10 ways to recognize a truly loyal friend, according to psychology.

Ava Sinclair

Friendship is a beautiful thing, but at times, it can be hard to decipher the genuine ones that stand the test of time from those that are merely skin-deep.

We’ve all had friends who’ve let us down, who’ve failed to support us in our time of need.

It’s tough to distinguish fair-weather friends from the truly loyal ones.

How do you recognize a truly loyal friend who has your back when it matters most?

After exploring numerous psychological studies and reflecting on personal experiences, I’ve compiled a list of 10 signs that can help you identify such rare gems in your life.

If these characteristics ring true for someone in your circle, you can confidently say that you’ve found a steadfast ally.

1) They’re there for you in times of crisis

Loyalty is a trait that’s easy to claim but hard to prove.

A true mark of loyalty in a friend is their presence during your darkest hours.

It’s easy to be around during the light-hearted moments filled with laughter and joy, but the real test of friendship lies in the challenging times.

You see, fair-weather friends will be around when everything is rosy but may disappear when the storm hits.

On the other hand, a loyal friend sticks with you through thick and thin , offering support and companionship even when it’s inconvenient for them.

A genuinely loyal friend will not shy away when you’re in crisis, rather they will lend a shoulder to cry on, offer a comforting word, or simply sit with you in silence.

They won’t abandon you to face your troubles alone.

They understand that your pain is their pain, your struggle is their struggle.

This selfless act of companionship is a clear sign of unwavering loyalty .

If you have such a person in your life, cherish them. They are indeed a rare find.

2) They’re honest, even when it’s difficult

We often associate loyalty with unwavering support and agreement.

But psychology suggests that honesty , even when it’s uncomfortable, is a significant sign of loyalty.

A friend who’s willing to tell you the truth, even when it’s hard, is a friend who genuinely cares about your well-being.

They value your growth and personal development more than they value the comfort of avoiding difficult conversations.

I remember a time when I was about to make a major career decision based on emotions rather than logic.

I was on the verge of quitting my job out of frustration without having another one lined up.

But my friend, Jane, intervened. She didn’t just nod along and support my impulsive decision.

Instead, she bravely pointed out the potential consequences I was overlooking.

She told me that while she’ll support whatever decision I make, she believed I needed to take some time and think it through carefully.

It wasn’t easy to hear, but I needed that honesty . Her willingness to risk our friendship to tell me the truth showed me how loyal she truly was.

So, if you have a friend who’s willing to be honest with you, even when it’s difficult, hold onto them.

They’re a rare gem and an example of true loyalty.

3) They respect your boundaries

Loyalty doesn’t mean being inseparable or sharing every aspect of your life with your friend.

In fact, a crucial aspect of a healthy and loyal friendship is respecting each other’s boundaries.

Boundaries are the invisible lines that define your personal comfort zone.

They could be physical, emotional, or even digital. A loyal friend understands these boundaries and respects them.

Respect for personal boundaries is a form of empathy, a key characteristic of strong and enduring friendships.

It shows that your friend values your individuality and respects your personal space .

So, if you have a friend who understands when to give you space and when to be there for you, you might just have a loyal friend in your corner.

4) They celebrate your successes

Loyalty isn’t just about sticking with you through hard times; it’s also about rejoicing in your achievements and successes.

A loyal friend won’t be envious or try to undermine your accomplishments. Instead, they’ll be genuinely happy for you and celebrate with you.

Whether it’s a minor victory like finally nailing a difficult recipe or a major one like landing your dream job, they’ll be genuinely excited for you.

There’s no trace of jealousy or bitterness in their reaction. Instead, they’re elated because they see your success as their own.

They don’t view your achievements as a threat but take pride in your accomplishments.

This kind of selfless joy in another person’s success is a hallmark of true loyalty.

If you have someone who fits this description in your life, treasure them. Their support and love are invaluable.

5) They keep your secrets safe

Trust is a fundamental building block of any loyal relationship.

A truly loyal friend respects this implicitly understood rule: your secrets are safe with them.

Trustworthiness is one of the most valued traits in a friend.

Sharing secrets is a form of vulnerability, and when a friend honors that vulnerability by keeping your secret, it strengthens the bond of loyalty between you.

A loyal friend understands the importance of confidentiality .

They won’t share your deepest secrets with others, not because they fear losing your friendship, but because they respect you and your privacy.

When a loyal friend promises to keep your secrets, they guard them fiercely, understanding the weight of the trust you’ve placed in them.

If you have a friend who has never betrayed your confidence, you have found a loyal companion indeed.

6) They stand up for you

There’s a certain warmth and security that comes with knowing someone has your back. This feeling is a significant sign of a loyal friend .

A loyal friend isn’t just someone who’s there to comfort you when you’re down; they’re also there to defend you when you’re not around.

They stand up for you, even when you’re not there to do it yourself.

It’s easy to stay silent when someone is being spoken about negatively. But a loyal friend values your reputation as much as their own.

They won’t let anyone tarnish your image unjustly, and they’ll be the first to challenge any misconceptions about you.

If you have a friend who defends your honor, even when it’s easier to stay quiet or join the crowd, then this person genuinely cares about your friendship.

This act of bravery and respect is a testament to their loyalty and love for you.

7) They’re your biggest cheerleader

Sometimes life can feel like an uphill battle. During these times, having a loyal friend by your side can make all the difference.

A loyal friend isn’t just there to offer a sympathetic ear, they’re also there to remind you of your strengths and capabilities.

I’ll never forget a time when I was feeling particularly low about my career prospects.

I felt stuck and overwhelmed, questioning whether I had any real talent at all. It was during this time that my friend, Lucy, stepped in.

She reminded me of all the times I had faced challenges and overcome them.

She reminded me of my skills, talents, and how far I’d already come. She believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself.

Her unwavering belief in me gave me the strength to pick myself up and push on.

Her words weren’t just empty platitudes; they were genuine and sincere, coming from a place of love and loyalty.

If you have a friend who’s always there to lift you up and cheer you on, then consider yourself lucky.

These are the kind of friends who show their loyalty through actions, not just words.

8) They accept you as you are

In a world where we constantly feel the need to fit in, a friend who accepts you for who you are is more than just a friend; they’re a safe haven.

A loyal friend will accept you, warts and all.

They won’t try to change you or mold you into their idea of a perfect friend. Instead, they’ll love and accept you for who you are, quirks and all.

Acceptance is a fundamental human need.

When a friend accepts you unconditionally, it creates a bond of trust and loyalty.

They understand that no one is perfect, including themselves.

They embrace your flaws and acknowledge that these imperfections are part of what makes you unique.

This kind of acceptance is a profound demonstration of loyalty. It’s a silent promise that they’re not going anywhere, no matter how messy life gets.

This acceptance shows that they’re in it for the long haul, and they value your friendship deeply.

If you have a friend who loves and accepts your perfectly imperfect self, hold onto them dearly.

Their loyalty is pure and true.

