The hiring manager will start forming an opinion about you as they lay their eyes on your header. So, you don't want their first impression of you to be negative.

Use a professional email address that doesn't look like a randomly generated gaming alias. Instead of "rya201.ny", use a different username format such as "[email protected]."

If "first.last" is already taken, you may try out different variations until you find one that's available.

For example:

Be sure to add a link to your Linkedin profile or a portfolio depending on your job and required skills.

  • A graphic designer may feature a link to their portfolio on Behance, Dribble, Squarespace, etc.

Employers are finding new ways in which to create productive teams that are distributed around the country — or even around the world.

One of the most frequently asked questions I get is about how to create a resume that caters to work-from-home jobs . There are a lot of unique situations behind this question. But, first and foremost, the application process for remote work is simply different than that for traditional employment. You are likely never going to meet your employer or interviewer face-to-face. First impressions count. Your first impression is just an email or fill-in-the-blank boxes before hitting a submit button. How do you stand out with that?

Today, I’ve put together a big list of resume tips to help you better construct a compelling resume, feel more confident doing so, and, hopefully, get yourself a work-at-home job a little sooner.

What Does a Good Work-at-Home Resume Look Like?

Many people are surprised to find out that most companies hiring work-at-home agents are looking for a format a little different than the traditional chronological resume. While resumes for traditional on-site jobs often focus on education and prior employment, many recruiters in the online world are looking for a skills match first and foremost.

Highlight Your Experience Over Education

A hybrid skills-based resume puts your skills most applicable to the job you are applying for front and center. The first section of the resume, after your name and contact information, is your skills.

Another benefit of a skills-based resume is that gaps in employment are often less noticeable. This is a great option for those looking for a career change that may not necessarily have the workplace experience but do have the skills. You are still listing work experience on this hybrid resume, but it isn’t the main focus.

Most employers are looking for you to answer a couple basic questions with your resume:

  • Why this job?

Because of that, you will likely need to tailor your resume to each category of job – if not each job – to which you are applying. Pick three or four broad skills categories to put on your resume. Back those skills up with job experience, life experience, and/or specific accomplishments.

After the skills section, list your work history. You only need to go back 5 to 10 years, depending on how much work experience you have. If you have worked for several work-at-home companies or freelance gigs at one time, you may want to limit your work history to five years.

You can also modify this section a bit as well. Give a brief description of the type of work the company does, but then list specific accomplishments you achieved on the job as opposed to every task you did. For example: Rather than just stating you wrote articles for clients, highlight that you wrote over 60 articles that were published on Forbes . Rather than simply stating that you managed a client’s social media platforms, highlight the growth or results they experienced while you were at the helm. If they are looking for someone with high-level customer service skills, highlight your experience working with difficult customers.

Resume Tip: Consider nixing the fancy template. You can certainly get elaborate resume templates both free and paid, but you may sooner or later find them to be little more than a big frustration. Because you will be tailoring your resume over and over again, elements of that fancy formatting may be lost or disrupted over time – leaving you frustrated with a funky-looking mess. There is also some concern some resume formats may not be read properly by screening software which we will talk a little more about below.

Experience You Shouldn’t Leave Out

Many companies look for prior telecommuting experience when considering candidates. This can demonstrate your ability to work independently, and possibly show that you have an idea of the work arrangement and what’s required in this unique situation. Therefore, if you have any remote experience, flaunt it.

You can include freelance projects and temporary work assignments. If your current or previous employer let you work from home on occasion, point that out. FlexJobs has some great tips about where to highlight that experience.

Good Skills to Put on a Resume

As for what skills to include on your resume, the job description is a good place to start. Most companies will let you know the specific skill set they are looking for. You won’t want to copy their list word for word, but you will want to mirror some of their language and choose those skills that are relevant to what they are looking for.

For example: If you are applying for a sales position, you won’t want to focus on your automotive skills. Instead, you will want to highlight skills like marketing, client services, etc .

