After I install it, how do I use the extension?

After installation, you should automatically be redirected to your personal LinkedIn Profile. I tested 5 AI resume builders to help get a job — here's what happened

Here’s how to apply for a job using AI

I long for the day when I’ll wake up in the morning and get my AI ready to go to work for me . Until that time comes, the least AI could do for me today is to help me land a job I like.

Not everyone is a fan of resume and cover letters, but they remain staples in many recruitment processes.

For years, employers have also been using forms of AI to filter through these documents in order to narrow down the pool of applications they receive for any given vacancy. 

The latest advances in generative AI mean that right now employees can leverage AI tools at their disposal to empower themselves in the job-hunting process.

I wanted to see how powerful these tools are. To find out, I created a shortlist of AI resume and cover letter builders that I wanted to try. Tom’s Guide believes in fair fights, so I used each of them as though I was applying for the same job with the same profile.

A target was required and I found a LinkedIn ad for a real job as a remote Software Engineer with generative AI responsibilities at Meta (formerly Facebook) that looked promising.

The role asked for a candidate with over two years of coding experience and over two years of building large-scale applications. More experience was required in designing and completing medium to large features without guidance. Meta was looking for a candidate with, or in the process of obtaining, a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent practical experience. In exchange, the company was offering a salary between $116k and $168k per year.

I created a fictitious aspiring Meta software engineer, Tamsin Smith, in order to have some kind of profile I could submit to the AI. Smith holds two Stanford University degrees in computing science, completed an internship with Twitter and has been working at Google as a software engineer since 2019. 

If that’s not enough for Mark Zuckerberg to give her an offer, she also leads a local scouting group in her free time.

With an actual job ad and an alter ego in hand, I was ready to start reviewing AI tools. Read on to find out which tools I used, what they produced and my thoughts on their performance.

My first attempt was with Rezi.ai since it offers a free basic service and I wanted to check if the way I designed the review could work in principle. And it did!

Right after confirming my email, I was creating Tamsin Smith’s first resume.

I was presented with a choice between a “Job-Tailored Resume” and a “General Purpose Resume”; I went with the first choice as it was exactly what this test was about. It asked me for the role and company I’m targeting but I was blindsided when Rezi asked me to insert a job application I’d written for the role. Isn’t this something the AI should be doing for me?

I finished this side quest and then added basic details like my name and email, followed by my previous work experience. Here’s when I first encountered signs of AI life in the form of a bullet point generator to further explain my role. 

Rezi went on to ask me to add details on projects I’d worked on, my education history, certifications, coursework, involvement in other organizations, and my skills.

The next exciting step was the summary section, where I gladly let the AI take control. It was nothing I couldn’t have come up with myself if I simply wanted to summarize my resume, but it at least merits a pass mark. (I wanted to ask the AI to write a cover letter for me based on the finished resume but that feature requires a subscription.)

Overall Rezi marked the resume it produced at 87 out of 100, which I think is a bit too generous. If you have a rough idea of what you want your resume to look like, by all means, use Rezi so you don’t have to worry about the formatting. It might also provide a helpful AI-generated bullet point or two along the way.

If you were worried that not using Rezi’s AI was the one thing stopping you from getting your dream job, rest assured that (at least with its free version) this is not the case.

Resumaker.ai

“Designed templates that will get you hired at the world's leading companies,” Resumaker proudly displayed on its homepage. I also had to pay ($0.99) to download my resume and cover letter. Surely, I was on the verge of getting Tamsin hired?

By now I’d gotten the hang of inserting details like my education and work history. In this regard, little separates the resume builders tested here.

The AI kicked in to provide me with text I could insert as accomplishments in my jobs and as the headline summary. The latter left much to be desired but at least it was presentable. Resumaker didn’t offer to beef up my volunteering section so I had to write that part manually. As a whole, the resume felt a bit dry but at least it was presentable.

However, it’s a good thing this service isn’t called Coverlettermaker. Every sentence it generated started with either an “I am” or “I have”. When you’re working with such a structure, there’s only so much you can do to make the rest more exciting. Furthermore, it left the [Company Name] field for me to fill in. AI that’s supposed to help me land a job in a highly competitive market should come with higher standards. 

Resumaker.ai claims that thousands of applications it created landed people jobs. If there’s any truth to that, then on the bright side we really shouldn’t be overthinking what we’re sending to hiring managers.

The main question I asked myself before deciding whether each AI builder deserved a pass mark was: Can I send out the résumé as is? 

Teal didn’t quite make the cut here.

