Abstract/Executive Summary

With the rising popularity of the Hallyu Wave, numerous Korean trends have been taking over the world, specifically Korean Dramas. This type of media has been the talk of the town, particularly in the Philippines. Ever since the Filipinos' first introduction to K-Dramas in the 1990s, the demand for it has only grown, especially during this pandemic. With its continual movement, it is important to investigate and understand how this phenomenon affects the Filipino people. This study aims to understand the ongoing popularity of Korean Dramas in the Philippines and how it affects and influences various aspects of Filipino lives. This study also intends to identify the components of Korean dramas that make them popular among Filipino audiences and the parallels that can be observed between Filipino and Korean lives based on the said dramas. To answer the research questions and achieve the research objectives, a phenomenological approach was taken to help describe this phenomenon. A total of 12, male and female, self-proclaimed Korean Drama fans ages 18-45 were interviewed via Zoom. To analyze the data, thematic analysis, with reflexivity in mind, was employed to look for recurring themes. Based on the previous literature and interviewees, the unique and non-repetitive plots, talented actors, and quality production have contributed to the popularity of K-Dramas. Furthermore, K-Dramas have influenced their viewers' food preferences, beauty standards, and interest in a foreign country. Lastly, Filipinos have developed a frustration towards their own country due to the better things they see in these K-Dramas.

The Relationship of South Korean Influence (K-pop and K-drama) to the Nationalism of Grade 12 ABM and HUMSS Students in EAC-SHS A Research Proposal

Profile image of Jenica Villanueva

This research paper focused on the relationship of South Korean influence, particularly K-pop and K-drama, to the Nationalism of Grade 12 ABM and HUMSS students in EAC-SHS. It includes the strands in EAC-SHS who have the greatest number of students who are interested to either K-pop, K-drama or both. The researchers of this study found out that there is indeed a relationship between the two involved subject matters (South Korean influence and Nationalism of students) as there are respondents of the study who scored low in the test about Philippine Culture and high in the test part about South Korean Culture. The paper provided a list of the things that Filipinos, specifically the youth, can do to balance their interest towards other countries and patriotism to the Philippines given that there is a tendency of today’s generation to admire other culture which in this study is South Koreans, and appreciate less the Philippine culture in terms of its music and telenovelas.

A Comparative Study on the Effects of Korean Drama Consumption to the Patriotism of University of the East - Caloocan Grade 12 HUMSS Fans and Non-fans

Melo Mar Cabello

This study explored the possible effects of watching Korean TV drama on the patriotism of students. The rise of Hallyu 1.0 or Korean TV drama to popularity in the mid-1990s became possible through the help of media. Three theories were utilized to explain the successful proliferation of K-drama in Asian countries: Cultural Proximity Theory, Media Dependency Theory, and Uses and Gratifications Theory. However, despite the success of Hallyu, anti-Hallyu movements have been formed across Asia, eliciting different explanations from experts, one of which is linked to the concept of patriotism. In order to validate the relationship, the researchers conducted an in-depth interview with five K-drama fans and five non-fans, and compared and contrasted the patriotism of the members of each group in relation to K-drama consumption. In this study, patriotism is defined as the pride one feels for his country. The results showed that participants are both proud of being a Filipino and of the Philippines regardless of K-drama consumption. However, this pride tends to be less manifested in the actions of K-drama fans as opposed to non-fans, because said fans prefer Korean TV drama to Filipino TV drama. K-drama fans patronize K-drama merchandise over Filipino drama merchandise, and finds patronizing the latter embarrassing. Furthermore, K-drama fans compared the Filipino culture to South Korean culture wherein they perceive the latter as superior over the former. Hence, the researchers concluded that watching K-dramas negatively affects the patriotism of students. However, the relationship is deemed to be substantially weak due to: (a) conflicting data, and (b) arbitrary nature of patriotism, since the subjective nature of ―pride‖ warrants its absence of manifestation without constituting to unpatriotic values. Nevertheless, this study is still significant since it will alert concerned authorities on the negative effects of K-dramas on patriotism and will urge them to respond accordingly.