Key Skills for Any Work-at-Home Resume

There are a few skills you should include on a telecommuting resume regardless of the job you are applying for:

  • Technical know-how – This is perhaps the most important skill you will need when working remotely. You can’t call down to the IT desk if your computer locks up during your shift. You don’t need to be a tech whiz, but you do need to know the basics of turning it off and back on, Googling for solutions, etc .
  • Writing and communication skills – Communication can be a lot harder when it’s by email only. Stress your ability to communicate well. Back it up with an error-free, misspelling-free resume.
  • Decision-making skills – You can’t simply put a customer on hold and run over to your boss’ desk if you have a question. If you have an article due this afternoon and a question comes up, you can’t afford to wait for an editor to respond tomorrow. When working from home, you need to have the confidence to make decisions.
  • Reliable and dependent – Many people don’t make it in the work-at-home world because they need the structure and accountability of punching that clock or knowing the boss is looking over their shoulder. The number one thing companies are looking for in remote workers is the ability to work independently. Most large companies don’t want to micromanage. They want you to show up when you say you are going to show up and do the job you promised to do.

How to Write a Resume Summary

Most entry-level telecommuting resumes don’t include the Objective commonly seen in on-site roles. Many work-at-home jobs don’t come with the opportunity to move up in ranks that eventually lead to a corner office and management role. Therefore, you can feel a little more at ease not having to state your today-to-retirement employment plan.

In the Objective’s place, include a summary of why you are a good fit for the job. Focus on just a few strong points. Don’t make it about you and don’t include things like how you need this job because you need a lot of time off, and so forth. Those things don’t make you look like a serious candidate.

This summary may also come in handy if you don’t have the opportunity to include a cover letter when submitting your resume through online application software.

What Else Should I Put on a Resume?

Don’t forget your contact information . You may not need to include your mailing or physical address, but you should make sure your email address is on your resume in case your resume gets separated from the rest of your online application.

If the job you are applying to has an education requirement , even if it’s a GED or high school diploma, you should mention your education. If your degree could come in handy or make you stand out from the competition, include it. If the job doesn’t require any formal education, you can focus on those skills instead.

Important Resume Phrases

As if creating a resume wasn’t stressful enough, you may have heard whispers that your application is being reviewed by a machine as opposed to a real person. True story. The use of applicant tracking systems, or ATS, is a common practice in the work-at-home world. And it’s understandable. Some companies report receiving hundreds, if not thousands, of applications for every one opening. That’s a lot of manpower to view each of those by hand!

To narrow applicants down, many companies will run those resumes through an ATS that will pull out the best matches based on a ranking algorithm. Every system uses a different algorithm, but most look at skills, employment history, etc . Keywords are perhaps the most important thing an ATS looks for and the reason it is so important to tailor each resume to the job at hand. For example: If you are applying for a virtual assistant job for which the company has listed requirements as “Dropbox, MS Office, Google Docs, Evernote, Asana, Expensify, CRMs” and you simply put “familiar with popular online tools and software,” you may not get the ATS score needed to move onto the next round. If it says you need to be familiar with “Hootsuite, Blogger, WordPress, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Youtube” and you simply use the terms “blogging” and “social media” in your resume, you may get passed over.

Things You Can Leave Off

There are some things your work-at-home resume doesn’t need:

  • Objective – We discussed this earlier. Include a summary of qualifications instead.
  • References – Unless they specifically ask for them, don’t include them. Most entry-level work-at-home jobs will not ask for them.

I’m Afraid of Being Discriminated Against Because of My Age

I get this question frequently. From Monster , don’t include dates for your education. It also isn’t necessary to include all of your work experience and those dates. Your recent experience is likely all that will be taken into consideration anyway.

What About Employment Gaps?

This is another frequently asked question among my community. After all, many of you are stay-at-home moms who may have been out of the workforce for a while.

Think hard about roles you have done while out of the traditional workforce. You can certainly include freelance gigs, volunteer roles, and part-time jobs on your resume. Maybe you helped out at your church’s Vacation Bible School every summer. Maybe you have taken in a few kids to babysit or cleaned a few houses over the years. Maybe you helped your PTA organize their largest fundraiser to date. All of these things matter and can be listed.

  • Mention your location as well as your office’s location
  • Include “ remote ” with your location

  • Remote collaboration software : Mention how you have expert knowledge of Zoom, Dropbox, Google Suite, Microsoft Office 365 or any other cloud-based co-working tools.