9) They’re not afraid to disagree with you

On the surface, it might seem like a loyal friend would always agree with you, but that’s not necessarily true.

In fact, a truly loyal friend isn’t afraid to tell you when they think you’re wrong.

This doesn’t mean they’re argumentative or confrontational.

Rather, they care enough about you to point out when they believe you’re making a mistake or heading down a harmful path.

They’re able to put aside the fear of offending you or causing a temporary rift in the friendship, because they value your well-being more than just the comfort of agreement.

They’re willing to risk the discomfort of disagreement in order to protect you from potential harm.

Don’t mistake this for disloyalty – it’s actually one of the most profound expressions of true loyalty and love in a friendship.

10) They’re consistent

In a world that’s constantly changing, a truly loyal friend is a beacon of consistency.

Their friendship isn’t contingent on circumstances, moods, or convenience.

Instead, they remain a steady, reliable presence in your life through life’s ups and downs.

They’re the ones who stick by you, no matter what.

Their support isn’t sporadic or unpredictable depending on circumstances.

Rather, you can rely on them to be there for you, offering the same level of camaraderie and understanding that they always have.

Consistency is the most important sign of a loyal friend. It shows that their friendship isn’t conditional or temporary.

They’re there for you because they genuinely care about you and value your relationship.

It’s a reassurance that no matter what changes, their friendship remains the same.

If you have someone like this in your life, you’ve found a truly loyal friend.

Final reflection: The value of loyalty

Loyalty, as an attribute, is often overlooked in the fast-paced, transient nature of today’s world.

Yet, it remains one of the most valuable traits in a friend.

Psychology tells us that loyalty creates a sense of security and trust, forming the basis for enduring relationships.

It’s a bond that holds friendships together through life’s ups and downs and validates our need for human connection.

The Greek philosopher Aristotle once said , “In poverty and other misfortunes of life, true friends are a sure refuge.”

This rings true even today, highlighting the timeless value of loyalty.

Recognizing this trait in your friends not only strengthens your existing friendships but also helps you develop better relationships in the future.

So as you reflect on your friendships, remember that loyalty isn’t shown through grand gestures or empty words.

It’s displayed in the consistent actions, the unwavering support, the respect for boundaries, and the acceptance of you just as you are.

And if you find a friend who embodies these traits, hold onto them tightly.

Because a loyal friend is indeed a treasure to cherish.

The true meaning of friendship is sometimes lost because of encounters with fake friends who have used and exploited us for their own personal benefits. People like this tend to end the friendship once they get what they want or stab their supposed friends in the back just to get what they think is best for them. Friendship is a very good thing that can help meet our need for companionship and other emotional needs.

In the world we live in today, it is extremely difficult to come across good and loyal friends and this daunting task isn’t made any easier by the lie and deceit of a lot of people in this generation. So, when one finds a very good and loyal important, it is like finding gold and one should do everything to keep friends like that.

The pursuit of true friendship Is not limited to humans, we can as well find good friends in animals; for example, it is a popular belief that dogs make the best friends. It is very important to have good friends as they help us in times and situations where we are down and facing difficulties. Our true friends always do their best to save us when we are in danger and also provide us with timely and good advice. True friends are priceless assets in our lives, they share our pains and sorrow, help provide relief to us in terrible situations and do their best to make us happy.

Friends can both be the good or the bad types. Good friends help push us on the right path in life while on the other hand, bad friends don’t care about us but only care about themselves and can lead us into the wrong path; because of this, we have to be absolutely careful when choosing our friends in this life.

Bad friends can ruin our lives completely so we have to be weary of them and do our best to avoid bag friends totally. We need friends in our life that will be there for us at every point in time and will share all of our feeling with us, both the good and bad. We need friends we can talk to anytime we are feeling lonely, friends that will make us laugh and smile anytime we are feeling sad.

Friends are particularly vital amid times of emergency and hardships. On the off chance that you wind up experiencing a hard time, having a friend to help you through can make the change simpler.

Having friends you can depend on can help your confidence. Then again, an absence of friends can make you feel lonely and without help, which makes you powerless for different issues, for example, sadness and drug abuse. Having no less than one individual you can depend on will formulate your confidence.

Choosing Your Friends Wisely:

Not all friends can instill the positivity in your life. There can be negative effects as well. It is very important to choose your friends with utmost wisdom. Picking the right friend is somewhat troublesome task however it is extremely important. In the event that for instance a couple of our dear friends are engaged with negative behaviour patterns, for example, smoking, drinking and taking drugs, at some point or another we will be attracted to their bad habits as well. This is the reason behind why it is appropriate to settle on an appropriate decision with regards to making friends.

Genuine friendship is truly a gift delighted in by a couple. The individuals who have it ought to express gratitude toward God for having genuine pearls in their lives and the individuals who don’t have a couple of good friends ought to always take a stab at better approaches to anchor great friends. No organization is superior to having a friend close by in the midst of need. You will stay cheerful in your one-room flat on the off chance that you are surrounded by your friends; then again, you can’t discover satisfaction even in your estate in the event that you are far away from others.

Types of Friends:

There is variety everywhere, so why not in friends. We can see different types of friends during our journey of life. For instance, your best friend at school is someone with whom you just get along the most. That friend, especially in the case of girls, may just get annoyed even if you talk to another of your friend more than her. Such is the childish nature of such friendships that at times it is difficult for others to identify whether you are best friends or competitors.

Then there is another category of your siblings. No matter how much you deny, but your siblings or your elder brother and sisters are those friends of yours who stay on with you for your entire life. You have a different set of friendship with them as you find yourself fighting with them most of the times. However, in times of need, you shall see that they are first ones standing behind you, supporting you.

There is another category of friends called professional friends. You come across such friends only when you grow up and choose a profession for yourself. These friends are usually from the same organisation and prove to be helpful during your settling years. Some of them tend to stay on with you even when you change companies.

Friendship Examples from History:

History has always taught us a lot. Examples of true friendship are not far behind. We have some famous example from history which makes us realise the true value of friendship. The topmost of them are the Krishna and Sudama friendship. We all must have read or heard as to how after becoming a king when Krishna met Sudama, his childhood friend, he treated him with honour even though Sudama was a poor person. It teaches us the friendship need not be between equals. It has to be between likeminded people. Next example is of Karna and Duryodhana, again from the Mahabharat era.

Despite knowing the fact that the Pandavas were his brothers, Karna went on to fight alongside Duryodhan as he is his best friend and even laid down his life for him. What more example of true friendship can one find? Again from the same era, Krishna and Arjun are also referred to as the best of the friends. Bhagavad Gita is an example of how a true friend can guide you towards positivity in life and make you follow the path of Dharma. Similarly, there are numerous examples from history which teach us the values of true friendship and the need to nourish such for own good.

Whether you accept or deny it, a friend plays an important role in your life. In fact, it is very important to have a friend. However, at the same time, it is extremely important to choose the friends wisely as they are the ones who can build you or destroy you. Nonetheless, a friend’s company is something which one enjoys all through life and friends should be treated as the best treasure a man can have.