This study aims to find out the impact of watching Korean dramas among the selected Senior High school students of the Marinduque Midwest College and to determine the factors why most of the Filipino youth especially the students are attracted to watch Korean dramas. Specifically it attempts to answer the following questions: what is the socio-demographic profile of the students in terms of age and gender; what are the factors that influence the Filipino teenagers specifically the Senior High School students to watch Korean dramas and what are the impacts of Korean dramas among the Senior High school students of Marinduque Midwest College in terms of Lifestyle and Behaviors. The method utilized in this study was mixed method both qualitative and quantitative research. Respondents of this study were 106 senior high school students and selected using purposive sampling technique. Self-constructed questionnaire-checklist lifted from different sources and adapted by the researcher was utilized to gather necessary data for this study. Data were presented using graphs and tables. Frequency, percentage, ranking and weighted mean were used to analyze and interpret the data gathered. Results showed that the main factors why most of the Senior High school students are attracted to watch Korean dramas were because of the fact that it features good-looking actors/actresses (Cast) and simply the content/stories each Korean dramas depicts. Results further showed that majority of the respondents spent more than 5 hours in watching and sacrifice mostly their sleep. Topping the list of what the students adapt/pick up in watching were the language and Fashion/Style. Considering the foregoing conclusions, the researchers recommend the following: 1) The researchers recommend future researchers to tackle and focus on the content of Korean dramas through using content analysis research; 2) The researchers recommend future researchers to conduct a study on a comparative analysis between Korean teledramas and Filipino Teledramas; 3) The researchers recommend future researchers to tackle and focus on the impact of watching Korean dramas on the academic performance of the students; 4) The Future researchers may conduct further and in-depth studies on the impact of Korean dramas among the Filipino youths; 5) The researchers have recommended that the Senior High school students should practice time-management and use their time wisely when it comes in watching. Keywords: Korean dramas, Impact of watching Korean dramas, Lifestyle and behaviors, Filipino youths and Senior High school students

This study looked into the level of K-pop influence to the third year BSEd students of Leyte Normal University. The researchers used the seven stages of K-pop fandom as indicators of the study. The underlying framework of the study is the Media Dependency theory. A survey (questionnaire) distributed through random sampling to the sample population of 3rd year BSEd students. This questionnaire designed to get a quantitative overview of the frequency about the level of K-pop Influence. The study found out that K-pop has slightly influence in most of the stages of K-pop fandom. This means that K-pop influence is minimal only.

Kritika Kultura

Sarah Domingo Lipura

Korean cultural products (known as Hallyu) are now the dominant incarnation of East Asian culture throughout Southeast Asia and have introduced consumers to Korean industry, cosmetics, and culture. Recent work has concentrated heavily upon this region and the new dynamics Southeast Asian countries can offer to the study of inter-Asian cultural links, particularly during the political amalgamation of the ASEAN economic community. Yet in the more developed Southeast Asian nations of Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines, there is some evidence of a rejection of and animosity towards Hallyu products from consumers who are beginning to question and disapprove of the high number of Korean products in their countries. Through interviews with over 70 consumers dissatisfied with Hallyu across these three nations, this project identifies three main areas under which this potential for a Hallyu " backlash " occurs: perceptions of colonial-esque attitudes and cultural imperialism from Korea; the movement of Hallyu from an innovative new " high culture " to a static and out-of-date " low culture " ; and the increasing availability of new and different international products that threaten to usurp Hallyu. Such evidence represents a potential change in East and Southeast Asian relations, as well as the long term difficulties inherent in using Hallyu as a vehicle to maintain Korean influence.

Anna Quick Plot Recap (Finale Spoilers!)

For the last two episodes of Anna , the story continues with Yoo Mi processing the death of Hyun-Joo. She concludes that she was too strong-willed to have committed suicide. All the while, Ji-hoon had begun being aggressive toward her. He seemingly treats her like how he treats his employees. Weary of the power he might have if he becomes mayor, Yoo Mi decides she must stop him.

Subsequently, Yoo Mi went to all previous employees of Ji-hoon that were unjustly fired. There she managed to get information on him, such as tax fraud and a son from his previous marriage. She also decided that for her plan to work, she must expose herself as a fraud. Despite her best efforts, Ji-Hoon’s campaign team was ready for any issues that might arise.

Shedding Snake Skin

As news broke out, Ji-Hoon confronts Yoo Mi for trying to sabotage him, revealing that he now knew Yoo Mi’s true identity. On top of this, he had to kill Hyun-joo as she threatened his campaign. Desperate to get out of her life, Yoo Mi goes to Ji-Won for help. Knowing Yoo Mi’s real identity, Ji-Won decides to help her expose the truth about Ji-Hoon.

Moreover, as she sets up a meeting with a prosecutor, she is blocked off from their meeting. Unable to escape her life with Ji-Hoon, Yoo Mi was brought to America, where she would stay in a remote location indefinitely. Yoo Mi received a call on the plane about her mother’s passing. Now, Yoo Mi truly had nothing to lose in her life.