Create a Work from Home Resume that Gets You Hired

The home-based job market can be super competitive. To get ahead of the pack, you need to create a work from home resume that stands out and gets you noticed.

If you’re actively looking for work from home jobs but haven’t had any interviews, your resume may be to blame.

Experts say that, in order to strengthen your candidacy, you should tailor your resume to each individual job you apply to. This is especially true in the work from home realm. Recruiters and hiring managers are looking for special skill sets that translate well to home-based success. 

Most Resumes Don’t Make it in Front of Human Eyes

Thanks to sophisticated hiring software, the resume you submit is searched by an applicant-tracking system first. This hiring search-bot is looking for certain keywords on your resume. Depending on the nature of the job, it could be any number of words or word combinations that indicate you may have the skills and experience needed for the job.

If your resume doesn’t contain these keywords, it’s discarded, never to be seen by that company again (unless you re-apply which will probably yield the same results!).

So, if you’ve been submitting your resume like crazy but have failed to get any callbacks, emails or Skype invites, you may be lacking the right keywords. This means your CV is getting tossed before someone gets a chance to see just how perfect you are for the position. Frustrating, right?

Fortunately, you can give your work from home resume the much-needed boost it needs to get past applicant-tracking software and in front of recruiters’ eyes.

So, Which Keywords Should I Use?

The first place to trackdown keywords to use is the job advertisement itself. The job description, responsibilities and required skills sections are filled with the relevant keywords you should be using in your resume.

Let’s take a look at a popular work-from-home job advertisement from U-Haul. This position is for their E-Customer Service Agent role.

From the Overview Section:

Help us by making a difference and enriching our customer’s experience during stressful moving times. With over 16,000 locations around the nation, we are looking for exciting, self-motivated and enthusiastic Customer Service Agents to assist our customers with rental equipment issues.

The words self-motivated and enthusiastic  are important here as they are used to describe the types of people U-Haul is actually looking for. Putting them in your work from home resume illustrates that you are that person.

Plus, these action words are easy to incorporate into any resume, regardless of your background.

Now let’s look at the Candidate Traits section:

  • You enjoy helping people during stressful times
  • You thrive in a fast paced virtual environment with a focus on quality and attention to detail
  • You are enthusiastic and empathetic and love creating an enjoyable experience
  • You live for a challenge, are goal oriented, be willing to learn different systems, and easily navigate between multiple screens
  • You can work independently delivering practical solutions and you thrive in a collaborative team environment

In this excerpted list, virtual environment, attention to detail, goal oriented, work independently, and team environment are all important keywords used to describe U-Haul’s ideal E-Customer Service Agent.

While you may not be able to incorporate all of them into your own work from home resume, you should try to include the ones which apply to you.For example, if you’ve never worked from home before, it would be tough to incorporate “virtual environment” on your resume.

Make sure to look at the Required Skills section, too. Here’s part of U-Haul’s:

  • Experience in Windows-based computer programs with excellent navigational skills is preferred
  • At least 6 months of customer service experience is preferred
  • Must be motivated with strong work ethic
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills

Windows, customer service, motivated, and communication skills are all important descriptive keywords. If you have these skills in your background, find a spot to put them in your work from home resume!

Identify Hard Skills & Soft Skills

In the recruiting world, these different skills and attributes are referred to as hard skills and soft skills. Hard skills are things that are taught and measurable like typing speed, degrees, and certifications.

Soft skills are traits someone has like interpersonal and communication skills.

The more hard skills and soft skills keywords you can incorporate from the job description into your work from home resume, the better. These are the traits/attributes/abilities that an applicant needs to be successful in the job!

Use Outside Help

If you find it difficult to locate the most relevant keywords from often lengthy job advertisements, you’re in luck! There’s a really great online tool called JobScan , and it couldn’t be simpler to use. Paste your resume on one side, the job ad on the other, and voila!

JobScan will analyze it for you. The result is an easy-to-read report that lets you know how well your resume matches with the requirements of the ad.

It’s free up to five scans per month. Any more than that and you’ll have to pay $89.95 for the year. You can sign up for a free month.