Without it, it would be like a broken down home with no one willing to built it back up. No one to care for it, and no one to repair it. How could anyone have a relationship without loyalty, I just don’t see that happening. Loyalty might give them a ride home, saying that it is ‘all right’ when their cars are low on gas and can not make the two trips. For example loyalty to a close friend helps cultivate trust and understanding. What is True Friendship?

Friendship is a relationship universally celebrated, crossing cultural, geographic, and age boundaries. But not all friendships are created equal, and those that stand the test of time, weathering all storms, are what we define as ‘true’ friendships. True friendship is an emotional bond marked by mutual respect, understanding, and a shared sense of camaraderie. It’s a connection that enriches our lives and supports our growth, both personally and emotionally.

So, what distinguishes a true friend from a casual acquaintance? Certain qualities set these friendships apart, fostering bonds that remain unbroken, regardless of the challenges life throws their way. Let’s explore these qualities in more depth .

Genuine Support and Understanding

Being there for each other through thick and thin is a cornerstone of true friendship. Friends celebrate our triumphs, cheer us on when we’re striving for goals, and provide comfort during times of struggle. They are our champions in success and our solace in distress.

Empathy is a defining trait of true friendship. True friends have an innate ability to understand and share the feelings of others. They don’t merely sympathize; they empathize, putting themselves in our shoes and experiencing our emotions along with us. This profound understanding cultivates a bond of trust and mutual respect, making true friendship a sanctuary where we feel valued and heard.

Active listening is another key element. A true friend listens attentively, making an effort to understand our feelings and perspectives rather than merely waiting for their turn to speak. This kind of meaningful communication promotes deeper emotional connection and reinforces the bond of friendship.

Loyalty and Reliability

Loyalty and reliability are integral to the definition of true friendship. A loyal friend stands by our side, regardless of the circumstances, never wavering in their support. Their steadfastness acts as a beacon, providing us with a sense of stability and assurance that we’re not alone, no matter what.

Dependability is a trait synonymous with true friendship. Reliable friends keep their promises, stay true to their word, and are there when we need them the most. This trustworthiness builds a sense of security and trust in the relationship, further strengthening the bond.

Consistency is the glue that holds true friendships together. Friends may not be present physically at all times, but they remain a constant emotional presence, lending a sense of continuity and reliability to the relationship.

Acceptance and Authenticity

True friends accept us as we are, quirks, flaws, and all. They celebrate our strengths and help us navigate our weaknesses without judgement. This unconditional acceptance fosters a safe space where we can be our authentic selves without fear of criticism or rejection.

Being genuine and transparent is a hallmark of true friendship. Authentic friends are sincere, honest, and open, not afraid to show vulnerability or express emotions. Their genuineness resonates with us, fostering deeper connections.

A non-judgmental attitude is key in a true friendship. True friends respect our individuality and our right to make decisions, even when they disagree with them. They offer advice when needed but refrain from imposing their beliefs or values. This freedom to be ourselves without judgement further enhances the bond of true friendship.

True friendships, embodying these qualities, provide an enriching experience that transcends ordinary social interaction. These bonds illuminate our lives, offering a blend of companionship, support, and love that’s hard to find elsewhere. In the face of life’s inevitable changes, true friendships are the unchanging constants, the unbreakable bonds that stand strong amidst the chaos. As we navigate life’s journey, these friendships are our anchors, grounding us and reminding us of who we truly are.

The Power of True Friendship

True friendships carry immense power, influencing not only our daily interactions but also shaping our mental health , personal growth, and overall happiness. The influence of these unbreakable bonds permeates various aspects of our lives, reinforcing our resilience and contributing to a robust sense of well-being. Let’s explore the dynamic power of true friendships and their transformative impact.

Impacts on Mental Health and Well-being

True friendships provide a critical support system, particularly in terms of mental health. Friends act as sounding boards, providing empathy and understanding during times of stress , anxiety, or sadness. This emotional support can significantly alleviate mental health issues, promoting a sense of calm and stability.

Additionally, true friends can help us recognize when professional help may be needed, encouraging us to seek therapy or counseling when we may not recognize it ourselves. Thus, the role of true friendships is paramount in fostering a healthy, balanced mental state.

Nurturing Personal Growth and Development

Personal growth and development is another area where true friendships cast a significant influence. Friends challenge us, push us out of our comfort zones, and inspire us to reach new heights. By celebrating our successes and providing constructive criticism during failures, they foster an environment conducive to personal development.

Furthermore, friends provide diverse perspectives, enabling us to view situations from various angles and broaden our understanding of the world. This exposure to different viewpoints encourages intellectual growth, enhancing our problem-solving skills and ability to empathize with others.

Enhancing Overall Happiness and Resilience

True friendships contribute greatly to our overall happiness . Shared experiences, laughter, and memories create a rich tapestry of joy that enhances our lives. Moreover, the knowledge that we have a reliable support system in our corner boosts our confidence and self-esteem, leading to greater overall happiness.

Resilience, the ability to bounce back from adversity, is another attribute nurtured by true friendships. Friends provide emotional support during tough times, helping us cope with life’s challenges. Their presence fosters resilience, enabling us to navigate difficult situations with increased strength and positivity.

In conclusion, the power of true friendship is profound, significantly impacting our mental health, personal growth, happiness, and resilience. These unbreakable bonds, characterized by mutual respect, understanding, and support, are indeed a life-enhancing blessing, an essence of life worth cherishing.

Nurturing and Maintaining True Friendships

True friendships are akin to a flourishing garden; they require nurturing, maintenance, and a consistent investment of time and effort. These bonds, built on mutual respect and trust, are cultivated through effective communication and a shared commitment to the relationship. Let’s delve into the principles that underpin the nurturing and maintaining of true friendships.

Effective Communication and Open Dialogue

Clear, open communication forms the foundation of true friendships. It involves expressing feelings honestly, listening attentively, and maintaining an open dialogue about shared experiences and individual perspectives. Effective communication fosters understanding, strengthens the bond, and ensures that both parties feel valued and heard.

Cultivating Mutual Trust and Respect

Trust and respect are paramount in true friendships. These bonds thrive on mutual trust, built on sincerity, reliability, and confidentiality. Respect, on the other hand, acknowledges individuality, appreciates differences, and fosters a non-judgmental atmosphere. Cultivating these twin pillars strengthens friendship and enhances its longevity.

Investing Time and Effort in the Relationship

Friendships require an investment of time and effort to sustain and deepen the bond. This might involve regular communication, spending quality time together, and actively participating in each other’s lives. Such investments serve to strengthen the connection and reinforce the mutual commitment to the friendship.

Quality Over Quantity

Understanding the value of true friendships often means focusing on quality over quantity. A few deep, meaningful relationships can be more fulfilling and enriching than numerous superficial acquaintances. This involves cultivating deeper connections based on shared values, mutual understanding, and shared experiences.