It asked me to connect the specific job I was applying for from LinkedIn to the resume and it started analyzing the job ad for keywords I should include. Fantastic! I was ready for a made-to-measure summary, past accomplishments, and cover letter — the areas where I wanted the AI to work its magic.

Unfortunately, this is where I felt let down. In the headline summary, Teal ended up giving me a compilation of the achievements it had previously generated but also prominently added that I had expertise in “work authorization”. The AI thought the right to work in the U.S. requirement from Meta’s job description was a hard skill. 

It scored its own resume at 79%.

As far as its cover letter goes, I appreciated that I could generate it for free without having to spend time adding more details than I already had. However, the result was something I could have just as easily written myself.

My score: 2/5

Kickresume.com

The last AI resume maker I wanted to test was Kickresume, which had the highest monthly fee out of the lot at $19 per month. You can bring that down by paying an annual lump sum that brings the pricing down to $9 a month or, as I did, utilize the free trial version. 

Right when I was losing hope in the resume generators, Kickresume lifted my spirits.

Its helpful AI writer was alongside me from start to finish, offering handy suggestions for work accomplishments, explaining my certifications, and also suggesting skills I should list specifically for a software engineering position. I ended up with a clean-looking CV and I didn’t even have to break a sweat.

Kickresume gave the resume it generated a score of 88/100.

If I’m in a pinch and need a new resume that I don’t have to scan for AI-generated sentences that would land me in the "rejected" pile, Kickresume.com is the first website I’ll be visiting.

I wanted to add a nice cherry to the cake, so I asked Kickresume to create a cover letter using the great resume it made. But this is where I was underwhelmed. 

While devoid of grammatical errors, I felt as though the AI didn’t take the résumé and job description I gave into consideration. It provided me with a few short lines that didn’t even name-drop Tamsin’s fictitious stints at Twitter and Google. You wouldn’t even know she completed two degrees at Stanford. Based on my positive experience with the résumé, I couldn’t believe this was the same AI content generator.

My score: 4/5

No subscriptions. No plugins. I wanted to see how well the free version of OpenAI ’s ChatGPT would do against the four dedicated AI resume and cover letter generators listed above.

I tweaked a prompt that I found online and, in 161 words, I asked the AI for a first draft of my new resume. I then asked the chatbot to refine its work based on the job description I gave it to make my resume less generic. In seconds, I had my second draft.

Since ChatGPT only gave me a plain text version of my resume, I then pasted what it gave me into a template from one of the previous builders.

I’m happy to announce that both myself and Tamsin were very pleased with the results. The resume easily rivals the ones generated from the other services I tested. I wouldn’t have minded some text to beef up the education section to explain what I had learned at Stanford. Also, the line pointing out that Meta was previously called Facebook is something I would never have included in a resume intended for Meta’s eyes. Other than that, ChatGPT gave me decent results in the shortest amount of time.

I was especially impressed with the cover letter I asked ChatGPT to craft for me. It was perhaps a bit too long for some tastes but it was arguably the most well-rounded out of the five.

The verdict

There have already been reports of people using AI to write resumes and cover letters who ended up getting hired for the positions they’ve applied for, and I’m not surprised. But as this test has shown, a website’s claim that it uses AI to provide a service is not some kind of guarantee of the level of service you can expect. 

Shop around when looking for AI resume and cover letter writers. Perhaps combine two or more of them to leverage each one’s specific strengths. But add the finishing touches yourself.

How To Use AI To Build The Perfect Resume To Win The Job

The intent of crafting a resume is to secure job placement.

It is important to be mindful of how you are presenting your work history and achievements. Thankfully, the advancements of technology are making it easier on job seekers to present winning resumes to recruiters.

If used properly, artificial intelligence can be your friend in this, and it can guide your resume in the right direction.

Maceo Owens, senior program manager of Employee Research Groups at Opentable and KAYAK, weighs in on three ways ChatGPT can bolster your resume.

Create A Formula That ChatGPT Can Enhance

As AFROTECH previously told you, ChatGPT is an AI chatbot designed to benefit all of humanity. One of its premier functionalities is allowing users to insert a prompt. In return, it will dish out a response.

While creating a resume, you should be mindful in starting your intro phrase with an action word and providing background to your inquiry. Owens finds it most useful to insert a formula that will help paint a story on your resume.

“There’s a formula I already came up with, which is saying what you did, what metric it moved, and what strategies you used,” Owens told AFROTECH. “So I’ll say ‘I increased engagement by X percent by incorporating these strategies X, Y, and Z.’ That tells a story when you structure it that way. I was also able to still have my flavor and style and just let ChatGPT know this is the way that I structure it, but make it better.”

