 31, 2004, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Kashmir and Northern Area Affairs announced at a news conference that the people and the Government of Pakistan would demonstrate on this day (February 5) their solidarity with the aspirations of the people of Kashmir. It was meant to convey the message to the Kashmiri people as well as the world that Pakistan would continue to support the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination as enshrined in more than 11 Security Council resolutions.

According to the Kashmiri journalist Gowhar Geelani , quoting the Srinagar-based international law expert, Dr Sheikh Showkat Hussain, wrote in February 2017 that Kashmir Day has been observed historically right from 1932. It was first proposed by the then Kashmir Committee.

“In the 1930s, the day was observed to express camaraderie with the Kashmiris’ struggle against the autocratic Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh. In present day context, Kashmir Day is being celebrated to show solidarity with the struggle of Kashmiris against India,” Sheikh Showkat said.

“Basically, it [Kashmir Day] started from undivided Punjab and it has been celebrated ever since, with pauses in between. This day will continue to hold importance until the Kashmiris achieve their objective of right to self-determination.”

The right to self-determination is a fundamental right of every human being. This has been denied the Kashmiri people since 1947. According to the partition plan of British-ruled India, Muslim majority areas were to constitute Pakistan while Hindu majority areas would become part of India. This formula was accepted by the leaders of the two movements—the All-India Muslim League that led the Pakistan movement and Indian National Congress that represented Hindu sentiment. Yet the Indian Congress in connivance with the British violated this agreement in the case of Kashmir.

The people of Jammu and Kashmir who were overwhelmingly Muslim, had no doubt that they would become part of Pakistan. After all, not only the people’s sentiment but even their culture, geography, history and physical links, such as postal service, telegraph etc were all with Pakistan.

When the Kashmiris saw that their ruler Hari Singh was prevaricating in joining Pakistan, they rose up in revolt. He fled the state capital Srinagar and sought India’s military help to quell the people’s uprising. It is said that in return for Indian help, he was asked to sign the Instrument of Accession to India.

There are several problems with this version. First, nobody has seen the Instrument of Accession. Second, the ruler having fled the state capital, and thus lost control of the government, had no authority to sign away the future of the state against the wishes of the people. Third, the Indian rulers repeatedly stated that this was a temporary arrangement and as soon as law and order were restored, the people of Kashmir would be given the right of self-determination.

Being completely duplicitous and compulsive liars, successive Indian rulers have since reneged on this pledge. Neither the Kashmiri people nor Pakistan, however, have forgotten this. Moreover, at least 11 UN Security Council resolutions affirm the Kashmiris’ right of self-determination.

While Pakistan Solidarity Day is observed worldwide, it is imperative that in Pakistan much greater effort is made to instill the importance of the Kashmir issue in the psyche of the people, particularly among students. Kashmir should be taught as a compulsory subject in schools and colleges. Further, its importance for the very survival of Pakistan should be emphasized.

Kashmir should become the living, breathing experience of every Pakistani man, woman and child. Its liberation from the clutches of Indian tyranny should be as important to every Pakistani as the well-being of their own families.

The President, the Prime Minister, and the Foreign Minister, in their special messages on the occasion, renewed Pakistan’s unstinting moral, diplomatic, and political support for the Kashmir Cause.

Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani has addressed letters to the Presidents of the UN Security Council and General Assembly, the UN Secretary-General, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the OIC Secretary-General to update them on the latest developments in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

In these letters, the Foreign Minister has emphasized the need to implement the relevant Security Council resolutions so that the people of Jammu and Kashmir can determine their future through a fair and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices. He has also urged the UN and OIC leadership to play their role in improving the human rights situation in IIOJK and in the release of Kashmiri political prisoners and dissenters.

In the run-up to Kashmir Solidarity Day, a briefing was organized for Islamabad-based diplomats to apprise them of the situation in IIOJK.

A 'Solidarity Day Walk' was held on Constitution Avenue earlier today, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs up to the Parliament Building. The walk was led by the Ministers for Information, Privatization, Culture, and Religious Affairs.

A wide range of other activities, including seminars, webinars, panel discussions, and photo exhibitions, were also organized throughout the country and at Pakistan’s diplomatic missions around the world.

These activities aimed to express solidarity with the Kashmiri people, highlight the ongoing human rights violations in IIOJK, and underscore the grave implications of India’s efforts to turn Kashmiris into a disempowered community in their own land.

Pakistan observes Kashmir Solidarity Day today

Ceremonies, rallies, meetings and processions to be held in cities across the nation

photo radio pakistan

The nation is observing Kashmir Solidarity Day on Sunday with ceremonies, rallies, meetings and processions being held all over Pakistan and in various countries of the world.

A public holiday is being observed in the country with messages of solidarity issued by the president, the prime minister, military and others.

A chain of human hands was formed on the Mangla bridge connecting Pakistan with Azad Kashmir and a minute of silence was observed at 10 am as a siren sounded.