Managing expectations is another key aspect of this principle. Recognizing that every friendship is unique and setting realistic expectations about the level of commitment, communication, and mutual support can prevent misunderstandings and foster healthier relationships.

Being a True Friend

The essence of true friendship lies in reciprocity. Being a true friend means reciprocating the support, understanding, and appreciation that we seek in our friends. It involves being present and available, not just in times of crisis, but also in everyday moments.

Supporting friends, celebrating their achievements, and showing appreciation for their presence in our lives can greatly enhance the bond. It sends a clear message of love and respect, strengthening the connection and reinforcing the value we place on the friendship.

In conclusion, nurturing and maintaining true friendships is a dynamic, ongoing process that involves open communication, mutual trust and respect, and a genuine investment of time and effort. The journey, while requiring commitment, is profoundly rewarding, resulting in bonds that enrich our lives and stand the test of time.

Recognizing Toxic Friendships

While true friendships offer enriching experiences and emotional support, it’s crucial to recognize when a friendship becomes toxic and detrimental to our well-being. Identifying red flags early on can help us take the necessary steps to address the situation and, if needed, sever the ties that are causing harm. Let’s discuss how to recognize toxic friendships, their impact on well-being, and when to consider letting go.

Identifying Red Flags

Toxic friendships often involve consistent patterns of negative behavior. Some red flags may include one-sided relationships, where the give-and-take is imbalanced; manipulation or control; incessant criticism or belittlement; betrayal of trust; or lack of respect for personal boundaries. These behaviors can gradually erode the foundation of a friendship and should not be ignored.

The Impact of Toxic Friendships on Well-being

Toxic friendships can significantly impact our mental and emotional well-being. They often breed negativity, causing stress, anxiety, and a decrease in self-esteem. Over time, these friendships can lead to feelings of frustration, sadness, or isolation, impacting our overall happiness and potentially causing long-term damage to our mental health.

Deciding When to Let Go

Letting go of a toxic friendship is a personal decision and often a challenging one. If a friendship consistently drains you, makes you feel bad about yourself, or affects your mental health negatively, it might be time to consider letting go.

It’s important to communicate your feelings first, providing the friend an opportunity to address and rectify the issues. However, if negative patterns persist despite communication and efforts to change, stepping away from the friendship might be the best course of action.

Remember, it’s essential to prioritize your mental and emotional health . While it can be painful to end a friendship, sometimes it’s the healthiest choice to make. Releasing toxic ties can open up space for more positive relationships and experiences, leading to enhanced well-being and personal growth.

In conclusion, recognizing toxic friendships is an integral aspect of nurturing healthy relationships . Being aware of the red flags and the negative impacts on well-being enables us to make informed decisions about when to let go, paving the way for more fulfilling, supportive, and enriching connections.

Celebrating True Friendship

True friendships, the unbreakable bonds that enrich our lives, are indeed worth celebrating. Expressing gratitude, creating shared memories, and marking milestones and achievements are some of the ways we can appreciate and honor these precious relationships. In this part, we’ll explore how to celebrate true friendships and foster deeper connections .

Expressing Gratitude

An important aspect of celebrating true friendship is expressing gratitude. A simple ‘thank you’ can go a long way in acknowledging the love, support, and understanding that true friends offer. It can be a personal note, a heartfelt conversation, or even a token of appreciation. Expressing gratitude not only strengthens the bond but also reinforces the positive elements of the friendship.

Creating Meaningful Memories Together

Shared experiences and memories form the bedrock of true friendships. Whether it’s an adventure-filled trip, a quiet evening of heartfelt conversations, or a shared hobby or passion, these experiences create lasting memories. Investing time in creating these shared moments can greatly enhance the connection, adding depth and richness to the friendship.

Celebrating Milestones and Achievements

Recognizing and celebrating each other’s milestones and achievements is another significant way of honoring true friendships. Whether it’s a career advancement, a personal accomplishment, or even overcoming a challenging phase, celebrating these moments together conveys support, pride, and admiration.

Moreover, it emphasizes the shared journey and mutual growth, enhancing the sense of camaraderie and deepening the bond. Celebrating together also creates joyous memories, adding to the repository of shared experiences that characterize true friendships.

In conclusion, celebrating true friendship is an enriching experience that can significantly deepen the bond. It involves recognizing the value of the relationship, creating shared memories, and rejoicing in each other’s achievements. As we celebrate these unbreakable bonds, we enrich our own lives, fostering connections that offer support, understanding, and shared joy.

The journey through the varied facets of true friendship underlines the beauty and significance these relationships hold in our lives. These unbreakable bonds, formed on the foundations of mutual respect, understanding, and shared experiences, serve as anchors, providing us with support, joy, and a sense of belonging. As we conclude, let’s reflect on the ways to nurture and cherish these special connections that can last a lifetime.

The beauty of true friendship lies in its authenticity. It is a bond that transcends surface-level interactions, delving into a realm of deep understanding, mutual respect, and shared growth. Each true friendship in our life adds a unique flavor, enhancing our life experience with its individual dynamics.

However, like any meaningful relationship, these friendships need nurturing. Open communication, mutual respect, and consistent investment of time and effort are vital to maintaining these relationships. Celebrating shared memories and milestones, expressing gratitude, and being there for each other in times of need are ways to cherish these bonds.

Moreover, it’s essential to recognize when a friendship turns toxic and learn to let go when necessary, prioritizing our mental and emotional well-being. This balance of nurturing healthy relationships and acknowledging unhealthy ones is a crucial aspect of managing our social connections.

In a world that often emphasizes romantic and familial relationships, let’s not forget the profound impact of true friendships. These relationships, often forged by choice rather than obligation or blood ties, offer a unique blend of companionship, understanding, and shared growth. They are indeed unbreakable bonds that can last a lifetime, enriching our existence with their unwavering presence.

As we continue on our individual journeys, let’s carry forward the essence of true friendship, nurturing these relationships that not only offer companionship but also help shape our lives. May we always find joy in these unbreakable bonds and cherish the warmth, support, and understanding they bring into our lives.

Here's why there can't be one without the other.

“Being honest may not get you a lot of friends but It’ll always get you the right ones” — John Lennon

"I can't believe you're taking sides with them"….

The phone went silent.

Really! Did Jessica hang up on me?

That's how my budding friendship with Jessica ended.

Jessica and I had a few lunch dates. We had previously met at a business conference where we were vying for a significant business contract.

She got eliminated from the short-listed prospects. She called me to vent her disappointment and asked why I thought she wasn't selected. I gave her my honest opinion where I felt she went wrong with her proposal.

I then discovered it's never easy to tell a friend the stone-cold truth, especially when it's not the kind of support they expected from you.

My honesty didn't sit well with Jessica.

But, I've had many Jessicas' in my life. They call on me to quell feuds, mend divides and build back broken bridges.

Family and friends know I never take sides.

They can always count on me to be sincere and honest.

What Makes a Good Friend?