Following Owens suggestion, I inserted the formula into ChatGPT with a prompt that read “Tailor resume for math teacher with prompt ‘I increased engagement by X percent by incorporating these strategies X, Y, and Z.'”

Do note, you should still alter your resume to reflect your personality. Simply copying and pasting the example below should be avoided.

Logistics Are Key

Furthermore, be sure to highlight your impact from previous job roles. This will be most effective by integrating data in your resume as it will showcase to recruiters your performance and the value you could bring to their team.

Simone Porter, senior non-technical recruiter for Amazon Entertainment, said during AFROTECH World 2022, “We want to know your accomplishments. Go back into your brain bank, and think about the accomplishments that you have done on your teams, and it needs to be result-oriented. There needs to be data behind it, whether it’s qualitative or quantitative — increasing revenue, decreasing costs, if you’re working on projects, the size of the projects — that data needs to be in there because it shows achievements, it shows you deliver results.”

With ChatGPT, no questions are off-limits. You should inquire about what data points will be useful to fold into your resume.

Owens explained, “When it comes to numbers, I’m already just a big fan of metrics in general, but when you copy and paste like the job description, utilize AI and ask it ‘what are some numbers that I can incorporate into my resume that this role is probably gonna really be impressed by or that’s gonna help to meet the need?’ Obviously ask that question in your own words, but the great thing about ChatGBT is that it gets it.”

I inserted the prompt, “What data points should I put on my resume as a math teacher” into the language model-based chatbot.

Results included “Highlight improvements in student performance, such as average test score increases, percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards, or specific achievements in math competitions or projects” and “Mention the average class size you’ve managed, which can demonstrate your ability to handle diverse groups of students,” among others.

AI Can Criticize Your Resume

Additionally, you should always seek feedback, especially when a job opportunity is at stake, Owens says. She suggests allowing ChatGPT to criticize your resume.

“I’ll also say asking it (AI) to criticize your resume, even when you feel good about it,” Owens told AFROTECH. “I have it act as a recruiter and tell me, ‘what can I do on my resume to make it better?’ That exact prompt is extremely helpful. You have to be open to feedback with that one.”

ChatGPT responded to my prompt with suggestions on improving a resume mentioning “stick to a clean and professional font style and size (e.g., Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman at 10-12 points)”; “list your work experience in reverse chronological order (most recent job first); and “aim for a resume length of one to two pages, depending on your experience.”

Ultimately, your resume should serve as a written 30-second elevator pitch, Amazon’s Porter notes. So, you want to put your best foot forward, and AI should be on your radar to successful promote yourself to employers.

A woman shares how a “dystopian” resume hack helped her beat AI and land three part-time jobs. TikTok user Cami Petyn (@camipetyn) is a musician who was also looking for part-time work. But she wasn’t having much luck. That is, until a friend shared a resume hack that turned her job search around.

“Did I girlboss too close to the sun and now not only have one, not two, but three part time jobs?” Cami says in the video, which has amassed 1.2 million views as of Friday morning. The video’s text overlay reads, “if you’re struggling getting a job watch this!” 

As she eats lunch in her car, Cami says, “Let me how I got these jobs, because I was terrified a couple of weeks ago for a while. I applied probably to 65 jobs and wasn’t hearing anything back. I was like holy [expletive], will I have to move? Will I have to start selling my stuff, my car, everything? Luckily, my friend Daym actually told me a hack. It’s incredibly dystopian. Let me tell you about it. Because after I started doing this, I started getting interviews left and right and look at me now.”

As Daym notes, artificial intelligence is being used by companies to screen applicants. “The problem there is that AI will say you’re not a good fit if it can’t read the resume,” she says. “If the formatting isn’t ‘AI-friendly.’ I’m sorry I’m human—I don’t know how to make a resume AI-friendly.” Well, she does now!

“But with this hack,” she says, “it’s full-proof to be AI-friendly.” In a text overlay, she clarifies, “or at least closer to fool proof.” 

How to land a part-time job and defeat the AI filters

So how does the hack work? According to Cami, the first step is to go to the job description. “You’re going to copy it and then paste it onto your resume. Then, you are going to make that text super tiny and in white ink, so it’s not visible to the human eye, but to AI, I guess, it still sees it there. And it reads every key word that is there. So your resume looks like it’s a great fit.”

Cami acknowledges that this tactic means you have to update your resume for each job application. “Which heavily sucks, but you know what sucks more? Panicking about not having a job,” she says.

After she started employing the hack, Cami says she started getting job interviews. “On top of that, instead of just doing the quick reply on Indeed or LinkedIn, whatever, I will do the quick apply. But then, after that, I will go on Google, and find the email of the company … and I will email my resume and just be like, hi I’m applying to the job. Introduce yourself briefly and attach [your] resume.”