So, if you’re actively looking for a job, it’s probably worth signing up for the free month. In that time you can do unlimited scans and learn a lot from the results. By the time your free month is up, you should have a solid understanding of how to pull keywords from a job description and place them into your resume.

Where Else to Look for Work from Home Resume Keywords

Sometimes a job advertisement is super short. These micro-posts make it difficult to determine what keywords you should use. This means you will have to populate your resume with relevant keywords without the help of the job ad.

If the company has a website (which they likely will) check out their “About Us,” “Mission Statement,” “Values,” “Beliefs” or other similar areas that discuss the company’s culture and philosophy. Here you’ll find plenty of keywords that describe what the company is all about. Chances are, they will be looking for like-minded people that fit in with these core values and beliefs to join their team. When you put these terms in your resume, you automatically seem like a good fit for the company.

You can also head over to your LinkedIn profile for a little inspiration. You know how you can add new skills under the Skills & Endorsement section?  This is a great spot to turn to when you need help coming up with keywords relevant to the job title you’re applying for.

Say you’re applying for a home-based customer service job. You can type in “Customer” into the Skills & Endorsement section of your LinkedIn profile and get an idea of related keywords:

You can pull from this list to create plenty of industry specific word combinations that are relevant to the job you’re applying to.

Common Work from Home Resume Keywords

I spend a lot of time reading work from home job advertisements tracking down legitimate ones for the job board . I’ve been jotting down keywords that frequently show up in home-based job ads. Here are some of the ones that show up over and over again:

It’s really not surprising that these are some of the most frequent work from home keywords employers use. After all, when you work remotely, you won’t have someone constantly looming over your shoulder, urging you to get work done. It’s up to you, and you alone, to get your assignments done. It’s no wonder then that terms like, “reliable,” “self-starter,” “self-motivated,” and “dependable” make this list.

Sample Work from Home Resume

Remember, don’t overthink it! While you want to include relevant keywords, you don’t want to overstuff your resume either. Incorporate keywords naturally into your resume. Even though you have to get past applicant-tracking software, your resume will eventually find its ways in front of human eyes.

Always be truthful when detailing your skills, experience, and attributes. If you can strategically place a relevant keyword in place of an existing word choice – great! If not, don’t stress it.

Some ways to easily include keywords into your resume are to include skills, expertise, and profile sections. These are often bulleted lists that quickly layout your abilities. Filling these sections with work from home keywords is really easy and increases your chances of getting an interview.

But what if you don’t have any blogger, freelance writer, virtual assistant, etc. experience and the extent to your online experience is through social media activity like Facebook and Pinterest? What would you put in the experience section of resume? I’m trying to start working from home so I don’t have work from home experience.

Thanks for stopping by! Really, it depends on what kind of work from home job you’re looking for. If you’re looking for a sales and support position, you would want to higihlight your customer service experience. If you wanted to become a virtual administrative assistant, you would want to describe your in-office experience in clerical roles. A lot of in-office jobs translate really well to online work! Many times, you don’t necessarily need previous work from home experience. Instead, you need to demonstrate on your resume that you can get the job done while working remotely. This includes mentioning the needed qualifications for the position and showing that you work will as part of a virtual team — being familiar with online collaboration tools, being organized, and great written communication skills are definite musts 🙂 Good luck!

Can someone just make a resume for me instead? It’s too much work for me. I’m not creative using words. I never worked and been a sahm since 2004. I have 5 kids, a husband and in debt. I don’t volunteer in anything and don’t want too! I’m a very much a introvert. I also do not drive so I reallly need a good paying job from home. I homeschool two of my kids.

This is great information. I have many skills I’ve used remotely with my current and previous jobs, just not remotely from home, so to speak. I’ve done work for other operations or projects within the same company, but was not on site with the entire team. I feel these skills can carry over to a fully remote position. A great blog – particularly useful is the insight around keywords. As the saying goes its not what you say but how you say it, especially the action words you choose. Using powerful action words on your resume is one great way to make it stand out. Take for example the words, ‘wrote’ and ‘compose’ press releases. Both of them mean the same but using the word ‘compose’ suggests you put more thought into writing those press releases. Drop the generics or empty jargon such as ‘good communicator’ and ‘passionate, and instead demonstrate that you are. This will help to sift you out from the pile of applications. There are many reasons people struggle to get a work-at-home telecommuting job. One is that they don’t look for the right jobs in the right places . Another is that they don’t send a work at home job resume that stands out to employers.