Friends make our lives better. They make us laugh, show us new things, and always help us out when we need them. It can be hard to tell if you’re a good friend because everyone has their own definition of what makes a good friend. But there are some qualities that everyone agrees on as being important for making a friend into a good friend – those qualities are patience, honesty, and the willingness to listen. However, some people are not looking for friendship that is full of these qualities – instead, they become friends because of common interests.

Qualities of a Good Friend

Following are a few common qualities of good friends:

Mutual respect – The basis for a good friendship is mutual respect. This means the two friends should have enough respect for each other to share their thoughts and feelings. Good friends should also be able to hear and accept criticism from one another without getting angry or shutting down. Friendships can’t be built on lies or secrets because such a relationship will eventually crumble.

Trust – Friends are a knowledgeable support system that can be relied on. They help you feel supported and loved, and they’re the ones who will always have your back. Friends shouldn’t have to worry about being betrayed or taken advantage of – but unfortunately, this is a reality that many people experience every day.

Honesty – Transparency and honesty are essential for true friendships. When we share our thoughts, feelings and opinions with our friends, we come to know them on a more personal level. This leads to more meaningful relationships as well as communication that is open, honest and constructive.

Loyalty – Loyal friends are important in life because they make you feel valued and understood. Loyal friends will give you advice when you need it, they will be there to celebrate the good times with you, and also make an effort to be there for the bad times. Moreover, loyal friends can offer a different perspective of a situation.

Happiness – Friendships are all about reciprocating the good times that you share with each other. The best friends will be able to laugh at your jokes and tell you about their day. A good friend should know how to make you feel happy and fulfilled. They should be someone who will send you a funny meme or text when you’re feeling down. They should be the first person to call when your car breaks down on the side of the road. They should also know how to have a good time with each other, whether it’s watching TV, playing video games or going out dancing together.

Reliable – A good friend is someone who cares about you and will always be there for you. They listen to your problems and help you find a solution. You can rely on them when you need a shoulder to cry on or just some company. This is especially important as the need for emotional support is growing. There are many people in the world who don’t have friends or family to talk to when they’re feeling down, and don’t have time or money for a therapist. Good friends listen to your problems and help you find a solution.

Qualities Of A Good Essay

How Does One Work Towards Becoming A Good Friend?

We meet people in our lives, some of them are friends, some are acquaintances. Some are just passing by. The most important thing in trying to become a good friend is to be a good listener. Listening is not just about turning on your ears when they speak or telling them what you think they want to hear. Listening is about being attentive and taking everything in – their words, their feelings, their likes, their dislikes. That also means that it’s okay for you to share your own thoughts too but do it with the intention of contributing something meaningful and not just for the sake of your ego or need for attention. Other tips to be a better friend include:

Be supportive – Let your friend know that you are there for him or her. It can be difficult to know how to respond when someone you know is having a hard time – such as having to deal with the death of a loved one. In such cases, the best thing that you can do is be supportive.

Only offer advice when asked – Try not to tell your friend what to do, unless you’ve been asked to. Listen to their thoughts and feelings and offer advice if they ask for it. When you’ve been asked to provide your friend with advice, it’s okay to offer options or advice. However, offering advice without being asked can come across as rude and condescending. Sometimes, it can be difficult to know what advice you should offer without being prompted.

Listen – Listen to your friend, provide them with your time and attention, and be there for them in any way possible. This is the most important thing when it comes to any type of relationship. Listen to who they are, what they have to say and provide them your inputs and suggestions if needed. However, don’t let yourself get wrapped up in your own thoughts or problems because they come first.

Friends are the people who you spend your time with. They are there for you through thick and thin. They can be your confidant, your advisor, or your sidekick. Friends are there to help you get through life’s tough moments and also share the joyous moments with you.

Regardless, friendship is a complicated process. It takes more than just being there for somebody. It’s about being there for the right reasons, at the right time, and in the right way. The best friends are those who are accountable so that they can support their friend through tough times.

11 qualities of a good friend & ways to be an even better one.

Lia Miller, M.A., MPA, MSW

One of the most important and formative types of relationships you will experience in a lifetime is friendship. Friends are people you can share intimacies and experiences with, and you are an important part of each other's lives. They give you a sense of belonging and security knowing you are loved and cherished by the people you most care for.

The beauty of friendship is that you get to choose your friends, unlike with family. But anyone who's ever had a negative experience with someone they thought was a friend can probably attest to the fact that it isn't always easy to spot true friendship. So we spoke with mental health experts Chaute Thompson, LMHC, and Jinnie Cristerna, LCSW, Rh.D., CHt, about what exactly makes someone a good friend and some tips on how to be a good friend yourself.

What makes a good friend?

Of all the traits a good friend could have, honesty is certainly among the most important. An honest friend is someone who can and will tell you the truth instead of lying to you to keep you happy or placate you. A good friend will tell you the truth even if it's hard, Cristerna says, because they love you.

Being nonjudgmental

A nonjudgmental friend makes you feel confident in and loved for who you are and not someone who instills self-doubt or insecurity in you. Nonjudgmental friends listen to you and do their best to see things from your point of view.

True friends accept you even when your lives move in different directions. True friends understand that your choices are yours and accept those decisions because they know that what's right for them isn't necessarily right for you.

Trustworthiness

Trust lets us feel safe with friends—safe to be vulnerable and to share our plans, our true selves, and our lives. A trustworthy friend keeps your secrets, keeps their promises, and is dependable.

Low-maintenance

Many longtime friends point to the fact that when they haven't been in touch for a while and finally reconnect, it is as if no time has passed. In other words, friends shouldn't require all of your attention all of the time and understand when life gets busy.

Tips for how to be a good friend:

Prioritize making time for each other..

Free time is sacred because we don't have much of it. At the same time, friendships grow through shared experiences and quality time together. The mark of a good friend is someone who makes time for you and makes spending time with you a priority. A good friend will also look for opportunities to maximize the time you have together by seeking fun and unique experiences that strengthen and maintain your bond.

Open up and allow each other to be vulnerable.

A good friend is someone genuine, someone with whom you can be yourself and they can be themselves around you, Cristerna explains. A good friend allows you to be vulnerable with them and vice versa, meaning you can expose your emotions and circumstances with each other and trust one another to listen, be supportive, and have each other's best interests at heart.

"Being able to have fun and share special memories are the result of having a trusting relationship that feels safe," Cristerna adds. "For example, all of my friends and I have an understanding that we support one another in every way (yes, even ridiculous ways!), unless the level of ridiculousness is too much or would create a situation where we feel uncomfortable."

Pay attention to the little things.

"A good friend is able to read between the lines of what's being said because they pay attention, and they know your heart," Thompson says. "For example, if I ask, 'How are you doing?' to a close friend and the response is 'OK,' I know immediately that she is not OK. A good friend pays attention to the details because you care to take the time to understand the heart of your friend."

Be willing to challenge each other.

A good friend pushes you to grow, will let you know when you are on the wrong path, and will "challenge you when you need to be challenged," says Thompson. And this is "all done in love and with respect." In this way, you can grow together and support each other along the way.