In the comments, users weighed in on the strategy and offered their own tips for job hunting in the AI age.

One user wrote, “I have so much beef with the online applications, they’re like plz submit ur resume and then manually type out all of your work expirience.”

A second user wrote, “I also heard getting rid of all the *fancy* formatting we were taught to add helps too! Made mine basic text and bullets and immediately was getting calls after months of nothing.”

A third user wrote, “It’s absolutely true bc sometimes I’ll mass apply to jobs and check 10 mins later and it says it’s already been viewed and denied like…okay you’re not slick.”

Another user said, “I started getting job interviews after I used ai to make my resumes based off the job description. I would basically feed it info abt my last job, have it type up something with skills abt the job.”

Daym and Cami might be onto something. According to BBC , businesses are “increasingly” using AI recruiting software as a way to theoretically reduce bias in the hiring process. “Yet in some cases, the opposite is happening. Some experts say these tools are inaccurately screening some of the most qualified job applicants – and concerns are growing the software may be excising the best candidates,” the article states.

We all know the importance of the resume in terms of ‘selling’ ourselves to prospective employers. A good resume lets a recruiter see that we have the skills and experience they’re searching for, to hopefully carry us through the first filter and into the all-important interview stage.

That said, few if any of us can expect to cover all the requirements of a job description, whether in hospitality or any other field. And the gap tends to grow bigger the higher up the leadership ladder we are aiming.

I sometimes encounter people who simply don’t apply in these situations, because they feel that they fall too far short of what is wanted. But, with the sheer weight of required skills and experience we often see with job advertisements today, the truth is that few if any of us could hope to tick all the boxes.

By the same token, if we could fulfil everything in the job description then the likelihood is that we’d be bored within three months, because the role’s not challenging enough and there’s no room to grow!

So, when thinking of hospitality skills for your resume, rather than taking the job description as a checklist to fill out, we should consider it as an opportunity to grow ourselves. In this way, when we apply we can be clear on what we don’t have and explain how we relish the challenge of developing these hospitality skills as part of our professional growth.

The importance of hospitality skills in the industry

Let’s talk about some of the key skills for any successful hospitality resume. These can be broadly split into ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ skills – the former very role-dependent, and the latter more common to anyone looking to succeed in the industry.

I’ll focus on the soft skills, as these are where you can really differentiate yourself from other applicants; plus they are also more crucial for managerial positions.

The first of these I’ll talk about is teamworking. This is incredibly important in a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment like a hotel, where all areas (front office, concierge, housekeeping, F&B, etc.) must work in complete harmony to deliver a seamless guest experience.

Another vital soft skill is empathy – and this is especially relevant in a ‘people’ business like hospitality. You have to be outgoing and approachable in this business. And you must possess empathy for your clients or guests, seeing their satisfaction as your number one priority.

I began my professional life as a flight attendant for the German airline Lufthansa, and we always followed the maxim that ‘the client is king’. The ability to ask a guest “what can I do for you?” and to mean it is very powerful. That desire to learn what the guest wants, and to create a memorable experience for them, is so important for career advancement in hospitality.

Job descriptions in the hospitality industry

The hospitality industry is vast and multi-faceted. Roles and job descriptions will vary enormously between the industry’s different constituents, such as hotels, restaurants, cruise lines, event spaces and so on. With so much variety, I could write an entire article on job descriptions by themselves. However, to keep things brief I will use the example of the hotel, and highlight a few of the key job descriptions:

Front office roles Front office roles provide the public face of the hotel. These can range from receptionist to a front office manager. Because they involve face-to-face customer service, these roles serve as an excellent starting point for individuals who enjoy interacting with people and problem-solving on the spot.

Event planning Many big hotels offer space for events, ranging from business conferences to special events such as weddings. These events need planning and delivering, and that generally involves a large team working behind the scenes, all coordinated by event planners.

Rooms division As its name suggests, the rooms division looks after the hotel rooms, ensuring they are in a fit and proper condition to provide a perfect stay. Rooms division managers are responsible for maintaining cleanliness through the housekeeping team, while also ensuring the fixtures and fittings are all well maintained.

Revenue manager Revenue management professionals are responsible for maximizing the hotel’s bottom line, deploying a mixture of analytical and creative skills to spot revenue opportunities and then deliver additional business at the right price to generate returns.

Food & beverage (F&B) Most hotels offer in-house catering, with some luxury properties offering multiple restaurants including some with a Michelin star. Whatever the level of the F&B offer, all those working in that division will be actively involved in enticing the customers through the door and meeting their gastronomic and service expectations once they’ve taken their table.