How Can Your Resume Make or Break Your Telecommuting Job Search

Most people don’t take the time to tweak their work at home resume to fit what the employer wants. Instead they send the same generic resume to every job announcement. If you’ve ever been on a a hiring committee, you know that these types of resume are not only boring, but are more likely to have you end up in a “possible hire” pile instead of “we need to talk to this person” pile. I hired a freelancer immediately after earmarking several possibilities because he targeted his resume to my needs.

What’s In a Winning Work At Home Job Resume?

It’s important to understand that resumes are not boring documents that list your skills and experience. They are marketing tools that sell you as the solution to the employer’s problem. To do that, you need to match your skills and experience to directly meet the needs of the employer. Here’s how:

  • What is the employer asking for? While most job announcements list an over all job title, such as “virtual assistant” or “customer service,” in most cases, there are variations in what employers say they want or need in a worker. For example, they might want you have specific knowledge, experience, or equipment that other employers with the same job don’t ask for.
  • What industry is the employer in. The more you can show an employer that you know and understand what he wants and needs, the more you’ll stand out. By doing some research on the industry to understand what the company does and who it provides it to (what is the company’s market), you can tailor your resume to show your knowledge of the industry. For example, if you want to be a virtual assistant and you see a job announcement from a Realtor, learn a little bit about the real estate industry so you can talk about how your skills work in real estate.
  • Highlight your skills and experience that fit the job in your resume and cover letter, with only a reference to non-job related work. Depending on your work history, you may have a ton of work experience that has nothing to do with the job you’re applying too. Because you want to keep your resume to one page, you want to make sure you focus mostly on the skills and experience that the job needs, with only a mention of other experience.
  • Include a cover letter/email intro that focuses on your most qualified skills and experience. You have one chance to get an employer to look at your resume, so make sure you start off with a bang.
  • Use basic text for your resume and cover letter, especially if you’er pasting the information in an email or online. Formatting, such as bullets, bold, tabs, etc don’t email or format online line well. If you’re uploading or attaching a resume document (never attach a resume to email unless you’re asked to), you can use formatting.

Work At Home Cover Letter/Resume Checklist

Now that you have an idea of what you need to do, here’s how to do it.

  • Print out or write down the major skills and experience the job announcement asks for. If it wants a specific typing speed, write that down. If it wants a set number of years of experience, write it down. Note that you might not meet all requirements, but if you meet many of them, especially the important ones, you should be able to compete for the job.
  • Match your skills and experience to what the employer is asking for. If it wants someone who types 60 words a minute and you can do that, it’s a match.
  • If you have experience in the same industry, that is a match. If you don’t have experience in the industry, do a little research so you can at least write about it in your cover letter to show you understand what the company is about.
  • Note the name of the person you need to contact if it’s provided.

I have a dedicated home office equipped with high speed Internet and security (and any other equipment the job asks for).

Once you’re ready to submit your resume, make sure your submission reaches the other end intact by sending it correctly. Emailing and copying/pasting into online forms can be tricky from a word processing program. You risk all sorts of things going wonky. I wouldn’t say omit experience, especially if it suggests a gap, but I’d focus on relevant experience and just have a line about other experience. For example, if I’m applying to a place focused on health and wellness, I provide a lot of info about my background in that, but only a line for each place I was a social worker, which didn’t involve health and wellness. Want To Know If EMPOWER Network Is a legit work at home opportunity.

My knowledge of the Empower Network is limited, although I know it’s been around for a long time. I can’t say that it’s a scam, in that it’s illegal or trying to steal your money. However, there are a few complaints regarding the program. Further, I’m not a big fan of these “sign up make money” programs. Working at home is like any other work. 5 Résumé Tips to Get a Work-From-Home Job

Want to start working remotely make these changes to your résumé.