"In a personal story, I was angry with someone, and one of my good friends stopped me midway through my rant and said, 'Jinnie, you know you're wrong. I am always with you, but on this one, I can't ride with ya. Stop and think about the role you played in this.' That moment stays with me to this day because she loved me enough to tell me to knock it off, and it came from a place of love. I was able to receive it because of that," Cristerna explains. "That's what friends do."

But be open-minded.

To be a good friend, you have to be open-minded, says Thompson. Being open-minded allows your friend to be their true selves, especially when they are making decisions. By remaining open-minded and not inserting your own biases into your friend's decision-making, you demonstrate that you are understanding and supportive.

"Good friends support us, give us space to be ourselves and make mistakes, and they respect boundaries," Cristerna adds.

Look out for them.

"A good friend is a courageous friend who will stand up and do the right thing when no one is looking and even if it doesn't benefit them. This may not be the type of definition most people have about courage, but trust me—it takes a lot of courage to do this," Cristerna says.

For example, you might find yourself in situations where other people aren't treating your friend well or where you know your friend may be put in a sticky situation. As much as possible, a good friend is willing to stick their neck out on behalf of their friends, whether that means shutting down gossip about them, making sure they get home safe after a night out, or something else.

What about bad friends?

Here are some signs of an unhealthy friendship, according to Thompson:

  • You feel drained whenever you talk to them.
  • The friendship is one-sided, meaning every time you talk to them or try to share with them, somehow the conversation turns around and goes back to them.
  • They aren't making time to listen to you or allow space for your contributions to the conversation.
  • Your time or boundaries are not being respected.
  • They don't respect your feelings.
  • You often feel belittled by them.
  • You feel overly reliant on each other, a hallmark of codependent friendship .

Friendship entails reciprocity and respect, Cristerna adds. Without these two qualities, the relationship will be limited and fizzle over time. When you are in what feels like a toxic friendship or codependent friendship, it is best to determine what is the healthiest way for you to end the friendship .

In communicating the need to end the friendship, you want to ensure that you own the decision and be clear about how the relationship does and doesn't work for you. This is not the time to blame, however—in fact, this is a time to forgive and ask for forgiveness with grace and ease. Ending a friendship is already hard enough. Cristerna recommends trying to be compassionate, so if you cross paths again (and you usually do), you can say hello and catch up in a comfortable and natural way.

The bottom line.

A true friendship is defined by knowing someone has your back, no matter what. A good friend will watch out for you and ensure you are safe, feel supported, and are loved. A good friend will never purposely lead you into making decisions or taking actions that aren't good for you. A true friend will always have your best interests at heart.

Essay on Friendship

There's an old saying, " A warrior's heroism is tested during wartime and friendship of a friend is tested during tough times ".

The heads of every family, when they tell bedtime stories to their grandchildren, bring references of the friendship of Radha and Krishna or maybe of Krishna and Sudama and make the little children of the household believe that friendship is the purest and truest form of all relationships. They try to make them understand that one should always be a friend like Krishna- always by another friend's side when they are in trouble.

Significance of Friendship Essay- Long Format

From the highest power of the country or this world to the lowest bums of the society, living in the streets, each and every human being depends upon friendship. Difference in castes, creed, religions, position, sex and age does not matter when it comes to friendship. As friendship is the only feeling that comes naturally. In this long life, it is very difficult to survive alone therefore, as Mark Twain said, "Grief can take care of itself, but to get the full value of joy you must have somebody to divide it with." Yes, every individual in this world needs a friend in his or her life, who will be there for them at every point of time, with whom it is easy to talk to, share feelings with and laugh their hearts out.

Strengthening Our Friendships

Sometimes, some friendships bear damages, due to economic disparity and other forms of differentiation. However, that does not mean that friendship can happen only between uniform status and like-minded people.

It begins with a simple "Hi!", wherever one is, maybe in the neighborhood, school, college, university or office. Then the relationship grows and deepens with true and sincere affection, care, love and respect towards each other. Whether it is friendship between siblings, spouses, parent-child or teacher-student, all relations will not last long, if there is no freedom to share each other's opinions, or honesty in it.

Sometimes, friendship gets affected because of ego and misunderstandings . However, it is the duty and responsibility of each and every friend, to try to strike a balance in friendship by trusting each other unconditionally and by trying to understand each other's problems and feelings and motivate and support each other, by forgetting all that had happened in the past, thereby strengthening the friendship.

Good and Bad friends

Friends can be both good and bad. However, it depends upon the individual, whom to choose. Good friends will always show the right direction, while friends who are not that good, will only care about themselves, and will have the tendency to misguide the other, thereby ruining their lives completely. In this world of pseudoism, coming across trustworthy, good and loyal friends is a daunting task. So, when one finds a true friend it is next to finding gold. Moreover, one should do everything to keep such a friend.

Short Essay on Friendship

There is an old proverb that states: "I n times of battle, a warrior's valour is tested, and a friend's friendship is tested in tough times. " Every family's head brings up the bond between Radha and Krishna and Krishna and Sudama when they read bedtime stories to their grandchildren. They make an effort to explain to children the importance of good friends, just like Krishna.

Every person in the world needs a buddy in their life—someone who will be there for them at all times. When it comes to friendship, differences in caste, creed, religion, status, sex, and age don't matter.

No relationship, whether it be a friendship between brothers, spouses, parents and children, or teachers and students, will endure if there is no honesty or freedom to express one another's thoughts.

Ego and misconceptions can occasionally hurt friendships . Each and every friend has a duty and responsibility to work to maintain a healthy balance in their friendship. Good friends will always point you in the correct direction, whereas bad friends just care about themselves and have a propensity to lead you astray. Finding a true buddy is like striking gold, in my opinion.

Thus, friendship is one of the greatest bonds and one of the most beautiful gifts one can ever ask for.  It is one which stays with a person forever. Fortunate are those who get friends they can trust, easily.

FAQs on Friendship Essay

1. Why do people tell stories of Radha and Krishna or Krishna and Sudama in every household?

When telling their grandchildren bedtime stories, the heads of every family bring up references to Radha and Krishna's and possibly Krishna and Sudama's friendship in order to instill in the young members of the family the notion that friendship is the most authentic and sincere of all relationships. They make an effort to convince them that a friend should always stand by another friend in times of need, just like Krishna did.

2. How can one strengthen their friendship when there are misunderstandings?

Ego and misunderstandings can occasionally hurt friendships. However, it is the duty and responsibility of each and every friend to attempt to maintain a balance in friendship by trusting one another without reservation, attempting to understand one another's issues and feelings, and encouraging and supporting one another while putting the past behind them. This will strengthen the friendship.

3. What are the differences between good and bad friends?

There are both good and bad friends. However, the decision of who to choose is up to the person. Good friends will always point you in the correct direction, whereas bad friends only care about themselves and have a propensity to lead you astray, wrecking your life altogether.

