• Neurosurgery : Neurosurgery is a highly specialized field dealing with surgical treatment of the brain, spine or nervous system. We have some of the most experienced neurosurgeons in Kansas. Our neurosurgeons are fellowship-trained and board-certified, and many are specially trained in minimally invasive procedures with much smaller incisions and faster recovery times than conventional surgery.
• Neurology : Focusing on diagnosing and treating disorders of the brain, nerves, and spinal cord, our neurologists use advanced technology and extensive experience to pinpoint problems and find the best treatment or management options.
• Neuroimaging : Specialists with advanced training use techniques and technology to create images of the brain's structure, activity or other nervous system parts. Examples are magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT), electroencephalogram (EEG), electromyography (EMG), electronystagmography (ENG), evoked potentials and intraoperative EEG monitoring.
• Neuroradiology : This subspecialty of radiology focuses on diagnosing disorders of the brain, spine and nerves using advanced imaging techniques.
• Neurointerventional procedures : Neurointerventional procedures also called endovascular surgical neuroradiology, use advanced imaging and guidance techniques to navigate catheters and other devices through veins and arteries. There is always a physician on call 24 hours a day to assist in emergent care of our patients.

Prescriptions

We take care of prescription refills only during office hours. Please call your pharmacy to ask for a refill, and the pharmacy will then contact us.  Controlled substance prescriptions require a written prescription; please contact the office directly for these refill requests.

New Patients

We generally see new patients on referral by their primary care physician or another specialist.

Our office is in the Research Tower Building located directly behind the Research Medical Center on the north side of the hospital. Access the parking lot from Prospect Ave. Follow the signs for 2330 East Meyer. We are the building with the silver metal overhang above the entry. Valet parking is available at the main entrance to our building.

Our office is located in an office complex near the intersection of I-29 and NW 72 nd St. Take NW 72 nd Street from I-29 past the Sinclair gas station. The entrance to our parking lot is the first right after the Sinclair station, before you reach N Cosby Ave. Our one-story building is visible upon entering the parking area at the top of the hill.

Our  History

Midwest Neurosurgery associates was founded in 1967.

Since then, Midwest Neurosurgery associates has steadily grown from a two person general neurosurgery practice to an eight member group with expertise and training in multiple sub-specialty areas.

BUILDING OUR PRACTICE

Arnold Schoolman, MD, PhD, recruited Andrew Kaufman, MD, to join him in August 1972.

Robert Morantz, MD, Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center, left KU to join the group in 1980.

Jonathan D. Chilton, MD FAANS – EMERITUS, joined the practice in 1988, and is currently the senior partner of Midwest Neurosurgery Associates.

Geoffrey Blatt, MD joined the practice in 1992.

William Rosenberg, MD, joined the practice in 2002.

Peter Basta, MD, joined the practice in 2007.

Jayson Neil, MD, joined the practice in 2015.

Samuel Taylon, MD, FAANS, joined the practice in 2017.

Frances Hardaway, MD, FAANS, joined the practice in 2018.

Matthew Pierson, MD, joined the practice in 2020.

Geoffrey Blatt, MD retired from the practice in 2021.

PRESENT DAY

Throughout our long history, the physicians of Midwest Neurosurgery Associates have provided outstanding care to our hometown population, and to people from out-state Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, and Arkansas, as well as states outside the Midwest. In addition, we have seen visitors from international locations who have made their way to Kansas City for treatment.

We now have eight neurosurgeons and are still growing, making us the  largest private neurosurgery clinic  in our region.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the UMKC Department of Neurology!

Our department’s main objectives are to advance clinical, educational, and research activities in neurology at the UMKC School of Medicine.  We are grateful for our clinical partners: University Health, Saint Luke’s Hospital, and Childrens Mercy Hospital, where our faculty provide their expert clinical services across the lifespan.  These clinical partners provide our members with a broad range of environments in which to thrive.

The UMKC Neurology Residency program is a core feature of our department.  Our graduates are prepared to practice neurology in any setting.  They have gone on to esteemed fellowship programs and faculty positions across the country.  Our residents and faculty alike actively participate in a multitude of research activities through UMKC and our clinical partners.  These activities help us to stay at the vanguard of neurological care.

He joined the faculty in 2021 after a successful stint as Neuroscience ICU Medical Director and a staff neurologist and neurointensivist at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Dr. Carpenter earned his medical degree from Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences. He completed a medical internship and his neurology residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center then finished a neurocritical care fellowship at Rush University Medical Center. He also holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Central College. Dr. Carpenter has been a presenter at meetings and conferences for national organizations such as the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and the Neurocritical Care Society (NCS). He is a member of the AAN, NCS and Society of Critical Care Medicine.