Are you growing tired of your commute and looking for a more flexible work arrangement? Do you have strong time-management skills and feel comfortable using email, phone and video-conferencing software to keep in touch with coworkers? If so, a work-from-home job might be a good next step in your career.

According to a survey by “Global Workplace Analytics and FlexJobs,” remote work has grown 91 percent over the past decade — and 159 percent over the last 12 years. In fact, remote work is “standard operating procedure” for half of the U.S. population, says one report from Forbes .

But before you start firing off job applications for virtual positions, reevaluate your current résumé . While writing a résumé and cover letter for a remote job is similar to writing one for a traditional, office-based role, there are small changes you can make that will help your chances for being noticed. Below are five ways you can tailor your résumé to land a work-from-home job.

1. Emphasize previous telecommuting experience.

If you've successfully worked from home — or traveled extensively for work — in previous positions, a prospective employer can assume you will be ready to work virtually in your next role . Choose one of the following ways to highlight this valuable work experience.

  • Leverage your job title. Include the word “Virtual” or “Remote” in parentheses at the end of your job title.
  • Use “location” as an opportunity. Instead of listing a city and state for your position's location, write “Remote Work” instead.
  • Highlight it in your job description. Leave out any location information for the role and note that the job was performed remotely in the first sentence of your job description.

Additionally, let the recruiter know how much of your time — in hours or as a percentage of your time — was spent working from home or on the road. You can include this information in the blurb that describes your job responsibilities or emphasize it in your career accomplishments, like the examples below.

  • Achieved 110 percent sales quota for the past three years while traveling 80 percent of the time
  • Won an award for book design while a member of a three-person, 100 percent virtual team

2. Highlight the skills employers look for.

Not everyone is cut out to work from home. When hiring remote workers, employers look for candidates who are qualified to perform the job duties and also possess certain traits that will set them up for success working from home. The best telecommuters are typically self-motivated, disciplined, mature, skilled with technology, effective time managers and comfortable with electronic communication. Where possible, emphasize these soft skills in your cover letter and résumé to show employers you have what it takes to telework successfully.

ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT

For example, consider adding a “Technical Skills” section toward the bottom of your résumé that lists your relevant proficiencies. Include any online collaboration tools, video-conferencing software, chat platforms and instant-messaging tools you've used previously or with which you are familiar. Also, you can use your cover letter to express your high comfort level in using these tools to stay in touch with colleagues.

3. Show you're set up for success — literally.

In your cover letter, mention your access to the tools you'll need to perform the job working from home, including a dedicated workspace, a reliable and fast internet connection, and a newer-model computer, as some employers will expect their telecommuters to supply their own equipment.

You can also subtly work this information into your résumé. For instance, if you've worked remotely in the past as a customer service representative, you might state, “Fielded 20+ inbound calls and 30+ email inquiries from customers on a daily basis from a dedicated home office with a high-speed internet connection."

4. Tailor your résumé for the position.

Once you find a position that interests you and matches your expertise, reevaluate your résumé based on the specific job requirements listed. Then, tweak your résumé so it clearly reflects your qualifications. Where possible, incorporate key terms found within the posting. This will increase your résumé's chances of passing through the company's hiring software and capturing the attention of the hiring manager or recruiter.

5. Look for remote work in the right places.

There are many sites, such as FlexJobs, We Work Remotely, Remote.co and SkipTheDrive, that specialize in posting full-time, part-time and contract jobs that allow you to work exclusively or partially from home. In addition, add one of the following terms to your search query on your favorite job board to identify work-from-home job opportunities: “remote,” “telecommute” or “virtual."

7 Tips to Help You Find a Work at Home Job in 2024

I f you aren't already working from home full-time and you want 2024 to be your year, it's smart to have a plan in place to make that happen for yourself. I can't create a plan for you -- everyone's plan will be different because what works for one person won't necessarily work for another.

BUT there are some things you can do to increase the likelihood that you will land something this year!

Before I give you some pointers, you need to understand that the most important thing is  not to give up .

Competition for work from home jobs is fierce, and you'll likely get many more rejection emails than anything.

The people who are the most driven and determined are the ones who usually succeed in the long run, so just keep trying!

1 - Stay Informed

Probably the most important tip I can give you is to stay informed, if you aren't already.