  • A true friend cares for their friends, accepts them unconditionally, tolerates their shortcomings, and encourages them even in the face of hopelessness.
  • A loyal friend makes one to be who they are without fearing victimization or judgment.
  • A good friend can know one more than one knows themselves.
  • A friend can tell one without fear what one does not want to tell oneself.

Paragraph 2:

Friendship is like a partnership since it brings two people together on equal terms that are binding to both of them.

  • Friends give their all and love each other unconditionally and do even more so as to sustain it.
  • The ugly, the bad, and the good should be endured in friendship.
  • A good friend brings out the best in someone.
  • A person in friendship expects their initiatives to be attended to even when they are down with illness.

Paragraph 3:

Friendship can be compared to family and can even do more than a family could do for a person.

  • Sometimes, the friends one has are the family they wish they had or the family they find easier to deal with as compared to their blood family.
  • One’s blood family may ignore, ridicule, judge, or even misunderstand them.
  • One may get from their friends that which they do not get from their family.
  • A true family is not linked by the bond of blood but the bond of joy and respect in each other’s life.

Paragraph 4:

“A friend in need is a friend in deed” is an old cliché that speaks about true friendship.

  • It essentially means that a true friend will always help in times of need.
  • I fully understood the meaning of this saying when a classmate friend of mine once handed in my takeaway assignment in my absence.

Friendship brings people together to form a greater and stronger whole than its individual parts. Friends act and react in ways that show that they love and care for each other.

Importance of Friendship Essay Example

Almost every human being has friends or at least a friend with whom they spend time together. Friendship is about knowing someone better than others do and counting on them whenever the need arises. A friend is like a gift that one gives oneself. It is doubtless that out of friendship, one lives the fullness of life. Some of the qualities that are expected from friendship include trust, honesty, and authenticity. These are qualities that are majorly concerned with remaining true to a friend and providing them a shoulder to lean on all the time. Friendship brings people together in a bond that helps them realize and experience a meaningful life. Gudwriter offers two paragraph essay examples from any topic.

A good friend is always available irrespective of the circumstances. A true friend cares for their friends, accepts them unconditionally, tolerates their shortcomings, and encourages them even in the face of hopelessness. Even at that moment when everyone decides to walk away from a person for whatever reason(s), their true friend would walk in and be with them and support them. With a loyal friend, one can be who they are without fearing victimization or judgment because they know the friend fully understands them. A good friend can as a matter of fact know one more than one knows themselves. In addition, a friend can tell one without fear what one does not want to tell oneself. If one is on a wrong path, the friend would tell them as soon as they notice it.

Additionally, friendship is like a partnership since it brings two people together on equal terms that are binding to both of them. They give their all and love each other unconditionally and do even more so as to sustain it. In a friendship, there should be expected to be the ugly, the bad, and the good, all of which should be endured. A good friend brings out the best in someone by encouraging them and prevailing upon them to make the best out of their abilities and strengths. Just like in a business partnership, a person in friendship would expect their initiatives to be attended to even when they are down with illness. This is why it could be true to say that life is partly what one makes it and partly what the friends they choose make it.

Friendship can also be compared to family and can even do more than a family could do for a person. Sometimes, the friends one has are the family they wish they had or the family they find easier to deal with as compared to their blood family. One’s blood family may ignore, ridicule, judge, or even misunderstand them. In such a case, they would get from their friends that which they do not get from their family. However, in the best case scenario, friendship can also develop between or among family members. Normally, a true family is not linked by the bond of blood but the bond of joy and respect in each other’s life. One should consider a good friend of theirs as their greatest relation because just one loyal friend is more than a thousand relatives.

“ A friend in need is a friend in deed ” is an old cliché that speaks about true friendship. It essentially means that a true friend will always help in times of need. I never really gave much weight to this saying until I once had to rely on a friend and classmate for an important favor. I had missed school due to an unavoidable circumstance on a day everyone in the class was to hand in their final takeaway assignment in print format. I tried calling people I had thought were my friends among my classmates but none was willing to help. When I was just about to give up, Jasmine, a classmate who was not so close a friend, called and asked me to email her my assignment. I later learnt she downloaded the assignment, printed it, and handed it in together with hers. From then, I am careful about people I treat as friends.

Friendship brings people together to form a greater and stronger whole than its individual parts. Friends act and react in ways that show that they not only love each other but care for them too. It is akin to striking a partnership in which one partner is always there for the other partner in his or her absence. Friends broaden each other’s horizon by opening new doors for each other. They seek to soar beyond limits as a single determined force. Indeed, friendship guarantees one a meaningful and fulfilling life.

What are the qualities of a good friend?

How to spot a bad friend: 3 tips.

The importance of good friends

How to find good friends: 3 tips

The tough part of friendship, finding fulfillment through friendship.

You’ve probably had a lot of amazing — and not so amazing — friends over the years. Knowing what made the great ones stand out from the rest can help you choose the right friends going forward.

Quality friendships make life more meaningful and are good for your health . Great friends offer emotional support and make you feel loved and connected . These experiences are critical to your mental health and social wellbeing , which is why it’s so important to choose your friends wisely and treat them well.

But sometimes finding, or even being, a good friend is tough. And for many, making friends as an adult already feels harder. Gone are the days where you could simply approach someone and ask, “Want to be my friend?”

Life is busy, filled with distractions and obligations. But in these moments, knowing the qualities of a good friend is even more important. You need a supportive friend the most when work is stressful and personal problems are weighing you down.

Whether you have too many best friends to count or are still looking for one more, knowing the qualities and characteristics of a good friend can help you appreciate your current relationships and make new, meaningful connections .

Not every person you meet will become your new closest friend. And approaching meeting new people with an eye toward making a best friend might even cause stress and possibly make people uncomfortable. A network of loose social connections is valuable to both your well-being and success, too. These friendly connections are what form a community .

Many people in your life will move along the spectrum between acquaintance and best friend. These different relationships are all important. Understanding where someone fits on and differentiating what you expect from the relationship is helpful.

But anyone you call a friend should live up to certain standards if you’re going to invest in the relationship. And you ought to, as well, if you want to retain meaningful and mutually enjoyed connections.

From casual acquaintances to personal cheerleaders, here are 11 important qualities of a good friend.

1. They live with integrity

A friend with integrity acts in alignment with their values and commitments. They have strong moral principles and will speak or act when someone violates these principles. They’re also self-aware and behave and speak in consistent ways. Because of this, you can rely on what they say they’ll do.

2. You can trust them

A good close friend is honest and speaks from the heart with good intentions. They tell you what you need to hear in a respectful and loving manner, so it doesn’t feel hurtful. Because you know they have your best intentions at heart, you can be vulnerable , insecure, and weird with them.

3. “Dependability” is their middle name

There’s no time for fair-weather and flaky friends. A good friend respects this, trying their best to show up, keep promises, and do what they say they’ll do.

That doesn't mean they’ll be dependable in every situation. This friend might always be a little late, but you know you can depend on them to offer a listening ear when you’re going through a hard time.

4. They’re loyal

While blind loyalty is never great, since it might cause you to overlook red flags and toxic traits , great friends are generally loyal to their people — unless these people aren’t great friends back.