The importance of a well-crafted resume in showcasing your skills

Before I go on to give some advice on crafting your resume, let’s just recap on why this is so important. First and foremost, while the hospitality industry continues to grow, it’s highly competitive for the plum roles.

In your resume you are showcasing your skills with the intention of matching these to the job position. You are also showcasing your experience and accomplishments, in the hope that these will catch the eye of the recruiter and chime with them in some way. In this regard, it’s especially useful that your accomplishments relate to the required skills – a tip here is to mimic to the phrasing from the actual job description to ensure this point hits home.

What I’m also seeing is a higher level of honesty, of putting yourself out there a little and showing a little vulnerability alongside showcasing your strengths. But be careful in this regard, as it can leave you open to being taken advantage of.

Another important aspect for an employer is that your personal values align with theirs. So do your research and discover more about the organization and its philosophy. You cannot fake alignment with it, though, and nor should you, since this is the recipe for a short and unhappy stay.

Crafting your perfect hospitality resume

The resume has a simple role: to make you stand out from the crowd and earn an interview. It’s about making you appear interesting enough, valuable enough, to be called in for an interview. Then it becomes dependent on that personal interaction, where getting the job or not comes down to the human-to-human chemistry on the day. After all, people buy people.

Another point to note is that there is no perfect recipe for a resume; nor should you ever rely on a single version to cover all eventualities. Take the time to tailor your resume to every role, and every company, you’re aiming for.

For me, a resume should not be more than two pages in length, even if you have significant professional experience. The first page should always begin with your personal statement, summing up who you are, why this role is interesting to you, and what you can bring to the company.

Then I suggest taking three specific work experiences (or if you are a young professional, turn back to academic experiences) and write a short paragraph about each, spotlighting what you learned through the experience and how this matches up to the role on offer as well as your own ambitions for professional growth.

That’s it for the first page. For the second page you can get more into list mode, with details of your professional and academic experience – naturally, the older you get the shorter the paragraphs become, as there’s more to fit in!

As mentioned, tailoring a resume to each position is essential in my view. It should also be smartly presented and eye-catching. Thankfully, there are design packages such as Canva which can help you in this regard. I would also recommend creating a spreadsheet or document where you can store bespoke paragraphs suited to different roles and employers.

Another important point is to ensure that your resume and LinkedIn profile are closely aligned. In fact, I advise my clients to include a link to their LinkedIn profile in their resume. It allows the recruiter to see more detail about your experience and also the company you keep, via your connections. Maybe there will be some mutual connections? This often helps to break the ice.

Should I use generative AI to help create my hospitality resume?

The final question to consider – especially with the cover letter – surrounds “generative AI or no generative AI?”. This is a new technology but already we cannot escape its impact. I have experimented with ChatGPT myself, because I think it is fascinating. I tend to write something first, then feed it into ChatGPT and ask for it to be made clearer or more friendly in tone. It’s quite remarkable what comes back, but I can still be confident that the underlying sentiments are mine.

At the other end of the scale, it’s perfectly possible to ask a generative AI to “write an application for front office manager” and it will draft the application with no further information needed. That’s obviously quite tempting, but it’s also dangerous, because it cannot be aligned to the specifics of the particular role. Indeed, most recruiters will be able to spot an AI-generated text unless you add the human touch to it.

Recap: identifying key hospitality skills

Let’s conclude by summarizing some of what I regard as the key skills to succeed in hospitality:

Interpersonal skills As a customer-facing business, the hospitality sector simply demands these skills, since they are the key to building trustful relationships with guests as well as fellow team members. If you’re an approachable type with effective communication skills, you’ll have a huge head start in forging a successful hospitality career.

Customer service skills As I mentioned earlier in the article, customer satisfaction is your raison d’étre in hospitality. Clear communication is crucial, as without it you cannot know what a customer wants. Also, throughout the hospitality business, but especially in the luxury segment, strong attention to detail is absolutely paramount. Customers will invariably put your problem-solving skills to the test too!

Communication skills Hospitality is the most global of industries, so proficiency in languages can be an asset. But above all you need to be good at active listening during your guest interactions, as well as those with fellow team members. You only get one chance to respond to a guest request correctly, and failure to do so could lead to the disaster of a bad review on a site such as TripAdvisor.

Team player mentality I mentioned this earlier, but it bears repetition: a team player mentality is absolutely critical in the hospitality industry. Teamwork is about great communication and an ability to put the needs of the team above your own. Be ready for collaboration both within your team and with other areas of the business. The more harmonious the environment, the better the organization will perform.