There are Facebook groups, Facebook pages, Twitter accounts you should follow, and more just depending on where you hang out the most online. I've linked some useful ones below.

If you're leery of the scams people post online, here are some tips to  help you avoid work from home scams.

Another way to stay informed is to follow this blog and the other blogs/sites on  this list .

2 - Use Social Media And Online Forums To Your Advantage

If you're on Facebook, you should follow  these pages . I also recommend joining the following groups for legit work at home info:

  • Virtual Workers Of America
  • Work From Home Break Room

And if you prefer Pinterest, you'll want to check out The Work at Home Woman's list of  work at home Pinterest boards to follow .

If you're not really a Facebook or social media person, check out these  work at home related Reddits .

This is how I found good leads when I was looking for things to do from home in the beginning.

These forums also helped me understand what worked and didn't work for other people who were applying for the jobs that I wanted. You don't have to post and be active. Reading is enough.

You can truly learn so much about the work from home world, and knowledge is power!

3 - Check For Work From Home Job Leads Daily

I post leads weekly on my  work from home job leads  board, but there are a  ton of other places to check too .

You should also learn how to use  smart search terms  to narrow things down when you're browsing leads on job search sites like Indeed. And don't rule out Craigslist! Yes, I know there are scams galore on Craigslist, but I find little gems there all the time.

In fact, some of the best leads I find come from Craigslist. And I wrote an entire post last year on  how to search Craigslist effectively for work from home  and avoid all those scams. Give that a read and put my tips to use, and you'll be a Craigslist job searching pro in no time.

I also have a huge list of 111  work at home companies . There are also tons of  non-phone jobs  if that's what you have in mind.

4 - Consider a FlexJobs Subscription

I've been a paying member to FlexJobs for a couple of years now, and I personally like it because they post a large number of flexible and telecommuting job leads 5 days per week, they guarantee their leads scam-free, and their options for sorting to find exactly what you need are excellent. It's very organized!

While not all of the leads FlexJobs posts are exclusive to their site, I still think it's a time-saver because it's organized so well overall.

5 - Tweak Your Resume

When you apply for a work from home job, your resume is usually going to be the one thing that makes or breaks you getting an interview or an instant rejection email. Make it great if you can!

I get a lot of questions from people who want to know how to write a resume or make theirs better and unfortunately, I'm no pro on resumes. If I'm being honest, my own resume could use a nice upgrade!

Fortunately, one of our writers (Anna Jones) who does know a thing or two about resumes, put together a helpful list of  work at home resume tips  you can check out.

And when all else fails, you can use a  resume template  if you're starting from scratch and just fill in the blanks. That for sure makes things easier.

It goes without saying, but check and double check your resume for spelling errors or grammar mistakes. Run it through a spell checker and get another set of eyes on it, too.

Another idea is to pay a professional to do your resume for you. The price is not cheap for resume services, but it will pay for itself if it lands you some interviews and, hopefully, a job.

6 - Learn Some New Things

When you're browsing job leads, you may find yourself dismissing various openings because you don't have certain skills.

Well, who says you can't learn those skills? You don't always have to go back to school to learn new things, although that's never a bad idea, either. Luckily the internet is full of various resources for learning.

With this in mind, I put together a post with a  list of free or very cheap online learning resources . Being able to add highly sought after skills to your resume will only help you, and all of those learning resources provide the tools you need to get those skills.

7 - Learn About Work at Home Scams

Work from home scams give telecommuting a bad name. I've run across so many people who refuse to apply for work from home again because they got scammed. These people no longer trust anything, and that's completely understandable!

Red flags to watch out for include payment requests, unsolicited emails, extremely vague information, little to no contact information, outrageous income claims, and so-called work from home companies with names that include the words "pay day," "profit," "wealth," "freedom," "fortune," and so forth.

Also, never agree to let a company send you a check for "office supplies" prior to you starting work, and then deposit it into your own back account, wiring part of the money back to them.

That's the oldest scam in the book, and of all the "is this is a scam" emails I get, this is most often what people are asking me about. It's everywhere.

Read through my  "is it a scam?" checklist  so you will know what to look for the next time you are not sure.