A loyal friend sticks by you through your highs and lows, offering a helping hand or a listening ear whenever they can. They listen to your side of the story, give you the benefit of the doubt, and defend you when you deserve it.

5. They have empathy for others

Empathy involves understanding others’ emotions and experiences, and a great friend easily does this for you. If you’re distraught because you didn’t get a promotion , this friend does their best to put themselves in your shoes so they can offer you more thoughtful and meaningful support.

And if they know you really well, they might intuit your feelings before you express them, providing comfort and guidance before you even expected it.

Friends-on-Vacation-qualities-of-a-good-friend

6. They’re good listeners

Excellent listening skills are one of the most important qualities of a good friend. Great listening allows your friend to understand how you are feeling, retain important information about you (like your favorite food or activity), and validate your emotions. They can only truly know who you are and offer excellent advice if they're actively listening .

7. Their confidence is contagious

A great friend has enough confidence for the both of you, making you shine in social situations and offering you courage when you don't have it. They’re self-confident and think you should be, too, since they think you’re the best.

8. Spending time with them makes you feel good

Perhaps the most crucial trait, you should feel great spending time with this person. Social vampires and toxic relationships might exhaust you, but spending time with an excellent friend is something that should cheer you up and energize you. This is someone you’re comfortable seeing even on your most burned out days because it’s not work.

9. They make you laugh

Laughter is life’s medicine, and great friends dole it out in tonnes. Humor reduces stress, brightens your mood, and leads to a greater sense of belonging — all things a great relationship should do. So if your friend makes you laugh, know that this seemingly small trait might actually be increasing your well-being.

10. They're non-judgmental

While they might offer “real talk,” bringing you down to earth with critical insights, real friends never make you feel bad about yourself. They offer a safe space for you to work out issues, share insecurities, and discuss hard topics.

Great friends have your best intentions at heart, no matter what, and simply want you to be happy. And they also understand that your road to happiness is unique to you, so they’re ready to support you as you change throughout your life.

11. They’re low-maintenance

Great friends don’t want to be a burden. While they’ll expect some quality time, care, and consideration from you, they’re low-maintenance and won’t hold your busy-ness against you. And when you reconnect, it’s like no time has passed.

These are excellent friends to be around since they’re also low-drama, avoiding gossip and making hang-outs lighthearted and fun.

Intuitively, you’ll likely know you’ve spotted a bad friend because you don’t want to spend time with them. They tire you out, make you feel judged, and don’t align with your interests and values. In many circumstances, your bad friend won’t be someone else’s. You might want to befriend someone that’s more reliable and available than the next person, or maybe what’s most important to you is interest alignment, like if you both work in the same industry.

You can determine what you require in a friend — and what the sure-fire deal breakers are — by brainstorming and writing down your friendship goals . That said, here are some bad-friend traits extending to all situations:

They constantly “one-up” you: These friends always make their issues seem more significant than yours. If you tell them about your bad day, they tell you how their day was worse. And if you’re proud of an accomplishment , they mention how they did it better and sooner. This constant competition invalidates your feelings, and good friends don’t do that.

They’re a bad influence: They encourage you to participate in risky behavior or activities that make you uncomfortable. And if they don’t respect your boundaries , they’re not worth having in your life.

They bully and belittle you: Some “friends” only keep you around to make you feel bad. To feel better about themselves, they take you down — and that’s simply not friendship, it’s bullying . Instead, great friends raise you up, offering support and affirmation to help you become your best self .

The importance of good friendship

When you have good friends , hard times seem more manageable, and you feel supported and celebrated for who you are. And when times are tough, you know you have someone to count on. No matter the distance or situation, they always seem to know how to make you feel better.

A good friend doesn’t need to share your every interest, but they value what’s important to you and never belittle your passions and hobbies. And when you’re doubtful about your value, they quickly remind you of your importance and what makes you unique.

Having great friendships also means you :

  • Gain a sense of belonging
  • Feel less socially isolated and lonely
  • Have support during tough challenges, like losing a loved one
  • Prevents health problems like high blood pressure and heart disease

ceramic-masters-have-fun-at-their-desk-qualities-of-a-good-friend

Making new friends as an adult is difficult. Between work and other obligations, it’s hard to put yourself out there, but it’s worth it.

Here are three tips for finding more healthy friendships.

1. Try different communal activities

If you’re doing an activity you enjoy, chances are high you’ll meet like-minded people. And studies show that most people seek friends who are similar to them , so you could try attending group activities with strangers to make new friends .

So many activities exist that’ll expose you to new people, like dance classes, language courses, and exercise groups. Even if you’re shy , you could try less social events like painting or sculpting classes. And if you’re intimidated by trying something new, join an activity you’re already good at to remove this barrier.

Here are some options for meeting new people with similar interests:

  • Attend local events: Having local friends makes it easier to hang out and stay in touch, plus you might have more in common. You can find local networking and social events online or on community boards, or even ask around at your workplace or with current friends.
  • Volunteer: Helping out a cause you feel passionate about ensures you’ll meet new people with concurrent values. You might help out in a soup kitchen or with a beach clean-up, trying your best to chat to strangers each time you attend.
  • Find a new social hobby: A great way to meet people is by taking on an out-of-home social hobby, like joining a sports team or book club. You might just go to the same spin studio weekly, building community that way.

Group-of-women-in-fitness-class-qualities-of-a-good-friend

2. Become your own best friend

If you’re a great friend to others, that means you can also be a great friend to yourself. And considering yourself “a friend” means you might treat yourself more kindly and compassionately, like you would your other close connections.

This self-love also boosts your self-esteem and confidence and helps you practice how to treat people well. And these traits won’t go unnoticed by current and future friends.

Take yourself out on a dinner date every once in a while, give yourself a positive pep talk, and enjoy cozy nights doing free time activities you love. Because you deserve it.

3. Be a good friend to others

Great friendship is based on reciprocity: to find good friends, you must be a good friend. Self-reflect, perhaps journaling or talking aloud, to determine whether you embody the traits listed above, like being a good listener and offering your friends a no-judgment safe zone. Then make a self-improvement plan practicing any missing qualities.

True friendship isn’t always sunshine and roses. You might fight, fall out of touch, and feel jealous of each other — all of which can strain an otherwise great relationship.

watching-a-movie-at-home-qualities-of-a-good-friend

And sometimes, your friend’s decisions won’t make you happy. You might have to confront them about a bad work ethic or toxic trait. These conversations aren’t easy, but they’re necessary if you want to be a good friend. If you communicate openly and honestly, your relationship can survive any rough patch.

Building meaningful relationships takes work. You must be vulnerable with others, honest about how you feel, and supportive when people need you. And you have to trust your gut when you feel like someone’s a negative influence in your life.

But the struggle is worth it. Now that you know the qualities of a good friend, you can find people to support you during tough times and help you feel more fulfilled in life. Great friends offer belonging and meaning — what’s more important than that?