Rallies will also be held in different cities of the country by social and political organisations to highlight the Kashmir issue. Solidarity walks have been organised in Islamabad, Muzaffarabad, Gilgit, and in four provincial capitals.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will address a special session of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in Muzaffarabad today.

In his message, the prime minister said that that the entire nation of Pakistan has united to express unwavering solidarity and support with its Kashmiri brothers and sisters.

"On behalf of the entire Pakistani nation, I want to assure our Kashmiri brothers and sisters that we stand shoulder to shoulder with them. We will continue to lend moral, diplomatic and political support to their just cause, until they attain freedom from Indian oppression,” he said.

The premier said that India is mistaken if it believes it could crush the iron will of the Kashmiri people. "No amount of state terrorism, unleashed by Indian Occupation Forces, can break the will of the Kashmiris or undermine their legitimate struggle," the premier said.

“The Kashmiri people have kept the torch of freedom burning with their sacrifices. I am sure their dreams will be fulfilled soon,” he said.

The prime minister urged India to honour its commitments made to Pakistan, the UN and, above all, to the Kashmiri people.

President Dr Arif Alvi, in a separate message, said that Pakistan has consistently maintained that a lasting solution to the Kashmir dispute was possible only in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and wishes of the Kashmiri people.

"Pakistan also urges the international community and organisations to take practical steps to hold India accountable for its gross and widespread human rights violations in IIOJK," the president said.

"We observe this day to draw the attention of the international community towards the relevant UN Security Council resolutions which state that the final disposition of the Jammu and Kashmir Dispute would be made in accordance with the will of the people, expressed through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite conducted under the auspices of the United Nations," he stressed.

The spokesperson of the Pakistan Armed Forces Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry paid tribute to the Kashmiri struggle on behalf of the Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), services chiefs and forces.

Best emotional Speech on Kashmir day in English

My honor, Kashmiris have done what they could. But the history brings to light the question: O Pakistanis, what have you done for your fellow Kashmiris? They have suffered for a long – just because of their demand for annexation to Pakistani. What have you given in return?

Let's recall today the message of Quaid-e-Azam, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who, while addressing the Kashmiris laid the course of action for all of us. While addressing the Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference on 26 Oct 1946 – he remarkably said:

My message and earnest appeal to Muslim leadership in Kashmir is: Organize your people, educationally, socially, economically and politically and set your hand on constructive nation building programme.

Mr. President, we need to revive our conscience, awake our senses and follow the call to action. This day should not merely be a commemorative day. It should be the day of allegiance. The day of pledging allegiance to the cause. Kashmir will never be sovereign, Mr. President, unless we get to fix the internal cracks in Muslim Ummah. Unless the sectarian fire is extinguished.

Unless our Muslim stakeholders take pain for Kashmiris. Unless the Kashmir dispute is voiced well in the international community. Unless the world comes to know the heinous atrocities of so-called democratic India in Kashmir over seventy years. Unless we are united. Unless we are devoted. Let's make a vow to God, to our conscience, to our blood – for surfacing the Kashmir issue with all zeal and zest.

With the immense hope that one day the sun of independence will dawn upon the beautiful valley. And our fellow Kashmiris will have a peaceful and prosperous life. As Faiz Ahmed Faiz writes:

And we oppressed Beneath our feet will have this earth shiver, shake and beat And heads of rulers will be struck With crackling lightening and thunder roars.

Indian throne will soon be reduced to ashes; Kashmir will be ours! Pakistan Zindabad!

Kashmir Solidarity Day

Kashmir Solidarity Day on (5th February) is commemorated each year with great fervour and enthusiasm in Pakistan and abroad. All Ministries and Divisions at the federal and provincial levels arrange and highlight different kinds of activities to show solidarity with Kashmiris people. The purpose of all these activities is that Pakistan supports the cause of Kashmir’s people intellectually, morally, and diplomatically.

A human chain is made at Kohala bridge in AJK. All local, national and international media are invited for the coverage of all these activities. The nature of cruelty, Human rights violations and genocides committed by India in Indian occupied Kashmir are highlighted in various forms through paintings, speech contests, seminars, peaceful rallies, students rallies, etc. The Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan under Kashmir Council at the federal level arranges and coordinates a comprehensive program for the sensitization of the general public each year.

COAS Asim Munir, Iran President discuss regional peace, border security

In this context, I suggest the AJK Council that Study Tours for the students of higher secondary schools who participate in various activities at the federal and provincial levels at any competitive forum with the reference of Solidarity Day, should be initiated. The AJK Council must arrange study tours for the various Kashmir areas for these selected students who filtered out from various activities like paintings, speech contests, essay competition. Such purposeful study tours activity will not only foster brotherhood, unity and tourism among the general masses at the grassroots level but also provide a picture of the problems, hardships of Kashmiri people living in hilly topography in socio-economics context. Such study tours may be arranged vice versa. The students from AJK may be sent to various parts of the country like Karachi, Balochistan, Thar, Cholistan. The Council should arrange such purposeful activities with the coordination of federal and provincial Education Ministries and Departments.