Escaping, At Last

On the drive to America, their car began to swerve and crashed into a steel pole. As Yoo Mi escaped the crash with only minor injuries, Ji-hoon was stuck in the car. Upon receiving news that Ji-Won couldn’t meet with the prosecutor, she decides to take matters into her own hands.

With her scarf and lighter, she set the car ablaze, leaving Ji-hoon to die. The story concludes by revealing that, after the accident, Yoo Mi began walking to cross Canada. There, she lived in a snowy secluded region in a small cottage in peace.

Anna Series Highlights

Bae suzy’s acting.

Although the storyline is predictable and bland, Bae Suzy exhibited superb acting skills! Her acting was compelling. The way she transformed as both Yoo Mi and Anna entices viewers to connect with both characters. In fact, it felt natural to watch her deliver her emotions both as Anna and Yoo Mi.

Likewise, she is very effective in triggering the viewers. There were a lot of nerve-wracking scenes, like when she is in trouble or is about to do something illegal. During these sequences, she is very immersed in her character that viewers cannot see a hint or glimpse of her past roles in her other dramas.

She has shown maturity as an actress in this role, drifting away for a bit from her usual “ Nation’s First Love ” image. The way she internalized her character was so effective that viewers would feel a plethora of emotions watching her, including anger, tension, frustration, and sadness.

At the same time, viewers would still fall for her charms. Although this time, she exudes sly and appealing visuals rather than a lovely charisma.

Anna

  Impeccable Production & Design

The series only had six episodes. Nevertheless, they did not underperform in the production design aspect. Just like the strength of most Korean dramas, Anna served good set designs, locations for the scenes and a stunning wardrobe for the casts.

Moreover, the settings of the sequences are befitting to the story’s premise. Additionally, the creative team did well in striking the balance when they brought Yoo Mi’s gloomy life and Anna’s grandiose lifestyle to life.

Anna Series Musings

Magnifying the loopholes.

Unfortunately, in terms of screenplay, there are a lot of concerning matters in the series. Loopholes such as faulty executions of plot twists and illogical sequences are evident. In particular, her college friend Ji-Won saw Yoo Mi’s parents before when they were still in college. However, she seemingly forgot about them and was convinced of the fake parents Yoo Mi hired for her wedding.

Not only that but there was a lot of media present during her wedding as Lee Anna. There are probably a lot of reports and articles published not long after, which is not surprising given that she married a CEO. Not to mention that they got married at the time when the value of her husband’s company skyrocketed on the stock market.

With that in mind, (given that this happened in 2015 when the internet and social media are already prevalent) it is ironic how it took so long for everyone to uncover her identity. Technically it is easy to find out that she is not affiliated with any rich family because there is no old news on television, radio, or newspaper about her existence.

On top of that, it felt as if to close the gap on the loopholes existing in the first four episodes, the last two episodes were hurriedly sandwiched with resolutions. Hence, the ending felt both anti-climactic and cliché.

Redeeming Factors

If you are a fan of series centered on revenge plots, you might surprisingly like this one. That is if you are not too critical while watching it. But suppose you are someone who scrutinizes the nitty-gritty of the storyline. In that case, you might have to focus on the cast’s splendid performances and the good cinematography of other series to appreciate it.

See where Bae Suzy’s web of lies will take her character in the thriller drama, Anna . All 6 episodes are streaming on Coupang Play .

Why is writing essays so hard?

Patterns and boring topics imposed by schools and universities are not very conducive to creativity and human development. Such essays are very difficult to write, because many are not interested in this and do not see the meaning of the text. There are a number of criteria that make it impossible to write essays:

  • Boring and incomprehensible topics. Many topics could be more interesting, but teachers formulate them in a way that makes you want to yawn.
  • Templates. 90% do not know how to make an essay interesting, how to turn this detailed answer to a question into a living story.
  • Fear of not living up to expectations. It seems to many that the essay is stupid and that they simply did not understand the question. There is a fear of getting a bad mark and disappointing the professor, parents and classmates. There is a fear of looking stupid and embarrassing in front of the team.
  • Lack of experience. People don't know what and how to write about. In order to make a good essay, you need to have a perfect understanding of the topic and have the skills of a writer.

That is why the company EssaysWriting provides its services. We remove the responsibility for the result from the clients and do everything to ensure that the scientific work is recognized.

I ordered a paper with a 3-day deadline. They delivered it prior to the agreed time. Offered free alterations and asked if I want them to fix something. However, everything looked perfect to me.
